Jan :) On behalf of WMF I would like to thank you for your cooperation during the last fundraiser and we look forward for more fruitful and successful fundraisers over the next years. Thanks again :)--Melamrawy (WMF) 12:29, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Translator, We need you!Edit
Dear Ainali,
You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.
Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.
If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.
Many Thanks

A barnstar for you!Edit
Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you and other translators. If you are interested, we made a report, which has some statistics about the translations.
And: I have one more request, and that is that you take this survey. You may have got an e-mail about it, and if you did, please ignore this. But if you didn't it would be great if you would take this survey too, so we can learn to improve the translation experience.
Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 13:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Berlin hackathon invitationEdit

Ainali (talk) 19:19, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

VisualEditor at sv.wikipedia.orgEdit
Hello Ainali,
I am the new person working for the WMF with the VisualEditor deployment. I have been assigned to find people at sv.wikipedia.org who can translate the information pages and who can tell the software developers about bugs and other problems that affect users at the Swedish Wikipedia. It looks like you are one of the main translators for VisualEditor pages. Is there any information you need or anything I can do to help?
Unfortunately, I don't understand Swedish, but I read the two comments on the feedback page using Google Translate. As you said, the second one has probably been fixed by now. The first one may be a new report, but VisualEditor isn't supposed to work on mobile phones. They are writing a new version for use on smartphones. I expect that more problems will be reported when VisualEditor becomes available at the Swedish Wikipedia (perhaps on 29 July 2013). I want to get these reports to the developers in Bugzilla or at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback, so that any new problems can be fixed. Can you help me with that, or help me find someone who can do that?
I really appreciate the work you've been doing. The Swedish Wikipedia looks very organized. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 05:20, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Umea EnergiEdit
Hi Jan, I was wondering, if you could help me find a few more sources for Umea Energi which I may use in the English article and the Hindi one [I plan to create]? ----Rsrikanth05 (talk) 19:35, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
- As much as I would like to help, it might not be appropriate for me as one of the ones arranging the competition to help one of the contestants specifically. For now, you will have to rely on your own information seeking skills :) --Ainali (talk) 19:44, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
- Oops. :D P.S: have you thought of a photography competition? Some of them don't have any photos. ----Rsrikanth05 (talk) 08:55, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Request from two of usEdit
Hi Jan, here is a small request from Roger and me. Is it possible to get a photograph of a bus shelter with the lights from Umea as described in the Umea Energi article today itself? I know it sounds like a strange and hasty request, but is it possible? ----Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:51, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitionsEdit
The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.
If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.
I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 21:58, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose: I support free sharing of knowledge and do not think this petition supports it. The energy in the movement would be better preserved if you would focus on more important things. --Ainali (talk) 23:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for letting me know -- I very much disagree with you, I feel this is a very important step in preserving our ability to effectively share free knowledge, it is why I put my time into it. I respect your position, and I hope my request was not too much of an intrusion. -Pete F (talk) 23:30, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

The Structured Data Bee, vol. 1, issue 1Edit
Greetings, thank you for signing up for the Structured Data newsletter and its first edition. With this newsletter, the Structured data team plans on keeping you informed of technical progress, events, and communications to talk about the project, and continued information on how you can participate. This newsletter will be sent approximately every two weeks, and future editions will be translatable prior to publication. If you're new to Wikidata and want more information about how it works in relation to Wikimedia Commons, you can read an introduction to Wikidata for Commons being drafted.
Tech and designEdit
- The software development for this process is still in the planning phases. The idea is to have some functional prototyping done for experimentation and feedback by the end of the year.
- The initial roadmap for development has been posted on Commons. The roadmap is a rough outline and is open to iterations as the team learns where and when to focus its energies.
- There is a page set up for design ideas about what structured data could potentially look like.
- There are forthcoming requests for comment about the particulars of technical architecture on mediawiki.org. Keep an eye on the commons:Commons:Structured data/Get involved page for notification of when the RfCs are posted.
Events and chatsEdit
- There was a week-long meeting between the Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team, the Wikidata team, and community members, held in Berlin, Germany, at the office of Wikimedia Deutchland on October 6-10. You can read an overview of the event in on this page on Commons. There are also plenty of pictures available on Wikimedia Commons.
- If you would like to read more detail about what was discussed, there are etherpads of notes taken for each day of the event.
- The next IRC office hour to discuss the structured data project will be held on November 20, from 19:30 to 20:30 UTC.
Getting involvedEdit
- You've signed up for the newsletter. That's a great first step!
- While working prototypes are being developed, there is a drive to make all files contain machine-readable data on Wikimedia projects.
- The information and sign-up page is located on Meta, at File metadata cleanup drive.
- The MrMetadata tool on labs that will identify files on your wiki(s) that need information templates added.
- A hub has been launched to facilitate communication and documentation for this work.
- There is a frequently-asked questions page that is finishing drafting and will need translated. Keep an eye out for when it is ready if you are interested in translating.
- There will be active organization of the Get involved page as community participation is further organized. There will be work groups, similar to specific Wikiprojects, dedicated to particular aspects of structured data like licensing presentation, design, API performance, and even helping out with this newsletter and other community communications.
There will be much more information and activities around the proposal to develop structured data on Wikimedia Commons. This project is a major undertaking and an important step as the chief provider, repository, and curator of media for Wikimedia projects.
Thank you for your participation in such an extensive project, let me know if you're interested in participating in this newsletter. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:43, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons updateEdit
Greetings,
After a delay in updates to the Structured data on Commons project, I wanted to catch you up with what has been going on over the past three months. In short: The project is on hold, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening.
The meeting in Berlin in October provided the engineering teams with a lot to start on. Unfortunately the Structured Data on Commons project was put on hold not too long after this meeting. Development of the actual Structured data system for Commons will not begin until more resources can be allocated to it.
The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Germany have been working to improve the Wikidata query process on the back-end. This is designed to be a production-grade replacement of WikidataQuery integrated with search. The full project is described at Mediawiki.org.This will benefit the structured data project greatly since developing a high-level search for Commons is a desired goal of this project.
The Wikidata development team is working on the arbitrary access feature. Currently it's only possible to access items that are connected to the current page. So for example on Vincent van Gogh you can access the statements on Q5582, but you can't access these statements on Category:Vincent van Gogh or Creator:Vincent van Gogh. With arbitrary access enabled on Commons we no longer have this limitation. This opens up the possibility to use Wikidata data on Creator, Institution, Authority control and other templates instead of duplicating the data (what we do now). This will greatly enhance the usefulness of Wikidata for Commons.
To use the full potential of arbitrary access the Commons community needs to reimplement several templates in LUA. In LUA it's possible to use the local fields and fallback to Wikidata if it's not locally available. Help with this conversion is greatly appreciated. The different tasks are tracked in phabricator, see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89594 .
Volunteers are continuing to add data about artworks to Wikidata. Sometimes an institution website is used and sometimes data is being transfered from Commons to Wikidata. Wikidata now has almost 35.000 items about paintings. This is done as part of the WikiProject sum of all paintings. This helps us to learn how to d:Wikidata:WikiProject Visual arts/Item structuremodel and refine metadata about artworks. Experience that will of course be very useful for Commons too.
Additionally, the metadata cleanup drive continues to produce results. The drive, which is intended to identify files missing {{information}} or the like structured data fields and to add such fields when absent, has reduced the number of files missing information by almost 100,000 on Commons. You can help by looking for files with similarly-formatted description pages, and listing them at Commons:Bots/Work requests so that a bot can add the {{information}} template on them.
At the Amsterdam Hackathon in November 2014, a couple of different models were developed about how artwork can be viewed on the web using structured data from Wikidata. You can browse two examples here and here. These examples can give you an idea of the kind of data that file pages have the potential to display on-wiki in the future.
The Structured Data project is a long-term one, and the volunteers and staff will continue working together to provide the structure and support in the back-end toward front-end development. There are still many things to do to help advance the project, and I hope to have more news for you in the near future. Contact me any time with questions, comments, concerns.

Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/QuestionsEdit
Hello there! Please, do assume good faith :) You have not posted your answers to some questions, like:
- Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions#What is the crisis?
- Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions#BoT Role in new ED appointment
- Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions#Openness of board proceedings
- Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions#Making the WMF a membership organisation
- Affiliate-selected Board seats/2016/Questions#Should there be an independent review / analysis of the recent crises?
The voting starts today, so it is better to have everything done as soon as possible. I do want to hear your opinion on the questions you have missed, and I am going to ask this from every candidate, as it is important to understand how a future Trustee (and technically any of us can be elected) treats this or that issue, to know his or her thoughts about it on a public page. And I think that I am not very unique in my desire to have more text to get to know people better :) Wikipedians tend to read people (literally speaking) --アンタナナ 02:15, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- P.S. I do not have intentions to make you answer the questions you do not want to answer, I just want to know your opinion before you are elected as a Trustee. Even if you think that some questions are out of scope or not relevant. Thank you :) --アンタナナ 02:15, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
Open Call for Individual Engagement GrantsEdit
Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.
- Submit a grant request or draft your proposal in IdeaLab
- Get help with your proposal in an upcoming Hangout session
- Learn from examples of completed Individual Engagement Grants

Affiliate-selected Board seatsEdit
Dear Ainali, I am chair of Wikimedia Ukraine Board and writing to you on behalf of Wikimedia Ukraine. Is it possible for you to find an hour to talk via Skype (hangouts) during the next few days? Preferably before May 6, as we have to vote before May 7. I have written a letter to you, please check your email.
I apologize for such a short notice, but I thought I would have an opportunity to meet all candidates during Wikimedia Conference 2016. And we were really busy with Wiki Loves Earth contest last week --Ilya (talk) 22:57, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Survey on content curation & review Inspire CampaignEdit
Thanks for your participation in IdeaLab during the Inspire Campaign focused on improving content curation & review processes from February to March 2016. I'm interested in hearing your feedback about your participation during campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.
Immediate results of the campaign can be found here. Please feel free to review them and let me know if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:31, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Participate in the Inspire Campaign and help address harassment!Edit
Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

What's new?
A decision has been made about how the Recent Changes filtering scheme will affect current ORES beta feature users. When this new filtering system rolls out as part of the beta, it will replace the current ORES display on the Recent Changes page. That means the automatic color coding, the red “r” symbol and the “hide probably good edits” filter will go away, to be replaced by the new, more nuanced set of filters and user-defined color coding. All other pages that have ORES features, like Watchlist and Related Changes, will remain as they are now for ORES beta users. We think those pages could also benefit from the new filtering system. But we'll wait to see how users react to the beta test—and make any necessary changes—before we start spreading the new UI around. That's the plan as it currently stands. As always, please let us know if you have any thoughts, in any language.

What's new?
Flow satisfaction survey’s results are available. The survey provides useful data on what users like and don't like about Flow. This information will be helpful in discussions recently begun as part of the editing team's Annual Plan process. As the editing team investigates its priorities for next fiscal year (which begins in July), many ideas for improvements have been suggested, including projects to research the future of wiki discussions and to fix Flow's shortcomings.

- Huggle users are asked to share their feedback concerning proposed improvements for Huggle.
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
- Flow notifications category in the Notification Preferences page will be changed from (in English) "Flow" to "Flow Discussion". Messages that have to be updated on TranslateWiki are echo-category-title-flow-discussion and echo-pref-tooltip-flow-discussion. [42]
- Mentions were not recognized when more than one section is added during the same edit or when an new section was added and a change (new message or deletion) was done in another section. This is now solved. [43]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
- Rich text mode is now the default in Flow replies. Some inconsistencies used to exist. Now the preference between visual mode and wikitext mode is updated when a content change is made in the selected editor, literally when it is typed in, not when it is saved or when the editor is switched. [44]
- We plan to change Flow's URLs to make them more human readable. Your feedback is still welcome, the conversation will be closed on February 28th.

Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
The fourth fiscal quarter began the first of this month, and Collaboration Team has begun work on our new quarterly goals. In the coming months, we'll be working to release the New Filters for Edit Review beta on all wikis and then to improve the beta as much as possible based on user feedback. On that score, we're planning a round of user interviews on the new tools in May to get detailed information about usability and usefulness. If you've tried the new features and have thoughts, please share them with us in any language.
Our other focus right now is to look at what changes will be needed to spread the new filtering interface to other review pages, especially Watchlist. We're also exploring how to incorporate the tools we didn't include in the new interface in this round, like the Tag Filters, time-frame selector and Namespace filter.
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- New Filters for Edit review are now available on Polish, Portuguese, Persian, Russian and Turkish Wikipedias as a Beta feature. French Wikipedia and Mediawikiwiki have the filters as a Beta feature too, but without the quality and intent filters. [51]
- Special:RecentChangesLinked now displays a message when no results are found for a given combination of filters. [52]
Problems
- Polish Wikipedia is experiencing an issue with predictions (quality and intent filters using ORES). The different predictions are in conflict. An edit can be considered as "good" and "bad" at the same time, and the filter levels are somewhat redundant. We have formulated a plan to address this and are working on a fix, which is deployed progressively on Polish Wikipedia. [53]
- The issue on Polish Wikipedia is shared by a few other wikis: Dutch, Czech and Hebrew, and Wikidata. The deployment for those wikis has been postponed to Tuesday, May 9. Wikis without this predictions problem have been deployed or will be deployed with no change on the schedule. [54]
- Interestingly, the "problem" with those wikis is that they perform better than we anticipated. Once the fix is in place, the tools will work with particular simplicity on these wikis.
Future changes
- English Wikipedia and all wikis without ORES prediction services will get the New Filters for Edit review on Monday, April 24. [55]
- All remaining wikis will get the New Filters for Edit review on Tuesday, May 9. [56]
- Wikidata edits will be added as a type of change on New Filters for Edit review. [57]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
- Notifications badges were overlapping other tabs on Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox 3.6, using MonoBook skin. This is now fixed. [58]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
- Flow is now available as a Beta feature on French Wikiversity. [59]
- All Flow documentation is now available on one page gathering all information, to help users to search for an information.
- Flow's AbuseFilter integration now allows blocking a particular user from participating on a talk page, or any topic within it. [60]

