Removal of globally banned users' signature

User:MCC214 recently removed multiple users' signature on a usergroup (say, Wikipedians of Mainland China) members page, the reason 'they are globally banned' was given in editing summary. I rollbacked it and my rollback was rollbacked again. I think these signatures should not be removed, please convince the user not to do so. --39.149.32.220 04:29, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

I suggest to discuss this topic in Talk:Wikimedians_of_Mainland_China/Members#元维基的WMC成员列表 (or Talk:Wikimedians_of_Mainland_China) and should be internally discussed by Wikimedians of Mainland China members and liaisons. Inactive bots

As per policy, bots which are inactive (edits/log actions) for 14 consecutive months will have the bot flag removed. The following bots have lapsed the stipulated time period for them to retain the flag.

Bots or their operator(s) have been notified on their respective talk pages. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 08:43, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

While I do not strictly need bot flag for BaseBot at this very moment, unless there are objections I would prefer to keep the flag so that whenever I do need to use it I don't hit low API limits and other downsides of regular accounts. --Base (talk) 08:48, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
@Base: (and any other operator on this list) - think we can give this a week to see if these are still needed by replying here - but also make at least a trivial edit with your bot (even it's own userpage) so that it doesn't keep coming up for review every month please. — xaosflux Talk 10:21, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Yes, my bad for not mentioning this, policy states a 1 week holding period. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 11:12, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Request for patroller

Hi there! I'm here to request the patroller permission, mainly for the rollback. I've recently become more active in cross-wiki RC patrol again, and rollback here would be useful (for example, yesterday I undid edits by Lazaduckgun: 1, 2, 3). I think I'm trusted enough for this; while I don't have tons of experience on Meta, I'm much more active on English Wikipedia, and I have rollback there and on Wikidata. Thanks! (Note: If you assign the patroller permission, you can remove the autopatrol permission because it's redundant.) Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:58, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Block for Naleksuh

Naleksuh (talk · contribs)
Computer Fizz (talk · contribs)
Krett12 (talk · contribs)

Naleksuh has made a very consistent pattern of casting aspersions without supplying proof and making personal attacks. Since they have been publicly connected to their previous invalid CLEAN START accounts (invalid because the accounts had overlap, even interacting with himself). I am a meta sysop, but as I was attacked by Naleksuh last year, I will ask for another meta sysop to take a look and consider a block. Operator873 connect 19:50, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

This post is entirely wrong. There has not been casting aspersions, as all claims are backed up. The first diff is from a year ago, and in that case proof WAS provided both to ElectCom and in the form of snippets. In the second, more recent, one, I have provided proof on the talk page, where I have supplied proof of my claims and shown a users response to my question to be wrong. Also, the link of "interacting with myself" does not depict me interacting with myself. The account being replied to is "Kill switch 1999", which is not me. You do not appear to be trying to suggest it is me either as it is not on your list. This is yet more false information. This should be thrown out both for provably false claims (like "interacting with myself" when I didn't) or even consider a block for the filer per w:WP:BOOMERANG. Naleksuh (talk) 19:53, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
I'll withdraw the interaction, but the diff still supports both Krett12 and Computer Fizz being active at the same time, there for invalid CLEAN START and abusing multiple accounts to evade scrutiny. Operator873 connect 20:03, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

Request for patroller

Hi, I would like to request patroller rights at metawiki to be able to also patrol revisions (which I for example encounter during counter-vandalism work and where the rollback tool cannot be used). I am familiar with the tools the patroller permission provides (as a global rollbacker and -sysop). In case there would be any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks in advance, Daniuu (talk) 01:11, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Community Wishlist Survey proposal identified as spam

