Bot

edit

Hi. I've flagged the bot but I can still see their changes on Special:RecentChanges. Maybe you should review its code to see if there's a &bot=0 or something else that allows the bot to ignore their bot flag. Regards, —MarcoAurelio 11:39, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@MarcoAurelio: Should be fixed! I wasn't able to add the assert=bot beforehand because it didn't have the flag :) Many thanks! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Complete Reliability, Factual Accuracy Solution

edit
  • Problem: Wikipedia acknowledges that the encyclopedia should not be used as a primary source for research, either academic or informational. According to Academics [1][2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] & Harvard [8] ,Carleton [9],livescience [10] ,forbos [11],guardian [12] ,nature [13] wikipedia articles are "not enough RELIABLE" for academic research/study.some educational institutions have banned it as a primary source while others have limited its use to only a pointer to external sources. [14] [15] [16]. And there is "Lack of methodical fact-checking "...Inaccurate information that is not obviously false may persist in Wikipedia for a long time before it is challenged. [17] .. For a list of hoaxes that have occurred on Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:List of hoaxes on Wikipedia .
  1. Accuracy is the biggest problem about Wikipedia . Anyone can add subtle nonsense  or erroneous information to articles that can take weeks, months or years to be detected and removed (which has been happening since at least 2002). Deliberate hoaxes can also be perpetrated.
  2. Even unregistered users are capable of this. For example, some one can just come and edit this very page and put in "khats r four doughs onlee" or add mention of some unrelated topic: ===like how great pineapple pizza is===
  3. Dross can proliferate, rather than become refined, as rhapsodic authors have their articles revised by ignorant editors.
  • Who would benefit: all wiki reader & editor . 18 billion user every month . pageview 18 billion every month.[18][19][20]
  • Proposed solution:I have a five step solution .

1.(Easy reporting): by Making it much easier for people to report "factual accuracy", misinformation faster. google, google news, facebook [21] ,twitter, bing everyone have a interactive reporting & feedback system .We can have a interactive reporting in wikipedia similar to google feedback [22] (with screenshot ; highlight issue in "yellow" & Black out private information private information) for highlighting a specific block/line . In wikipedia articles , we can have a [Report] link in every section ,beside [Edit] link . In reporting , there should have features for adding ,section dispute template & inline dispute template with Citation needed template & Accuracy disputes category., There are several noticeboards (for  inaccurate content  &  factual inaccuracy) at which accuracy disputes may be listed to gain the views of other editors, particularly the Dispute resolution , Fringe theoriesreliable sourcesno original researchneutral point-of-view, Conflict of Interest and biographies of living persons noticeboards. All report should go there or open a request for mediation (RFM) & Requests for Comment . some report should go here and here.In this way, we have a possibility  to get 18 billion "factual accuracy" report in every month  :) . [23][24][25]

2.(Algorithm): Leverage algorithms and artificial intelligence.Stronger detection Algorithm .Facebook already using machine learning—different algorithms than the ones that drive the Trending section—to try and catch misinformation on the platform . We can have a Algorithm similar to google, facebook [26] [27][28] [29] [30] [31] & twitter  [32] fake news algorithm .When a user create a article with Factual Accuracy/misinformation,claim,Fringe theories , original research ; without proper citation ; then the Algorithm should automatically add section dispute template & inline dispute template with Citation needed template & Accuracy disputes category. ...from reliable sources guideline , we can create a algorithm for "cross check ". when a editor insert a citation then it & will automatically start cross-checking the content with other similar reliable source & will create a " reliability meter ".

3.(Third party verification): Over the last several years, fact checking has come into its own. Led by many respected fact checking organizations like the International Fact-Checking Network, rigorous fact checks are now conducted by more than 100 active sites, according to the Duke University Reporter’s Lab. They collectively produce many thousands of fact-checks a year, examining claims around urban legends, politics, health, and the media itself. Google added a fact check tag on Google News in order to display articles that contain factual information next to trending news items.[33].Facebook using snopes [34] .snopes.com is a well-known resource for validating and debunking such stories in American popular culture, receiving 300,000 visits a day. [35] The Reporters’ Lab at Duke University maintains a database managed by Mark Stencel and Bill Adair of fact checking organizations. The database tracks more than 100 non-partisan organizations around the world. Articles are also examined based upon whether the site examines transparency of sources and methods, tracks political promises, examines all parties and sides, and examines discreet claims and reaches conclusions.

