Ziko van Dijk in 2017

Hello, I am Ziko van Dijk, a German who lives in the Netherlands. I studied history and German language and started to edit Wikipedia in 2003. In the meanwhile, I had the privilege to collect a lot of experiences in the Wikimedia world. Among other subjects, I am interested in local politics, fiction and photography.

In the last decade I have presented Wikipedia and related topics at the secondary and tertiary level. For example I gave seminars at the universities of Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen (DE), about linguistics, plagiarism, wikis and collaborative writing. I organized and tought classes in Germany, the Netherlandsshan and Belgium. At Wikimanias and other Wikimedia events I presented topics related to education with regard to Wikipedia; I remember very fondly the excellent "Training the trainers" provided by WMUK. In 2010-2013 I was a member of WMDE's team of Wikipedia trainers, now the Wiki-Team.de. In 2014 I co-created the wiki encyclopedia Klexikon for children, and became a member of the Zentrale für Unterrichtsmedien im Internet e.V. (a German association of educators interested in OER and the Internet).

At the moment, my primary interest is to get a better and deeper understanding of wikis in general. I think that this helps me to improve my understanding of Wikipedia in the classroom: Wikipedia as a learning platform, Wikipedia as a means to reflect on quotable sources, readability, open educational resources etc. This makes me very curious about the diverse experiences of other people working in the field.

I was the chair of Wikimedia Nederland and the deputy chair of the shortlived council of Wikimedia organizations. In this time, I guided WMNL through the difficult period of professionalization and stabilization. I am a co-founder of ELiSo, the Wikimedia User Group for Esperanto speakers.

As a board member of the WUG Wikipedia & Education, I would like to connect people from different backgrounds. Some concentrate on Wikidata, others on Wiktionary. For some, Wikipedia & Education is a hobby and an extension of pro wiki and pro chapter work. To others, it is part of their job, and they find themselves within the boundaries of their respective institutions. I want to help them to find ressources and colleagues who are working on similar topics. I want to contribute to a smooth, efficient and pleasant working atmosphere on the board.

At the moment, the WUG is still in a relatively early phase. This is a time primarily to listen to each other and find out what are the most urgent next steps. Possibly, we need to collect ideas about the way the WUG can cooperate with the Wikimedia Foundation and other Wikimedia organizations. With the many people who are interested in education, and the many activities and results in the last decade, I am optimistic about the future of the WUG and looking forward to support it.

Hello everyone, my name is Vojtěch, I am 27, and I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I have been a Wikipedian since 2007 and member of Wikimedia Czech Republic since 2011. I am a doctoral student of molecular & cell biology in my 'real life', although my 'real' and 'virtual' lives are very much intertwined these days.

Me and Wikipedia & Education | I started the Czech Wikipedia education program in 2011 and I thought it was such a original idea! A few months later I found out that there are very similar initiatives popping up all around the world. I took part in the education coop kick-off meeting of education program leaders in Prague in 2014. Then I watched as the coop slowly evolved into collab and now a user group; sometimes I was more active, sometimes I was a passive viewer. In the last 2 years, I have mainly advocated for the need for a good course management tool and negotiated the details of the switch from the old 'extension' towards the Dashboard.

Relevant experiences | I think I have something to tell both as a past project leader of an education program (volunteering for Wikimedia Czech Republic) as well a a board member (and later chair) of Wikimedia Czech Republic. In the latter role, I had a chance to oversee the professionalization of our chapter, leading negotiations with the WMF, working on budgets and all sorts of Wikimedia grant proposals, hiring employees and distributing work. As a member of the former Education Collaborative, I became quite aware of the needs of our Education community and I will do my best to help fulfill them.

My priorities | No matter if I become a member of the board or not, I have a few priorities I'd like to push forward in the UG. First and foremost, I'd like to make sure that all voices are heard and that we build a collective strategy. In this I also envision a very strong and meaningful collaboration with the people in the Education team at WMF and also the people at the Wiki Education Foundation. Together with them, we should advocate for the needs of the Education community, such as a reliable and well-supported course-management tool, which is of course my long-term interest.

Also: Did you just finish reading this? Maybe you should nominate yourself too!

