They are continuing to self promote despite the userpage being deleted, see their talk page history. This user reverted Tulsi's warning with the same promotional material. A case of an account only here to self promote (I think this user tried the same thing in en.wiki and was deleted, so maybe a glock might be warranted). —Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 15:42, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Logging in to alswiki

I know it says meta-only, but I have to report an error on alswiki. Plus, I don't speak Alemannic German, so it would be harder to get a response. I could not log in to alswiki and I see an unexpected message:

Auto-creation of a local account failed: This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Inappropriate username

How is AJ1m3,zsd. an inappropriate username? Even if it is, it should have stopped me from creating this account in the first place. I believe this message is in error and would like it removed. But the problem is I cannot log in to alswiki and I would like help. --AJ1m3,zsd. (talk) 03:31, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Somebody created this but it is blocked in Japanese Wikipedia as a sockpuppet.--GZWDer (talk) 05:06, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Indeed the creator seems to be community banned in ja.wikipedia for WP:CIR and WP:DISRUPTIVE issues, as well as refusing to listen. The user seems to be doing the same unproductive edits as in jawiki (ref.) and the BRfA has no way it would pass. Hi!

Can a sysop replace current Template:Feedback page with a real import of mw:Template:Feedback in order to upgrade it and to better credit its authors, please? --Pols12 (talk) 02:40, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

@Pols12 Sorry we are unable to do so as mediawiki isn't a default import source here, we need a copy-paste in this case. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 11:42, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Given the plans to use mediawiki.org as a hub for modules (mw:Multilingual Templates and Modules) it might be worth adding as an import source though - thoughts? DannyS712 (talk) 15:50, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
I will support adding mediawiki. Babel discussion and a phab ticket I guess will be needed? Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 16:45, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
wmf:Terms_of_Use/en#7._Licensing_of_Content says that hyperlinking to the source is enough, and that when importing text "it is sufficient to give attribution in the edit summary, which is recorded in the page history". Do we really need to import foreign revids? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:47, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it is sufficient, and no, an import here is not required. --MF-W 11:57, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pols12: Seems that no import is needed, hence, could you just follow what MarcoAurelio suggest, copy-paste from mediawiki with proper attribution, i.e. maybe give the permalink of the mediawiki page in the summary when copying? Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 17:59, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

WCNA 2020: Live reload JavaScript

For the conference, we anticipate the main page (with the schedule) changing quite frequently, so I imagine a script that reloads the current page every so often would be useful (we could then link to the main page with the withJS parameter set). I have written a script at testwiki:MediaWiki:Live-reload.js, and I request that a Meta interface administrator would copy it over to MediaWiki:Live-reload.js on this wiki. The live-reload interval is given by LIVE_RELOAD_INTERVAL_IN_MINUTES at the top, and is 1, although I could happily increase it if server load were a concern. Enterprisey (talk) 03:55, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Doing... discussing some concerns about the script on IRC, then will copy over DannyS712 (talk) 04:11, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
  Done DannyS712 (talk) 04:30, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
DannyS712, seems like the render endpoint will also send down another copy of the translate banner, so we either need to get rid of that or the existing one each time; I went with the latter at the testwiki version. Enterprisey (talk) 04:54, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

