Notifications and the Ukrainian Wikipedia
editGreetings Ата,
Notifications, also known as Echo, is tentatively scheduled to be deployed to the Ukrainian Wikipedia on 17 September. I was wondering if you would be interested in helping to translate and plan for the release there? This mainly involves translating and localizing the FAQ so the help icon refers users to a local document and pre-announcing the release. Let me know what you think! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 23:03, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, again. Wikis are becoming facebooky, as Savh said, and I don't like it. But, of course, I will translate what is needed to be translated (please, just point me the pages) though I'm not going to advocate Notifications. -- Ата (talk) 09:16, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for the translation. The help page is the most important for translating. I can understand your concern about it appearing facebooky, I had the same thought when it appeared on the English Wikipedia. I've actually grown to like notifications. I am a very quiet editor, I do not follow many pages, so it is actually very convenient to be notified when a conversation that I am involved in is updated or if there is something else that someone thought would interest me. The added email options are pretty convenient too. You might even end up liking it :). If not, Notifications has the benefit of being able to turn almost all of the features off. This is a good thing. All of this is said as a long-time Wikipedian, not a Foundation contractor. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 15:47, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have just noticed that I didn't actually finish translating the help page at the time of request. My apologies; I assume I was distracted with some other translation at hand. I've grown to like Notifications myself since then and perceive them as essential part of wiki life we couldn't possibly omit. -- Ата (talk) 16:38, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

IRC cloak request
editHello Ата. You recently applied for a Wikimedia IRC cloak, but it looks like you forgot to register your nickname first. Could you please log on to IRC and do:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>
where <password> is a password of your choice and <email> is your e-mail address? After you do that, please follow the instructions that are e-mailed to you to confirm your e-mail address. When you're done with that, I just need you to confirm your cloak request:
/msg MemoServ send wmfgc IRC cloak request
After you finish all of that, I'd be happy to get you a cloak. :-) If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my Meta talk page. Barras talk 09:28, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot, I've completed the above steps now :) -- Ата (talk) 10:11, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- Barras, I have a question. 'wikimedia/Ata' in cloak is a bit confusing, because user:Ata also exists. Can somethins be done to point on Ата instead of Ata? No troubles appeared by now, I'm just wondering . Sorry for my ignorance -- Ата (talk) 14:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
- Well, since Ata has no global account, I see no point in changing the cloak now. The unattached local accounts seem inactive for years, so there should be no problems with that. -Barras talk 15:05, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Grammar