No mistake...Edit
No, it's not a mistake. I suddenly had the feeling that taking part in a contest could create a "conflict of interest" in case of sysop actions on articles or users (on it.wiki) who also take part. So I watch from outside :-) It's really a great contest, I love it! (and I discovered really interesting places in your country). Thank you :-) --Civvì (talk) 09:11, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
Book prizesEdit
Re [61], it might be worth adding a note to the line at UNESCO Challenge/Prizes to say that someone is watching the page and will award these when appropriate, otherwise people will try to be helpful by trying to mark claims themselves. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:29, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

What's new?
- “New Filters for Edit Review” beta released: As of May 9, the New Filters for Edit Review beta has been released to all wikis. The beta lets users review edits on Recent Changes using an easier and more powerful interface and many new tools, including user-defined highlighting and, on some wikis, predictive filters powered by ORES, a machine-learning program. You must opt in to the beta to try it out.
- More features coming soon: The New Filters are still very much in development. In addition to fixing bugs and making adjustments (here’s our current to-do list), we’re actively adding new features, many at users’ request. A few notable additions you can look for this month: A cool tool for saving filter settings; a “Watchlisted pages” filter; a “Flagged Revisions” filter (for some wikis only); a “Last revision” filter.
- Tell us your ideas—but don’t wait: The team is focused right now in making changes to the New Filters beta. But in a few months, we’ll be moving on to other projects. So now is the time to give the new tools a try and then tell us what you think. What works well? What could make things better for you?
- In the medium-term: By the end of summer, we plan to complete a suite of improvements that will, among other things: incorporate all the remaining Recent Changes tools into the new filtering interface; create new ways for reviewers to move back and forth through the filter queue; implement a “Reverted” filter; and, finally, bring the New Filters UI and tools to Watchlist.
- Have time for a talk? We're looking for people we can interview about their experiences with the new beta. If you’re a regular user of Recent Changes and have tried the new features—and if you can spare an hour to chat in English with our design researcher—please email dchen wikimedia.org with the subject line “user interview.” Let us know how to get in touch with you and what time zone (city, country...) you’re in.
- Wish you had ORES on your wiki? Some of the more interesting New Filters for Edit Review features are dependent on the machine-learning service ORES, which is available only on a small but growing list of wikis. For ORES to work on a wiki, volunteers from that wiki must train it by scoring some thousands of sample edits. Here’s a link that explains how the process works and how you can get it started on your wiki.
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- Many Recent Changes pages have on top a list of links. We plan to integrate those links in a collapsible menu. You are invited to comment the 3 proposals we have drafted on Phabricator.
- On wikis where Flagged Revisions are used, an edit highlighted as bad by ORES will not be highlighted anymore when the edit is reviewed by someone. [62]
- You can highlight pages that are in your Watchlist in Recent Changes. 3 different filters are available: in watchlist, not in watchlist, new changes in watchlist. [63]
- Wikidata, Dutch, Czech, Hebrew, Estonian and Finnish Wikipedia now have the new filters available as a Beta feature, and ORES is enabled by default on those wikis. [64]
- All wikis now have the Recent changes Filters as a Beta feature. [65]
- Users are invited to opt in to the Recent changes Filters beta when they visit the Recent Changes page. [66]
- On wikis that have ORES predictions enabled by default, it is now possible to choose how to display the predictions in watchlist and recent changes pages. [67]
Future changes
- It will be possible soon to save and retreive your favorite filters combinations. [68]
- We are working on adding filter groups for last revisions, edits from Wikidata and reverted edits. [69][70][71]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- When an article you have created is linked to a Wikidata item, you can receive a notification. Wikidata and all the Wikivoyages have it since May 9th, other wikis will follow. [72]
- Special:Notifications tabs is now set to "Unread" if there are any unread messages. [73]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- You can enable Flow as a Beta feature on your talk page on Arabic Wikipedia and Catalan Wikiquote. [74][75]
- When you send more than 50 mentions on one Flow post, you are now warned you have hit the limit. [76]

What's new?
Integrated Filters
- The team is moving full speed ahead on a follow-up project to the New Filters for Edit Review beta dubbed "Integrated Filters." The name refers to the fact that we are integrating the Recent Changes tools that currently remain in the old user interface (like Namespace and Tag filters), along with some tools and capabilities from Watchlist and elsewhere, into the new Recent Changes interface.
- You can get an overview of the Integrated Filters projects, and the general release strategy, on the description page of the project Phabricator board. Among the more interesting new capabilities:
- Category filters: We'll be adding the ability to filter by category. This is a little tricky, since wiki categories often work in a somewhat counter-intuitive way, with the broadest categories returning the fewest results—because categories like "Science" or "Art" tend to contain not articles but other categories. So we're exploring solutions where a category search will crawl at least a layer or two down the category treat to, hopefully, bring back more useful results. [77]
- User filters: We're adding the ability to filter by any username, similar to what's available already on the the User Contributions page. [78]
- Live update: Users will have the ability to look at a more or less continuous flow of changes. This is a much requested feature that we expect will open up new possibilities for Recent Changes, especially for patrollers who want to see vandalism or other changes as they happen. While the updates won't truly be "live," the page updates will be frequent, similar to the way real-time tools (like RTRC or LiveRC) works. [79]
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
Have time for a talk?
- We're looking for people we can interview about their experiences with the new beta. If you’re a regular user of Recent Changes and have tried the new features—and if you can spare an hour to chat in English with our design researcher—please email dchen wikimedia.org with the subject line “user interview.” Let us know how to get in touch with you and what time zone (city, country...) you’re in.
Recent changes
- It is now possible to save your favorite filters sets by using bookmarks. [80]
- This feature documentation can be translated.
- It is possible to filter only the last edits done on a page on the Recent Changes page. [81]
- ORES review tool has been deployed to French Wikipedia. This wiki can use predictions filters. To have the predictions filters on your wiki, you need to work on the labeling campaign for your wiki or request it. [82]
- There were some issues with loading highlighted results when the URL was copied and pasted. This is now fixed. [83]
- A "Watchlisted pages" filter group now lets reviewers use Recent Changes, and all its tools, to patrol changes to pages they've Watchlisted. If you have any feedback about how useful this is nor isn't—especially given that we plan to add the new filtering interface to the Watchlist page — let us know.
- There were issues with the tools still in the older filtering UI — like the Namespace filter and the number of results selectors. These have been fixed. [84]
Future changes
- Integration of new features on recent changes pages is planned. They will include menus to filter users, tagged edits, categories and namespaces. See the "What's new" section above for more information.
- Now that users can save filter settings, and declare any settings they want as the Recent Changes page default, we'll be reviewing the RC page Preferences with an eye to getting rid of as many as we can. For instance, if you want to hide minor edits or Category changes by default, you can now do that right on the RC page, instead of having to go to a separate page to manage defaults.
- On many Recent Changes Pages, the community has defined a large number of links that are displayed directly under the page name (example on Polish Wikipedia). Many of these links are unrelated or only peripherally related to Recent Changes, add informational complexity of the RC page. Research shows that they are used only rarely or never. We want to clarify RecentChanges page functionality, so we plan to put the links into a collapsible panel.
- Should the panel default to open or closed? That is, should the default state (which users can change with one click) show the links as hidden or displayed? Let us know what you think.
- The most used links are shortcuts to certain type of edits, (Mobile, Newcomers...). Users can already save their favorite filter settings to the Saved Settings menu, which should make some of the existing links redundant. We plan to provide default bookmarks for the most used filters combinations. [85]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
Future changes
- Wikimedia Deutschland have scheduled the notifications of Wikibase notifications to Wikimedia projects: all the Wikivoyages on May 3; all the Wikipedias except en, fr, de on May 30; all other projects on June 13 and Wikipedias en, fr, de on September 5. [86]
- It will be possible to restrict who can send you notifications. [87]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- Flow has been activated on all talk pages on Catalan Wikiquote. [88]
Future changes
- On the Beta feature page, the activation message has been review to emphase the fact that the unstructured wikitext page will be archived. [89]

