Welcome to Meta!

edit

Hello Psubhashish, and welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). If you would like, feel free to ask me questions on my talk page. Happy editing!

Please do not change any part of the closed proposals such as the one in the link above; as you can see in the big green banner at the top of the page, it says "Please, do not modify this page." If you wish to restart the Oriya Wiktionary project, please follow the instructions at Requests for new languages and create a subpage there instead. Change in translations

edit

Hi, and thank you for your activity with fundraiser translations so far!! I have one small request to make: We had to change three of the appeals; the change is the same in all of them, and the replacement text is quite short, so I don't want to e-mail people just to fix that, and that's why I'm asking you instead. It would be great if you could do the following fixes in Oriya:

Since these are small changes you don't have to go through the cycle of having it proofread and everything, unless you are unsure about the translation. Thanks in advance. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 05:43, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you!

edit

This barnstar is given to you for your help with the 2011 fundraiser translation.

Hi! I just want to thank you and give you this barnstar for your help with the translation of the 2011 fundraiser! The fundraiser was the best we ever had, both in terms of the amount we collected and in terms of number of translations. We couldn't have done either one without the help we got from you and other translators. If you are interested, we made a report, which has some statistics about the translations.

And: I have one more request, and that is that you take this survey. You may have got an e-mail about it, and if you did, please ignore this. But if you didn't it would be great if you would take this survey too, so we can learn to improve the translation experience.

Again, thanks for your help with translations – you're awesome! Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 14:29, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Your userpage is filled with about a dozen redlinks and templates that don't exist. It might have been a while since your had a look there. But since you are working as a contractor now, would you mind cleaning up your userpage, and leaving a disclaimer that this is the volunteer account with a link to your staff account. Thanks. Clean up your own mess!

edit

When you wrongly create a page India Access To Knowledge/IRC/24th June 2012 (already moved once), move that page to the desired correct title and change the content (standard process, recommended). And while moving don't leave back the old page, if it is not needed. This would require admin access, in such case you can tag the page for deletion. OR if you choose to create a fresh new page (not a good practice), make sure the unwanted pages get deleted. This would save plenty of times of others', clean up your own mess. When did you plan to learn these things? -- ɑηsuмaη «T» 01:48, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Do you really need all these pages deleted? PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:00, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ansuman, Apologies for this. I'm still learning and would try tag pages for deletion or redirect. Thanks a lot for helping out. PiRSquared17, please delete the page India Access To Knowledge/IRC/24th June 2012. This is no longer needed. Ansuman has already tagged it for deletion. Thanks --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 09:08, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki

edit

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nemo, thanks for writing to me and considering me for this. I will definitely try to devote some time after work. Please create an account and send me details. I would like to have the same Wikimedia username. --Subha (talk) 09:59, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Psub, regarding Wikimedia Blog/Drafts/Konkani Wikipedia goes live after nine years of incubation, we've already done a couple rounds of social on this. Did you still want to finish this blog post? Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 21:20, 30 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ed, Thanks for the heads up. I am yet to finish the blog and add more details. And yes, I am keen on bringing the long journey of the Wikimedians to bring this project out of the incubation. I think it is important to showcase the hard work that has gone and also bring a parallel for others who are in the verge of building a community for another incubation project. A parallel story will be inspiring both other communities and the Konkani community as well. Do let me know your thoughts, inputs and ideas. Thanks. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 04:47, 1 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Should FuzzyBot remove all potentially outdated translations?

edit

Hello, thanks for adding multiple new translations in your language here at Meta-Wiki in recent years. Please join the discussion with your opinion: Should FuzzyBot automatically remove all potentially outdated translations?. Nemo (talk) 12:00, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Psubhashish. You created Template:Find sources in January 2016, but it seems to be unused now and it has a script error. Do you still need it, or can it be safely deleted? —Pathoschild 02:20, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)Reply

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. Fountain (WAM Tool) Translation

edit

Hi, I've noticed some problems in your Odia translation:

  • in the Your language name in you language field you've stated that your language's name is ଇଂରାଜୀ, which translates to English. I believe the right word is ଓଡ଼ିଆ or something similar. Am I right?
Thanks for pointing out. My bad, I could not locate where exactly is this. Can you please point me where exactly with a link so I can fix? --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 04:14, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • in your translation there would be a window that looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/WxQPUiP.png It will make it hard for users to understand which button does what. Could you please correct it? The corresponding lines are 1) Your changes will be discarded (shown when a jury member hasn't pressed the Save button), 2) Continue (= Yes, I agree), 3) Cancel (= return to jurying). Le Loy 03:48, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Same again, I could not locate the particular string you are mentioning here. The two strings you're referring will be translated as follows:
    • Continue -> ଆଗକୁ ବଢ଼ନ୍ତୁ
    • Cancel -> ନାକଚ
You can also go ahead and fix it yourself now. :) --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 04:14, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Whose Knowledge? News - February 2017

edit

Thanks for all of your support for Whose Knowledge? so far! Get ready, we're going to need lots of your help in 2017 :)

What's new in 2017:

1. Volunteers needed

As Whose Knowledge? grows, there are lots of things to do! Can you help?

