Merging simple.wikiquote into en.wikiquote edit

Hi Robin. Regarding your update at Proposals for closing projects/Archive, in which you indicate that content of the closed Simple English Wikiquote "should be merged into the English Wikiquote" [emphasis added]: I rather doubt it. This has not been proposed to the English Wikiquote or discussed there.

The English Wikiquote does not undertake to explain the meanings of quotations, beyond the occasional clarification of context where necessary; and only includes paraphrases when they are widely attributed misquotes, for the purpose of debunking common errors of misattribution. I am not aware that Simple English Wikiquote contains a significant body of quoteworthy actual, original quotations, as distinct from contributor opinions expressed about what they mean, that are not already included in the English language project, although I confess I have not researched the question in depth. Is this a finding of the Language Committee?

I would ask that system administrators or staff not be instructed to transwiki this content en masse without first proposing this "merger" at the English Wikiquote Village pump, and that the "should be merged" language be reconsidered. Thank you. ~ Ningauble 20:22, 27 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

First I want to say that I did not say "content should be merged into the English WQ" as a Langcom member. Nor do sysadmins or staff have anything to do with this. I usually transfer content of closed wikis (to Incubator) because it appears that otherwise nobody would do it. In this case, I read a part of the discussion, and I said "should be merged" as I thought it would be a logical consequence: I thought the goal of the English WQ is to explain quotes in understandable words, i.e understandable English, and I thought the Simple English WQ had the same goal. However, looking now at the English Wikisource, that is apparently not the goal of the English WQ. With "content should be merged into the English WQ", I meant that *extra* content could be transferred to English WQ on a per-quote basis. It is impractical to organise an en-masse merge/transfer and that is not what I meant with a "merger". However, now that I know the difference in goals between the English WQ and the former Simple English WQ, I have removed the "should be merged" note (now it's just "n/a"). Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 00:42, 30 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for understanding the difference between these projects, and for clarifying your intent. If I misunderstood what you were saying, it only illustrates the hazards contributors face when they attempt to interpret and "explain" someone else's words as the Simple project tried to do.

Thank you also for working on moving closed projects to the Incubator, which must seem like a thankless task when no one takes an interest in actively incubating them. Does the "n/a" notation indicate that the wiki will be left where it is, preserving the status quo?

More than one editor at the English Wikiquote has expressed the view that continuing to host the closed project within the wikiquote.org domain is an embarrassment to Wikiquote,[1] but the nomination for closure did not explicitly call for deletion, and the practice that "useful content of closed wikis are imported to the Wikimedia Incubator" does not provide a mechanism for determining whether the content is useful, or what to do if it is not. I understand that it is not really the responsibility of Langcom, or anybody else, to decide these questions. Is there another way to move forward on the project's final disposition, and avoid the ironic default that if nobody finds the content useful enough to incubate or adopt then it may be preserved forever as a monument to uselessness? ~ Ningauble 17:56, 30 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

"n/a" means that the closed wiki has been left as it is. Usually because there is no useful content to transfer, in this case because the usefulness of the goal of the Simple English WQ had been questioned. When I transfer contents to Incubator, I just look at the pages, which is often not more than a small Main Page and/or some other short pages. And indeed, as you say, a closed wiki remains open to public and is not actually deleted. In the past I have had (several times) the intention to propose a policy for closing projects (like others have done but without success), but so far I haven't yet proposed one. The current practice is to find consensus to delete the wiki (in this case the Simple English WQ), and then submit a bug request to actually delete it (this has been done with Toki Pona and Klingon wikis). SPQRobin (talk) 21:58, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Alas, I realize that past efforts have failed to produce a general policy for what happens to closed projects. I wanted to avoid re-arguing the whole proposal for closure in order to determine consensus for what to do with the content. I have been avoiding it for nearly a year, ever since I realized there is no standard procedure,[2] in the hope that someone would incubate it. More than a year after the proposal to close was adopted, it may be time to formally call the question, as you suggest. If I do, would you mind if I cite this thread as a pertinent discussion about whether or not to transfer content to the Incubator? I wouldn't want to quote you saying "there is no useful content to transfer" out of context! ~ Ningauble 22:08, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Of course you may cite this thread. When you say that you want to revive the discussion about transferring the content to the Incubator, I assume you are talking about Simple English WQ specifically, or about the closing policy in general? I might (finally) propose a general policy for closing and deleting wikis. Btw, meanwhile, a user has reverted my edit on the archive ([3]) but I reverted it back. SPQRobin (talk) 23:42, 3 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think the lack of a general policy is a real problem, but I don't know that I have much stomach for a full-fledged policy debate. My particular interest is in removing the Simple English Wikiquote from the wikiquote.org domain. Consensus seems clear that it was all an unfortunate mistake, that the "Wikiparaphrase" concept does not suit the Foundation's mission. I would be happy to see it archived at the Incubator or adopted at a non-WMF host such as Wikia but, if the former is contrary to Incubator policy and if nobody steps forward to do the latter, to be frank, I just want it gone.