Hi!Edit
Just wanna be sure. Did you send my book prize (UNESCO Challenge)?
Structured Data on Commons Newsletter, July 19, 2017Edit
Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons?Edit
The millions of files on Wikimedia Commons are described with a lot of information or (meta)data. With the project Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons, this data is structured more, and is made machine-readable. This will make it easier to view, search (also multilingually), edit, organize and re-use the files on Commons.
In early 2017, the Sloan Foundation funded this project (see documentation). Development takes place in 2017–2020. It involves staff from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) and many volunteers. To achieve this, Wikibase support is added to Wikimedia Commons. Wikibase is the technology that is also used for Wikidata.
Recent developments: groundworkEdit
- A new and crucial technical step (federation) now makes it possible to reference data from one Wikibase website in another. Because of this, it will be possible to use Wikidata's items and properties to describe media files on Commons.
- Another important piece of groundwork is under development: so-called Multi-Content Revisions. This feature allows structured data to be stored alongside wiki text, so that one wiki page can contain several types of content.
Team updatesEdit
- Amanda Bittaker was hired as Program Manager for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons. Amanda will take care of the overall management of the project.
- Sandra Fauconnier (known as Spinster in her volunteer capacity) is the new Community Liaison. She will support the collaboration between the communities (Commons, Wikidata, GLAM) and the product development teams at the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland.
- We have open positions for a UX designer and a Product Manager!
Talking with communities and alliesEdit
- Long-term feedback from GLAMs. Besides the Wikimedia community, many external cultural and knowledge institutions (GLAMs - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) are interested in Structured Data on Commons and are willing to provide feedback on the long-term plans for the project. Alex Stinson, GLAM strategist at the Wikimedia Foundation, is currently in contact with Europeana, DPLA, the Smithsonian and the National Archives of the United States. Alex is also looking for other GLAM institutions who might be able to advise on the long term. If you know of an institution or partner that may be appropriate for consultation, do get in touch with Alex.
- Jonathan Morgan, design researcher, is starting to work on two projects:
- Researching batch upload workflows by interviewing GLAM institutions
- Researching the enrichment, organization and improvement tasks on already uploaded media files by engaging with active Commons contributors. This research follows up on existing research by Wikimedia Deutschland on heavy Commons users.
What comes next?Edit
- The Structured Data on Commons team meets in the week after Wikimania to lay the groundwork for the next steps. This includes new backend development and design work, for better and more clear integration of the structured data in pages on Wikimedia Commons.
- The project's information pages on Wikimedia Commons will receive a long overdue update in the upcoming months. The team will also work on more and better communication channels. Feedback, wishes and tips are welcome at the project's general talk page.
Get involvedEdit
- Join us at Wikimania! We are present at the hackathon, and there will be a session on Saturday, August 12: Structured Commons: what changes are coming?
- Follow the Structured Data on Commons project on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/34/
- Subscribe to this newsletter to receive it on a talk page of your own choice.
- Do you want to help out translating messages about Structured Data on Commons from English to your own language? Sign up on the translators page.
- Stay tuned for requests for input, discussion and participation as soon as the info portal is refreshed (see above). These will also be announced via this newsletter.
Many greetings from SandraF (WMF) (talk), Community Liaison for this project! 13:55, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

What's new?
The team is currently working on three main goals, which we expect to complete this summer or in September:
- Graduate New Filters for Edit Review core features out of beta:
- The core New Filters features slated to become standard parts of Recent Changes are the ones that have been out in beta for a while and fully road-tested by the community.
- These include the new filtering interface, the machine-learning filter groups “User Intent Predictions” and “Quality Predictions,” the highlighting tools, the ability to save your filter settings for later use, and the new filter groups: “Watchlisted pages,” “Last revision” and "User registration and experience."
- There’s a list of “blocker” tasks we need to complete before these features are ready to graduate out of beta.
- We expect to release those features by default in September. A more precise message will be sent to communities. If you have questions about it, you can write a message on Mediawiki.org, in any language.
- Extend the New Filters to Watchlist: The Watchlists of very active editors can include thousands of pages. To help these busy folks keep up with their work, we’re adding the New Filters UX and tools to Watchlist. The Watchlist and Recent Changes pages are similar, but there is some work involved in adapting the tools to their new setting. That work should be ready some time in late summer or early fall. Stay tuned for an announcement!
- Continuing work on “Integrated Filters”:
- While the New Filters for Edit Review beta brought probably 70% of the old-style Recent Changes features into the new user interface, it left some behind—like the Tag and Namespace filters and the controls for the number of days searched and number of results presented. As the name is meant to suggest, “Integrated filters” integrates those old-style tools into the new UI.
- It also adds some new tools users have asked for, such as:
- “Live updates” which provides a near real-time automatic refresh of the Recent Changes page.
- Category filters, which enable users to search by category.
- User filters, which let you define searches that include or exclude edits by particular users.
- We will put the community-defined related links that cluster at the top of most Recent Changes pages into a collapsible panel, in order to clarify the Recent Changes page.
We should note that it’s not certain these last two additions will make the cut for inclusion this year. If you want a make the case for either one, we want to hear from you.

There are, however, stumbling blocks along the way, including them monopolization, relevance and knowledge aversity. In a world like this, an institution like Wikipedia is more important than ever."
- Please do sign up on this page! The meet-up is free and open to all. Travel expenses can be covered by Wikimedia Norge (get in touch with astrid@wikimedia.no).
- Wikigrants

This work will continue in 2018, and those who are interested in ollowing it can sign up for updates on the project here.
- This project is also the first one where we use Phabricator for project management. The project can be followed here.

Collaboration products newsletter: 2018-03Edit
Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Map improvements 2018, Notifications, Structured discussions and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
The Collaboration team has announced the start of a new project: In-Context Help and Onboarding. The idea is to improve retention of new wiki editors by giving them short tutorials and other training experiences related to, and triggered by, their current activities on the wikis (that’s the “in context” part). The project follows from the conclusions of the New Editor Experiences research. The work is in its very early stages, but we’d like to hear from people with ideas on the subject—particularly if you have experience supporting or training new contributors.
Map improvements 2018 [More information]
- Maps using Maplink and Mapframe functions now include an extra zoom level (level 19). This is part of the Kartographer Improvements, the number one request of the 2017 Community Wishlist survey. [168]
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
- Number of edit to show in recent changes information text was incorrect in Special:Preferences. It has been rephrased. [169]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- You can notify users in edit summaries. They will get a ping just as if they had been mentioned on a wiki page. That new feature has been documented. [170]
- Preferences panel on Special:Notifications was overlapping other elements. This has been fixed. [171]
Future changes
- An important work is under progress to allow thanks of log entry. This is done by the Community Tech team. [172]
Structured discussions [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- Structured Discussions extension has been uninstalled from wikis not using it. However, it is still possible for a community to request a trial of Structured discussions. [173]
Problems
- It was not possible to opt-in and opt-out Structured discussions on wikis using it as a Beta feature. It is now fixed. [174]
Future changes
- The visual editor and 2017 wikitext editor interface is going to change for consistency. The toolbar, dialogs and menus will appear slightly bigger; some icons will look different. Content or functionality will not change. That change will apply to Structured Discussions as well. [175]

