Non-IRC ways to help?

Are there ways to help without constantly hanging out in IRC? I would love to help out, but I can't always be hanging out in IRC, and there are likely others who are the same. Perhaps something like Special:RecentChanges, but instead a listing of recent potential spam changes (perhaps updated by the same bots which throw info into IRC). I've looked through the tools, but I can't see anything there which seems to be like this. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 06:18, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, have a look at User:COIBot/Local and User:COIBot/XWiki, to get most effectiveness look to turn the assisting gadget. billinghurst sDrewth 07:24, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Though as an addendum, it works better in conjunction with IRC for some active searching and checking tools where you are looking at building cases for sneaky spammers here to play, not just slam and bam. If you are looking for something more immediate for the servers, watching the history of the page is very useful as it updates regularly. You can also get the server to run updated checks by use of User:COIBot/Poke so you don't have to be in IRC. I will admit that the documentation on how to assist is slim. billinghurst sDrewth 10:17, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps I can update the documentation a bit once I get the hang of things. I agree it's currently somewhat marginal in many ways. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 07:28, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Odd interwiki links on ky: main page

Sometimes when navigating to the main page of the Kyrgyz Wikipedia the "In Other Languages" links point not to other Wikipedias' main pages, but to their Featured Picture pages. At other times the inter-language links display fine. After a little tinkering, I have a hunch that logging in and logging out has something to do with it (the problem has so far only occurred for me when logged out, although it did not re-appear after logging in and logging back out again). Global Deletion Process

Is there scope to develop a global deletion process for non-notable articles present on several small wikis ? The deletion process would only apply for wikis on the SWMT list. Amqui (talk) 20:28, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Currently? Not that I know of. But creating this kind of process would be an interesting RfC. I'm not sure whether I'd support this or not. Currently, you can request cross-wiki deletions on SRM, but for borderline cases (not obviously deletable), you (I'm not sure about this) probably have to propose it on a wiki-by-wiki basis. This reminds me of the crosswiki IMAGE&POESIA pages. The page was deleted as non-notable on enwiki but still exists on small wikis (see the interwikis on cr:ᒪᓯᓂᐸᔨᐃᐧᐣ_ᐁᑲᐧ_ᒪᓯᓇᐦᐃᑲᐣ). πr2 (tc) 02:25, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

User:Si Gam on Aceh Wikipedia

Greetings Everyone,

First of all, I would like to thank every one of you for your countless time and effort in counteracting vandalism on all the interwiki editions of Wikipedia regardless whether the wikipedia edition is large or small. I am very Grateful and will always remember your charitable works.

Today I had left a comment notifying the wikimedia community of the actions of User:Si Gam of Aceh wikipedia who continues to delete the article "Geurija Isa Jatoë" (Aceh translation of True Jesus Church article) on Aceh wikipedia. The reason he gave was "there are mistakes".

As we all know, any minor trivial mistakes can still be corrected later on by other users. In the past, User:Hercule and User:Juhko helped revert any blankings/deletions by User:Si Gam Aceh by restoring the article and commenting on it. However both those users are not currently patrolling Aceh Wikipedia so the recent deletion of the article by User:Si Gam went unnoticed.

I do not want a "Law of the Jungle" situation to prevail on ace.wikipedia.org and hence I humbly entreat the help of you folks in preventing User:Si Gam from blanking and/or deleting the article "Geurija Isa Jatoë" on Aceh Wikipedia. --Jose77 (talk) 05:19, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

The article contains many mistakes. And since November 30, 2008, no one improve it. And FYI, we have article about church (ace:Geurija), Christianity (ace:Kristen) and Judaism (ace:Yahudi). So the accusation is baseless. -- Si Gam (talk) 05:27, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

About automatic spam/accounts creation in Asturian Wikipedia

First things first, a huge thank you for your help with spammers in ast-wiki. Your help is really appreciated! My best guess with our problem is that our AbuseFilter and/or Spam-blacklist are too weak (or non existent) to succesfully stop automatic account creation and spam. Could you, please, have a look and put in place some extra generic filters if necessary? Until our bureaucrat returns from a well deserved holidays I can't do it myself.

Also, it could be worth investigate what impact would have for Wikimedia sites to have hundreds of strange accounts in ast-wiki when SUL comes in place in August. All the best. --Oriciu (talk) 00:47, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

I have created two abusefilters for now — one for keeping track of new article creations that contain external links, it currently just asks for a confirmation from the user if he is sure that he wants to create the article. Maybe the spambots can't handle that, and that's sufficient, otherwise the filter can be set to forbid the action); and one for specific spam wordings based on a filter here from Meta; this one is set to forbid the action. I will of course check these filters for hits. Unfortunately Asturian Wikipedia is currently a favourite target of spammers. There will be no specific issues with SUL, because all new accounts nowadays get a SUL account already. --MF-W 17:22, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Mason Wyatt

