Tech News edit

As the year, at least according to the calendar used by Tech News, is drawing to end, I wanted to say thanks for the Tech News translations – both as a person writing Tech News and a Wikimedia editor who cares about the movement. It’s difficult enough to keep track of what’s happening if one speaks English. I’m happy there’s one place to get a weekly update of what’s happening if one doesn’t. The one true international language is translation. Thank you.

And, of course, for all your contributions to the newsletter, always making it a bit better and easier to translate. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome. I must also thank you for taking care of preparing it, the newsletter is indeed very important. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:14, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Plagiarism detection edit

Hi! You voted for improving plagiarism detection as an important suggestions in the community wishlist survey last year. I'm pinging people who showed interest in that task to tell them we have some suggestions for how things could look, if you'd like to glance at them and give us some feedback. They're available here: phab:T120435#2266283. It's easiest if comments are left in Phabricator, since that's where much of the development is happening, but they can be left on Meta too, of course. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 17:25, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

How to load gadgets with dependencies through global.js? edit

Hi. Can you help out a non-hacker. I can see how we add dependencies for a gadget, though if one uses the gadget directly from one's javacript files, I cannot work out how to apply the dependencies and the help pages don't help. To quote your cited request for change, one would load it directly by

mw.loader.load('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-markblocked.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

mw:ResourceLoader/Migration_guide_(users) says to use mw.loader.using then talks about wrapping functions, etc. which loses me. Can you describe the simple way that one would combine "mw.loader.using" with utilisation of "mw.loader.load" style syntax.

Thanks for any help.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:45, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Of course I will help you. This is basically mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#In practice:
mw.loader.using( [ 'mediawiki.util' ], function () {

    mw.loader.load( '//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-markblocked.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

} );
The function (or closure) is executed as soon as the dependecy is ready. I believe this is possible as well:
mw.loader.using( [ 'mediawiki.util' ] )
.done( function () {
    mw.loader.load( '//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-markblocked.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
} );
Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:02, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Kewl thanks, and presumably I can cluster each gadget that has the dependency inside the function.  — billinghurst sDrewth 15:19, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata notifications edit

Hey, I see you put the Wikidata notifications for created articles back into the issue to be distributed on Monday. Just to explain why I thought/think it fit better next week, here's my reasoning: We announced it in Tech/News/2017/19 a couple of weeks ago, including all dates through May. If we do it next week, we'll have a) announced it once when it started happening and b) the week when all the wikis got it. You think this week is better?

(Also: Very long issue this week. I think more people will pay attention to it, or anything else we'd add right now, next week. But that's not as important.) /Johan (WMF) (talk) 12:32, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Isn't couple of weeks ago too long? This was behind my decision. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:36, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
If we include it, has the date changed? Given that 13 June is so soon, it would make more sense to say when than "later", if it's still true. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 13:45, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I have no strong opinion on this. If you think it's better to have a single message for both past and future event, I have no problem with that. (Well, because of being busy I forgot to include it in the previous issue and now I wanted to make the delay as small as possible...) Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:54, 2 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tech ambassadors, "take two" edit

Hello tech ambassador! This month has seen a good influx of new faces in this crew \o/ , so it is time to reactivate our conversations. Now that we have a pretty good coverage of so many different projects, here are some topics for your consideration.

  1. Are there further thoughts on the role itself? I hope the questions available on Meta can help spark them. Please weigh in at Talk:Tech/Ambassadors/List#Tech ambassadors, take 2.
  2. How about we try and organise future collective work in a Phabricator workboard? Talk:Tech/Ambassadors/List#A Phab workboard for us? has all the details to explore this proposal.
  3. Finally, you are also welcome to comment at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T177923, should you happen to have suggestions for the Community Liaisons team, currently wondering how to measure "Wiki projects requesting beta features and other early deployments".

We hope to be able to host a live discussion in early 2018; until then, we're looking forward to hearing from you on Meta! All the best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk), on behalf of the Community Liaisons

Getting started on Phabricator edit

Greetings, ambassador!

As recently discussed within this group, we are ready to experiment with setting up a project and its related workboard on Phabricator, the platform used in the Wikimedia movement for project management, software bug reporting and feature requests. It will help us coordinate and cooperate better on projects that should require ambassadors' involvement.

