Dear translators,

I have updated the Eligibility Requirements page for the Project and Event Grants program, and re-organized the information to be more readable, as well as easier to translate.

Your help in bringing this information to different language communities has tremendous value: many people are timid about grants, and having to digest all this relatively-formal information in English makes it even more scary.

Your translations can help more Wikimedians apply for funding, and thereby enable more awesome work to take place around the world. Thank you for your valuable efforts!

Lists of Bienes de interés cultural edit

We had a hard day today, but after some talking we have decided to accept Lists of monuments (Bienes de Interés Cultural, Bienes de Relevancia Local and similar ones) for the contest but as one point for each 3000 bytes. Thats one third of the normal rate. The question is that we consider them part of our Challenge's theme, but they can easily be over extended and under worked.

I myself have worked on such lists in es:wiki and doing them right takes time and effort. Of course they are really big when you finish them. On the other hand, by building listings you are marking targets for the other contestants, but that's another story.

You can see our decision reflected on the log.

B25es (talk) 17:48, 16 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

These lists not only list the monuments but also can orientate editors what they need to contribute and clearly distinct which articles still lack. If you take time to review my contributions, in each article I also created the categories and its structure, templates, ... (bigger than you can imagine). I want to be sure that after this challenge, next editors can follow my work easier. To understand shortly, what I did here is to set up a good performance before the content can cover it.
You want to see example. OK, here is a Barcelona cathedral in vi:Nhà thờ chính tòa Barcelona and pa:ਬਾਰਸੀਲੋਨਾ ਗਿਰਜ਼ਾਘਰ. Do you see the differences? At viwiki we have to translate everything until that we can not translate anymore, templates, images caption, and create the categories, when you create an category, you need to create its parent until you meet the existing categories. If you still wonder, why don't you create lists and do exactly what I do and you will understand. I encourage you do it and hope to see you can create all lists. Alphama (talk) 08:33, 18 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you need to do that and sort it to at least one category like I did. If you give 1 reference source, that's perfect. I highly appreciate with the correctness of article formats.Alphama (talk) 08:43, 18 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bienes de Interés Cultural by region edit

Murcia is a region and in fact the official name of the Autonomous Community is Región de Murcia (translated in Catalan as Regió de Múrcia). Burgos, for instance, is a province that is part of Autonomous Community of Castile and León. There's no such thing as a Región de Burgos. Another case is Valencia. Valencia is the name of a city -where I happen to live- but also of a province that is part of the Valencian Autonomous Community (which is officially known in Valencian -local Catalan dialect- as Comunitat Valenciana but in the Catalan-speaking Wikipedia is usually known as País Valencià, but that's another rather long story). You cannot list béns d'interés cultural de la Regió de València because it doesn't make sense: most people would think that you're talking about the Valencian Community, but in fact you're just listing the Province of Valencia, and not Alicante and Castellón. In addition, es:wiki uses place names in Spanish, while ca:wiki uses them in Catalan, so in es:wiki my mother was born in Burjasot, while in ca:wiki it is Burjassot. There are many differences, some subtle, some very radical: Onteniente vs Ontinyent. Even the alphabetical is affected: Chirivella becomes Xirivella.

As you can see, translating from Spanish to Catalan is not automatic. In addition, ca:wiki uses provinces for Spain outside the Catalan-speaking areas, but for these they use Comarques, an entirely different kind of entities which are seldom used in es:wiki. I will check what's going on with monuments de la Regió de Múrcia, because apart from it's title, which is correct, I don't think is all that well done.

I understand a fair bit about making lists in Spanish from Catalan. See this one. It took me a several days to do and two more weeks with little details here and there. I'm using it for a personal project and when it's finished no red links will appear. So I can see the relevance of lists.

I find that in general terms things are going all right so I don't think there's any need of such tactics.

Thank you for you understanding.