The user Mason Wyatt has been creating nearly identical articles across different language Wikipedias, apparently with the goal of getting article-count milestones announced at Wikimedia News (recently he conveniently announced the milestones himself). Unfortunately, the articles are always copies from a different language Wikipedia (Min Nan, as it turns out) and are only sub-stubs, besides. ("The food here is terrible." "Yes, and such small portions!") See this exchange (at a third party's talk page) about the problem when I first encountered it, and (for more context) this recent warning I have left on his talk page here and at the Min Nan Wikipedia, which is where the original copies of the articles have been coming from (e.g., chr:A is from zh-min-nan:A). He first created his account at the Romanian Wikipedia (see the first link in this comment), perhaps in response to getting some of his anon edits deleted at the Aromanian Wikipedia (and maybe others). Many of his edits at the English Wikipedia look like test edits (adding and immediately removing the same content). He has also edited the Simple English Wikipedia quite a bit, including copy-and-paste jobs from the English Wikipedia that have all been deleted. I'd appreciate it if someone else (preferably a cross-wiki admin/steward who could decide whether a block is in order) could check the rest of his edits to see if anything else needs to be deleted or reverted. Thanks. - dcljr (talk) 04:44, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

This is Decker. I locked the account and deleted the nonsensical pages. --MF-W 15:32, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Pashto Wiktionary

I guess this isn't exactly what this group was formed to handle, but it's close — and the only other places I could think to post this were at the English Wiktionary and the English Wikipedia, neither of which would probably welcome a long message about this. (Not knowing how to read Pashto, I couldn't even figure out where to post about this at the Pashto Wikipedia.)

For about 10 months now, the Pashto Wiktionary has been steadily growing from below 1,000 entries to over 21,500 today. Problem is, the majority of the entries seem to be written as if it's a big "Pashto-to-X" dictionary, instead of an "X-to-Pashto" dictionary, as Wiktionaries are supposed to be.

By way of an example, consider the most recently created entry, as I type this: "دوګړه". The page contains a header that apparently stands for "English" followed by the definition "N small speck tinny the ward دوکړ is used to emphasis smallness". So, instead of having the (presumably) Pashto word defined in Pashto, it merely lists an English translation under the "English" header. The non-Pashto entries are similarly messed up: the "exit" entry, for example, seems to contain a Pashto definition/translation under the header "پښتو" ("Pashto"), instead of under a header that's the Pashto word for "English". The wiki also contains a large number of Cyrillic entries (for example, "писать"), the vast majority of which are missing definitions entirely, but many of which have "English" and "Pashto" headers, presumably waiting for translations into those languages. This is not how Wiktionaries are supposed to be formatted.

Back in October 2012, I cautioned the three most active editors that the definitions there should be written in Pashto. The first two responded that the Pashto definitions would be added "later". When I went back in July 2013, I asked the wiki's sole admin why English definitions were being added and got no reply (even though he/she has made hundreds of edits since then). Another user left a message about same issue 3 weeks later and also (to my knowledge) has gotten no reply. (Just recently, a new active user has shown up creating exactly the same kind of entries, which kinda makes me suspect this is the same user creating multiple accounts for some reason. But I digress.)

I'm going to point to this comment from a couple of other Wikimedia wikis to try to get some Pashto editors to help "fix" the wiki, but perhaps a cross-wiki admin from this Team can look into this and see if more radical steps might need to be taken (obviously, I would recommend simply talking to the editors first, but what I've done of that so far hasn't seemed to help very much). - dcljr (talk) 11:08, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

This is to notify that I am aware of this issue, what we are doing we are adding all the Pashto terms and expressions that are very important with its translation in English which is widely used. Afterwards we have a plan to add their Pashto meanings and examples. We will also add the words and expressions of other languages with their Pashto meanings. So there is no need of being worried for the project. If there is a universal admin who can transfer the Pashto terms and expressions to the English Wiktionary with their English meaning then there will not be the need to have the English meanings of the Pashto words and expressions in Pashto Wiktionary. But still there will be the need of the definitions in the original language, Pashto. --احمد-نجيب-بياباني-ابراهيمخېل (talk) 20:08, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
I'm not sure you understand what the problem is. The information you're adding can be kept in the wiki if you would just format the entries correctly from the beginning. (Why add the information in the wrong way the first time around, and then correct it later?) Each section heading ("== ... ==", "header" for short) in an entry should identify a language in which the headword (the page title) has a meaning (not simply a translation, since any word in any language can be translated into any other language, but not all words [strings of characters] carry an inherent meaning in every language). The entry "bakery", for example, should have a single header, "انگرېزي" (assuming that's the correct word for the English language), not the word for "Pashto", since the word "bakery" (I'm pretty sure) only has a meaning in English. Note how the French, German, and Spanish Wiktionaries do it, for example ("Anglais", "Englisch", and "Inglés" all mean "English"). Now consider an entry like "پلټونکى", which has 5 different headers. Is that really a word in 5 different languages or is it a word in one language translated into 4 others? Other Wiktionaries allow multiple language headers only when the word actually has a meaning in each of the languages; see, for example, "put" in the English, German, and French Wiktionaries. The English and German Wiktionaries have special sections ("Translations" and "Übersetzungen", respectively) in which they translate each of the meanings into other languages. (French also does translations, in a section called "Traductions", but it's not present in the "put" entry.) Others can tell me if I'm wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure every Wiktionary in every language is supposed to adhere to this basic system (language-name section headings only for languages in which the words carry meaning). - dcljr (talk) 01:24, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
ok now i got your point. From now on we will try to work on this issue but If you could help me with making a translation part where we can enter the different translations of a term or expression as well, I mean if you could build a template with show/hide options where the translations of a term is written in different languages. your help in this regard will be highly appreciated.--احمد-نجيب-بياباني-ابراهيمخېل (talk) 20:06, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Antivandal bot