For the time being, I'm just asking that you please add your Phabricator nickname next to your name in the ambassadors' table (you can create an account now if you don't have one already). I will send you further information soon! Thanks for your patience as we get to the operational stage of this effort :) Best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:00, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Global preferences ready for testing edit

Greetings,

I am contacting you because of your support for Global settings in the 2016 Community Tech Wishlist. Global preferences are now available for beta testing, and need your help before being released to the wikis.

  1. Read over the help page, it is brief and has screenshots
  2. Login or register an account on Beta English Wikipedia
  3. Visit Global Preferences and try enabling and disabling some settings
  4. Visit some other language and project test wikis such as English Wikivoyage, German Wiktionary, the Hebrew Wikipedia and test the settings
  5. Report your findings, experience, bugs, and other observations

Once the team has feedback on design issues, bugs, and other things that might need worked out, the problems will be addressed and global preferences will be sent to the wikis.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:47, 26 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

SVG Translate Community wishlist survey project edit

Hello! Thank you for voting for the SVG Translate project that was proposed in the 2017 Wishlist survey. The Community Tech team in the Wikimedia Foundation is beginning to start their work on the project. We're currently looking for feedback on some open questions which will allow us to come up with preliminary designs for the tool. If you are interested in being involved, you can watch the project page and join in the discussions on the talk page. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from your experiences. The Community Wishlist Survey edit

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

--Patriccck (talk) 20:03, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

A i v angličtině to píší s malým (visual editor). Matěj Suchánek (talk) 07:43, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), we are asking your help for Chinese, Ukrainian, Bengali, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Farsi, German, Cantonese, Finnish, Hindi, Thai, Dutch, and Greek, as these also matter to affiliates! If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 21:35, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sorry edit

Sorry that I tagged that translation for deletion by mistake. I was searching through contributions from some IP ranges that insert nonsense into translation. User script to access other watchlists edit

Hi Matěj Suchánek,

If you remember, you participated in the 2019 Community Wishlist Survey, including the discussion for reviving "Crosswatch" to allow for cross-wiki watchlists (Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Watchlists/Revive Crosswatch tool).

I sent you this MassMessage because I wanted to let you know that I have made a user script to make accessing your watchlists on different wikis easier, since for now that wishlist item has not been actioned.

The way it works is that, on any wiki, when you look at your watchlist, there is a button labeled "CA" that takes you to the CentralAuth page for you. There, when looking at your own information, each link to a wiki ("meta.wikimedia.org", "www.wikidata.org", "de.wikipedia.org", etc.) is changed so that it links to your watchlist on that wiki.

If you are interested in using it, just add mw.loader.load('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:DannyS712/Watchlist.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); to your global javascript page. This imports the code at m:User:DannyS712/Watchlist.js.

If you want to learn more, there is documentation for the script available at w:en:User:DannyS712/Watchlist. If you would like to discuss the script, talk to me at m:User talk:DannyS712.

Thanks, --05:50, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 needs translations edit

Hello!

I'm contacting you because you've already translated some messages for the Community Wishlist Survey. We need more translations for the 2020 edition, to create a survey that would serve as many users as we know.

The list below shows our needs by order of importance (most important first):

  1. The invitation sent to communities. It summarizes the process. We plan to distribute it soon on this year target wikis. The more translations we have, the better!
  2. The form for non-English speakers. Anyone should be able to add their wish, no matter which language they speak. Translating this short form is very important to encourage diversity and equity.
  3. The survey itself, where the entire process is described.
  4. The preload form, that provides more context on existing wishes.

Some languages are already covered (maybe by you), but some messages have been updated, and there is always some room for reviewing and polishing messages.

Thank you in advance for your help! This survey can't be successful without your assistance. :)

We hope to see you on the project talk page, and thank you in advance!

Wishlist: cs edit

— Draceane talkcontrib. 17:14, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ahoj, nejjednodušší je vzít konkrétní frázi (třeba "Najděte někoho, kdo by adoptoval váš nápad") a i s uvozovkami ji dát do vyhledávače.

Help wanted for global templates edit

Hi Matej,

You showed support for global templates in the past. Staff of the Wikimedia Foundation view this change as big. We need to convince the Wikimedia Foundation to start working on this. We have to reassure them there is sufficient support by local project communities.

You can help move this forward.