Broken list on the Participation:Support page
editHi, Ata! Thanks a lot for your work on the Participation:Support page. It seems the list under "Next Steps" is a bit broken as a result of the translation markers; do you think you could help us with fixing it? (I don't want to mess up the translation markers now that you've put them in.) Cheers, Winifred Olliff (Grants Administrator) talk 17:45, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you, Winifred. I didn't notice broken lists while tagging this page. Base helped me to correct error, looks like everything is ok now. -- Ата (talk) 06:36, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- Awesome! Thanks a lot for taking a look at it and fixing it so quickly. We appreciate all of your great work on this page. Cheers, Winifred Olliff (Grants Administrator) talk 19:36, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Translation markup changes on Data retention guidelines
editHey Ата,
I wanted to let you know I undid this edit and explain why/make sure we fixed any issues. It appeared from the edit summary your main goal was to change ==<translate>Headers<translate>== to <translate>==Headers==<translate> . I'm not completely sure I understand why that would be better ( it seems better for the translators to have to deal with as little of the wikitext as possible, just having to translate the words themselves) but I'm certainly open for argument on it and probably would have left it. The reason I undid was because I realized a bunch of the translate tags were removed from elsewhere too and we were left with a couple very large translation blocks. Again, obviously happy to talk about if what you were doing was better for the translators since that's obviously the goal :). Jalexander--WMF 06:31, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Jalexander,
- The point is that it is better for translators to know that they are dealing with the header. This is strongly recommended in docs on mediawiki-wiki. There are also many other useful trifles in docs of Translate extension and few English-speakers has ever read them, lol ('cause those who translate them had to read for sure). -- Ата (talk) 19:26, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- To be fair when I first started using the extension those docs did not exist ;) I had to learn most of it from scratch or occasionally talking to Nike/Siebrand. I didn't see any reason to go back when I didn't run into any other issues :) On quick glance I don't agree with all of it... but I don't need to :) If the header thing helps more then having to avoid the wiki text that that's fine, I'm happy to adjust that. To be totally honest I tend to over markup simply because I've had the extension not do what I expected (even with the docs) so often that I like to be 'very clear' what I want it to do ;) Jalexander--WMF 20:48, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- Huh, I see. Nike and Siebrand created that doc pages in 2009 and I was lucky to have a chance reading. Hope, you're not angry with me about my saying. By the way, if you're experienced with extension, maybe you know something worth adding on help pages? As for the Data retention guidelines I will not make anything else on that page but be ready that someone else can take "== ==" back into translation units :) -- Ата (talk) 22:05, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- I already did, thanks :). I never have any issues with someone correcting me or calling me out if they think I'm wrong, I may not always agree but that's always the case and just because I disagree doesn't mean I'm right. Please don't feel like you can't correct something if you think it needs to be either directly or by reaching out. That's what the Bold Revert Discuss cycle is for. I'll definitely take a look through the documentation and see if I can add anything (especially with some examples or screen shots). I was mostly just surprised because I've never had anyone call me out for the way I did the headers before ;). I fully know that my attitude towards a lot of work is 'make it work' and so sometimes I end up with odd norms ;) which is why it's always good to hear from the people who are using it 'the right way' or even just came up with different odd norms :). Jalexander--WMF 22:28, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal
editHi Ата,
I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.
As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!
P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Please test the new feature Special:PageMigration
editAs a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.
An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.
Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.
Looking forward to hearing from you! Cheers. BPositive (talk) 14:33, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Ата, I have just noticed that you've been working on the translation of Tech News this weekend.
I wanted to ask you to consider refraining from translating such pages to avoid supporting the recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation. On Sunday, they have implemented a change that gives them an unprecedented, unilateral and unlimited power to protect certain pages on Wikimedia wikis in a manner that makes it impossible for all volunteers — including locally elected administrators — to edit them.
The change was secretly forced through without any community consultation, and the Foundation have used this new feature to actively fight the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.
Your volunteer translations directly sustain such actions of the Foundation. Your work helps them save time and effort that they would otherwise have to invest in recruiting, training and managing new employees, and saves them money they would otherwise have to spend on professional translations.
The recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation make it very clear that they no longer respect the wishes of the volunteer community, and that they no longer consider us an equal partner. The least we can do to voice our dismay at those actions, and to support our colleagues on the German Wikipedia, is to stop investing our precious time as volunteers on directly helping the Wikimedia Foundation. We can instead translate pages which help all wiki users.
Please take a minute to consider withdrawing your help for the Foundation in protest against their disrespectful treatment of the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.
Thank you for your time and your consideration! odder (talk) 22:13, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
- I see you're very concerned about the situation, odder. I already know about all this from translators-l and agree. Thank you for the message. -- Ата (talk) 08:30, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Ата: I am very concerned about this situation, and very disappointed that it happened in the first place. Disappointment is definitely the overwhelming feeling that I associate with all that has happened. But I also think that change comes through action, and I am glad that you agree with me. I am very, very grateful for everything that you have done for Tech News — I have been watching you translate it for months now — and your support and understanding mean a very great deal to me. odder (talk) 08:39, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #9—2014
editHi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the November's issue of the VisualEditor monthly newsletter, which will be widely delivered later this week. The previous bulletin was published in 10 languages, but the translation was completed only for three of them. Will we do better this month? We'd like to reach many more communities in their own language this time, as we're announcing interesting developments like the new ability to add tables and their elements. Thanks a lot for your help! Elitre (WMF) 21:28, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. If you need further help or would like to receive a talk page message to be notified of future translations, please contact me directly.

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #1—2015
editHi! Apologies if you're reading this message more than once. This is an invitation to join translators working on the February's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter. This time it features an important announcement about a series of meetings where VE tasks on Phabricator will be triaged live and publicly, starting next week. Since we want many people to be aware of this ASAP (especially volunteer developers!), we have a time constraint which means we'll deliver to the wikis on Thursday morning PST this week. Thanks a lot in advance, we know you'll do whatever it takes to keep your community up-to-date, and appreciate it a lot. m:User:Elitre (WMF), 22:08, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

--Piramidion 04:40, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon
editHello!
You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.
In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]
If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.
Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.
You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.
Thanks for your attention, and happy translating! Elitre (WMF) 02:59, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!

If you're looking for a new opportunity to translate VE-related content, please join translators working on the August's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter, which will be widely delivered at the end of this workweek. Among other things, this month it features the names of the top contributors for the Translathon ;) Again, thanks a lot for your help, and it was great meeting you in Mexico City! —Elitre (WMF) and Trizek (WMF), 15:33, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

We only use it to notify them of translation opportunities, to make sure they don't miss Translathons, etc. If you would like messages like this one to be delivered on your talk page at a different WMF project, need any help with translations related to VisualEditor or would like to remove your name from that list, please contact Elitre directly.

