Welcome to Meta!Edit

Hello, WikiBayer. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Happy editing!

Globall rollbackerEdit

Welcome! Please feel free to ask any question you have and be careful when reverting :). Matiia (talk) 22:35, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Please don't edit war with vandalsEdit

If we have these goofballs undoing edits, then it is usually better to get them blocked prior to reverting them. Having a undo revert war is pointless and noisy, it is also feeding the trolls.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:22, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your supportEdit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), we are asking your help for Chinese, Ukrainian, Bengali, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Farsi, German, Cantonese, Finnish, Hindi, Thai, Dutch, and Greek, as these also matter to affiliates! If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 21:35, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

Problem: Du findest etwas, z. B. in warWP.

Hello WikiBayer. I note that your Meta-Wiki signature does contain Benutzer Diskussion: which is not a recognized namespace on Meta. You may wish to change it to User talk: so it points to this talk page. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 12:33, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

About global blocksEdit

So they can be unblocked globally? I was confused. Please answer? Gale5050 (talk) 15:56, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

@Gale5050:Local blocks are local and have nothing to do with global / crosswiki projects. A global unblock is a unblocked of a global block and and has nothing to do with local blockages.--𐐎ℹ𝕜ⅈ𝕭𝒂𝕪ⅇ𝕣 👤💬 16:09, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Congratulations, Dear Administrator!Edit

Congratulations, WikiBayer! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta. Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe the metawiki admins private mailing list. Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:49, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Please noEdit

Please don't touch the offensive usernames. Less log == GOOD. — regards, Revi 18:02, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Now that I've sorted out, this means that - (at least while I am around) please don't touch with offensive usernames mentioning me. That helps me by sorting them out immediately, so there's less logs to clean up. Thanks, and sorry since this might sound bit harsh. — regards, Revi 18:14, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

User talk:BarryBoggsideEdit

Just fyi, but when you protected this talk page (many thanks for doing so though!) you left a block notice on it; but that notice was actually placed by an IP, not by Billinghurst. I assumed the IP was BB logged out, although why they would want that notice I've no idea. All the best! ——SerialNumber54129 10:53, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

I've just seen the section above—congratulations on your shiney new mop :) ——SerialNumber54129 10:54, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks to Billinghurst responding to the ping, the page should cause no further drama. Thanks both! ——SerialNumber54129 11:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

What are you DOING???? This is not within your athority as a global syso. Dont' just fullfil some interface-request by an outsider that doesn't know shit about tyhe project without consulting with local sysops first! This needs to be reverted! Seb az86556 (talk) 06:25, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

See request on SRM These are important links from MediaWiki. Removing these links will affect operation.
GS, Stewards and Global Interface Administrators are also authorized to make changes that fix impairments in the operation of the Mediawiki software.
Serious processing of the surface is generally not permitted without community consensus. Since this code represents an impairment, I assume that you wrote this code single-handedly at the time.--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 06:39, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
A local sysop asked you to not make changes at their wiki, that is a completely reasonable request and you should give that request due consideration, not just apparently dismiss it. Your changes to their common.css page were uncommented in both the edit summary and the talk page, and nothing on their general VP with any reference to [[SRM]. Would that be suitable at your home wiki? So, to me, the criticism is fully and duly delivered. Your response seems tone deaf, and dismissive, and that is not how global sysops should or seen to be acting to that wiki's admins. Please could you reflect on your approach; we work as a team. Global sysop is not a free pass, and really we should be doing more rather than less documentation when we act.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:11, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Urk, I misspoke, you did have a link to the SRM permalink, though suggest more overt something targeted to the section. I retract that part of the criticism.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:16, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Looking at the original request, why was it not directed to the wiki itself, it had admins, why would a global sysop undertake that action rather than suggest to the requester to ask locally first?  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:22, 25 June 2020 (UTC) This case has already been resolved elsewhere. This was an interface editing that a local user could not do. It is about very important controls of the MediaWiki where hiding is very annoying for everyone..--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 15:06, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Title blacklistEdit

I believe that your changes to the title blacklist today were premature. There was no urgent requirement for a change, where a discussion about a long term regex could take place. As admins here it is our job to implement a consensus, some determined from previous discussion, some following discussions now. Can I ask that you please take adequate time in decision-making, not acting unilaterally just because someone asks. Where a wiki requires an immediate remedy, they have complete control through local tools to make whichever exclusions they like. Point them to those tools, and allow a discussion to continue and a decision with understood consequences to take place.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:54, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

The reason I removed this one RegEx prevents articles from people that exist in multiple wikis (large and medium sized). Thus, this regex is generally an obstacle for other projects that translate the articles. For the further RegEx I have informed the deWiki admins of the possibility of an entry in the title whitelist.-𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 00:28, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

@Billinghurst:To the blacklist entry: The title blacklist entries also interfere with good contributions and has been ineffective against the abuse of the troll for about 1 year, as it always creates them with wrong titles. These entries are better to combat with the global abuse filter that analyzes the content.--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 15:06, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Removal of my old usernameEdit

My old username can be linked to sensitive information and that is why I changed it. Could you please delete the page and stop reverting my deletion request?

Best regards

--NoFWDaddress(d) 16:18, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Your old username cannot be deleted completely. Name changes are always noted in all projects in the logbook and the forwarding to the discussion is required so that the links on other pages continue to work.--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬
Hello WikiBayer. A simple explanation like this one whould have been welcomed.
I understand your point. But deleting the talk page will reveal the rename (since the log is diplayed) while sending a 404 to the web browser, so that it doesn't get archived by search engines (See this page for example).
This would allow me to remove the NOINDEX from my talk page, while still giving the information to where to find me if needed.
Best, NoFWDaddress(d) 19:57, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Would you please agree to delete the page? The move log will then be displayed, so it is still transparent for the end user. NoFWDaddress(d) 10:16, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
@NoFWDaddress I can't delete this. The link or redirect is required by the Global rename policy. Don't make a editwar with delete requests or blanking this page.--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 10:52, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
The policy requires a visible link (like the log entries that appears when the page gets deleted) and not a redirect. Can I ask another admin since you seem not to want to discuss this issue or to be sensible to the origin of it (off-wiki harassment)? NoFWDaddress(d) 11:55, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
NoFWDaddress A logbook entry is not "duly and visibly". I understand what you mean. This case would need to be discussed in greater detail, but this attracts even more attention. In addition, if you hope to be able with off-wiki harassment in this way, this will do very little. The people who have a name know it anyway, and your old name remains visible.--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 12:27, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Would you agree with a soft redirect then? The content would be __NOINDEX__{{Soft redirect|User talk:NoFWDaddress}}. NoFWDaddress(d) 12:33, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Yes--𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 12:34, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
