Hello Wutsje!, and Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Happy editing!

Thanks for the translation, Wutsje. However, we're missing just one string (it was already translated for the other languages). Would you be able to help? It's "Help us with translations" as you can see from my edit. Thanks! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 23:50, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done. I didn't notice a translation of that string was needed, as it was not mentioned in the example on that page. Regards, Wutsje 00:11, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
It wasn't. You did everything right. :D The only problem is that the Frysk was missing the string from other translation requests. Thanks! Cbrown1023 talk 01:30, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hoi wutsje,

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Wutsje, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

deleting redirects on lmo:wiki

Hi Wutsje, why are you deleting a lot of redirects on lmo:wiki? [1]. They may look as broken redirects, but it is because we're still building the single articles for each municipality in the Bergamo province, so we'll soon have them. And the redirects will be useful for people looking for the italian name of the municipality, to find the lombard name. Btw, you're inserting a template which does not even exist on lmo:wiki. Please revert your edits. Thanks, --Dans 18:49, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

My apologies. I've just reverted most of them, except for the redirects that truely don't make sense. As for the template: you had it, but it was deleted. May I suggest that you translate Template:Scancelà? It may be useful to have this one in English too, as it may also be used to tag vandalism, cross wiki spam, et cetera. Regards, Wutsje 20:18, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your kind intervention. I will also translate the template.--Dans 08:23, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

New sub-categories of Category:Local chapters

Hi Wutsje. I notice you've created a bunch of new sub-categories of Category:Local chapters. While in many cases these will be useful, it appears that you have also done it with a couple of non-chapters with no significant effort behind them (i.e. approximately one user made one edit to create one page, quite a while ago); for example, Wikimedia MidAtlantic and Wikimedia Saudi Arabia. Perhaps stuff like this should not get their own sub-categories under the main heading.--Pharos 16:47, 25 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I see your point, but imo they should at least be categorised somewhere. Until a few days ago Meta had almost 4000 uncategorised pages, which makes checking Special:UncategorizedPages quite difficult. As a result of this, totally irrelevant pages like WikiMaoist could go unnoticed for almost three years (and there were quite a few more like that). A few of us therefore have started a small project to categorise all uncategorised pages. The topic of Category:Local chapters says the cat contains "Pages about existing and planned Wikimedia chapters", so I figured it would be okay to cat them there, also as a way of informing users who might want to revive plans for founding new chapters which were already discussed earlier. But by all means, feel free to categorise them anywhere else. As long as they are indeed categorised, I do not really care. Regards, Wutsje 17:05, 25 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re

Dear Wutsje, thanks for your question. I apologize for having used the inappropriate words. But if we add all the links of different language versions (more than 200) on the main page, that's not practical, even the English wikipedia did not do like that. Instead, they added a complete list at the end. I would like that style, but I don't know how to edit the complex templates. So I think to contain only the links to larger wikipedias is reasonable at present. There are few active editers in Zhuang wikipedia, I'm not optimistic about it's future. --Biŋhai 06:26, 27 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mmm, sounds like the Zhuang wiki could use some help there. If you were to be assisted in creating that style, would you be willing to do some translation work? My personal knowledge of the Zhuang language is very, very limited. Wutsje 12:53, 27 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

It has been weeks, since the previous edit; that webpage has existed f/ three years: one of the ones that you had deleted had gotten to google in thirty minutes, not a month. That is despite that you had deleted in thirty seconds.

Please, a slight compromise: recreate those, but, without the redirect.

Gebruikerspagina

Dag Wutsje,

Oh well...

Wutsje 04:06, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wiktionary/logo/refresh/voting/tally

Hi, I see you protected this page, I would like to request that it is unprotected because:

  1. Most Wikimedians never come to meta, i.e. most Wiktionarians never come to meta, i.e. many people must create an account and wait for four days before being allowed to vote for something that affects their project.
  2. Even people who aren't registered users are allowed to vote, (well, it would appear that some one decided otherwise and removed a whole load of valid votes, so much for democracy), but certainly there are active Wiktionary editors with no accounts on Wiktionary, let alone on meta.