Ready for translation: VisualEditor News #5—2015
editHi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the October's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter, which will be widely delivered at the end of this workweek. Thanks a lot for your support, as usual! Elitre (WMF), 18:00, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones.
- PPS: We are maintaining a list of editors who have worked on VE-related content (such as newsletters). We only use it to notify them of translation opportunities, to make sure they don't miss Translathons, etc. If you would like messages like this one to be delivered on your talk page at a different WMF project, need any help with translations related to VisualEditor or would like to remove your name from that list, please contact me directly.
Tech News
editAs the year, at least according to the calendar used by Tech News, is drawing to end, I wanted to say thanks for the Tech News translations – both as a person writing Tech News and a Wikimedia editor who cares about the movement. It’s difficult enough to keep track of what’s happening if one speaks English. I’m happy there’s one place to get a weekly update of what’s happening if one doesn’t. The one true international language is translation. Thank you. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 13:40, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review
editI've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.
All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

CEE Reminder
editHi Ata,
In order to give you more info about the Czech round of CEE Spring, see this analysis:
But before that we need to ask you several questions:
- Did you create a local project page for the contest in your wiki? Please, be sure to link it with Q22342981.
- Yes, the page exists, and it will be linked.
- Please briefly describe your local rules on Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Local rules.
- Sure, will be done. Our rules are almost finished; we only need to get some info from Wikimedia Slovakia before we can go. The rules were reviewed by our legal office.
- There is a proposed timeline of thematic weeks about countries: use it! See Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Timeline.
- No, we will have our own approach to the contest. It will have 3 special rounds, first two will take place from 21st March to 31st May, the third one from 1st May to 30th June.
- Did you create a template {{CEE Spring 2016}} and make sure that participants will put it on the articles talk pages?
- Ugh no, what we will use is the education extension. This worked superb last year. Now the question is if you need it on the international level.
- Please have it similar to this example: uk:Template:CEE Spring 2016 for the purpose of gathering statistics.
- Its code is somewhat generic. It might be that your wiki already has templates which cover its parts, or you would not need some parts like gender selection in case your language does not have genders. Some parts, like category names, are worded a weird way on purpose just to show that in languages which have grammar cases you can avoid conjugation (which will require something like #switch parser function) and just use the nominative case.
- {{CEE Spring 2016}} template requires to create some ~30 hidden categories. Is your wiki ok with that?
- As the contest is held simultaneously in many Wikipedias, it is vital that all articles, contest templates and categories are linked with Wikidata. Don't forget about this :)
- The existing ones are done. I made two tables for the Meta Structure page, but the rest has to be done this weekend.
- One last question: What time zone do you use for defining contest beginning and ending? Please write here.
- UTC+1. --Aktron (talk) 18:07, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Please let us know if you need help with anything! Any questions leave here.
- Right now not, I only have couple of things I need to arrange still (ie. obtain the prizes, prepare press release, FB events and finish the posters and graphics). However, the weekend is a great opportunity for that. On 21st March there will be a community meeting and the contest will be also communicated to our community. Centralnotice also will be (hopefully) arranged. --Aktron (talk) 18:07, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Best regards from international organizers,
-- Ата via MassMessage 18. 3. 2016, 17:02 (CET)
- Aktron, will there, in education extension, be the information on what topic and what country the article is about? --Base (talk) 18:39, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
- Base, Well, I have not overseen your question. But I understand we are a bit tense recently due to the deadline that was very clear. I mean no, there is no information like that in the extension. Is it important to have it? I would like to help, but on the other hand I do not want to harass our users and contestants with more requirements and obstacles. All the data can be eventually reconstructed from the contributions individually. We will have csv and xls data about the contributions in the end. --Aktron (talk) 21:33, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Aktron, well the problem is that this kind of data is very difficult (and for a bot impossible) to get afterwards (especially if people write about something not from pre-prepared lists). We have global metric which is about homogeneousness of countries coverage, and it would also be nice to have statistics on how were different topics covered. Even if it's not needed for local competition and is not included into global metrics defined in the grant it is still very interesting and I dare say useful to know. I hope that the Education Extension has some API (haven't checked yet) so that at least basic article listing could be done from it so that I will add it to general list I prepare, but there's definitely no way I can get the country and topic data unless they are somehow manually provided (in case of templates it's done with template parameters specific for this). I am not experienced with the extension, but I really hope that you can think on some way participants can point that kind of stuff in the courses. Thanks in advance, --Base (talk) 22:17, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Yep, the article listing will be done and we will have data about who contributed, how many bytes and which articles. Given the fact that last year we had 388 articles from the contest (712 kB), it is reasonable to assume that the specific countries can be added later on possibly by me (manually) so you can evaluate the data. --Aktron (talk) 22:59, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Aktron, Hmm, well if you are not afraid of that task (manually determining country and topic for ~400 articles does sound a big deal to me) and actually are going to do it, ultimately that is fine, thanks really. Though, perhaps you will rethink and put the burden on participants themselves after all somehow :) --Base (talk) 23:49, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Now remember that the determination will be done in an output sheet, I mean, yeah, it won't be simple, but better than harassing our volunteers and participants. And still, we are thinking perhaps too big. So far 2 articles were writen only for CEE Spring on Czech Wikipedia :-) But the automatic czecho-slovak translator works since today, so we might get much more stuff soon. --Aktron (talk) 00:11, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your participation in IdeaLab during the Inspire Campaign focused on improving content curation & review processes from February to March 2016. I'm interested in hearing your feedback about your participation during campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.
Immediate results of the campaign can be found here. Please feel free to review them and let me know if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:31, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Hi Ата, I will need some help with this Challenge page. Templates for language bar and for participants are not simple copy/paste templates to use, and I am not able to create them. - Hi! I see, Glavkos put the table of participants in place. If the page is now stable I can prepare it for translation (it is important to make everything you want with the text before this because additional tags will appear in wikitext). I'll help --Ата (talk) 11:43, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, in the meantime, I received help from user Glavkos. I want to check the text one more time, and I hope tomorrow will be ready the stable version. I will write to you tomorrow when the text will be checked. Thank you for your help. Regards -- Violetova (talk) 12:42, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi Ата, the page is ready. User:I JethroBT (WMF) started the language bar, and he said he needs a help. Can you jump in, please? I am helping also, but I am not sure what else to do. Regards, --Violetova (talk) 18:29, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your help. I just need one more thing: How can I add more languages in language bar? For example, I'll need Bulgarian, Greek, or latter maybe some other language if there is need? Regards, --Violetova (talk) 06:51, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- There is a "Translate this page" button upon the language bar. One can translate the page to any language and new translations will appear in the bar no matter what languages are predefined as important for translation. --Ата (talk) 07:41, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you Ata, but the button `translate this page` is not working properly as I can see. --Violetova (talk) 10:11, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Cee spring survey
editHi Ata. Since the international organizers did not made public the intention to have a survey, we already asked the Romanian participants to fill out our own survey. editWarm greetings from Urdu Wikipedia!
It was a pleasure for us when one of you translated the interviewed profile of an Urdu Wikipedian.
Similarly, it was our pleasure in translating Vira's blogpost on Wiki Loves Earth 2015.
We hope that these initial steps will help us in our quest for knowing and understanding each others' cultures better.
In line with our previous exchange of emails, I've drafted a tentative collaboration project page in my sandbox: User:Hindustanilanguage/sandbox.
Please note that everything here is tentative and will be based on our mutual agreement. Hence I invite you to make any alteration / modification of the text in my sandbox or post a message to this effect on my talk page.
I look forward for a friendly and mutually beneficial association with the people of Ukraine. I hope that Wikipedia will serve as a channel for better understanding of each others' culture, although it swears by its NPOV policy.
Best and warm regards, --Muzammil (talk) 08:36, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