Ananth-Subray

My name Ananth Subray, I am Kannada Wikipedian and I hail from Bangalore, India. I have been volunteering for the movement from past 4 years and have been part of many local, national and international projects. Over these years, I have engaged myself in various projects, from collaborating with various Educational institutions, Libraries and GLAM institutions, to being one of the co-ordinators/Resource person of Wikipedia Education program at Christ University, Mediawiki Training and Train the Trainer programs in India.

As a volunteer, I have worked with many community members, assisting and helping them in different Wikimedia projects. Some of my major contributions are helping Tamil community members to implement Wikidata templates, helped to revamp the main page of Punjabi Wikisource and to import gadgets, helped in structuring the Wikisource handbook and many others. I was also part of Wiki-Asian month, WCI edit-a-thon, Project tiger edit-a-thon and women's day edit-a-thon.

Working with the Access to Knowledge team at the Centre for Internet and Society has helped me in understanding the communities very closely, meeting new people, writing Grants applications, reports. I work as an Program Associate for Education Program at A2K, as a part of which I have been a part of different education programs, I take orientation classes and guide students involved in the education programs, I have also conducted sessions on Wikipedia editing and how to contribute to various Wikimedia projects. Being involved in the Education program from last 3 years, I believe certificate course at Christ WEP, which is followed by internships for the students at The Centre for Internet and Society is one of the successful projects I have worked on. The certificate course helps the students to learn digitisation skills and internship at CIS provides them a handson experience.

I will bring the perspective of Education program and Wikimedia movement on board, and the experiences I have gathered in working along with these communities will bring diversity to the board. Wikimedia projects as a tool for education are still a challenge in India, As a board member I would like to reach out to the people from different parts of the world, learn from them and share it with the local community. I would also like to collaborate with different Education leaders to develop resources for WEP, which can be localised by different community members.

I am Krishna Chaitanya Velaga. I am from Andhra Pradesh, India, and currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering. However, I am primarily interested in the studies of military history, and other warfare-related disciplines. I am also a great fan of a multidisciplinary approach to build knowledge and collective wisdom. I feel that Wikipedia, along with its sister projects, enormously helps for the cause. About my Wiki-experience, I've been contributing to Wikipedia and its sister projects since 2014. I am active on English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. I mostly add to the topics related to Indian military history, and have been closely associated with WikiProject Military History, for which I've served as a coordinator between September 2017 and September 2018. Over time, I've developed a keen interest to contribute for higher levels of article assessments, and contributed to several featured and good articles. I also supported the reviewing process by reviewing several nominations at FA and GA candidature.

After attending the Train the Trainer 2017 program by CIS-A2K, I was keen to introduce Wikipedia in my college. After several discussions and planning, I've organised two workshops at my college, the first one was conducted in September 2017, report can be seen here, and the second workshop was organized in November 2017, as a follow-up to the first workshop, its report can be seen here. Between the first and second workshops, and post second edit-a-thon, I've organised several weekly meetups in college, which eventually led to the successful establishment of a Wiki-club in my college, VVIT WikiConnect. This academic year, we've been working through an annual plan (funded by WMF) with several training and skill building activities for Wikimedia projects. Since the college is not yet autonomous, it has to follow the norms set by the university, so a formal education program hasn't been possible. However, I've tried to make things sound a bit official by starting an English Wikipedia Training Program 2018 (currently ongoing), in which students of interest can take part in the program, and upon successful completed are awarded a certificate of completion.

I am also a University Innovation Fellow of Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University. This fellowship aims to bring change in the higher education system by sharing the best practices of implementing educational models and be changemakers on our campus to bring in innovation regarding education, student experiences, campus life etc. This is a network of 1500 fellows from 230 schools, spread across ten countries. I've also organised several other Wikimedia outreach activities including WLM2017 India, and have been volunteering for The Wikipedia Library for partnerships, outreach, and accounts, for the past one year.