The way this vote has been handled by people from meta interfering is excedingly irritating, and just provides more ammunition from the wiki-politicians who refused to accept the outcome of the logo vote last time, on the grounds that it was not a fair vote because of X, Y, and Z. Teletubbiesfan2012

Hi, Wutsje. I've seen your edit on hr.wiki.
I've reverted [2] that user's edit [3] and blocked him forever [4], since that user has shown destructive behaviour from the very beginning. Your message only confirmed my opinion.
Several minutes before him, there was also an edit on that page [5] by an unregistered user. I suspect that this is also that user Teletubbiesfan2012, since Teletubbiesfan2012 has created his account in 04:23 (3 minutes after) [6] the same minute he blanked the page.
That IP has reverted the edit of user (oversighter on Meta) Mike lifeguard. IP has reinserted [7] (in fact, he reverted) the interwiki that Mike deleted [8]. Was anything problem with that interwiki? Does Mike.lifeguard knows more about that? Bye, Kubura 04:06, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kubura. Indeed that ip address, 74.249.96.134, was Bambifan too. The ones he uses are easy to recognise: they are usually ip addresses that are hosted by the US company Bellsouth Inc and they normally fall within the ranges 68.220.x.x, 70.146.x.x, and 74.230.x.x (although he sometimes uses other Bellsouth ip addresses, like 74.249.x.x). He's however also known to have used ip addresses within other ranges, like 69.85.x.x, which belongs to some US school.
As for the interwiki link: technically this particular one seems okay, but of course one does wonder what might be useful about linking images cross wiki. Bambifan has gotten it into his head that all wikipedias should have articles about the things he's obsessed with: primarily Disney related stuff, but he seems to be a great fan of the Teletubbies too. For more detailed information about his modus operandi, see en:Wikipedia:Long-term_abuse/Bambifan101.
If I were you, I would not spend too much time on trying to find out whether his edits are useful: in general, they are counterproductive and blocking him on sight is in my opinion always the wisest thing to do. Regards, Wutsje 17:40, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the quick reply.
I have no doubts about him - when I saw "new user"'s first edit ever, that was blanking, I've promptly blocked him.
It is obvious that such user has no good intentions. Several seconds later I've seen your message about that "new user".
About that IP, there was a "worm of uncertainty": was that IP someone else? Interwiki seemed OK... you know the rest of story.
We agree. He's a vandal. That user's edits are not useful at all for Wikipedia. There's no need for reexamin his actions. It's all clear.
Looking forward to our future cooperation, Kubura 03:43, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I provided reasons for my reverts. What are the reasons for yours? --83.42.147.18 21:53, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I looked at your edits. And blanking seven proposal pages within just two minutes is not constructive in my book. Wutsje 21:55, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, they were fast (I just got five that had changes after having been reverted without a given reason [one by Shizhao, the rest by Jamesfour] ready in order not to make mistakes and then reverted the other two). They are not blankings though. Most of those pages but one used to be like that for a reason. They were reverted without any explanation (check the links I provide in the comments) and as long as I know, the lack of proper announcements still takes place. Were my reverts wrong then? Regards --83.42.147.18 22:03, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you have problems regarding these closure proposals, then you should discuss them on their respective talk pages. It's what they are for. Wutsje 22:07, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes. But given the rate of response on certain topics in Meta that is not the best option in this case. Besides, we are now discussing about it. Could you answer my last question or just undo what you did, please? Regards. --83.42.147.18 22:10, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, given that

  1. I have not got an answer for longer than 30 minutes and I have not much time to spend here.
  2. I provided clear and specific, valid reasons for my edits while Jamesfour and Shizhao did not.
  3. It seems the only real problem was my speed at editing (your reverts took about the same time and they started only one minute after my last one... Did you really saw what I did in that time? If you were afraid I was vandalising [something I can totally understand and agree with], I think a good option would have been to give me a short block, an explanation and then check my edits).
  4. I think I am liable to the benefit of the doubt and my edits are easily reversible.