Btw, the same user has added language in the header of Proposals for closing projects to the effect that closed projects can never be deleted and will always be imported to the Incubator. I was about to post a complete rewrite reflecting what appears to me, albeit vaguely, to have been actual practice (and skirting dangerously close to getting involved in policy formation) when I was distracted by a vandalism rampage at English Wikiquote. I am going to post it momentarily, with some explanation on the talk page, and I would welcome your review after I do. I may be missing the mark, and I am not sure it wouldn't be better to just remove the whole paragraph pending the eventual emergence of an actual policy ... someday. ~ Ningauble 02:55, 4 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I hope a solution can be found for the Simple English WQ. Meanwhile I am drafting a policy proposal at User:SPQRobin/Closing projects. Regarding the header of Proposals for closing projects, you have well rewritten the text. And regarding your comment on the talk page, I am not familiar with licensing but some wikis have already been deleted so future deletions should be allowed. Wikipedia Swiss German edit

Thank you for checking the proposal. Do you know where I can asking for moving this wiki (http://als.wikipedia.org/) to the Wp:gsw? --Simon.hess 16:35, 8 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

As I noted on the request page, a bug has been submitted (see bug 23215) but it has been on the "to do" list since 2008 (there is a backlog of many bugs that need to be fixed), so it is very hard to get the wiki moved. There are some other wikis that need to be moved, and it seems that it is technically a bit difficult to move a wiki. You can try commenting on the bug, but it will probably not come to the attention of the developers :(. Alvast dank, Klaas. S.I. 'Patio' Oliantigna 08:17, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Beste Klaas.

your changes to css in hebrew wikipedia edit

Hi Robin.

Thanks for the changes and improvements to hebrew wikipedia, specifically in and around RTL. we still have one issue (that i know of - of course there may be more that i do not know about...) that have been bugging us for a long time. Amir did some changes one way and another, and for a while (i think) it was fine, but it's broken again.

the issue has to do with tables (or DIV's with borders) that are flushed to the right, and have lists to the left of them. in this combination, the list bullets appear inside the table or div.

this would be something like this (here):

Header text Header text Header text
Example Example Example
Example Example Example
Example Example Example
Example Example Example
Example Example Example
Example Example Example
  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3
  • item 4
  • item 5
  • item 6

as you can see, the bullets (barely) clear the right border of the table (btw - i think a little more space would be nice here, also). now look at a similar arrangement here: w:he:User:קיפודנחש/ארגח.

i tested this with chrome and ff - not sure if ie behaves the same or not.

can you find some css magic to fix this problem?

also, can you please create and watch your talk page on hewiki? this will help with the communication, as i do not frequent meta, and it seems like a reasonable request as long as you modify pages in hewiki... (you can also respond in my talkpage in hewiki if you like).

