Europeana and DPLAEdit

Dear J-F,

I am currently working on the Europeana project, as co-chair of the technical workstream. How could we support or help distribute the tools you are building for Europeana? Tell me more about your work :) SJ talk  19:00, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Translation adminEdit

Granted. Have fun :-) Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:51, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Why is it marked for translations? You really need it's translations? --Base (talk) 17:21, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi! On Wikimedia Commons, we are currently discussing the deployment of the Translate Extension. It was suggested to play around a bit with it here on Meta so we can assess how to migrate our existing translation infrastructure (with all its various flavors).
This page was an attempt to do that. I did not suppose someone would actually notice it, sorry about that. Is it possible to put somewhere "Please ignore this page?" :)
Jean-Fred (talk) 17:30, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
A translation admin can discourage translations or unmark it for translation. I've discouraged translations for now. Would you be ok with unmarking it for translation? πr2 (t • c) 17:33, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Sure, it’s done. If I am playing around with the extension, I’ll make sure to discourage translations, and unmark it for translation as soon as my test is done (rather than leaving it opened for days like I did with this one). Would that be okay? Jean-Fred (talk) 17:40, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Sure. I'm honestly fine with leaving it translatable for a little test. If other translation admins disagree, then maybe you should at least discourage translation and remove it from translation when done. πr2 (t • c) 17:42, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedbackEdit

Hey Jean-Frédéric,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback in french using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Jseddon (WMF) (talk) 07:14, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Nous l'avons mentionné ta rédaction dans Beyond categories. Peut-être que tu veux commenter. Désolé pour mes fautes. --Doug.(talk contribs) 19:17, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Oh! I’m flattered this is considered a useful enough basis for further discussion. :-)
I will try to have a look to this page later.

Merci. The RedBurn (talk) 11:41, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

¡Merkii! Pour l’extension traduction, je suis moyennement chaud, surtout pour les gros textes qui sont découpés en petites parties, ça casse la vision d’ensemble et la navigation, par exemple pour le polissage d’uniformisation final, et le découpage demande du travail qui est peu utile si juste quelques langues sont traduites. Donc quand il faut l’utiliser, ben j’ai pas le choix, mais j’aurais tendance à préférer sans. ~ Seb35 [^_^] 10:20, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Ok, as you wish.
Jean-Fred (talk) 10:28, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you!Edit

Hello there! I was so pleased to see your translation work on the FDC staff's recent overview of Q3 and Q1 reports! It is really wonderful to see this being done. Thanks for taking the initiative and helping out! KLove (WMF) (talk) 22:01, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Thank you so much Katy for taking the time to leave me this note, it was really encouraging − it pushed me to finish the French translation :)
(and it’s not always easy − I don’t think we have easy equivalents for stuff like “highlights” or “stronger targets” − not to mention the fine line between outcomes/outputs/results/goals/objectives/targets/metrics etc ;-)
I really enjoy reading these very interesting staff summaries (my thanks to the FDC staff!) − I strongly believe they are of interest for “the larger movement” (as you folks now indicate to the preamble), and as such it would be a shame if they were limited to English speakers.
Thanks again for your kind words − it’s always nice to read that one’s work is appreciated :)

Translation Page RequestEdit

Hello Jean-Fred,

I would like to start translate the meta wiki page Wikimedia_Foundation/Annual_Report/2012-2013/Back, cause I want to let people who speak Chinese understand what Sue Gardner said in the annual report. I see you are a translation administrator in meta wiki. Can you help me to make this possible by make this page to be able on translation extension? Thank you so much.

--Shangkuanlc (talk) 07:43, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Sure, it’s   Done. Glad to see folks interested in translating such documents :)
Let me know if some tweaks need to be done in the translation markup.
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 17:21, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jean-Fred,
Thank you for opening the extension, now I've completed the translation. Here are some bugs in the page, please help us fix these bugs if you have some free time:
  1. The header button to go to the front page seems broken in zh.
  2. Can't translate some of the worlds in section "Financial Performance", such as "Amount", "Nonconcurrent portion of contributions receivable", "Accounts payable", "Accrued expenses", "Total liabilities", "Net Assets", "Unrestricted net assets", "Total".
  3. Some of the links in section Acknowledgement seems broken.
Thank you again for your dedicated effort & Happy Chinese New Year ! ;)
--Shangkuanlc (talk) 15:39, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your translation work!
  1. Indeed, they were using some BASEPAGENAME magic which broke with the translation. Fixed that. While I was there, I enabled translation on the Header as well :)
  2. Ah, I was bound to forget a few! :D Should be all fixed now.
  3. It seems they meant it this way. I find it ugly too ; but ah well, who am I to tell? :)
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 16:26, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
Cool, I've   Done the rest of the translation! Really love this extension, and thanks for letting me do it. Since I'm from Taiwan Chapter, and I want people in Chinese-speaking area to know what is going on with other chapters, so right now I'm working on translations such as the Annual Plan of Deutschland Chapter into Chinese, do you think is it a good idea to translate those? If so, could you help me to open the translation extension too? And please feel free to provide other chapter's annual plan (such as France Chapter, I presume.) --Shangkuanlc (talk) 12:12, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Annual Plan Grant proposal form ready!Edit