As this user group is currently developing and has a great potential to explore the possibilities of WEPs in Asian and African regions. I am also keen to work on the slightly ignored model of Wikipedia in Education, which is the open program for students. By this, I mean to say that there are several educational institutions, which are not yet universities, and function under universities. These institutions don't have the liberty to develop their courses, such as a formal WEP. If we're looking for formal education programs where all the students should participate for university credits or scores, we are loosing out many opportunities. There are ways where Wikipedia still can be used a tool in education in such cases, by engaging interested students for outreach activities and mentoring them to create a community of student editors (probably a Wiki-club) who regularly contribute Wikimedia projects. This we'll have more options open, and there is a chance to bring in the diversity of Wikimedia projects in education. For instance, students pursuing computer science engineering can work on MediaWiki. If elected, apart from disseminating the mentioned duties, I would like to contribute to set up processes for the user group, which can be useful for a long-term sustainable model. Also support volunteers on building new education programs, especially those that are not similar to the conventional model.

Note: Please see my replies to Jaole's questions on the talk page.

Who I am
Hello everyone, my name is Shani Evenstein Sigalov and I am an Israeli Wikimedian. I'm an academic and an educational technologies. I work as an EdTech Innovation Strategist at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, as well as a lecturer teaching Wikipedia & Wikidata at Tel Aviv University (TAU). I'm also a PhD candidate at the School of Education at TAU, and my research focuses on Wikidata as a learning platform. I have a BA in English Lit and French Culture, and an MA in Education, focusing on Technology & Learning. My MA thesis focused on implementing Wikipedia into the academic curriculum and an academic article I wrote on the subject was published in "Education and Information Technologies", by Springer Nature, in 2016.[1]
What I do in the Wikiverse
My main focus contributing to our movement has always been Wiki Outreach both locally and globally. After attending Wikimania Haifa, I joined the Hebrew Wikipedia community and became a member of Wikimedia Israel. Since joining, I've led a variety of educational initiatives. In addition, I served as WM-IL's National GLAM Projects Coordinator, leading collaborations with the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, the National Library of Israel and the Israeli Cartoon and Caricature Museum (to name a few). I've also been been a WM-IL board member for about 2 years. On Jan 2014 I resigned both roles to focus on my M.A. My thesis, which focused on a new course model I've developed for implementing Wikipedia into the academic curriculum. I keep being involved with the chapter and supports GLAM-Wiki, EDU-Wiki, WikiWomen & Wikidata initiatives, as well as serve as a He-Wiki Admin. Internationally, I've been involved in Wikipedia & Education, Wikipedia & Medicine, GLAM-Wiki, (including initiating a collaboration with TED), Wikipedia & Libraries, WikiWomen & Wikidata. I lecture about Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Movement frequently, lead various workshops teaching Wiki-literacy and wiki-editing to newcomers, and support fellow faculty in adding Wikipedia-related assignments into their curriculum. In recent years, I've become especially interested in Wikidata, which has become a focus in many of the training I lead.
Relevant Wiki-Milestones & Experience

  • On October 2013 I opened the Wiki-Med course at the Tel-Aviv University.[2] This is a for-credit elective course, the first of its kind, which gives Med students academic credit for editing Wikipedia and its sister projects. So far, my students wrote over 270 medical-related articles that have gained over 6 million page views.
  • On October 2015, a new for-credit course focusing on contributing to Wikipedia opened at Tel Aviv University. This course is available to all undergraduate. student on campus from all discipline, and this coming year the course will feature
  • On September 2017, I opened a new Wiki-Med elective at the NY/American Medical Program at Sackler School of Medicine, where Amarican & Canadian Med students learned to contribute medical-related information to En-Wiki, as well as conduct related research.
  • I am a founding member of the Wikipedia Education Collaborative since its conception. While part of this group, I have been heavily involved with the development and implementation of the Wiki Programs & Events Dashboard (WikiPED), curation of the education work done globally, mentoring emerging Wikimedians and thinking about the future of our global work strategically. During WMCon 2017, I have initiated and worked towards this group becoming an official affiliate, and was thrilled to see this vision come to life when the Wikipedia & Education User Group was formally approved as an affiliate.
  • I'm also a founding member of the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group and while I chose not to be part of its board, I follow & support their work.
  • I've been a board member of the WikiProject Medicine Foundation since January 2017, and as of August 2017 serve as the User Group's chairperson. The group is now on a process of becoming a Thematic Organization.