Structured Data on Commons Newsletter - Summer 2018Edit
Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!
- Community updates
- Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
- Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.
- A workshop on what Wikidata properties Commons will need. This workshop will be open for the entire month of July 2018 at minimum.
- Join the community focus group!
- Do you want to help out translating messages about Structured Data on Commons from English to your own language? Sign up on the translators page.
- Contribute to the next newsletter.
- Discussions held
- In late February there was a discussion around how Commons generally sees data being modeled.
- The first discussion on copyright and licensing with Commons was held in March. This was a "high level" discussion, there will be a consultation later this summer about the deeper mapping of copyright and licensing in a structured way.
- In April there was an exercise for GLAM partners in metadata and ontology mapping.
- A discussion about the design for Multilingual Captions on the file page took place in May. You can still review the designs and leave feedback.
- There was an IRC office hour in June to discuss progress so far and future plans.
- Wikimania 2018
- Three sessions about Structured Commons are officially scheduled for Wikimania 2018 - Cape Town, South Africa - July 2018.
- Wikimedia Commons and GLAM needs around the world (Friday 20 July, 10:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons and knowledge equity (Friday 20 July, 14:00 local time)
- Design challenge workshop: How can multilingual structured metadata bring knowledge equity to Commons? (Friday 20 July, 14:30 local time)
- Structured Data on Commons is also a focus area during the Wikimania 2018 Hackathon. We will, among other things, do 'live' modelling of Wikidata properties for Commons - an offline spin-off of the community consultation taking place on wiki.
- Partners and allies
- We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
- Structured Data on Commons was presented to GLAM audiences during EuropeanaTech 2018 in Rotterdam (15 May 2018) and at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Forum in Berlin (4 June 2018).
- Research
Two research projects about Wikimedia Commons are currently ongoing, or in the process of being finished:
- Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
- Prototypes will be available for Depicts soon.
- Stay up to date!
- Follow the Structured Data on Commons project on Phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/34/
- Subscribe to this newsletter to receive it on a talk page of your own choice.
- Join the next IRC office hour and ask questions to the team! The date for next quarter will be announced soon.

Structured Data Newsletter - Research link fixEdit
Greetings,
The newsletter omitted two interwiki prefixes, breaking the links on non-meta wikis as you might see above. Here are the correct links:
- m:Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
- m:Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.
My apologies, I hope you find the corrected links helpful.

Captions in JanuaryEdit
Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)Edit
My apologies if this is a duplicate message for you, it is being sent to multiple lists which you may be signed up for.
Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...
Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 January or Thursday, 10 January 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:
- Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
- Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
- Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.
Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.
Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:09, 7 January 2019 (UTC)The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your supportEdit
Hello. You are receiving this message because you kindly helped with affiliates-related translations in the past. The movement needs you again! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.
A Translation Central is available to help keen translators like you figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome. While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :)
Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:19, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Nyhetsbrev frå Wikimedia NoregEdit
Hello, Wikimedia Norge members and other contributors, here is our newsletter for August 2019.
- Wikimania 2019 in Stockholm
- This week, volunteers, employees and board members of Wikimedia Norge will be participating in the international Wikimania conference, which will be held in Stockholm this year. We will participate with a series of presentations, and one of the keynote speakers, Liv Inger Somby, is invited by Wikimedia Norge. You can read more about her in this blog post (also in Northern Sami).
- Wiki Loves Monuments
- This year the international photo contest Wiki Loves Monuments will be organized in Norway for the ninth time. What's new this year is that there will be an extra category for photos of Sámi monuments. The criteria for the contest are simple – the photos need to be of registered monuments in Norway, and must be uploaded during September 2019, but can be taken whenever. In September the monthly writing contest will also be about monuments in Norway.
- Hålogalandsvegen
- During the Márkomeannu festival in July, Wikimedia Norge and Várdobáiki Sámi Centre started the wikiproject Hålogalandsvegen. The wikiproject focuses on improving articles related to the new road Hålogalandsvegen and nearby places in Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk and Northern Sami. The project page and the lists of relevant articles will be updated during fall. Feel free to sign up if you are interested in contributing!
- Researchers' Days 2019
- Wikimedia Norge will again take part in the Researchers' Days (Forskningsdagene) organized by the Research Council of Norway. On September 24th at 17:30 we will hold a seminar on Decolonizing knowledge online at Kulturhuset in Oslo. Welcome!
Keep the dates! October 11th is #wikinobel, and November 27th there will be a meetup at Litteraturhuset. Mer information on these events will come on a later date.

Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia SpaceEdit
There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:
- Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
- Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.
Nyhetsbrev fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Hello, Wikimedia Norge members and other contributors, here is our newsletter for November 2019.
During one week of October, Giellavahkku, the UN International Year of Indigenous Languages was celebrated all over the country. Wikimedia Norge was recently granted money from the Sámi Parliament's language funds to create an education program in cooperation with the Sámi University of Appliec Sciences and the University of Tromsø for students to contribute to the Wikipedia in Northern Sámi, or to contribute Sámi content to other Wikimedia projects in general. We have also been granted money from Fritt Ord to put Sámi place names in Wikidata, in cooperation with the Norwegian Mapping Authority. You can read more about this work on our blog.
The jury has finished its task for this year's Wiki Loves Monuments, and the 10 winning photos that go on to the international part of the contest have been announced on the winners page on Commons. Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks a lot to all contestants and jurors!
Here's an overview of Wikimedia Norge events happening in the next few months:
- Bodil Biørn and women's invisibility in history
- On the 11th of November, Wikimedia Norge and the National Archives of Norway invites you to an event at the National Archive from 17:00 till 19:00. History has often been written by and for men. This is reflected in archives, history books, and on Wikipedia. Why is it important to make source material showing women's perspective on history available? The event is free and open to all. Welcome!
- Meet-up at Litteraturhuset
- On the 28th of November, Wikimedia Norge invites you to a meet-up at Litteraturhuset in Oslo from 18:00 till 19:00. Ruth Vatvedt Fjell will be presenting.
- Fjell, who is quite interested in curse words, is a professor of lexicography and cares about how language can maintain unbalanced gender patterns. Wikipedia is a huge knowledge base where anyone can contribute. Therefore it's right to ask what the type of language we use means for how knowledge is disseminated?

