Stewards/Confirm/2023

Translate this page at Template:Steward confirmations.

Warning

The 2023 steward elections are finished. No further votes will be accepted.

The 2023-24 Confirmation will begin on 05 February, and will finish on 26 February.

The 2023-24 Steward Confirmations are an opportunity for the Wikimedia community to comment on the performance of existing stewards. To make the process as smooth as possible, the confirmations are organized as follows.

To comment, please log in with an account that has edits (on any wiki) before 05 February. During the 2023 Elections, please mention if you are comfortable or unhappy with the use of steward tools of any of the people listed below and why.

After the election, stewards (including the newly-elected ones) are invited to review the confirmation comments and to give their impression of the outcome (consensus to confirm/remove etc.) on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2023 for every steward who stood for confirmation. Of course, they are not required to do this for every candidate and will be especially careful to do it regarding someone about whom they expressed strong opinions in the confirmation. Non-steward comments are welcome outside of the "Final Decision" section, subject to the usual expectations of civility. Confirmation discussions will last one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards. This may be extended to two weeks for one or more confirmations at the discretion of the Election Committee if the committee believes further input is required before concluding. The Election Committee will close these discussions and implement the outcome (which also means making a decision in non-obvious cases).

All stewards elected before February 2023 will undergo this process.

  • Personal info: Yeah, you might have guessed by almost LATE statement: I'm not renewing.
I said I will not seek renewal if I fail to achieve same level of activity within 2022, and I see I failed to do that. (Also that my interest in Wikimedia has significantly dropped that I don't really want to bear much active responsibility for now...) I can't say for sure but I believe this is sort of hiatus and I'll be back when situation allows. Cya for now. — regards, Revi 09:13, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: While I don't have a huge number of steward years under my belt to post in this statement, I am going on my 13th year as a Wikimedian, from various roles. This past year, my focus has been SRCU/SRGP/SRP, and when I feel like clearing a backlog or two, SRG. I've also been around active on off-wiki platforms for the emergency use/nature of steward tools. This coming year, I hope to have a pilot project be accepted by my fellow stewards that will help us as a group. Following that, I'm still improving UTRS bit by bit for the global processes, and hope to eventually incorporate other local communities in to the platform. I remain very active in the steward-WMF relationship and the internal maintenance of steward processes. Best of luck to everyone in 2023. -- Amanda (she/her) 01:29, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello! I was elected as a steward last year, so this is my first reconfirmation.

Over the year I have been active across a wide range of steward areas. I spent most of my time trying to keep SRG to a manageable level and responding to stewards@ tickets, but I also handled requests for permissions and closed a global RfC or two. I am also active in responding to requests on IRC and have handled many OS requests.

I intend to remain active in 2023 and would like to continue as a steward for another year with the support of the community. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 00:09, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello. This is my fourth confirmation.

Usually I prefer not to mention real life troubles when it comes to confirmations. We all travel, we all have probably had COVID by now, we all are busy with work or school at times etc. This year though I do have to mention those. A war is sadly no new experience for the large Wikimedia community, but it is new to me. It has affected my Wikimedia activity significantly. I live in Kyiv, and in the first couple of months I could edit little, Kyiv was still under direct threat and the large majority of my time was spent in a bomb shelter or trying to catch up with the news when outside. When the situation has improved so did my activity in the Wikimedia world, but it has shifted focus: Ukrainian Wikipedia community was lacking admins because of the reduced capacity overall, and I became one of the temporary admins there for a few months, and later a permanent sysop. When it was starting to feel that it isn't so bad and I even started to upload some files from my trip that I had around the time of the last confirmations happening, a new trouble has began — Kyiv is now under one of the tightest rolling blackouts schedule and its infrastructure is almost always a priority target. This limits one's capacity physically and mentally because it is just depressing being in the dark and in the cold.

With all that said I did have some activity as a steward this year. Mostly my activity was reactive. I would ban some LTAs after being poked on Discord, I would lock some accounts when I either hear myself or be poked about the news that someone has either died or was arrested. At the beginning of the war I have also helped to oversight some potentially dangerous edit histories in a couple of places when it comes to potential prosecution in either Russia or Belarus (an action that is grey zone policy wise, but was reviewed by OC and WMF and was deemed to be fine). When it comes to proactive activity, I still do check SRP and SRGP occasionally, but not as much as I used to. I think I also responded to a few VRT tickets and attended a few calls with T&S, and participated in a few internal steward discussions.

