GSR

edit

Hi EPIC please note that GSR is intended for wikis with no (or almost no) active sysops. Preferably we want to leave deletion decisions to the local community if there are active sysops. You might want to use User:Hoo man/Scripts/Active sysops which helps you deciding when to request deletion at GSR. Johannnes89 (talk) 20:26, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, will check that one out! I use Twinkle which has a box for requesting at GSR, and I haven't really checked each wiki that carefully, but I'll consider being more careful in the future. EPIC (talk) 20:33, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Clarification regarding your advice

edit

Hello EPIC, I would like some clarification regarding the advice you gave me on User talk:ChrisWx#Edit war with 2 things:

1. I used the IRC channel and used the admin ping noted on m:RFH to report. Does it usually take a while to respond, or was there an error with sending the message? How do I know whether the message sent or not? I have had no response so I am wondering.
2. Can I still revert the LTA, but not as much as I did earlier, or should I start avoiding them as a whole and let others deal with him?

Thanks in advance, ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 00:53, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nvm, got a response on IRC, though the 2nd question stands. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 01:19, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would say, you can revert vandals of course, but if it is clear that every time you revert them, they will revert you back - in that case, it should preferably be left to a sysop. EPIC (talk) 08:00, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I will definitely keep reverting vandalism, but thank you for clarifying, it's good to know the best way to handle those situations, especially on less active wikis than enwiki (where I usually do anti-vandal work as a rollbacker). I will keep this noted. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 17:15, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great! Regarding enwiki, they also have an essay about this (en:WP:NOROLLBACK). EPIC (talk) 17:17, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! That is a helpful essay that clears up some things I was previously wondering about. It's the kind of the approach I'm now trying to take with situations like this. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 17:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

GRN

edit

Hi, please don't process request in language that you don't speak or from project in which you aren't active (or if you don't know the policy), at least until you get some experience (or, if you want to process a request but you have some doubts, just ask!). This is completely wrong. Remember that quality is more important than speed and keeping the queue empty and you shouldn't process a lot of requests - from different projects and languages - so rapidly! Thanks :) Superpes15 (talk) 01:18, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Superpes15: I know - that's why I declined the request, I usually reject users with blocks on other projects if nothing else. I didn't notice however, that this user's talk page access was revoked and that they could not request an unblock. I should have checked a bit more carefully before adding that into my statement, but either way a different global renamer would likely have declined the request due to the block. EPIC (talk) 09:19, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
For clarification, I usually check four things before accepting renaming requests;
  1. is the user blocked on one or more projects, or is the rename sought to conceal or obfuscate bad conduct in a different way?
  2. has the user already been renamed in the past six months?
  3. has the user requested an inappropriate username?
  4. is the username too similar to an existing username, which the system reacts to?
If the answer to all of these are no, I'll usually accept their request. So, I do check before renaming, but yes, it might seem rapid sometimes. EPIC (talk) 09:54, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
"Either way a different global renamer would likely have declined the request due to the block". Absolutely wrong. The block is for "nome utente inappropriato", so they need to be renamed, otherwise they can't be unblocked... As I said, please, avoid performing rename in a language that you don't speak or from a project with particular policy that you don't know! Thanks Superpes15 (talk) 23:57, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks - I'll try to be more careful in the future, but in this case, the talk page access is revoked on itwiki according to CentralAuth, and thus I was unsure whether the rename could be performed as the user could not request an unblock even if they were renamed. Their only contribution on itwiki also seemed to be an advertising userpage. EPIC (talk) 00:04, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, itwiki has a particular policy, it's the only project in which the user talk is automatically blocked (and can't be technically unblocked). Following the practice (and the local policy) the unblock can be performed immediately after the rename (but a local sysop needs to be contacted). Usually, as local sysop on itwiki, I rename and then unblock :) No problem, we all learn by mistake, and if you don't try to perform renames, you can't be wrong, but you will never be experienced :P But remember to just ask when in doubt, there's nothing wrong, we all can learn more and more every day here (and this is one of the reason why Wiki is so beautiful) :) Superpes15 (talk) 00:11, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'll take that into account, thanks! This is my second week as a renamer so I'm still not entirely familiar with everything, but feedback is of course appreciated as it does help me improve. EPIC (talk) 00:16, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Something a little related; I saw the Steward requests/Username changes#שומר הזכויות, And the number of edits of the user who wants to change his name is small (20). I suggest (as they suggested to me ) working according to this this policy proposal, so that there are no unnecessary problems. Thanks, Neriah - 💬 - 22:23, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I also reacted to the fact that it was a little low, but, the user registered over three years ago and the edits they have made are serious. So yes, it was a bit on the border, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt since I don't believe the user, for example, will start vandalising out of nowhere, and we don't really have a clear policy regarding usurpations either. EPIC (talk) 22:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

re xwiki

edit

As you have provoked the LTA by responding, and they are now getting at you xwiki, I have added you to one of the global defensive filters that will give you some pseudo-page protection. I have curated it to match your editing/sysop profile though it may overly protect certain wiki pages in the user nss complex. Please let me know if it is overly protecting and I need to tweak that filter. Typically it would be comms from newer users where you are semi-active on the wiki. You can track global-181 if you wish, and I do keep a light eye on it when a newbie added, typically it has been working well for each user added.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unsure what you meant by provoke in this case, but thanks - I'll let you know if it's too harsh. EPIC (talk) 22:59, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
wikt:provoke: with this LTA anyone joining the game of any attention is a provocation and a cause to get you to play their trolling game. Be it xwiki talk page edits, username mimicry, repeat deletion requests or reversions on a page, etc. they will try it all to get you to react. The one who reacts best to their pissant efforts gets their focus. Best to yawn, be bored with their efforts and not feed the troll.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I knew what provoke means, I was just a little unsure how you meant. But that explains it - and yes, I usually abide by en:Wikipedia:Don't edit-war with vandals or sockpuppets and use RFH or IRC if it's case of an obvious LTA. EPIC (talk) 09:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@1234qwer1234qwer4: Everything changes "as a steward". I don't typically put stewards into that filter, nor even direct them towards that filter as its purpose is to stop the abuse of those who cannot defend themselves in those spaces, and they are typically not active in those spaces. Stewards, with their big pants on, can edit that filter, or make requests on edits to that filter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 19:59, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

AGF

edit

With metawiki, it is useful to AGF in certain cases where people make inexplicable edits, and to put a {{welcome}} message on their talk page. Rollback is useful, though it also can be confronting and challenging to some, so having the welcome message to point to if they escalate is helpful. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth

I have used {{welcome}}, but I usually wait with using it until I have seen that the user has made a few edits and thus likely are good-faith editors. I've had cases on my home wiki where admins have welcomed users before they have really made edits, and later instead prove to be vandalism-only accounts. So, yes, I have used the welcome template, and will likely do so in the future too, but I usually use it with caution. EPIC (talk) 09:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Forced renaming for a dirty name

edit

Hi EPIC, hope you're fine. I just notice your restore here, Thx for that, and found that you are a global renamer, so you may help. The account name is so dirty in Arabic, and he uses that name to insult an active user for his anti-vandalism contributions. Could you help with an informal forced renaming (to any arbitrary name), because I don't want to put his name here (at formal request), Thx --Mohanad Talk 22:58, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mohanad: Hello, thanks for your concern! I'm not really sure about this situation as I do not speak Arabic, but the best thing to do if it's a pure vandalism-only account is to hide the username from the logs, and maybe contact a steward if it's a case of cross-wiki abuse, as they have the ability to lock accounts globally. For example, we have علاء, who is a steward and is native in Arabic - he would likely be the right one to contact in that case. EPIC (talk) 23:10, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thx again, hope علاء could help -Mohanad Talk 23:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just saw that Tegel locked the account. Thus this can likely be marked as resolved. EPIC (talk) 23:31, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello EPIC and Mohanad. I guess you can't see the edits/account now, right? This is a long term abuser. Regarding such accounts, please apply request at SRG with {{LockHide}}. Best --Alaa :)..! 18:30, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nope, the username is now suppressed for me. As mentioned I don't speak Arabic, but I'm certain Mohanad was right about the name being inappropriate. EPIC (talk) 18:40, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thx @Alaa, the name is suppressed now, but still appears at restore revision summary, is there a mass hiding solution, or should hidden one by one? --Mohanad Talk 21:54, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, one by one. In my opinion, it's better to ignore --Alaa :)..! 13:25, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Implementing community consensus in Belarusian Classical Wikipedia

edit

Hello, dear EPIC! How are you? Could you, please, as a steward implement the consensus of the community in Belarusian Classical Wikipedia in terms of: 1) my election as an administrator (be-tarask:Вікіпэдыя:Адміністрацыя#Удзельнік:W), 2) enforcement of the rule on 3-year term limits for admins & bureaucrats (be-tarask:Вікіпэдыя:Галасаваньні/Правіла абраньня адмінаў) based on the results of the vote (6 for & 2 against)? (-1 against as inelligible) Best wishes,—W (talk) 06:56, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, we can't really implement a consensus if there isn't a consensus. The discussions are quite old (5 and 8 months each) so I don't know how well it reflects current community views. I would recommend opening new discussions on this, perhaps? EPIC (talk) 07:44, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the Belarusian community consensus has become wider with the second discussion. And in the 1st vote even the only voter against my adminship called the obstruction of vote results on the side of the bureucrat - a "dictatorship". I would also like to draw attention to the abuse of the same bureaucrat with blocking my account without any corresponding reason, based on the rules of Wikipedia. That abuse happened during the 2nd vote, that was rigged. I guess that makes the next vote problemtic & demands for the implementation of the previous ones. To put things into perspective, that same bureucrat blocked the forum for a year after my further criticism. Would it be advisable to ask for Office actions? Best wishes,--W (talk) 06:36, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, like mentioned I don't know exactly what happened here. But, we can't really act without any consensus, so it would be best trying to gain some kind of new consensus here. EPIC (talk) 06:53, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Admin actions