I think I will risk a block and revert your edits (one each minute). Please feel free to revert them if you think I am doing wrong but, should that be the case, I would appreciate if you give clear reasons for it. Regards. --83.42.147.18 22:52, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's not for you and only you to decide what "the best option in this case" is. And I'm not falling for "we are now discussing about it". Afaic this discussion is now closed, another admin will deal with your edits. Wutsje 23:01, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
So it is only for Shizhao or Jamesfour for to decide what "the best option in this case" is? That surprises me. But OK, this discussion is now closed, thanks and sorry for any inconvenience. Regards. --83.42.147.18 23:04, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

ka:wiki

Hello, Wustje, can I beg you to have a look here? Aslo, can you please tell me, who can help in this case???--Gaeser 13:49, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gaeser, this looks like a complicated problem and really looking into it requires a better command of the Georgian language than I actually have. Regarding your second question: normally the removal of a user's sysop flag should be requested here, but you should gain consensus about that on ka:wiki first. It may be wise to seek advise from Malafaya too, because he's the only bureaucrat on ka:wiki (although he does not always seem to be very active). Regards, Wutsje 18:40, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank for your reply a lot - you and Thogo are only human whom I know on Meta... That's why I'm asking you. Making anything on ka wiki is useless- Have a look here, it's written in English and I hope you'll understand everything and guess, why it's useless to do anything on ka wiki. He has made a wonderful present for new year, hasn't he? Also is there a possibility to hold a poll here, on meta and not on ka wiki?--Gaeser 19:12, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, P.S. must I tell the user that asked for comments on meta? Or it's not necessary???--Gaeser 09:03, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
The link to Malafaya's talk page you provided certainly gives the impression that discussions on ka:wiki have come to a grinding halt and that the chances that local consensus will be reached anywhere in the near future are indeed very slim. Therefore I'm inclined to think that a sysop bit removal request on Permissions may be your best option after all: ka:wiki does not seem to be capable of solving these problems itself. But I would certainly inform this user about the fact that they are now discussed on Meta: not only because it's polite to do so, but above all because he should have a chance to give his opinion on the matter too. Please remember however that I'm not a steward and that these are only my two cents. Regards, Wutsje 17:48, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I asked whether informing him should be done. The discussion gives impression - but it is that, it's the way he wants to be. Only 3 users took part in the discsussion - me, one admin and that one. If it gives the impression of frozen talk - let it be so. It will be better if you, or someone else from meta will inform him... If 3 users are more than this - [9] let it be so. :(Best regards,--Gaeser 18:02, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Teletubbiesfan2012 (2)

Hi, Wutsje.
It seems that Bambifan is active again, looking at en:Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Bambifan101.
At this time there's an IP 68.220.179.246 hr:Special:Contributions/68.220.179.246.
It shows Bambifan's edit pattern and areas of interest.
Wright now, as I'm writing this, there's a freshlyregistered user hr:user:Completly unconstructive user that deletes the whole pages. Here're his edits hr:Special:Contributions/Completly unconstructive user.
I've blocked him wright now for one day. Is he Bambifan? Kubura 01:46, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Correction. I've blocked him indefinitely. He was immediately blanking and that was all that he was doing. Kubura 01:51, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kubura, both the ip and the account are indeed Bambifan. "Completly unconstructive user" has been locked and I've asked a steward to globally block the ip. Thanks for the info. Regards, Wutsje 01:56, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for writing simultaneously to you and to Mike.lifeguard [12].
I wouldn't write around, but that IP is very active wright now, as I'm writing this, so action is needed wright now and therefore I'm writing to anyone that might react;I don't know who's online wright now (you or Mike).
Now is active similar IP on same articles hr:Special:Contributions/68.220.183.212. Kubura 02:05, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

No problem at all. That ip will be globally blocked too very shortly. Wutsje 02:08, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Again the new IP. hr:Special:Contributions/68.220.189.234. See the edit interest [13]. The Fox and the Hound.
That IP posted me this message [14]. Few minutes ago I've posted my message to this IP (68.220.183.212) [15]. Kubura 02:23, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

That ip has been blocked too (and the account Unconstructive returning user is now globally locked). Again, thanks for the information. Wutsje 02:54, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Please see this Recent changes on hr.wiki.
How is this possible hr:special:contributions/Bambifan101? Isn't he blocked globally? Kubura 03:02, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