4.(User Right): We can have a user right group "Fact Checker". This user group will have some expertise & tools .Or, this right can be added to Admin group. they will get notified , when point 1.(Easy reporting) will happen , mainly for goodA ,GA &  B  articles. They will try to solve Factual Accuracy from these category as much as they can .

5.(reliability meter): in visual editor cite templates , we can add reliability meter . from the help of point 2.(Algorithm) ; every reader will see "reliability meter " , when they click in the "citation " & in "REFERENCES" .there is third party databases [36] [37] [38] [39] or we can create our own . when Reliability/Accuracy 100-81% ; we will see   . when Reliability/Accuracy 80-61% ; we will see   . when Reliability/Accuracy 60-50% ; we will see   .

@Ahm masum: Hey! I'm sorry to say the proposals phase of the wishlist survey has concluded, and we'll have to decline this for now. I highly suspect the work involved might be too ambitious for our team anyway, if that makes you feel any better. Nonetheless I'm impressed by the research you've put into the idea, and I think it's worth seeking other venues to pursue it. First try consulting your local community, they may be able to help with #4, adding a new "fact checker" user right. These user groups are configurable on a per-wiki basis, and if consensus permits we can help with that. Hope this helps, and sorry my reply could not be more favourable! How to do Oppose/Neutral votes in a numbered list

edit

Do it like so...

  1.   Support
  2.   Support
      Oppose
  3.   Support

Basically, just indent the 'Oppose' and 'Neutral' votes, and then, they won't be counted. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 04:13, 28 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Whatever is less confusing for people, which sifting through the pages appears to be numbering :) We have our own automated system counting supports, so we don't need to indent. I see that's how it was done last year, so numbers it is! Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 04:18, 28 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

wishlist categories

edit

the two categories editing and misc both contain the most proposals and the most votes of all cats. would it still be possible to split this two cats for better overview? in the case of misc it might be possible to split a mail&notifications cat?

btw: user page "became in admin" -> "became an admin" ??

--𝔊 (Gradzeichen DiſkTalk) 11:29, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

We are nearing the end, so I think at think point we might stick it out, if not just to avoid confusion (there are a lot of links to specific proposals on those pages, etc). Better categorization is yet another thing we'll work to improve next year :) Thanks for pointing out the error on my userpage, fixed! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 02:18, 8 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Log capabilities

edit

Hello MusikAnimal (WMF), do you know if the logging system has a "cheap" way to query logs for "what was" values? For example on the move log, given the current title - what was the prior title? On the global rename log, given the current username, what was the prior username? If this would be better directed elsewhere - please let me know. — xaosflux Talk 15:27, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Xaosflux: If you want to use the API, for global renames, there is an "olduser" value in the "params" hash [40]. If you want to query the database directly, parse the log_params of the row in the logging table [41]. From there you can use regex to figure out the old username, something like /olduser";s:\d*:"(.*?)";/, where the (.*?) would capture the username. For the move log, I'm not actually sure how to do it with the API. With the database you'd search within log_params, instead of parsing it [42]. These queries still run reasonably fast, but if by "cheap" you meant easy, maybe the answer is no :) Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:35, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
By cheap I mean fast - as in fast enough to request getting these incorporated to the front end like other log search parameters. — xaosflux Talk 19:56, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: It goes sufficiently fast, I think. I'm sure there's a reason it was omitted from the front end, not sure :/ Seems worth investigating, though! Did you create a phab? I would like to follow MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:58, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I've been searching for one - I can't imagine noone has asked for the move log type before - probably in bugzilla land with an odd title. — xaosflux Talk 21:09, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Possibly phab:T40123 would encompass? — xaosflux Talk 21:14, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, actually it that were resolved it should fix our issue. You were right, an old bugzilla with an odd title :) The issue they are having is indeed about moving pages in general, not just when they've been protected. I have ran into this before, where I had to dig through a bunch of logs before I could figure out who originally protected the page (since it will say "User:NotAnAdmin moved protection settings from A to B"). So annoying MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
OK, phab:T152829 and phab:T152830 created - I'm sure someone will jump right on them :D — xaosflux Talk 04:51, 10 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yep :) The process sort of changed, and there was definitely also some lack of communication. At any rate, we've learned a lot. Next year will go much smoother, I think! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:04, 11 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ha, silly. I was trying to be helpful. :) -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 17:50, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Me too :(( … Is it possible to seperate the support votes section next year? I mean comment, neutral and oppose aren't insignificant, but it is very confusing to find a proposal having 25 entries and only six supporters. Yesterday I wanted to read less supported proposals primarily to save a bit time – nonessential to raise strong supported entries. But that's no fun on a controversial topic, because »only support votes are counted« in any case. Only how many? --Plagiat (talk) 18:22, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
User:Community_Tech_bot/WishlistSurvey/Votes might be helpful. --Vogone (talk) 18:30, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

