Hello Pharos. I have promoted you to Administrator. Your RfA was certainly a peculiar beast; the trend swung quite unexpectedly, no? Goes to show that sticking it out can be well worth it. Category:Proposed projects work

edit

Wow, this is among the most messed categories we have. :-) You may use the flood flag. ;-) --Nemo 09:07, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, well done! I think that the main problem is what to do with pages listed in strategy:Category:Proposals for new projects.
With regard to categorization, some proposals are already marked as {{historical}}; if possible, it would be interesting to see if there are many outdated proposals around, and in that case to reduce the clutter marking them as historical with a specific category and then using DynamicPageList in each category or on some page to separately list valid and outdated proposals. --Nemo 16:20, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wiknic CN banner

edit

Hey Pharos,

I noticed your CN banner scheduled for 3 weeks coming up anon and logged in. I think that's extreme over kill and wanted to think about a smaller broadcast. Broadcasting to the whole US is an incredibly large audience for something that is a 'relatively' small draw. Even if we get 1000 people which I think is reasonable it's still a tiny tiny portion of the people seeing the banner and most of them won't be interested (and possibly annoyed) and it makes them look at banners less and less. This especially true when we get almost 100M page views a day from the US.

I think if you want something up for 'longer' you may want to consider a geonotice on enWiki. For the CN, if you still want one, we probably want to think much shorter with only 1-2 days anonymous and 3-4 days logged in or 2 small spurts of 1 day logged in/logged out soon and 1 closer to the event. Jalexander (talk) 18:46, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

This campaign appeals to a universal reader interest I think, moreso even than the numerous nationally-promoted wiki-conferences on CN that are confined to a single event in a single city. The Great American Wiknic was quite successful last year in running for this period of time (2 weeks, not 3), without any complaint at all, and also succeeded in spawning Wikipedia Loves Libraries- which we will be pushing again during this Wiknic season. And I don't think that radically cutting down on the exposure to the general readership will be helpful for these efforts.--Pharos (talk) 02:30, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
It seems to me that we had this conversation last year too... the Wiknic brought in, what, 500 people total, nationally? Pharos, I have to tell you, you're underestimating the value of this tool. You're using what would - in a commercial buy - be an effective value of several MILLION dollars to advertise this event. I agree with James. Your request is too broad. Far, far, too broad. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 18:46, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I note that you disregarded our comments about this, and turned the campaign on anyway. That's not how things work, Pharos. You're supposed to demonstrate consensus for a banner, and you're far from that. Beyond that, James is the Foundation's designee for the tool and he raised an objection. I also raised an objection. That's a long way from consensus. I've disabled anon, but left logged-in on while we figure this out. James may choose to overrule me on that, and he has my blessing and support either way. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 00:21, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Philippe, the campaign has been on the calendar since April, with not one negative comment; that was community consensus here. This is not an exclusive WMF tool, and objections at the last minute are less than ideal. For now, I'm going to talk to James and try to work out a standard system for these types of events, and when logged-in and anonymous get activated.--Pharos (talk) 01:02, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hey Pharos, I thinking having it up some is totally acceptable but given that we have it up on the watchlist now and how much it's seen as well we probably don't need it up forever. I'm sure we can come up with something though to make sure that it has enough exposure. How about a week at anonymous (perhaps at less the 100% , maybe 25-50? ), I have less of an issue with 2 weeks for logged in users though it may not be as necessary with the geonotice you have up (though would be good for non enwiki users). At some level this is a WMF owned tool (and always has been) but I do think the community should be able to use it where needed, we just don't want to have it be the 'wild wild west' that it has been for a very long time (as you know from last year etc). Jalexander (talk) 02:13, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
That sounds reasonable James, a 2 week run logged-in, with the only second half including anonymous (at a reduced %). This type of schedule could also work for WLL-type events too. And we can probably drop the national watchlist notice when CN is on.--Pharos (talk) 02:07, 9 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've dropped the national watchlist notice a few days ago, and I'm going to turn on anonymous with the CN starting Monday.--Pharos (talk) 02:34, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

For what it's worth, I don't disagree with James/Philippe regarding the use of CentralNotice to advertise Wiknics. This is the type of event that's better with (strict) geotargeting and watchlist notices, in my opinion. There are a number of tangential issues that need to be addressed, though. --MZMcBride (talk) 18:06, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

on organization and structure

edit

Hi Pharos,

Recently you commented that you feel local groups become a bit more active when they elect officers, assign roles, and form structure. You also suggested that this seems connected with incorporation in your mind.

I just want to reiterate that there is no actual connection between that sort of internal organization and the legal step of incorporation. Incorporation can be useful when handling finances, insurance, or legal matters. But it is totally independent of the organization and role structure of a group. Most community groups at all levels of civic life elect officers, have a treasurer and local bank account, and have varying levels of formality in how they define what each person handles. And for the most part these groups are not incorporated -- especially when they are only a few dozen people, or handling a few thousand dollars a year. That's just an extra expense and formality.