edit

Good day. Thank you for your contributions as a steward, but I noticed that you are doing administrative stuff that isn't covered by Meta:Meta–steward relationship#Administrative actions on Meta. Such as incorrectly classified G1s, G7s and some erroneous translations. Please either apply for local adminship or leave it for local admins. Thank you. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 03:46, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, have I missed out on something here? I was of course aware of the MSR, but I've gotten the impression that stewards can take local admin actions on Meta in obvious/non-controversial cases (e.g. for vandalism or spam). I have consulted with other stewards about this before, who have given their OK (and for example, see also here.) EPIC (talk) 07:15, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Left a note there as well. G7s and other non-vandalism stuff should only be dealt with by local admins, unless they contain PII, which should be deleted and suppressed under the oversight policy. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 01:34, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Minorax: I would disagree with you here as well - my reading of MSR is that G7 is covered under that rule. I personally don't like your comment, because it creates unnecessary friction with stewards who already have to be conservative with things like these. Leaderboard (talk) 04:37, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually asking EPIC to refrain from doing administrative stuff that is not urgent enough for a non-admin to act. The only 2 points covered are blocking vandals and deleting vandalism. G7 is a speedy criteria for out of scope content, it may or may not be vandalism, if it's vandalism, it can be deleted under G1. I also stated that EPIC is free to request for local adminship so that their actions doesn't go against MSR. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 04:50, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do understand what Minorax is trying to say here, and I will be a bit more restrictive with local admin actions here in the future to take it safe. EPIC (talk) 06:01, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

A global edit filter can help

edit

Hi. I recently noticed that you globally blocked User:Jack99232 for cross-wiki spam (actually "Spam-only account", but the spam is ongoing on multiple wikis including Persian Wikipedia (fawiki) for a month or so). As an admin on fawiki, I created an edit filter to prevent spam only accounts from creating spam pages and block them when they try to create the page. The filter has been active for about 3 days and correctly blocked 6 users. I was thinking that this filter can help stewards to fight the recent spam, at least by creating some useful logs. I don't know if you can see the filter itself (It's private) or its logs on fawiki, let me know if you need local access to edit filters. Best wishes, Jeeputer (talk) 08:12, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Avoided

edit

Hi EPIC, Steward requests/Global/2024-w11#Global lock for Deutsche Bundesregierung is definitely not LTA Avoided. Even without LWCU that's quite obvious because the account was created using a mobile device [1], while Avoided usually doesn't use mobile devices (and Avoided usernames are usually offensive, e.g. nazi/racist/sexist hate speech or some kind of toilet „humour“). Looking at the CU Log [2] neither the provider nor the geolocation resembles anything I've ever seen from Avoided (e.g. [3]).

@Kleshkreikne I don't understand why you linked the dewiki sockpuppet investigation page for Avoided? That's hugely misleading, the account was never checkusered at dewiki (for obvious reasons, every dewiki admin could have easily told you that this is not Avoided). We've had multiple non-dewiki users falsely reporting accounts as Avoided in the past couple of months, please leave it to dewiki admins/patrollers who are familiar with Avoided to report them to SRG (if needed at all).

I suspect this account was created as a joke, perhaps by a student. The account was blocked at dewiki because the username could mislead people thinking its an official account of the en:Cabinet of Germany, but that's usually not a reason for global locking. @1234qwer1234qwer4 fyi. Johannnes89 (talk) 07:28, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

My bad. Well I thought the username implies that this was indeed Avoided. I know Avoided has been known for their inappropriate usernames in German but sorry, I’ve never dealt with a sockpuppet from other than en.wiki. I realized my inexpierence somehow has led to this problem. So okay, unlocking it is completely fine even if I might not be familiar with other language Wikipedias. I’ve never dealt with this guy, nor even ISECHIKA. So let’s deem it as a false positive. kleshkreikne. t 07:34, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, my bad too, I've usually been able to recognize Avoided (the usernames usually makes it quite obvious), but I suppose I just made a mistake. I will leave that account locked simply because it's not really worth unlocking and the username is not appropriate either (it's the name of Germany's federal government), but I'll be more careful. I don't exactly remember this lock since it was a few days ago, but I think looked at the pattern with German usernames and IPv6 addresses. Not sure it really was Avoided now that this came up three days later, but given that the autoblock on dewiki has expired they have the ability to register a new account. Block User IP 114.10.139.104

This user vandalized cross-wiki pages by placing tags carelessly without providing information. I find this user very annoying. Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 12:04, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I don't see any particularly further abuse? They made three edits cross-wiki some hours ago where they tagged pages for speedy deletion, but I can't see that they made any more edits after that, so I'm a little hesitant about placing a global block. Also, preferrably keep global block requests to SRG, thanks :) EPIC (talk) 12:11, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
EPIC, I suspect this anonymous user is using the same IP. Make edits by placing random tags personally on the Tommy Jonathan Sinaga Wiki page.

This doesn't seem like the same user to me? One tagged the page for speedy deletion, one removed the tag. EPIC (talk) 18:22, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid an anonymous user made a careless edit. How can such an anonymous IP address come from Indonesia (edit style) and edit the page using the same mobile device? The perpetrator is the same person using a different IP address. It seems like he has a personal grudge against the page he edited. Sorry in advance, I was just making sure. :) ~~~ Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 18:50, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations, EPIC! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Adminstrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Meta:Admin handbook to be useful. Please also check or add your entry to the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe to the metawiki-admins private mailing list (subscription instructions on that page). Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. --M/ (talk) 19:09, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. I'm mostly going to refer to Johannnes89's comment on SRG. I'm also not too sure these pages are notable, but either way any speedy deletion requests should be handled by local administrators. EPIC (talk) 19:57, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the case of Steward_requests/Permissions#Mtodo@jawiktionary, the Japanese term "対象" as in ja:wikt:Wiktionary:管理者#信任投票 (de-sysop policy) means "target person" (in this case User:Mtodo), rather than "the person concerned" (the machine translation you showed is wrong). Hi, There!

edit

EPIC, View this user's contributions. Seems like a personal attack on an article. There is no local administration on the Toba Batak Wikipedia, so IP Vandalism users carelessly edit articles without checking the appropriate reference sources. Can you handle IP Vandalism? This IP user edits the page carelessly. I suspect he deliberately edited the page to lower the quality. then he put a SPAM tag.

Check out the biography of Tommy Jonathan Sinaga (Toba Batak Figure) covered by RCTI Television

Take a look at the contribution style of the vandalism users below, is it worth it?

If you pay attention to his contribution, the edit is only on 1 page. very clear personal attack.. Regards! Clara Simamora (talk) 19:06, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

As I already mentioned further above, I will refer to Johannnes89's comment on SRG. I'm not sure either whether the pages are actually notable, but adding a speedy deletion to a page is not an attack and either way you should let the speedy deletion requests be handled by local administrators (or global sysops if there are none). IP range global block

edit

Hi, is it appropriate to the IP address range 1.128.16.0/20 xwiki-contribsSTIP infoWHOISrobtexgblockglistabuselogbullseye to be globally blocked? It's being used by the Australian childish vandal to create accounts on wikis for vandalism. He has been repeatedly making accounts on Wikidata and Wikivoyage so I think this should warrant a global block. But, I feel like some good-faith editors will panic upon seeing that their IP has been blocked across all wikis. TheWikiCyclone (talk) 06:51, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not sure it's the best solution given that it's a big range which will cause collateral damage if blocked, and it's not the only range ACV uses. If needed, abuse filters would probably be a better solution (which there already are some). EPIC (talk) 06:54, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah there are filters on Wikidata that automatically block for LTA bad replacements, but recently he has been mass removing links to articles on there and there is unfortunately no filter for that. So, the admins have to deal with that themselves. TheWikiCyclone (talk) 07:01, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

934C Block - don't understand the reason

edit

2806:101e:a:b0f9:549b:a2e:35e0:8ce8 and the block ID is #579755. Greetings - I got a message that I have been blocked by EPIC as per this message, "Your account or IP address has been blocked. 2806:101E:A:0:0:0:0:0/48?, you have been blocked by Johannnes89". The reason given by EPIC: "The block was made by ?EPIC? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:EPIC). The reason given is Long-term abuse."

Starting in 2009 I made some contributions to Wikipedia for a few years. For the last several years I have not done anything until the end of March when I noticed an error for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helena_Bocho%C5%99%C3%A1kov%C3%A1-Dittrichov%C3%A1

10 of the 15 novels were listed as Wordless Novels whereas only 5 were wordless. I adjusted the list so that the ten were listed under "Other Novels/Cycles". Given that this is the first contribution/change I have made in years, I am unclear as to the basis of "long term abuse". None of my earlier contributions have been challenged. BTW I spend half the year in Mexico (where I am right now), and the other half in Canada - I am not sure if this has anything to do with the matter.

