Wiki Loves Africa edit

Bonsoir

On lance aujourd'hui !

--Bachounda (talk) 21:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bon.

Anthere (talk)

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #2—2015 edit

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the April's issue of the VisualEditor monthly newsletter, which will be widely delivered towards the end of next week. The previous bulletin was published in 26 languages—the translation was completed only for ten of them. Will we do better this month? We'd like to reach many more communities in their own language this time, as VE recently became the main editor at other 50+ Wikipedias, and we're announcing interesting developments (auto-fill features for citations, improved special character inserter, drag and drop for categories, invisible templates now marked by a puzzle piece icon, and more). Thanks a lot for your help! Elitre (WMF) 22:38, 4 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. If you need further help or would like to change the page where you're notified of future translations, please contact me directly.

Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon edit

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

Thanks for your attention, and happy translating! Elitre (WMF) 02:59, 11 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

  1. You can choose between any short-sleeve shirt, or other items for the same value.
  2. This means both new translations, and updates for messages in the "Outdated" tab of the translation interface.

Translation notification: Community Capacity Development edit

Hello Bachounda,

You are receiving this notification because you signed up as a translator to العربية on Meta. The page Community Capacity Development is available for translation. You can translate it here:

The Wikimedia Foundation is beginning a new initiative called Community Capacity Development. In it, we have conducted some research about community capacities, and documented what we've learned in these pages we are now inviting you to consider translating.

We hope these pages can serve as a basis for very concrete conversation between WMF and specific communities about possible projects to build specific capacities in interested communities. The work is to be based on interest and mutual agreement, not on top-down dictates from WMF. That's why it's important these documents -- this page and the six sub-pages mentioned in the navigation bar at its top -- reach the different communities in their own language.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and please let me know if anything is unclear.

  • en.wiki gets the newsletter earlier, because that's not translated into other languages. If you want to receive the newsletter on en.wiki, please suscribe to Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Newsletter instead;

Hi everyone,

thank you for your work on translations for the Wikimedia movement.

Today I'm requesting translation of the page Free Bassel, which is to be the landing page linked from a CentralNotice banner campaign informing our readers about the dire situation of Bassel Khartabil, a fellow Wikipedia volunteer and open source software developer who might be facing death penalty imposed by the Syrian government.

Please kindly take some time to translate the page; I set 30 November as the deadline for the translation, but really do hope the page might be translated earlier than that, as Bassel's situation really is of the utmost urgency.

There is also the text of the banner waiting to be translated at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Banner:Free_Bassel> -- and again, Arabic, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German are languages of top priority for us at the moment given their usage by the United Nations and their popularity in the world.

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and user groups – is looking for new members!

The main role of the Affiliations Committee is to guide groups of volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and advise the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees on issues connected to chapters, thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.

The committee consists of twelve members, six of whom are selected every twelve months for staggered two-year terms.

Key skills

Being a part of the Affiliations Committee requires communication with volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to understand legal texts. We try to get a healthy mix of different skill sets in our members. The key skills and experience that we look for in candidates are:

  • Excitement by the challenge of helping to empower groups of volunteers worldwide.
  • Willingness to process applications through a set, perhaps bureaucratic process.
  • Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future of affiliates, models of affiliations, and similar questions.
  • Availability of up to 5 hours per week, and the time to participate in a monthly ~2 hour voice/video meeting.
  • International orientation.
  • Very good communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work and communicate with other languages and cultures.
  • Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the WMF.
  • Knowledge of different legal systems and experience in community building and organising are a plus.
  • Effective communication skills in other languages are a major plus.
  • Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus.
  • Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.

We are looking for people who are not afraid of the workload and are motivated by helping other volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission around the world.

Selection process

As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2015 member selection process will include a public review and comment period. All applications received by the committee will be posted on Meta (at Affiliations Committee/Candidates/2015), and the community will be invited to provide comments and feedback about each candidate.

At the end of the public comment period, the applications will be voted on by the members of the committee who are not seeking re-election, taking into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisors, WMF staff and board liaisons, and the community. A final decision will be made by mid-January 2016, with new members expected to join later that month.

How to apply

If you are interested in joining the committee, please send an application to affcom@lists.wikimedia.org by 31 December 2015. You will get a confirmation that your application was received.

Your application should include the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your contact information (including e-mail address and username)
  • A statement describing your relevant experience, skills, and motivation for joining the committee.

Your statement will be published for community review and feedback, so please do not include any information that you are not comfortable sharing.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me and/or the committee as a whole. We are happy to chat or have a phone call with anyone about our work if this helps them decide to apply. Please distribute this call among your networks, and do apply if you are interested!