That's not a sul account, so you will have to block him locally. Wutsje 03:06, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Btw: this is him too (also a non-sulled account). Wutsje 03:10, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can I block his IP with /16 for a certain period?
Won't my block override Meta's block? Kubura 03:15, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you can, and no, the global block doesn't matter. Wutsje 03:18, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Please, compare this one:
your userpage on hr.wiki.
That IP has made these changes yesterday: hr:special:contributions/74.249.96.152. Areas of interest are the same as of Bambifan101 (Charlotteina mreža = Charlotte's Web). Compare the history of edits on that article [16] (Bambi, Unconstructive returning user, 74.249.96.152). Kubura 03:29, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yep, 74.249.x.x is another one of his favourite ranges, just like 74.230.x.x. In the past months he has used 70.146.x.x and 98.90.x.x too. Wutsje 03:34, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Warning about General Tojo in Estonian wikipedia

Thank you for warning about General Tojo in Estonian wikipedia. We have no problems with him. General Tojo is not a registered username in Estonian wikipedia. Both et:Amerigo Vespucci and et:Fernão de Magalhães have ever been vandalized only once. The warned books are not translated into Estonian language. Untranslated books are generally considered not suitable for mentioning in literature part of article (except in articles speaking about these books themselves, of course) and are deleted without special notice.

But some users are worried about these repeated warnings, as they have no reason. This kind of warnings are considered spam. Please, do not add these warnings any more. et:Kasutaja:Taivo Taivo 11:44, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

'Hetze' tegen inactieve moderators op de Indonesische Wikipedia

Het lijkt wel of er op de Indonesische Wikipedia een kleine revolutie is ontstaan. Hij heeft mij en andere moderatoren een e-mail gestuurd met betrekking tot zijn aftreden. Mijn concrete vraag is, kan je als steward deze gebruiker zijn moderatorschap ontnemen voordat de afzettingsprocedure begint? Dat is namelijk eervoller. bij voorbaat dank. Sinhala Wikipedia_Disaster due to si:user:ෆෙලිඩේ and si:user:Nirman

Felidae & Nirman are continuing the damage to Sinhala Wikipedia inspite of repetitive pleads to the Wikipedia Administrators.
Due to quantum and the massive rate at which these two are uploading the articles a single person or a group of three or four can not arrest the situation. Hence intervention by administrators/Stewards is mandatory.
I would briefly pronounce my analysis on actions of Felidae & Nirman:
  • First Felidae had started uploading and suddenly due to some reason became absent and Nirman took over. Then Felidae and very recently for a very brief period Nirman was doing the upload.
  • The original English articles are broken down into small portions & therefore the benefit to reader will be minimal or non-existent.
  • The links in original English articles are ignored by the translators and hence producing Orphan Pages with no potential of linkage to other articles in the Wikipedia.
  • The images along with captions are ignored to a greater extent and hence the benefit is not passed on to the Sinhala reader.
  • The Templates in the original English article are ignored. This is a golden opportunity to translate the templates. It is not done and hence the data especially in the introduction are presented in a form which is of no usage to the reader.
  • According to the norms of Wikipedia the introduction to the article is the nutshell and hence should be preserved. Either it is badly translated or the whole introduction is not translated.
  • Sections and sub-sections (sometimes single sentences) are translated (or attempted to translate) and presented as individual Sinhala articles. Here the issues are
  1. naming of articles. Some bizarre titles are given which have no relevance to content or which are totally mis-leading.
  2. as only a part of the whole article is presented as an article the reader will have no way of co-relating it with any other portion which would be translated and would not know when it will appear in the Wikipedia.
  • The bad grammar and bad sinhala words in the translation. Translations are poor and does not reflect the meaning in original English article. On top of that the about 80% of words in most articles are wrong. This will confuse the minds of readers and would not definitely provide any benefit. Even the titles of the articles are wrong Sinhala.
  • There are instances the same English article is translated three times and presented as three Sinhala articles. The three titles are almost the same but due to bad Sinhala usage had survived as three distinct titles.
  • A banner is displayed at the bottom of the article page pronouncing that the translation had been done by Felidae foundation in collaboration with ICTA, Sri Lanka and another NGO.