Commonality edit

Dear Satdeep I was born is Oct - So I think is the case with you (if I am not mistaken). In any case our common passion is Wikipedia. What happened is all past - lets bury it and move forward. Let the judges do their work. Lets not judge each other. I noticed some anomalies in many users but I am quiet because ITS NOT MY WORK.Even when you win the editathon, you don't land in a castle - you merely achieve something. Life is short and there are always things better to achieve. So celebrate life. So my best wishes to you and also remember to convey my best wishes to Parveer, his name surfaced needlessly. My deep regards to your father - I met him last year but couldn't meet him this year. Bye!! --Muzammil (talk) 19:03, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Stalinjit edit

Hello. I noticed a name in your circle of friends - Stalinjit. This guy, I find was born in 1993, when peace was being restored in your state.

It reminds of another person by the same name born when Punjab was reeling under terrorism. His father was a Marxist. The parents of this person, I remember reading in the newspapers, were killed by dissident groups who barged into the house during during the wee hours. The guy managed to save himself by hiding under the bed and had a traumatic childhood. Do you know this person? Or it is not anomaly to find Pro-Marxist names such as one guy I came across by name Stalinvir Singh? --Muzammil (talk) 17:52, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Muzammil, Hello Muzammil, Stalinjit is my classmate is M.A. Right now. So this is not the guy you are talking about. Well such names are not very much common but as many people were involved in the Socialist Movement, these are not very rare as well. By the way Muzammil, i texted you on facebook. I wanted to ask if i can organize any outreach event regarding Hindo Wikipedia as well. I have identified 10 interested students in Kurukshetra. They are science students and there lecturer is my friend. I was thinking about doing a little workshop for them in January.--Satdeep gill (talk) 02:06, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Monuments of Spain Challenge and Distribution of Prizes to the Winning Participants edit

Hello B25es, I haven't received any information on when i will get my prize. --Satdeep gill (talk) 15:27, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tomorrow I'll meet with the people who do the buying and sending of the prizes. I don't think anybody has recieved anything as far as I know, and time's passing, so thank you for your comment. B25es (talk) 16:48, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
You are welcome. --Satdeep gill (talk) 01:43, 7 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi, pleased to see this conversation between you and Luis Ulzurrun. Did you get any fresh update from him or our friends Alphama / Rauletemunoz, now that the organizers have even published a WMF blog: Inaugural Monuments of Spain Challenge completed and a detailed report on Commons ? --Muzammil (talk) 12:28, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hello Muzammil, I have not received any new update from anyone. Now I am just waiting. --Satdeep gill (talk) 13:03, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's good to see you all again. Thank everyone for everything. Good luck! Alphama (talk) 15:22, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Alphama, would be glad if you could share your editathon and post-editathon experience either by sharing any blog you've posted or any specific points by adding here directly. --Muzammil (talk) 18:16, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hello Sir, Do you have any latest news for me ? --Satdeep gill (talk) 04:56, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Satdeep. I have contacted Laura this morning and she's asking WMES what happens with the prizes. I finished counting in November and I don't know why things are going so slow. Buying and sending had to be the easy part, I think. Laura told me she'd make me know what she finds, because other contestants are contacting her too. She's a very serious person, it's a pity she's not managing the whole prize affair herself. I hope this situation ends soon. B25es (talk) 16:02, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please join me in congratulating Luis Ulzurrun who was granted autopatroller rights by User:Courcelles for "No apparent need to patrol" on 12 January 2015. --Muzammil (talk) 18:32, 18 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Umepedia and Spain-based Editathons edit

Hi, I would like to share my Twitter interaction with Kippelboy who curated WeAreWikipedia handler for sometime. I was surprised to see that for the Catalan editathon, no effort was made to tabulate the winners or to document the event in blog or article at all.
Here, going by Luis Ulzurrun's statements, the organizers have undertaken these two steps, but are not keen or particular to pleasantly conclude the editathon.
How was your experience with Umepedia? --Muzammil (talk) 18:21, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Well Muzammil, Umepedia Challenge was a well planned competition. They had a selected number of articles that were translated by them into English so that rest of the Wikipedians can create them in their languages. I got the prizes within 15 days. To conclude I would it was a great experience. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 02:10, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Monuments & prizes edit