I clicked the banner on Wikipedia that invited me to create a proposal for the Community Wishlist Survey 2022, and I decided to create a proposal in the watchlists category (the only thing I did was filling in the template), but when I clicked publish it was identified as spam. The description of the rule was the very helpful «Antispam». I'm not sure what triggered it, I'm guessing it's the repeated all caps "DO NOT EDIT ABOVE THIS LINE" but in that case I'd expect other people to also not be able to create proposals. Or maybe it's that I don't have any contributions on the meta wiki? Jochem van Hees (talk) 15:05, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Update: it was indeed the all caps, because after I removed it I was able to publish the page. Either the rule or the proposal template should probably be fixed. Jochem van Hees (talk) 15:09, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
The all caps wasn’t why the filter was triggered. It’s a very targeted filter, but unfortunately has a decent amount of false positives. It shouldn’t be an issue for you in the future, though. Vermont (talk) 15:19, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
I am still not enamoured with that filter. I have put in another exclusion test.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:29, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Request for uploader

Hello :) I occasionally would like to upload images to Meta -- for instance a photo of Luis B-E to illustrate the Board article (while we wait on getting a properly licensed one). I'm requesting uploader permissions to do this. –SJ talk  15:25, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

@Sj: Unlicensed or non-free files are not allowed on Meta, nor is fair use per community consensus. I'd prefer if you uploaded the picture to Commons when one exists with proper licensing. Thanks, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 15:28, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Do we need local files (or uploaders) at all, so long as there is no EDP? Are there any file formats that we allow that Commons does not? I'd like to see a simple EDP to support meta work, so that we can host aggregations of knowledge from other movement wikis -- or if not an EDP, implementing something like InstantCommons that supports a cascading list of movement-wikis for resolving File: references. But until then I'll push for freely licensed versions. –SJ talk  18:54, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
The only instances of local uploads that were needed recently were to mirror some logos used in the portals for security purposes. Since we disabled local uploads in 2015 or so, there has been no need for local uploads. Still the mess of files without source, license, descriptions, etc. remains. I don't think it is a good idea to allow local uploads and increase the number of potential copyright infringements we're hosting. EDPs and Fair Use require active monitoring too, something that evidently we lack; therefore I oppose any EDP for Meta. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:59, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

Canvassing at RFC

Requests for comment/Stop accepting cryptocurrency donations is currently experiencing abnormally high levels of canvassing by crypto proponents due to advertisement on crypto promotion platforms. Although I imagine meta has different conventions on canvassing than some of the Wikipedias, at the level it’s currently at surely this doesn’t help build a consensus and is a problem. Admin intervention, perhaps semi-protection, might be appropriate? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 14:58, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

The last five commenters (all opposers) are all legitimate accounts, the youngest of them is 4 years old, so I'm not sure what semi-protection would achieve. --MF-W 15:06, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

I wrote at the talk page of the HeWP bureaucrat Dovno about his supporting in a declared troll, but Dovno did not reply, nor deleted the "dead horse" phrase which he wrote. It is evident that the troll keeps writing at every page of the HeWP, although it has been blocked there indefinitely. Its trolling is like here, and its identity is here, here, here and here. It has a personal issue with me, and used fake identities, like here, here, here and here, although the real lawyer is here, and has less to deal with the HeWP. Its identity is also here. As Dovno fully supports it, requesting to block me from the HeWP due to reporting SRG about this troll, an RFC should be made.
If Dovno does not want an RFC, he has to remove his phrase, the reaction of the troll and allow me to write in my user space and its subpages. DgwTalk 15:02, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@Tslajack4hrs: Hi, it seems that you are affected by a global block and therefore needs a WP:IPBE/GIPBE flag to continue editing. Please request for one by creating a section on SRGP or see en:WP:IPECPROXY (if you only intends to edit enwiki). NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 02:42, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

He/she adds strange translations. Also, how can I revert translation vandalism? --魔琴 (talk) 09:53, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

@魔琴: Thanks, I've deleted the vandalism. Reverting translation vandalism is not straightforward. You'll have to go to the user contributions and revert the contributions in the Translations: namespace. Reverting directly from the translatable page is not possible. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:37, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: Yeah, but if someone created a Translations: page with vandalism, I am not able to revert it. What should I do? I can't tag the page for speedy deletion, can I? --魔琴 (talk) 10:43, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
@魔琴: Yes, you may tag the Translations: page with {{delete}}. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:46, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