Has anyone seriously considered operating a version of ClueBot or a similar anti-vandalism bot on small wikis? Obviously, it would only be used on small (GS) wikis, and if used, permission should be asked first on a wiki-by-wiki basis, with the possibility to completely opt out at any time. It would only judge obviously revertable edits, such as those with repeated letters, and ignore any questionable edits with seemingly valid content. Bad idea? PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:20, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Not a bad idea, but one that would be very hard to implement. Getting approval from the various affected communities would take forever. Ajraddatz (Talk) 21:58, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure if this is on labs already, but someone had a tool for finding a page across all wikis. Example, you'd type in "Cake" and it would link you to all cake pages xwiki, and the last person who edited it. Good for finding spam pages and stuff. Also really good for seeing if someone tried to contact you on some small project and an email wasn't sent. Ajraddatz (Talk) 02:43, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Well, I just went through all existing tools and didn't see anything exactly like that. I think User:Hoo man is going to move his Toolserver tools to Tool Labs, but I don't know when. If not, I can probably just use the source or write a clone. PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:30, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Great tool, but I have one suggestion: sometimes it lists edits to wikis that are in a script other than Latin (Greek, Devanagari, etc.) as "possible gibberish". Is there anything you can do to fix this? --AmaryllisGardener (talk) 04:00, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
The tool is actually just getting the data from IRC (Internet Relay Chat), even the coloring. The bots (RyuBot-x) are run by User:Hosiryuhosi, and User:Krinkle is the author of the bot code. I suggest you ask Krinkle about the "Possible gibberish?". If you really want to see the channel, join #cvn-swconnect. I made a separate Tool Labs version for three reasons: 1) Some people don't want to join the IRC channel, essentially a chat room filled with bots and other users. 2) By default, webchat (see "connect" link to the left) makes your IP public, so this is an alternative to really privacy-sensitive people. 3) I wanted to test Tool Labs, before I write more tools. If you do decide to join #cvn-sw, you'll see that my tool has the nickname "testxyz". I hope this answers your questions. Good luck on scowiki. :) PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:11, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I'll ask him about that. Thank you! --AmaryllisGardener (talk) 14:30, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor

Hello, everyone. I thought you might like to hear a bit more detail about the VisualEditor rollouts, since the next couple of months will provide it to users at about 40% of the Wikipedias, most of them on the smaller side. mw:VisualEditor/Rollouts has the current list of affected projects, with the dates. When VisualEditor is enabled for all users, people will have the option to use VisualEditor ("Edit") or to use the current wikitext editor ("Edit source"). If you haven't tried out VisualEditor, please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information about it.

The next batch will be done on Monday, December 2, 2013. After that, there will be another group in January, but the date hasn't been settled yet.

What you might expect when monitoring:

  • In our experience so far, uptake rates vary widely. In some communities, it's barely used at all, and in others, more than a quarter of registered editors and more than half of IPs use it.
  • If you're willing and able, please report any problems you see in bugzilla under the "VisualEditor" product. If you would prefer not, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page at mediawiki.org.
  • Serious problems affecting large numbers of pages can be reported in e-mail directly James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention, or to the public IRC channel, #mediawiki-visualeditor, where there's usually a dev who can deal with the problems.

If you can translate:

  • To translate the user interface, start by creating an account at TranslateWiki. Once your account request is approved, all you need to do is select your language from this list. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to “edit” on the other. Pressing "edit" will open an edit window where you can work.
  • The User Guide at Mediawiki.org is another important document. To translate this, simply go to the MediaWiki.org page, and select "translate this page". Your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once the translation is done, just copy it over to a suitably named page at the target project.

If you want to help with translations and would like to talk about how, please leave a message for mw:User:PEarley (WMF).