  • Are you good with data entry, categories, mailing lists or social media? We especially need people to help with organizing knowledge for Dalit History Month, and building out our communications (including this monthly newsletter!) right now!
  • If you're interested in volunteering for these or any other projects, please signup here

2. Pilot projects

Building partnerships and testing our approach with marginalized communities.

  • Dalit History Month: We're working with Equality Labs to support Dalit communities in South Asia and the United States to map knowledge and create Wikipedia content. Dalit History Month edit-a-thons are coming in April!
  • Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
  • Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.

3. Funding

We've got financial support for 2017!

  • WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
  • Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.

4. Wikimedia Strategy

Find us at Wikimedia Conference.

  • Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
  • What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!

In solidarity,

Siko (talk) 00:22, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow up

edit

Hello Psubhashish,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018

edit

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

Translation help?

edit

Hi.

You, and some other users, are getting this message because you've previously translated from English to Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil or Telugu here on Meta. The Community Engagement department at the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to get some information we think is very relevant to the Indian communities translated into these languages. If you have the time and would be willing to help out, please take a look at User:CKoerner (WMF)/Support for our communities across India, which we'll be posting as soon as possible.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF) 11:40, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Translate Responses

Hi, I find you translating the text here. May I request you to also translate the response from Wikimedia India present here. --Abhinav619 (talk) 11:55, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Abhinav, when I'd love to help from whatever limited time I have for volunteering, I'll have to say sorry here as I don't how to translate a response to a message. I also highly doubt its use. The one you have referred to is an announcement and that can be disseminated. Hope you'd understand. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 12:34, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Psubhashish: The choice is your's and I cannot insist. One need not doubt its use as the response points out to the inappropriate information. Thanks for writing back.--Abhinav619 (talk) 14:36, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's not about insisting but the real purpose of something. There are many responses posted all over—mailing lists, here and so on. I have never seen responses which contains point of views of individuals—that I might not agree at times—being translated. I'd rather make best use of my volunteer time on something that is open for translation with the right kind of use of templates like the former, is an official announcement in nature, and contains plain facts without interjecting any PoVs. I am sorry, I believe I do not see the purpose of translating what you have shared and do not fully agree with the tone of the messaging and would like to politely decline. I have always supported WMIN as an organization and will continue to support in whichever way I can as long as I agree with the expressed public opinions. At this moment and in this particular message I don't. Don't take me wrong my friend. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 16:58, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

[Interview Request] Board of Trustees Onboarding Project

edit

Hello Psubhashish,

I emailed you a little bit ago, but incase you missed it I thought I would post the message on your talk page. Please email me if you are available after this message :)

I’m Cassie Casares, a program support associate for the Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Development. I work with Maggie Dennis, the Vice President of Community Resilience & Sustainability. Our department is responsible for many critical operations in the movement, and that includes supporting the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation in onboarding into their roles.

We are excited to welcome Victoria Doronina, Lorenzo Losa and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight to the Board. As we work to help our new trustees better understand the different departments and functions of the Wikimedia Foundation, we also believe it is important to introduce them to different corners and insights of the movement with which they may not have much personal experience. We recognize that these outstanding individuals have extensive experience in the movement but believe it is integral that trustees have a sense of “us” that is global and diverse like our communities. We also hope to use the materials we assemble to help onboard future Board members, including those who join from outside of our movement.

To that end, we are developing a podcast that will be compiled of interviews with different volunteers from across the movement, and we would like to invite you to participate. Christel Steigenberger recommended you as a volunteer with community experience that the Board of Trustees will find incredibly valuable.

The interviews will be conducted by Maggie or by my manager, Simona Ramkisson. We would aim to schedule a 60 minute meeting with you that is convenient to your timezone. These interviews will be recorded, with excerpts drawn from multiple interviews to help create a full picture of a range of experiences. In order that people may feel confident to speak frankly, they will be considered a confidential resource, and will not be shared publicly. They will only be provided to the Board of Trustees (now or future) or to onboarding senior Foundation staff, who would also benefit.

We are on a narrow schedule to interview volunteers, so if we can schedule you before end of October or early November it will greatly help us stay within our timeline!

We are happy to answer any questions and would also be delighted to set up a time to talk, if you are able to help us with this request.

Best,

Cassie Casares ccasares@wikimedia.org