WCNA 2020: Temporary interface administrator

I anticipate making several more edit requests related to the ongoing WikiConference North America/2020, both to MediaWiki:Live-reload.js, and another script to show the current events on the conference schedule. To avoid spamming edit requests (some perhaps at least a little time-sensitive), I would like to request the interface administrator permission for the next two days (until the end of the conference, 22:00 UTC on the 13th of December). I'm not putting this at WM:RFA because I assume those are open for a week, which would be pointless, but feel free to move it if that's a more appropriate venue. Enterprisey (talk) 00:33, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Some thoughts:
  • Enterprisey is an interface administrator on enwiki, and has shown themselves to be a competent script author who I believe can be trusted to both know what they are doing and, if granted the rights, not abuse them
  • Meta:Interface administrators#Requesting interface adminship says that "Non-administrators shall file a request for interface adminship. The process is the same as for a normal request for adminship. (Cf. Meta:Administrators#Policy for requesting adminship"
  • Meta:Administrators#Policy for requesting adminship has a subsection for exceptions, saying "It is helpful for some people to have access to protected pages on Meta (related to languages files)." and giving two options. I understand the "related to language files" part to be an example of such a case, and not the only time an exception is appropriate. The two options given are unprotecting the pages in question, which is not a possibility here, and "Temporary sysoping of the user so they can edit the protected pages. In this case, the adminship shall be granted with no requirements and approval, but the user will promise to limit their activity to the necessity of their local project. Preferably, the admin status will be temporary." which I believe might be appropriate here. Specifically, I endorse granting Enterprisey temporary limited interface administrator rights with the following conditions:
    1. The rights may only be used to edit scripts in the mediawiki namespace related to the ongoing WikiConference
    2. Those scripts may not be active by default (i.e. should follow the model of live-reload of being enabled via the useJS feature)
  • I recognize that this is essentially uncharted territory, but I think granting these rights for two days to Enterprisey based on exceptions to the normal adminship process shouldn't be a big problem.
--DannyS712 (talk) 01:01, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
I personally support that. Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:37, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Is this still needed? 2200 UTC is approaching already. --MF-W 17:08, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Closing as moot, since the conference should be over by now. @Enterprisey: next year if you anticipate a similar situation, I suggest filing a normal request for interface adminship ahead of time. --DannyS712 (talk) 17:58, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Request to be added to "MassMessage senders"

On December 17th I was elected in the board of WM-IT (see vice-president here) and I was appointed for liasions with italian on-line community. I need to be gvien rights of "MassMessage sender" in order to be able to send messages to users who have accepted to be informed about WM-IT communications on various wiki-proiects in italian and in other local languages of the italian peninsula. Thank you.--Ysogo (talk) 20:55, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

@Ysogo Could you please share an example message and list of users you would like to use for your mailing? Martin Urbanec (talk) 20:56, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec. The type of messages are mainly invitations to event organized by WM-IT (here are some examples of messages that I received from a former WM-IT board member: invitation to WP anniversary celebration, invitation to join a brainstorming session on movement strategy). Examples of lists to be used are the ones present in those categories: it.wikipedia, it.wikivoyage. --Ysogo (talk) 10:11, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ysogo Sadly, none of those messages are prepared by yourself. Furthermore, the lists you shared can only by used by local it.wikipedia/it.wikivoyage mass message senders (by default, administrators; local communities may ask for a local mass message senders group to be enabled) – members of the Meta MassMessage senders group can send a message to all wikis, but they need to use local meta lists for that.
To help me assess your access request, I would like to see a prepared message you would like to send out (for instance, in your user sandbox), and a target list you would like to use for that message. Both of those things need to be presented as a link to a meta.wikimedia page. Could you please read the MassMessage guidelines, and submit a message and list you would like to use?
Thank you for your understanding, Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:20, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec:I used examples of previous board member because I will send messages of the same type (i.e. invitations to WM-IT events), anyway here you can find a work-in-progress draft of the communication for next Wikipedia anniversary in a Sandbox of mine. About the lists, there is lists for WM-IT, such as: Wikimedia_Italia/User_contact/WLM-10.--Ysogo (talk) 21:26, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Granted for a year. Please re-request after that if you still need the permissions after then. Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:42, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Edit warring by Verdy p

Hi,

@Verdy p: is starting (again) a edit war on Translations:Tech/News/2020/52/9/fr(see history). He reverted 3 different user (@Thibaut120094 and Mathis B: and myself), this is going nowhere and he refuses to talk.

I think he is wrong about the content itself (we need non-breaking space in timedate) but it's no really important ; more importantly, he's refusal to talk about it is very wrong, he is actually forbidden everyone else to edit the page he edited.