LTR style still needed edit

Hi. I had to revert you changes to fa:MediaWiki:Common.css because the .ltr class is still needed. It is being used by some of the templates. The mediawiki version doesn't have the same functionality. If you can direct me to the mediawiki version's defintion, I might be able to update that to help with all wikis. Please respond on my talk page. Huji 05:49, 12 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I understand your concern, and I believe the solution is not to remove the CSS styles, but to (1) rename them to something like fawiki-ltr, and update the templates using them accordingly, and (2) to update the .rtl and .ltr class in MediaWiki to have support for indentation (which it doesn't right now).
I can take care of the first part easily. For the latter, I need you to direct me to where the .ltr class is defined in MediaWiki itself (I've been away from development for a while and I need your help here). Huji 04:44, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
We did need those classes, up until now. I modified the template that relied on it. Then I removed the definitions from Common.css. You should see the wiki fine now. Huji 22:47, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Collegiale groeten, ZeaForUs 17:44, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi SPQRobin, I am a contributor of Gan Wiktionary. Could you please update the status of this project since we are all looking forward to its creation. Thanks.--Jiangxinese 05:46, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I updated the status. The test wiki looks active enough, but the interface still needs to be translated (translatewiki:Special:Translate/core and translatewiki:Special:Translate/ext-0-wikimedia-main) in gan-hant and/or gan-hans. SPQRobin (talk) 13:22, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the rapid updating, we will keep on working on the localization for the future approval.--Jiangxinese 13:58, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I'm also a contributor of Gan wiktionary. It's sure more work needs to be done, however, I hope you might understand it will be a little unrealistic for small wikis to complete the interface, since these projects even have not that many articles. The most-used MediaWiki messages have been all localized into Gan and I suppose it's sufficient for general use of the project. I have no idea if the localization of "all MediaWiki messages" and "main extensions used by Wikimedia Foundation wikis" has to be strictly accomplished before the creation, but I still wish the committee has a full consideration on the actual situation of many small wikis. Regards.--Symane 13:22, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I do understand that it is a lot of work to translate those two groups of messages, however that is how our policy is. We generally don't make exceptions to that. If you have a few contributors translating, you can do a lot of work. And if the translation activity is high, we can consider approving the wiki before it is completed, however I don't see many recent translations. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 03:28, 25 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your comprehension, yet I have to honestly say that this policy does not fit for the real situation. People will be glad to spend some time contributing several entries, but to translate thousands and thousands of interface messages is just excessively tedious and laborious. If wiki projects really aim to democratize the share of knowledge and develop as a multilanguage media, would you think it is possible to ask the Committee to modify this "policy"?--Symane 08:37, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I don't think I would be able to convince others, especially User:GerardM. I have already been able to reduce the amount of messages drastically, 1 or 2 years ago. Also, all wiki communities are intended to gradually continue translating the interface after their first wiki was created. Wiki communities should keep their translations up-to-date. I see there are now some 2.600 messages that need to be updated or translated. SPQRobin (talk) 02:32, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Half of all Wiktionaries even have not 2600 messages, anyway, I sincerely wish the community have a full, realistic consideration on non-mainstream languages, not to expect every writer to be Shakespeare as we call a calendar a "book". Thank you.--Symane 10:11, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Western Punjabi Wiktionary entry count edit

Can you explain why the content-page count for wikt:pnb: is showing 209 when you just imported over 3,000 entries into it 4 days ago? A spot-check of a dozen or so arbitrarily chosen entries show that they all have at least one link and one category. And besides, I coulda sworn it said 2,800-something just a few days ago (that's what I recorded over here), but by the time I started officially tracking its stats (with a program) yesterday, it was only showing 100-something (and then went above 200 today). I don't get it... - dcljr 03:18, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Same thing with the Veps Wikipedia, which was showing over 500 right after importing, but is now saying 8, even though you can easily find more than 8 articles that should be contributing to the article count. What am I missing here? - dcljr 03:28, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Robin, could you please help edit Belgium or know any female editor from Belgium? Meet up pictures, anything in Belgium? Format structure for the easy one, sample would be Algeria or complicated one would be Australia. Thanks Siska.Doviana 13:15, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Siska, I don't know much of the southern half, but for Flanders there are a few female editors but seldom meetups. I have added some links and info I could find, but I will keep the page in mind. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 14:23, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Robin, perhaps you could poke them and let them now that opportunity exist? Should they are interested to participate they need to contact Laura Hale Siska.Doviana 14:36, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request for Adminship at pnb.wiktionary, org edit

Mr. SPQRobin thankyou for helping in the creation of Punjabi Wiktionary. In order to manage the wiktionary better an admin is required. Kindly host an election or choose one. I suggest Khalid Mahmood for adminship as he started the project and contributed towards its development. Danish47 15:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, to elect an admin you should hold an election locally on pnb.wiktionary.org and then ask on SRP to grant him adminship. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 20:45, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposals for closing projects/Closure of meta-wiki edit

Hi, you closed Proposals for closing projects/Closure of meta-wiki within an hour of it being created, without explanation in the edit summaries, reference to the Closing projects policy, or even a courtesy note to the creator. I consider this extremely rude.