Priorities and areas of focus
I strongly believe that our work requires suitable infrastructure, part of which is the current wikiPED, among other technological tools required to better curate and support our work. I will continue to push for the right tools to be developed and be supported over time. I'm also interested in continuing the efforts for curating our work, as I believe it's a crucial step in measuring our impact and success and advocating for what we do in and outside the movement. I will continue to develop resources and support Wikimedians taking their first steps in starting their own Wiki & Education initiative. As an outreach expert, I am likely to initiate new global collaborations that will enhance the reach of Wiki & Education worldwide. Finally, as a global thematic group, I envision us working closely together with the Education Team at the WMF, as well as with local chapters and affiliates. I will make sure to nurture these contacts and collaborations as we grow into a strong, established and impactful group.

Nurunnaby Chowdhury (Hasive)
The following discussion is closed: Dear all, I'm sorry to inform you all I withdraw my candidacy. All the best for all members who take responsibilities as new board. NC Hasivetalk 13:21, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Hasive, I am from Bangladesh. I involved with Wikipedia since 2004 but started contributing on 2008. I am an active Wikipedian and one of active administrator of Bengali Wikipedia. I'm also a board member of Wikimedia Bangladesh. I am serving as a Grants Advisory Committee & Individual Engagement Grants committee member for several years’ now and evaluate many various grant applications. As a consultant to Bangladesh National Museum, I advise in the evaluation process of various educational programs. I am active on Bengali and English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. I'm the coordinator of Wikidata:Wikiproject Bangladesh.

As a co-organizer, I’ve been part of the Wiki Loves Monuments & Wiki Love Earth in Bangladesh from the beginning. Also, I involve in the most large event as a lead organizer in Bangladesh. I have overnighted a couple of activities in the past where I helped various educational institute to arrange program. I have been actively involved with the Education based activities for a long time. Under my leadership we successfully organized the Wikipedia Education Program in seven divisions on the Bengali Wikipedia.

I have experience to work in the education sector in Bangladesh as well as in different countries. I am a co-founder and outreach coordinator of Open Education Resource initiative in Bangladesh. I also worked as an Education Coordinator with Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee and the Society for the Popularization of Science in Bangladesh, where I organized different type of workshops, seminars and daylong training programs about open education around the country. Our activities covered secondary level school, colleges and universities. I have also been actively involved in open education and leading such initiatives through the Creative Commons Open education platform and Open Knowledge International.

The tenets upon which Wikipedia is built makes it the ideal education platform, its provision of an exchange of knowledge from both consumers and volunteers does not only encourage learning and sharing but also inhibits the foundations of volunteering. Wikipedia, the fourth largest website in the world does not only serve knowledge to its users but breeds a culture of trust and boldness which is taught in our education today. The underlying reasons for these important values is to allow students to believe in consensus and their ability to challenge the status quo. It being one of the best open knowledge platforms where anyone is able to gather free knowledge on different topics and make it accessible, makes it the go to place for every student. It even becomes more exciting for students when they realize they can be a part of that knowledge sharing process and maintain their contributions on Wikipedia provides them with the pride of serving a general good. Not forgetting the skills students acquire in the process of contributing; improved research skills, proper citation skills, improved copy edit skills among just a few to mention.

In the past 12 years I have met at least 80,000 students from around the country on different levels who have expressed their sincere gratitude for the invention of Wikipedia. The growing interest in Wikipedia is because of its online nature and the related growing penetration of internet enabled devices in the world.

Wikipedia & Education user group is currently developing and as my thoughts this is the one of place to help WEP’s in Asian regions. In Asia many groups are working on WEPs. As Wikipedia in Education is a good model now so my interest to work on this area. Last few years I was worked on school, colleges level students. Now my focus on to work with University, where we may started Wikipedia as a course and a good research subjects. As in Wikipedia so many tools already available and we need to collaborate with as much as educational institutions. To engage students, teachers with several outreach program we may engage more new community. Especially Wiki club in university, college and school is good idea. If elected, I would like to contribute to set up the process that help a lots with so many educators. Not only a single time will it help for long-term. Also share my experience and help others community people to learn and build a strong relationship.

I'm Filip Maljković from Serbia, where I live (specifically in Belgrade). I'm 30 years old and I have a masters degree in Electrical Engineering (IT). I work as a programmer (lead software developer) in a local IT company.