Please explain. Regards, Ken 934C (talk) 23:57, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@934C: The IP range was blocked for abuse, and might not have been directed against you. I would suggest sending an email to stewards wikimedia.org with information, and then we can take a look at it. EPIC (talk) 05:07, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Problems on tt.wikipedia

edit

Hello! Today I marked cross-wiki spam from Papa2004 on tt.wikipedia.org, but was blocked by the local administrator. My edits. What should I do? Thanks, regards. Кронас (talk) 15:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - different wikis have different criteria for what can be speedy deleted and I think that what one wiki considers to be falling under the speedy deletion criteria might not fall under the same criteria for another wiki. Spam or not, the speedy deletion request was declined by the local admin, and in that scenario it's best to just leave it like that instead. EPIC (talk) 15:40, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand, but the question is about removing the global cross-wiki advertising. All other wikis have already deleted spam (example), but this wiki pointedly refuses to take any action. They have accumulated more than 10 spam articles from one abuser (globally locked). Also, blocking for one useful edit (setting a template with a deletion request) is obvious abuse. The administrator does not want to engage in dialogue or answer my questions. Кронас (talk) 15:49, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Кронас there is no universal rule that projects have to delete articles created by LTA like Papa2004. My homewiki dewiki (one of the largest projects) doesn't have a rule like en:WP:G5 and frequently decides to keep such articles, unless they are of such bad quality that they can't be fixed by our community (or if the article subject is simply not notable). While I would personally like my homewiki to adopt a rule like en:WP:G5, there is no community consensus for doing that – and just like dewiki other projects (like ttwiki apparently) sometimes decide to keep those articles which we have to accept, even if we do not like it.
Regarding your block: A ttwiki admin removed your deletion tag [4] and instead of discussing their decision with them you reverted them [5]. They therefore blocked you for repeatedly inserting deletion templates without adhering to local policy, something which you could have been prevented by discussing with them first before eventually reintroducing the deletion request. Personally I don't think a block was necessary and is quite a hard decision, I'm sure you would have stopped when given a proper warning, but given that the block is only for one week and just for the article namespace I wouldn't say it's „abuse“.
I would just ignore what Papa2004 is doing at ttwiki if they decide not to delete the spam articles. There are plenty of other projects who are grateful if you help them fighting spam/vandalism. And in one week this block is gone as well. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:15, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for such a detailed comment! After the first edit, I wrote to the administrator, trying to enter into a discussion with him - see tt:Kullanuchy_bәkhәse:Frhdkazan#Tendence (in Russian, you can translate via Google). But he chose to remain silent on 2 of my questions.
At the same time, on Wikipedia itself there is an increased activity of the spammer Papa2004, who actively rollback the placement of any templates on articles and also writes offensive comments addressed to me - examples in the edit histories [6] [7]
Administrator of this wiki make rules about significance at their own discretion. Other users also submit advertising articles for deletion, but administrator do not respond to their requests in any way - examples [8] [9] [10]. Is real big problem. Is it possible that the admin can act together with the offender?
I understand about the insignificance of that blocking, but why is it worth leaving it just like that? The spammer is laughing at us. Кронас (talk) 16:32, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
+1 to what Johannes said here above as well. I also think that a block was too harsh and I might not agree with their decision, but like it was already mentioned here, all wikis do not have the same criteria for speedy deletions. If a local administrator declines a request for speedy deletion it is better to instead just leave it as it is and let their decision be. EPIC (talk) 16:35, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the #wikimedia-checkuser channel is invite-only, but as that channel is intended for private discussions between CUs, and not for CU requests, only those with CheckUser access can get invited. EPIC (talk) 16:17, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ahh, okay. I'll ask that en.wn update their info. Do you know of a channel that is available for such requests? Was it open in the past and changed maybe? Michael.C.Wright (talk) 18:39, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Disregard. I misread the local policy at en.wn. Michael.C.Wright (talk) 19:01, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
You could perhaps try one of Wikinews' IRC channels (see IRC/Channels, there are many Wikinews related channels in the list so at least one of them should be fitting). But, we generally do not perform checks on wikis with local CUs, so to begin with, leave a notice on the CheckUsers' talk pages (and perhaps poke them through email at the same time). Please also note that it can't be publicly declared whether an IP has been used by an account, and you need to provide at least one other account to check with, otherwise it will be "fishing". Hi EPIC. I thought I'd let you know that I've disabled this global block, locally on enwiki, due to the collateral (as seen in the global block log). It's a longstanding situation and I think the /96 is usually the relevant part. Let me know if there's an issue. Might want to keep an eye out for global collateral problems. -- zzuuzz (talk) 12:17, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Zzuuzz, no problem. If I remember correctly I blocked it when I was taking care of some LTA accounts, but if the block would cause collateral damage, I would be happy to set it to anononly as well :) EPIC (talk) 12:30, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think you'll probably want anon-only at most, though anon editing is not generally a problem (we also have it anonblocked). Also consider /96 subranges at Linode. Over at en:WP:SIP it says there's only one IP in the range used by Wikiedu, but I haven't checked how accurate that is. I don't have any idea about global activity, but on enwiki Wikiedu puts hundreds of accounts through their Linode range in an average week. I think they're all logged in, but I think there's also a lot of account creation (I'd have to double check). I should mention when I say this that I happen to be familiar with the LTA that I think you're talking about (if so, they have a cuwiki page). It's one of those things we've learned to deal with, and in the grand scheme of things isn't overwhelming.. That's what I know, so I leave it up to you. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:14, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Well, I was not aware of the collateral when I blocked the range, but I'm also not the most experienced when it comes to Linode or rangeblocks of IPv6 in general (and usually haven't blocked IPv6 ranges smaller than /64). I think you are thinking about the same LTA (to be precise it was this one: revid link), but I've also not approached them too much and was not aware of the CU wiki page. I'll take a look at it, and also going ahead and setting the gblock to anononly in case of any collateral damage. EPIC (talk) 13:39, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

SRG abuse filter

edit

Hi, the abuse filter prevents me from writing "GRP" on SRG and says to use IRC instead. Instead I was using the person's actual name. Is this really necessary? You are responding to these reports almost immediately, so could this abuse filter be removed? Kk.urban (talk) 18:02, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, it was not me who created that filter in the first place, but if I'm not mistaken, the reason for the filter in the first place is because the LTA in question IP hops and usually doesn't stay on the same IP for long before moving on to the next. Now, I'm at SRG quite frequently and can usually quickly handle them anyway if they are recent, but if we imagine the scenario that there would be no steward available to assist at SRG, it would instead leave the stewards with a big batch of reports for stale IPs for them to handle. That is what we want to avoid, and that is why we primarily want GRP reports to be submitted to IRC instead.
So, that is the reason why the filter exists, if I'm not mistaken. Like I mentioned, I didn't create the filter, and if you want to discuss removing it, I suggest taking that with the creator of that filter, AmandaNP. However, I'm not too sure Amanda would be very willing to remove it either, given that she created it for a reason. EPIC (talk) 18:10, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Kk.urban: While EPIC is responding to them immediately - this is the work of an overactive steward at the start, that usually calms after a few months. It's not usually a sustainable level. The problem is, even within 10-20 minutes, the IPs are abandoned, and a new one is obtained. People have told me "oh he will come back on it", which I haven't seen in at least 6 months of looking. Given these are P2P proxies, that means that anyone else on that IP will be affected by colleterial for the block period, while we actually aren't blocking GRP because he moves on after a few minutes to a new IP. In my opinion, we are still currently overblocking GRP, and we are feeding the trolls in doing it. So evading the filter makes no sense to me and is frustrating to see.
That said, EPIC is correct about the number of reports that would sit on SRG. Should EPIC ever have a medical situation, life change, be on vacation or be occupied for any period of time, we'd be foobarred by this reporting. Last year, we were over the template transclusion limit on the page it was that bad. That is why one of my points in the election was steward sustainability. So no, it's not good that these are reported to SRG for those reasons. -- Amanda (she/her) 23:13, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AmandaNP I see your point somewhat. However, are you saying that it's actually bad to block this user's IPs? Because if it's not done immediately, it's not done at all. I have seen dozens of reverts from a single IP address from GRP. Kk.urban (talk) 01:40, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
If he's going to insanity (10+ reverts required in 10 minutes or so) then I can definitely see the point in blocking - though for a maximum of 3 hours. If it's 3 edits and it's all in 10 minutes, yes, it does more potential harm than good. I am not saying you are reporting all the ones with few edits, thats just the majority i've personally seen at SRG. I'm happy for us to handle the mass editing after we get to that point - just not preempt it. -- Amanda (she/her) 01:47, 5 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

