Welcome to Meta!
Hello, Pppery. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Also worthwhile acquainting yourself with the functions of global user pages. Happy editing!

Restricted viewer access in WikiJournals
editHi. A few people mentioned the issue of restricted viewer access to some files, discussions, and user identities. A discussion was added at Talk:WikiJournal#Hidden_contribution and I thought I should notify you incase you wanted to further comment. I'm happy to add a note under your comment if you prefer, but I wanted to avoid spamming the discussion section. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 14:02, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
Some oddities around Module:Documentation / Template:Documentation. Could you please assist?
editHello Pppery, could you please assist me with Module:Documentation? Template:Documentation invokes it and somehow is generating all sorts of lint errors, such as having tt, font, and center tags, yet I cannot find any? Do you have any idea why this might be happening? (an example of a tt error flagged that is just template call, same thing for center, example search). Thank you! --TheSandDoctor Talk 22:06, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- @TheSandDoctor: Linter is rather far from my area of expertise, but I think that that just means that there is a lint error in the doc page somewhere (in this case, there are
<tt>
tags in the parameters section of Template:Please see/doc and<center>
tags in the parameters of Template:User from WMF project/doc). * Pppery * it has begun 22:12, 22 April 2020 (UTC)- Yup, that appears to be it! Thanks so much --TheSandDoctor Talk 22:14, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Notifying main contributors of the page about XfD
editHello.
It is generally considered civil to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the articles that you are nominating for deletion.
In English WP, it has been consensus for years to extend the practice to all pages, not articles only. Where is my notification? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 18:23, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- I see no point in notifying indefinitely blocked users, because they can't respond. You can see from my user talk namespace contributions that I do generally notify the creators of pages I nominate for deletion. * Pppery * it has begun 19:20, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- I obviously can respond. It’s you unwilling to listen. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 05:53, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
BTW you and Fastily fouled up the only live example of table concatenation at en:Wikipedia_talk:Lua/Archive_1 #Returning the concatenation of numerous words. Note that I don’t seek undeletion; I indeed seek apologies. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 21:17, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Issues with AfroCine MassMessage list
editHello Pppery -- I wondered if you could help me with something. I'm trying to remove my Wikipedia user page from this AfroCine MassMessage list. Identifying Lobby Teams
editHi, You archived my Community Wishlist Survey 2022 contribution, but I feel I did not express my case clearly enough. Certainly I am aware of tools like masz, but I am more concerned with corporate efforts rather than individual efforts, and such approaches are not subject to stylometric analysis; instead they are more likely to be identified via analysis of relations between editors, as well as areas of contribution.
For instance, it is not unusual, given any area of expertise, for editors to agree most of the time - however, if they agree *all* of the time then their relationship becomes suspect.
I am not aware of such tools yet existing for wikipedia. (20040302 (talk) 13:33, 11 January 2022 (UTC))
- You are talking to entirely the wrong person. All I did was make an edit to the page after it was archived. * Pppery * it has begun 17:39, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

editThanks for pulling out those stray translate tags. Proofread the message a dozen times, but I think I threw the header in at the last minute. Just curious, what effect did those tags have? Xeno (WMF) (talk) 00:44, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- They made the page appear in the list of pages proposed for translation at Special:PageTranslation, which I've been trying (without much success) to clean out. * Pppery * it has begun 00:45, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, that’s sub-optimal indeed. Thanks again! Xeno (WMF) (talk) 00:46, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Looking at that page I randomly see user:JSutherland (WMF)/autoTranslationMarkup.js; wonder if that would help, or if you use something similar? Xeno (WMF) (talk) 00:49, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- No, I prefer do it manually. I've seen so many pages with translation markup that's badly screwed up (but can't be fixed easily since their are already a ton of translations), that I'm not willing to risk using a script (especially one with the known caveat that "Please note that this script outputs markup that does not completely follow the guidelines for translation markup - it tags each line, which is messy"). A few months ago I fixed several pages where that or a similar script interpreted the opening bracket in an an altered quote as the beginning of a URL and added an unclosed tvar tag resulting in literal translate markup appearing -- in 2017 and no one noticed for five years. Even after I did fix the page, no other tadmin marked the fix for translation for another 3 months (which was what lead me to request translation admin rights). * Pppery * it has begun 00:55, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Web2Cit/Early_adopters translation
editHi, Pppery! Thanks for enabling translation for Web2Cit/Early adopters. I saw your comment in your edition's summary and I apologize I hadn't completed all the preparation tasks I was expected to. Actually, I just followed the steps here, where it just says that I have to wrap the whole content between <translate></translate>. I didn't know I had to split the content into translate chunks, or that I had to wrap variables. Maybe the tutorial should be updated to better reflect this? What do you think? Thanks again! Diegodlh (talk) 03:24, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
