Thank on page to be deletedEdit

Hi! I saw you thanked for my edit on Template talk:Template parameter usage—and deleted the page right after that. I got an email about the thank, but no on-wiki notification: notifications and alerts disappear when the corresponding page gets deleted (if there’s any). I’m not sure what the solution could be, but please be aware that those who don’t get emails about thanks will never notice your such thanks. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:49, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi: hmm seems like a bug (in that the otherwise successfully generated notification is being deleted when it maybe shouldn't be). — xaosflux Talk 14:20, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
No, it’s (intended to be) a feature. I found phab:T93673 about it (I haven’t read through the whole conversation, but the description already explains the idea behind this behavior). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:39, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered usersEdit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

QuestionEdit

Hi this is CT-971 can you please direct me to someone who can about how to become an admin or if you know could you tell me. Thanks: CT-971 (16:49, 11 January 2022 (UTC))

  • @CT-971: to become an admin on the Meta-Wiki, you will need a showing of community support here: Meta:Requests for adminship; however as your account appears to be very newly registered with almost no global contributions (c.f. Special:CentralAuth/CT-971) there is no chance that the community will support such a request. The good news is that most activities on WMF wiki's don't require any administrator access, especially the core activities of adding and improving knowledge content for readers. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 16:53, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. :) CT-971 (talk) 16:54, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Question and AdviceEdit

Do you think that it would be wise to delete pages that no one uses anymore and if you do can you please direct me to someone that I can bring this up to because I have been to a lot of pages that have not been viewed in five to six years.

       Thanks: CT-971
@CT-971: hello. First, please use a signature when making talk posts. As far as your question, it depends. Some pages are kept as historical records of things, so will be kept forever. See Meta:Deletion policy for information on deletion here on the meta-wiki, including why we may delete things and the processes that can be used to request various types of deletions. In general it isn't really a good use of time to go search for pages that might not be useful and start deletion discussions on them - instead only focus on pages that have significant problems. — xaosflux Talk 15:37, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm a noob CT-971 (talk) 15:39, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
@CT-971: I understand, which is why I don't recommend you work on searching the meta-wiki for potential deletion candidates. In general, maintenance and management of the meta-wiki is handled by more experienced contributors, a better place to start is likely in one of the content projects in your native language such as one of the Wikipedias or Wiktionaries. — xaosflux Talk 15:51, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok but I want to be just like you. :) CT-971 (talk) 15:59, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
@CT-971: my primary contributions are to the English Wikipedia, to learn more about how to start on that project a good launching point it: w:en:Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure. — xaosflux Talk 16:01, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

About deletion Meta:Translate extension/ru with reason "not a translation"Edit

Hi! You recently deleted page Meta:Translate extension/ru by request from @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh (restored now). But this request should be applied to the separate element Translations:Meta:Translate extension/18/ru, not to the whole translated page. Alas, the templates put down in the translation elements are transcluded on the main page, and this can lead to confusion. Please be careful in the future! Best wishes ;) Kaganer (talk) 07:49, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

@Kaganer: thanks for the catch, translation vandalism is quite a pain. — xaosflux Talk 10:53, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
@Kaganer and NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh: This issue can be worked around: I always use the wikitext {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Translations|{{speedy|not a translation}}}} in such cases, so that the template appears on the Translations-namespace page, but not the real translated page. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:02, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi: If only SWViewer allows that when tagging. Thank you anyway. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 10:03, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Checking InEdit

I think that you remember me but I will not make assumptions. I did the adventure in Wikipedia what should I do now.

         Thanks --CT-971 (talk) 19:37, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
@CT-971: w:en:Wikipedia:A primer for newcomers is a good overview, then you can start getting to editing. You could improve content, or add new content. A good place to ask more follow up questions on how to get started is w:en:Wikipedia:Teahouse. — xaosflux Talk 19:57, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Special:Diff/22623102Edit

Hello. You closed this section but seems like you missed out Acebot. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 10:27, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@Minorax: thank you for the note, I'll go process that (removal, no response from operator) and note it on the archive. — xaosflux Talk 10:40, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Help, pleaseEdit

In trying to edit an article for publication, I can't remember how to give a full reference just once and then a short <ref> afterwards. Could you recommend someone who would be willing to help? The article is in my WP Sandbox. Thank you for your time. Stay Safe and Well!!! Shir-El too 09:45, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

@Shir-El too: this is the Meta-Wiki, a project about managing other projects. It sounds like you would like help on the English Wikipedia (enwiki). Here are some pointers: (a) The most important thing is that you use a reference, so even just typing ref, typing out everything you know about the reference, and closing it is a great start. (b) Most of the enwiki editing tools have an "insert reference" button that will give you a wizard to help. (c) A long set of directions can be found here: w:en:Wikipedia:Citing sources. Finally, for general help on enwiki you can follow up here: w:en:Wikipedia:Teahouse. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 11:12, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Truly: many thanks. Stay Safe and Well!!! Shir-El too 19:07, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Deleting my talk pageEdit

Hi, Xaosflux. User:Kadıköylü added a warning message to my talk page about the guidelines that basically belong to the Turkish Wikipedia. As User:Kadıköylü has mentioned the guideline, specifically about the talk page, it is in force on the Turkish Wikipedia, not Meta-Wiki. I think that should be deleted because it is independent of the content here. FYI, 1997kB. --Victor Trevor (talk) 16:21, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

@Victor Trevor, you have changed Styyx's explanations. Please do not ping me again. Kadıköylü (talk) 16:26, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
@Victor Trevor: the deletion policy doesn't cover that, it is fine for you to leave the page blank or put something else on it. — xaosflux Talk 17:44, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Template:HumorEdit

Hi Xaosflux. I think that people meant to merge Template:Humor/fr into Template:Humor and then redirect Template:Humor/fr to Template:Humor. --Tartafs (talk) 15:04, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

See Meta:Requests_for_deletion#Template:Humour. — xaosflux Talk 15:11, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Abuse logEdit

Why my edit on my own page had been selected as an abuse log?--Noman(talk)•(contribs) 19:39, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

@আবদুল্লাহ আল নোমান আবদুল্লাহ that is safe to ignore, there is a system called the 'abuse filter' but it isn't really just about "abuse". This just indicates that the edit you made might need to be checked by someone else to see if it is problematic. Your edit seems OK, I suggest you remove your "class number" as it is can be problematic to advertise too much personal information about yourself. — xaosflux Talk 19:48, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Special:Redirect/logid/47203934Edit

Following up the above grant of patroller group by you on my previous request: it expired today as was scheduled, could you make a re-grant? I believe I'm doing alright and am fairly active and having the right(s) on a couple of other wikis, I think it'd be handy. Thanks, —Svārtava (t/u) • 16:12, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

QuestionEdit

It appears that you are a high trusted user and I am asking you if you will be a global sysop or a steward in the future. 197.207.204.73 12:07, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

I might, I already volunteer for several things and would want to make sure I have time to commit to anything extra. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 14:13, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
I hope to see you a steward in the 2023 steward elections. 197.207.204.73 14:50, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

+sysop on cuwiki?Edit

Hi. I've got a request in for +sysop on cuwiki, can you handle that? I actually only need pagemover, but I've been told pagemover doesn't exist there, so just ask for sysop. RoySmith (talk) 19:48, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Oh, sorry, I was looking at the wrong crat list. RoySmith (talk) 19:51, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
@RoySmith sorry, I'm not on that project, go to Special:ListUsers/bureaucrat on there and you can see who can help you. — xaosflux Talk 19:51, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