hello sir sorry for bothering you, can you help check a page on wikilokal which is showing a strange notification which is thought to be a hacking action [11] I've tried to contact the interface administrator but he's probably busy. I captured the picture here [12] 🍃Zulf🍃talk 09:31, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm seeing the notice on the mobile site too, however, I have no idea what it is. EPIC (talk) 09:35, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is this an Android-only thing? I'm not getting it on my end. --SHB2000 (tc) 09:41, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, I use iOS and saw the notice when I opened the idwiki page linked above and switched to mobile view in Safari, but I didn't see it again. EPIC (talk) 09:43, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Strange – normally, if I saw that, my mind defaults to "remnants of a vandal", but I can't see that being the case here. --SHB2000 (tc) 09:46, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC Those are insulting sentences and words, of course they shouldn't be on the wiki. what's the way out? 🍃Zulf🍃talk 11:50, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
It seems to have to do with this page (where the same notice is showing), so I think it just might be something transcluding it on the "Pengurus" page. EPIC (talk) 12:00, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000 try on this page [13] 🍃Zulf🍃talk 11:48, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't see that message on that page. --SHB2000 (tc) 12:00, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000 there is a delay of a few seconds/minutes, try waiting 🍃Zulf🍃talk 12:03, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@RamzyM (WMF),Bennylin Mohon maaf sebelumnya dan mohon izin untuk memanggil disini untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan. ini mengenai idwiki ada notif yang tidak pantas dan saya tidak tau sumbernya. Terima kasih 🍃Zulf🍃talk 12:07, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Once again, it rather seems to have to do with a notice on this page. It seems to have been transcluded for some reason, but it's likely caused by that. EPIC (talk) 12:09, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC Oh yes, same, I will try to contact the person concerned. Thank 🍃Zulf🍃talk 12:12, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Spambots

edit

Hi, as you know, the usernames of spambots usually follow a certain pattern. Is it okay to report to SRG just because of the usernames. For example, I am almost sure that Special:CentralAuth/Simonmohing0072458 is a spambot because of the username alone. Seawolf35 (talk) 18:29, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

And thanks for all the quick responses! Seawolf35 (talk) 18:30, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the best thing to do is that if unsure, it's best to check the filter log and/or spam blacklist log beforehand, to see if any there have been any spambot-like activities from the account. I'm not sure that's a spambot - they usually have the first letter of the last name in uppercase, and there is nothing in the logs from that account. The most typical spambot pattern is registering at small wikis with "NameLastname" (and maybe a number after that too) as the username pattern, and then trying to create the classic NTSAMR user page (which, if not published, is logged in the filter log or spam blacklist log). And if it's still unsure, LWCU can be of help, but given that the account doesn't really look like the usual spambot pattern I'm not sure about locking it. EPIC (talk) 18:37, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Seawolf35 (talk) 19:08, 7 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Complicated thing

edit

I ask for opinions and help regarding this problem. So I was trusted to be one of the management selection committee at IDwiki [14]. It was going well until there was a fairly complicated problem. my colleagues resigned [15] this was quite complicated where the committee only had 3 people left and the only one who was quite active was me. an examiner is also less active and an administrator is also in the running to become an examiner. [16] Meanwhile, the election must continue because it has been agreed on the schedule, etc. previously at (warungkopi). I am quite overwhelmed and limited regarding this where there are limitations such as needing page protection and announcing info on protected pages. so if possible I ask for administrator rights, temporarily until the event is over, because there are many tasks that I need to do. Of course I know the policy regarding this tool. I don't want this event to be canceled because this includes the election of new administrators and checkuser too. I don't want to disappoint many people. so what do you think? 🍃Zulf🍃talk 07:16, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, if I understand you correctly, you want to request temporary administrator rights during the elections in idwiki? If so, idwiki has local bureaucrats, so I would recommend asking one of them and see if they can grant you. EPIC (talk) 07:23, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPICLocal amendments should not be possible yet, and there are no regulations regarding this matter. I don't mean to badmouth the performance of bureaucrats because that's a personal matter. where permission to grant rights (Pending Changes reviewer) requires quite a long time. Please understand the shortcomings of local wikis. 🍃Zulf🍃talk 07:45, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
please help me in this urgent time. 🍃Zulf🍃talk 07:46, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, once again, since idwiki has local bureaucrats, they are the users responsible for granting adminship there. So, please contact them since there isn't much stewards can do in this case. EPIC (talk) 07:48, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC usually bureaucrats rarely respond to sir, I believe you can help. because my reasons are grounded and can be justified I think until July 15 2024 is enough.
I looked at SRP This page is used to request that Administrators grant or revoke the access rights of Administrators, Bureaucrats, user reviewers, and supervisors on Wikimedia projects that do not have a local access rights request procedure. 🍃Zulf🍃talk 08:14, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we are responsible for granting permissions on Wikimedia projects that do not have a local access rights request procedure. Idwiki does not fall under that category because they have local bureaucrats, in other words, a local procedure for granting rights. I will say this one more time - please contact them, given that most of them have edited in the last few weeks (and one of them was even active as recently as today), and that this isn't exactly uncontroversial, given that there is no local election. EPIC (talk) 08:32, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC okay fine i will find a way out. Thank you for your time. sorry i like to bother you. 🍃Zulf🍃talk 12:09, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem, but I hope you are able to resolve it in the end. EPIC (talk) 12:11, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

can you please tell me where did my request go? Thanks. Zoglophie (talk) 11:48, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I moved it to Steward requests/Global permissions, as you had posted your request at Steward requests/Global, which is meant for requesting global blocks and global locks, while your request seemed to regard requesting a global IP block exemption. EPIC (talk) 11:51, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your work as a Steward
Hello, EPIC. I'm sad to see you submit your resignation from Steward and all rights to another project. Actually being a steward isn't easy. It's difficult to get. Including collecting work from various projects and more, but I'm glad you were a steward. I know you have worked hard since you were elected. Thanks for considering the steward requests from me and from others. I understand your reasoning and hope you get through it. And we always welcome your return. Thanks you very much. --Lookruk 💬 (Talk) 02:36, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the apprecation, and I'm happy the work I've done over the past few months has been of use. It was of course not easy, but, I have done a lot and gotten to know a bunch of good people, which I am thankful for. EPIC (talk) 02:49, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Solving script

edit

Hi. I would like to offer you my script for closing reports instead of SRG.js. It has more features, it links to a section in the summary (which makes it easier, for example, for those looking in watchlist or RC) and it works the same as SRG.js but on several pages. You can also test it in the sandbox by configuring it for yourself as given to see if you want to use it. I'll be happy to help if you need anything.   The Steward's Barnstar
Thank you for all the incredible steward work, I have been highly impressed with the way that you quickly handle reports on SRG and have removed the backlog that was previously present for multiple months. While I'm glad to see that you've chosen to stick around as a steward, if there ever is a time where real-life issues get so prevalent that they feel the need to make you have to step back for a while, then, as M7 put it, I will second any decision that you make, as what's best for you is what matters the most. All the best, ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 20:45, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your appreciation, and I am glad that my work is still valued. I do indeed feel quite a bit better than I did a few days ago, but I will take a break when I feel like I need it (which is yet to see when that happens, but I hope to be able to stay active for some time). But, once again, thanks a lot :D EPIC (talk) 20:53, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
You're very welcome, and of course it's still valued, you do a wonderful job with quickly handling requests, while also taking the sufficient time to evaluate more complicated requests. Of course, absolutely take a break when you feel like you need to, take care of yourself first. All-in-all though, you simply are, as the name suggests, an EPIC steward.   ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 21:13, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Persian wikivoyage

edit

hello. The situation in persian wikivoyage is really bad. The project's only admin (User:AFlorence) hasn't been active in project since 2021. Because of that no new access like rollback, autopatrol, patroller, etc has given to new members. In addition there are dozens of pages that nominates for speedy deletion and somebody should delete them. AmSiDeAth (talk) 17:47, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, if the main problem is that there is a large amount of pages needing speedy deletion, you could consider leaving a request at SRM or applying for adminship on the project. EPIC (talk) 17:59, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, yes I can edit now. Is there any way to prevent this happening again? It seems to happen periodically. Mhaining89 (talk) 00:09, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I don't think there is much more to do about it now, the block is now changed and no further action is needed. If it becomes more of a problem in the future you can consider applying for a global IP block exempt or a local IP block exempt at Wikidata. EPIC (talk) 01:37, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Removal of Permissions

edit

I've contacted you before. We have a user at English WN (TUFKAAP) -- voted to have his sysop/admin. privs removed -- I am an Admin and Bureaucrat there. Can you take that action for us, please? Bddpaux (talk) 15:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: Hi, local bureaucrats on the English Wikinews are able to remove sysop rights. Have you tried contacting one of them first? EPIC (talk) 15:50, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Did you realise that @Bddpaux: is a bureaucrat himself - so he can remove it yourself via wikinews:Special:UserRights. Leaderboard (talk) 17:28, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: Bddpaux is actually not a bureaucrat at enwikinews anymore - they resigned that role in October last year [17]. That is why I directed them to one of the other three bureaucrats. EPIC (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh apologies; he said above that he was. Leaderboard (talk) 18:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Actually: You're right! I most certainly did! Brain cramp! How can I get Bureaucrat back?--Bddpaux (talk) 19:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: Hi, I do not know if this applies to the English Wikinews, but some wikis have a system where if you resigned your user rights uncontroversially and in good standing, you can request your rights back. If this is not the case at enwikinews, what you will have to do is submit a new candidacy for bureaucratship. EPIC (talk) 20:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Right. Yes. Problem is: Our 3 'crats are pretty much in the wind at present. That is the sticky wicket. I am trying to put some kind of infrastructure back together again, if possible. I have been voted to become a CU (as we are hurting for CU's)... but I think I should get 'crat back and then worry about CU. See? And, for the record: there was no controversy -- I just retired, and now am trying to UNretire. So: Can you turn on a switch or two?--Bddpaux (talk) 22:44, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: Well, I also noted their inactivity, but to begin with, you should try contacting them. For example, Gryllida edited globally a little over a month ago, so that might be a hope. In the case a new bureaucrat candidacy will still be required, we would also leave that to local bureaucrats first, but it can be processed by us in the case that the local bureaucrats do not respond, as long as it meets the general voting criteria. So, yes, try to reach the crats first (and perhaps also send an email notification about it to one of them, which a lot of the time does give a quicker response time even if they are less active). EPIC (talk) 01:02, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Check User at English WN

