Dear Stewards, first of all take into account English is not my first language (it's my 3rd actually).

While I respect the decision of using an automatic system to implement the unified global account (considering the big ammount of Wikimedia Users) under the basis of the user that has the biggest number of contributions, there may be cases where the best solution is not the number of contributions. I'm talking about cases with users of a similiar number of contributions but where other criterias (like antiquity, number of projects...) are more determinant; in this cases aplyying the contributuions criteria can be unfair and produce discriminatory consequences. That's the reason why apart from the automatic system, there must be a case-by-case system supervised by humans to correct and study the cases where the best solution according to equality, justice and fairness principles and the basic users rights may not be the solution aplyed auomatically by a "robot". I consider my case as one of this cases where the legitimate use of my "Beethoven" global account has been given by the automatic system to the wrong user (danish user), and I'm going to expose my reasons:
- 1. I registered my Spanish Wikipedia account (my first Wikimedia project) in July of 2005. The Danish usher registered in Danish Wikipedia (his first and only Wikimedia project) in December of 2011. I have spended 10 years of my life here in Wikipedia, working in a lot of projects and getting realotionship with lots of others users and Administrators from various Wikipedias. How is it possible that an user with 4 years existence can have the right to have the name I have been using for 10 years? Wouldn't it be more fair and logic to change the user name of the one that has been in the Wikimedia project for less time and therefore the consequences of changing would be less dramatic? There's a big gap difference of years in my opinion in this case.
- 2. During this 10 years here I have used and registered 6 Wikimedia projects Beethoven accounts [3 Wikipedias (spanish, catalan and german), 1 Wikiquote (catalan), 1 Wiktionary (spanish) and Wikimedia Commons]. The Danish usher until today has only registered and used 1 Wikipedia account (danish). In all those projects I have met lots of users and worked to improve Wikimedia projects from all possible perspectives. All of the users and Administrators I met and worked with, have known me as Beethoven for the last 10 years. Any change in my user name would be so difficult for me to repair. So how is it possible a single danish user can have the right to use the my name in my 6 different Wikimedia projects? Wouldn't it be more fair to make only 1 user name change (in the danish one) that change the name of 6 different projects?
- 3. Finally after explaining those 2 last important criterias and very determinant in my opinion because of its big gap difference I'm going to talk about the "most important criteria" according to the automatic sistem: contributions. Only in the Spanish Wikipedia I have 1,101 contributions. The Danish user has 1,849 contributions. In this case there's a difference of aprox 700 contributions in favour of the Danish user, nevertheless I consider 700 contributions to not to be itself a justifying fair fact to give hime the right to use the global account considering the other criterias I have already explained and that are more consistent and determinant. This is not a case with a big contributions difference. Having said that I have to specify and correct the "contributions difference maths" done by the automatic system. The system has erroneously counted my contributions, by only counting the difference between the "2 biggest local wiki accounts (dawiki and eswiki)", but it has omitted that I'm the owner of the other 5 Wikimedia projects (Wikipedias, Wikiquote, Wiktionary and Commons). So if we add the contributions made by me in all 6 Wikimedia projects we can see theres almost NO DIFFERENCE IN THE NUMBER OF CONTRIBUTIONS. The dozens of articles I have written in Spanish and Catalan Wikipedias, my Wikiquotes projects, all the images of my Commons account that can be seen in a vast number of articles of all languages of Wikipedia... everything taken into account makes the Contributions difference nonexistent, and therefore invalid criteria.

CONCLUSION: having explained all the reasons I hope I can finally get the use of my global Beethoven account. When I joined this world in 2005 I was a 12 years kid really amazed about Wikipedia and all that it represented, I was so happy helping improve this project. At that time I remember being the youngest contributor in the Spanish Wikipedia, and being helpt by lots of kind Administrators that used their time to teach the "young and immature Beethoven" the necessary skills to work and improve in the project. Now with university studies and finishing my degree I'm not contributing as much as I did before because the lack of time, but can't wait to come back to the project with all my new knowledge to improve it. To be honest after 10 years here and almost everyday visiting Wikipedia, I couldn't imagine that I would be myself in this situation. I have a special feeling with my Beethoven account, since it has been with me for almost all my life since I have use of memory. Losing Beethoven would be really sad for me, and I hope it doesn't happen.
Thanks for all your time Stewards, can't wait to hear about you soon!