- I've copied this to mw:Help talk:Extension:Translate/Page translation example#Should mention more about segmentation?. There is some documentation about proper translate markup at mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration#Segmentation and locally at Meta:Internationalization guidelines, but both of those are directed at translate admins like myself, not end users like you, so you raise a valid point. * Pppery * it has begun 03:32, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
- Also, for what it's worth, I didn't expect you to do it perfectly (as you can tell, it took me 5 edits to properly prepare the page and even then I made a formatting mistake that I didn't catch until just now). All I was expecting was some effort in markup segmentation and tvaring content that isn't translatable like filenames and bits of code. * Pppery * it has begun 03:38, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
Grammar error on article
editI actually caused the grammar error on the Wikimedia_Highlights,_September_2012 page about 10 years ago. I thought I should at least fix it since it's not grammatically correct to read "the Curation Toolbar, which appears next to a new page, offering..." Offering should be "offers," or else it's a sentence fragment with no active verb. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by OjdvQ9fNJWl (talk)
- Look at the context; it's a list of noun phrases, not a list of sentences, so "offering" is correct. * Pppery * it has begun 14:31, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

editHello, unfortunately I did an revert of Sustainability_Initiative#How_you_can_help. I just want to let you know, I check the number from time to time, so I hope this is ok. The last list item (i.e. GRN) is not an admin-grantable user group and therefore should be split from the others. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:23, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
- Good point. I did indeed miss the context (it looked to me like you were just changing a standalone paragraph to a list for no good reason and in a way that invalidated translations). * Pppery * it has begun 14:33, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
- Fixed (and I violated my usual rule against marking changes that invalidate translations for translation, which was the motivation behind reverting at first). * Pppery * it has begun 14:38, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
Translation question on Web2Cit main page
editHi Pppery, sorry to bother you with this, but @Diegodlh requested a while ago to mark up the main page of Web2Cit for translation. Turns out that nobody has translated it and we need to make some major updates to the main page to make it more accesible for people that wants to know in a nutshell what the project is about. We were wondering what's the best procedure for this -- shall we archive this page? What we should do? (aside from learning from our mistakes, such as not asking to mark for translation something that's not yet ready, which we sincerely apologize). Any guidance would be extremely helpful! Scann (talk) 23:17, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- Since no one's translated anything of any consequence, you can just make your edits to the page without worrying about past translations. * Pppery * it has begun 23:51, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Ties in site rankings
editGood day, any idea on how to fix Wikiquote#Statistics? --Minorax«¦talk¦» 13:32, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- The reason seems to be that the Finnish and Serbian wikiquotes have the exact same number of articles as each other, which confuses the code that ranks them. This will probably be a temporary phenomenon that will fix itself, but I'll give GreenC, who maintains the bot that updates these, a ping anyway. * Pppery * it has begun 14:40, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- User:Minorax: I can't see what the error looks like because the # of articles is no longer a tie. I recently updated the JSON data so ties are shown equally ie. 2 sites can share the same rank. This was requested by User:-jem-. I had no idea how this would impact existing users of the data, but honored their request, because we should post the data truthfully and let the end-user application sort out how to handle ties. This is the first I heard it caused a problem. If you can describe what the error looked like that would help. Also pinging User:Johnuniq who has been involved in the template side of the project. -- GreenC (talk) 15:47, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- I see the error. When there is a tie, one of them (Finnish in this case) ended up in the last row (#72) and looked like:
[[:en:error: language code: -1 not recognized language|error: language code: -1 not recognized]]
- No idea where this error string originates, it's not in Module:NUMBEROF or its sub-modules. But NUMBEROF returns -1 in function rank() which is how it signifies an error. -- GreenC (talk) 16:17, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Probably the way Module:NUMBEROF/rank is programmed will make this difficult to resolve. The associative array indexing depends on a unique site for each rank. I'll wait for reply from Johnunique in case there is an easy fix, otherwise will need to revert the JSON data to strictly sequential ranking. -- GreenC (talk) 16:59, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- The problem is that Wikiquote/Table uses
{{For nowiki|...|count={{NUMBEROF|active|wikiquote}}}}
to generate the table. For example, if there are 72 projects, it will list 72 rows. However, if two projects have the same rank, only ranks from 1 to 71 inclusive exist—there is no project ranked #72. I'll think about that. NUMBEROF cheats and overwrites the duplicate rank so only the last project with a particular rank would be shown for that rank. Johnuniq (talk) 23:04, 12 October 2023 (UTC)- Hi. I am sorry that this problem has arisen from my request to GreenC; I understand that in the long run the possibility of ties should be contemplated because they better reflect reality and our code should adapt to that, but since GreenC has separated the data version with ties (thanks!), for me it is no longer a problem. -jem- (talk) 20:56, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Error in the translation language
editHi @Pppery,
Thank you for marking the translation of the Wikimedia Côte d'Ivoire page, but the language displayed in the language bar is English instead of French. Is this an error on your part? And can I have a correction?