That report is meant for internal purposes. Guess the word got out :) Not sure if we'll advertise it next year either. We will share a nicely formatting table when voting closes, though. Thanks MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:09, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

#188: Two Factor -> T129747

edit

Sure? Seems to be a mismatch? --𝔊 (Gradzeichen DiſkTalk) 23:28, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

A bot parsed all the proposals to find the phab tickets. Seems there was a bug! :) Thanks for letting me know. We still need to go through all the "related" phabs, as they may or may not be actually relevant (the bot lists any phab that's linked to in the discussion/voting sections). This obviously will take considerable time, and we didn't want to hold back the results from everyone in the interim. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:42, 15 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Plagiat: Wonderful idea, we can definitely re-use these next year, along with other similar messages :) Community Wishlist Survey exists as a redirect to the current survey, but indeed we could start nesting all reusable pages under it. I will try to do this soon, but in the meantime I'll update 2016 Community Wishlist Survey/Lessons learned to suggest we centralize anything that could be reused year to year. Thanks! Stats

About stats: mw:Talk:Wikistats 2.0 Design Project/RequestforFeedback/Round1/Site dashboard. Wikisource stats: https://tools.wmflabs.org/phetools/statistics.php Aubrey (talk) 14:04, 1 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've been using Massviews with your edit for over a week now, and I love it. It is definitely something we needed, so thanks! My only desire now (but I really don't know the depth of the complexity here), would be a combination of Massviews + Topviews: would it be possible to count the views of the books (with subpages) and order them by count? At least weekly/monthly? Right know I'm checking book by book, but it's not sustainable. As you can see our Topviews gives us single pages. Not sure if I already asked you this, in any case thank you again. Aubrey (talk) 23:39, 12 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Aubrey: That would be quite nice! However, this indeed would be very complex. The issue is Topviews pulls from the /top endpoint of the Pageviews API, which only gives us single articles. What I could do is automatically process those pages and subpages, but then the ordering may be off. I'd have to go through all 1,000 top pages to ensure the ordering is correct. Additionally some of the pages the API gives us may not actually be the main page of the book :/ Worst of all, this approach would slow things down tremendously.
One thing I can do, which is not a solution, is include a link on Topviews to view the page and subpages in Massviews. That way you at least don't have to copy/paste the page titles into Massviews one by one. How does that sound? Not ideal, but hopefully an improvement :) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:34, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think this is a low-hanging fruit useful enough. I don't really care about the correct order of the first 1000, but it's important to me to know the core books of Wikisource. As Wikipedia, we follow some kind of power law, so it's important to know which are the most read books we have. Aubrey (talk) 11:10, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Template Wizard script available for testing

edit

Hello. I'm contacting you because you voted for the Infobox Wizard in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey.

The Infobox Wizard has gotten an upgrade - it's now a Template Wizard which works for infoboxes and all other templates. The feature is being developed as an extension (which will allow for localization) but there is a prototype user script which works well.

The Wishlist Team would love it if you could take a few minutes to try the Template Wizard prototype script out and give us feedback on whether it lives up to your expectations. This feedback will help build the script into an extension. To get started, add the following to your Special:MyPage/common.js -

mw.loader.load( 'https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Samwilson/TemplateWizard.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

The Template Wizard will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template. Your thoughts are needed on whether it makes sense for the wizard to be available for all users by default or if there should be a preference for it. If it's a preference, what should the default be? Please leave your feedback here. Thank you! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 22:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Title blacklist effectiveness

edit

Hi. From the backend are you able to see, or monitor the effectiveness of the title blacklist? Is there any sort of measurement possible? Or is it just a blacklist to a blackhole? I know that the powers that be that manage code don't allow any visibility on the hits for privacy reasons (did that battle in my stewardry days). Thanks for whatever info you can provide.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:00, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: There is Special:Log/titleblacklist but it looks like it isn't being populated. I recall someone linking to this log some time ago on IRC, or maybe that was the spam blacklist. I'm sure you could scour production logs to see what pages were blocked by the title blacklist. I am not sure how to do this, though, or if I'm allowed to share such information. Sorry! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 03:14, 21 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is off on the front end (obviously my allusion failed and I couldn't be bothered digging out the phab ticket), so I was uncertain whether it was totally off in special access areas, or what might be available elsewhere for knowledge.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:32, 21 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Could you have a look and maybe remove the tag please? --Omotecho