Incorporation does not magically make people become more active. Within Wikimedia we have some chapters that both incorporated and jumped through the further hoops of chapter recognition, and ended up doing no more, and sometimes less, than they had before becoming a chapter. On the other hand, when a group is passionate about what they are doing - say, WikiProject Tree of Life, or Wiki Loves Monuments, they have no trouble divvying up work, appointing people to specialize in different dimensions, and getting things done.

Once you have an active group that is growing and needs administrative support, forming an organization around their work makes sense. If you form a group in order to form a group, you attract people who like that sort of Nomic, and not people who like to get project work done; which doesn't always lead to the best-tasting pancakes.

Cheers, SJ talk  05:42, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

A large part of the motivation for incorporating a US federation is actually so that local groups can be full and equal participants ***without having to incorporate or file any paperwork***, as the federation would "sponsor" or "incubate" their activities, while also giving them a democratic voice in the management of the larger federation.--Pharos (talk) 16:29, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay. Can you make that clearer in the pages here? SJ talk  05:27, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pharos, The language in the wiknic central notice seems odd to me:

Hey Pharos,

I noticed you turned off the ToU banner campaign, the legal team has said that needs to be up for the whole 30 days as notice so I've put it back on. Right now it's up for a maximum of 20% and 2 views, I wish we could have it auto fall back for that 20% ( instead of showing empty) but sadly that isn't possible yet. I'm not sure if you did it by accident or on purpose (I know I've done some silly things with fat fingers when doing CN campaigns from my phone for example) but If it's causing issues with the wicnic banner or something like that I'm happy to try and work with you of course. I'm currently out at dinner but will be keeping an eye here and when I get home :) Jalexander--WMF 03:33, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Edit-a-thon Draft Report on Meta

edit

Hello Pharos, I’m from the Program Evaluation & Design team at the WMF. Late last year we received data on edit-a-thons which were completed between September 2013 and September 2014--now the edit-a-thon evaluation report draft is ready for your review. I'm reaching out now because we would love your feedback before we announce the report to the broader community.

  • Does the analysis and presentation resonate with your programs?
  • How is the report useful to you as a program leader?
  • What other data would help to tell the story of edit-a-thons?

Also, would you be willing to contribute a quote for the report? For example, what motivates you to lead edit-a-thons? What does success look like to you? If you can send a quote by August 16th I would love to include it in the report.

In this report we were able to present 121 edit-a-thons that brought in 2,275 participants and included 5,272 articles created or improved. We expect that this report will help our communities have a more comprehensive view of editathons around the world.

If you want to discuss edit-a-thons and the report findings with other program leaders, we’re hosting a virtual panel of program leaders with group discussion on the themes and findings the week of August 24th. If you have key themes you would like to discuss in the hangout, please do share them on the report talk page!

The estimated plan for review:

  • Program leaders who submitted data to review until August 16.
  • L&E to incorporate feedback and announce on the PE&D mailing list and social media the week of August 17.
  • WMF blog post and a virtual panel the week of August 24.

Thank you again for all your work to track and showcase the results of your edit-a-thons. If you can give feedback on this report, we would appreciate the chance to highlight program leader insights and improve both this and future reports. Abittaker (WMF) (talk) 17:21, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process

edit

Hello!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

Given your role as a Meta Administrator who is active in the area of Central Notice, I encourage you to:

Regards

Jseddon (WMF) (talk) Advancement Associate (Community Engagement) -- 03:01, 28 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Pharos:. I just wanted see whether you would be interested in giving any input to a request process for Central Notice. It'll be a requirement of all campaigns on Central Notice to go through it and for me it's really important to get input of the other CN Admins and Meta Admins. It wont be set in stone so we can make changes as we go on but I'd love for it to get off to a smooth start. My plan is to get something in place in the next few weeks so please feel free to Leave comments. Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 03:06, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Marthacustis appeal

edit

by way of appeal

  1. points on wikidata remain
  2. do you want points for effort or outcome? as an admin you can see that the new articles were fine on their own merits. should i create them here on meta, for another editor to move and claim the points?
  3. i object to editors bringing english drama here, and making the comment "i reverted you because you are wrong"; "this user is blocked and articles deleted." would you call that behavior disruptive ?
please let me know how you want to handle the scoring of this work. Marthacustis (talk) 14:11, 27 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Library User Group is being renamed!

edit

Hello! In the past few months, the Wikipedia Library User Group has been undergoing some major planning and developments. We just finished our very first open call with the user group members, which was a great success (see the meeting minutes). If you joined us during the meeting, we’d like to thank you for your interest. If not, not to worry, we have lots of things planned for the user group in which you can participate.