Being where I am I cannot promise that my activity would raise significantly over the next year if I am to be confirmed (I was always on the low side of it and currently it depends on a number of circumstances I just cannot have any influence on). But I do plan to be at least somewhat active, and hopefully my experience is still of value nevertheless. I am generally available to reach me via various means, but it is not always that I can react quickly. Whether I am confirmed or not I would of course continue being active elsewhere, including helping in the areas that overlap with what stewards do. As a wikiholic I cannot not to really :)

  • Personal info: Hi, a Diff blog post about my past 15 years as a steward has recently been published. This summarizes pretty much what I've been doing and still do for the stewards: Nowadays mainly organizational stuff in the background, like representing the Wikimedia Stewards User Group at the Wikimedia Summit, writing its report, sharing knowledge in calls and the internal wiki, and such. But recently, I could also rejoin IRC (besides being available on other messengers) after some technical issues which also increased my global anti-vandalism activities once again, although much of this is not logged publicly anyways. I'm looking forward to the next term, thank you for your feedback.

I was elected in 2022, so this will be my first confirmation as a steward.

I have done a fair amount of work on a steady pace over the course of the last year. This work covered different spheres of competence, and my main activity was related to global (b)locks and OS requests. I was quite active attending other requests on IRC, and I also helped as a scrutineer for the enwiki ArbCom elections. If you are interested, you can see my on-wiki statistics at ../statistics and ../CheckUser statistics for loginwiki.

This tenure has been a learning experience for me that will continue over the time. I believe I did a good job, and would like to volunteer for another term—as long as, of course, the community still trusts me with the tools. Thank you all, Sgd. —Hasley 21:50, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: After fighting vandalism for roughly a decade, I've decided I want to take a break. I will not be seeking reconfirmation as a steward this year.

When I first applied to be a steward in February 2020, I was heavily involved in counter-vandalism and in particular fighting long-term and high-profile abuse. Stewardship seemed like a fitting role for me. Just weeks later came the global pandemic, and myself and the rest of the world changed forever. I never thought I would stop fighting vandalism, but for reasons I can't explain, it simply doesn't fulfill me like it used to. I re-ran for stewardship last year, thinking I'd eventually get more involved. That day never really came, and I've finally accepted that it's time to move on to the next chapter of my wiki career.

No, I am not leaving the movement, and my dedication to Wikimedia and its amazing communities is as strong as ever. I'd just rather focus my time on engineering (volunteering and at WMF), and hopefully go back to writing some content. I realize there's a lot more to stewardship than just counter-vandalism, but after two years I still haven't found my niche. I will certainly miss having my buttons, but I don't use them enough to warrant wearing a steward hat. I would however appreciate my global interface editor rights be retained, as I held prior to stewardship.

It's been a pleasure serving you for the past two years as a steward. I may be back to apply some day, maybe even next year. For now, I look forward to serving the movement in other ways. Thanks to you all, and see you on the wikis! MusikAnimal talk 21:18, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While my professional career is flourishing and advancing, this means I'm finding myself with less time to offer to Wiki(m/p)edians. I initially planned to retire this year, but I met with strong and frequent requests by Wikimedians to remain in place and see how this year goes. After much soul-searching and reflection, I've decided to stand for confirmation so long as my peers approve.

This year, I've busied myself with:

    • Working SRG
    • Hunting spambots and Paid Editors
    • Responding to pings and requests on IRC
    • Contributing tiny bits of code to StewardBot
    • Offering a free IRC client to those who need it
    • Working on CabalBot/Bot873 functions/jobs on IRC

In the coming year, my goals would be:

    • Complete my long stalled work on StewardBot
    • Become more active in development areas
    • Explore technical sides that might align with my profession

However, I have been around for dealing with emergencies or daily requests, and I am interested in continuing serving as a steward for one more year, if I can count on your support. As a steward, I also do some behind the scenes stuff, such as the management of mailing lists and the private CU wiki. Unfortunately many of my colleagues are not seeking for confirmation this year :( So I think I can still be useful to the corpus of stewards, and I hope I could get the opportunity to share my views and experience with the incoming stewards. This is my 2nd confirmation, and after a first year full of steward activities, my second term was more modest. My stats shows near to 500 actions since March 2022 (blocks, locks, etc) and ~200 checks on loginwiki. I also tried to help users who contacted me by email or onwiki about gblocks or locks. And now, like the previous year, I'm running the AAR process.

However, this "low" active level as steward is not an indication that I'm not around, as 2022 was full of wiki-activities for me with edit-a-thons, courses, workshops and events about the Wikimedia Moviment and projects.

I love the job I do as steward and will be very happy to continue. This year I'll try to re-engage in my anti-spam efforts, return to my previous participation in SRP, and help wherever more my work could help.

I'm open for questions and thanks for your consideration.