Now I understand that you're a member of LangCom, so per Closing_projects_policy#Decision the unexplained closure must be on the basis that the discussion will be "harmful". Can you please explain how the discussion will be "harmful"? Rd232 (talk) 17:34, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

A policy can be used for regular cases. In this case it makes no sense to consider the proposal. I find common sense of higher importance than what the policy says. SPQRobin (talk) 17:38, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
"In this case it makes no sense to consider the proposal." - how do you know what might come out of a discussion? At worst, it's harmless. At best, some ideas might come out of it. If it really looked like getting consensus on the page, then I'm sure it wouldn't take long to organise enough Metapedians to crush it. I find it extraordinary that you feel the right to so swiftly crush the discussion; although your attitude to policy is equally flabberghasting. Yes, when policy risks producing perverse results, we rely on en:WP:IAR (in spirit, if the letter doesn't exist on the local project) - but when policy merely risks producing discussion, we don't crush it because we personally think it cannot possibly produce anything useful. Sorry, but I think this is disgusting behaviour. PS sorry, I missed your closing Comment on the page itself - there was in fact an explanation, I just missed it. An inadequate explanation which is essentially an opinion you should have given in the Comments, but still. Rd232 (talk) 17:47, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Further, your closing comment says "Many global functions (blocking, rights, interwiki map, ...) require a central wiki. " but if those functions are tied to Meta at the back-end, I've yet to figure out how. For example, Interwiki map is a page that AFAIK can happily anywhere on the web, since it's merely a page to coordinate occasional updates to the interwiki table via a script. Similarly, blocking and rights coordination have very little technical restriction on being moved elsewhere, as far as I can tell. You have some involvement with interwiki extensions I see, so maybe you can clarify that part at least. Rd232 (talk) 18:09, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think this closure was inappropriate and the discussion should be allowed to run its course, and then closure by a cross-wiki triumvirate. Eraserhead1 (talk) 20:31, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

For the interwiki map, developers would have to update the URL which is not much work but this is one of many examples. Countless number of links would have to be updated, etc, etc (links in general to Meta). In addition, logged actions are in Meta's database so you would still need Meta if you want to look at past actions. Anyway, to be honest, I don't want to spend my time on this kind of endless discussions, so feel free to reopen (you have my OK word). You are right that discussion is harmless. SPQRobin (talk) 20:40, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Eraserhead1 (talk) 20:49, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Just how much work would really be involved should be part of that discussion. Obviously implementing the proposal would be quite a bit of work (!), but I think the overwhelming majority of links wouldn't be that much of a deal to update. Rd232 (talk) 21:17, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

About the "Proposals for new projects" process edit

Hello, Robin :)

I would like to have some of your advice about a topic I asked in the forum, here. MarcoAurelio said you have some knowledge about it, so that's why I'm here. Thanks in advance! --Racso ¿¿¿??? 22:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Racso. I'm only active on the requests for new languages. For the proposals for new projects, there are no rules at all. Most current projects stem from the early beginnings of Wiki(p|m)edia, Wikiversity being the newest (2006). If you want to start a new one, I guess it would be a good start to propose it on foundation-l. But I need to repeat, there are no rules. I think most projects that started were 'split' from existing ones, for content that was often added but was not appropriate for the existing ones. Rodovid does not really match that pattern, so if you ask me there is little chance. But you can try. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 00:45, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Assistance with WebFonts edit

Gday SPQRobin. At English Wikisource, I have been asked to implement some webfonts, and neither the extension page nor its associated help page really give me enlightenment about how to add components for a wiki, and wonder if you could either give me some hints or point out a wiki where it is nicely in place, and I can go and look and replicate. Thanks. billinghurst sDrewth 09:12, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I don't really see what you want information about exactly. I tried to give some info on Wikisource Scriptorium. It may be easier to continue there, or you could ask on IRC. SPQRobin (talk) 18:39, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I misunderstood the nature of the comment, I saw it as a request for admin doing, not a reflective comment. Ignorance of the subject matter was my undoing. Both yours and Gerald's comments, and possibly a new day all helped. :-) billinghurst sDrewth 06:37, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Loss of English layer at euwiktionary edit