And, as usual, if you need help, you can contact me. I check in here at Meta a couple of times a week, but most of you already know that you can find me on en.wp every day. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:48, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion on small wikis

Hi, reverting obvious vandalism in an existing legitimate article is straightforward, but sometimes I see an inappropriate article created (this one, for example). Is there a speedy deletion tag that works on all wikis? Or do they all have their own idiosyncratic templates? Thanks. --Randykitty (talk) 15:36, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

@Randykitty: {{delete}} should work on all small wikis, although some larger ones like Commons and Wikisource use {{sdelete}} for speedies and {{delete}} for XfDs. There are scripts you can use to tag faster too. PiRSquared17 (talk) 16:07, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
{{speedy}} is also used at MediaWiki.org for speedy deletions and {{delete}} for others (non-speeedies). --Glaisher [talk] 04:40, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Special:MyPage/global.js. I have the same problem with Firefox. My workaround is to press <escape> before WikiEd kicks in and edit without that. But if your connection and computer are fast, that's a bit like playing Space Invaders... :-) If WikiEd does kick in, the edit window just disappears (or goes to "size 0") and there is no way you can edit the page. --Randykitty (talk) 16:30, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Attention: the text given by Snowolf that you should copy to SynchBot contains a few errors (I guess some update was made to the bot that Snowolf missed). I just did it myself, too, and hopefully I did it correctly, so you can copy from me (but I give no warranty... :-) --Randykitty (talk) 17:05, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

The Medical Translation Project needs help

The Medical Translation Project has provided over 600 translations in close collaboration between translators, medical Wikipedians and Wikipedians working in other languages.

Watchlist with watch/ignore talk page threads and global watchlist

As an IEG proposal, I have proposed making a user script which permits you to watch or ignore threads on talk pages. With this script, for talk pages your watchlist will only show the threads you have chosen to watch. Alternately it will show all threads except those which you have indicated you desire to ignore. In addition, the script will permit you to display entries from your watchlist on other Wikipedia projects and languages. Discussion is encouraged at the IEG page. — Makyen (talk) 18:12, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

You should ignore each edits at all pages that are listed in   Project:Sandbox. Nevertheless, this reverting by Matiia was correct. But in normal cases each sandbox allows new users or IPs to do everything - including any nonsense or vandalism. -- Juetho (talk) 16:38, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) Wikipedia

Hi, SWMT. I just want to let you know that I will be on an approximate two-week wikibreak starting this weekend, and my access to ladwiki (or any other project) will be very limited. I am usually pretty on top of things at ladwiki, but other sysops there are present much more sporadically. So I'd appreciate your help in keeping a closer eye on things between 27 August and 8 September. Many thanks in advance. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:15, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

bxr.wiki wikitext and VisualEditor broken

If anyone could please take a look at Buryat Wikipedia engine. I suspect there is something wrong with the interface. 1. The editing interface does not load. Wikitext editing works only partially, and VisualEditor does not work at all. 2. For not-logged in users the main page displays a page from several days ago. I spotted both problems from several computers and browsers. --Edler von Udinium 12:54, 3 December 2016 (UTC)

Yiddish Wiktionary

I am looking for a someone with technical (computer / IT / programming) knowledge to help me while editing the Yiddish Wiktionary. This project seems to have been dead for many months (years?) now, and I have no clue as to where to start reviving it or how to perform some larger changes (e.g. automatic replacement &c). If there is anyone willing to co-operate, I would be grateful for contacting me on the Polish Wikipedia. I speak English, German, Japanese and my native Polish, I also understand without problems Russian and Turkish (but I am poor at using them actively). Yiddish would also be an option, but it probably does not matter. Maitake (talk) 13:40, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Mass low/no-relevance new page creations on Small Wikis

I'm reporting on a recurring phenomenon clearly viewed at Wikidata, whose admins suggested the problem might best be aired at Meta as I'm looking for the best course of action in these events. Over the past four months in my daily activity on the ZU WP, there have been a handful of page creations for some American fast-food franchise (e.g. this latest:d:Q376627. These will have a single or double line of content, apparently machine translated, likewise a red-link category. Checking the Wikidata item, it emerges that the (usually IP) user has created ca. five dozen (!) of these pages, many on Small WPs. In the WPs where there's no administrator, one of you is likely to discover the situation and see to its remedy. My query: Is or has there been a policy of mass deleting for such spam? How do you advise me to handle this? Thanks! -- Deborahjay (talk) 15:33, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

Not sure whether this talk page is the best venue for this discussion. There's not much we can do, as anyone can edit Wikimedia projects, and the American fast-food franchises are not the only topic that is spammed across wikis. But when we see those we should remove the pages immediately and globally block the IP / user. But they are usually creating pages also on wikis with many administrators, where global sysops can't remove pages. Stryn (talk) 09:10, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
@Deborahjay and Stryn: Now this person (if a /130 IPv6 subnet like "2600:1700:1e0:6b20/130" is enough to identify a single person) is doing the same here. Mahir256 (talk) 00:19, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
The English version of the article in the latest example is en:Smashburger. That was created in 2009 by a long-term editor in good standing, who remains active. It has been edited by a good number of others since, non of whom have seen fit to nominate it for deletion. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:25, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: The problem, of course, is not with the English article, but that the articles on this franchise on other wikis are a single or double line of content, apparently machine translated, likewise a red-link category and that [c]hecking the Wikidata item, it emerges that the (usually IP) user has created ca. five dozen (!) of these pages, many on Small WPs, which appears to be spam behavior. Incubator reform

Hi,

I made a proposal to address the many technical problems with Incubator. Basically, instead of having many languages stored under one wiki and separated by prefixes, there will be a wiki for each new language, with special configuration that will allow its quick closure if it becomes inactive or spammy. If and when this proposal is implemented, it will significantly change the way in which the Wikimedia Incubator works, and it will get many new wikis created.