edit

So: Can you take action on my CU nomination, please? Hopefully, my 'Crat nomination will move quickly.--Bddpaux (talk) 21:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! Well, as per the global CheckUser policy, the vote will need to reach at least 25 votes for us to be able to action on it (which can be a bit difficult, but, sadly, it is the policy). EPIC (talk) 21:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
For the love of Holy God -- there aren't 25 people within 700 miles of English WN on a yearly basis who would even comprehend voting! Again: Our are pretty much COMPLETELY in the wind. There has to be some kind of work around. 25 is ABSURD for a project our size.--Bddpaux (talk) 15:02, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The policy has a high requirement since it's a sensitive right (and the same requirement is mentioned in the local policy for appointing CUs), but I too agree that 25 votes can be somewhat too high (which is why multiple wikis have had trouble being able to appoint local CUs :/). However, the two CU candidates in 2021 did manage to get 25 votes, so it's not completely hopeless either, and it might be easier now that it is in the sitenotice (and advertised at the water cooler too, I assume). Reasons

edit

So, you are comfortably aware of the kerfuffle at English Wikinews. My words have absolutely been an incendiary component within that whole mess, no doubt. I am passionate about Citizen journalism and have given many years to that project. I've done some notable soul searching over the past 18 hours or so. This week, I've been accused of all manner on non-sensical stuff (novel news to me), including various forms of weirdness about some of my edit summaries (I write the most boring edit summaries to be found anywhere, when I actually write them); it is a sizable bunch of oddness. Since about December 1st, the vandalism at that project has been an exhausting tsunami (you may've worked some magic recently to help out with that, not sure) and have sought to encourage and maybe develop some reporters/Reviewers when/if/where I could. This has impacted my mood as far as interacting with others, and I suspect maybe even my blood pressure: that is utter madness for a volunteer wiki. I acted a bit too quickly on an RfP -- I did. Things could've been worked on/tweaked, but my action was utterly overruled. It takes hardly a light wind to run people away from that project, and I got a little too excited that someone wanted to hang out for longer that 2 hours.
A little time and a little distance can often be good medicine. I talk about how much I value Citizen journalism. My behavior needs to show that, or else I'm just a cheap hypocrite. There are some people there who show up, pot stir a wee bit, behave in an oppositional manner and then aren't seen again for 3 weeks. All these things lumped together, lead me to this: You guys huddle up(heck, you're a Steward -- you are essentially Darth Vader around here), and do whatever it is you deem appropriate. My current RfP's? Whatevs. Do as thou wilt. User George Ho has literally launched a counter-campaign on those -- I mean burning the midnight oil to work against me(I'm telling you: that dude breaks more than he fixes). I'm not retiring. I'm not quitting. I'm not vanishing. But: I am entering a period of self-exile. To that end:
*Between this moment, and the end of December, I may offer about 40 key strokes over there (aggregate) -- but no more. I need some distance to figure out where I am and where that project will land.
*During that time, as an Administrator, I might zap a few 'speedy delete' articles, but no other actions whatsoever. For 52 weeks from today, I will not push a single button (comments or otherwise) for one single RfP -- not a single one -- those will be a no-fly zone for me.
*For the remainder of this year, I will not offer a single word (vote, comment or otherwise) about policies, or attempt to bring in old users or anything like that; over here OR over there. I received some bizarre and strange criticisms in that department, let me tell you.
My mentoring as a new Administrator (quite some time back) spanned about 10 seconds. Generally, my interest in 'Crat or CU is just simply because they are so darned difficult to find over there -- nothing more. During my exile, people there can call me a vegetarian pirate and I will not respond. That is unusual for me. Generally I do NOT lie down when people disparage my words or actions -- and 2 users there have sprained their ankles this week to do that very thing: and I didn't leave it untouched. -- but I will for the rest of this year.
If you want to comment here -- please do so! I won't say anything ugly to you -- I won't. Heck, you're probably one of the most innocent parties involved in this! Thanks for your time. I'll see you down the road.--Bddpaux (talk) 15:28, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again - I did note what happened but I don't know this whole story. That is why I did not change my vote, but rather that I needed more time to think about it. EPIC (talk) 15:47, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is critical that I dont paint myself as an angel —- I wasn’t. But this has proven to me that, at WMF projects, one can be “mean and bad”, without being “wrong”. User George Ho is, with surgical precision, engaged in a counter campaign against my RfP’s. He tosses words like ‘civility’ around, while strolling about with 2 gallons of gasoline and a blowtorch. He most probably isn’t violating policy per se, but he has destruction in his eyes, I promise. I mean: I would bet he is the kind of guy who brings a handful of darts to a hanging. I see what defense lawyers mean when they use the term, “charge stacking”. It is largely wicked when one considers how little he HAS EVER DONE to push a broom or a mop around that project. The egalatarianism at WMF projects doubles as poison. It is demoralizing at a basic level.—Bddpaux (talk) 21:38, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

You locked global the User:AdmiralDonSchneider with the notice "Cross-wiki abuse: CommanderInDubio". Do you have please any concrete facts? In the German CU have been made some wrong conclusions, they write there "probably". "Probably" is no reason to ban or lock. By the way the user has no edits. As a bureaucrat on sourceswiki and formerly admin in some more projects I know the matter a bit. Cheers. Answer pls here or at sourceswiki. -jkb- 20:30, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi -jkb-, I locked AdmiralDonSchneider and DerWizzard after CommanderInDubio was locked, based on the CU results at dewiki which had indicated that both accounts were likely operated by CID. I had not seen any concerns about the results possibly being incorrect when I had locked, but in the case scenario they are not related I wouldn't have any problems with unlocking them. EPIC (talk) 20:48, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are no „wrong conclusions“ and they didn't write „probably“. They are certain (as certain as CU can be) that AdmiralDonSchneider and DerWizzard are related to each other. And they say it's "very likely" (not just „probable“) these accounts are sockpuppets of CID, based on the technical evidence, the abusive mails (which have been turned over to stewards as well) and the editing behaviour of DerWizzard, all of which leads to no other likely explanation rather than them being sockpuppets of CID. There is extensive documentation regarding the technical evidence on CU wiki, which dewiki CU and stewards have looked at.
And regarding AdmiralDonSchneider having no edits: The account was involved in an abusive mail + crosswiki sock puppetry and has already been blocked at dewiki -> more than enough reason for global locking. Johannnes89 (talk) 21:11, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi -jkb-, I'm a bit confused as to why you're standing up for CID here after he put you on CC in his harassing mails and you actually know exactly why the lock is appropriate here. --Icodense (talk) 22:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey EPIC--this guy showed up again, but through the French wiki: User:IEditArticlesAboutMusic. I can't tell if your global block of that range was a hardblock--maybe they used a different IP? There was one regular IP in the list I saw, so maybe they do get out of the house sometimes. Would you mind having a look again? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:37, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Never mind--I see you already blocked a range. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:46, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem. It was a softblock, yes (since it was a big range), but it expired today. Reblocked it and locked another sock I just found. EPIC (talk) 16:51, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don’t really know why my IP adress was blocked

edit

Hello I am writing this because recently, when I wanted to see if I can edit articles, I noticed that I am globally IP blocked to 2025 for something called “Long-term abuse” (don’t really know what this means). Maybe I actually did something wrong, I don’t say I’m holy but the notification didn’t show me what did I write or what page did I edit that I’ve got banned. I just don’t know for what actual reason I am blocked. I just want to know that’s it. I really hope that You will reply to my question, thanks for taking time and reading this! Nope - if your account is locked you simply have to appeal by emailing us at stewards-appeals wikimedia org. Using another account to circumvent the lock is lock evasion. EPIC (talk) 14:49, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Global lock for Assifbus

I would generally say that TwinkleGlobal is the best to use for reporting to SRG, although regarding the specific user you are mentioning, given what has already been said on the last SRG requests for the same user I would recommend opening a request for a global ban instead. Potential Sock of Jefferyhhh

Hello EPIC,

Local user Jefferyqqq has recently submitted an unblock request. Some users have pointed out that their username is very similar to Jefferyhhh and Jefferymmm, both of which you have locked. Please perform a check if possible to determine the relationship between Jefferyhhh and the two users listed prior. As a local SPI clerk and admin, I recognize that this request is a bit informal, but I still think it deserves to be looked after.  22:13, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

EPIC (talk) 20:40, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Så är det givetvis. Tack. Jag har mailat. Estrellato (talk) 20:55, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Request for Unblock surahalmulk

edit

Dear Wikipedia administrator EPIC,

I am writing to request the unblocking of my account "surahalmulk," which was blocked for "cross-wiki spam," and also my website link, "surahalmulk.net." I assure you that any actions interpreted as spam were unintentional, and I am committed to adhering to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I value my ability to contribute to Wikipedia and understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of the project. If there were specific edits or actions that led to this block, I would appreciate more information so that I can address these issues directly and avoid similar mistakes in the future. I am willing to take any necessary steps to demonstrate my commitment to constructive editing, including: Reviewing and following Wikipedia's policies on cross-wiki editing Limiting my edits to areas where I have specific knowledge or expertise Engaging in discussion on talk pages before making significant changes Participating in any required training or mentorship programs I assure you that, if unblocked, I will be more careful in my editing practices and will strive to make valuable contributions to the encyclopedia. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to resume editing and collaborating with the Wikipedia community.