With your support I would like to continue for another year. -- Tegel (Talk) 10:17, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hi, everyone. My name is Lucas Teles, I live in Brazil, and, since 2012, I have been a Steward (with an exception for 2020 when I resigned for a year). Here is my last year confirmation. Past year, I was mostly active on dealing with cross-wiki vandalism, smashing locking spambots and sockpuppeteers, globally blocking IP's. For those that like numbers, I was one of the most active on that regard, even though we know that we have highly valuable Stewards with less logged actions, but with same or more hard work. Last semester, I started doing renames again (it's so easy nowadays and I kind of started to like it). I plan to keep same activity level and act on same areas this year if community decides for approval. Thanks for participating.—Teles «Talk ˱C L @ S˲» 01:45, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

TheresNoTime has resigned, and as such, their confirmation process was stopped by the Election Committee. For the ElectCom, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 00:36, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep Keep While I am concerned about the checkuser issues that occured on enwiki last year, that lead to them resigning their checkuser and oversight rights, that they have not posted in this nomination statement, I still trust them to use the steward tools responsibly. --Ferien (talk) 21:07, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove I find it pretty strange that you still have access to non-public information, after you were found out by enwiki Arbcom to have abused the checkuser tool and had both CU/OS rights removed, not to mention the diva exit during the case. This is not what I expect from a steward, especially one who works for the WMF. Since then, you have zero functionary roles outside of login, which they have due to their Steward privileges. What doesn't make this any better is you don't even speak about the incident in your statement. You didn't really think no one would bring up a major incident that just happened a few months ago, did you? To be frank, I assumed you'd have enough dignity left to address the elephant in the room like Rxy did, but instead you chose to hide it. Not a good look. 1989 (talk) 21:08, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Remove Remove for controversial reply with harsh follow up despite my sincerity to withdraw the case to somewhat forgive and forget.--Jusjih (talk) 21:11, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak keep. The elephant in the room here is obviously their CheckUser and Oversight removal, otherwise this would be a no-brainer keep. I'm still willing to support based on two things: that the problem on enwiki was with their use of CheckUser, and not at all about their ability to keep data private (unlike a previous cases that popped up at SE), and that their misuse was not incompetence nor abuse but rather acting once while INVOLVED. In almost any other scenario involving CUOS removal, I would likely be opposing confirmation, but given the homewiki rule and extra impartiality (beyond that of functionaries) required of stewards, I can't really see a similar incident reoccurring, nor do I expect to from someone like TNT. • Keep Keep - I am convinced that TNT is still fit for another term. The English Wikipedia removal, as highlighted by Giraffer above, is an involved issue and is not a breach of privacy. Thank you for your help.--*Fehufangą✉ Talk page22:10, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • But it was, TNT did view two users' IP addresses for a completely unjustifiable check of "compromise/collusion", a novel use of the CU tool. That this was their first instinct rather than supposing that someone else thought unblocking Athaenara was the right course of action related to the (completely inappropriate, by the way) controversial comments was disturbing. --Rschen7754 22:37, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Of course "serious breaches of Wikipedia's administrative norms and of the CheckUser policy"[1] includes a "breach of privacy". ToBeFree (talk) 23:14, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove with regret. To me it's not so much the misuse of CU but the complete lack of judgment surrounding the incident. I don't trust your ability to step away from the tools when you are upset, and being a steward can be quite stressful. Happy to have you retain admin-level permissions and I hope this doesn't discourage you from contributing elsewhere. --Rschen7754 22:21, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove: "TheresNoTime: CheckUser removed. TheresNoTime: Oversight removed. TheresNoTime: admonished". ToBeFree (talk) 23:11, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove: Sorry for jumping the gun and posting prematurely yesterday; in 16+ years of Wikipedia/Wikimedia work, this is the first time I've argued a steward should not be retained and I misunderstood the process. On en.wiki, INVOLVED applies to all admin actions, and to argue an INVOLVED local functionary action, breaching the privacy of two administrators, does not violate the meta privacy rules is discordant. There is plenty more bad behavior, some of which is articulated above, and others of which is publicly available on the en.wiki Arbcom case. Bottom line? TNT did something egregiously out of bounds, and then requested a public case for presumed exoneration, only to instead display such prolonged bad judgment and logically incompatible arguments that a deferential ArbCom--who should have removed the advanced tools pending a case--was forced to act in as limited a manner as this. The fact that TNT still has steward access in light of en.wiki Arbcom findings demonstrates that the Ombuds commission is incapable of executing its basic function, and the fact that TNT still feels standing for confirmation is appropriate demonstrates that we're still dealing with egregiously bad judgment. Jclemens (talk) 23:23, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove --ɱ 23:25, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Remove Remove The loss of CUOS for being INVOLVED while not ideal, it is forgivable. However if I remember correctly, after the arbcom case they decided to blank their userpage, and turn it into a short incendiary paragraph on arbcom and specific members, which read as doubling down on their INVOLVED position at the time. While the "double down" approach is a great watch in tv and politics its just not appropriate for a steward. Terasail[✉️] 23:57, 5 February 2023 (UTC)4[reply]
  • I would have voted Keep Keep. I do not feel like the incident, however serious and relevant to a functionary role, has affected TNT as a steward, stewards were informed of it and if WMF would not have been fine with them continuing they would have acted. Everyone makes mistakes and sometimes big blunders too. Thank you for your service and hopefully your will be able to mend your reputation. --Base (talk) 12:17, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello folks! This is my third confirmation.
This year I have been really busy with real life developments (changed my undergrad, started doing some research in the new one), and so I wasn't nearly as active as I'd hoped to be. In my bouts of activity, I tackled the SRG backlogs, blocked some more proxies, but I've stopped blocking the P2P ones. I've also submitted a couple more commits to the code we use, including a new (pending) special page that is going to really help our workflow when finally approved. Despite my low activity, I think the work I did was positive, and thus I hope to be reconfirmed for one more year, where I do plan on fixing my schedules to allow me to properly engage with the projects. • Personal info: Hello everyone,