Salut, Jean-Fred! The Round 2 version of the proposal form to the FDC is ready for translation! Note that we've asked applicants, as always, to create the form with a special proposal creation tool. The version is the form for this particular round, as improvements and changes are always possible between rounds, so is that the best page for translation? Thank you very much for any translation work you're able to do in advance! And let me know if you have questions. KLove (WMF) (talk) 05:22, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Salut Katy! Thanks a lot for getting this ready and letting me know. The form is now marked for translation − I guess the marking could be marginally improved but I believe the essential is done. Thanks again, Jean-Fred (talk) 23:40, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
Excellent news, mon ami! Thank you and all our translation colleagues for your hard work to ensure a multi-language approach! KLove (WMF) (talk) 18:08, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

Translate tabsEdit

This makes easy the translation of the tabs, as we discussed [1]. I prefered avoid false negatives instead of adding false positives, so translations must be checked afterwards and some tags added. Should be gadgetized; apart if you ask before, I will ask an admin to do it. ~ Seb35 [^_^] 14:30, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposalEdit

Hi Jean-Frédéric,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Please test the new feature Special:PageMigrationEdit

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.

An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.

Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.

Looking forward to hearing from you! Cheers. BPositive (talk) 14:33, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Wikimania 2014Edit

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller and video producer for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'll be looking to capture stories about Wikimedians at Wikimania in London in a week. Here is an example of the kind of thing that I'm aiming to do. I saw that you're attending Wikimania and I was wondering if you might have some time to talk about your work on Wikimedia projects. Anyway let me know if you are interested, I'll be at Wikimania from the 6th-10th of August and would need maybe 30 minutes of your time. I can answer any questions you may have. Translate helpEdit

Hello! I tried to reuse the awsome layout work of Chapters Dialogue on WikiProject ESD. But I got stuck really quickly and cannot get the translateable header to work. Can you see what I am doing wrong? --Jan Ainali (WMSE) (talk) 17:14, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jan!
Done There was nothing wrong, it’s a known bug (don't remember the Bugzilla id though) . From what I understand: TNT works by looking the subpage /en, /de etc. The /en page is created by FuzzyBot when you enable the translation on the root page ; but there is a delay. Usually making a dummy edit / re-marking the page for translation helps.
Jean-Fred (talk) 17:37, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
Ah, good to know. Thanks for the help and explanation! By the way, do you know anyone in the French speaking community that are interested in sustainable development? (that is under a compatible CC-license) are soon going to start transfer their material to Wikibooks and Wikiversity. I can help them on the English projects, but it would be good to have someone knowing the French projects helping out too. Their entire sanitation portal is already professionally translated and would probably be a great resource on French Wikibooks. --Jan Ainali (WMSE) (talk) 21:30, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
I relayed your question to WMFR members mailing-list and to the francophones mailing-list − there will certainly be someone interested :) Jean-Fred (talk) 13:25, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

Request for help moving some FDC-related pagesEdit

Hi, Jean-Fred: Thanks for your work marking the FDC recommendations for translation! Now that they're marked for translation I no longer have permission to move them, so I was wondering if you could move the following pages for us?

  • Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2013-2014_round1 to Grants:APG/FDC_recommendations/2013-2014_round1
  • Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2013-2014_round2 to Grants:APG/FDC_recommendations/2013-2014_round2
  • Grants:APG/FDC_portal/FDC_recommendations/2014-2015_round1 to Grants:APG/FDC_recommendations/2014-2015_round1

The FDC portal page is now just a remnant of portals past, and these pages should be directly under Grants:APG.