I was going through 2016 Community wish-list and came upon a proposal where you mentioned this to be not so good.Any particular cases where it gives erroneous outputs or fails to lead to anything?Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 16:31, 23 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Winged Blades of Godric: I don't have an example off hand but yes that tool doesn't always work, or gives the wrong revision, and it can be really slow. The proposal from 2017 still stands, by the way. Hopefully we will be working on it in the next quarter. The service we were planning on using is available now as an unaffiliated browser extension that you can experiment with. I don't think there's any need to re-propose this wish for the new survey, if that's why you're asking. Regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:30, 25 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

The Community Wishlist Survey

edit

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:23, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for notification. Does that mean that I can't also take part in discussions about proposals? --89.25.210.104 19:28, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

No, the removal of the toolbar has nothing to do with Community Tech. We have a strict schedule for the Survey, I am merely enforcing it. I'll note we won't be able to do anything for you until after the survey is over. I think y'all should be showing your disappointment on the relevant Phabricator task at phab:T30856. @Omotecho: Is it possible to use the Translate extension on edit notices? The category pages (Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Citations, etc.), where this would be shown, are not localizable either. Hi! I see there's now separate Community Wishlist Survey category for notifications that has 4 proposals. There are also two other categories with only 3 and 5 proposals. So I wonder, can we also have a separate "Maps" category that would take 4–5 proposals from miscellaneous category and perhaps also this and this? Pikne 08:14, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

"Who Wrote That" project update

edit

Hello. I'm reaching out to you as you participated in the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for "Who Wrote That" project (previously known as "Blame Tool"). The Community Tech team is kicking things off on the project and we have an early-stage mockup available for you to look at. I invite you to follow that project page, where I will be posting periodic status updates for the project. You are also welcome to provide your thoughts on the talk page. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 22:57, 21 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello MusikAnimal, I'm just checking whether you would like the api to output blame information for the entire article or just one section or just one qoute. Please let me know. I am asking because I know you are an active developer of JavaScript tools for English Wikipedia and you maybe know what is needed the most. Gryllida 22:32, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: I assume you mean in reference to the "Who Wrote That" tool? I believe our plan is to use the existing WhoColor browser extension and make it easier to install, along with giving it a UI overhaul. The way it works now is you "enable" the WhoColor mode, and you can hover over whatever text to find out who wrote it and link to the relevant revision. The underlying API exists today at api.wikiwho.net. Regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:42, 22 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Existing tool?

Thanks for pointing me to your Massviews tool. I have been using it to assess Wikiproject Plant articles. Is there a tool that can generate a list from a category like Massviews does, but give article sizes in bytes instead? Abductive (talk) 23:28, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Petscan (petscan: tool) is one of Magnus's toys that can generate or work with lists of various inputs  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
BTW MusikAnimal we could so with some redirects to Pageviews analysis for the variations on the views tools. At least something that pops up in the lookahead searches.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you could use Petscan then export to Page Pile, then input that as the "Source" in Massviews.

@Billinghurst: Are you referring to searching for redirects within Pageviews Analysis? By default, redirects are omitted because most people don't want them. You can enable this feature by going to Settings and choosing "Autocompletion including redirects" as the "Search method". MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 03:17, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support

edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Community wishlist survey translation

edit

Hello, this edit breaks the format of localisation of date (cs).

  • Before (correct): Fáze návrhů: 21. října – 11. listopadu 2019
  • Now (not incorrect, but strange): Fáze návrhů: říjen 21 – listopad 11, 2019

(see use of genitive, ordinal numeral and word ording). But I can't find where to repair it. JAn Dudík (talk) 20:43, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@JAn Dudík: Thanks for the heads up. I think Special:Diff/19483446 fixed the genitive issue. Can you confirm? As for the ordering and formatting, #dateformat is supposed to use whatever is set in your on-wiki preferences. Does the format match what you see at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering? If you have "No preference", I believe it uses the wiki's default, which on Meta would be "[month] [day], [year]". MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I didn't find it in that page previously. Bu still not OK, because of missing ordinal numeral and wrong ordering.
  • before: říjen 21
  • now: října 21
  • should be: 21. října
I have in global preferences correct date format (21. října).
JAn Dudík (talk) 18:16, 23 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Okay I think I finally nearly got it fully localized, thanks to {{date}}. Let me know if anything still looks off. Regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:42, 24 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Before you put a lot more work into it, let me remind you that we are only looking for proposals that directly relate to Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikispecies, Wikiveristy, Wikivoyage and Wiktionary. Your proposal appears to be more about Commons, or a global wish. Hence, it may not qualify for this year's survey :( To learn more, see the descriptions of the new format and guidelines on the survey page. Removing proposal

edit

Okay, so this went exactly the way I predicted it. My suggestion was summarily removed from public view on technicalities. Great way of ensuring transparency and openness. Sheesh.