Dear Jan, Hello from California, 9 hours behind Amsterdam. Kindly request to schedule a time slot when you would have 10 minutes for a presentation. Re: Standardized Impact Template based on SDGs Thank you Jan. Best, Joseph ceo buysycle http://www.buysycle.com/
- Hello Joseph Hentz! Can you do today at 19.00 UTC? If so, send me a wikimail and we can sort out how to connect. Ainali (talk) 06:37, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

AI legislationEdit
Dear Ainali,
I contact you since you are marked among the "People who are interested" in Advanced technology page. As you might already know, the EU is working about a regulation of the AI environment, in order to promote its potential and at the same time to protect the citizens from unwanted uses. It is going to be an important moment for achieving the most empowering, safe and clear definition of the rights and duties related to the AI, affecting also Wikimedia's opportunities, not only inside EU. I kindly invite you to participate to the discussion, firstly by commenting the page that is dedicated to it, in order to draft Wikimedia's answers to this legislative initiative of the EU.
The linked page contains the questions from the public consultation by the European Commission on its Artificial Intelligence White Paper.
The EU's survey will remain open until 14 June 2020, but we will take input into account until 31 May 2020.
Mall:Samma somEdit
HI! I just saw your presentation on Wikispore Day about wikisource:sv:Mall:Samma som, and it looks cool! I was just wondering if it'd qualify for a sitelink to Template:Wikidata link (Q17484365)? I've been experimenting with a similar template on English Wikisource, wikisource:Template:wdl, and I have a vague memory that Italian Wikisource does something similar, and takes it another step by using it to categorize pages according to what other concepts they link to. —Sam Wilson 06:29, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! It looks similar, but also with a bit of a different purpose and implementation. I am not sure if it is better to link them now and then change them when more identical templates are created or keep them separate in order to not make people think there already are identical templates on the other wikis. ♥Ainali talkcontributions 10:02, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
Invitation to affiliate members to complete a survey about WMF wide Universal Code of ConductEdit
Hello; My name is Mervat, and I am helping the Trust and Safety team to reach out to affiliates in order to discuss the Universal Code of Conduct. I am contacting you as you are a member of the Wikimedians for Sustainable Development User Group. If you have received this from other user groups/chapters, you can ignore.
There has been talks about the need for a global set of conduct rules in different communities over time, and finally, Wikimedia Foundation Board announced a Community Culture Statement, enacting new standards to address harassment and promote inclusivity across projects.Since the universal code of conduct that will be a binding minimum set of standards across all Wikimedia projects, will apply to all of us, staff and volunteers alike, all around the globe, and will impact our work as groups, individuals and projects, it’s of great importance that we all participate in expressing our opinions and thoughts about UCoC, its nature, what we think it should cover or include and what it shouldn’t include; how it may develop, drawback or help our groups. This is the time to talk about it. As you are a valuable contributor to the Wikimedia movement, your voice counts. Before starting to draft the code of conduct, we would like to hear from you; We invite you to devote some minutes to take this survey; your answers will help us create a safer environment for all on Wikimedia:
It’s possible that you are a member of more than one affiliate; hence you may receive this survey more than once, and you may have participated previously in the discussions or filled out a previous survey during the first round of consultations about UCoC which targeted wikipedia/wikimedia communities. We apologize for this; it is really difficult to identify if a wikimedian belongs to multiple groups that work to spread free knowledge. Looking forward to your thoughts and opinions and hoping that you can respond within the next 2 weeks. If you have any questions about the surveys or difficulties accessing the link, please contact me by email (msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org)Results will be considered during the drafting process for the UCoCThank you for your participation

MassMessage timestampEdit
Hi, I'm reaching out to you because you've used Special:MassMessage here in the last couple of months. In phab:T270435 there's a discussion about how to be able to use MassMessage when using the new "Page to be sent as a message" function, which would require an easier way of adding a timestamp. My suggestion is to add it automatically, since MassMassages are going out to discussion pages of different kinds, and should be timestamped. If you have a workflow where you don't want your message to be timestamped, please let me now on my talk page or in the Phabricator ticket. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 14:15, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Nyhetsbrev nr. 19 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Happy new year, and congratulations with 20 years of knowledge dugnad!
The English Wikipedia was launched on the 15th of January, 2001. The theme of the 20-year celebration is celebrating the people behind Wikipedia – all of you who have contributed in some way to make us able to celebrate 20 years of free knowledge. Due to the pandemic, we can't celebrate in-person at the moment, but we hope to be able to organize a celebration within the year.
- Submit a greeting
- We have made a congratulatory page where anyone can send their regards to Wikipedia. We hope it will be a nice page that shows why Wikipedia is as important as ever. Submit your greeting now!
- Wiki meet-up
- The next wiki meet-up will be on January 27th. Karl Wettin from Wikimedia Sverige will participate, giving a presentation of Wikispeech… This is an exciting open-source project about crowdsourced voice synthesis. It also has applications well beyond the Wikimedia projects. Any suggestions for future meet-up topics are very welcome at the bottom of the meet-up page!
- Events to look forward to in 2021
- Wikimedia Norge's general assembly will be held on the 6th of March. It will be held entirely online this year, just like last year. More information coming soon.
- We are planning a digital administrator meet-up for all administrators in the Wikipedias in Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk, probably in March. If you are interested in helping organize this, please contact Jon Harald.
- Arctic Art+Feminism: We will organize four editathons during 2021, where the theme is female artists and indigenous art. More information coming soon.
- WikiGap: If the pandemic allows, there will be a WikiGap event at the Swedish Embassy in Oslo. We hope to see you there! This year's theme is female activists from South America.
- Arctic Knot: In June, we will organize the Wikimedia language conference, Arctic Knot. This is a continuation of the Celtic Knot series of conferences. More information coming soon!
- New membership system
- We are implementing a new membership system. What does this mean for you? Hopefully, as little as possible. For us, however, it means better follow-up of our members. Next week, we will send out a newsletter containing information about membership fees for 2021, among other things. They can be paid via Vipps or via AvtaleGiro. If you have already paid your dues for 2021, you can discard this.
- Survey from the Wikimedia Foundation
- The Wikimedia Foundation is asking for answers to this survey from Wikimedians around the world. The WMF has made a Norwegian translation of the survey. You can answer it anonymously without sharing an email address, but if you do, you shouldn't close the browser before you have completed the survey.
Have you already paid your membership fees for 2021? If not, you can always do so by re-registering on this page.