This proposal received thoughtful and generally positive response at these places:

The discussions above, though generally positive, are not enough to start implementing this, so I'm asking other groups of people who may be interested in it, and the Small Wiki Monitoring Team is obviously one of these groups, because a system to monitor vandalism effectively will have to be in place.

So:

  1. Please read the original proposal in Phabricator: Make creating a new Language project easier
  2. It's a good idea to read all the comments on the Phabricator task page, but in particular, note the comment by Urbanecm. It deals with the steps to making these wikis possible to monitor for vandalism.
  3. Look at the points raised by Revi at the discussion in the Incubator's Community portal about the problems of monitoring.
  4. Look at the points raised by StevenJ81 on the Language Committee mailing list about his assessment of the number of new wikis that will be created: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/langcom/2018-July/002161.html

That's a lot of info to process, so first of all, thanks for your time :)

Given the above, what do you think? Are the potential problems of monitoring the new incubator wikis addressed in the current written proposals?

If not, which problems do you see?

Thanks! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:35, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

So far, incubator admins monitored all of the test projects (global sysops for instance do not even have access to the incubator). Does this mean that the anti-vandalism work on test projects is supposed to be delegated from incubator admins away to the SWMT? Urbanecm's proposal on phabricator sounds a little like this is not going to be the case if the new incubator operates on its own wiki cluster. --Vogone (talk) 16:53, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
My understanding is that Incubator admins would be playing the role of "global sysop" in this cluster. It doesn't have to be that way, of course, but my sense was that you guys have your hands full already. StevenJ81 (talk) 02:39, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the comments, Vogone and StevenJ81.
Does this mean that the anti-vandalism work on test projects is supposed to be delegated from incubator admins away to the SWMT? - maybe. It kind of makes sense to me, but of course I'm not going to just do it without asking the SWMT first :)
If this happens, there will be many new wikis. They will probably have a different URL structure, something like https://nd.incubator.wikipedia.org (or maybe something different, but that's not the point). There will be a procedure for their closure that is less bureaucratic than the usual wiki closure procedure (I don't have full details yet, but that's part of the plan). Other than that, however, they will function similarly to a usual wiki: each wiki with its own recent changes, extensions, Wikidata connection, etc.
In this regard they will be similar to the small wikis that we have now. Quite possibly some of them will be more active than many of the full-fledged, but low-activity wikis. So maybe they could be monitored similarly to the small wikis; there will be just more of them.
Urbanecm (User:Martin Urbanec) says in Phabricator: Also, the changes should be directed to one IRC channel and another interface can simulate global recent changes (so the patrolling requirement will be solved). The SWMT uses IRC today, so it sounds similar.
But maybe I'm missing something important. That's what I'm really asking here. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:26, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
I talked about one IRC channel because it is very hard to monitor whole cluster. The IRC solution SWMT developed works just fine, and there's no sense with not using something working just fine for other wikicluster being globally patrolled by another group of people (in this case, Incubator admins playing global sysop (or maybe steward) role in the new cluster), or potentionally for the same group of people (SWMT), depending on how the decision will look like. From the technical side, it doesn't matter. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 11:36, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Help monitoring the Northern Sámi Wikipedia on a daily basis

Hello all. Bureaucrat from the Northern Sámi Wikipedia here. I could use some daily help with the Northern Sámi Wikipedia, as I'm short on time to monitor all the changes that one anon user who doesn't know any Northern Sámi is making (via different IP addresses, albeit from one IP address for a couple of days at least). While the user is not outright vandalizing the se-wiki, this user has a propensity for making small changes that are not necessarily adding value to the se-wiki like adding extremely generic categories (or even incorrect categories), removing outdated information without replacing it with current information, replacing part of the information while leaving part of the old information, etc. to dozens of articles a day. It would also be helpful if the SWMT monitor knows enough Norwegian to communicate with the user when necessary, as (s)he then reacts better to advice. Thanks for any and all help. -Yupik (talk) 20:59, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Suspicious accounts with Chinese characters created in Basque Wiktionary

Sorry for writing about this issue here, I am not sure where exactly should I be reporting this. Please send me to where this should be posted and I will do so as soon as possible.

