Wikidata edit

Hi. On the meta 100wikidays page, I noticed how carefully you enter the wikidata numbers related to the articles you created during the challenge. But sometimes they are missing. Why don't you create them yourself ? It's easy. Wikidata is a very powerful tool, and knowing how it works is quite useful. Best, Trace (talk) 23:03, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Trace, thank you for dropping a line... actually I tried but I don't have access to that link...there is something wrong with the available link...so hopefully I'll get it rectified soon and then will definitely generate the numbers for the unavailable articles.--Dr. Manavpreet Kaur (talk) 08:39, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well, just go to wikidata and paste the name of the article you have just created into the search field : if it doesn't exist, you will have the option to create a new item.

If you do create it, you will type its name in its language, and also its description if you want to. Then you press "Create " to create it.

Once it is created, you can add the link to the wiki where you created it - in your case, the punjabi wiki. After that, you can add translations and descriptions in more languages, and even statements about your article, such as "topic's main category", "subclass of" or "instance of"...

Have a look at Gastroenteritis Viral on wikidata : the item has many statements, such as :

subclass of
gastrointestinal disease
has cause
rotavirus
symptoms
vomiting, diarrhea

etc. These informations are properly filed and can be read by robots to improve content on other wikis, to help translating pages, to create new ones by crossing files and so on : it is very useful to use wikidata because it is a way to share knowledge outside the boundaries of your own language.

Even if you only create items without filling in the statements !

Absence of T Shirts @ WikiConference India 2016 program edit

Hello.

I attended WikiConference India 2016 program on 5, 6 and 7, but it is sad that participation T Shirts were not provided at the event. --Muzammil (talk) 17:13, 12 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Muzammil, I'm really sorry that you didn't get the t-shirt. We distributed the t-shirts on 6th Aug, 2016 from 1:00 PM onwards. In some cases, we gave the t-shirts for all the candidates from one community to one of its member. We even went to Regenta Hotel to distribute the t-shirts and the certificates. Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction/pa edit

Hi! Thank you for the translation. But were you by chance using machine translation to do it? I am fine with machine translation as long as you proofread the text after it, but it seems that you have damaged translation variables. All those "$ref2" and such must appear in the translation exactly as in the original text. Could you fix it? It will also make the errors at the bottom of the page to disappear. Satdeep Gill, could you help with this, please? --Base (talk) 12:28, 13 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Yes I have used the machine but I have proofread the text and assure you that its the correct version and reflects the message clearly. I will check and rectify the errors. Thank you :) Manavpreet Kaur (talk) 19:02, 13 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for pointing out the errors to me. I have fixed them. Manavpreet Kaur (talk) 21:06, 13 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Last minute search for jurors for the upcoming Wiki Science Competition edit

Hi, I don't know if you crossed some of the messages I left on English or French or Spanish wikipedia, wikidata, commons and wikiversity about this event.

I am checking with Ivo Kruusamägi from Wikimedia Estonia the composition of the final jury. We did our best to keep it balanced by continent, gender, field etc but in the end it is still a little bit eurocentric. I mean, it is good they are not all from Estonia and Italy, but of course it could have been better. Finding 15 names (and other one for more national juries) to help was not easy, in the end. I did gather some "maybes" from China and India in private that might be used next time, including people in national juries that we can promote but so far I could only reduce the gender unbalance.

I hope that the results will promote science around the globe in any case. As a last appropriate effort now that more urgent issues have been addressed and we are finalizing the main organization, I am looking all the profiles of active wikimedians from or related to Africa, South American Oceania or Asia with a possible public name and surname (as a form of transparency, jurors should be public figure) and a scientific or technological education or position. Like yours.

Would you be interested in joining us to be a juror in the second-level jury? I am sure that next time we will find new additional contacts and I will not contact you at the last minute. Of course, if we can finally get two or three new names, we can promote one of them, with the best scientific background, to the final jury too.

Even you don't have time, could you help us also in promoting the event amongst people you know or mailing lists or groups you have joined? This will be also useful to promote more national juries next time. It was already hard to organize one in parallel to this, we did our best to promote initiatives on all the continents.