CEESpring Survey
editHi Ата,
There were/are some issues with CEE Spring Survey for Albanian Community, title was broken (which I fixed in all talk pages), second the survey offer an option for Albanian ("shqip"), but when you enter there is nothing, a message say "Thank you for completing the survey". Who had to translate into Albanian, and was informed any of a local organizers to do it? (we were asket to translate only message.
Anyway, for the moment it is better to remove the option for Albanian, because you will get only empty input from participants who choose Albanian. Thank you.--Liridon (talk) 10:53, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- Liridon, thank you for fixing message title (sad error) and for pointing on this trouble with Shqip translation. It exists, but there was a mistake in survey flow that didn't not show it. Take a look now at the surbey, it should work now properly. --Ата (talk) 13:25, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Training modules: Can you help us with translation?
editHello Ата, hope all is well! As you may know, we at the Wikimedia Foundation's Support and Safety team are developing new training materials to help contributors deal with online harassment situations, and with problems at real life events. The final English version is now finished!
I'm wondering if you would be willing to help us translate content for these Training Modules into your language. We are targeting a minimum of ten languages for these modules, including the English original.
If the answer is yes, please let me know with a ping, or just get stuck in - either way, we would really appreciate your support! Joe Sutherland (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 18:09, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos
editHello,
I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.
There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.
You can find more information in the final report for the grant.
I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.
On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.
Regards,