Hello all, I wanted to reach you with an issue that worries me. For the last year a total of 39 suspìcious accounts were manually created in Basque Wiktionary, all of them named with Chinese or Japanese characters: (List of suspicious accounts)(List of recent manually created accounts) (Basque language has nothing related with these languages or with their characters). These accounts have made not a single edit nor any kind of activity inside our project, and looking for their overall Wikimedia accounts, the only project in which they are registered is ours. It makes me think they could be used in the future with malicious purposes, although it surpasses me to know how. I have not blocked any of these accounts as they have shown no reason for that action to be taken yet. I also have not made any further research about this situation more than what I have told you here, however I am sure many of you might have already become aware of this suspicious activity in other Wikimedia projects, and could know the reason behind this or how to proceed or what protocol to follow to face this. Thank you in advance, --Bengoa (My user talk) 13:18, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

From the name pattern all these account seems to use pop culture (idol, j-pop artist) name, either real Isechika or copypcat of Isechika.--AldnonymousBicara? 13:29, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Small Wiki Toolkits focus area at Wikimania

Hello all, we're organising a "Small Wiki Toolkits" focus area at this year's Wikimania Hackathon & Wikimania to support wikis that don’t have many technical contributors. Maybe this is interesting for some of you? The plan is to run small workshops & to offer technical support also during the main Wikimania conference and to provide a "problem & solution matching" board, so that people who want to solve issues in their wikis can find + talk to people who have solved similar problems in their wiki already. If you are at Wikimania and would like to offer technical support & discuss topics around templates, bots, gadgets, wiki configuration settings, translation tools ... - anything you can think of that might be helpful to share & discuss - please feel welcome to sign up at the Small Wiki Toolkits community booth :-). Also, if you're looking for support, you're very welcome to drop by! You can find all the information on this page: wmania:2019:Small_wiki_toolkits. Hope to see some of you there :-) -BMueller (WMF) (talk) 20:36, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

IRC

To monitor changes on small wikis, I use the IRC channel on freenode. The normal screen gives 20-30 of the latest edits with clear color coding for blacklisted or Ip users and such, making it very easy to spot possible problematic edits. However, when I just went there, I get a completely different screen, listing perhaps 5 recent edits and with a color scheme and font size that makes it very hard to read. Frankly, I find this unworkable. I'm not very familiar with IRC, this is the only channel I ever use. Perhaps somebody here can tell me how I can get the previous screen back. If this is an "upgrade" that cannot be changed back, I will have to stop patrolling edits on small wikis. Help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! --Randykitty (talk) 12:12, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

@Randykitty: Do you mean #cvn-sw? I am seeing at this moment users on blacklist, more than 5 edits are shown? --Cohaf (talk) 12:30, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Yes, #cvn-sw. It looks very different from the last time that I visited there (don't remember exactly, perhaps a few weeks). --Randykitty (talk) 13:38, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
@Randykitty: It still look the same to me since I first visited, I am using IRC Cloud btw. --Cohaf (talk) 15:57, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Did you change IRC clients? The channel looks the same to me, but if you changed clients that might impact the look. Most clients are very customizable so you should be able to adapt it to your preferred look. – Ajraddatz (talk) 16:00, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
I'm not aware of having changed anything. Frankly, I wouldn't even know how to switch IRC clients. This is the link that I always use: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#cvn-sw if that helps... --Randykitty (talk) 16:04, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Solved! From the above I learned that there are different IRC clients, something I didn't know (I mentioned being not familiar with IRC... :-) So I Googled IRC client and found mIRC. After installing it, things now still look a bit different than before, but a lot better than what I had, so as far as I am concerned my problem is solved. Thanks to everybody here for the fast assistance!! --Randykitty (talk) 16:21, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Oops, I was too optimistic... There are two problems. One is that you cannot simply click on a wikilink to open it, because mIRC runs as a separate program from Firefox. Second: it's not free (after 30 days you have to pay. 20 bucks is perhaps not much but still...). Any suggestions for another Firefox-compatible client? --Randykitty (talk) 17:57, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Yep: IRCCloud (irccloud.com). There's a free version (you don't have to pay) and it's what I use. It's web-based, so it works on any browser. Also, since it requires registration with them, you can use the same IRCCloud account on multiple devices (phones, computers, etc). Hope this helps, Vermont (talk) 20:56, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Forgot to add, I recommend trying out SWViewer. I like it better than IRC for antivandalism-patrolling. Vermont (talk) 20:57, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip, sounds like IRCCloud might get me back to what I am used to. But as soon as I have time, I'll check out SWViewer. First time I hear about that! Thanks!! --Randykitty (talk) 21:06, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
I haven't heard of SWViewer. I also can't seem to log into it... – Ajraddatz (talk) 21:13, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

Help smaller wiki communities grow their technical capacity!