In any case thank you in advance.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:19, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow up edit

Hello Manavpreet Kaur,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

Come join Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women again! <3 edit

Get a postcard from one of the countries in red :)

Hello, Manavpreet ! You receive this message because last year you took part in the CEE Women challenge. This year the challenge repeats, and it will take longer: from now until the end of May (about 10 weeks).

Please, feel invited to visit the page Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women and join the challenge again. Help have more notable women from Central and Eastern Europe in more language versions globally, including Panjabi. We again have a list of ideas for biographic articles of women from all over the CEE.

What is different this year is that now you can set your own minimal number of articles as a measure of your challenge (i don't advise you to challenge yourself with more than 70 ;) 10-20 is perfect!). Also, you can receive as a prize a postcard not only from Bulgaria (as in 2017), but also from a list of countries from CEE and around the world. Apart of being a receiver, you can also opt to be a sender of postcards from your country to some of the other participants! That would also be awesome!

Thank you in advance for any contribution you make to CEE Women, and for spreading the word in your local wiki community! Love, Vassia / Spiritia 18:36, 24 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018 edit

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

Wikimania Ambassador edit

Hi!

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

Discussion on the Brand Project edit

Hi Manavpreet Kaur,

I will contact you as you have registered as a member of WikiDonne User Group. As you may know, these days we are discussing the Brand Project of the Wikimedia movement, a naming and design system that concerns the Wikimedia movement, the affiliates (user group, chapters and thematic organizations) and WMF. One group discussion has been launched on Meta, another on WikiDonne project discussion page in Italian Wikipedia and a call is scheduled on Saturday 27 June at 17.30 (CEST). I invite you to take part in the discussions and express your opinion. A summary of the discussions and feedback will be grouped in the survey that will be sent to the Brand Project team and will represent the response/position of the WikiDonne user group to this issue. Thanks and see you soon, - Camelia (talk) 14:02, 18 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to affiliate members to complete a survey about WMF wide Universal Code of Conduct edit

Hello; My name is Mervat, and I am helping the Trust and Safety team to reach out to affiliates in order to discuss the Universal Code of Conduct.

There has been talks about the need for a global set of conduct rules in different communities over time, and finally, Wikimedia Foundation Board announced a Community Culture Statement, enacting new standards to address harassment and promote inclusivity across projects.Since the universal code of conduct that will be a binding minimum set of standards across all Wikimedia projects, will apply to all of us, staff and volunteers alike, all around the globe, and will impact our work as groups, individuals and projects, it’s of great importance that we all participate in expressing our opinions and thoughts about UCoC, its nature, what we think it should cover or include and what it shouldn’t include; how it may develop, drawback or help our groups.   This is the time to talk about it. As you are a valuable contributor to the Wikimedia movement, your voice counts. Before starting to draft the code of conduct, we would like to hear from you; We invite you to devote some minutes to take this survey; your answers will help us create a safer environment for all on Wikimedia:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd36dNdU3C5shXEkKp9itJOhuCTx9hZE5AE-xflkxtfRMnZtg/viewform?usp=pp_url

It’s possible that you are a member of more than one affiliate; hence you may receive this survey more than once, and you may have participated previously in the discussions or filled out a previous survey during the first round of consultations about UCoC which targeted wikipedia/wikimedia communities. We apologize for this; it is really difficult to identify if a wikimedian belongs to multiple groups that work to spread free knowledge. Looking forward to your thoughts and opinions and hoping that you can respond within the next 2 weeks.  If you have any questions about the surveys or difficulties accessing the link, please contact me by email (msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org)Results will be considered during the drafting process for the UCoCThank you for your participation

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group edit

(You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)

Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.

As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.

In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:

Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org.

Best regards,

Your role in AffCom's issues in relation to your Movement Charter Drafting Committee member candidacy edit

Dear Manav! Thank you very much for your candidacy for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee! It is a very responsible role and I appreciate your commitment for if!

As it is so responsible role, I have some questions for you. First of all, a bit of context.