This message is to inform you that based on the input received from the user group members and the founding members, it was agreed that the Wikipedia Library User Group’s name be reconsidered by a voting process. As a valued member of the user group, we’d like to invite you to vote on the list of potential names. You can vote by following this link. The poll will run for a timeframe of two weeks. Picture of the Assamese Dao

edit

Dear Pharos. I'm planning to use this picture of a Assamese sword for a new article. It's clearly a public domain, which means that it should be available in Wikipedia. But the search in Wikipedia is too difficult, I cannot find it. Can you please help me find this image in Wikipedia, or perhaps upload it to Wikipedia if not available?--Rochelimit (talk) 17:08, 14 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)

edit

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Connecting with local Wikipedians for event on March 28

edit

Hi Pharos,

I'm new to the Wikimedia community, but hoping that this will reach you! I wanted to let you and the rest of the Allegheny Wikimedians know about an event coming up on March 28th that looks like it would align with your March 2020 Art & Feminism theme: the Women+ in Design Pittsburgh group is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to add more women designers, architects, and other artists and creatives to the online resource.

Here's a little more information about the event (which you can also find at our website):

Please join Women+ in Design Pittsburgh as we welcome Despina Stratigakos, author of "Where Are the Women Architects?," and Lori Brown, founder of ArchiteXX, a group dedicated to transforming the architecture profession for women, to Pittsburgh.

In partnership with students and faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, we will be adding and expanding entries for women designers across industries including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, graphic design, and engineering to the online resource.

No prior Wikipedia editing experience is necessary, lists of female designers will be provided, and additional entry ideas are welcome. Computers will be available, but you may bring your own laptop. Tutorials for beginner Wikipedians will begin at 10 am, and you are free to come and go as you wish throughout the event. Breakfast will be provided.

People of all genders and professions are encouraged to attend as we increase the visibility and representation of women designers.

If you are interested in participating or potentially helping guide volunteers at the event, please email us at womenindesignpgh@gmail.com. We appreciate any advice or tips you may be able to offer. If there is a way that we can collaborate with you further, that would be wonderful.

I hope to hear from you!

MassMessage sender?

Hello Pharos. I hope that you're okay. It seems that you are manually notifying every Chapter/User Group talk page for every SWAN announcement. Nothing wrong with that but have you considered applying for mass-message sender permissions to easily do that? The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas on the Wikimedia 2030 strategy process. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for a future Global Council.

Following up on the August, September, October, November, and January SWAN meetings and June's All-Affiliates Brand Meeting, as well as strategic and outreach topics of mutual concern to all affiliates, this month we are meeting on Sunday February 21, and you are all invited to RSVP here.

To help set priorities for the SWAN agenda, and also to help manage which global conversations should be a focus in general, we have set up and invite everyone to participate at this SWAN priorities form.

Possible topics include Community Board seats, Interim Global Council, Strategy prioritization follow-up events, Branding, Universal Code of Conduct, Grant strategy, and WMF CEO search. That is a lot of things, which are most important to cover in our upcoming SWAN meeting?

Following the regular call, in SWAN after hours: Wikimedia Meet Jitsi social event with brainstorming for possible Nano Charter ideas, plus any other topics.

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group

edit

(You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)

Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.

As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.

In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:

Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org.

Best regards,

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

SWAN & Desktop Improvements

edit

Hello! I've been wondering if you could add Desktop Improvements to the agenda. I understand that this is not a standard topic for this group. It's a software development project, maybe not strictly related to affiliates' work. But then 1. it's a major project 2. we hope to get it rolled out across all wikis within months 3. our team would like to talk to various parts of the movement in advance, particularly because 4. some affiliates, esp. the emerging ones, have close connections with online communities in their languages.

databases on Wikidata?

edit

@Pharos: I have three projects that envision using Wikidata in ways that are new to me. I asked Ziski Putz about the first two. She suggested I ask you about WALRUS.

The first two involve creating directories of organizations that could be maintained by volunteers on Wikiedata. * One is a Community Organization Directory created by PeaceWorks Kansas City. It hasn't been updated in years but still attracts a lot of traffic.

I want to organize Edit-a-thons to have volunteers input the data. However, before I do that, I need two solve two other problems: (a) How to input the desired data into Wikidata. (b) Write a query to extract what we want.

I have logged over 25,000 edits in Wikimedia Foundation Projects since 2010; over 14,000 of them have been in Wikidata. Most importantly, I need help with how to structure the entries so they will support the queries later. After that's done, I could use help writing the desired queries. However, I can probably solve those problems, but it seems critical to get the foundation right.

My other problem is to copy 30 cases described in Thucydides's Trap Case File into Wikidata, adding elements, e.g., links to relevant pages on Wikipedia to make that data more useful.

Suggestions? Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 22:27, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference

edit

Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.

Registration for the online event is free and is open until Wednesday May 10th at 18:00 UTC, for safety protocol. Late event registration approval and event access denial is at the discretion of organizers.

More information, and registration details, may be found on Meta at QW2023