I haven't heard from anyone since a long time...... Was this whole Monument challenge a fake thing ? --Satdeep Gill (talk) 14:47, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've been talking with Millars, who is the person who had to have the prizes sent to the winners and he's told me that he has finally ordered them to the Wikimedia Foundation shop. It has to be said that buying the stuff from WMF was decided in order to speed up the process (yeah!). I find all the process quite clumsy, several mistakes have been made... well, quite a mess. I expect the prizes to arrive soon, as it is all getting too long. I don't forget you, you can be sure of that. After all the contest itself happened to be the most consistent part. Let's hope for all this to end soon. B25es (talk) 18:34, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sad Message from a dejected winner of this so-called "Monument challenge" edit

Hello,

I did not receive anything. I waited for at least 6 months. I did not want to join with that kind of events anymore.

Now, I focus on (---) and some smaller-scale Wikipedias.

Thank you!

User's name and Wikipedia hidden - but this guy was a better performer in the declared result than me. Thanks to B25es and his entire Spanish team. --Muzammil (talk) 15:29, 8 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I'm very sorry, the only guilty is me. B25es and Laura Fiorucci collected data from challenge winners and me from WLM winners. But till not having all of them I didn't want to send the information to WMF. Wikimedia Foundation has to send the prizes of the challenge and some gifts for WLM. At the end I had to send the information without the information about two winners. However, we collected data for more than 30 people. The challenge was cellebrated in October, so the winners were announced by the end of November. Now, we are at the begining of March, so this is Decembe, January and February, so three months and not 6. I'm very sorry for the long delay, but WMF has the information and the prizes will arrive. Please, be patience. I've always thought that we are working on Wikipedia as volunteers because we think in it, so, some weeks to receive the prizes could be forgiven. I know that you can be irritated, I know that I did some mistakes, but we did this challenge with hope and looking for fun for everybody. We've learned from this and we'll try not to do the same mistakes. --Millars (talk) 23:49, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the August's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter, which will be widely delivered at the end of this workweek. Among other things, this month it features the names of the top contributors for the recent VisualEditor 2nd Translathon. Thanks a lot for your support, as usual! Elitre (WMF), 16:49, 10 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones.
PPS: We are maintaining a list of editors who have worked on VE-related content (such as newsletters). We only use it to notify them of translation opportunities, to make sure they don't miss Translathons, etc. If you would like messages like this one to be delivered on your talk page at a different WMF project, need any help with translations related to VisualEditor or would like to remove your name from that list, please contact me directly.

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review edit

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Survey on content curation & review Inspire Campaign edit

Thanks for your participation in IdeaLab during the Inspire Campaign focused on improving content curation & review processes from February to March 2016. I'm interested in hearing your feedback about your participation during campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.

Immediate results of the campaign can be found here. Please feel free to review them and let me know if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:31, 26 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

(Opt-out instructions)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Wikimania 2016: IdeaLab Workshops edit

Wikimania 2016 is almost here! Mjohnson (WMF) and I are running two workshops for IdeaLab during the conference, and you are invited to join us for either (or both!)

If you have a proposal or idea you are thinking about, and would like a space to work on it on your own or with others, please consider joining us for either the Thursday or Saturday sessions. We'll discuss a little about IdeaLab and how it works, and the rest of the time is space for idea building. You can also use this session to ask questions about Wikimedia Foundation grants that are available if your proposal or idea may need funding. Thanks, and see you at the conference! 2016 Community Wishlist Survey edit

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Kashmiri Wikipedia edit

Hi, Satdeep. I noticed you were just reappointed as administrator in ks: and wikt:ks:. Congratulations!(?) I hope you can help me.