I am in contact with you mostly because of your role of Staff Liaison of Affiliations Committee (AffCom), which relates with my roles of (ex)Chair of some Wikimedia Affiliations. While AffCom have for years reputation of slowresponsedness, it was understanable because of its structure (which, in turn, is understanable because of its high responsibilities) and was rather only a little anoyance, not a big deal. But that have changed (for worse) several months ago and AffCom is still very reluctant to provide more information about it. Several specific cases for ilustration:

  • AffCom put on hold the recognition of User Group Esperanto and Free Knowledge as a Thematic Organisation and informed the UG only reactively (after my question), after unreasonably long time (after the expected deadline for recognition) and provided false information as the reason, even after several messages AffCom haven't reveiled the requested information about the pausing
  • In February 2021, Meta admins defered to AffCom the determination of some specific hard Requests for deletion with intention to implement AffCom's determination; despite you (in your official WMF role) have considered it as a priority concern, Affcom have not provided its determination to Meta admins even after 7 months (as stated by 3 Meta admins - 2 of them confirming publicly: Xaosflux and Camouflaged Mirage (by their alternative account))
  • AffCom was for several months totaly unresponsive about proposed reccomendations to make WUG Wikimedians of Slovakia to obey its User Group Agreement
  • For quite long time AffCom have been requiring (that time not yet a WUG) Wikimedians of Slovakia (WUG WMSVK) to change its legal name to be recognized as a WM User Group, what blocked the recognition for more than year, but suddenly after the recognition agreed to accept Wikimedians of Slovakia's prefered official name which was for long time totaly unaccepted by AffCom
  • Allegedly AffCom informed representatives of WUG WMSVK that it was me who canceled the proposed mediation about WUG WMSVK's long-term bylaws violations (while it is false) and AffCom never ever confirmed to me whether it really provided this false information (to my best Knowledge it was AffCom (or maybe someone who ordered it to AffCom?) who canceled the mediation; but AffCom never clarified it to me even after my explicit request)
  • AffCom is for months in silence about various questions and proposals about WUG WMSVK for whom is AffCom fully responsible since December 2020
  • As AffCom in December 2020 took full responsibility for WUG WMSVK, AffCom is fully reponsible for:
    • WUG WMSVK falsly publicly presents the meeting on March 2019 as a valid Meeting of General Assembly despite it clearly violates WUG WMSVK's bylaw and several WUG WMSVK's board members have alreay stated it, also publicly
    • It is still not clear whether WUG WMSVK's meeting in March 2021 was a valid Meeting of General Assembly, as evidence suggest it is not, despite AffCom beeing repetebly warned in advance about this possibility
    • WMF is publicly hosting documents produced by WUG WMSVK that contain false, defamatory information about myself (en, sk) despite your assurence that WUG WMSVK will rectify them
    • WUG WMSVK is no more publicly presenting its Annual plans despite its tradition of presenting them publicly, and is not presenting publicly its Finantial reports and Annual Budgets despite tradition of publicly presenting such documents and having the capacity to create at least Annual budget since at least 2018. All of these 3 documents are requiered to be prepared every year by WMSVK's Board.

I understand that you personaly are not AffCom and not a voting member. In the same time, I understand that you are paid stuff member whose job is liaisoning for AffCom and are often in contact with at least some affiliations and proposed affiliations. So your responsibility to AffCom is still present, althrou I do not know what is its span.

So, my questions for you are:

  1. Do you personaly consider the AffCom's happenings presented above to be in line with Wikimedia Foundation Guiding Principles (especially Transparency and Accountability)?
    1. If not, have you done already something to rectify AffCom's activity to be in full alignment with them? What have you done?
    2. If yes, please briefly clarify how (in your opinion) they are showing Transparency and Accountability.
  2. What is your role in the AffCom's happenings presented above? (have you supported / encouraged / decided them? or have you tried to prevent them / discourage them? or have you just fully neutraly executed decisions that leaded to them? have you presented objections that the decisions are against Wikimedia Foundation Guiding Principles or similar rules / recomendations / ...? or something else? please be concrete)
  3. As much of the presented cases show AffCom's issues about clear, proactive communication, do you consider yourself to be capable enough to clearly, poactively, helpfully communicate in the high responsibility role of Movement Charter Drafting Committee member?
    1. If it is not you who is the source of AffCom's communication issues, who is?
  4. Do you believe that you will not "import" AffCom-like issues to the Movement Charter Drafting Committe? If yes, on what basis?