Considering all the above, it is very clear that the uploads of articles by Felidae and Nirman is definitely damaging the Sinhala Wikipedia irreversibly. They seems to be in a hurry to upload and/or ignorant about Sinhala grammar and/or not concerned to bother about grammar or Wikipedian customs and/or not wanted to bother about anything because of SOME HIDDEN PROTECTION. Apparently ICTA and/or Felidae had confessed about involvement of money for each translated article. EVEN IF WE DISREGARD ALL I HAVE POINTED ABOVE I REALLY DO NOT KNOW WHY WIKIPEDIA IS NOT BOTHERED ABOUT THAT INVOLVEMENT OF MONEY. Good to see you again here. Regards, — Dferg 18:12, 1 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dferg, thank you, but don't expect too much of it. It has become clear to me that the way I think how project volunteers should be treated differs greatly from what some local chapter board members and a few professional cynics at the wmf office think about that. The same applies to discussions aimed at clarification and reaching consensus: I used to think that was very important, but the way this discussion was handled and of course the recent anti "porn" crusade on Commons have shown my view on that is obviously flawed. At this point in time I feel the ridiculous amount of time and energy I used to spend on cross wiki work is better spent on other things. My current activities on Commons for example are more satisfying to me. Regards, Wutsje 09:22, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Wutsje.

I'd like to know if it's true that only stewards can use {{yes}} and/or {{no}} templates in polls. I haven't found any information about that on metawiki.

Otherwise, I'd ask you to revert this edit, once editing others' comments is not recommended and the action hasn't been performed by a steward or administrator.

Hi,

Global Blocked

Can you tell me why my IP is blocked: 86.96.226.85 I wanted to make some editorial and formatting changes to "Education in Dubai" as it is so hard to read at the moment and offers very vague information.

Hi, this ip is globally blocked because it's an abused open proxy, see here. Regards, Wutsje 14:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the quick response! Is there anyway I can either send you the text I intend to change or another way to work around the global block? Or can you open up only certain topics (ie Education)? The content there is just not very helpful and hard to read.

The easiest way to get around this would probably be creating an account on the English Wikipedia, because logged-in users are not affected by global blocks like these. If you're unable to create an account yourself, you may request one via en:Wikipedia:Request an account. Regards, Wutsje 19:40, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your msg about peedy deletion requests on marathi wikipedia

Hi Wutsje,

I read you message on my discussion page on Marathi Wikipedia about speedy deletion requests. Actually we try to clean up some of the obvious deletion requests within that day itself. For some deletion requests, that are tagged due to some content preceived to be not-so-worthy for creation of wikipedia page for them, we tend to give grace preiod for few weeks/months (because the frequency of occasional editors/ or "ogres" on Marathi Wikipedia is of that order).

But ya, I guess we have been seeing increase in number of deletion requests in recent period.. so probably it is time to match up that rate.

Thanks for your vigil.

Yes, that "contributor" was a bit of a pita. I decided not to hide his edits though, since they didn't look offensable to anyone personally, but of course it's okay you did. Thanks for taking the time to do that. Regards, Wutsje 17:12, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do you speak italian? -- SteGrifo27 (tell me) 17:56, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I can read it enough to see that this was some stupid porn story, but as no real life or user names were mentioned in it, reverting his edits looked sufficient to me. Above that, n:it has enough active sysops, so I feel I should avoid doing non-emergency things there in order to not get in the way of the local community. Wutsje 18:17, 26 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Blocked for username

Hello Wutsje, I am a member of Small Wiki Monitoring Team. After edits in tr.wiktionary my user account was blocked indefinitely. Reason: unacceptable user name. It’s my global user name. What can I do for correction of this unmerited blocking? Regards.--Beko 20:20, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Beko, I'm not sure what exactly is unacceptable about your user name. Afaik it's not a bad word in Turkish, so I figure it may have something to do with the fact that Beko is a rather large Turkish company (see http://www.beko.com/). If I were you, I would email the sysop who softblocked you and explain the situation. Regards, Wutsje 20:48, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for response.--Beko 20:59, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Steward Elections