Please do setup a page on the local projects you are (most) active on in the language of the project. Tell your fellow editors why you believe global templates are necessary. Follow the local project decision process to come to a discussion outcome as support or not. There is plenty of time for discussion. Please reach a conclusion before the end of April 2021.

Please translate the coordinating page on meta to languages you are proficient in. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gathering_support_from_local_projects_for_global_templates

Please add a line to this meta page with a link to a discussion page on your local project(s).

The goal is to have the Wikimedia Foundation include a program to develop infrastructure for global templates in their 2021/2022 Annual Plan. The Wikimedia Foundation will decide on the Annual Plan in May/June this year.

The aim is to have several dozen local project communities to show support, and little concerns, issues or objections. Of course, any project can continue to use their local templates.

When you have questions about this initiative you can reach me at ad huikeshoven.org or + 31 6 40293574, and also on Telegram and Signal. You can also raise questions on the talk page on meta. Maybe some people would like to discuss this initiative in a meeting. Please let me know whether you would like to join a Zoom meeting in February.

Regards,

Ad Huikeshoven (talk) 15:25, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, and request edit

Hello, I wanted to thank you for working on čeština language translation (I noticed one related to my project), and was wondering if you had time to translate a short announcement: Universal Code of Conduct/2021 consultations/Announcement, or could let me know who might be available to do this. I am hoping to send around 5 April to Czech projects.

I also noticed you are a sysop on Czech Wikipedia. During this month, my team hopes to hold consultations on cswiki and we are looking for a trusted local user to provide a summary of the input from the cswiki community that we can deliver to a drafting committee writing proposals for community consideration.

This process is explained at Universal Code of Conduct/2021 consultations#Consultation structure.

Our team would be very thankful for the help with either of these tasks, or if you can advise us if any other users might be available to do this. Xeno (WMF) (talk) 23:42, 2 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Xeno (WMF): Hello. I did the translation. As for the community consultation, I am not confident with running the consultation myself, but you might be interested of a current project-wide discussion about the position of arbitration commitees. I added an early notice about the consultation there. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:20, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for translating the announcement and posting that note to the project! Xeno (WMF) (talk) 12:41, 3 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

https://tools.wmflabs.org/cssk/scripts/cssk.js edit

Hi there!

The script at https://tools.wmflabs.org/cssk/scripts/cssk.js is responsible for 18,417 JavaScript errors every week mostly due to phab:T72470. I was informed that you might know something about this script. Is it possible that I could work with you to get the errors addressed or the script disabled if it is no longer maintained?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Jon (WMF) (talk) 16:17, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Jon (WMF): Hello, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I know nothing about it but that it was supposed to assist in a cooperation between Czech and Slovak Wikipedias. This cooperation was formally closed very recently, in 2021 (the box on the top of that page announces it, following this discussion on the author's talk page).
I'm a bit busy IRL, so I cannot offer you much assistance. I can see the script being invoked from many users' personal subpages. So perhaps we can tell the users that their scripts contain a mistake and that they should disable/remove it (or we do it for them) and can possibly re-activate it as the gadget. (Now if the gadget was broken, it would be a good reason to have it disabled as well.)
What do you think? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:22, 8 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you could add me as a maintainer of the tool (Jdlrobson) or permission to find someone else who can give me it, I'd happily help get this fixed. Jon (WMF) (talk) 19:47, 12 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jon (WMF): I guess you want to contact cs:User:Blahma then (which you apparently did in January without response...), since he is the maintainer and should be able to appoint others. If you got no response, I will start taking actions on the wiki. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 11:38, 15 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Nowiki edit

I looked at your edit to Tech/News/2021/29 and felt rather sheepish. Yes. Of course. That could have rather undesired effects if left as I wrote it. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 09:27, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's a bit understandable, though, because the magic word couldn't be interpreted when you added it. And it was very easily noticable now, so I doubt it would pass to delivery. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:30, 15 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

A Community Wishlist Survey update waiting for translation edit

Hello! Would you be able to translate the newest update about the Community Wishlist Survey 2022? In short: instead of November 2021, the CWS will happen in January 2022. We would also like to make other improvements. We can't do that without having the volunteers' opinions. This is what we ask for in the message.

After the weekend, I'll send this to all Village Pumps, Cafes, Forums, etc. Our team would like as many people as possible not to ignore this message. Let's remove the language barrier.