Look. You guys advertise with a large Wiki-wide banner that you invite participation.

Keeping my ticket open would have been a great way of showcasing that you hear the multitudes of editors worried about the code editor going away. I gave you the easiest job ever of the "do nothing" kind (except, I guess, moderate it for profanity and flame wars). Keeping it open would have given you an instant win, and good PR to boot - our Wiki overlords might actually be listening when we tell you that no improvement is worth losing the plaintext code editor for.

But no, you immediately took action that cannot be viewed in any other light than "oh, that's inconvenient, let's bury it so we can keep on pretending everybody's going to love our new mandatory new wikivisuals".

Well, it doesn't matter. Each and every time you invite participation you're going to hear that removing the code editor is absolutely the wrong thing to do. In the end, I realize you (the larger you, I have no clue as to your role, MusicAnimal) are going to remove it anyway, much like how Microsoft is slowly removing each and every way to control Windows for us "cheap" home users. So the only remaining question is - will you be able to claim openness with a straight face while doing it?

Not really very heartfelt regards, CapnZapp (talk) 11:21, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sorry you feel that way. I have no idea what gave you that idea that VisualEditor will be forced on to you. There will always be a wikitext editor. If we knew wikitext editing was going away, we wouldn't be accepting wishes that ask for improvements to it. Regardless, the Wishlist Survey isn't the place for politics. It's a means to ask our team (Community Tech) to build new features and tools. Your proposal didn't ask for any changes, so I archived it. You can learn more about the survey by reviewing the documentation. Thanks for your understanding, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:23, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Is __NOEDITSECTION__ really needed on Community Wishlist Survey pages?

edit

Hello. Currently the Convenient Discussions script doesn't work on the Community Wishlist Survey pages, although it could—if you remove __NOEDITSECTION__ and its surrounding code from Community Wishlist Survey/Proposal header and Community Wishlist Survey/Category header, the "Discussion" section (but not its parent section) gets an "edit" link that is fetched by the script, and from it the script knows which page to edit. I've tested that on User:Jack who built the house/Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Anti-harassment. So is hiding the "edit" link next to the subsection headers really needed? Jack who built the house (talk) 19:36, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@MusikAnimal (WMF), hi! :) What do you think about it? Iniquity (talk) 10:06, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jack who built the house @Iniquity   Done Apologies for the late response! I don't actually remember what NOEDITSECTION was for… but there was definitely a reason. In my testing just now the links always go to the right place (e.g. no conflict when the bot shuffles the order of the proposals). So I think we're all set :) Sorry again for taking so long to get to this. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:37, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Late wishlist submission

edit

Hi! I didn't notice there was an 1800 UTC condition on the November 30 submission deadline, while I was updating my proposal with some last-minute suggestions from my friends. And then I realized my edits get blocked by the abuse filter. I'm wondering if it's still possible to get our proposal published a few hours past its deadline? Thanks! --TechyanTalk22:54, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Techyan I'm afraid it's too late now, but I can say that Community Tech (who operates and works off of the survey) wouldn't have been able to assist in your situation anyway. We are a team of engineers; what you need is infrastructure, financial and legal support from WMF. We can't provide any of those things :( That said, I think it's still a great idea and I wish you all good luck with the initiative! global-search scraps

edit

Running the search https://global-search.toolforge.org/?q=%22Sarhan+Shamran%22&namespaces=&title= brings up articles from small wikis that were deleted in 2020. Is there a simple means to achieve a clean? If it is a phab ticket, then what sort of information are you wanting to see?  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:22, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst It's definitely some issue with the CloudElastic search, which I can't help with. If you could create a task with the global-search tag that'd be great, and I'll spread the word to the CloudElastic people (it doesn't seam they have a Phabricator tag). Simply stating the issue and linking to the results, as you have here, is sufficient. Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:45, 29 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@TheDJ I'm done now. It all looks amazing, thank you! The one last thing I wanted to do, which I've since undone since it inexplicably broke things, was to simply change the accepted values for the |phase= parameter at Template:Community Wishlist Survey/heading-phases. In our other templates, the corresponding values would be proposal, review, voting and results (as opposed to proposal-phase, etc.). I just wanted to make it consistent, but it doesn't really matter because this is the only transclusion of that template we'll probably ever use, so it can stay the way it is. Thanks again for helping make the page more mobile-friendly! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:56, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