I've been involved with the Wikimedia movement from 2004, but really started editing actively in 2005. My home wiki is Serbian Wikipedia, where I have over 90 thousand edits, and where I serve as an administrator and one of three checkusers. In the Wikimedia movement I've had many roles and responsibilities: I served as a steward for several years, I'm the principal OTRS member for Serbian language queues, I hold advanced rights on other Serbian language Wikimedia projects, I'm the IRC Group Contacts chair, I participated in the Wikimania Scholarship Committee.

I'm one of the founders of Wikimedia Serbia, one of the earliest chapters in the Wikimedia world, which I've been a president of in the past 5 years, and a board member since its creation in 2005. As part of my volunteer work in Wikimedia Serbia, I've organized and participated in many programs and events throughout the years: I've organized more than a hundred local meetups, several national, regional and international conferences, I've been a part of our Education program, GLAM program, volunteer support program etc. I've actively participated in the selection process of all of Wikimedia Serbia employees and residents, both past and present. As a long term president, I've lead the organization and contributed to it being a stable organization with a €100k annual budget and 4 employees. I also oversee the work of those employees and am involved with administration and bureaucracies of the chapter, being its legal representative. I've appeared in several local TV and radio shows, as well as in printed and online media, where I've been sort of a spokesperson for both Wikipedia and Wikimedia Serbia.

I've been involved with Wikimedia Serbia education activities since their early days in 2005, when I held my first presentation to the students of a local university (I was still in high school back then). At first we focused primarily on University level activities and I participated in all facets of the program: presentation to students and subsequent communication with them, following their work on-wiki and final evaluation. As Wikimedia Serbia started to broaden its activities to other levels of education, we started to think about paid staff with education program tasks. So in recent years, our Education Program Manager and other volunteers handle direct work with students, whereas nowadays I'm mostly involved with our Professional Development Seminars, where we teach teachers about Wikipedia, Wikimedia and how wiki tools could be used in class. We've had great successes in those areas in the past 4 years.

In the Wikimedia movement, I've participated in many conferences: 11 Wikimanias, 5 Wikimedia Conferences, 3 CEE conferences, Diversity Conference, 3 Wikimedia Collab meetings, several other international meetings around the world as well as numerous events in Serbia. I've been a part of the Wikimedia Education Collaborative since the summer of 2014, almost since its inception. In the Collab I've been mostly concerned with mentoring new and inexperienced people who want to start an Education program or have just started one. The mentoring experiences have been quite rewarding and interesting and I think the Wikipedia & Education User Group is well poised to continue that work and facilitate mentorships around the world. Also, as a part of the former Collab, I've been one of three people communicating with AffCom regarding the formal creation of this user group.

I believe I'm suitable for this role because:

  • I have a very long experience being a board member of a highly active organization
  • I have a very long experience in creating, organizing, curating and conducting educational projects in different educational contexts (albeit within a single locale)
  • I have experience in communicating with different education project leaders and novices from around the world
  • I have actively participated in the Wikimedia Education Collab, and I see this user group as a healthier extension of the former group
  • I have vast experience in managing and mentoring people, both in the Wikimedia world and in my professional career
  • Most importantly, I believe in our mission and I'm willing to contribute some of my time to fulfilling that mission through work in this user group

  40.   Strong support Filip's dedicated many hours to getting this group going, and his excellent leadership in that effort would translate well to a position on the board. He's also incredibly experienced in leading an excellent education program in Serbia. I strongly endorse his board candidacy. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:37, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm Susanna Mkrtchyan from Yerevan, Armenia. I have a PHD in Computer science. I work as a leading scientist at Institute for Informatics and Automation systems. I am one of the founders of Wikimedia Armenia in 2013 and since then I am the Chair of WM AM.

I started editing Wikipedia in 2010 and still active in my home wiki, Armenian Wikipedia, continue editing by now.

Since 2011 I created several new educational wikiprojects: Wikclub, Wikicamp, Wiki loves science, and teachers Wiki training. First two projects were recognized by Wikimedia movement as the coolest Wikimedia projects in 2014 and 2016 appropriately. On 2015 I was honorably mentioned by Jimmy Wells the Wikipedian of the year.

I very believe in power of Wikipedia and other wiki projects as an educational tool for all grades of schools, high schools and universities and for all ages. Editing Wikipedia helps human to enhance verbal and writing abilities, fluently form thoughts, and particularly concentration and thinking abilities.