I am looking forward for your answers! --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 21:27, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi KuboF Hromoslav, I am glad to see your interest in my candidacy and understand your willingness to have your questions addressed. As I have applied for the drafting committee in a volunteer capacity, please note that I was a member of AffCom from January 2019 to March 2020 and can only speak about my engagement with the committee during that period. All the questions listed here are related to my professional work, I won't be able to respond to any of the above listed questions. I will be glad to take any general questions. Regards-Manavpreet Kaur (talk) 22:25, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Manav, why are you not able to respond to any of the above listed questions? --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 10:07, 25 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Dear Manav! First of all, congratulation for being elected for MCDC! It is a big responsibility!
Second, and related, as you are now in that big responsibility role, it would be much more helpful if you would finally respond the questions that I have asked you in this section. As you haven't answered them before the election, we, the voters, haven't enough information to do a responsible voting decision. As you still haven't answered them, we, the Wikimedia movement, don't know whether we have elected someone that will provide more value to the Committee than take it (e.g. by implanting the same kind of thinking that created the issues in AffCom). And, considering the level of responsibility of the Committee, it is undesirable.
I am specifically asking you about your work activities as a AffCom stuff Liaison. As a WMF stuff you are part of WMF and so have to follow the WMF Guiding Principles. So I am insisting that you honor that and take an account for your work. If you can not respond because of some NDA, please, connect me with your first line supervisor. Thanks! --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 15:26, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi KuboF, Thank you so much for your wishes. I understand your willingness to learn about my competency as a MCDC member, but the above listed questions are related to my professional role with the Affiliations Committee. AffCom is not in any way partner to the Movement Charter Drafting Committee, so the questions are irrelevant. MCDC is in the process of setting up, you might have to wait for some time to see any progress on Charter. I have joined MCDC in a volunteer capacity, so like every other member on the committee, I commit to address all questions related to the work & updates on Charter. I won't be addressing any questions related to my professional engagements. AffCom's Vice-Chair, Mehman addressed your queries in a public post & there were no complaints or concerns shared around me creating any issues in AffCom, so I fail to understand the base and substantiality in your comment. Like all other Wikimedians, I do not have any line supervisor in the movement. I expect you to follow the engagement limits & allow me keep everything apart of my community role out of any discussions especially on a public platform. Thanks-Manavpreet Kaur (talk) 16:38, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@KuboF Hromoslav:, It is not clear to me (at least), what your intention of writing this thread are. Especially after you have already said that:

I understand that you personaly are not AffCom and not a voting member. In the same time, I understand that you are paid stuff member whose job is liaisoning for AffCom and are often in contact with at least some affiliations and proposed affiliations. So your responsibility to AffCom is still present, althrou I do not know what is its span.

