Invitation to share your ideas on Wikimedia’s Innovation Idea Wall edit

Dear @Valerio Bozzolan:

Thank you for being part of our, the Innovation team at Wikimedia Deutschland's, journey in developing a new innovation format for the Movement this far (you can read more about it here:Re-imagining_UNLOCK). As we are moving along with our process, we would love to hear your ideas on how to address the challenges that you have helped us identify – challenges that are keeping us from fostering innovation in our communities.

To facilitate collaborative ideation, we have created an Innovation Idea Wall—a virtual space where you can freely scribble down your ideas whenever you find a moment of inspiration. We believe that by putting together the collective wisdom and creativity of Wikimedians like yourself, we can unlock new possibilities for innovation in our Movement.

To access the Innovation Idea Wall, simply follow this link [1]. You will be directed to our concept board, an online whiteboard, where you will find the instructions on how to get started. We assure you that the process is easy to follow along. In brief, we have formulated some questions that we invite you to brainstorm on – any idea is welcome! Your opinions matter greatly to us, as we firmly believe that Wikimedians possess the firsthand knowledge and expertise needed to identify the necessary improvements in our approach to innovation.

We look forward to watching this Idea Wall grow over the coming weeks. The idea wall will be accessible until July 3rd.

@Sissela Björk (WMDE): You are very kind, I just want to report that I tried to use that tool but it seems to be too much for my laptop. There is something strange when I move, and it keeps duplicating post-its doing a mess. I tried undoing my changes. Probably better if I do not use that ihih ValerioBozz (talk) 08:58, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Grazie ancora e a presto,

The "less embellishment" proposal. edit

Hello Valerio,

Thanks for your reply to my proposal for "less embellishment".

Since the original submission I've spent several hours over several mornings reading replies, thinking and composing counter-replies. Have tried to state forcefully without being too offensive. Of course any disagreement can be offensive but style of writing makes the difference between debate and insult.

A particular incident was my original motivation. For years I've edited sources. I spent many hours learning to use markup for tables of contents, tables, color backgrounds & etc. Many details are critical to the Oberon book. Overriding some of the automation was necessary but difficult. Eventually I became sufficiently skilled with source editing. =8~) One day there was a new edit link at the top of the page. There was now [edit] and [edit source]. Inadvertently clicking on [edit] produced a progress bar and delay while visual editing loaded. =8~| My thinking was, "Why do I need this? Source editing works well. A new facility is cluttering the page and slowing my work." I understand that source editing is difficult for many. Visual editing might be justified. Nevertheless there should be a way to provide it without more clutter on the page. Pages already have enough (or more than enough) information additional to the primary content. Mobile page style is my preference, even on a desktop machine; "simple as possible".

In my view, unnecessary embellishment is a serious threat to Wikimedia projects. There are two sources of embellishment. A volunteer can apply skills to create a new feature while not evaluating carefully how it is implemented. Sometimes there is a simple way and a complex way. "Simpler is better." =8~)

Secondly is work by a paid programmer. Conflict of interest is a risk. Of course I don't condemn paid programmers but objectives must be evaluated carefully and honestly to avoid unjustified work. With the current strong financial position of the Foundation unjustified work is a particular risk.

At present my imagination is producing no good ideas for better expression of the concern. You have said you are on my side. Good. =8~) Can you write a paragraph improving my statements? Perfection is not necessary. Just something to spur my imagination in the right direction. Progress is possible. =8~)

Thanks! ... PeterEasthope (talk) 17:16, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think that part of the incident here is that I'm not native English so I have totally no idea about what embellishment may mean, really. Also after I've read the examples also, maybe because I use a different interface or a different theme or a different device and I do not understand what we are talking about. I think a good proposal is: «Go to URL https://foo with your browser-web set to English language with Vector theme from unregistered from desktop, then look in the top right corner. Do you see that label "xxxx"? It's confusing because bla bla. I propose "foo bar" instead». Something like assuming that your readers have totally no idea about what we are talking about, as they were aliens (spoiler: they are! ahah) --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 20:14, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
From Google Translate: embellishment = abbellimento.
Your English is infinitely better than my Italian.
Ciao! ... P. PeterEasthope (talk) 04:19, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I understand that you're seeing something bad and you want to change it. That's awesome! Thank you so much for this. MediaWiki is not sexy by design. But I'm saying that most people were not able to guess what was ugly, where and what can be done. That's precisely what it's not obvious. Please share more context! Let others understand your point of view! Don't fight to win the prize "proposal with the least number of words" :D --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 08:42, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
> ... most people were not able to guess what was ugly ...
Niente è brutto ma c'è troppa complessità. Non c'è bisogno di indovinare i dettagli. Ho fornito tre esempi specifici. Le persone possono leggerli o meno. Scusa che non posso scrivere in più lingue.
> MediaWiki is not sexy by design.
MediaWiki è diventato troppo sexy! Ora c'è troppa attenzione sugli ornamenti.
Saluti, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 15:29, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Personal Invitation to the Open Innovation Café of Wikimedia Deutschland edit