@JoeNMLC Hello! A kind note that the intention is for the community to manage the configuration without the need to consult the bot operator. I'm a volunteer too, so I will try to help, just letting you know :) As per the top of w:User:Community Tech bot/Popular pages, the troubleshooting tips should be reviewed. Using w:Special:PageAssessments as suggested, I see that "Saint Lucia" is not the actual name of the WikiProject. If I put in an article that I know is part of that WikiProject, such as w:Elizabeth II, I see all the listed WikiProjects, and skimming through I see the correct project name is "Caribbean/WikiProject Saint Lucia". So that would be the fix there. You can use this same strategy to see if any of the other projects need fixing. They often get renamed, and no one thinks to update the Popular Pages bot config.
WikiProject Abandoned Drafts I think can be retired. The bot does not report draft or userspace articles and never has. The few results the bot ever showed presumably were from the short time someone moved those pages to the mainspace but didn't remove it from WP:Abandoned Drafts (or the WP template didn't automatically update yet). Drafts aren't indexed anyway, so I don't think there's a good chance any of them would ever be "popular", so to speak.
It sounds like you've figured out how to fix the other entries, so I won't reply to those, but if you're stuck on any let me know and I can try to help debug the issue. The edit requests you filed will be serviced in due time (if not by me in my volunteer capacity, by another int-admin). Thanks, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 05:56, 5 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pageviews by country

edit

Hello. As I visited the thread about the proposal for the addition of pageviews by country, I would like to have a better explanation about the non-public available data that you referenced. Are those statistics, although recorded like the other ones, not released publicly due to user privacy? I meant, of course, the recording to take place if this could be added as done in Wikistats.

Of course I understand the reason why this idea cannot be implemented, however it would be very useful for the community if this could become a reality.NikosLikomitros (talk) 21:17, 17 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I recall this, but I can't seem to find the proposal. Could you give me a link? Anyway, pageviews by country already exists, which I assume you're aware of. I believe you're asking about pageviews by country for individual pages? This information is stored (temporarily, I believe) in the Analytics cluster, but it is not exposed -- as you suspected -- for privacy reasons. For example, say you check the pageviews by country for an article and you see that 100% of the pageviews are from Uganda. That would expose where the author and all editors of the page live, since they would have to view the page to edit it. There may be ways to anonymize or limit publishing of this data (say only after N pageviews are registered, or after N countries), but judging by how anonymized even the existing pageviews-by-country data is (it's actually a range, not exact numbers), I doubt we'll see per-article pageviews by country go public. This matches my understanding, but note that I am not on the Data Engineering team who maintains this data and makes these decisions, so I could be wrong. If you need more insight I suggest contacting them directly. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:03, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Manual update for WikiProject Tambayan Philippines/Popular pages

edit

Hi! I believe I may have caused the popular pages report page for WikiProject Tambayan Philippines not to update the page. Is it possible if you could have the bot manually update the reports page for the month of August? Thank you! Ganmatthew (talk) 15:38, 9 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Your change to the level 2 heading would have broken it (you've since fixed it), but it looks like the bot hasn't gotten to Tambayan Philippines yet. At current there are a few more WikiProjects to process. Give it a few days, and if there's still no update, I can run a one-off report for you. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:52, 9 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thank you! Ganmatthew (talk) 05:03, 10 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Update to commentlinks.js gadget

edit

I am about to update my comment links gadget to link the comment's timestamp rather than add a separate [ link ] button. If you prefer the old style, that gadget will be available at commentlinks-v1.js. As before, this gadget is experimental and may stop working at any time, see T275729 for the task to make this a proper feature. Thanks, ESanders (WMF) (talk) 12:16, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Article lists

edit

@Bluerasberry: FWIW, I saw Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Miscellaneous/Improve PagePile or create new tool for article lists for communication metrics, working on GULP implementation at the moment, early days. --Magnus Manske (talk) 11:33, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Magnus Manske: Great thanks I am promoting the idea. If it gets selected then I hope you can sync with community tech. If you did have a working solution then Community Tech can do more front end. Thanks. Bluerasberry (talk) 12:27, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Archiving of Proposal

edit

Hi,

I realize that I didn't respond to your ping, and I wanted to apologize and inquire if there is anyway to unarchive the conversation? Normally wouldn't get into it on the Wiki for obvious reasons, but my Dad passed away less than two weeks ago rather unexpectedly, and I've just now had the free time to check my Wikipedia app, which for some reason failed to serve me the notification of your comments until after the app had opened.