Gday. I was visiting through euwiktionary, and find that (some of) the English layer for the left sidebar has disappeared when set to English as the language. I haven't checked for other languages. Is this something that is controlled at translatewiki, or is this something that euwiktionary has done or needs to be fixed elsewhere? These bits I remain clueless. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:37, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was a bit surprised at first about your question, since I don't have any relation to euwiktionary or related wikis at all, but anyway. So, for each definition in MediaWiki:Sidebar, the software looks if there's an interface message with that name and that message can have translations or not. The default sidebar includes such messages which can indeed be translated at translatewiki.net. On euwiktionary those messages were indeed replaced by hardcoded text (in 2008), of which I now changed some back to use messages (I hope they don't mind). Feel free to ask if you have more questions :) SPQRobin (talk) 17:15, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks mate. I know that you are not connected with euwikt, though around wiki base-setup, translation issues and the interrelationship I find that you are a font of knowledge and able to assist far better than others with a practical solution with that hint of additional learning. So thanks for this support and tolerance of my sponging on your good nature. If I wrote in shorthand, then it was probably late at night and my best attempt at sounding lucid and capturing the data point. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:47, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Always happy to help :) SPQRobin (talk) 18:59, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Latin-Cyrillic converter edit

Hello! Thank you for helping with Uzbek language projects. I've checked the converter on Wikiquote, it works neat. However, there are few problems:

  1. E/e should be rendered as Э/э if it is the first letter of a word, and е in other cases (temirтемир, but eskiэски).
  2. Yoʻ/yoʻ should be converted first as Йў/йў, and only then Yo/yoЁ/ё (yolёл, but yoʻlйўл).

Thanks again! Abdullais4u (talk) 11:12, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello! SPQRobin. I on translatewiki.net has done the translation uz-latn - lotincha, uz-cyrl - kirillcha, on most translatewiki.net already several days shows as it is necessary, but on uzbek wikipedia does not show. As this correct? --CoderSI (talk) 03:37, 26 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

How do you do, SPQRobin! Presently in uzbek wikipedia if we search for anything on cyrillic, transliterated to latin then find this quest. For this you many thanks. Possible not to take into account the word by length of one letter. This needs for cyrillic symbols. CoderSI (talk) 18:59, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

On new projects edit

Thanks for keeping an eye on the header for proposals for closing projects. I explained a bit more to Ningauble, and will try to get the LangCom charter formally approved - once we're done approving the new AffCom charter. Leaving only... ComCom and TransCom, neither of which submit requests or proposals to the Board. SJ talk  07:11, 20 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you for talking to Ningauble. Note that the LangCom charter itself doesn't include the CPP, so I assume you mean formally approving the CPP. I was also thinking the Board could formally approve it after SPCom approval, since its charter will make changes to the current CPP. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 15:35, 20 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

I wonder when is this request Requests for new languages/Wikinews Vietnamese is going to get granted? It has been like 2 years. The reason that not many people care about it is because it has not been officially open as Vietnamese Wikinews yet. It is just a test, it won't get attention from people. I think you need to create the real Vietnamese Wikinews for it to start to develop as the better rate than it is right now. And maybe one day, it can become a big Wikinews version.Trongphu (talk) 22:54, 24 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, we don't look at how long a request has been open, despite all the useless voting on the request page. What matters is how much activity there is on the Incubator test wiki. This is to ensure that it will stay active, because a lot of projects, certainly Wikinews, get inactive afterwards. It may not be as "official" as when having an own wiki, but it is still as open as a real wiki and anyone can and should contribute to it. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 02:38, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

About setting up automatic transliteration service for Azerbaijani Wikipedia edit

Regarding to this bug and this comment of yours, I am the developer of the AzConvert tool you mentioned there. Currently I have refactored its code and also ported it to php language (you can see a demo in here). I really want to finish this arab-latin problem on Azerbaijani wikipedia and I volunteer to work on this matter and cooperate for solving this problem. Your colleague (Hershberger) mentioned that a developer native in this language and familiar to the scripts and development is needed. Now how can I help in this matter? Or accurately, how can you help us get over this problem? Regards, موسا (talk)

I rewrite that I don't agree that "The main text on Latinas and Arabic only visually", because arabic part users don't understand latin script, and don't edit in latin articles. They live in South Azerbaijan and used arabic script for writen.)))Secondly, we are willing to open own Wikipedia for many of the issues (20072008 2009 2011 2012 & az:İstifadəçi müzakirəsi:Mehrdad/arxiv02& az:Vikipediya:Səsvermə/Bir viki iki əlifba) Thanks--Ebrahimi-amir (talk) 05:43, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes I agree with you, unlike before that I was against opening new wikipedia, now I support it. But by implementing this system, I want to make our fellow Turkic countrymen able to read the nearly 100000 articles in there. It's like the Kurdish wikipedia, which has two separate Wikipedias for both latic and arabic scripts, while the latic one has automatic convertor to arabic script. Regards, موسا (talk)

