This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

I like to request the usurpation of Special:CentralAuth/Ziv. I really love this name as it is short and memorable. It's hebrew an means brightness, brilliance, glory, effulgence. Ziv has only 4 edits made on May 4, 2010 and was since then inactive, so I'd like to claim it for myself.

If not possible, I have three others that I would like. But they all made a small ammounts of edits in the past.

Ysa, my old name shortened, has a total of 7, but inactive since 2006.

Nofar. Account made the small ammount of edits 13, 11 in heWP (10 are visible) 2 in Commons (not visible).

Elif, a banned user in heWP, back in 2009. This account certainly won't miss her name.

I have a few more on my list, but there's no point in listing them all now. Briefly, a few of them have a small number of edits, like the other I suggested but have been inactive for a long time, but I also have two or three names on there that are registered but don't have any edits.

In any case, I really hope that you guys can make me happy as an active user and let me take the user name Ziv, which has been inactive for a long time.