editHi Ата,
I am reaching out to you because you signed up to receive updates about the Global Wikimedia survey.[1]
We will be hosting a public event online to present the data, a few examples on how teams will be using it for annual planning, and what are next steps for this project. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 10, at 9:00 am PST (1600 UTC), and the presentation will be in English. You can watch the livestream here, and ask question via IRC on #wikimedia-office.
If you are unable attend, you can also find the report on meta, and watch the recording of the event at a later time.
We hope to have you join us online! -- María Cruz 23:28, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
Wikipedia Asian Month 2017 officially starts!
editDear WAM organizer,
I’m Erick Guan, the coordinator of WAM 2017. Welcome to Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. Here is some information about organizations of events at a national level.
Timeline
editThe event lasts a month for the participants. As of the beginning of the event, please:
- Invite previous participants to join. We have a template you may want to use.
- Setup your WAM page in your local wikiproject if you haven’t done that.
- Link your WAM page at Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. It’s important for others to understand and connect to your community! Remove the X when you done that. WAM is organized at national level. So I have to ask you to put your country in front of your name if you haven’t done that.
- Publish a notification about WAM in site notice as well as village pump. Go public!
- Connect with us. Generally send me an email so that we can reach you for future information!
- Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
- Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.
In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!
Interesting articles
editHave some interesting articles in your mind or from community? Drop us a line so that we can exchange the information to other communities.

Ready for translation: Editing News #1—2018
editHi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the upcoming issue of the multilingual newsletter for the visual editor, which will be widely delivered when it's end of Friday in Central Europe. Thanks in advance for your help with this: getting to interact with fellows so skilled like the translators are is among my favorite things about my job :) Best, Elitre (WMF) 10:29, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
- PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. Please let us know about difficulties you experience with the translation memory system.

Community Engagement Insights Translations
editThank you very much for you help, and congratulations for finishing the translation first! :) Trizek (WMF) (talk) 17:33, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- Trizek, could you please send me translated survey as a single document? It will be easier to look for possible typos this way. -- Ата (talk) 19:15, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
- Ата, do you want only the questions you have translated, or all questions including the ones from last year that didn't needed translations from last year?
- You can obtain the first by exporting the translations you have made, and merging them into a single document.
- For the second, you have the spreadsheet Edward just updated on the project page. That document contains all questions, except the one you've translated this year.

editHello, thank you for taking care of assigning pages for translation, and may I ask you to tag another one for translation at Grants:Simple/About? The Community Wishlist Survey
editHi,
You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.
You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support
editHello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.
A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.
While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

The Research team could use your help
editHello. You are receiving this message because of your recent activity in the Translations namespace.
The Wikimedia Research team is developing a new algorithm that automatically recommends sections for editors to add to articles. Translations have already occurred for some of the few languages that we are testing in, except for Spanish and Russian. If you have some time in the next few days, please consider translating the short message (only 6 items) we aim to send out soon, in one or both of these languages. (And if you feel like you want to support your tester peers even more, you can do so by taking care of the related instructions page.)
Thank you! Jonathan Morgan & Diego Saez-Trumper, Wikimedia Foundation Research - 18:14, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your help
editHi there, translator! Here's a little token of appreciation for a recent effort you contributed to. Surprised? Well, the best is yet to come.
- We'd love to send you this badge as an actual sticker. If you want, you can use this Google Form to communicate your address so we can ship it to you. Note that we will close the form on October 13, 2019, and all data will be removed shortly afterwards. Details about this external site are provided at the top of the form.
- We also have this badge waiting for you on Wikimedia Space. You can use the form linked above to let us know what your username is on this brand new hub, so that you can get the award there as well. If you don't have an account yet, just go ahead and enjoy joining via Wikimedia login in just a few clicks. (And in case you hadn't heard yet, you can join the community of translators there as well).
Again, thanks for everything you are doing to make this movement a better (and multilingual!) place: please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions, and I hope to hear from you soon. --Elitre (WMF), 13:03, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 needs translations
editHello!
I'm contacting you because you've already translated some messages for the Community Wishlist Survey. We need more translations for the 2020 edition, to create a survey that would serve as many users as we know.
The list below shows our needs by order of importance (most important first):
- The invitation sent to communities. It summarizes the process. We plan to distribute it soon on this year target wikis. The more translations we have, the better!
- The form for non-English speakers. Anyone should be able to add their wish, no matter which language they speak. Translating this short form is very important to encourage diversity and equity.
- The survey itself, where the entire process is described.
- The preload form, that provides more context on existing wishes.
Some languages are already covered (maybe by you), but some messages have been updated, and there is always some room for reviewing and polishing messages.
Thank you in advance for your help! This survey can't be successful without your assistance. :)
WAM2019 welcomes your support!
editHello Ата,
Thank you for joining us as a Wikipedia community organizer. We would appreciate your help to get the central banner localized in your language.
You can visit here and select your language (which language you want the contents to be translated into) and then translate it.
WAM2019 Team thanks you for your support.
Kind regards,
WAM2019 International Team

