Thank you so much, @Kalogeropoulos:. However, the text that needed translation was the Specific for Swedish Cyprus Expedition images. Do you have time to look at that one too?
BTW, I transferred your translation to Connected_Open_Heritage/Get_Involved/Volunteer_Tasks/Image_use_invitation/el. Thanks again! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:04, 26 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

WikiGap edit

Dear Eric, thanks for the invitation to take part in WikiGap Challenge. We are running WikiGap in Ukraine and our local page informs about it as well. Still, there few moments on the challenge that do not cause excitement. Challenge is set up to consider only numbers, this makes the process of defining winners really easy. But what about the quality? There was a lack of information on the 2019 Number one winner contribution, so I made my own observations especially given that he was from my Wikipedia and language was not a problem. User:Андрій Гриценко produced only translations, many of them were translations of the translations. Thus we got a big batch of bad-quality translations that still ned to be fixed. Not much fun. So, It would be really nice to think about the mechanism of preventing participants from rushing with producing numbers to get the prize. One of the possible ways is to consider the number of created articles per day. Do you think it is possible to create 40 good articles (even if stubs) per day? That what we could witness last year. I don't know about the human intellectual potential with this, but number 30-40 seems beyond it to me. and one can reach this only producing automated translations. And another thing I would like to see at the challenge result is at least some information about what kind of women roles challenge winners were promoting and contributing. I was really curious about that and made my own research. 42% of articles out of 360 were about actresses- a profession that is far from being unpopular as for women, as for Wikipedia contributors (but this is only an opinion, and I understand that the challenge does not make difference between an article about actress and article about scientist). I hope you will bring more "behind the numbers" information this year. Today we have many tools for this. None the less thank you and Wikimedia Sweden for the opportunities and motivation you give to the Wikipedians all over the world!--Anntinomy (talk) 17:05, 19 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Anntinomy: Thanks so much for your input! We have been thinking a lot on how to make the barriers low while still maintaining decent quality, a balance which is quite hard to do – especially since our experience so far is that challenges are encouraging for newcomers, who may lack the experience on how to do long and deep articles. We will evaluate this closely after the challenge is over, and I would be happy to have your inputs and thoughts in that phase! Best Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 09:16, 25 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia meet token edit

Hi Eric. Would you be so kind to create a WM meet token for me. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:20, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Billinghurst. Yes, of course! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 08:38, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I sent you an email with the token. Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 08:50, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Could not create account as the token supplied was invalid. and I did use Chrome (second time, FF first time).  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:33, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hm, weird. I will try with a new one. Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:33, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
It hates me The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there is an error in the application. which is the error that I got in FF. I will try again later, though maybe I have blockers in place stopping its comms. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:41, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hm, weird. @Amir Sarabadani (WMDE): Do you know what might happen? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:43, 12 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst Hey, please ping my volunteer account (I'm doing this in my volunteer capacity). I completely missed the ping and just saw it by chance. Is it still broken? let me work on it. Amir (talk) 18:54, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst The recent restarts of VMs in the cloud broke it. It should be fixed now. Sorry for inconvenience Amir (talk) 19:01, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ladsgroup: Thanks for the reply. I still need a valid working token to try again. I had temporarily left it. Sorry to be a needy pain.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:48, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst no worries at all. I sent you a new token. Amir (talk) 22:59, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Ladsgroup: Success. Thanks for what you do in both paid and unpaid capacities. (Apologies for the muddy foot prints Eric)  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:19, 21 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Page base origin edit

Hello Eric Luth,

May I ask you where the text of WikiGap Challenge/Participants you just created comes from? Actually, it has several (minor) issues I have fixed on several pages, but I would like to fix the original template in order all user who copy it would copy a correct code. --Pols12 (talk) 19:44, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pols12. I have written the text originally and copied it from previous years' edition of the challenge. What are the issues? I cannot see any edits on the page from you? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 07:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh! OK, thank you: I did not find previous year version.
I will address issues later: for semantics, we should use real title syntax (equal signs) for titles instead of generic span and semi-colon hack.