Hello @Valerio Bozzolan:

This year we are setting out on a journey to build a new format for the Wikimedia Movement, a safe space that will foster innovation and allow members of our community to experiment with and build new ideas for Free Knowledge. This is why we would like to extend a personal invitation to you to join our Open Innovation Café where we want to tell you all about what we are planning and how we would love you to be involved!

We are reaching out to people, affiliate representatives and Wikimedia community members who specifically indicated in some capacity that they are either working on or interested in innovation in the Wikimedia Movement and/or recommendation no. 9 “Innovate in Free Knowledge” of the Movement Strategy 2030. We will be a diverse, international group. The Café will be done in English and will be hosted by us. There is no preparation required, simply drop in as you are.

When and where will the Open Innovation Café take place? We will be running two identical open cafés, so choose the slot and time zone that suits you best:

We look forward to seeing you at the Open Innovation Café and diving deeper into this exciting, pan-Movement endeavor!

--Kannika Thaimai (WMDE) (talk) and Lucia Obst (WMDE) (talk) 15:08, 2 March 2023 (CET). Feel free to reach out to us at unlock@wikimedia.de

@Kannika Thaimai (WMDE): Thank you for your initiative but for security and privacy reasons I cannot participate to any Zoom or Google Meet meeting. Thank you for what you can do to help me in adopting ethical tools such as BigBlueButton or Jitsi Meeting. This is a useful direction followed by OpenStreetMap Foundation, Wikimedia France and Wikimedia Italy. Details at BigBlueButton. --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 15:00, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Unblock my IP please (I'm attending the Wikimedia Hackaton) edit

Unblock request granted

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.

Request reason: I created the page Wikimedians for software freedom and contributed to FLOSS-Exchange days ago and now I just tried to edit these during the Wikimedia Hackathon but their Wi-Fi network is VERY slow and I do not trust it very much (like I do not trust any hotel Wi-Fi, etc.), so I'm proxying and compressing my packets from my Linux Virtual Private Server in OVH (I bought that years ago and I can attach my invoice). This is my IPv6 I bought: 2001:41d0:701:1100::35ab. My block ID is #188586. Note that the user User:2001:41D0:701:1100:0:0:0:35AB is me, and never contributed. Note that the related reverse hostname is gargantua.reyboz.it that is in my domain (see my home https://boz.reyboz.it). See the global contributions of that IPv6 (none): https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=2001%3A41D0%3A701%3A1100%3A0%3A0%3A0%3A35AB. For the third time, please allow me to contribute as logged-in user. I know that this problem was not introduced by you, but note I'm strongly against this software feature that blocks trusted people, just because we are "exiting from a weird Internet node". This is against good faith, this is against collaboration. Note that this is the third time I ask to be unlocked: User talk:Valerio Bozzolan bot and the third time I was unblocked successfully for the very same IP, but for some software reasons I need this again. Thank you for unblocking, again and sorry for your extra bureaucracy. ValerioBozz (talk) 19:51, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Unblock reason: I've granted you a 1-year local IP block exemption, these are not meant to be indefinite. The autoblock appears to have already expired, try again. — xaosflux Talk 00:30, 22 May 2023 (UTC) Reply

@Xaosflux: Thanks, but please extend this for 2-5 years, since otherwise I will have no benefit. I don't need this anymore in this moment (I have that grant, but the event finished, and I'm in my home again). If you cannot do this, I will try to ask for help from Trust & Safety, or feel free to suggest me whatever over entry point for this kind of personal cybersecurity assistance, to fix my issues with range blocks. --ValerioBozz (talk) 14:57, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