The upcoming "What's making you happy this week?" email will feature Ukrainian
editHi Ата, User:Clovermoss is planning to send the WMYHTW email for next week, and the plan is for the email title to be in Ukrainian. The email will mention Ukrainian Wikipedia's 1 million article milestone. ↠Pine (✉) 05:37, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- Yay! Thanks, Pine. Anything I can help with? -- Ата (talk) 07:07, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Clovermoss, this week you are the primary author of WMYHTW. Do you have any requests for Ата? Ата has the skills to translate between English and Ukrainian. ↠Pine (✉) 17:31, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Pine and Ата. It's nice to meet you. I don't know much about how this milestone beyond it being reached. Ата, do you have any thoughts on how this has affected the Ukrainian Wikipedia? If there's a banner or a huge celebration of some kind, I'd really appreciate knowing more about it. Clovermoss (talk) 21:11, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- Clovermoss, one millionth article is about Odetta and it was created by a school teacher as a part of WikiGap Challenge. Personally I think that this is a symbol of ukwiki being engaged it global trends of article creation: both good ones (writing about women, writing about activists, writing about topic dear to readers, involving teachers into Wikipedia Education Program) and not so good ones (writing often about western culture more than others etc.). We didn't celebrate yet; there are plans for offline gathering after the quarantine. The milestone is a relief for many, since we perceived 1 mln articles as, I would say, an equivalent to age of majority. But then again, there is a general feeling of not being particularly proud about the quality of all these articles. Since next million milestone is far away, we'll probably be more interested in quality for now; these are my personal reflections. Here is a blog post on the topic in Ukrainian, and a gif with articles number growth with time, in case it helps. -- Ата (talk) 11:46, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, it does help! It feels kind of underwhelming to just say thank you, but I really do appreciate your response. I wouldn't have known any of this without your help. Do you mind if I link to this as part of WMYTW? With your permission, I would probably say something along the lines of: I asked Ата, an active contributor to the Ukrainian Wikipedia, about how this milestone affects the project. Then I'd link to the response here, but only if you're okay with that. Clovermoss (talk) 13:48, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

- Hi Ата, there is a delay in WMYHTW due to Clovermoss having a temporary off-wiki problem. Hopefully this will be resolved in the next few days. ↠Pine (✉) 18:18, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Newsletters for Wikimedia tutorials
editHi Ата,
You may remember that awhile ago I started to develop scripts for video tutorials that would teach people how to edit Wikipedia and the sister projects. Although the scripts are primarily intended for English Wikipedia, I think that much of the content will be adaptable for use on other language editions of Wikipedia and for Commons, and eventually I would like to extend the project to topics for Commons.
I created a project space for the project on the Outreach wiki at outreach:NavWiki. Sometime in April, I will probably send a newsletter with project updates. If you would like to sign up for the newsletter, you can do that here on Meta.
Replacing translated with original content
editHi Ата, it would be nice to get informed if translated content gets overwritten. Thank you, regards --CJackel (WMF) (talk) 17:26, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi CJackel! I've split the translation unit, separating the section title from the consequent paragraph. I immediately then added translation into the newly created unit (which you can see here). Apparently I acted too quick: Translate extension is somewhat famous for having lags and needing dumb edits here and there for translations to be properly assembled from the Translation: namespace parts and be visible in place. Thank you for spotting this! I will remember to check the translated versions extra time in cases like this. -- Ата (talk) 17:45, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
- No worries, I already changed that part. It's strange that your box was not visible. Translation tool is a bit buggy, indeed. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation and of course for updating and caring about the translations! --CJackel (WMF) (talk) 17:49, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

- Deborahjay, thank you for the notification. I went back and updated this page at least three times now. The front page of any project should be more stable than that, especially when it's running. Is it something you can influence? -- Ата (talk) 15:24, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi
editHello, could you explain to me what the following action means? "Registro de tradução de páginas 09h28min Ата discussão contribs adicionado página traduzível Wikimedia Foundation elections/2021/Candidates/Dariusz Jemielniak para grupo agregado Wikimedia Foundation elections 2021 " Thanks, best, --Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 16:03, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Felipe da Fonseca, hi. Page Wikimedia Foundation elections/2021/Candidates/Dariusz Jemielniak belongs to the pages that can be translated. Translatable pages can be grouped into aggregate groups for translation; these groups can be seen on Special:LanguageStats in bold and can be selected on top of Special:Translate. I added the pages that are related to this year elections to the aggregate group "Wikimedia Foundation elections 2021" so that they could be translated one after another, without the need to open another page, here: [3] This action belongs to those that get logged in Special:Log/pagetranslation, this is why you saw it in recent changes/watchlist. Aggregate groups are created and modified on Special:AggregateGroups; there is a short learning pattern on usage of this feature. Ата (talk) 19:36, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- I will need to spend some time investigating this. Thanks for the explanation. Cheers. --Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 19:51, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

A Community Wishlist Survey update waiting for translation
editHello! Would you be able to translate the newest update about the Community Wishlist Survey 2022? In short: instead of November 2021, the CWS will happen in January 2022. We would also like to make other improvements. We can't do that without having the volunteers' opinions. This is what we ask for in the message.