I'm an administrator at Incubator, trying to clean things up, and I found a Wikipedia test project coded Wp/kas there. Essentially, it consists of about two dozen pages of Kashmiri in Devanagari script. I wonder if you (or someone else there you can point me to) would mind having a look at what is there and tell me whether any of it is useful to you.

I noticed (from the Wiktionary page) that there is a Devanagari Kashmiri Encyclopedia on Wikia. For all I know, that was built from this source, but there is nothing at Incubator that says so. If the content we have on Incubator would be useful to someone, we can export it to an XML file and send it to you. If it already exists on Wikia, then we can safely and comfortably delete it—and then simply replace the front page with a soft redirect to Wikia. You let me know (here or on Incubator) what you'd prefer.

Thanks in advance for your help. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:28, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Since I haven't heard from you, I'm going to assume that these pages are unneeded, so I will nominate them for deletion. Please contact me promptly (here or Incubator) if you disagree. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:17, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi @StevenJ81: I would like to apologize for being too busy to check and confirm whether the content is valuable or not. Can you give me a week and then I will report to you ? Thanks for understanding.--Satdeep Gill (talk) 15:10, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sure. (RfD's on Incubator run ten days anyway.) StevenJ81 (talk) 15:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Satdeep, any further thoughts here? I'm about ready to go ahead and delete unless you want these pages. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:51, 31 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, sure. Go ahead and delete them.--Satdeep Gill (talk) 03:50, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Whose Knowledge? News - February 2017 edit

Thanks for all of your support for Whose Knowledge? so far! Get ready, we're going to need lots of your help in 2017 :)

What's new in 2017:

1. Volunteers needed

As Whose Knowledge? grows, there are lots of things to do! Can you help?

  • Are you good with data entry, categories, mailing lists or social media? We especially need people to help with organizing knowledge for Dalit History Month, and building out our communications (including this monthly newsletter!) right now!
  • If you're interested in volunteering for these or any other projects, please signup here

2. Pilot projects

Building partnerships and testing our approach with marginalized communities.

  • Dalit History Month: We're working with Equality Labs to support Dalit communities in South Asia and the United States to map knowledge and create Wikipedia content. Dalit History Month edit-a-thons are coming in April!
  • Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
  • Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.

3. Funding

We've got financial support for 2017!

  • WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
  • Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.

4. Wikimedia Strategy

Find us at Wikimedia Conference.

  • Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
  • What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!

In solidarity,

Siko (talk) 00:14, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Library User Group is being renamed! edit

Hello! In the past few months, the Wikipedia Library User Group has been undergoing some major planning and developments. We just finished our very first open call with the user group members, which was a great success (see the meeting minutes). If you joined us during the meeting, we’d like to thank you for your interest. If not, not to worry, we have lots of things planned for the user group in which you can participate.

This message is to inform you that based on the input received from the user group members and the founding members, it was agreed that the Wikipedia Library User Group’s name be reconsidered by a voting process. As a valued member of the user group, we’d like to invite you to vote on the list of potential names. You can vote by following this link. The poll will run for a timeframe of two weeks. Wikimedia diversity - What happened at the conference and how to follow up edit

Hello Satdeep Gill/Archive 1,
We are messaging you now because you signed up as an ambassador for Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017. We are sharing this message far and wide, so apologies in advance if you are receiving this message twice.

During the conference, we dedicated a full afternoon to discussing the strategic direction and what it means for the work on diversity in the Wikimedia movement. Compiling the outcomes of those conversations, we summarized the key problems and solutions identified, and we created a summary statement. But the conversation is far from over! We still need to hear from diversity ambassadors: (1) what does working for diversity mean at your local context?; (2) what are the needs that should be addressed; (3) what resources are relevant for these identified needs?

We know that diversity gains meaning in context, and this is why we need to hear every voice. Please take a few minutes to go over to the diversity conversation page and add your comments.

If you’d like to stay in touch, and share your experience working for diversity with others, add your profile on our group here.