--83.40.51.2 19:40, 20 March 2015 (UTC) }}

Dear Beethoven, I am very sorry to hear about your case. When two active users share a name there will always be someone who does not get the name. I understand your reasoning, however the reason the Danish user got the global account is not because of an automated system. He got the global account because he made it in 2014. Since he made the global account, he has the global account. I am very sorry, but I don't think we can change this without being unfair to the other person. There were several warnings the past years for people to unify their accounts and make them global. I see no direct solution to this situation, except that you pick a new name, maybe something very close to your current name. I am very sorry that it works out like this for you and I hope we can find a suitable solution. All the best, Taketa (talk) 04:48, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Well if the reason that the Danish user has the right to use my global account is because he registered a global account and I didn't, I think it's actually a more unfair situation than what I thought... that means anyone could have registered a Beethoven global account regardless of the current local existing wiki users and just "steal" their user names. But what's more important here is I don't remember have recieved any kind of warning or message telling me to unify my account to make tit global, nobody tell me that in any of my 6 wiki Discussion pages nor in my email... so how in the world I could have known that afer 10 years using my Beethoven I should have registered it another time to create a "global account"? It's impossible I could have done that if nobody told me. It's obvious.

But what's more curious/interesting here is that actually the Danish user recieved a private missage in his Discussion page telling him to register to have a global account. (You can check it here in his discussion page: https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brugerdiskussion:Beethoven#Global_konto). He recieved that private missage in 24 sep 2014, 23:13 and according to the Global account system he registered the Global account in 25 sep 2014. It's totally clear that the reason because he registered the global account (and I didn't) is because he recieved a message telling him to do it. So basically he recieved information I didn't had, putting me in an unfair and discriminatory situation.

I'm sorry but I can't accept this situation. When you say "I don't think we can change this without being unfair to the other person" I can't be more disagree. I think that after all the reasons I have explained the more fair solution would actually be changing the Danish "Beethoven" global user to me. This would be the solution that would fit more fairness consequences and results. Not doing anything at all and letting the situation as it is now is what makes it more unfair for all. --Beethoven 13:59, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Dear Beethoven, I understand, but my hands are tied. Choices need to be made and the automated system was made to make them. Privilege is given to the person who has the global account. Even if they had not had the global account already, the system would have appointed them the global account. If there is an "obvious" mistake we can overrule this. But in this case the other editor is a serious user as well. I cannot help, other then help you rename your accounts to another global name. I apologise for this response :(. I can do nothing. Taketa (talk) 15:49, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

I understand you can't do anything Taketa because the rules tell you so, and I respect that. Therefore I would like to talk to a higher rank/status Administrator or some WMF staff so my problem can be solved properly. I'm sure WMF staff won't be tied by the system and can apply a rational human solution to an unfair situation. I believe my case represents an obvious mistake made by the system that must be solved manually to prevent this unfair situation remaining. I won't accept any change in my user name based on a discriminatory and unfair system. Gonna write a quick summary of the case to refresh it all:

Summary of my case: according to the Wikimedia system a Danish Beethoven user with a single Danish Wikipedia account registered in 2011, can have the right to use my 6 Beethoven accounts of the Spanish, Catalan and German Wikipedias, the Catalan Wikiquote, the Spanish Wiktionary and the Commons registered in 2005. Both users have almost the same number of contributions. How is this even possible?

--Beethoven 02:32, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

You've had it explained to you how it is possible. No matter the situation, you would not have gotten the global name from the technical end. From the community end, as the stewards are telling you, the similar criteria are in place: you cannot usurp an account with significant contributions. That has never been an option since usurpation became possible. You have spoken with my boss, User:Rdicerb (WMF), you have spoken with me, the person in charge of this project, and you have spoken with numerous community members, all of whom are telling you the same thing: this is unfortunate, it's unfair, but it's just how it is. You say that there is a fair way to do this, and that is to give you the account. That is not fair to everyone, that is only fair to you, and that's not how fair works. That is not how this works. I am sorry that you are on the receiving end of this, but you are not the only person in this situation. I urge you to just please select a new account name of your own choosing. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 04:01, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Not done Global accounts and unifications have been available for years, and people have had the opportunity to apply and to do since 2008. There is currently a user with the global account, and there is little that can be done at this time with this situation. It is unfortunate that there are some who will lose out in the globalisation, and that is a historical legacy of the development and the imperfection of systems; and arguing about it is not going to change the result. We hope that you understand that this is the case. Maybe look at Beet Hoven or BeetHoven.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:59, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
As an active user and sysop of small projects, including ca.wikiquote (project where Beethoven is involved), I regret to say that the situation of the Wikimedia Foundation in many ways is becoming pathetic. Remember, this foundation (and all who work there) is supported through contributions and the work of thousands of volunteers. Whenever you are farer from this reality, and this time will be an ordinary user who will loose his identification and hallmark, but the rejection of workers outside the wiki world, sitting in the office with a passive and indifferent attitude against smaller projects and its volunteers is growing every day.
Put your feet on the ground quickly and stop despise those who really help to grow worldwide Wikimedia. --Xavi Dengra (MESSAGES) 13:56, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