Campaigns Product Update #2
editHello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers! We are excited to share our updates:
- Request for Feedback: We have shared our project principles, wireframes for the desktop version, and open questions for you about the team’s event registration project. See the latest status updates here.
- Wireframes are design tools that imagine the future interface of the software. We haven’t built anything yet. We need your feedback on these designs so that we can make better product decisions. You can give feedback on the talk page regarding the design and features of the wireframes. We would love to hear your comments to help us establish the next necessary steps for the project.
- Presentations: The Campaign Product team participated in WikiArabia 2021 and WikiConference North America 2021 to give a brief introduction on how the team works. Senior Program Strategist Alex Stinson gave an overview about campaigns and how we can scale the organizing experience within the Movement. Senior Product Manager Ilana Fried gave an introduction about the Product Team and the project wireframes of the first campaign software solution: the on-wiki registration tool. View the recorded presentation here.
- Team update: We have hired our first team engineer, JCarvalho and our campaign organizing fellow, IBrazal. Newsletter updates will be done by IBrazal and she will be coordinating with you! We hope to have the rest of the engineering team onboard soon! For those of who missed the last Campaign Office Hour, you may watch the recording to know more about the Campaign Product Team.
What is next?
- Testers Needed! We will be partnering with YUX, a design research agency, to learn how our team can improve the experience of Wikimedia campaign organizers and participants in Africa. For this reason, we are looking for community members who are willing to be part of the rapid testing sessions. Preferably, we want organizers and editors who have worked in an African context. If you would like to participate in testing, please email ibrazal-ctr wikimedia org.
- Upcoming Conferences. Wiki Indaba 2021. This year, the conference will be held virtually on November 5-7, 2021 with the theme "Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future". Read more about the conference here or register to join the event. We will be presenting the registration features on Sunday November 7.
- We will also be attending Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021, which will be held virtually again this year on November 5-7, 2021. We will be presenting the registration tool on November 6 as part of our communication and sharing process.
- Translation Support. We are also beginning to translate the updates on Registration. If you think your language community would benefit from updates, please translate here.

Anchor within translate tag
editThanks for Special:Diff/22547793! I was careful to make sure this didn't introduce a new i18n message. I'm guessing it still did show up? I ask because following your edit, I see the the page doesn't have any changes that need to be marked for translation, as if no changes were made at all to the messages. Regardless, thank you :) MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:59, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
- MusikAnimal, you added an anchor within the translate tags, so after you marked the revision for translation it did show up as a new unit. I have recently finished translating the page so I noticed when a new unit popped up, edited source page, and marked my version for translation. (Interestingly, history doesn't show it, but my marking it is logged and you can see that FuzzyBot made its changes, too.) Absolutely no problem, I'm glad I helped 🙂 Ата (talk) 17:13, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Community Wishlist Survey
editThank you for all translations! I'd also like to ask you to promote the Community Wishlist Survey in your community. As you know, there is a visual for social media, there are hashtags. It's really important for us to make sure your community could take part in the Survey.
Again, thank you for everything you do! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 15:42, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Campaigns Product Update #3
editHello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!
We are excited to share our updates:
- Proposal to create new namespaces: We have proposed to create two namespaces, which are “Event” and “Event talk.” This way, we can easily create an Event Center that pulls data from event pages. This Event Center may include tools to create event pages with registration support, a calendar of events, and event statistics, among other features. More importantly, the Event Center will highlight organizing as an essential part of the Wikimedia movement. Please give us feedback on Phabricator or Meta about our proposal to create two new namespaces.
- Engineering updates: We are excited that we have finished hiring for our engineering team! Three engineers and an engineering manager have joined our team since our last update. In the last few months, they have conducted technical planning and launched the building phase of the project. They are now building the registration tool. You can see the updated team on meta.
- Design updates: We conducted usability tests with a small group of testers for early feedback on the desktop wireframes. After collecting this feedback, we have developed a new version for desktop wireframes, which will be ready to share in the next few weeks. These desktop wireframes display the user flow of two experiences: one for organizers who want to add registration to their event pages, and another for participants who want to register for an event. Additionally, the design team is also currently working on the first version of mobile wireframes, which will be shared during the next office hour.
- 1. View the latest desktop wireframes in Figma for Campaign Organizer Prototype and Participant Registration Prototype.
- 2. Leave us some feedback on the desktop wireframes. Note that we haven’t posted the newest version of the desktop wireframes on the project page yet, but we will soon (and you can feel free to add feedback on any version you have seen).
- Ambassador updates: Three product ambassadors for the Arabic, French and Swahili communities have now joined our team! They will help us collect feedback from Wikimedia communities about the project and understand the needs of organizers, through gathering first-hand information. These ambassadors are immersed as actual members of these communities, so they will also help us identify the needs of the organizers in our pilot communities. The ambassadors are: M. Bachounda for Arabic communities, Georges Fodouop for French communities, and Antoni Mtavangu for Swahili communities.
What is next?
- Next Office Hour: We will be holding an office hour on March 31, 2022 at 15:00 UTC, which will be conducted via Zoom. We invite everyone to attend, and we really hope to see you! The focus will be on the Registration Tool. The team will also be providing community updates on the usability test findings and design highlights for the wireframes. We will also share our current Project timeline and answer any questions you may have. Join us and share your thoughts on these developments!
- In a few months, we are expecting to have the early testable version of the tool. By then, the team will be doing the first round of general testing and gathering feedback. We are looking forward to adding more features on the tool such as communication support, potentially by the end of this year. If you know other organizers that might be interested in following these developments, please recommend that they subscribe to the newsletter. We want to receive as much feedback as we can.
Thank you!