Here is the reason, in my opinion: When I created my first page on the Wikipedia page, "Surah Al-Mulk," me and my other partner added content and a link to the original website, surahalmulk.net. Everything was OK. But after one month, a user named Malikhammad—I don't know who this is. This guy massaged me on my talk page and said, Give me your account; I will paste your link on every wiki page related to Surah Mulk. Then I said, "Okay, it can help other users read in-depth content who are interested. But I don't know that this guy just passed a link to every wiki without any content or information. Then, I said to this malikhammad, Give me my account. They said no; I will give you your account when you give me money. Then I created another account. After creating an account, I see that the user is blocked, as is my website link. Then, I take time to think about what to ask the wiki admin. That's the truth about why an account is banned. My request is to unblock my account and link. If you think that the account is not able to unblock then please unblock the link. Once Again Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, surahalmulk Hammadbhipro1 (talk) 07:26, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - happy to hear that you don't plan on repeating what led to your account being locked, but unfortunately, this is not the way to appeal. If you want to appeal your lock, please email us through stewards-appeals wikimedia org with an appeal and it will be handled in a timely manner. Creating a new account after your first one was locked is lock evasion, which is equally lockable, so please don't do so - I will therefore also lock this account, at least until your main account is unlocked. EPIC (talk) 07:58, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have send a 50 + email but no one replay me. every day i write a new appeal and send, but no one help me, i have write a request to so many admin, but no one helping me. 154.80.105.14 03:43, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Your request will be handled once there is time. We get a lot of lock appeals, thus why it can take time. EPIC (talk) 06:32, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possibly hoax across project involving a "Joseph Williams"

edit

Hi EPIC! I'm an editor primarily working on English Wikipedia, and I'm unfamiliar with the procedures for handling suspected hoaxes across multiple Wikimedia projects. I apologize if this isn't the most appropriate venue to raise this concern.

There appears to be a coordinated effort to create entries (likely a hoax or possibly just a non-notable person) about a "Joseph Williams" across various Wikimedia projects, including English Wikipedia. Recently, I reverted an article hijack attempt on the English Wikipedia for "Joseph Williams (music publisher)" (revision history: [18]), which appears to be part of this attack. The attempt originated from a new user ("Aka4627"), who changed a redirect into an article and used a false edit summary.

Further investigation reveals a corresponding Wikidata item (Q126122910) containing the same (likely fabricated) information. I noticed many of the edits on Wikidata pages seem to originate from group users that you globally blocked (potentially sock puppets) who only edit these related pages. The Wikidata revision history shows user "Removevandasalim" for most of the recent edits perpetuating the hoax and has not yet been locked.

According to the Wikidata item, similar hoax articles appear to exist on other language Wikipedias.

I'm bringing this to your attention because it seems you've previously globally locked some of the users involved in this hoax attempt. Thanks! Wikipedialuva (talk) 05:34, 18 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Odd account creations

edit

I am trying to understand the odd creation of my account at the Kiswahali Wikipedia as Ldm1954 on July 23rd. I am on the English wiki as Ldm1954 and have a reasonable number of edits so I am not at newbie, but do not know the inner workings. A beaurocrat on the Kiswahili wiki MuddybLonga has given me admin right for 24 hours so I can look. I see that you recently did a block for abuse that might be similar, or not. At the moment all I can see is a large number of user creations similar to here which just say "created by machine" or "was created". In almost all cases these new accounts have zero edits, so many to most are spurious. Maybe you have more expertise to investigate; I will have a bit more of a look later. Ldm1954 (talk) 13:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Excuses but I don't really understand your question; what are you trying to ask? EPIC (talk) 13:46, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can you look at the creation list I indicated "here" above and see who created those accounts. For at least one you did a global block recently. The question is why were they (mine is only one of 20 or more) created without permission. Ldm1954 (talk) 23:42, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Copy pate of content from above:You did a block for abuse that might be similar, or not. At the moment all I can see is a large number of user creations similar to here. Ldm1954 (talk) 23:44, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ah, no, the lock in question was for an LTA who generally has a habit of registering at a lot of projects. They are likely unrelated to the other user creations at swwiki. EPIC (talk) 00:50, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That account was one of those created at swwiki "by machine", the same as my account. I think there was more than one which was blocked/locked.
I dont know how to find out who/what created the accounts. It was at a minimum an unwarranted software glitch, at a max deliberate vandalism, sockpuppet or something. Ldm1954 (talk) 01:22, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Addendum. What has happened is that accounts/pages from Wikipedia have been copied to the swwiki, see sw:Mtumiaji:Muhammed amine benloulou, and similar on the list.
"What you see on this page was copied from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Muhammed_amine_benloulou"
Either someone released a bit on wikimedia to do this or on swwiki. Ldm1954 (talk) 08:14, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
What that means is that there is no local userpage, and therefore it shows the global userpage instead (the Meta userpage) if there is one. EPIC (talk) 08:24, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Spambots by username?

edit

Hi, EPIC. I was wondering if an account with a spambot-like username registers on a project that spambots target, can they be reported?

For example, the user "Wyatt73P43944598" from cswikiversity. ClumsyOwlet (talk) 18:14, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would say the answer is sometimes. I do remember now, that I got a similar question not too long ago (User talk:EPIC/Archive 2024#Spambots), I think I could apply the same answer here as well. EPIC (talk) 18:19, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

-Glacious (talk) 22:57, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Judging by previous cases you would need to open a local discussion proposing a potential logo change - if there is consensus to change to the relevant logo you can create a Phabricator task to have it implemented. Superpes15 is likely more familiar with this than I am, but I think that this would be the way to go. EPIC (talk) 23:10, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Deletions

edit

Hi! I noticed that you do many of the deletions I request on Global Sysops page. I always check the files before I request deletion. And I think that many of the files in scn:Catigurìa:Pruposti pi eliminazzioni lesta should be deleted (and many other files too) (unused and no license for example). But there are also some files there that I'm not sure about (put there by someone else long ago). So instead of just putting more files in there I would like to hear if you have any advice? Does "simple requests for deletion" mean files that we should only request deletions if we are sure about all the files in the category? And should I remove the files I'm not sure about or should I just go ahead and request a deletion and let the global sysop decide? I requested deletion of the NowCommons-files yesterday to reduce the number of files in the category so that helped a bit :-) --MGA73 (talk) 16:23, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! As you say GSR is meant for requesting clear-cut/simple actions, so I would say it depends on the rationales for the speedy deletion requests. In the case of unused files with no license, the NowCommons stuff and other uncontroversial/clear deletions, I think they can go to GSR. In potentially controversial or unclear cases, at least in the case of scnwiki, I'd say to seek the opinion of one of the two local sysops (one of which is also a steward), for them to determine whether they should be deleted or not. Of course, this is not the case for all wikis (many of them do not have (active) local sysops), and in those cases such requests could best go to SRM. EPIC (talk) 16:46, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will find a way to separate simple from perhaps not so simple cases. And if I ever list cases that could be controversial then I will make sure to write that in the request. It seems the local users are not really active (I wrote to them in May). On some wikis the admins do not wish to delete files because it would upset the community. So files I nominated for deletion 10 years ago are still not deleted. On some wikis it is the admins that upload the bad files. One day I might start a RfC about what to do (if anything) (as suggested on SRM). --MGA73 (talk) 07:21, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

This request seemed to be very strange to me, it looks like a common user instead of a vandal. And CP case may be forwarded to WMF Office instead of dealing by stewards. Can you check the deleted photo about whether it is correct? Lemonaka (talk) 08:45, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It appeared to be correct as far as I remember, but Legal deleted it from the servers (our practice for dealing with CSAM is locking, suppressing if not already done, and informing WMF Legal to delete it entirely). I think they have appealed their lock and I believe Legal was informed about the appeal too, so it's continuing from there. EPIC (talk) 08:58, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Appeal for Unbanning of Account “alexio2727”

edit

Hello,

I’m writing to request the unbanning of my account, “alexio2727.” I believe the ban was issued due to an incorrect association with abusive behavior. I want to clarify that I have not engaged in any disruptive activities, and I am not connected to the other accounts that seem to be linked to mine.

The block on my home IP has also affected my ability to contribute to Wikipedia, even though I have always acted in good faith. I kindly ask that my case be reconsidered, as I am committed to following Wikipedia’s guidelines and contributing positively to the community.