With gerrit:23994, you changed the size of the year field from four to seven characters. Was that a conscious decision or an oversight? I don't have an opinion on this matter myself, but just want to make sure. --Tim Landscheidt (talk) 01:25, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes it was intended, because I had the impression that using type="number" made the inputbox a bit smaller so I thought it would be better to have it a bit too large rather than a bit too small. SPQRobin (talk) 16:51, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Simple (language) Wikipedia edit

Hi, is the policy for creating a simple version of an already-existing wiki the same as the policy for any other language? If it isn't,what exactly is the policy? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tazerdadog (talk) 23:19, 20 ott 2012 (UTC)

We currently don't have any policy on it, but I think we would approve it if there is community support for it and the language has a kind of standard to define what can be a simple version, like fr:Français fondamental for French. The best way in my opinion to start such a simple version is by creating a dedicated namespace on the "parent" project, e.g. fr.wikipedia.org. Btw, please ask general questions on e.g. Talk:Langcom. Right. I've left a note almost a month ago on that commit, but no response yet. Any idea who should I contact? Bennylin 17:15, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
You can try to contact the i18n team via IRC #mediawiki-i18n, or via Translatewiki (translatewiki:Support or translatewiki:User talk:Siebrand or so). SPQRobin (talk) 02:47, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Can you help the way you helped bug.wp? Does extension deployment to WMF site has anything to do with translatewiki? (And it's been tested in TW for quite some months and ready for deployment). Bennylin 13:19, 26 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, the issue seems to be whether the font should load on the language code "jv" or "jv-java". The thing is that the Latin script seems to be much more common so in that case it might make sense to only load it for "jv-java", but it's up to you and the i18n team to decide that. Fundraising translation feedback edit

Hey SPQRobin,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Dutch using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Assistance with project closure proposal edit

Please take a moment to read Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Norwegian Wikinews 2. I think that the argument has exhausted itself. The project is also now not dead as an English Wikinews contributor is asking people from IRC to translate articles to Norwegian and the topic coverage is now recovering; the existing project community doesn't seem to hinder the progress. There is a claim about machine translations but it's so far a thing I see no detailed evidence or support of. I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the proposal and process it following the usual process, so it stops accepting votes. I am posting this message just to you as you are listed as a LangCom members dealing with project closures. Thanks. --Gryllida 13:49, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

English/Dutch translations edit

Dear SPQRobin, I am contacting you to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Robell and I have recently joined the Wikimedia Foundation as a part of the fundraising team. My work will be focused to a large extent around translations. I am very interested in finding engaged Wikipedians, such as yourself, who would be interested in contributing with their time to translate shorter messages from English to Dutch. We have for example recently put up a 'Thank you letter' from the Wikimedia Foundation's ED Sue Gardner for translation, using the translation extension. You can find the letter here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Fundraising%2FTranslation%2FThank+you+email+20131202&action=proofread&filter=translated&language=nl I would be most grateful to get your help to translate/proofread this letter in order to develop a quality translation in Dutch. Furthermore, in addition to using the translation extension, my aim is to develop a few personal contacts to whom I can reach out with potential questions regarding a particular word choice etc. As an engaged Wikipedia translator, I would be very interested in hearing your view on this.

Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Hello again! The Uzbek Latin-to-Cyrillic converter has been really useful for all of us. But sometimes we observe small glitches while using the converter. One problem has to do with the way the Latin letter E is rendered.

The Latin letter E/e should be rendered as:

  • Э/э (a) if it is the first letter of a word and (b) if it is written right after a vowel; for example, eski should be rendered as эски (case a) and duet should be rendered as дуэт (case b).
  • е in other cases; for example, temir should be rendered as темир.

Can this be corrected? Or would it be too difficult? It looks Abdullais4u (talk) has already asked for your help on this. Maybe you were too busy to take a loot at this issue back then. We'd be really happy if you could help us solve this problem. Thanks! Nataev (talk) 08:49, 25 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Sorry for my late or lacking replies :-) It seems to be working correctly when it's the first letter of a word, right? So it's just wrong when it's written right after a vowel. That can be more or less easily fixed by converting '[vowel]e' into '[vowel]э', which supersedes converting e to e. It may get tricky for vowels that already have such rules, e.g. 'yo' => 'ё'. Do you have certain vowels it mostly occurs, such as 'ue' => 'уэ'? Or is it all vowels? Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 04:07, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
All vowels: a, o, u, i, e and other symbols: ", ', -, +, @, ... and etc. Э does not show in the beginning of the paragraphs and then other characters --Xusinboy Bekchanov (talk) 11:48, 4 March 2014 (UTC).Reply
Easy way: can be replaced after consonants: "b", "v", "g", "d", "j", "z", "y", "k", "l", "m", "n", "p", "r", "s", "t", "f", "x", "c", "w", "q", "ʻ", "‘", "h" to "е", else to "э" --Xusinboy Bekchanov (talk) 12:02, 4 March 2014 (UTC).Reply
That's a good idea, I have submitted a changeset, so it should be working correctly on the Uzbek Wikipedia in ca. one or two weeks, depending on the review. SPQRobin (talk) 01:11, 5 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations! edit