Wikimania presentation
editHi! I attended your fabulous presentation at Wikimania. As the slides / screenshare was not visible in the presentation, but the audio track is brilliant, what do you think about combining the two? I could help with it, if you wish, and the resulting video could be republished. Also, I do not know what the production team is going to provide already. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) 🦜 08:34, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Susanna, I'm glad you liked it! Fixing the recording would be great! Though I haven't talked to the production team either. Anyway, session slides are on Commons now. – Ата (talk) 10:59, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Super, I hope to get round to it sometime soon. Let me know if something else will be done. Thanks again, Cheers, Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) 🦜 11:24, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
Campaigns Product Update #4
editHello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!
We are excited to share our updates:
- Event Registration v0
- We have successfully launched Event Registration tool V0 on beta cluster and collected feedback from the first batch of testers. This tool is part of a more comprehensive organizing solution, the Event Center, which hopes to support movement organizers. Through this registration solution, organizers can collect useful data on campaign participants and their needs while respecting participant privacy.
- Testing update. In our first round of feedback collection, testers were composed of different types of organizers around the movement with a language focus on Arabic, French, English, and Swahili communities. Most of the testers successfully created their test event registrations and signed up for a test event registration created by other organizers. Simple, easy to use, and aids in managing event participants were the common feedback we received from first-time users. In contrast, access and proper localization of the tool were the points for improvement identified. We are working on V1, which will include communication support and integration with the Programs and Event Dashboard. This will be released on Meta-Wiki soon. We hope to address accessibility during this launch and improve localization problems once the tool has been deployed in local wikiprojects.
- The tool is still available for testing on the beta cluster. Feel free to leave feedback on our project talk page or this form.
- Organizer LabLooking for a way to learn how to effectively organize around sustainability? Join the beta version of the Organizer Lab on WikiLearn to understand how to effectively organize a global campaign around sustainability and climate change! Applications are open from September 22 - October 19, 2022. The Organizer Lab will be a 9-week online learning experience from the end of October until mid December that prepares participants to obtain knowledge about the topics that they wish to create, a call to action for strategic knowledge gaps, as well as more generalized Wikimedia organizing and campaign/event design skills.
What's Next:
- Organizer Lab Information Session. We invite you to join our information session for the Organizer Lab on September 30, 2022 at 14:00 UTC via Zoom. Join this session!
- Organizer User Rights. We are reaching out to a pool of administrators from Arabic, French and Swahili communities to collect feedback on what is the best way to define organizer user rights, what privileges to give to community organizers, and what are the limitations of these privileges. Feel free to reach out to our product ambassadors or send an email to ibrazal-ctr@wikimedia.org if you are interested to be part of these conversations.
Community Feedback:
- French Organizer
“I think that the platform will facilitate the process of promoting events and searching for participants”
- Arabic Organizer
Thank you!

Code for Africa Climate Project
editHi Ата, very impressed with your translation of the code for Africa Climate Project page to French. A quick one, can you kindly add this image and this form to the French version, tried doing that but was not successful. Thanks Jwale2 (talk) 08:31, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- Pols12 made the French translation (many thanks, indeed!), not me. @Pols12: I suppose, we'll need to make file name translatable and remove tvar from the form link, right? Ата (talk) 08:42, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
- Indeed, we should include image and link in translatable content. I just have edited the page and the French translation: please review them. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 19:18, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

editIn order to resolve a linter concern about misnesting:- https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Help_talk:Beginner%27s_guide_to_reliability did you intend the signature to be emboldened?
The portion concerned seems to have duplicated mediawiki bold tags directly inside and outside the SPAN.
'''<span>'''content'''</span>'''
This confuses the parser. If you wanted an emphasised SPAN, you can set style="font-weight:bold;"
on the SPAN and remove the wikimarkup bold.
