Talk:Small wiki toolkits
Any plan to make Small_wiki_toolkits multilingual?
editHi, as a translator, I am interested in if you would make this important page translatable or not? Smaller wikis are mutilingual, and you can always consult with Translators-l mailing list, which takes care of Tech News Weekly and other pages that updates irregularly. See for example Direct translation link:

RTL support
editHey readers, I'd like to some tips on making RTL-friendly tools. Where do you recommend I do that? --Zack (talk) 23:15, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
- @زكريا: Hey, great! Help me understand better: These are recommendations for developers and maintainers of Tools and those tools run on Toolforge? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 13:16, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Andre: I was thinking more about js/css recommandations for gadgets. But they might apply to any sort of tool. Things like flipping icons and dealing with cursive scripts like Arabic. --Zack (talk) 15:20, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- The two Gadgets that I know might be related: a) Extra-Editbuttons-persiantools.js for fixing arabic letters, grammars, numbers, URLs, article structure, sections, duplicate letters, zero-width non-joiner, hamza and some verbs and references and template problem b) CheckDictation.js that finds possible misspelled words in articles and suggests multiple replacement to editors and they can fix the mistake by one click. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 18:33, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
- @زكريا: I completely misread your question, ignore my previous comment :) It would be nice to include the tips related to developing RTL friendly tools in the Starter kit. There can be an item on this topic itself in the Starter kit. If the tips are related to gadgets, then it could go in the "Gadgets" section. SSethi (WMF) (talk) 06:26, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Small Wiki Toolkits at the Wikimedia Hackathon 2020
edit@زكريا:, @Masssly:, @Jayprakash12345:, @SSethi (WMF):, @Majavah:, @Pavithraes:, @RhinosF1:, @BMueller (WMF): and everyone else following this page: Hi! I boldly proposed a video call session for this Saturday 15:00 UTC at the remote Wikimedia Hackathon. No "presentation" or such, just to chat a bit about Small Wiki Toolkits or whatever comes to our minds. :) Would be cool to see you there if you have time (and an internet connection which allows it). Please also feel very welcome to add yourself as a co-host on the schedule! --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 12:12, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm not a big one for joining calls @AKlapper (WMF):. You were actually at the only call I've done for wikimedia! I'll be around on IRC though throughout and am in #wmhack. RhinosF1 (talk) 13:11, 6 May 2020 (UTC)
Request for feedback on recommendations for gadgets for the starter kit
editHi folks! What do you think about the recommendations for gadgets listed in the Starter Kit for small wikis here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit#Gadgets? Do you agree with these recommendations, are there any gadgets missing from this list that small wikis might benefit from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gadgets#Gadgets_popular_on_wikis? What more language or community-specific use cases, to cover in these recommendations? SSethi (WMF) (talk) 00:07, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Alternatives for English wiki templates on non-English wikis
editHello folks! We have a Templates and Modules resource almost ready as part of the Starter Kit project. The idea is for the list of templates on that page to have those templates that are well-maintained. But, most of the templates on it currently are English wiki centric. So, if you know a template on that page which is easier to use than its English version, feel free to add a note next to it: "X template on Y wiki" is easier to use than the English Wikipedia version of the template as <add reason here>. If you have any general feedback to share, you can use this talk page for that. I would much appreciate your feedback! Thanks! SSethi (WMF) (talk) 03:09, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Celtic Knot Conference & Small Wikipedia helpdesk
editHello all,
The remote Celtic Knot Conference will take place next week. Beyond its name, it will be the occasion to bring together people working on many different languages, who recently started a Wikipedia project, and need support from the community.
The main program will run live on July 9-10, and contain sessions like "Develop Wikis in local languages" or "Search Support for Minority Languages". The asynchronous part of the program will allow you to watch other sessions at any time, like "Help your community grow" or "Wikisource, statistics and dynamics". The side events program is still open for contributions.
I also wanted to highlight the social part, and in particular the Kickstart your Wikipedia helpdesk that will start on July 8th. This helpdesk will take place on a pad (already prepared but not advertised yet) where people are welcome to ask questions, support each other, on the topic of small Wikipedias, tools, templates, etc.
We're still looking for people to help at this helpdesk. You don't need to commit for the 3 full days, you can just hop on the page from time to time and see if there are unanswered questions.
If you have questions or suggestions, please let me know! Cheers, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 10:16, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
NEW: Lists of technical resources and recommendations for smaller language wikis!
editHello everyone, As part of the Small wiki toolkits initiative, a Starter kit has been developed for smaller language Wikimedia wikis! This Starter kit lists resources, tools, and recommendations in technical areas (e.g., templates, bots, gadgets, etc.) relevant to smaller wikis that are just getting started. Small wiki contributors can use it to make their community's workflow easier. You can now use and promote the Starter kit in your wiki community, and start translating the landing page and its subpages in a language you want. If you have any questions, ideas for venues where it should be shared or wiki pages where it should be linked, or any other suggestions for improving it further, please share on this talk page. --SSethi (WMF) (talk) 18:29, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Help wanted: A central place to find key technical documents
editHi everyone, your review and feedback is wanted: Wikimedia is exploring the idea of creating a developer portal to make it easier for technical contributors to find key documents. Would a single point of entry help you or others find what you need? Please share your thoughts and feedback on mw:Developer Advocacy/Developer Portal/Content Draft - thanks in advance! --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:37, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and the Gurenɛ Wikimedian Community
editI am User:Dnshitobu. I am a facilitator on the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and the Gurene Wikimedian Community and would love to have the technical capacity building for some members of both communities including myself so that we can serve and contribute our quota to the achievement of Wikimedia Foundation goal since we are already playing the role of Trainer of Trainees to both communities. Dnshitobu (talk) 09:40, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi SSethi (WMF),
I am user: Alhassan Mohammed Awal. I am a co-founder of the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and plays the role of Outreach and Campaigns manager for the user group. Just as Dnshitobu mentioned, the technical capacity building is something we desire to have as a small wiki in order to facilitate the growth and progress of our community. This will ultimately help community members to add their contributions to the Wikimedia Foundation Movement in achieving its goals. Alhassan Mohammed Awal (talk) 21:45, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

As User:T Cells in a topic above asks about supporting Yoruba language communities, I am wondering a bit if there is a connection between the two communities considering that it is also an active one in the West? SSethi (WMF) (talk) 07:23, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Small Wiki Toolkits for Wikimedia Community Malta
editWe are very interested in exploring possibilities of the Small Wiki Toolkits for the Maltese-language Wikipedia and other Maltese-language wiki projects through our affiliated user group. Sign-up as a mentor for small wiki toolkits workshops!

I seem to have broken how the toolkits template renders in this page
edit...and I'm not sure how to fix it. One of the changes I made here seems to have caused there to be a large white space before the toolkits grid displays: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:SWT_Toolkits&action=history. I think maybe it's because of the language bar, but I'm not sure because I am new! — The preceding unsigned comment was added by TBurmeister (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- It looks to me like the second <languages/> is coming from Template:SWT_Toolkits/en which has not yet been updated to pick up the addition of <noinclude/> made to Template:SWT_Toolkits in Special:Diff/22244825. I think it will all get fixed up when Template:SWT_Toolkits is next marked for translation. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 19:53, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Marking the latest version of the translated template for translation worked! Thanks! TBurmeister (WMF) (talk) 21:39, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