I know it's unusual, and a bit of an extraordinary circumstance, but at the very least, I wanted to let you know that I didn't just ignore you!

Foxtrot620 (talk) 12:20, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

No worries! Thanks for taking the time to write me :) I was away on holiday when you sent this, unfortunately, so I also want you to know that I didn't just ignore you! I'm sorry we didn't get your proposal tended to in time. Look forward to seeing your ideas in future surveys. You can also store your ideas long-term at Community Wishlist Survey/Sandbox, if you wish. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:52, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

AddMe and CWS on mobile

edit

Hi. Not sure if this is was intentional, but the gadget is not working on mobile. Seems like there are some check in the code for mobile, but not sure what the post-edit module does.

Steps just in case :)

  1. https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2023/Wikisource
  2. Click Support.
  3. Nothing happens (nothing in JS console too).

The same behaviour seem to be both in mobile browsers (Samsung browser, Firefox) and on PC (Firefox desktop). Nux (talk) 11:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Now resolved, of course it's too late for the survey :( Thanks for reporting, nonetheless! I was unfortunately on holiday when this all happened. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:49, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. At least it will work next time :-) Nux (talk) 22:56, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Community Tech bot's proposal shuffling

edit

Hi MusikAnimal! I noticed that @Community Tech bot has a task that shuffles proposals in the Community Wishlist Survey. I made a module that can do this without edits to the page; here's a usage example. Would it be possible to add the module to the survey pages and change the bot to simply purge pages instead of editing them? Best, EpicPupper (talk) 21:25, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@EpicPupper Thanks for this! I recall @Anomie made a similar module some years ago for this same purpose. I have nothing against using that solution, but doing so would require a non-trivial rewrite of some of the bot's code. All I can say is I can keep this in mind for the next survey :) For now, I need a break from all things survey-related! Thanks again and apologies for the delayed reply. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:32, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
edit

Greetings MusikAnimal, Below are two sections after the May bot run here. Some of the 2021 WPs have run successfully and are "Done". For others, I show a note of changes I made in the hopes of correcting their issue. Sorry for the length of this message but I wanted to cover all of these.

For WikiProject Assessments (here) there is an option to do "Manual Update" in addition to the regulary daily WP 1.0 bot assessment run. For Popular pages Bot, is it possible to request a single WikiProject update? Instead of waiting for next month's run.

Revisiting these WPs (from 2021)

edit

Update as of May 2023

edit

From this month's Bot run:

  • U.S. Roads - these states may have been skipped regarding change? WikiProject banner shell - not sure, so I've not done anything for these

Thank you for reading this long message. I'm hoping above changes will solve most WPs that are skipped with the monthly Popular pages bot. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 10:40, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @JoeNMLC, thanks for your efforts to fix these! I will take a closer look soon, but in case you hadn't already, please try the troubleshooting tips. Namely, verify entries using w:Special:PageAssessments. I tried the first one you said that wasn't done (Adult Swim task force), and I see there are no pages under that name. At w:Talk:Adult Swim for example, I don't see any mention of this task force. Perhaps it's been removed?
Tropical cyclones also has no pages, and that project definitely does seem to exist. So my next step (as per the troubleshooting tips) is to enter an example article at w:Special:PageAssessments to see what projects it belongs to. There I was able to discover the project was renamed to Weather/WikiProject Tropical cyclones, so that's the issue.
In my wanderings around Wikipedia, I did find here info about "Renaming a WikiProject". While I was not involved in that process, is it possible Step 5 needs attention? Clearly written instructions but unsure what action(s) if any are needed next. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 04:45, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

For Popular pages Bot, is it possible to request a single WikiProject update – No, but that's a great idea! I'll try to look into this soon. Additionally, I'd like to improve reporting by the bot so that it's easier to see and understand what, if anything, went wrong. That's kind of a big project but given how many people get confused with the current system, I think it's worth the effort.
I'm at a Hackathon now and can look into this a little more tomorrow, but I'd appreciate if interested parties could assist with the debugging as it's quite tedious and usually involves nothing more than edits to the config, which can be done wholly without intervention from me or my team (which is the idea :). For any changes to the config, you can make a protected edit request at w:User talk:Community Tech bot/Popular pages config.json.
Warm regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 15:21, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question - early June 2023