You then proceed to launch into questions about her role in what you perceive as inadequacies of Affcom, and how she would "import" such to the MCDC. So far your arguments have set up Manavpreet as a straw man, and you have used her as a slippery slope, to your unfounded argument against Affcom. Surely, if you have grievances against Affcom, you would address them to Affcom? Something you have already done, might I add. So, let me ask again, what outcome do you desire to achieve with this thread? --DNdubane (WMF) (talk) 08:45, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi DNdubane (WMF)! Precisely because I do not know what is Manav's role in AffCom's issues I am asking her and her superordinates. I haven't found any document about how is AffCom governed or what (precisely, beyond simple "staff liaison") are roles and responsibilities of Manav in relation to AffCom. And even more, a lot of stuff in happening beyond the closed door, so I even more can't know what is really happening. In order to not do assumptions (which are often wrong), or at least eliminate them as much as possible, I am asking. It is not setting a strawman, it is a questioning in lack of clear answers from past.
By this thread I hope to help MCDC to work effectively and responsibly. As I have written previously, Manav's role in AffCom's issues is still unclear (for public, like me). So it is unclear if Manav is causing the issues, or is trying to eliminate them, or is neutral to them and just is supporting AffCom while AffCom itself is doing the trouble (in)activities. If Manav's role would be clear it would be much simpler to take a meaningful next steps. When it cames to importing issues from AffCom to MCDC, it is not necesery for Manav herself to be causing the issues in AffCom to import them to MCDC. People are heavily influenced by their surrounding people. It is possible that Manav have absorbed some AffCom's thinking and behavioral patterns and incorporated them. If these patterns are the ones that are causing AffCom's issues, Manav could "import" them to MCDC. As AffCom have issues to responsible working, it is bad enough, but "fortunately" AffCom is dealing "only" with affiliations. But MCDC is dealing about significant fundamental document that is going to steer very significant part of the movement - we really do not need AffCom-like issues there...
I hope that this respond you well and Manav / AffCom / Manav's superordinate will finally respond the questions so we can know.
PS: Yes, I am still working on helping AffCom to solve its issues. But this particular issue have an special urgency and significance because it is about high-responsibility MCDC. So I am working on these issues simultaneously. --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 12:54, 9 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Your response would make sense, if you were a community member who did not/does not have an active case being handled by Affcom. Then I would believe that your enquiry is an innocent attempt to understand Manav's bonafides. However, you have conceded that you have referred issues to Affcom, and it looks like you did not get the outcome you wanted. Surely that biases you view about Manav and Affcom. Would you not agree? --DNdubane (WMF) (talk) 11:11, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Dear DNdubane (WMF), it is nice that you take care of my biases. I suggest you to destroy them by providing truthful answer to my questions (presented in bold at the beginning of this thread). If you do not want to destroy my biases, it is ok, you do not need to - just please transparently and truthfully answer the questions. If you refuse to transparently provide truthful answer, please explicitly state it here. Thanks! --KuboF Hromoslav (talk) 17:39, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@KuboF Hromoslav, I think we are making progress! My only intention in responding to this thread was to make you aware of your biases, and how they affect your reception to any responses provided here. I think my analysis of the issues here still stands.
1. Manav has provided adequate response to your questions about her involvement with Affcom.
2. Affcom have responded to your concerns about how they have treated the case you refer to, in direct communication with yourself and the involved parties, as well as in a public forum here on meta.
3. This tread is a slippery slope argument that tries to connect issues that are not related to each other.
But, if anything, I am glad you are aware of your own bias and underlying motivations in posting this thread on Manav's talk page. --DNdubane (WMF) (talk) 06:24, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

WWC2023 pages and translation edit

Hello, Dr. Manavpreet Kaur, I am very excited to read WWC2023/Background and thank you for your input. So enlightened and filled with respect reading the Background.

May a translator suggest a tip from how translation speeds up on meta Wikimedia? Of course, I understand writing and preparing those paragraphs translatable are in different pockets side-by-side.

I wish the page be read by those we welcome to stand up and talk at #WikiWomenCamp2023. Those unheard voices we are missing. Then, as we are inviting, do we need them read English?

My wish. Paragraphs segmented into smaller chunks for this variable page. Practically, putting extra *translate* tags in longer paragraphs.

  • Cons: By that action,three/four languages will suffer update pings, as they have finished translating tasks.
  • Pro: We can avoid it happen if we request technical assistance by volunteers, who can re-arrange the ready translation into new segments. Not many I communicate with who are in the know, but user:Pols12 understands this kind of request very much.

At the end of the day, shorter translation batches are much energy efficient for translators like me. (: And more people will jump in to put your words into their local tongues, isn’t it a win-win?

FYI, the beauty of shorter/crispier translation segment is, that our translation database offers on the side window “could-be translation”: very helpful for un-biased translation output, and recycling similar phrases is good for consistency, too.

Small example and my background.

Like my peers preparing a user group on Wikimedia-Japanese language, they easily give up perceiving precious input like yours, as long as it is not offered in native Japanese. Too sad a fact, but a nation with almost 100% of its female aged 15 are schooled does not offer good English classes for interlanguage communication I am afraid. We are eager to learn about how our global peers think and act diversifying our Wikiverse.

Good to know WikiWomenCamp2023 takes place at the land of diversity, India. I wish to support WEC and continue offering as a translator. With best, --Omotecho (talk) 00:15, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
