Hello, Pppery. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Also worthwhile acquainting yourself with the functions of global user pages. Happy editing!

I guess making a post to Meta:RFH (but not Meta:RFD for some reason) makes me well-known. Pppery (talk) 21:07, 17 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Or it was time you were welcomed ... or users with redlink talk pages stand out editing in RC and those who don't need to, shouldn't <grin>  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:48, 17 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Restricted viewer access in WikiJournals edit

Hi. A few people mentioned the issue of restricted viewer access to some files, discussions, and user identities. A discussion was added at Talk:WikiJournal#Hidden_contribution and I thought I should notify you incase you wanted to further comment. I'm happy to add a note under your comment if you prefer, but I wanted to avoid spamming the discussion section. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 14:02, 8 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Some oddities around Module:Documentation / Template:Documentation. Could you please assist? edit

Hello Pppery, could you please assist me with Module:Documentation? Template:Documentation invokes it and somehow is generating all sorts of lint errors, such as having tt, font, and center tags, yet I cannot find any? Do you have any idea why this might be happening? (an example of a tt error flagged that is just template call, same thing for center, example search). Thank you! --TheSandDoctor Talk 22:06, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@TheSandDoctor: Linter is rather far from my area of expertise, but I think that that just means that there is a lint error in the doc page somewhere (in this case, there are <tt> tags in the parameters section of Template:Please see/doc and <center> tags in the parameters of Template:User from WMF project/doc). * Pppery * it has begun 22:12, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yup, that appears to be it! Thanks so much   --TheSandDoctor Talk 22:14, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Notifying main contributors of the page about XfD edit

Hello.

It is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the articles that you are nominating for deletion.

In English WP, it has been consensus for years to extend the practice to all pages, not articles only. Where is my notification? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:23, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I see no point in notifying indefinitely blocked users, because they can't respond. You can see from my user talk namespace contributions that I do generally notify the creators of pages I nominate for deletion. * Pppery * it has begun 19:20, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
I obviously can respond. It’s you unwilling to listen. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 05:53, 19 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

BTW you and Fastily fouled up the only live example of table concatenation at en:Wikipedia_talk:Lua/Archive_1 #Returning the concatenation of numerous words. Note that I don’t seek undeletion; I indeed seek apologies. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 21:17, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Identifying Lobby Teams edit

Hi, You archived my Community Wishlist Survey 2022 contribution, but I feel I did not express my case clearly enough. Certainly I am aware of tools like masz, but I am more concerned with corporate efforts rather than individual efforts, and such approaches are not subject to stylometric analysis; instead they are more likely to be identified via analysis of relations between editors, as well as areas of contribution.

For instance, it is not unusual, given any area of expertise, for editors to agree most of the time - however, if they agree *all* of the time then their relationship becomes suspect.

I am not aware of such tools yet existing for wikipedia. (20040302 (talk) 13:33, 11 January 2022 (UTC))Reply

You are talking to entirely the wrong person. All I did was make an edit to the page after it was archived. * Pppery * it has begun 17:39, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Looking at that page I randomly see user:JSutherland (WMF)/autoTranslationMarkup.js; wonder if that would help, or if you use something similar? Xeno (WMF) (talk) 00:49, 25 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
No, I prefer do it manually. I've seen so many pages with translation markup that's badly screwed up (but can't be fixed easily since their are already a ton of translations), that I'm not willing to risk using a script (especially one with the known caveat that "Please note that this script outputs markup that does not completely follow the guidelines for translation markup - it tags each line, which is messy"). A few months ago I fixed several pages where that or a similar script interpreted the opening bracket in an an altered quote as the beginning of a URL and added an unclosed tvar tag resulting in literal translate markup appearing -- in 2017 and no one noticed for five years. Even after I did fix the page, no other tadmin marked the fix for translation for another 3 months (which was what lead me to request translation admin rights). * Pppery * it has begun 00:55, 25 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Web2Cit/Early_adopters translation edit

Hi, Pppery! Thanks for enabling translation for Web2Cit/Early adopters. I saw your comment in your edition's summary and I apologize I hadn't completed all the preparation tasks I was expected to. Actually, I just followed the steps here, where it just says that I have to wrap the whole content between <translate></translate>. I didn't know I had to split the content into translate chunks, or that I had to wrap variables. Maybe the tutorial should be updated to better reflect this? What do you think? Thanks again! Diegodlh (talk) 03:24, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've copied this to mw:Help talk:Extension:Translate/Page translation example#Should mention more about segmentation?. There is some documentation about proper translate markup at mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration#Segmentation and locally at Meta:Internationalization guidelines, but both of those are directed at translate admins like myself, not end users like you, so you raise a valid point. * Pppery * it has begun 03:32, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also, for what it's worth, I didn't expect you to do it perfectly (as you can tell, it took me 5 edits to properly prepare the page and even then I made a formatting mistake that I didn't catch until just now). All I was expecting was some effort in markup segmentation and tvaring content that isn't translatable like filenames and bits of code. * Pppery * it has begun 03:38, 28 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Grammar error on article edit