I found that users with rollback right (patrollers and global rollbackers) may rollback an edit on this page. Although the issue seems to be minimal, the page may be fully protected or a new protection level may be introduced to protect the page.--GZWDer (talk) 14:28, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

I should not be editable by non-sysops or non-global renamers per Special:AbuseFilter/293. Maybe rollback is not parsed as action=edit for abusefilter, and therefore gets ignored? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
See phab:T262157. GZWDer (talk) 14:34, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure how to fix this then. We'd like that page to be editable by admins, stewards and global renamers. Introducing a new protection level for just one page seems overkill to me. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:37, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
I don't see it needs "fixing" on-wiki for this edge case - T262157 can address eventually. If rollbackers start abusing this we can just revoke their access or block them. It still stops them from "editing" it normally. — xaosflux Talk 14:52, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, per Xaosflux, we can remove the GR or patroller right if it is abused in this way. I don't see a need to change the protection as the issue is limited in scope. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 07:52, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Can someone please make this script a gadget and turn it on by default so as to give users like me a chance to turn it off via Special:Preferences? It seems to be incompatible with QuickEdit. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 03:15, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Meta-wiki mass message sender permission needed

I made a thread for this at Steward_requests/Permissions#JPxG, and was told to come here. Basically, the deal of it is this: I just sent out the January edition of the Signpost on the English Wikipedia, and the script gave me an error (

Mass-messaging global subscribers... Skipped. Failed (API error: permissiondenied)

). As far as I can tell, what this means is that I need to be a MassMessage sender on meta-wiki. If so, I'd like to have this permission (I have it on enwiki and can link to relevant details if necessary). If there is an additional process here, I am willing to go through it as well. JPxG (talk) 21:52, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

@JPxG: I notice your enwiki flags are mostly temporary, is this a short-term thing you are doing? — xaosflux Talk 22:01, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
It was when I did it the first time back in November, but I plan to be available for publishing future editions as well -- so I will probably request an extension of the permissions there. JPxG (talk) 22:07, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
Actually, now that I look more closely at the target list, it seems that this is a global permission, not just a meta-wiki one. Should I move this request to Steward requests/Global permissions? JPxG (talk) 22:38, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
@JPxG Nope, for Meta mass message senders, this is the correct venue to request the right. The meta mass message sender flag (MMS) lets you to send messages to subscribers on all wikis, but the flag is still granted locally, at Meta, by Meta's admins (who don't need to be stewards). We should process your request for the MMS flag here.
You mention a script gave you an error. Do you mind sharing the details of the script? Also, is there a page that designates you as one of the people who should be distributing the Signpost?
Looking forward to your answers, Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:51, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
The script in question is en:wp:User:JPxG/SPS.js, which incorporates a variety of features (on en.wp it edits a bunch of pages, creates some, moves others, and sends a MassMessage). The function that specifically sends the global mass-message is here, which does data.metaApi.postWithEditToken({action: 'massmessage', assert: 'user', spamlist: msg_spamlist, subject: msg_subject, message: msg_top + msg_mid + msg_bottom}); where spamlist is Global message delivery/Targets/Signpost. As for official approval, the editor-in-chief is Smallbones, who could confirm this on this talk page or elsewhere (I suppose you could check at en:wp:Wikipedia_talk:Wikipedia_Signpost/Newsroom as well). JPxG (talk) 22:56, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the details. Generally, I'm fine with the permissions granted to you, but given the enwiki permission look to be granted to send out a single issue of the Signpost (which was already done -- both locally at enwiki and globally from Meta), I'll wait for confirmation/clarification by @Smallbones before proceeding with granting the MMS flag. Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:18, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: I fully endorse JPxG for sending mass messages on meta for The Signpost for as long as he'd like to do it. Smallbones (talk) 02:33, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec --MdsShakil (talk) 16:53, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder.   Done for six months (happy to prolong later, assuming you'll still need the permissions). Martin Urbanec (talk) 17:09, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