Good day, Eric Luth (WMSE)! I would like to add to your list of articles one about Tatar journalist, given that this area is not covered so well. Is it possible to add this article?--Фәрһад (talk) 10:37, 6 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Фәрһад. What do you think about this solution? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:11, 10 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Eric Luth (WMSE), yes, it is good! But maybe it would be better to put this list on the main page with a subtitle "Articles without bonus points". Otherwise, they will be seen by much fewer participants.--Фәрһад (talk) 05:53, 11 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I made a proposal on the list page. Does that work? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:33, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

WikiGap edit

Hi Eric. After reading "Only 20% of Wikipedia’s Biographies Are About Women — #WikiGap Wants to Change That", I've been looking at the Meta pages on WikiGap. I noticed that we have had an unusually high number of new members on Women in Red over the past few days and was wondering whether some of these might have resulted from your call for them to register with the project in accordance with the instructions on Wiki4Women which you link to. It would also be interesting to have more information about the responses you have been getting, in particular the suggestions for new articles about women on the EN wiki. We are of course also happy to help any new users who would like to contribute to the EN wiki. Perhaps you could also put something together for Signpost.--Ipigott (talk) 12:02, 11 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ipigott! Yes, maybe that's the case? That would be a wonderful development, should it be so! I'd be happy to involve WiR in how to work with the result. From both social media campaigns and the proposals from GC above, we will compile spreadsheets that will eventually be cleaned and uploaded to Wikidata.
I'm not sure how Signpost works, but sure! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:28, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

WikiGap/#BelarusGap edit

Hej Eric! Could you or may I add the following message somewhere on this page:

"Dear Participants of WikiGap ! I have a pleasure to announce you, that if you wrote articles about BELARUSIAN women och women related to Belarus between the 8 th of March and 8 th of April (in a language other than Belarusian), you have a chance to win a special prize from People’s Embassy of Belarus in Sweden ! Just add a tag #BelarusGap after the Number of Points as I done here The winner is a participant who wrote the most number of this kind of articles. Please note, that this is NOT a concurrent Project to the official WikiGap, but just a part of it! Best Regards --Lesnas ättling (talk) 08:10, 3 April 2021 (UTC) "Reply

Hi Lesnas ättling! I am back at the office tomorrow. I will see how best to solve it then (realizing that it is very short left of the challenge at that point)! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:24, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Information about WikiGap. edit

Hello, Eric! My name is Asareel and I am so excited to get the opportunity to hopefully get information from you regarding the WikiGap campaign for an essay we are working on for the Women in Red project of the English Wikipedia site. I think I can find most of the statistical data on the effort but if there is anything else you can think of that would be beneficial please let me know. I am mainly looking for any biographical information like exactly when the project began and particular facts or statistical data showing the goals and impact of the campaign that would be useful for anyone seeking projects, task forces, campaigns and initiatives supporting women and women related topics on our various Wiki-sites. Very recently several of our editors expressed the desire to try and pull all of our various projects in an essay style list in the hopes of combining our efforts to increase visibility of our shared concerns about the gender gap and gender bias that still exists on Wikipedia. We feel this essay will offer the opportunity to guide new editors and experienced editors, alike, to all of the projects that support women on Wikipedia and Wikimedia in the hopes of bolstering activity and the exchange of ideas. We don't want one ounce of creativity being wasted simply because of the lack of knowledge that our projects exist and we see this essay being a way to educate editors on how to get involved and give them the opportunity to pick where they feel their efforts would be most impactful. If there is someone else that would be better to speak with concerning this effort then please guide me in the right direction. Thank you for all you continually do and I look forward to your response. --ARoseWolf (talk) 17:36, 23 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@ARoseWolf: Happy to help! Do you want a reply here or would you like a quick chat? Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:33, 27 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Probably easier to just to discuss it here but you could also discuss it @ Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red if you would like. --ARoseWolf 12:51, 28 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ARoseWolf: Got it, thanks. Apologies for my slow reply.
Some background information can be found here. The long-term goal of the campaign is to close the gender gap on Wikipedia. We are trying to achieving this by lowering the barriers for people to take part, organizing events and developing support material to make it easier for everyone to create women biographies on Wikipedia. So far, about 60,000 biographies have been created and edited, during events or campaigns taking place in more than 70 countries. Several thousands editors have taken part – but we don't know an exact number of unique participants. Please tell me if you have any further questions! Events before 8 March edit