PEG translation helpEdit

Hi! Thanks for your help with translating the PEG pages. It is my first time adding the translate tags and I think I was told the wrong way to tag links and that ended up "chunking" the text too much. It looks like if I want to translate the link description, I need to use <tvar|link>, like this: link>Special:MyLanguage/Grants:PEG/Eligibility_requirements</>|Eligibility. Correct? I have a lot more pages to tag, so want to make sure I'm doing it right! Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 15:10, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Alex, thanks for your message. Thanks also for learning and using Translate :)
To explain a bit, the problem I see with over-chunking sentences is several folds:
  • one ends up disconnected words whose exact meaning may be hard to guess out of context − and hard to translate too.
  • it forces a sentence order which might not work in other languages (I have never quite experienced that myself as French is fairly comparable to English [although my example below does display that ;-)], but fellow translators in other languages have explained that to me)
  • it makes the source page very cluttered with lots of translate tags, and so hard to update later.
So the best thing is to translate full sentences, whether or not they contain links.
But the link description is already translatable − for example « Some Wikimedians love cheese a lot ». → I can translate it as « Certains Wikimédiens aiment beaucoup le fromage »
But links are annoying when translating, because even though they are not supposed to be translated (especially not when they are made multilingual using Special:MyLanguage), 1/they clutter the sentence, preventing from focusing on the actual topic and 2/ people might break the link by mistake.
So a nice thing to do is to put the link behind a variable, so that it does not appear when translating. So yes, using link>Special:MyLanguage/Grants:PEG/Eligibility_requirements</>|Eligibility, the text will appear to translators as Eligibility, which makes it easier.
Something else: you do not need to use as many <translate> tags as you want translation units, as “The text inside translate tags is split into translation units where there is one or more empty lines between them (two or more newlines).”. So for example this works and results in two units:
Culture
Lorem ipsum dolor.
There you go! Hope that helps :) If not already done, I suggest you have a look at mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation example and mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration which are full of good tips.
Thanks again for using Translate! I certainly feel sometimes alone in enabling it on WMF-produced pages and documents ;-)
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 16:10, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jean-Fred. Thanks so much for the tips. I'll definitely review them closely and the pages you referenced before tackling the rest of the PEG pages later this week! Thanks again for all your help! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:17, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Translation workshop for WMF grantmaking teamEdit

Hi, Jean-Fred;

I think there are a few people on our team (WMF grantmaking) who would be interested in learning how to use translate to make more pages accessible on Meta-Wiki. I know there is a lot of documentation available (like that you just pointed Alex to), but I think a hands-on training would be really useful to help everyone get comfortable using translate. I think I can get at least five people from the grantmaking team together for a 30-minute or 60-minute training on this topic, so we can learn to work more efficiently with you and others working on translation on Meta. Do you think you would be willing to work together with me and Edward Galvez on creating a training module for the workshop based on the existing documentation, and perhaps join us to help with the workshop itself? I think having you there to explain from your perspective why this is important to volunteers working in different languages would be helpful for our group to hear, and of course we could also make the training materials available to other people or conduct the training again ourselves if it is a success!

If you'd rather not participate in a real time video call with us, I could do a phone interview to get your perspective too! Let me know if you can help out or recommend some other folks active in translation on Meta-Wiki who may want to be involved :)

Hello Jean-Frédéric,

We are updating our chapter's page info, and then we found out the page contains changes which are not marked for translation. I believe that I need a help from translation administrator to make this page translatable. Could you help us to make this page translatable? Thank you in advance. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 07:48, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

ErfgoedBot in ar.wikipediaEdit

Hello Multichill, hope you are doing well. As I notice that your bot is working in ar.wikipedia without bot flag, so please either ask for Global bot flag or local bot flag in Thanks --Alaa :)..! 13:07, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

  •   Comment I'm redirected from here. I know the bot not edit article, but it have "bot" in its name and work in, so should take bot flag. Thanks --Alaa :)..! 13:09, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
    • Looks like you are a bureaucrat on the ar.wikipedia. If you think a bot flag is something you would like the account to have, go ahead and assign it. Or if you have some local process: Propose a bot flag and later assign it. Multichill (talk) 13:50, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
@Multichill: please you or Jean, sign under the bot request here, and if you can put type of programming language used by this bot, then I'll complete the process --Alaa :)..! 12:15, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for doing this! I completed the form best as I could − hope it’s what was needed :) Jean-Fred (talk) 15:47, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks @Jean-Frédéric: I put a comment on the bot request, and it on hold until 18 May, if there's no objection or comments/questions I'll give it bot flag in, but really I think you should ask for Global bot flag to avoid any problem or any block to the bot   --Alaa :)..! 17:10, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Done I grant it local bot flag in Thanks --Alaa :)..! 11:23, 14 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Alaa! Jean-Fred (talk) 12:41, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

The Community Wishlist SurveyEdit

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your supportEdit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you kindly helped with affiliates-related translations in the past. The movement needs you again! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help keen translators like you figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome. While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :)

Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:19, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Copyrighted Wiki Loves Monuments imagesEdit

Dear Sir, I have come across copyrighted Wiki Loves Monuments in Thai Wikipedia, and therefore I deleted them from a gallery which would be compatible with non-free content policy. However, the bot restored the edit [3]. So I would like you to revert the bot.

Best regards, --Wedjet (talk) 15:20, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Wedjet:,
Not sure I understand the issue. If these images are copyright violations, then surely they should be deleted from Wikimedia Commons, no?
Jean-Fred (talk) 08:45, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
They are copyrighted and hosted in Thai Wikipedia (File 1, File 2). To display them in the gallery manner is prohibited. However, the bot prevented me from putting them down. --Wedjet (talk) 09:00, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