Nyhetsbrev nr. 20 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- General assembly
- This year's general assembly was held on March 6th, and the minutes are available here. Amongst other things, it was decided to give Wikimedia Norge an official name in Southern Sámi, Lule Sámi and Kven. That means that we now have 6 official names: Wikimedia Norge (Norwegian Bokmål), Wikimedia Noreg (Norwegian Nynorsk), Wikimedia Norga (Northern Sámi), Wikimedia Vuodna (Lule Sámi), Wikimedia Nöörje (Southern Sámi) and Wikimedia Norja (Kven).
- New board
- Hogne Neteland exited the board after many years of service, we would like to thank him for his efforts! Sigrun Espe continues as board chair. The board has two new board members:
- Fredrik Ljone, Bergen. Board member, elected for the 2021–2023 term. Ljone is dedicated to sharing knowledge, open data and rule of law. He has taken the initiative to make the law more accessible for everyone through jusleksikon.no and rettspraksis.no.
- Stian Amadeus Antonsen, Oslo. Deputy board member, elected for the 2021–2022 term. Antonsen has a lot of experience from different civil society organizations, and works as a political advisor in the Norwegian Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund (SAIH). He is dedicated to diversity and inclusion, and wants everyone to be able to share in the production and dissemination of knowledge.
- Welcome to them both!
- Arctic Knot
- On June 24–25, Wikimedia Norge will organize the digital Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference.
- Wikipedia is a cornerstone of the digital age, but the knowledge you'll find isn't evenly distributed across languages. The Wikimedia movement is about to implement its 2030 strategy, while UNESCO is working on the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL), which starts in 2022. IDIL shows the potential that technology has in supporting and maintaining indigenous languages. These milestones form a frame for the conference, where we will discuss linguistic diversity in the Wikimedia projects, and how to build good linguistic environments for the users of indigenous and underrepresented language communities.
- Arctic Knot is a conference for all Wikipedians and Wikimedians who are interested in indigenous languages, and also for organizations and institutions working in this field. This year's special focus will be on the Sámi languages. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Jon Harald Søby at jhsoby@wikimedia.no.
- Administrator meetup
- On Saturday, March 20, we held a administrator meetup for the Norwegian-language Wikimedia projects. There were 10 participants, of which one is a Wiktionary administrator, and the rest are administrators on the Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia. The meetup was initiated by Wikimedia Norge on request from the community.
- During the meetup there was a walkthrough of "hidden" or little-known administrator tools, like mass deletion, new blocking options and patrolling tools. There was also broad agreement that there is a need to update and centralize rules and guidelines on-wiki.
- Wikimedia Enterprise
- With its new project Wikimedia Enterprise, the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a way to cooperate with commercial actors like Google and Amazon. A lot of commercial actors are already using Wikimedia content, but without any formal agreements or financial compensation. Wikimedia Enterprise is meant to be a service that will improve the user experience of Wikimedia outside of the Wikimedia platforms, and also be financially self-sustaining.
- According to an article in Wired, the Wikimedia Foundation wants to make the effort of the volunteers more visible, and stimulate the tech giants to help contribute to the volunteer community.
- Wikipedia 20 years
- The Norwegian minister of education, Guri Melby, has sent a video message to all Wikipedians in connection with the 20th anniversary! Go have a look! Remember that you too can send a message!

Nyhetsbrev nr. 21 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Hello, here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- Arctic Knot
- On June 24–25, the Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference is finally under way! The conference is fully digital, and we hope you'll find the program interesting! There will be exciting talks and panel debates, and an opportunity to get to know projects like Abstract Wikipedia and Wikisource.
- The full program is now available on Meta-Wiki, and you can read more about the conference on our blog.
- Registration for the conference has opened, and participation is free of charge.
- You can register all the way up until the conference starts, but if you wish to participate in the Unlocking the potential of digital language archives session, you need to register by June 20th in order to be able to use the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) as the session is happening.
- The program is varied and exciting, and we think everyone will find something interesting in the program.
- Du you wish to contribute to the conference as a volunteer? All participation is very welcome!
- Maybe you'd like to help test the platform we'll be using beforehand? Or do you have any questions you think should be raised during the panel debate? Maybe you'd like to contribute with entertainment of some sort? Get in touch on arcticknot@wikimedia.no!
- The monthly contest on Wikipedia
- The subject of June's monthly contest will be artists. Edits to all articles on artists will yield points, but we hope many would like to write about Sámi and other indigenous artists!
- Wikimania
- This year's Wikimania will also be fully digital, enabling even more people to participate. The theme will be 20 years of Wikipedia, so it is a time to celebrate what the Wikimedia movement has achieved, and look back on the journey that led us here. You can now propose sessions for Wikimania. If you have an idea for a session, but are not sure about how to angle it, feel free to get in touch with us. We can help with brainstorming and whatever else you need!
- Wiki meet-ups
- It's not long before we can hold in-person meet-ups again, and some plans are already under way. It would be great for more people to be able to join meet-ups. Wikimedia Norge can help financially if you wish to organize a meet-up where you live.
- We will still be organizing meet-ups, workshops and admin meet-ups at (ir)regular intervals, either digitally or in-person. If you have any ideas for topics, feel free to get in touch with Jon Harald (jhsoby@wikimedia.no)!

Thank you for your support!Edit
Hello, Ainali: We wanted to THANK YOU for expressing your support in our grant application to develop Web2Cit: Visual Editor for Citoid Web Translators and for volunteering to take part in the project. We have great news to share: our proposal has been approved! In the following weeks, we will be processing some paperwork and refining our next steps for this project. We aim to give updates so you can follow the development of the project and you can understand when and how you can contribute! But for now, we wanted to thank you and invite you to celebrate with us! Both Diegodlh and myself are very thankful for your support. --Scann (talk) 12:40, 2 June 2021 (UTC) |

A big thank you for organizing #WikiForHumanRights! And please give us feedback!Edit
Both UN Human Rights and the WMF team are really grateful. Initial data suggests that this year we doubled the volume of content created and grew the campaign in languages and geographies. This kind of activation only works when we have local-organizers doing targeted outreach to their communities.
We are still learning how to organize this campaign, would like your feedback. Please fill out this survey at: this google form.
We will use the summary of findings and recommendations from the survey for the report on the campaign and for designing next year’s campaign. Our hope is to support more decentralized events, potentially with less experienced organizers -- so we need your help understanding what worked, what didn’t and what kinds of preparation we need to help communities with next year.
Please note that the collected information in this survey will be treated as in WikiForHumanRights Organizer Feedback Privacy Statement.--MBakni (WMF) (talk) 19:15, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Eventbrite and Wikimania, form questions: privacy implicationsEdit
Dear Ainali,
I have just seen your lonely comment in Talk:Wikimania 2021 Registration Form Privacy Statement while trying to register for Wikimania 2021 from my home wiki using a throwaway email account. Despite contributing to WP projects for +10 years, it will be my first Wikimania, so maybe I am commenting on the obvious and beating the dead horse, but I could not find any such comments in the 2020 and 2019 editions either.
I am wondering about it myself, also given the strange questions on the registration form and the use of the Eventbrite platform (which I also commented on in the registration form itself) and I would have asked the same question as you had. I was going to elaborate on it as per below, but I cannot query the organizers' motives there, as I do not have an account in Wikimedia Foundation platform, so I am addressing you here instead for a while, in case you know the meta background and their minds better.
- The form is asking about our sexual preferences and age bracket inter alia, and not about e.g. problems with vision, hearing, technical means and access (or occasional lack thereof, see the valuable relevant initiatives of local wikis)
- The form is asking us about our WP account name (not required but still)
- The form is hosted on and the data processed by Eventbrite (huh?)
- The resulting email I have received does not give me the working link yet, only "1 eTicket, The organizer will follow up with instructions on how to redeem your ticket and access the event." so I will likely need to repeat it using another throwaway account.
Myself I have been joejobed, trolled etc. on two WP wikis at least and my colleagues receive daily death threats (!) from wikicrazies, so I have always been wary of further doxxing.
Update: oh, they also "license" these replies and then give a "cool tool privacy award".
I will self-consciously wax conspiratorial here: white is black, war is peace, (our individual) ignorance is (somebody's organisational) strength.... Zezen (talk) 12:58, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
Nyhetsbrev nr. 22 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Hello, here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- Arctic Knot – a big success
- The final thing we did before the summer holidays was to hold the Arctic Knot Conference. We spent most of 2021 preparing the conference, and the conference lasted for two days with a lot of participation. Most of the videos from the conference are available in this playlist on YouTube.
- 13–17 August
- Wikimania
- Wikimania starts tomorrow, and the deadline for registering is midnight UTC tonight. Wikimania lasts for 5 days, and the program is adapted to multiple timezones, so it will take place at various parts of the day. There are plenty of interesting submissions!
- Wikimedia Norge is participating with a workshop. The workshop's goal is to further develop the idea of a Wikimedia hub for underrepresented language communities. Everyone is welcome to participate!
- Next wiki meet-up
- 25 August
- The first meet-up of the fall will be about Abstract Wikipedia. We will watch Denny Vrandečić's presentation from Arctic Knot together, and discuss afterwards. The meet-up will take place on Google Meet, and start at 17.00 CEST. Simply explained, Abstract Wikipedia is about writing articles as functions in order to make them language-independent.
- International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
- 9 August marks the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, and we wrote a blog post based on some of the presentations from the Arctic Knot Conference.
- Wikipedia 20 years
- Due to Wikipedia's 20 year anniversary, we have received video greetings from government ministers and the President of the Sámi Parliament. You can watch the videos here. The greetings are for everyone who has contributed to Wikipedia during its 20 years of existence – thank you very much for your efforts!
- Wikipedia in Norwegian turns 20 in November. This will be celebrated at the November meet-up; further information will come later.