First of all let me say that the Danish user just said he is going to accept a change made in his global acount in favour to me (Danish user message about the case). Secondly as I said hundreds of times I'm NOT going to accept any change in my user name made by an unfare and discriminatory system, so please stop asking me to choose a new user name and make that question to the danish user or to anyone, but not to me. Keegan (WMF) said: "You say that there is a fair way to do this, and that is to give you the account. That is not fair to everyone, that is only fair to you, and that's not how fair works" and as a 4 year Law student can tell you that's not true in my opinion. There's always a fair solution in ANY case. In real life cases tribunals and judges use the techcnique of "rights deliberation" (in spanish ponderación de derechos) to apply the fairness solution in one case where two-parts rights collide. In my case I insist that the fairness solution and the solution where less damage is made is giving me the use of my global account. I have explained myselg lots of times with obvious facts, and I'm starting to get support of the community. If it's necessary I'm going to make public my case contacting to all the Administratos of Spanish and Catalan Wikipedias that I have contact with, I'm gonna make a reddit post explaining it all or via Facebook... But I didn't and don't want to make it public so hard because I firmly believe the Wikimedia image will be damaged because of this attitude to my case, so I'm still trying to solve here using the Wikipedia tools.

Until now I have not hear any rational explanation of why the Danish user has the right to have my account. By telling me he has the right because he registered a global account and you didn't is not valid, because anyone could have registered a global account and steal my Beethoven username. And as I said nobody informed me about having to register a global account, it's desproportionate that after 10 years using the same username Im forced to change it without any explanation and contest possibility and 0 information about the existence of a global account.

  • Abstract: according to the Wikimedia system a Danish Beethoven user with a single Danish Wikipedia account registered in 2011, can have the right to use my 6 Beethoven accounts of the Spanish, Catalan and German Wikipedias, the Catalan Wikiquote, the Spanish Wiktionary and the Commons registered in 2005. Both users have almost the same number of contributions. How is this even possible?

The answer to my question can't be because "he registered a global account and you didn't", becuase as I said he was told to do it in his discussion page (he registered the day after he was told to do it) and I didn't. And because this answer can be applyed to anyone that register a global account and steals/usurps identity. I want a rational explanation, and as I know there is no rational explanation here because is clear to anyone eyes is unfair, I want the proper solution.

You can say: you have the right to use global account since you have been colaborating for 10 years and the Danish user only 4. You can say I have the right because I have been working in 6 different Wikimedia projects and the Danish user only 1. You can say I have the right because the Danish user has accepted a change in his user account, and I'm not accepting a change.

But what can you say in favour (rational response) of the Danish user?: the Danish user writes more interesting articles than you? the Danish user looks more nice person than you? seriously I'm trying to get an answer that is rational.

