Beta WikiversityEdit

Hi Jayprakash, I see you are quite active and productive on Beta Wikiversity at the moment. Perhaps you can respond at Proposals for closing projects/Move Beta Wikiversity to Incubator#Value? if you feel that your work on Beta Wikiversity would not be possible if your project was moved to the Incubator. --John Vandenberg (talk) 06:35, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

New community space for IdeaLab on ConnectEdit

Hi folks. If you're receiving this message, you've contributed to IdeaLab or an Inspire Campaign this year. Thanks for participating to develop ideas and review ones from other Wikimedians.

We are preparing some changes to IdeaLab and Inspire Campaigns. One of these changes is a new community space on Connect, where Wikimedians can find each other based on common activities or skills, and ask questions about the space. You are invited to join this community space for IdeaLab, especially if you would ever consider needing to find contributors with certain skills (like design or project management) or would like to offer your skills to others in our movement. To join, please proceed to Connect/IdeaLab and click on the "Add yourself" button on the right. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) 19:53, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Inspire Campaign on Measuring Community HealthEdit

Do you have an idea about how to measure the health of your community? Do you want to review ideas that others have submitted? Through August 10th, we are inviting ideas on how to capture the well-being of Wikimedia communities, in terms of matters like conflict resolution, effective content creation, and being able to contribute in a collaborative environment. Ideas can be focused on either quantitative techniques, such as gathering raw data, or qualitative techniques, like surveying contributors. If you are submitting an idea, guidance is available for how to move your idea into implementation, such as through a grant or starting a Phabricator task to engage with developers.

If you're interested, consider joining the Inspire Campaign. I JethroBT (WMF) 17:13, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Timeless Newsletter • Issue 1Edit

Newsletter • July 2018

Welcome to the first issue of the Timeless newsletter! This issue is being sent or forwarded to everyone who has at some point expressed an interest in the project, give or take, as well as a couple of other potentially relevant pages, so if you would like to continue (or start) receiving this newsletter directly, please sign up for further updates on the meta page.

The news:

The Timeless grant has been selected for funding, and the project is now underway!

While I've had a somewhat slow start working on the project for health reasons, I'm pleased to announce that everything described in the proposal is now either happening, or on its way to happening.

Current progress:

  • The project now has a hub on Meta to serve as a directory for the various related pages, workboards, and local discussions and help pages. It's probably incomplete, especially with regards to specific language projects that might have local pages for Timeless, so if you know of others, please add them!
  • Outreach: I've been talking to various people and groups directly about skinning, desktop/mobile interfaces, project management, specific component support, and other things, and have begun to compile a very shoddy list of skinning problems and random issues on based on this. Some of this may inform the direction of this project, or possibly this project will result in building a more proper list that can then be used for other things. We shall see.
  • Some development - task triage, code review, bug fixing, and various rabbit holes involving ...overflows.

General plan for the future:

  • Triage the rest of the workboard.
  • Catch up with all the talkpages and other bug reports that have been left various other places that are not the project workboard
  • Do all the bug fixes/features/other things!
  • Some proposals aimed at Commons and Wikisource in particular (maybe, we'll see)

Essentially, the grant as written shall be carried out. This was the plan, and remains the plan. Timelines remain fuzzy, but while there have been some initial delays, I don't particularly expect the timeline for project as a whole to change a whole lot.

Also, for anyone at Wikimania right now: I am also at Wikimania. Come talk to me in person!

Thank you all for your interest and support thus far!

The Community Wishlist SurveyEdit

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018Edit

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Heritage GLAMEdit

Thank You for joining. Eligibility confirmed for round 1. You can keep a watch on grant and the talk page.Wikilover90 (talk) 14:04, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Jayprakash ji,