Thank you! SGrabarczuk (WMF) 01:29, 4 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Update to commentlinks.js gadget edit

I am about to update my comment links gadget to link the comment's timestamp rather than add a separate [ link ] button. If you prefer the old style, that gadget will be available at commentlinks-v1.js. As before, this gadget is experimental and may stop working at any time, see T275729 for the task to make this a proper feature. Thanks, ESanders (WMF) (talk) 12:15, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me now. I think it really makes sense to use the comment timestamp for that because it is consistent with other interfaces and also other websites. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:54, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@ESanders (WMF): Regression: whenever I click on a comment timestamp on cswiki, I get "This comment could not be found. It might have been deleted or moved." error notification, no highlight or jump happens. By examining the anchor, I think it doesn't correctly handle local timezones (that's why the tool works here on Meta-Wiki). --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:11, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll take a look later. ESanders (WMF) (talk) 06:21, 2 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
The links are working for me. Are you using some gadget or non-standard preference that might be affecting this? ESanders (WMF) (talk) 11:48, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
@ESanders (WMF): I tried it with safemode=1 and still have the same problem. My preferences include:
  • Skin: Vector legacy (2010)
  • Date format: "No preference"
  • Time zone: "Europe/Prague"
cswiki's time zone is CET (+1), or CEST (+2) with DST (at the moment, it's CEST). --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:03, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Which page are you testing on? ESanders (WMF) (talk) 13:00, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedie:Pod_l%C3%ADpou_(technika)?safemode=1&uselang=cs&useskin=vector for example. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:14, 9 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Disable machine translation in ContentTranslation tool for some user group edit

Hi Matěj Suchánek, hope you fine, If you allow me a question, I noticed you have a recent contribution in phabricator about ContentTranslation Tool and I have just a simple question about similar task here, Is it possible?, or need some Tool enhancement?, if not, should we ask for Tool disabling for that user group? Thank you in advance --Mohanad Kh Talk 08:56, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mohanad Kh. I'm sorry but I cannot tell if it is possible or not. I'm not in charge. Maybe UOzurumba (WMF) should be made aware of that. The outcome could be a task like phab:T323842 and an outreach to your community like [1]. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 11:10, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thx a lot, hope UOzurumba (WMF) can help --Mohanad Kh Talk 12:29, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Number of items (search results) in "What links here" edit

Hi Matěj, sorry, I was to late to answer to you during the discussion period on the Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Multimedia and Commons/Add the number of items (search results) in "What links here". So I still trying to understand your guidance. I am on wikipedia since many years but from the .js subject I have really no idea:

Sorry! Can you help? Thank you already! Regards --W like wiki (talk) 00:55, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

PS: Maybe it is easier when you make the needed changes on "my" .js pages than explaining me again. Feel free! --W like wiki (talk) 01:00, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@W like wiki: I cannot make changes to your .js pages, because I lack the permissions.
But it seems you did it right. Now when I visit a "What links here", e.g., de:Spezial:Linkliste/Wikipedia:Hauptseite and load your de:User:W like wiki/common.js, there is now a "(zählen)" link beneath the "Los" button, and when you click "(zählen)", it will show you the number. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:53, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oookay, I'm getting closer, thank you for your fast answer! And now the "(zählen)" link exists, perfect! So my feedback/results:
  • on de-wikipedia: Two a bit strange things:
  • on en-wikipedia:: it works well, e.g. on en:Special:WhatLinksHere/Ještěd is now an "External tools: Link count, Transclusion count, Sorted list" link. Here the numbers of "Link Count" and Special:WhatLinksHere are exactly same: 46 ...!
  • on meta: neather.
I hope Matěj you are fine with my questions/feedback!? Regards --W like wiki (talk) 17:43, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
The script will only work for you on dewiki. You can insert the code to User:W like wiki/global.js instead, and it will work on any wiki.
The links you see on other wikis, such as Link count, Transclusion count, are inserted locally, likely via interface messages. Each wiki decides what (if anything) they want display there.
The inconsistency in numbers is probably caused by (not) counting links to redirects or (not) counting links to non-main namespaces by either tool.
Paradoxically, though living in Czech, I can't see Ještěd from the window because I'm 100km away. But some say it's visible from here, too.

--Kacir (talk) 15:32, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