edit

Greetings MusikAnimal, Today I submitted 3, then two more, "Protected edit request" for some of the above WikiProjects. The monthly bot is processing the "B"s (Biography sub-projects) as I write this now. I am wondering if the bot will pickup those changes? JoeNMLC (talk) 02:13, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I'm not sure! There's a chance it will, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:29, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@JoeNMLC Note however, if you weren't already aware, some of those WikiProjects are quite small and thus you can get pageviews data for them quickly in realtime using Massviews. I.e. for en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Andhra Pradesh you can use [45].
Meanwhile en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Popular Culture is marked as inactive. Are you a member of this project, and will you be making regular use of the popular pages report? If you are then all is well; what I would like to avoid however is slowing down the bot with a bunch of popular pages reports that no one will ever read. In the past, I've had to occasionally go in and remove projects to reduce the run time.
I will make some changes to the same effect to your talk page banner that you propose below (which I do think is a great idea, thank you for creating it!). MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:37, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi MusikAnimal -Firstly, thanks for your update to the popular pages config Talk. I was not aware that Massviews tool could do that. For those small wikiprojects slowing the bot down, instead of an outright WP delete from the config, it might be useful to post a one-liner on those WPs replacing the "Popular pages link" with something about the Massviews tool, like what you have written for the Tm-box. I'll see what I can think of in the next few days. Cheers, JoeNMLC (talk) 16:15, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
edit

Hi MusikAnimal, Recently at my Sandbox I created message boxes for possible posting on the config's Talk page. As the bot-operator, I though to share with you & ask for your feedback. In addition, I did notify on the Talk page, and am looking forward to comments. Hopefully greater clarity will mean fewer skipped WikiProjects. Regards, JoeNMLC (talk) 17:25, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

As per above, I've made a few changes to add more information I think is relevant. Thanks for starting this! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 14:47, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for Popular pages Talk update. That Massviews tool looks to be an important and useful feature, especially for those small WikiProjects (that maybe can be removed from the config file). On the PP config Talk page, I cloned "Iteration" into "Second iteration" including the Massviews info you have written. Cheers! JoeNMLC (talk) 16:22, 6 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Template:Community Wishlist Survey/Proposal

edit

Good day, able to fix the category transclusion issue for the template? Original code attempts to use the subpagename to categorise but it doesn't work for translation pages as the translation language, such as /de, /fr, are the subpage name instead. E.g. Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Admins and patrollers/Add ability to delete your own files without needing an admin/Proposal uses the template but Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Admins and patrollers/Add ability to delete your own files without needing an admin/Proposal/ko does not have any categories. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 05:42, 21 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Apologies for the delayed reply as I was out the last few weeks. I believe I have fixed this. Let me know if you notice any issues. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:23, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question about Massviews to help improve the documentation

edit

Hi

I had a question about Massviews to help researchers/partner organisations use it (I want to write some documentation to help them), I wondered if you knew the answer?

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Pageviews_Analysis#How_to_use_massviews_to_search_for_all_English_Wikipedia_pages_which_use_references_from_a_source?

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 02:51, 6 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I was out on holiday. Looks like you got the answer you needed! I saw the task you filed as well about sharing URLs and I'll be looking into that soon. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:04, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @MusikAnimal (WMF)! I'm working on a new WikiProject now that'll be launching in Arabic, English, and French and I was interested in adding it to the index. Now the instructions are open and shut for enWP, but I noticed no WikiProjects have been added to the Arabic .json page for a long long time, so I'm just double checking that it'd be okay to edit source it directly. Thanks! Assem Khidhr (talk) 06:36, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Assem Khidhr Yes of course! However Arabic Wikipedia manages their config is up to them. At quick glance it seems there isn't much of a process if any at all, so if you're able to edit it, go for it :) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 00:37, 11 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Articles counter

edit

Hello @MusikAnimal (WMF). I am not really familiar with coding. Is there any way I can have an automatic and updated counter of articles in this page: [46]? I want to add in the monthly bulletin of how much articles we have reached so far from that page. Please advice me on that. Thank you so much. CyberTroopers (talk) 08:04, 11 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Implement and adapt Community_Wishlist/Intake to other wikis

edit

Hi, @MusikAnimal (WMF). I came across the wish request form and realized that it could be really useful for Wikivoyage when we're creating new articles. However, I'm having trouble finding the code needed to import and use it on eswikivoyage. Do you think you could lend a hand in moving the form and customizing it for our project? Thank you! Galahad (sasageyo!)(esvoy) 03:39, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Galahad The form was custom built using Codex and Vue.js. The source code can be found at gitlab:repos/commtech/wishlist-intake. There's a lot of stuff in there that would not be applicable to your purposes, so while you can use our code as a guide, I recommend mostly going off of the Codex docs and building something from scratch. Hope this helps, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
