Wikimania 2013 BiddingEdit

Dear editor,

You are getting this message because you have edited a Wikimania bidding page for 2013.

Many have said that the bidding needs to be brought forward to give teams longer to organise the conference, to enable it to be run more professionally and smoother and to give teams more time to arrange things like sponsorship which can take significant amounts of time. This year an active effort is being made to bring the start of official bidding to before the fundraiser (around September/October, to have a longer bidding period that will run till the end of January and a decision made by the end of February.

Although this clashes with the fundraiser, the significantly longer bidding period is to give those teams from chapters involved in the fundraiser more time. It should hopefully allow teams to create better and more detailed bids. Going forward the idea would be that eventually the bidding would occur entirely before the fundraiser. I though it best to not jump immediately to this to not catch teams off guard.

Just to recap: Bidding will start in September/October and not in January

Any thoughts and comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Wikimedia Venezuela bylaws questionsEdit

Hello Jewbask,

I see many unanswered questions here: Talk:Wikimedia_Venezuela/Bylaws. Could you respond to the latest questions and comments from Lodewijk? If this is difficult because of the language, we could translate the comments into Spanish.

That seems to be one of the reasons for the delay. Nevertheless, the issue of VZ chapter will be considered this month by the Wikimedia Board. SJ talk | translate   01:39, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedbackEdit

Hey Maor X,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Spanish using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Amical GA minutesEdit

Hello! The minutes are not public, since we treated several points, and most of them are not directly related to AffCom. Furthermore there is personal data which can't be made public. However I will just copy you the point where we treated the approval of new bylaws (translation is kindly provided :P)

  • 5) Aprovació dels nous estatuts: S'aproven per assentiment els canvis d'estatuts referents a les propostes fetes per l'Affiliations Comittee perquè l'associació sigui reconeguda com a Thematic Organization.
  • 5) Approval of new bylaws: bylaws changes are approved with no objections. Those changes reflect the recommendations issued by the Affiliations Comittee so Amical can be aproved as Thematic Organization.

To sum up, bylaws changes were approved unanimously. I hope this answers your request. Cheers --Arnaugir (talk) 22:04, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia Chapters ResearchEdit

Hello Carlos,

I am writing to you as the Vice-Chair of Affiliation Com. I am running a research for Wikimania 2013 (partially for WCA, partially for myself) regarding Wikimedia Chapters. You can see a snap description here.

My goal is to collect and present quantitative data about chapters and the local organizations in the global movement. It is a lot of work for one person and maybe just too much for one volunteer - this is why I am asking for help.

Do you know if members of the Aff Com or some dedicated WMF employees could help with filling the tables or pointing out / sending proper documents? Certainly I am looking for proper published data and I am asking particular chapters for answers - however there are already surveys collected by WMF and probably this should be the best initial source of the knowledge.

Any help: like directing me to a right person, pointing to good data sources or helping with filling the forms (especially with Venezuela!) will be appreciated. :)

Best Regards, aegis maelstrom δ 16:34, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks a lot! :) And please, let me know if you have some ideas. I guess that some WMF employees should have at least some data I am looking for... :)

Requests for comments on Wikimedia user groups approval process and agreementsEdit

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee is requesting comments on the approval process and agreements for Wikimedia user groups.

Wikimedia user groups are groups of Wikimedia users who support and promote the Wikimedia projects in the offline world by organizing meetups and other projects. The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee's responsibilities include approval of new Wikimedia user groups.

The committee will seek community input until Friday, May 1, 2015. The committee will then review the community's input, and publish the new process and agreements on Meta-Wiki. The committee will again seek community input approximately six months after any changes are adopted to gauge effectiveness and if any additional changes are necessary.

Please see the RFC page on Meta-Wiki for more information and to provide feedback.

Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing listEdit

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee is pleased to introduce the launch of the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list, which is basically a place for all the affiliates (chapters, thematic organizations, user groups) to discuss issues related to affiliates, make announcements to other affiliates, and collaborate on activities and community-wide events. The idea is to help facilitate the dialogue affiliates across our movement, plus collaborative discussions like community-wide activities, joint edit-a-thons, regional conferences, blog/report posts, or other communications from affiliates.

Each Wikimedia movement affiliate is allocated three spots on the mailing list. All affiliates may contact the Affiliations Committee to request additional spots if needed.

Please find a bit more information on Meta-Wiki and do not hesitate to contact the Affiliations Committee if you have further questions.

2015 Affiliations Committee call for candidatesEdit

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups – is looking for new members!

The main role of the Affiliations Committee is to guide groups of volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and advise the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees on issues connected to chapters, thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.

The committee consists of twelve members, six of whom are selected every twelve months for staggered two-year terms.