Hi all, Small Wiki Toolkits (SWT) is an initiative to support small wiki communities by sharing and developing technical skills needed to support, maintain, and grow a language wiki. You can learn more about it here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits. As a next step for this initiative, sharing with you some ideas on how you can be a part of this:

  • Contribute to a Starter kit by proposing or helping develop and write recommendations for technical topics in simple English.
  • Develop toolkits using the recommendations on the SWT page. You can see existing toolkits in the Category:Small_wiki_toolkits on Wikimedia Commons.
  • Learn technical topics using the resources on the SWT page and apply the skills gained to provide technical support to a small wiki community.
  • Translate resources such as the SWT page itself and tutorials on technical topics linked from it.
  • Provide technical support on the support desk on mediawiki.org, mailing lists, etc.
  • Organize a technical workshop or a session to help a small wiki community.

If you want to help with any of the above or there is anything else you would like to share around building local capacity in a small wiki, please start a discussion on the talk page and/or add your name to the list of interested membersSSethi (WMF) (talk) 00:30, 8 May 2020 (UTC) (on behalf of the Small Wiki Toolkits Initiative)

Monitoring files

Hi! I think it is a good initiative to help the smaller wikis!

I like to visit wikis and check images. It is not always easy as I only speak a few languages and sometimes Google Translate can't help me. And there are thousands of files so I can only check a few wikis. Since the SWMT visit a lot of wikis and perhaps understand some of the languages maybe you could also have a look at files?

In short all files must have a license. Either a free one like cc-by-sa-4.0 or a non-free fairuse template. If you know about copyright and checking images it is of course easier but even if you usually do not work with checking files it should be possible to see if there is a license template on the files and if local admins seems to delete files.

If you come across a wiki that seems to need help with images you can ping me if you can't help them or do not have the time. --MGA73 (talk) 08:12, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Identifying vandalism and spam in languages you don't know

So SWMT monitors vandalism and spam. How do you identify them in languages you don't know? I have definitely unknowingly mistaken vandalism for a good-faith edit. Can I Log In (talk) 16:10, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

If you not really sure just don't do anything. Google Translate is always my friend. Stryn (talk) 17:11, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Ah yes, the google translate extention. Can I Log In (talk) 19:06, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
@Can I Log In: I usually only edit the languages that I have a basic understanding of or vandalisms like adding "xD", emojis or swearwords. Blanking is easy to spot without any knowledge of the alphabet, "ფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფფ" is no different than "WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW". You can still help if you don't know these languages. Of course, as Stryn said, if you are not sure, just leave it, somebody else will deal with that. Cheers! Nadzik (talk) 17:45, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Of course, obvious vandalism; obvious means, obvious. Well blanking, there's sometime a good-faith edit summary. Can I Log In (talk) 19:06, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Celtic Knot Conference & Small Wikipedia helpdesk

Hello all,

The remote Celtic Knot Conference will take place next week. Beyond its name, it will be the occasion to bring together people working on many different languages, who recently started a Wikipedia project, and need support from the community.

The main program will run live on July 9-10, and contain sessions like "Develop Wikis in local languages" or "Search Support for Minority Languages". The asynchronous part of the program will allow you to watch other sessions at any time, like "Help your community grow" or "Wikisource, statistics and dynamics". The side events program is still open for contributions.

I also wanted to highlight the social part, and in particular the Kickstart your Wikipedia helpdesk that will start on July 8th. This helpdesk will take place on a pad (already prepared but not advertised yet) where people are welcome to ask questions, support each other, on the topic of small Wikipedias, tools, templates, etc.

We're still looking for people to help at this helpdesk. You don't need to commit for the 3 full days, you can just hop on the page from time to time and see if there are unanswered questions.

If you have questions or suggestions, please let me know! Cheers, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 10:16, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

NEW: Lists of technical resources and recommendations for smaller language wikis!

Hello everyone, As part of the Small wiki toolkits initiative, a Starter kit has been developed for smaller language Wikimedia wikis! This Starter kit lists resources, tools, and recommendations in technical areas (e.g., templates, bots, gadgets, etc.) relevant to smaller wikis that are just getting started. Small wiki contributors can use it to make their community's workflow easier. You can now use and promote the Starter kit in your wiki community, and start translating the landing page and its subpages in a language you want.

If you have any questions, ideas for venues where it should be shared or wiki pages where it should be linked, or any other suggestions for improving it further, please share on this talk page.

If you are interested in helping with the Small Wiki Toolkits initiative and can offer help with running workshops, developing toolkits, or exchanging problems and challenges in smaller wiki communities, add yourself as a member here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits#Members. --SSethi (WMF) (talk) 18:32, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Nice, have you thought of coordinating the content with Manual for small and new Wikipedias somehow? Nemo 22:56, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for sharing this manual! The resources and recommendations listed on the Starter kit are technical by nature, and the manual you have shared is more editing focused. So I am not sure how the two can be combined, but certainly to be included in the "See also" section. -SSethi (WMF) (talk) 07:39, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Being complementary, interlinked and not overlapping is certainly one possible coordination strategy! Thanks, Nemo 15:03, 22 July 2020 (UTC)

Am I being ghosted?