English Wikipedia Tool Refill/Refill2 is looking for a maintainer. It would be great if you take a lead and help indic wikis as well as other wikis in making this tool accessable to all. The link of the same is seen at English Wikipedia --Tiven2240 (talk) 04:28, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Tiven2240 Ji, Thanks for your appreciation to notify me. But I can't take this responsibly at this time. Because as a Lead developer in Indic-TechCom, We are already running and maintenance of some tools. you don't know how busy I am. We already have 6 months work plan like QR code gen, Indic Wikisource contest tools, SectionImporter, CountDownClock Tools and many more. These are High priority on Our Workboard.--Jayprakash >>> Talk 12:34, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
What is Section-Importer and CountDownClock? Can you point to the phab tickets? Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 13:13, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Hello Winged Blades of Godric, Section-Importer tool for import sections from other wikis. See more deatils on Indic-TechCom/Requests#How_to_import_the_translations_from_en.wikt_to_ta.wikt And CountDownClock is javascript based count down clock for Contests. where contests end time will change dynamically. For UserScripts we does not create phab tickets. We uses Phab only for Toolsforge Tools and MediaWiki. Thanks :)--Jayprakash >>> Talk 18:45, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
That request (esp. the terminologies) is problematic. Importing in media-wiki-software has a specific meaning and it preserves history. Sections can never be imported because you can't snip out the history or do something like that.
What the OP is (probably) asking for is some script/bot that will automate the copy-paste of the translation sections from en.wikt entries to corresponding entries over ta.wikt. This can be done, though. Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 19:05, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

A denied requestEdit

  • Also, w.r.t to a request that you denied over the board, you might wish to see the operations of this and this bot. Setting up (and localizing) is pretty easy......
  • Do you develop user-scripts only or do you write bots et al, too? Are you familiar with the framework? Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 19:30, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Hello Winged Blades of Godric Ji,
  1. The request is about to add padlock automatically without add any template. This can only be done by MediaWiki extension or Javascript. Yes, of course, we can run the bot to manage templates on protected pages. But this was not part of the request.
  2. I am MediaWiki Developer who works on MediaWiki-HTMLForm mainly. See Gerrit Wikimedia. But now I am also working on UserScript for Indic-Communities. I did not create any bot script yet. But I have created some MediaWiki API lib in Python. And will learn framework soon. :)--Jayprakash >>> Talk 09:05, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Floatable edit buttonsEdit

  • Why shall I see an edit-link for the contributions-page or pages protected to an level, that I cannot edit? In technical terms, why are you not using an API query to find out whether the page can be edited by the user, at all?
  • For one, there exists better methods to achieve the objectives, without sacrificing interface-design by ugly big buttons (except when necessary). It is highly concerning that anybody visiting ta.wikt sees such ugly buttons, being forced on them and I vividly dislike such tinkering with common css.
  • At any case, see this user-script, which allows an user to edit the part. section (he/she is currently hovering over) by pressing the Alt+Shift+D in Chrome/Firefox and Alt+E in Edge/IE. No need see those ugly buttons. Obviously, the exact key (D) can be altered per user-wishes.
  • The access-key to edit the entire page, is Alt+Shift+E in Chrome and Firefox. Edge/IE supports Alt+E.
  • Please advise others to extensively use the new 2017 wikitext editor. It enables an entire floating bar including but not limited to preview and save button; in a far decent manner.
  • If they wish for some specific local toolbar; I can add that.
Issue 1 has fixed now. Thanks for reporting :)--Jayprakash >>> Talk 09:17, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Why are you developing an extension? And, why do you think adding it to core would not be a bloat? How does this template; (dependent on a Lua Module) does not serve your purpose? Even, if you want a running timer; we can implement that by scripts (and outside calls) without any extension, as such.Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 06:34, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

We have already developed a MediaWiki extension for the countdown clock for the third party MediaWiki sites. See mw:Extension:CountDownClock. we are planning it to deploy over Wikimedia sites. But this will not an easy task. See mw:Review queue. We have to do many things like writing unit testing etc. CountDownClock which I mentioned above will javascript based script. en:Template:Countdown will never help us. because Wikimedia site has strong coaching. There is a disaster example of using this template. See what happened when a community member used this template in Site Notice [1]. The Script is about to create. But There will be some Performance issue. Because uses hits wiki sites over million times. And Loading script again and again maybe create Performance issue. So I will create phab ticket to get clearance from Performance-Team. :)--Jayprakash >>> Talk 08:42, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

What's the engine that you are using? Tesseract? Or any derivative, thereof? Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 07:22, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

We are not using Tesseract due to phab:T208711#4780257. At this time, we are using google engine. And waiting for migration to Debian Stretch.--Jayprakash >>> Talk 08:15, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Techcom wikiEdit

What happens over that fishbowl wiki and what it's used for? Who have access? Winged Blades of Godric (talk) 07:22, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

I just setup this wiki last night. this wiki will use by team member internally like discussing any security loophole of tools and sharing technical experience to the others team member. Currently, I have access to this wiki. But soon other member will also have access. :)--Jayprakash >>> Talk 08:08, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