Hey Wutsje, I was just wondering what the requirements were for voting in steward elections. After going back to the 2011 ones, I see my vote was struck for the reason, "Ineligible, user does not have 600 edits before 01 November 2010." Now, the main reason I have an account at Meta is to vote in elections that are held here. My edit count is low on Meta because elections don't happen very often. My edit count on EN Wikipedia is 1,500, and I saw your banner that said Steward elections we're being held. So I figured, "lets see who is on the ballot," and I see my Support vote was struck. So, the main question is, is there a policy or something of that nature that would show me what election requirements are? If they require me to edit Meta I may simply stick with editing EN Wikipedia. Thanks! I'm Flightx52 and |I approve this message 17:10, 5 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Flightx52, yes, there is a policy, the elegibility requirements for the latest steward elections are here. As you can (re)check here yourself, the problem with your elegibility was not that you didn't have enough edits by itself, nor that you didn't have enough edits on Meta, but that - instead of at least 600 - only 95 of the contributions with your unified account on all projects combined were done before November 1, 2010. In other words: as an editor, you were too young, so to speak. I hope this answers your question. Regards, Wutsje 22:53, 5 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Vandalized a page? Impossible. Not on purpose.

I received a message from you. You said I had vandalized a page. I've done dozens of wikipedia pages and I've never vandalized any page. If I've done that it WAS NOT ON PURPOSE. Sometimes I copy parts of pages from English, Spanish or French wikipedia. Maybe I clicked on a button or a menu and damaged somethig but I didn't do it deliberately. I didn't mean to do any damage. But I'm terribly sorry. But... ARE YOU SURE I'm guilty? What page I've vandalized? I'm in Galicia, Spain. What was the IP of the PC that vandalized the page? Was it the IP of my personal PC or my home PC, or it was the IP of the many PC of my secondary school (I'm a teacher)? Hundreds of people can use my school's PC. 85.91.95.244 08:54, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Removing Accidental Bureaucrat

Hi, We recently had admin elections at Tamil Wikipedia. I am a Bureaucrat there, and accidentally gave Bureaucrat permissions to User:Mahir78 while adding him to the Admin group. Can you please remove the Bureaucrat permission for Mahir78. Thanks. --Natkeeran 22:43, 27 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Translator, We need you!

Dear Wutsje,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

br:wiki

I'm writing to you regarding the content of the discussion which is linked to my name on wikipedia brezhoneg. I've been exchanging with Y-M D and ex-smith about having it removed for the following motivations, (neither of them has budged) :

this feud is long gone ("edit-war" as you may call it). Furthermore it was an opportunity for Bianchi-Bihan to create mischief, the kind of behaviour he is sadly notorious for on wikipedia when he disagrees with other people's writings, whether in contents or inshape (see http://br.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaozeal:Kenlabourer:Bianchi-Bihan). As far as I'm concerned I am fully aware I got on edge on the day the argument took place. Considering I was not in the know about the do's and dont's of wikipedia at that time I now wish I hadn't replied to Bianchi-Bihan's earlier allegations and simply erased them as it has been suggested later on by the same Bianchi-Bihan (althoug there's no telling he would have decided to stop his mischief as a consequence of the move he suggested).

You probably know what Bianchi-Bihan can be up to. I, for my part, consider the argument would be settled if a common decision was taken towards erasing the discusiion. Either side could then proceed in peace, Bianchi-Bihan (and all the pseudonyms he resorts to) on wikipedia, myself on other areas.

Many thanks for your comprehension and for opening discussion among stewards and users of wiki, whether breton speaking or of other languages.

Fundraising translation feedback

Hey Wutsje,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback for Dutch using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:25, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Superprotect letter update

Hi Wutsje,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:21, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wutsje, since you are an administrator on a wiki from which no user participated in this discussion, I'd like to make sure you are aware of some recent events which may alter what the Wikimedia Foundation lets you do on your wiki: Superprotect.

Revert warring

Hey there!