Best regards,
Carlos Colina

Hey translators, please see review and translate what you are able for this important consultation regarding Wikimania. Because part of the consultation is aimed at fundamentally changing how Wikimania is planned (even considering the possibility of making multiple events regional throughout the year rather than one global event), it's important that folks understand the options on the table. I've tried to prioritize only the most important parts of the consultation for translation, but if you want to translate more, please feel free to add translation tags and get in touch with me if you need me to reconfirm the page for translation. Please also see the discussion page, as we are requesting translations of the small number of survey questions. With thanks, User:I JethroBT (WMF).

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the last issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter for 2015, which will be widely delivered on Thursday (end of the day in Europe). PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. - This is the part of a series of community consultation pages. The WMF Community Advocacy team has put together a list at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Strategy/Translations. We're hoping to launch the consultation on January 18th. Realizing getting all translations in place before the launch of the consultation may not be possible (and that people will likely help with translations after the launch), I'd be really grateful for any assistance especially that you can give in translating the templates at that Meta page link, like this one. It'll probably be harder for casual translators to help out with those!

- Text should be stable at this point. I've just made what I hope will be the last modification to those pages!

- Thank you for all you do, and I hope you will not only assist in translation (if you are able) but also take part in the consultation. Your input will be very welcome.

- Questions or concerns? Please let me know at mdennis@wikimedia.org. Thanks! Maggie

Hi translators, this is Jethro. The page here describes the outcomes of a recent consultation on Wikimania and movement conferences, for which the WMF will be publicizing on 8 Feburary. There are many very important changes coming for Wikimania beginning in 2018, and it's important that contributors from as many language backgrounds as possible are aware of them. In my judgment, it will be most important to translate the sections labeled "Summary," and "Next steps" be prioritized, but any translation you can provide for the more specific details on the page will be appreciated. Inspire Campaign on content curation & review edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Hello !

BMJ account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library) edit

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for BMJ through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your BMJ access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the BMJ signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in a few weeks; if you request renewal after then we should still be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:16, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018 edit

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

The candidate for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is asking you to support his candidacy! edit

Hi Bachounda,
I ask you and your local organization to consider my candidacy for the candidates for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. I myself put forward my candidacy for this election. I ask you to support my candidacy, as I have a strategic vision of the next. Each of the foreign language sections of the Wikimedia Foundation project must receive the widest support. This will ensure an increase in the content of your linguistic local of the Wikimedia Foundation projects. Other linguistic local communities of the World can count on the same support. Also, I believe that all foreign language sections of the Wikimedia Foundation projects that are less powerful than English speakers should have the same chance for the rapid growth of their local projects.
In case you and your local organization support my candidacy. Then, I ask you to write this in my profile of the candidate for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. You can write this in the "Endorsements" section of my candidate profile.
Thank you for your attention!

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October! edit

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the Months of African Cinema last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000. About 9 in-person events were also organised for the edit-a-thon in different parts of the world.

The contest is organized by a Wikimedia project called The AfroCine Project, which is dedicated to improving the coverage of the history, works, people, places, and events, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

If you would love to join this exciting event, please list your username as a participant on the English Wikipedia contest page. If you would love to lead this contest for your country or community, please list your name in the coordinators' page here. The rapid grants team would be accepting proposals throughout October and November, in case you'd need funds to run local edit-a-thons or some other activities related to this event. Upon listing your name on the coordinators' page, you'd be contacted to talk about the resources you'd need to run the event in your community. You can also contact me directly for any clarifications.

Finally, We also need volunteers to handle some aspects of the AfroCine project. These aspects include:

  1. Community Liaison: This role essentially involves closely engaging with local communities to support their activities within the scope of Afrocine.
  2. Communications: This involves the communications aspects of the project. Sharing relevant information on mailing lists and social media would be the responsibility of this person.
  3. MAC Jury: This role involves joining the jury of Months of African Cinema contest. We need as many people as we can get 🙂.
  4. Tools: Going forward, we would need relevant tools to better track the metrics and also analyse the general impact of these events. We are calling for Wikimedia volunteers who can navigate wikimedia tools that can be useful for the project.

If you would love to help with any of these roles, or some other roles that have not been mentioned, please contact me directly or on: samoye_ hotmail.com

If you have further questions, complaints, suggestions, etc., please reach out to me personally or right here or the project talkpages.

Thank you!--Jamie Tubers (talk) 17:10, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sunday August 23: Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting edit

Strategic flock of Wikimedians heading in a new direction.

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a proposed forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas on the Wikimedia 2030 strategy process. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for a future Global Council.

The idea is to follow up on the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting and other strategic and outreach topics of mutual concern to all affiliates, and you are all invited to RSVP here.--Pharos (talk) 15:47, 21 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