Long story short: after 11 years of service I'll resign. The fact that I even struggle to find time to write this statement says enough. For the past couple of years my private life has already asked for much of my attention, and the past year (and months) even more so. I don't expect this to change any time soon. Also, I'm planning to get married in April, which is of course exciting, but also leaves me even less time for Wikipedia. I'm sad that I have to write this, but for all this I must be honest to both myself and the Wikimedia community. And maybe, one day I'll return. Wikipedia will keep a special place in my heart.

Thank you for your continuing support for the past years. Trijnsteltalk 21:46, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello everyone! This is my first confirmation. It's been a fun and busy year, and I've learned a lot about the various areas of steward work.

I've spent time working on...SRG/SRP requests, IPBE requests, CU requests (spam/LTA/sock investigating), OS requests, misc requests on IRC/Discord, stewards@ emails, internal processes/discussions, global RfCs/bans...and the many other areas I learned exist :P

This year I've worked on expanding my knowledge of steward processes and functions, and would be happy to continue in this role. Over the next year, I hope to continue to learn and expand my ability to work in specialized areas, and to continue working towards improving steward processes, such as our in-development IP blocks wizard and related responses to the IPBE backlog.

As a disclosure, I work as a contractor for the WMF, as an associate in Movement Communications. In that role I mostly work on Diff and other WMF projects, such as the Sound Logo voting. I also wrote a post series on IP blocks, that I'll take any chance to plug...haha.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 03:36, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: Hello! This is my second confirmation since I got elected in 2021. My focus in this past year has been mostly on anti-vandalism and anti-spam. Activity wise this year I haven't been as consistent as I would like. Like many others also I am not free of off-wiki responsibilities, which requires me to sometimes lower my activity. I do however try to help where I can. I hope that with the communities community's support I can continue helping. Thank you. --Wiki13 (talk) 19:26, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personal info: This has been a particular year in real life, with many changes in my personal life, I changed jobs and I had to take a particular course of several months to be hired, during which I could not use wiki. Currently, for my work, I am present every other day. My work on Wiki always remains focused on the fight against spambots and LTAs, LWCUs, processing requests on SRG, etc. In the next year, therefore, I do not plan to have an inactivity like that of 2022 but I will be more present and ask to the community to confirm me for another year. Thank you

  • Personal info: Hello. This is my fifth confirmation. During last year I was active dealing with requests mostly on SRG and various other tasks from time to time (around 2,708 steward action in 2022). In addition, I used my steward access for fighting cross-wiki abuse/vandals/spammers and LTAs. Over the past year, I'm being active on SRG (especially global un/block), admin activity review, Global AbuseFilter, help on SRUC complicated requests and other tasks. Also, I cooperated with local CUs and sysops to solve cross-wiki issues.

Generally(CentralAuth), I'm bureaucrat, sysop and checkuser on Arabic Wikipedia, and sysop on multiple projects (especially Wikidata, Commons and Meta). Over the years, I have made more than 510K edits on Wikimedia wikis.

I would be happy to continue for another term. If you have any questions or comments or suggestions, I would be glad to hear them. Thank you --Alaa :)..! 19:32, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