Thank you and see you on the wiki,
Sara (talk)

Checking over Wikivoyage Pashto edit

Hi, Satdeep:

On Monday, I'm planning to suggest to LangCom that it approve Wikivoyage Pashto. It meets activity requirements and has a reasonable number of non-trivial pages. I'm having the contributors do a little more work on interface translation.

That said: Do you mind having a quick look to see if I'm missing something, since I really don't read that alphabet at all? Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:42, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Support and Safety training modules edit

Hey there, Satdeep Gill. Thank you so much for helping to translate the Support and Safety training modules into Hindi. Your work is so important – these modules will not be nearly as effective if they are only available in English. Hello everyone! The steering committee election for the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group is finally over and the results you were patiently awaiting for is here! We had many great candidates with awesome skillsets and experience, unfortunately not everyone could make it to the final eight. Ready for translation: Editing News #1—2018 edit

Hi! This is an invitation to join translators working on the upcoming issue of the multilingual newsletter for the visual editor, which will be widely delivered when it's end of Friday in Central Europe. Thanks in advance for your help with this: getting to interact with fellows so skilled like the translators are is among my favorite things about my job :) Best, Elitre (WMF) 10:29, 27 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. Please let us know about difficulties you experience with the translation memory system.

RFL questions edit

Hi, Satdeep. I've got questions on a couple of Requests for new languages that I hope you can help me with.

  • Balochi (various): I know you've been looking at this question. At this point, as I think you know, Southern Balochi was marked eligible by Gerard in August 2008. Requests for "Balochi" (macrolanguage code) and Eastern Balochi have been open since 2010, and are the last two RFL open since 2010 that are still unresolved. Finally, the request for Western Balochi has been open since 2014. The Western Balochi test is by far the most robust of these tests, and clearly would supply the bulk of the content if we merge these. In any event, have you come to any conclusions on this?
  • Marwari: It's a macrolanguage, and its test has 250 or so pages (eyeball count, not necessarily accurate). As far as I can tell, none of the constiuent languages have tests running. Want to give me some guidance here?

Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:44, 19 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, I would point some valid points that, your suggestions that about using bal to have only one Balochi Wikipedia is extremely wrong idea due to different tonals, you say that many articles of Western Balochi articles are copied from Southern, yes they're copied, but aside from this, how do you believe that you can just read them once? Here I pick an example to let you drop your idea:

اسکار ( انگرئیزی: Oskar ) هالیوودی سینما بهترئیں

In Western Balochi we say "Ah-sk'ada (i s'kah inglIsi Oskar) halay-wood e cinaema bihah't iz", but In Southern Balochi, you should read as "Eh'sihka (Ingriah nasa:nm Oskar) Hewlayo:vd acinama battah'" This just like in United Kingdom you play a rugby, but in United States and Australia you should be did playing a football (and In India you played a soccer). How do you think that rugby is just football and soccer? Please consider dropping your wrong idea immediately. thx --117.14.243.241 08:14, 17 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@117.14.243.241: Question for you: Is the actual wording different, or just the pronunciation? It feels like you're saying that the wording is different, but I would like to clarify. Thank you. StevenJ81 (talk) 13:15, 17 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Steven, I think what this IP user concerned should better be answered by Satdeep himself, but to the best of my knowledge, this IP user is saying that "while the words of different Balochi variets are probably same, they have different pronunciations, and probably have different meanings", this feels very common in East Asia. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 10:31, 20 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: Satdeep should answer; you're surely right about that. But part of what I'm getting at is this: As a general rule, if the written version is the same, and means (substantially) the same, the different pronunciations don't matter. I'm certainly not trying to force a decision on this one way or the other; I don't know Balochi well enough. But different pronunciation (by itself) isn't enough to justify separate projects. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:57, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Note that as far as I know, the Eastern Balochi test project uses Latin scripts instead of Arabic scripts, so a merge that affect bgp is unlikely to be happened. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 22:45, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I am not yet sure about this. We have many dialects for Gurmukhi Punjabi but still one Gurmukhi Punjabi Wikipedia. Do we have any books or other written works in Balochi ? What language is used in them? --Satdeep Gill (talk) 05:08, 25 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
By such comment, I would assume that you're claiming that Chinese=Japanese=Korean? Claiming that Indonesian=Malay? Claiming that Hindi=Marathi=Sanskrit?... "I am not yet sure about this." Because I am sure about the entire problems here. "We have many dialects for Gurmukhi Punjabi" yup but how do they have ISO codes? "one Gurmukhi Punjabi Wikipedia" then what's pnbwiki? A hoax? "Do we have any books or other written works in Balochi?" [7] "What language is used in them?" Eastern Balochi, Southern Balochi and Western Balochi, but not just Balochi. Anyway, please in the next time, ask as "Which languages are used by them?" as in such cases, the grammar really should use plural form. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:59, 2 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Satdeep Gill: No continue comments for mine above? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:01, 5 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Liuxinyu970226: I was talking about Gurmukhi Punjabi Wikipedia. On the other hand, pnbwiki is written in RTL script and currently, there aren't perfect ways to automatically convert from one script to another. My question to you is, can you please identify and tell me about books written in these different languages i.e. Eastern Balochi, Southern Balochi and Western. I am also curious to know their local names. I am also considering about talking to a linguist who has done research on this. The Wikipedia article on Balochi mentions that there are some dialectical differences but not much significant. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 11:25, 14 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Satdeep Gill:My suggestion is that you should better read Persian Wikipedia article about this group of languages, specifically the "تقسیم‌بندی" section. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:31, 15 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Good point Liuxinyu, that's Why I said that different Balochi languages are having their differents, by claims like "they're same as they use same scripts", you can therefore mislead to say "Chinese is same as Japanese and Korean" which is really extremely wrong, and likely "Russian is same as Bulgarian" which is also extremely wrong, and especially "Spanish is same as Portuguese" which is damnly wrong! There are a serial of languages that are using same script, but you really can't say that they're same, which is I believe that Balochi meets. --125.38.13.62 00:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Come join Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women again! <3 edit

Get a postcard from one of the countries in red :)

Hello, Satdeep ! You receive this message because last year you took part in the CEE Women challenge. This year the challenge repeats, and it will take longer: from now until the end of May (about 10 weeks).

Please, feel invited to visit the page Wikimedia CEE Spring 2018/CEE Women and join the challenge again. Help have more notable women from Central and Eastern Europe in more language versions globally, including Panjabi. We again have a list of ideas for biographic articles of women from all over the CEE.

What is different this year is that now you can set your own minimal number of articles as a measure of your challenge (i don't advise you to challenge yourself with more than 70 ;) 10-20 is perfect!). Also, you can receive as a prize a postcard not only from Bulgaria (as in 2017), but also from a list of countries from CEE and around the world. Apart of being a receiver, you can also opt to be a sender of postcards from your country to some of the other participants! That would also be awesome!

Thank you in advance for any contribution you make to CEE Women, and for spreading the word in your local wiki community! Love, Vassia / Spiritia 18:33, 24 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Template Wizard script available for testing edit

Hello. I'm contacting you because you voted for the Infobox Wizard in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey.

The Infobox Wizard has gotten an upgrade - it's now a Template Wizard which works for infoboxes and all other templates. The feature is being developed as an extension (which will allow for localization) but there is a prototype user script which works well.

The Wishlist Team would love it if you could take a few minutes to try the Template Wizard prototype script out and give us feedback on whether it lives up to your expectations. This feedback will help build the script into an extension. To get started, add the following to your Special:MyPage/common.js -

mw.loader.load( 'https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Samwilson/TemplateWizard.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

The Template Wizard will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template. Your thoughts are needed on whether it makes sense for the wizard to be available for all users by default or if there should be a preference for it. If it's a preference, what should the default be? Please leave your feedback here. Thank you! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 22:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Satdeep,

I'm Mallikarjuna from Kannada Wikipedia.