Hello SPRobin,

On behalf of the stewards' election committee, congratulations on your election as a steward! Your permissions have now been set and you are able to start working.

You have been added to the list of stewards and the stewards' chart. Please take a moment to check that your details are accurate and update them if necessary.

You have been given access to the mailing lists related to your steward duties, which include: checkuser-l, the private mailing list for Wikimedia checkusers, stewards-l, the private list for stewards. In addition, you have been or will be given access to the related private wikis, one for checkusers and the other solely for stewards, details of which will be provided.

If you use IRC, you will be given access to several channels, including #wikimedia-checkuserconnect and #wikimedia-privacyconnect. Please also idle in #wikimedia-stewardsconnect when you are available for duty.

Best of luck with your new tools; I am sure you will do a fantastic job. Please remember that your fellow stewards are always available if you need a second opinion, either via the mailing list or on IRC.

Multilingual portal search edit

Hi, I remember that at some point you worked on the multilingual search for project portals (but perhaps it was removed). The closest bug report I found is bugzilla:24767 (context). --Nemo 07:20, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for notifying me. I worked on adding a search box to search for a wiki, i.e. to facilitate finding a wiki or starting one in a certain language. It still is/was on my todo list to work further on that. Bug 24767 is rather about searching content. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 11:23, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki edit

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Disabling upload for new wikis edit

Hello, is this old proposal of yours something the LangCom could be interested in making part of the new wiki creation process? Could be a patch to the addwiki script or something. --Nemo 12:24, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Current local uploads are enabled by default. My goal is/was to have it disabled by default, for which the discussion should ideally be revived (Local uploads policy, Requests for comment/Disable local uploads on smaller wikis, ...). What I already changed quite some time ago in the wiki creation process is that we ask the community of a new wiki whether they actually want to have it enabled, rather than assume it and have it enabled by default. So each bug includes a "Enable uploads: yes/no". SPQRobin (talk) 13:19, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I guess that works, with current policy. I'm looking into reviving Local uploads policy after getting some insight on which wikis are actually using local uploads and how. --Nemo 13:27, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Great! This is something that should really get done. I'll try to follow it up. SPQRobin (talk) 15:18, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

I linked your tool from my list, but I just found out I can't use it because in some cases it's not complete, for instance ar.n has the message but empty and ar.wikt is not in the tool at all (right now). --Nemo 12:34, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

About ar.wikt: I filtered out the databases that don't have "wiki", but obviously that also filters out Wiktionaries :-S Changed it now to "wik". About e.g. ar.news: having an empty message will have the same behavior as not having the message, so it is indeed affected as my tool says. SPQRobin (talk) 19:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Latin/Cyrillic Converter (Again!) edit

Hello Robin! How are you these days? For some reason the Latin/Cyrillic converter on the Uzbek Wikipedia has stopped properly converting the names of buttons and TOCs. We didn't use to have this problem before. Take a look at this page for example. As you can see, the converter is either simply displaying English words (Read, Edit, etc.) or converting into Latin English words, not Uzbek words (Contents > "Cонтенц"). Do you have any idea why we're experiencing this problem? Nataev talk 10:15, 23 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nodir! I actually caused this problem apparently, by fixing another bug. I added missing variantname messages. The language converter works in a really strange way. It would be fixed again by adding fallbacks, but Siebrand wants to move the uz messages to uz-latn, which requires some work. In any case, I'm certainly aware of it and it's on my todo list. See the relevant bugs 42420 and 42397. SPQRobin (talk) 12:52, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hello again! Thank you very much for responding! I took a look at the bugs but honestly they don't make much sense to me. :D I guess we will just wait. Let me know if I can be of any help. Nataev talk 08:59, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