About the comments (in French) :

  • « mauvaise interprététation et invention TOTALE de ta part » / transl. misinterpretation and TOTAL invention on your part
    • I don't see how it's misinterpreted or invented when it gives our exact case as the first example!
  • « J'ai lu mais c'est une mauvaise source mal interprétée. » / transl. I have read but it is a bad source misinterpreted.
  • Cela a été validé avant par au moins une douzaine d'utilisateurs (et des centaines milliers de fois dans plein de traductions et dans Wikipédia), le passage en force ici n'est pas de moi ! / This has been validated before by at least a dozen users (and hundreds of thousands of times in lots of translations and in Wikipedia), the forceful passage here is not mine!
    • Not sure it has "been validated" (where?), some others trnaslation and for sure Wikidata does put non-breaking space in some date and the date template (fr:Modèle:Date) does put a nowrap class to avoid breaking the date.

But as I said, the most annoying is his general behaviour et stubborn attitude. It's not the first time that we need to revert him (here or on others projets, he has been blocked for that in the past), he refuses to talk and when he finally does he reverse the burden of proof. Exactly like in this case, he is the one who changed the original translation (without comment) and he is the one who should give proof. Meanwhile, Mathis B and Thibaut120094 gave proofs but Verdy p still don't listen and just dismiss them... (see supra). In the end, his version "wins" (which IMHO is a "lost" for the community), just because he wears out everyone else.

Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 12:07, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I support this request, and I just want to add that there is a talk (in French) on frwiki text formatting policy talk page, with a consensus against Verdy p's opinion, but it seems he doesn't take care of it. Regards, Mathis B (talk) 12:18, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Done I blocked Verdy p for 24 hours for edit warring. Three revert rule is a traditional part of every wiki's policy suite, and considering Verdy's experience at other projects, they should know that. If 3RR was a formal Meta policy, it would be violated, which is why I decided to block. Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:36, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Abusefilter against RNL subpage creation by IPs

Requests for new languages have been plagued for months, if not years, by one or several anonymous editors who think it somehow makes sense to create requests which will then lie around stale for years, as they have no interested community behind them. When I find them, I usually delete them as I consider them non-serious. As RNL itself is semiprotected, it sometimes happens that an account like Special:Contribs/Alfred Gonzalez exists just to add the new requests to the list. Anyway, I would appreciate fellow admins' comments on whether:

  • it makes sense to create an abuse filter to stop IPs creating RNLs
  • it makes sense to create an abuse filter to monitor all RNL creations

or if there's a better way to achieve this which I'm not seeing here. --MF-W 18:23, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

IMHO #1 makes sense; unsure about #2. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:35, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
Crafted Special:AbuseFilter/269 which I guess is ugly and crappy and can be enhanced. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:51, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
Pings to Daimona and MusikAnimal for review of the above. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:29, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: LGTM, a few minor improvements I can think of: replacing user_age=0 with !("user" in user_groups); unsure about the new_size condition (it's quite rare to create an empty page, but I guess it might be changed to new_size > 0 which is IMHO clearer); removing the final .* from the regexp, being optional, it won't affect the match. But again, these are just minor suggestions, the filter should already be working as expected. --Daimona Eaytoy (talk) 12:18, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
@Daimona Eaytoy: Thanks. I have implemented your suggestions and tried to swap some rules up and down to see if I could "short-circuit" the filter and improve its performance/condition consumption; but it is not getting better. I'd expect this simple filter not to spend more than a condition and it's currently at 1.6. Is that okay? Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:07, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Titleblacklist could do the similar - just semiprotection though. My understanding is if created by autoconfirmed, TBL won't block edits from anon editors, but I'm not sure.
Requests for new languages\/.* <autoconfirmed|errmsg=titleblacklist-forbidden-rnl>

Yes, but MF-W wants to prevent only unregistered contributors and that seems not possible with TBL. Re my efficiency concerns: I moved (page_prefixedtitle contains "Requests for new languages/") on top and it now consumes just one condition instead of two. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:22, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