...or the WP equivalent thereof, on the Kinyarwanda WP? There's no administrator there, only one highly active editor whom I mentor, and my >100 edits in the last 30 days don't show me among the RW WP's active users, although they do appear as usual in my own User contributions page. An explanation would be appreciated, especially if any intervention is needed. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 20:18, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Do you mean being displayed in rw:Special:ActiveUsers? That's a system generated list, and I have no idea why you aren't being shown on it. I don't think it's a conspiracy against you. – Ajraddatz (talk) 20:31, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Most peculiar. A bug, perhaps? --Yair rand (talk) 20:37, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
I made an edit to my userpage and reverted it, and I immediately appeared on the list. So it's not a caching issue. Might be worth filing a phabricator task about. – Ajraddatz (talk) 20:38, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

OP ETA: My recent edit count appears in the Xhosa WP (9 in the last 30 days) but not in Igbo WP where I made several dozen. I do show up in recent edits stats for the Yoruba WP and Zulu WP. I visit these five underserved African language WPs at least weekly, sometimes daily, so this is something I want to clear up before it slips any more. A phabricator task request is the way to go? -- Deborahjay (talk) 20:53, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Template:Translated page

The w:Template:Translated page is needed in the following language projects which have no Admin and few active editors:

  • Igbo
  • Kinyarwanda
  • Xhosa
  • Zulu

The text can remain in English until I can contact a native speaker of each language to substitute a translation. Thank you. -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:24, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Small wiki audit

I'd appreciate some people looking over the page Small wiki audit and giving suggestions (including "this is a stupid idea"). PiRSquared17 (talk) 10:38, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Protection against IP vandals

Two race-related pages in the Igbo WP are being repeatedly vandalized by different IP addresses:

Would page protection to restrict editing to account users accomplish the purpose? Please note that the IGwiki doesn't have an Admin and only a few editors other than Edit-a-thons. I patrol daily and also perform maintenance, but don't know the language. -- Deborahjay (talk) 08:58, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

UPDATE This problem continues on nearly a daily basis. -- Deborahjay (talk) 15:41, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

@Deborahjay: I have semiproteced those two pages for 3 months for excessive vandalism. In the future, I suggest to write such requests to GSR or SRM, which are monitored by more people capable to act. Thanks! --Martin Urbanec (talk) 19:48, 5 September 2020 (UTC)
I think protection requests like these should be directed to SRM since I'm pretty sure this is not common on small wikis, unlike enwiki. GSR is more for deletion and blocking, pretty much how TwinkleGlobal functions with GSR. Can I Log In (talk) 01:52, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Small wiki audit/Malagasy Wiktionary

Please take a look at this page, where I have detailed the massive problems with the Malagasy Wiktionary. I know that the SWMT mostly fights vandalism, but this is a very large-scale issue on what is actually quite a small wiki in terms of actual editors. I am looking for community input on this, so we can move forward and clean up the mess. Metaknowledge (talk) 02:13, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Referred page has been moved to join with RFC on subject.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:32, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Vandals in Malay Wiktionary

There is an IP address creates new pages in foreign language. Do delete the pages and block the IP address. We don't have any active admins for a long time. --Tofeiku (talk) 04:08, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

@Tofeiku: Deletion requests should be made at Global sysops/Requests. Sabon Harshe (talk) 01:46, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Google Translate announces support for Sanskrit, used by about 20,000 people, but not Scots

https://blog.google/products/translate/24-new-languages/

It would be great to have a NLP database of actual Scots some day. Any idea when the corrupted articles will ever be deleted or moved to a segregated namespace? It's been years now. 71.204.166.188 17:20, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

There are discussions about systematic issues regarding content on both of these wikis. Rschen7754 02:02, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Work with and listen to the community on the wikiproject you are helping

Tiõrv! After recent experiences with the SWMT on two separate wikipedia projects, I think that the "How to monitor a small wiki" section needs to include a new line with "Work with and listen to the community on the wikiproject you are helping". On both smnwp and sewp, we recently had team members who decided to help out by deleting what they had identified as broken redirects. With the first member to do so, we interacted with them and explained why we had reverted their edits and a nice dialogue ensued. This left a really good impression of SWMT and was refreshing.

A short while later a new member of SWMT comes and deletes the same exact pages on one of these two wps, but still has not interacted with the community. Later on, they moved on to the other wp and did the same thing. This definitely did not leave a good impression of what this team does to help out.

I would assume that the se and smn language communities are not the only ones on this team's monitoring list who have had more than enough experience with this latter type of "we have decided this is in your best interest because you do not know what is good for you" offline over the centuries. I do not assume that team members would realize the enormity of the intergenerational damage that that type of behaviour has left on many minority language communities, so please listen as it is crucial that you do. Work with and listen to the community on the wikiproject you are helping, especially when they say no, don't do that. Thank you. Yupik (talk) 12:18, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