Thanks for your help with fighting LTAs. I noticed you got in an revert war with an LTA on DannyS712's talk page. Could you avoid this in the future for a few reasons? It was a harmless edit, reverting just encourages them, and it's an abusive username so now the history has to be revdeleted multiple times. I know you had good intentions as I have found myself doing this time and time again on my homewiki, but this LTA wants you to get in a revert war with them. By ignoring them, they go away or at least cause less of a mess. There is some good info at Meta:Admin handbook#Long-term_abuse. ~riley (talk) 06:18, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi ~riley, if I still were an admin here, I would have blocked them on sight just for their user name, regardless of any edits. I didn't mean to revert them five times, but reverting them was my only option for getting attention of a Meta admin, since WM:RFH is quite useless in acute situations and I had no way of knowing how many more pages they would vandalise. I really wondered why it took so long before (in this case) Bsadowski1 turned up. By the way, my experience both as a steward and as an admin on half a dozen projects does not lead me to believe that LTAs generally go away when they're ignored. However, I do get your point, as this is a non-content wiki. Would you rather have me not patrol recent changes on Meta anymore and leave the vandals to the admins? Regards, Wutsje (talk) 07:12, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hey Wutsje, totally get how you would have approached it if you were still an admin or steward and I agree that RFH is useless for active vandalism. A ping on IRC, as you might know, is the fastest option for an admin or steward to intervene as we don't often patrol recent changes considering it being a non-content wiki. I am not trying to educate in any way and while I knew your experience going into leaving the above note, I think it's worth mentioning nonetheless. While they won't simply go away, we also don't need to revdelete 6 edits/12 edit summaries and make a mess out of a talk page. This specific LTA is pretty predicable and you may have just made yourself a target moving forward, although i'm sure you're no stranger to that. Appreciate you listening to my rant! :) ~riley (talk) 07:32, 27 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Vraag

Vriendelijke groeten,

User JaffaCity and his "Palestinian Biological Bulletin"

Hi Wutsje, I came across your edits removing the linkspam which user JaffaCity did place in many different language versions concerning his so-called scientific journal. We are currently discussing his activities in the german as well as the english wp, maybe this interests you. It seems that basically all activities of this user, including the research and publication, are fake. Greetings, Nico B. --77.57.129.32 18:31, 14 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nico B., thanks for the notification, this certainly interests me. Their edits didn't look good at the time, but I had no idea the situation was this bad. I'm sure de:wiki and en:wiki will deal with this swiftly. Regards, Wutsje (talk) 14:08, 15 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ketikoti

I noticed a while ago there was an edit war about the spelling of Ketikoti. I really don't have enough knowledge in the topic to take a stance, but a I noticed that the user involved has once again been unilaterally changing the spelling and redirects on the English and other language Wikis, as well as on Commons. I thought I should let you know. Francoisdjvr (talk) 10:07, 13 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

[Sorry for the slow response, I was afk for a week]   Hi Francoisdjvr, thanks for the notification. These edits were done by a long term structural pov pusher and sock puppeteer who has been blocked on nl:wiki for quite a while now (see here and here). I've corrected their edits once more (which they, rather sanctimoniously, only implemented on wikis where I am not a sysop): according to reliable sources, Ketikoti is the correct spelling of the name of this event, see here. Thanks again and regards, Wutsje (talk) 12:28, 19 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Crosswiki spam

Hi,

I was wondering about this edit. While I do recognize that it is per definition cross wiki spam, is there anything actually wrong with it? Is the information false? Is the sources bad or unreliable? It shouldn't be removed just for the sake of it if the information is correct. While I do trust your assessment I would like to know what exactly is wrong with it. Thanks. /EstrellaSuecia (talk) 02:50, 22 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi EstrellaSuecia, I take it GT'ing this edit wasn't helpful, my apologies. Here is an explanation in English. In my eyes, spamming a so called alternative for hydrochloroquine repeatedly cross wiki on the base of "sources" like this press release (which links to this site) or pages on sites like this one, this one and this one, does not add meaningful content to any article about (hydro)chloroquine in any language, as these "sources" obviously do not qualify as reliable. The only source mentioned in that edit with a short-lived whiff of reliability is the twice linked article on PubMed (link), but that dates from 2012 and even if the stuff indeed did show some In vitro antimicrobial and anticancer potential [...] against oral pathogens and oral cancer cell lines, in vitro activity alone definitely does not mean it is an effective alternative medicine or "health product". If that were to be true, you'd expect many more and more recent clinically relevant publications. Readers, especially those seeking medical information, should certainly not be misled about this. Regards, Wutsje (talk) 03:49, 22 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Reply to SRG