Key skills

Being a part of the Affiliations Committee requires communication with volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill sets in our members. The key skills and experience that we look for in candidates are:

  • Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of volunteers worldwide.
  • Willingness to process applications through a set, perhaps bureaucratic process.
  • Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliations, and similar questions.
  • Availability of up to 5 hours per week, and the time to participate in a monthly ~2 hour voice/video meeting.
  • International orientation.
  • Very good communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work and communicate with other languages and cultures.
  • Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF.
  • Knowledge of different legal systems and experience in community building and organising are a plus.
  • Effective communication skills in other languages are a major plus.
  • Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus.
  • Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.

We are looking for people who are not afraid of the workload and are motivated by helping other volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission around the world.

Selection process

As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2015 member selection process will include a public review and comment period. All applications received by the committee will be posted on Meta (at Affiliations Committee/Candidates/2015), and the community will be invited to provide comments and feedback about each candidate.

At the end of the public comment period, the applications will be voted on by the members of the committee who are not seeking re-election, taking into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisors, WMF staff and board liaisons, and the community. A final decision will be made by mid-January 2016, with new members expected to join later that month.

How to apply

If you are interested in joining the committee, please send an application to by 31 December 2015. You will get a confirmation that your application was received.

Your application should include the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your contact information (including e-mail address and username)
  • A statement describing your relevant experience, skills, and motivation for joining the committee.

Your statement will be published for community review and feedback, so please do not include any information that you are not comfortable sharing.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me and/or the committee as a whole. We are happy to chat or have a phone call with anyone about our work if this helps them decide to apply. Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you are interested!

Hola, Maor. ¿Sabes algo? Tunisian ArabicEdit

As shown in the new edition of Ethnologue, Tunisian Arabizi (One of the Latin Scripts used for Tunisian) has been recognized as a common script for Tunisian Arabic. As it is the most used script in Internet, we will use it in Wp/aeb. I have slightly modified this method so that it can be converted to Arabic Script. I have created a script converter for Tunisian Arabizi and I will implement it with explanations very soon. However, I need to test it before. So, you are invited to change the name of Tunisian Arabic in Latin Script into Tounsi and change the editing software of Tunisian Arabic Wikipedia into Left to Right format. I can really use some help at ladwikiEdit

Hi, Maor. I can really use some help at ladwiki. Universal Life is around some, but not a huge amount. And Marrovi, who has sparked a lot of cross-wiki controversy, is adding a ton of material. I can handle the "wikignome" tasks at ladwiki, and can occasionally handle some content matters. But as you know, I don't really speak JS. I can't tell if Marrovi's contributions are good JS, and I can't (always) tell when he's adding facts and when he's publishing theories. So if you think you could come over to ladwiki from time to time and have a look—especially at some of his BLP articles, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks.

Important caveat: I'm not looking to get rid of Marrovi, and plenty of his contributions have value. I strongly hope I don't need to mass-delete what he's done. So proceed with a soft touch, but do help me understand what's kosher and what's not. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:29, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

A couple of additional thoughts on your WM Israel project to bring more editors to lad projectsEdit

Hi. Just a couple of other thoughts:

It seems to me that there are a handful of other things that would be worth doing for more publicity for our projects. In particular, I've been thinking that we could use a handful of mentions around Hebrew Wikipedia, including (among others):

  • Nearly all references to the language in Hebrew Wikipedia call it "לאדינו". You should speak with Universal Life about this, but if speakers themselves prefer the name "ֿגֿודיו־איספניול" (or something like that), would it help to try to move some of the references in hewiki to that name? Or is לאדינו too ingrained in Hebrew right now.
  • There is no article in hewiki at all about ladwiki. (Compare, for example, en:Judaeo-Spanish Wikipedia. There needs to be one.
  • I have subtly tried to make sure that on other Jewish-language projects, there are mutual mentions of projects in Judeo-Spanish, Yiddish and Hebrew. See, for example, yi:הויפט זייט and lad:La Primera Hoja. There is not a direct place to do that on the main page of hewiki, but I run into resistance at, for example, he:ויקיפדיה:תבנית/אולם דיונים (at the section {{ויקיפידיות}}). Look, I understand the reluctance per se, but I'd like people to see that ladwiki exists.
  • It would probably be good to have an article on Incubator, too, with mentions of he and lad projects there, and perhaps a mention of lad content at Wikisource. But those would be lower priorities.

I`ll provide other ideas as they occur to me. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:41, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow upEdit

Hello Maor X,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

New respond:Well... First of all this "grandfather clause" is causing a discrimination. I really can't understand that Bosnian standard has its own Wiki and Montenegrin doesn't. Secondly - I guess a compromise would be creating common Serbian/Montenegrin Wiki with possibility of 2 articles existing - one in Serbian standard and second in Montenegrin one. That would sort of solve the problem. Because, even if I know that Wikipedia isn't (usually) a reliable source for citing, it's not fair that Montenegrins can't use the Wiki material in their own standard. --2409:8902:9301:F7F8:661C:FD23:FBA4:F48 00:54, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Wikimania AmbassadorEdit

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!