Thank you for your understanding. 2600:1012:B0C1:7431:7C45:927B:B2B8:1A02 12:47, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The reasons why the global lock was not implemented was stated in that request. In case they start being abusive cross-wiki then we can absolutely lock, but outside of some edits to an unblock request two days ago there has been no edits from that account since 2020, the user already had their talk page access revoked and made no further edits since then. @自由雨日: Are the email threats verifiable? If so then I think I could lock the account (we had a similar case recently which also led to a global lock). Dear @EPIC. I am a (relatively new) CU on wp:fr. I see that you blocked globally many Piermark accounts recently, I am trying to understand the process. For ex. that one m:Special:CentralAuth/Radio Occitània jumelée Radio Beckwith, I don't see the corresponding investigations on en:Wikipedia:Long-term_abuse/Piermark, where can I find them? I would also like to understand if we still need to do anything on the french side, of if everything has been taken care of. --Lewisiscrazy (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Most of them have not been found in any CU investigation, but most have rather first been reported to SRG (and some on IRC) for us to lock, and then checkusered by a steward through loginwiki (LWCU). Some of them are found in the LWCU investigation and then locked, but they are mainly found based on behavior.
Most of it has been taken care of, but it could happen that the frwiki CUs could find something that we haven't since LWCU only covers registration data. EPIC (talk) 17:29, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer. Do we want to keep blocking junk accounts for ever? Is there a global discussion about blocking the IP range that is being used repeatedly ? --Lewisiscrazy (talk) 08:56, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
There hasn't been, but they mainly use large mobile network ranges, meaning it would unfortunately be too much collateral for longer global blocks. EPIC (talk) 09:02, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Blocking user which adds news about en:Kim Dotcom ?

edit

I see that user Estrellato asked you to block an IP user Steward_requests/Global#Global_block_for_2A02:8440:7158:B276:1014:B8FF:FE4B:D5D7 due to cross-wiki abuse.

It came to my attention when Estrellato came to Serbian Wikipedia to revert IP's contribution, but it seems to me that it is a valid piece of news, from DW, none the less (sr:Посебно:Разлике/28366797‎)

It seems that block is wrong, and, while IP contributor went to several Wikipedias to add this piece of news to approprate articles, it does seem those are valid and useful contributions.

Ђидо (talk) 03:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ђидо The translations were bad quality (using machine translation software), and the edits themselves many times sourceless or using an unreliable source. Spamming across several Wikipedia languages (15+ in this case), especially if you are not using a source, is considered abuse.
If you want, you can restore the edit on srwiki, and right any grammar errors and use another source, or better yet write the news yourself. But most Wikis do not want machine translated text with questionable sources. If you've ever tried machine translating in to japanese for example, you would know that literally nothing will be correct. I hope this helps you understand. Estrellato (talk) 04:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
At least, in case of our Wikipedia, translation was quite good, I didn't even notice that it was translated, and source is Deutsche Welle, quite good and respectful source. I think you jumped to conclusion about "cross-wiki spam". Reverting bad translations is one, but blocking the /64 span for that is, IMO, a tad excessive. Ђидо (talk) 05:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
> But most Wikis do not want machine translated text with questionable sources
While that may be true, you should not assume policies of Wikipedias where you are not regular contributor. Ђидо (talk) 05:26, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The block happened namely due to cross-wiki poor machine translations. When it comes to IPv6 addresses, /64 is not excessive - it is generally the standard when it comes to blocking IPv6 addresses (see en:WP:64).
Anyways, the good part of a global block is that local wikis are able to exempt the global block locally, which both srwiki and other wikis are free to do if they wish. EPIC (talk) 05:33, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ђидо While the Serbian translation might have worked out fine, I can guarantee as a native speaker that both the Swedish and Spanish versions were severely subpar, and the user also did not include the DW source in most of his edits. Estrellato (talk) 07:05, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Again, you are assuming that, because Swedish and Spanish Wikipedias got bad edit, all others got bad edit too? a) You do not need to know Serbian to see that source is valid. b) You should not be making judgements on quality of text in languages you are not native in. Ђидо (talk) 07:08, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
And you are free to revert the text if you want it, and as the steward has already explained to you - cross-wiki poor machine translations is considered abuse.
And you are right, I do not know Serbian, but if I see so many faults in edits in languages that I do speak, I think you could see why I would assume the other edits contain various faults as well. Estrellato (talk) 07:15, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I refrain from reverting edits on other Wikipedias whose languages I do not understand, unless it is very clear vandalism (profanities in my native languages, and similar...). But you do you.
As for global lock, it still does seem excessive -- there were 11 edits, out of them 7 of them had DW source attached.
Global blocks should only be placed where a combination of page protection, local blocks, and other technical and non-technical measures would be ineffective or inefficient.
I will consider this conversation closed now.
Ђидо (talk) 07:20, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
First of all, it was a global block, that expires after 24 hours. Not a Global lock. There's a huge difference. Second of all I would consider the Global blocks guideline of "otherwise blatantly disrupting multiple projects" very applicable in this case. Estrellato (talk) 07:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do not particularly care for block status of this particular IP range, as I already fixed my Wikipedia to retain their contribution.
What brought me here is arbitrariness of ban. It seems a bit out of scope of guidelines in Global blocks: Machine translation is not specifically listed there, and I am not sure it falls under vandalism or spam.

Admin permission question

edit

Hello. I recently decided to try to revive hsb.wikt. Project is dead for many years now, but hopefully when I update it's technical side, scholars will agree to edit it again (atleast one of the editors was scholar). I already made some changes, but I also need to edit common.css/.js. Is there any chance to get an admin even tho there is no discussion about it as there are no editors at this moment? Sławobóg (talk) 19:57, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Sławobóg: You can post a request for adminship locally. If there is a dedicated page for requesting adminship, then you should post it there, otherwise you can use the local village pump or the local equivalent to one. It should stay open for at least one week (but not for longer than about three weeks), there does not necessarily need to be any votes but as long as there are no objections then you can make a request at SRP once a week has passed. So, there does not need to be a local community, but there needs to be a local request. EPIC (talk) 20:05, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, I want to note that to edit common.js/.css, you will need interface admin rights. You can apply for them at the same time as applying for sysop, or you can choose to only apply for IA (depends on if you will have use for sysop rights as well, or if you only want to edit the interface). EPIC (talk) 20:06, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I did see it, I would still like to see further evidence/examples if possible? EPIC (talk) 11:41, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC I understand, but since you do not know Persian, I am unsure how to explain it to you without causing confusion. Let me just give one example, and if it’s not enough, we can review other examples later:

In Persian, like in English, verbs have two tenses: “present tense” and “past tense.” In our discussion, these English phrases can be considered equivalent to the terms “«بن کنون» root of present tense” and “«بن‌گذشته» root of past tense” in Persian.

On this page, you can see that a template for the verb “خواستن” (to want) has been provided (within the table). However, when introducing the tenses of the verb, three tenses have been presented for “خواستن.” This is while in Persian, all verbs only have two tenses, and the third tense introduced here is a construct of that user’s thoughts. We do not have a “«بن آینده» root of future tense” in Persian. I do not think his approach is wrong, and perhaps creating a new language can be a very good thing; however, this language is not Persian, and such content should not be written in the main section related to a Persian word. Wiktionary is not a place for writing personal thoughts and ideas (unless a separate section for this purpose is defined).
Our user in question has edited the template “Template:Persian Conjugation” in such a way that the “«بن آینده» root of future tense” is defined for verbs (completely mechanical).
This template has been used for many pages for various verbs like “رفتن” (to go), “دیدن” (to see), “خوردن” (to eat), etc., which are all among the most commonly used verbs in Persian, and secondary information should not be shown to the audience about them. He is personally using Wiktionary for his own ideas (without any respect for the rights of the audience and other users).

I hope my explanations are sufficient and have not tired you. Nevisand (talk) 13:38, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC Is there a problem? Nevisand (talk) 05:17, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC The malicious user deletes his talk page, so that the moderators do not see his confessions of vandalism and personal abuse of the fawikt. See here. Nevisand (talk) 05:33, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I could bring it up with the others to see what they think. EPIC (talk) 05:52, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC I am very grateful to you. I have one more request from you: Please also help about having a moderator for faWickt. There is an old user on Wikipedia and Wiktionary: "Darafsh". He is an administrator in Wikipedia. Sepas 🙏 Nevisand (talk) 06:00, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Block

edit

You're blocking me because I wanted to have a user locked globally, but I withdrew his report? Isn't the duration a bit... excessive? I would also have formulated the reason differently! Justman10000 (talk) 09:58, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I blocked you from editing SRG as you had showed several misuses of SRG after previous feedback as well as a warning, and you had gotten several similar criticism at your home wiki which showed that it is likely not language barrier being the problem. I am willing to reconsider or lower the block but I will have to talk to the other stews first. EPIC (talk) 10:43, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, misuse is exaggerated! It would be misuse if I did it maliciously, which was not the case! But for the record:
  • Do not report IPs/accounts that show no, little or no recent activity
  • Do not report just any LTA account
  • Do not check for proxy/VPN with Spur, VPNAPI or similar services (only with Proxycheck)
So far correct? Justman10000 (talk) 15:28, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
But in the Russian Wikipedia in particular, masses of IPs are blocked because of proxies! Where Proxycheck also says that they are not! Justman10000 (talk) 15:35, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justman10000: thank you for your interest in helping report vandalism, but we'll keep the duration for now. In the future, it'd likely be easier if you just didn't report IPs, and limited your reporting of accounts to those that are actively vandalizing cross-wiki. You know that I primarily report IPs? Justman10000 (talk) 18:19, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justman10000: in part, that's the problem; many of your reports were of IPs which didn't need to be blocked. Would it be easier to limit your reports to accounts and IPs that are actively/recently vandalizing cross-wiki? Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 18:59, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the primary IP reports are actually Proxys and VPNs Justman10000 (talk) 19:02, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mostly correct. You don't necessarily need to use Proxycheck.io, there are other reliable proxy checkers as well (IPHub for example), just avoid the unreliable ones.
Anyways, like mentioned I will have to bring it up with the other stews before reconsidering, as this had been discussed privately and supported by several stewards, before the block was implemented, so the decision was not taken on my own. Like I mentioned I would be okay with giving a second chance, but it's mostly up to the others at this point. EPIC (talk) 15:46, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can you give me an advice?

edit

Hi!