You were the Organizer for Punjabi Project Tiger, along with Rupika Sharma. We've been trying to connect with all Wikipedians in Bangalore, across languages. A meetup like that, will help us to carry forward the momentum of Project Tiger.

Could you kindly, put a notice on Punjabi Village Pump & help me get connected to as many Bangalore based Punjabi Wikipedia Contributors (either or all of Pedia, Source, Quote, Meta, Commons & Wiktionary).

Interested Contributors can sign, we could collect names & get started towards organizing the meeting. In July 2018, we wish to host a meeting of Bangalore based all language & all projects Wikipedians at CIS Office Bangalore.

I'm sending this message to you & Rupika Sharma both.

Tito Dutta has been very much willing to support this effort. -With Metta, Mallikarjuna.

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library) edit

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Help me Please ! edit

Hi, I would like to know if you can activate the Guianese Wikipedia project, and please do not discuss it with another administrator, because I think I have sent too many messages; they do not want to answer any more, please, I did all that I was asked to do for this project, Check by yourself, it has been a year since I am told that they will activate it and create officially the Guianese Wikipedia, but they have not done anything so far, so please activate this project because it's really important for me, but it has also developed in me a huge stress, I think about it all the time and it drives me crazy to tell me that they will never approve of it, even though I did everything as they asked, please Create the Guianan Wikipedia! At least for a trial period, if you want just 3 months, but created the SVP, it's really important for me! LeGuyanaisPure (talk) 13:25, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018 edit

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

User asking about abuse filters edit

Hi. At user talk:MusikAnimal#Request regarding Vandalism Filters we have a paWP patroller asking about abuse filters for that wiki. I am thinking that this may be a better discussion to be had at paWP with your community, and if assistance is required to write local filters that someone like MusikAnimal or myself can be invited to lend some assistance to problems where abuse filters could be of assistance. I don't feel overly comfortable having such a conversation at MusikAnimal's talk page.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:22, 3 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hindi Wikisource edit

Hi,

Any chance for creation of this project soon? We observe in sourceswiki enormous activity of Hindi contributors, especially in last year.

And I am personally, a bit worrying that sourceswiki might become de facto Hindi Wikisource if not separated.

I think, some input from the Language Comitee what prevented establishing this wiki so far would be welcome. Ankry (talk) 12:22, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, there is a enormous activity and the Hindi community has just fulfilled the minimum requirement of 3 months of activity for the language committee to take a decision. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 12:26, 19 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania Ambassador edit

Hi!

I noticed that you have signed up as a Wikimedia Diversity Ambassador, after the Diversity Conference held in Stockholm 2017. In August this year, Wikimania will take place in Stockholm, and our goal is to use Ambassadors to reach out to local communities, to spread the news about the conference and the outcomes afterwards. The conference theme (still to be announced) will connect closely to diversity. If you would like to be involved as a Wikimania ambassador, please sign up at the Ambassador page at the Wikimania wiki!

A first thing to do, if you would like to help out, would be to translate the scholarship page at the Wikimania wiki into the language(s) you speak!

User script to view subcategories edit

Hi Satdeep Gill,

If you remember, you participated in the 2019 Community Wishlist Survey, including the discussion for a button to easily view subcategories (Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Categories/Button to show subcategories).

I sent you this MassMessage because I wanted to let you know that I have made a user script to do this.

If you are interested in using it, just add mw.loader.load('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:DannyS712/Subcategories.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); to your global javascript page, or to your wiki-specific common.js page. This imports the code at m:User:DannyS712/Subcategories.js.

If you want to learn more, there is documentation for the script available at w:en:User:DannyS712/Subcategories. If you would like to discuss the script, talk to me at m:User talk:DannyS712.