--Beethoven 14:57, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Dear all. I am a user on the Danish Wikipedia. I have followed the discussion about the username Beethoven.
Above the “Spanish Beethoven” states that “the Danish user just said he is going to accept a change made in his global acount in favour to me”. I can see no evidence of that on the talk page of the “Danish Beethoven”. On the contrary, the Danish user states: “I will, of course, abide to any decision made by the Wikimedia Foundation in this case”. He also states that he “have been unable to participate in the discussion of these problems with global accounts” due to the recent death of his sister.
I would like the Spanish Beethoven to respect that there are things more important than Wikipedia user names. He should leave the Danish user in peace to deal with his loss, and not ask the Danish user to make a decision about the account. Kind regards Savfisk (talk) 16:23, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Dear Savfisk, when the Danish user states "I will, of course, abide to any decision made by the Wikimedia Foundation in this case", I can see a direct evidence it means he's going to accept a change in his user name made by the Wikimedia Foundation. I respect your personal opinion about the case, but I linked the Danish user personal page when I made the explanation so it can be confirmed, I don't know if you are trying to say I'm trying to manipulate or what, I'm just trying to solve this issue as soon as possible.
Also when you state "I should leave the Danish user in peace to deal with his loss, and not ask the Danish user to make a decision about the account" I must say the Administrators told me to talk directly to the danish user to solve this issue. I'm the first one here I would have wanted this problem to be directly solved by the Aministration or WMF without having to contact myself with the Danish user, but since they seem to not be able to do it without the Danish user participation, I was told to talk him. I'm just trying to solve and unfair problem, I respect the Danish user and I hope he's not forced to make a decision that in my opinion should be made by the Administration, since it's an obvious case.
With my respects Savfisk, I think your response is not contributing or relevant for the case.--Beethoven 17:05, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you everyone who participated in this discussion. This is nothing personal, but please, (Spanish) Beethoven, try to understand that we, administrators, global renamers and stewards can't do anything for this. The user on the Danish Wikipedia has the global account, so we can't change it. You have to agree with it and choose another username. Unfortunately the things are like this, and continuing this never-ending discussion here won't change anything, thus archiving this. --Stryn (talk) 17:14, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

I won't accept ANY change in my user name made discriminately against my user rights and Wikimedia principles. I'm so dissappointed with the treatment I have recieved by the Wikimedia Foundation and since nobody here can help solving this unfair situation I'm gonna go for other ways to solve this situation properly. I know the community is with me and I'm grateful for the support recieved by them. --Beethoven 17:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the prompt response, but I see various users requesting retaining/usurping of accounts, why can I not do the same? As I explained, I signed up for the account almost ten years ago and would appreciate the opportunity to ask for arbitration. Please clarify. --Monto~temp (talk) 07:12, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
In those other cases the global account has no live edits (or just few at maximum). The user on jawp has 16 live edits. The global account was chosen per the edit count at the time when you were notified and the registeration date have not been taken into account. Regards, --Stryn (talk) 07:38, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for sharing this information. Unfortunately, I had no idea this SUL project was under way and, thus, did not have an opportunity to claim the global account for "Monto" sooner.
Although I have limited edits on my English Wikipedia account, I have been active with hundreds of edits over the years, largely anonymously. I, unfortunately, had not logged in to "Monto" during those activities. Perhaps naively, I thought it was the quality of the edit that was important, not the who of it all. Had I known the number of historical edits would be taken into account for this project and that this SUL project had even existed, I would have gladly logged in under "Monto" more frequently. In light of this, is there any way I can request arbitration with the Japanese WP user? I see the Japanese WP user's account has been inactive for ~four years now, so perhaps it would mean less to her/him than to me. Thank you for your consideration ----Monto~temp (talk) 19:00, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

The biggest one are, yes. (on fr.wikipedia.org, en.wikipedia.org, fr.wikisource.org, commons.wikipedia.org). So I sent an email to him, no answer yet. If after a week nobody answers, shall I update that request here for a renaming? BenjaminSonntag (talk) 05:41, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

I do not understand why you created Mark Lewis MacDonald account. This does not make any sense. Ruslik (talk) 20:11, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
Let me try again. I want to usurp User:Mark M globally, because I want control of that account so I can use it as a doppelganger account, and redirect to my main account. I still want my main account to be User:Mark L MacDonald. So I don't want my main account to usurp User:Mark M, right? So I created another account that can usurp User:Mark M. Yes? Let me know if that's still not clear. I don't know a simpler way to achieve what I want; if you do, please let me know. Mark M (talk) 17:25, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately when I try to create that account it says it is "too similar" to the account User:MarkM.. which I hadn't noticed before. That's fine with me, as long as nobody will be able to create the account User:Mark M now? Mark M (talk) 09:06, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Nick UA@global

There's no huge problem in creating such unused accounts. After SUL finalization is completed and stewards got access to the account merge tool, we can easily merge these two accounts. Meanwhile, we won't usurp accounts that were notified by the WMF of the upcoming rename. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:52, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
@DerHexer: The problem is that I have to avoid editing enwiki/dewiki now, because for each edit there I have to log out as NickK, log in as Nick_UA, log out as Nick_UA and login again as NickK elsewhere. Is it possible at least to delete the global account sulutil:Nick_UA in the meanwhile? I would not mind getting them renamed to something like Nick_UA~dewiki, as I will merge them anyway.