The request page says that it has been verified, but I don't find anything in the langcom archives about a content verification, so that still has to be done. It would also be better to have more active editors. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 14:15, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Help decide the future of Wikimania edit

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

Dear SPQRobin,

As you probably know, the confirmation discussions for Stewards have been closed. In order to determine the outcome of these discussions, you are invited to comment on Talk:Stewards/Confirm/2016 before scheduled closure of the confirmation section "one week after the appointment of the newly elected stewards" (Sunday 6th of March, 17:22 UTC), though the closing time might be extended at the ElectCom's discretion for an extra week if it is believed "further input is required before concluding". Tunisian Arabic edit

As shown in the new edition of Ethnologue, Tunisian Arabizi (One of the Latin Scripts used for Tunisian) has been recognized as a common script for Tunisian Arabic. I have created a script converter for Tunisian Arabizi and I will implement it with explanations very soon. However, I need to test it before. See global sysops; it can be useful from time to time. SPQRobin (talk) 18:13, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Polish wiki edit

HI, does global sysop work on polish wiki? Pyrusca (talk) 19:35, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, no it does not, as it opted-out from global sysop: Special:WikiSets/7. SPQRobin (talk) 21:00, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
It does work on Polish language Wikinews and Polish language Wikivoyage, though. --Vogone (talk) 12:44, 25 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Code for incubator:Special:SearchWiki edit

Members of test communities starting to get close to approval have been asking why their language is not included in the search. Is this hard-coded somewhere, or is there a data depot somewhere that it draws from? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:02, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @StevenJ81:. The dropdown list shows only languages that are included in MediaWiki (same as on e.g. Special:Preferences). But the search should work for most languages. The code for the special page is here btw. But it's been a long time since I created the special page. Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 22:53, 19 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Robin. The specific problem is with kbp (Kabɩyɛ), at least, though there might be others, too. It was just marked eligible at RFL, and in fact Langcom is starting to look for language experts toward a possible approval. On translatewiki.net, there is a portal page for the language. But...it doesn't show any active translators. Then if you follow the link from there to translatewiki:Special:SupportedLanguages/kbp#kbp, the language does not appear in the "word cloud". But it appears at the bottom, with a translator's name. I'm going to nose around both phabricator and translatewiki support and see what I can find. Any other thoughts you have would be a help. Li.wb edit

SPQRobin (talk) 10:53, 25 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Dat klopt ja. Ik wens u alvast veel wijsheid voor :P --OosWesThoesBes (talk) 13:59, 25 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I would like to know if you can activate the Guianese Wikipedia project, and please do not discuss it with another administrator, because I think I have sent too many messages; they do not want to answer any more, please, I did all that I was asked to do for this project, Check by yourself, it has been a year since I am told that they will activate it and create officially the Guianese Wikipedia, but they have not done anything so far, so please activate this project because it's really important for me, but it has also developed in me a huge stress, I think about it all the time and it drives me crazy to tell me that they will never approve of it, even though I did everything as they asked, please Create the Guianan Wikipedia! At least for a trial period, if you want just 3 months, but created the SVP, it's really important for me! LeGuyanaisPure (talk) 13:24, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

This is a bizarre thing with no scope that shouldn't exist. Information '''''on''''' a dead language makes sense, information '''''in''''' a dead language does not. The fact that it is rarely used is not part of my reasoning, rather that should be counted as blessing. The less people that see this thing, the better

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

More information, and registration details, at QW2021.--Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group 15:46, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

Dear SPQRobin,

How is your day going? I don't mean to take so much of your time. I raised a little issue on Babylon's Talk and would be so lucky to have you help out. Thank you Danidamiobi (talk) 22:18, 22 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Latin-Arabic converter for uzwiki edit

Hi, Robin! How are you doing? We were wondering if we can add a Latin-Arabic converter to uzwiki. I don't know beans about the Arabic script, but from what I've read so far, it seems to be extremely complicated, with different characters used for the same sound based on its position in a given word.

I wonder if there's an easier way to do it. The Kazakh Wikipedia already has this feature. Maybe the Kazakh and Uzbek Arabic alphabets are not too dissimilar. Do you know if there's a comparative table of Latin and Arabic characters for the Kazakh language? I've found this source code, but don't really know how to use it. Thanks, man! Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference edit

Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.

Registration for the online event is free and is open until Wednesday May 10th at 18:00 UTC, for safety protocol. Late event registration approval and event access denial is at the discretion of organizers.

More information, and registration details, may be found on Meta at QW2023