I actually caused the grammar error on the Wikimedia_Highlights,_September_2012 page about 10 years ago. I thought I should at least fix it since it's not grammatically correct to read "the Curation Toolbar, which appears next to a new page, offering..." Offering should be "offers," or else it's a sentence fragment with no active verb. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by OjdvQ9fNJWl (talk)

Look at the context; it's a list of noun phrases, not a list of sentences, so "offering" is correct. * Pppery * it has begun 14:31, 4 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Good point. I did indeed miss the context (it looked to me like you were just changing a standalone paragraph to a list for no good reason and in a way that invalidated translations). * Pppery * it has begun 14:33, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Fixed (and I violated my usual rule against marking changes that invalidate translations for translation, which was the motivation behind reverting at first). * Pppery * it has begun 14:38, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translation question on Web2Cit main page edit

Hi Pppery, sorry to bother you with this, but @Diegodlh requested a while ago to mark up the main page of Web2Cit for translation. Turns out that nobody has translated it and we need to make some major updates to the main page to make it more accesible for people that wants to know in a nutshell what the project is about. We were wondering what's the best procedure for this -- shall we archive this page? What we should do? (aside from learning from our mistakes, such as not asking to mark for translation something that's not yet ready, which we sincerely apologize). Any guidance would be extremely helpful! Scann (talk) 23:17, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

No, I have little interest in debugging this issue in the first place, especially given that my edit is presumably not responsible for the problem - all it did is stop some translations from showing up in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. * Pppery * it has begun 17:20, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ties in site rankings edit

Good day, any idea on how to fix Wikiquote#Statistics? --Minorax«¦talk¦» 13:32, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

The reason seems to be that the Finnish and Serbian wikiquotes have the exact same number of articles as each other, which confuses the code that ranks them. This will probably be a temporary phenomenon that will fix itself, but I'll give GreenC, who maintains the bot that updates these, a ping anyway. * Pppery * it has begun 14:40, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
User:Minorax: I can't see what the error looks like because the # of articles is no longer a tie. I recently updated the JSON data so ties are shown equally ie. 2 sites can share the same rank. This was requested by User:-jem-. I had no idea how this would impact existing users of the data, but honored their request, because we should post the data truthfully and let the end-user application sort out how to handle ties. This is the first I heard it caused a problem. If you can describe what the error looked like that would help. Also pinging User:Johnuniq who has been involved in the template side of the project. -- GreenC (talk) 15:47, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see the error. When there is a tie, one of them (Finnish in this case) ended up in the last row (#72) and looked like:
[[:en:error: language code: -1 not recognized language|error: language code: -1 not recognized]]
No idea where this error string originates, it's not in Module:NUMBEROF or its sub-modules. But NUMBEROF returns -1 in function rank() which is how it signifies an error. -- GreenC (talk) 16:17, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Probably the way Module:NUMBEROF/rank is programmed will make this difficult to resolve. The associative array indexing depends on a unique site for each rank. I'll wait for reply from Johnunique in case there is an easy fix, otherwise will need to revert the JSON data to strictly sequential ranking. -- GreenC (talk) 16:59, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
The problem is that Wikiquote/Table uses {{For nowiki|...|count={{NUMBEROF|active|wikiquote}}}} to generate the table. For example, if there are 72 projects, it will list 72 rows. However, if two projects have the same rank, only ranks from 1 to 71 inclusive exist—there is no project ranked #72. I'll think about that. NUMBEROF cheats and overwrites the duplicate rank so only the last project with a particular rank would be shown for that rank. Johnuniq (talk) 23:04, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I am sorry that this problem has arisen from my request to GreenC; I understand that in the long run the possibility of ties should be contemplated because they better reflect reality and our code should adapt to that, but since GreenC has separated the data version with ties (thanks!), for me it is no longer a problem. -jem- (talk) 20:56, 5 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Why did you write that useful links are "not an improvement"? edit

Thanks. Apokrif (talk) 16:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Because they're not useful. Template redirects to a help page on how templates work. CSS redirects to a pointer to a help page on how CSS works. CentralAuth and SUL both redirects to Help:Unified login. I find it difficult to believe that anyone would want to go to any of these pages from reading the page documenting Global interface editors - they're basic-level help most readers of the page would already be familiar with. * Pppery * it has begun 16:53, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
How do you know what readers of a page are familiar with? Apokrif (talk) 17:10, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