Interview RequestEdit
Hi Ainali!
My name is Seve, and I am a Product Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation. I am reaching out to GLAM users as part of an upcoming research study I am conducting.
We wish to learn more about how editors discover and use tools and hopefully come up with related products or services that meet your needs and the needs of people like you. I would like to request an hour to interview you for whatever time works best for you. Let me emphasize that I don't wish or intend to interfere with your day or waste your time.
If you want to learn more details about participating in this study, I'd be happy to give you a call and explain more.
Thank you, Seve

Nyhetsbrev nr. 23 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Hello, here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- Wikipedia in Norwegian Bokmål is turning 20!
- The Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia turns 20 on November 26, and this will be celebrated during the December 1 wiki meet-up. That will be a virtual meet-up with a quiz and other fun. Do you wish to receive a 20th anniversary T-shirt? Send us your address and size (S–XL) to wikimedia@wikimedia.no!
- Here's more information about the meet-up.
- Giellavahkku and Sámi work
- Maybe you've been wondering why there's been so much Sámi stuff in social media lately? The reason is the Sámi language week, Giellavahkku, which aims to make the Sámi languages more visible. The Sámi languages, culture and history are an important part of the diversity of knowledge. We have summarized the work we're doing with regards to Sámi languages in this blog post.
- The Lapp Codicil was repatriated to the Sámi Archives this month, after a long process. The Lapp Codicil is still the base of the laws for borders in the North of Scandinavia. It will soon also be available on Wikimedia Commons.
- Queer culture year 2022
- Througout 2022, the queer culture year (Skeivt kulturår) will be marked in Norway. In preparation for this, we have uploaded 139 interviews by the Queer Archive to Wikimedia Commons. We also have several other projects planned for next year.
- – The fact that queer experiences, history and culture aren't reflected online is a blank spot in our common history, says Heide Rohde Rafto, acting academic director of the Queer Archive of Norway. She adds that queer history is not only the history of LGBT+ people, but of the whole of society.
- By engaging in the queer cultural year, we are hoping to fill in these blank spots. And we're doing this from a diversity point of view – it's not all about gender and sexuality, but also about individuality and the people who have made an effort to effect change.
- Language Diversity Hub
- Diversity of knowledge shouldn't just be limited to Norway. Through international cooperations, we are hoping to create a gathering point for those who are working on indigenous and underrepresented languages. In this project we are joined by several participants of the Arctic Knot Conference this summer. You can read more about this work on this page.
- Retriever
- It will soon be time to disperse access tokens for Retriever again. You can sign up from November 15. Reminders will be posted on Torget and Samfunnshuset when the sign-up opens.
- Wikimedia Sverige have a separate deal with the Swedish Retriever. They have many access tokens available, and can share them with Norwegian volunteers as well. Only Swedish media is available through their deal. Sign up on this list on the Swedish Wikipedia if you're interested in getting access to the Swedish Retriever.
- Wikigrants
- Now that society has reopened, there are more opportunities to go out and about! There are several activities you can apply for a wikigrant for. All Wikimedia contributors can apply for a grant of up to 8,000 NOK. The grant must be used for activities that support one or more Wikimedia projects, and the application deadline is November 20.

IFTTT IntegrationEdit
Hi Ainali!
I have been investigating the issue with the IFTTT integration that @SLaporte (WMF) had originally created. We do not have the capacity to continue to maintain this service but we've identified the work required to fix the broken integration. The code itself is on Github and hosted on toolforge. Stephen said you might be someone who uses the Wikipedia IFTTT and thought I reach out to see if you're interested in adopting?
Please let me know your thoughts, SKim (WMF) (talk) 16:06, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Nyhetsbrev nr. 24 fra Wikimedia NorgeEdit
Hello, here are the latest news from Wikimedia Norge!
- English Wikipedia most visited
- Statistics for pageviews to encyclopedias in Norway in 2021 were recently shared on Torget. Not surprisingly, Wikipedia is the most-visited encyclopedia; the English-language edition is slightly ahead of the Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk editions (combined), with 348 and 325 million pageviews, respectively. In comparison, the next encyclopedia on the list, Store norske leksikon, had 112 million pageviews. The numbers speak for themselves: Wikipedia is where people go to learn.
- It is also a reminder that Wikipedians' efforts are incredibly important. We hope these numbers can help motivate both new and experienced contributors.
- Thanks to H@r@ld for sharing this information.
- Bot workshop
- On Sunday 27 February from 12:00–16:00, we will hold a bot workshop! We will go through how to set up and run the most common bot framework, Pywikibot, on PAWS, and show some of the most common standard scripts in Pywikibot.
- Maximum 10 participants! Sign up on the meet-up page or via e-mail to jhsoby@wikimedia.no.
- Year of Queer Culture
- panel debate in Bergen
- On Thursday 24 March, Wikimedia Norge and the National Archive for Queer History will hold a panel debate at Litteraturhuset, Bergen. The theme for the debate is how archives, museums and Wikipedia can make queer history, art and culture more visible. IT will also examine how we use contemporary labels for the past. A common understanding of what queer history is will help us to make queer history more visible.
- The event is part of the Year of Queer Culture 2022.
- Wiki meet-up and general assembly in Bergen
- Wikimedia Norge will host a wiki meet-up with pizza and something to drink at Villa Paradiso Ole Bull on 25 March, starting 18:30. Register on the wiki meet-up page or by e-mail to wikimedia@wikimedia.no.
- The next day, on 26 March from 12–14, we will hold our general assembly, taking place at Litteraturhuset, Bergenː All members are welcome! The general assembly will also be streamed for those who can't be there in person, and voting will happen digitally.
- Active contributors can get a travel stipend. Send an e-mail to astrid@wikimedia.no in order to apply.
- Remember membership fees before the general assembly!
- You can finally use Vipps to set up a regular, annual payment of your membership. We have updated our website and hope even more people will use a recurring payment. If you wish to use AvtaleGiro, that is also still possible.
- Remember that you must have paid your membership fee for 2022 in order to vote at the general assembly.