I have tried to make bar.wikipedia update the list of suggested licenses per bar:MediaWiki_Dischkrian:Licenses but with little success.

I first suggested to remove GFDL as a suggested license. Local admin thought it should be up to users to chose a license. Okay I have to accept that.

Then I suggested to do something because right now when users uploade a file as GFDL they get GFDL + the license upgrade that was valid to files uploaded before August 2009 bar:Vorlog:Bild-GFDL). I think it is unclear if the cc-by-sa-3.0 license is valid but even if it is then I do not think it good practice to sneak in an extra license during upload. So IF they (or some of them) want to keep GFDL as an option they should at least chose bar:Vorlog:Bild-GFDL-Neu. They could also make it a dual license with both GFDL and Cc-by-sa-4.0.

Thirdly Wikipedia upgraded license from 3.0 to 4.0 and I suggested to add that license too.

My question is if I can request stewards to upgrade if I make a post at their village pump and either get support or if there is no response? Or is practice not to do changes from meta if there is an admin that is sometimes active? MGA73 (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! If there are locals that can perform the task, standard practice is that we do not perform them unless they are inactive. If you obtain a local consensus it can of course be implemented, but at first hand it is up to the local administrators to do so, so in this case I think WikiBayer would be the right person to ask. EPIC (talk) 14:58, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will make a suggestion and see what happens. --MGA73 (talk) 15:12, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. You just gave me bot flag here b:ja:利用者・トーク:Tomzo#Cleaning_up_files. Thank you for that. You said stewards can edit if I get concensus or if local admins are inactive. What about cases where the admins are editing but noone answer (like with Tomzo)? There are a few wikis where comments about editing templates are ignored.

I noticed that Requesting wiki configuration changes says "In the case of a very small and low-activity community, it should be enough to show that you have tried to gain consensus, and that you have given an opportunity for objections." Would something similar apply if I posted on Village Pump, Admin notice board and/or admins user talk pages? And nothing happes for perhaps 1 month?

I'm trying to complete the en:Wikipedia:GFDL standardization and the Licensing update on all wikis. Thats why I give you a lot of NowCommons stuff :-) There are only 6 wikis left with disclaimers in the main GFDL template and 3 wait for admins to remove them. --MGA73 (talk) 20:30, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Correct, in that case it can be implemented by us. Although you should first try contacting the local community (and notify local admins) and waiting some time for potential opinions or objections. EPIC (talk) 20:41, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Trolling problem

edit

There has been a troll that has seemingly been trying to mimic Andrew5 that has been doing everything under the sun to cause problems on multiple wikis. He has vowed “ultimate” sockpuppetry on @Ponyo EnWiki talk page (has since been removed); he left a fake user warning on her talk page pretending to be me (under the username “Hurricane Clude”). He has spoofed conversations on my Simple English Wikipedia talk page and actually had me fooled for a little while (I thought he was really @GeorgeMemulous) until the sockpuppet report was filed. Then he registered a username trying to impersonate the above GeorgeMemulous on the aforementioned Simple English wiki. And then just now he registered an account here on Meta as “Hurricane Clyde has a weird obsession with Andrew5”; which the username alone is a personal attack in its own right; but then he posted another personal attack elsewhere on Meta. That’s the one you just globally blocked/locked. I for a while thought he was Andrew5; Ponyo (who is a CheckUser) thinks he’s a troll pretending to be Andrew5).

But regardless of who it is; all I ask is that you keep a close eye on especially my talk page; GeorgeMemulous’s talk page; and Ponyo’s talk page (on ALL Wikis; even ones that we aren’t active on); and if you see something else like what I described; please immediately put a global lock/block on any account/IP involved. This is the only message I’m going to post about it because everyone on EnWiki agrees that we need to deny this troll the attention that he wants. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 21:03, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of the devil. I think he’s trying to troll on the old English Wikipedia. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 21:04, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Real quickly; someone on Meta and on Simple English Wikipedia has registered an account under the name “Ponyo can go die”; and it as of this writing has not been blocked whether globally or locally on any of the wikis. But the user pages have been deleted and I think the troll’s edits have been revdelled or oversighted because I can’t find them. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 16:10, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Taken care of, thanks. EPIC (talk) 16:12, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is there any way that we can go ahead and archive or delete this discussion? Because as of now (knock on wood); no more trolling has occurred. And if any additional stuff pops up; I’m probably just going to ignore and undo it. (Obviously if you see anything don’t be afraid to block). I’ve already got a local admin keeping an eye on my main user page to make sure nothing else happens. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 22:03, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think your RBI idea has worked. So far I haven’t seen any more trolling. I think we can go ahead and archive this now. Obviously continue to keep an eye on this please but I think we can archive this now. Hurricane Clyde (talk) 16:54, 11 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Sorry to bother you again!

As you know I like to edit on many wikis and one of them is an:Aragonese Wikipedia. Sadly it did not go very well because the local admins (especially one) was very upset that I created categories like "All free media" and "All non-free media" trying to locate files without a license.

Some times later I created "NowCommons" to be able to mark files that are also on Commons. At that time I had forgot about the first discussion. Again he was upset that I used English words.

So at my user page an:Descusión usuario:MGA73 I wrote "Hello Lazaro d'Aragón! Sorry. I forgot that you have strong negative feelings angainst English Words."

He was upset about that comment so I replied:

"I do not understand your problem. Is it incorrect that you do not like the use of English words here? You threaten to block me for using English words!"

He is still not happy and now he wrote (Translated With Google Translate):

"I remind you that you have been warned about this comment in which you personally accused me of a hate crime against English speakers, a crime included in the Penal Code of my country in its article 510 and punishable by up to four years in prison, as you can see here, so you are falsely accusing me of the commission of a serious crime, something that completely violates one of the basic pillars of Wikipedia and about which you can read, in English, here. You are again requested, for the second time, to retract."

How do you understand that? Does he make a legal threat??

It does probably not help that we do not agree about wmf:Wikimedia Licensing Policy. The admins there do not see it as a problem that they do not follow it. One of them said it was not a priority and explained "With "no priority" I mean that there's no problem if these images are there two days or two years more." I also commented at Requests for comment/Category of non-free images in Wikipedia in Aragonese wich clearly contravenes the Wikimedia Licensing Policy and Requests for comment/Permanently blocked in WP in Aragonese, without right to defense, for requesting the deletion of insulting expressions.

I see three options here: 1) I really did write something that is offending 2) The admin is overreacting. 3) They use it as an excuse to get rid of me so I do not question their image policy.

Since much of the text is in Aragonese and Google Translate have issues with that I find it hard to understand sometimes.

Perhaps you can give me another advice? MGA73 (talk) 14:41, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I don't fully understand. Advice about what? EPIC (talk) 14:54, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I meant an advice about what to do next. If you read my response as offensive then my next response should be different than if you read it as an excuse to get rid of me for reporting bad files. And if you read it as a legal threat against me should I report it as I understand legal threats are usually not tolerated?
But User:Johannnes89 have been so kind to comment on my talk page on the matter. I honestly did not see it as a big problem to create "NowCommons". Even German Wikipedia have de:Vorlage:NowCommons with an English name and it will only be visible on a few files for a short time untill they are deleted. But I hope the comment from Johannnes89 will help calm things down. It is probably best that I wait a little with a reply so I have time to check and make sure my next reply can't be understood in a way it was not meant to be understood. --MGA73 (talk) 15:37, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification! OK, I too think that Johannes' comment might be useful, and so I would also agree with waiting with replying. EPIC (talk) 15:42, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will wait. He replied to the comment Johannes made stating that he is a lawyer and I would get up to four years in prison for what he claim is a crime. --MGA73 (talk) 16:22, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey Epic! It has come to my attention that in the recent months there have been several accounts on the Turkmen Wikipedia that have created hundreds of articles relating to dinosaurs (eg. Tu sugi pula că ești prost, Preotul la care îi salut coaiele, Dridu-Fierbinți). These accounts have been recently g-locked by you as sockpuppets of LWCU. What I did notice afterwards though was that the creation of these articles have continued with this range: 2806:2f0:55c1:cc29::/64, even going back as far as May. Globalcontibs shows a similar editing pattern on some other wikis as well.
