First quarter report (Jan-Mar)

Investigation on Mature Wikimedia Affiliates' Membership Policies

Number of active members of Wiki Movimento Brasil in 2023

Given the scenario of growing engagement of the Brazilian community in the Wikimedia Movement and WMB growth, we have conducted research to better understand the processes on how membership expansions have occurred in mature Wikimedia affiliates, and the risks and opportunities of each membership policy.[1] The results of this initiative aimed to ensure the maintenance of an equitable environment where people find the necessary resources to build and integrate the Wiki Movimento Brasil while also ensuring the sustainable growth of the organization.

The research process, initiated in 2023, has involved interviews with twelve mature Wikimedia affiliates in regards of their membership composition, entry form and fee support. The public document produced by this research is divided into sections that relay the context and justification for the research, the methodology used and the data analysis that was performed. A closed, more completed version also displays the recommendations and scenarios to be discussed by the members of WMB.[1]

Nationwide community meetings

Wiki Encontros was a series of Wikipedia editing meetups held simultaneously in 13 municipalities to celebrate book authors and their works. The goal was to experiment with a decentralized event format that would contribute to the Every Reader Its Reader campaign. The meetups took place in libraries, cultural centers, and cafes, led by the WMB team.[2] [3]

The activity provided valuable insights into organizing in-person events in different contexts, spreading Wikimedia to new institutions and audiences, and contributing to the campaign. Quantitatively, 16 events were held in 13 cities across 4 Brazilian regions, involving 14 partner institutions, 100 participants, and generating 44 feedback responses. On Wikipedia, 30 articles were created and 256 improved; on Wikimedia Commons, 334 files were uploaded; and on Wikidata, 12 items were created and 35 improved.[3]

The activity aligned with WMB's strategy to foster and diversify partnerships for free knowledge in Brazil, focusing on collaboration with various institutions across the country and exploring new formats for Wikimedia outreach.

Third quarter report (Jul-Sep)

Campaign for the Paralympic Games on Wikipedia

In the context of the 2024 Paralympic Games, we launched a campaign in collaboration with the Football Museum and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee to enhance the quality of information about Paralympic athletes and sports on Wikipedia in Portuguese.[4] This initiative aligns with WMB's strategy to foster and diversify partnerships for open knowledge in Brazil. Our goal was to create and improve entries on Paralympic athletes and sports while using Wikipedia as a platform to raise awareness about the Paralympic Games.

The campaign encouraged both new and experienced community members to edit articles related to the Games. It became a community mobilization effort, combining effective communication strategies with our partners for broader dissemination. The results included 50 edited articles, 19 newly created entries, and 84 registered editors.[5] We also reached a peak of over 150,000 people on social media platforms, reflecting both qualitative and quantitative success.[6]

Fourth quarter report (Oct-Dec)

Wikicontest Climate Justice and Amazon

Edit-a-thon held in partnership with the Postgraduate Program in Anthropic Studies in the Amazon, at the Federal University of Pará

The Wikicontest Climate Justice and Amazon was an initiative of the Classroom to the Amazon: Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi GLAM project, supported by Wikimedia CH. Aligned with the strategic axis of fostering and diversifying partnerships for open knowledge in Brazil, the contest's main objective was the creation and improvement of articles on topics related to sustainability, climate change, indigenous rights, and biodiversity, contributing to the preservation of the Amazon and confronting the climate crisis.

The initiative achieved significant results, both qualitatively and quantitatively, mobilizing a wide community of editors. A total of 680 articles were edited, 368 articles were created, and 320 editors registered.[7]