Hello Eric! I have a doubt about events before 8 March for the WikiGap Challenge editathon! I am participating in "Feminism & Folklore" in multiple languages. It's running from 1st February to 31st March. The timing of both the editathons overlaps for some time. Are the participant articles of that Feminism & Folklore created/improved/expanded/developed before 8 March be also participant articles of WikiGap Challenge editathon? Haoreima (talk) 04:45, 8 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Haoreima! Thanks for the question. The possibility to add articles to the WikiGap Challenge that were written in editathons prior to the start of the Challenge refers to edithathons under the WikiGap umbrella (for example if you took part in a WikiGap event in your country / digitally, but this event was before the start of the WikiGap Challenge, then you can add it here). I don't think that the Feminism & Folklore campaign qualifies as such? I hope this makes sense! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:16, 8 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Just informing you edit

Hello Eric! I am a participant in the WikiGap Challenge 2022! I am accused of creating articles (bonus article, suggested by the UN Human Rights) in simple:Talk:Joia Perry. I was accused as a close person to the topic "Joia Perry". Idk what I should do! I created the article in different languages wikis. Then, i was again accused as a cross wiki spammer! The topic "Joia Perry" was even accused as a "red-flag case"! --Haoreima (talk) 08:55, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Haoreima! Thanks for letting me know. It seems like this IP number on the talk page is a completely new user, with few other edits than on this talk page. I don't know the local culture on Simple Wikipedia, or the notability criteria, but to me their accusations seem a little bit out of place. Perhaps you can reply that you have no connection to the person, and that the articles are based on the proposals from the UN Human Rights office? If more people join the conversation, I will ask around for support on how to deal with this kind of situations. Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 10:37, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Eric! Is the timing of submission/mentioning the contribution of the contestants in participants' page ended today? Or, can we still add our contributions' list tomorrow, though our contribution timing ended today? --Haoreima (talk) 03:43, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

WikiGap edit

Hello, Eric!

I'm an admin from SqWiki (Albanian) and for the sixth year now we are preparing to take part in the WikiGap activities with the collaboration of the local Swedish Embassies (Albania and Kosovo). We were trying to find some statistics in regard to the project's aim or contact different volunteers to exchange experiences about it throughout these years to use in our presentations but we weren't able to do so. From my past experiences, I'm generally used to seeing wikiproject pages which have ongoing discussions about the work that is being done, tables with articles which change frequently, statistics, and different resources such as references, infobox templates, images, etc. The page WikiGap, albeit more well-structured that most typical wikiproject pages, appears rather void from such details. That maybe makes sense given that it is a Meta page so I tried looking at EnWiki and SeWiki but couldn't find anymore information that what was already provided here. Then I looked at the page histories here (where I found your username) and saw that the said pages haven't seen much changes since 2020. Has there been a sort of decline of interest in the project? That would be normal on itself as it would be a natural part of many wikiproject's life cycle. I was just curious because from our community's point of view, it appears rather vibrant because of the implied importance the collaboration with the embassy brings. (Most other activities don't include institutional collaborations for us.) So it would be interesting to know more from the other perspective. - Klein Muçi (talk) 13:28, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Klein Muçi! Thanks for reaching out. Very excited to hear that you are preparing for WikiGap activities with the local Swedish Embassies! I don't think that there has been a general decline, but perhaps we (from Wikimedia Sverige's side) have not been promoting the WikiGap pages actively enough. We have done quite a lot of communication via email (has this reached you?) as well as via a Facebook group for WikiGap organizers. There is also quite a lot of activity on the Dashboard campaigns for WikiGap.
Happy to send you links if you don't know of these places. Also happy to discuss with you and others if you would like to use the Meta page(s) more actively! Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 13:15, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the answer! Unfortunately I am not aware of such venues and I'd be glad to see the said links. Maybe my community already is (because personally I tend to look after the actual wikiwork itself, other people are dealing with the activity's logistics) but it would be nice to have some extra information myself as well. — Klein Muçi (talk) 19:31, 6 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter edit

This is our twenty-seventh newsletter, a sort of year-in-review for 2023.

Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,

As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.

Highlights of 2023:

Newsletters Galore
We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.
Growing Strong
The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.
Wikimania Talks
Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
Content Creation Magic
Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Wikipedia. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.
Campaigning hard
We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.

Acknowledging Challenges:

While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.

Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:

As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.

Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

  • We have submitted our 2023 annual report.
  • Upcoming meeting: on 9 February, we'll have a call about roles and responsibilities in the user group. This is an attempt to make more opportunities to engage more of the user groups members in its activities. If you want to help out in some way, but don't know how, this is a meeting for you to get help creating that opportunity. If you know how you would like to help, but don't know how to get started, this is also the meeting for you.