Sorry about not replying to your SRG, sometimes it slips my mind or I get distracted once I click the notification. Even with an attack page at nlwiki and insults on fiwiki, it's hard for us as stewards to lock the account just on that behavior. I absolutely agree it's deplorable, but that is where we need local administrators to intervene with blocks, and eventually, if there is enough, for people to go for a Global ban. Simply put, we could lock someone outside the original meaning behind Global locks. Now if we had 3 or 4 of the wikis block them indefinitely, then I would be more inclined to go for a lock. Hope that helps explains things, and ping me back if you have any questions. -- Amanda (she/her) 21:17, 18 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi AmandaNP, your decision was motivated with: As much as I disagree with the user's conduct, we are not able to lock 100k users just for one crosswiki edit (link). However, I think there's more to be said: this was not about "just one crosswiki edit".
I asked myself: were I still a steward, would I have locked him? I'm not sure, but I would have certainly discussed the matter with my colleague stewards. Here we have someone who has already been blocked for Verstoß gegen Wikipedia:Keine persönlichen Angriffe on his home wiki. He then exports that conflict to two other wikis by creating two attack pages, one containing a misogynistic slur against the de:wiki admin who blocked him, of which the rudeness just might escape a non-German speaker. This last point may be illustrated by the fact that he was almost immediately blocked indefinitely on de:wiki for exactly that edit (link, link). I would definitely have blocked him on nl:wiki for creating an attack page too, but I couldn't (due to unforeseen circumstances in 2021 I'm currently not an admin there, link, link).
The fact that this is a 100k+ editor does not impress me, nor should it, cf. Universal Code of Conduct#2 – Expected behaviour. You may find me too strict or even harsh, but it's 2022 and that kind of slurring has become completely unacceptable. Regards, Wutsje (talk) 18:48, 19 February 2022 (UTC) (Pinging Itti and Johannnes89 too, as I'm curious to hear their views, von mir aus eventuell auf Deutsch.)Reply
Hi Wutsje, thanks for the ping, it was in fact you report to SRG which made me aware of the crosswiki personal attacks.
Quick summary what happened: The user posted some personal attacks in deWP and received a one day block. Afterwards there was a discussion among deWP sysops if the block should be extended due to the severity of his attacks. In the evening we decided to keep the original block but warned him he might be blocked indefinitely for similar harassment – unaware that he turned to other wikis during the discussion to further insult people. Thats why I followed our warning and blocked him indefinitely.
From my point of view his action looked like „Suicide by cop“ (indicated by his statement on wikisource [18]). If he asks the users affected by his attacks for forgiveness, I could even imagine to reduce his block to just a couple of months and give him one last chance. For now I think it's ok that he's just blocked in deWP. In case he's continuing his crosswiki personal attacks, we might ask for glock again. -- Johannnes89 (talk) 22:45, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Johannnes89, thanks for your response (I was already wondering whether the pings had worked at all). Regarding the request: I read his de:source statement and I can see your point, although I still find that attack indefensable under any circumstances. By the way, there now is a second global lock request (link), probably connected with this edit (and this one?). You may want to comment on that too. Regards, Wutsje (talk) 15:40, 22 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Oh I didn't see the second request and his continued attacks. I replied on SRG [19]. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:38, 23 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Old user pages

Hi, have you tried using the Synchbot service? It can help deleting and/or editing your user pages on all wikis, so you won't have to tag each of them for deletion. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 02:48, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, I'm familiar with Synchbot, but I don't mind tagging the pages myself. After all these years it's a way to check what's going on those projects (some have been closed, others are flourishing, et cetera). Regards, Wutsje (talk) 04:52, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Well, the problem is that some projects doesn't have any (active) sysops, so please use TwinkleGlobal or make requests directly at GSR in order to not populate CSD categories. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 04:59, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Surely that's what CSD categories are for and why there are global sysops, right? As a steward I used to patrol all projects via this page. Wutsje (talk) 05:11, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