Also, can I have the translation marking on all its subpages? Kod B (talk) 22:44, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed I somehow failed to notice the page was in French and didn't explicitly set the language. I've done that now. Wikimedia is a community based on collaboration. We try to avoid edit wars and instead try to resolve disputes through communication. You should not revert changes by other contributors without a reason, and if you do (as in this example), we ask you:
- to always justify your reversion
- to never mark the edit as minor when you fully revert an edit you dislike.
Thanks in advance and I hope you can contribute much to the community --Chealer (talk) 00:58, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment ajouter des balises de traduction
editBonjour, Je viens demandé l’explication sur comment ajouter de balise de traduction dans une page Metawiki. Quelles sont les bonnes pratiques pour préparer une page à traduire ? Lingabo (talk) 03:58, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Need for help
editHello @Pppery, can you help me mark the next page to be translated on the current version ?
Removed content
editHello Pppery,
I'm leading some clean up of pages within the Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub's thematic scope. I see this archived project and deleted content. I don't understand why that content was removed. The principle of depreciating project generally includes the full archiving of the project content since there are valuable information in it, not the deletion of those content. I couldn´t find the RfD decision justifying this. Any memory of that ? Yug (talk) 08:46, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
Content model
editHi Pppery, trust you're okay. Please help me change the content model of User:Vanderwaalforces/The_African_Curation_Lab.css from CSS to Sanitised one. Thank you. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 14:36, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Done. * Pppery * it has begun 15:34, 5 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing swiftly, I can’t believe this was done 1 hour later and I didn’t get notified. It sucks to see that I have to Subscribe to a thread I opened, lol Vanderwaalforces (talk) 12:58, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
{{CR Funds Card}}
editHello Pppery,
My recent edit are not propagated to Grants:Alternatives and Grants:Programs . Could you mark this page for translation (or let me know what I'm doing wrong if known). Thank by advance Yug (talk) 11:37, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello, with this edit you have stated that a wiki can no longer be removed from the wiki-set based on these criteria, only on the decision of the community. And you also suggest that both criteria must be met. I don't think this is true and that it has been discussed somewhere? AramilFeraxa (Talk) 18:35, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- See the discussion I linked in my edit summary. I asked at m:SN#Global sysop set audit to enforce the current criteria, and the stewards did the addition part but not the removal part. And my reaction to that was to begrudgingly update the page to describe the rules stewards were actually following. If you really want that page to describe a deliberately unenforced set of rules then feel free to revert me, but it baffles me why anyone would. And finally I didn't make any change to the criteria - I reworded them to have the opposite polarity, which means that per de Morgan's laws the or has to be changed to an and. * Pppery * it has begun 18:38, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I saw the discussion, but the opinion of 3 people can't be the basis for a complete change in the rules. Nowhere was it written that wikis that meet the criteria can't be removed from the wiki-set, and now it follows from the page. On the other hand, I still don't understand the rewording of the criteria - a wiki must meet only one condition, and now it follows that it must meet both. AramilFeraxa (Talk) 18:49, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's worth pointing out that I did not actually describe any rules - I made only factual statements about what happened. And those factual statements are true - in 2009, wikis that had at least 10 admins and at three administrators had made a logged action within the past two months were added to the opt-out wiki set. Since then, wikis that don't meet the criteria (have more than 10 admins and three administrators have made a logged action within the past two months) have been removed from the opt-out wiki set. Since then, with a grand total of two exceptions (both in 2012), no wiki has been added to the opt-out wiki set without an explicit opt-out discussion. The logs of the global sysop wiki set makes the truth of all of these factual statements apparent. * Pppery * it has begun 18:57, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- This is not true:) Only this year we have 4 such cases: [2], [3], [4], [5]. And I repeat, wikis are supposed to meet at least one of these conditions, not both. AramilFeraxa (Talk) 19:02, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think you still have it backwards. I was referring to wikis being added to the opt-out wiki set (meaning global sysops can no longer use their rights there). Your logs are about wikis being removed from the opt-out wiki set. Wikis have to meet both criteria to be added to the opt-out wiki set (that's where the "both" comes in). Wikis that fail to meet both criteria phrased positively (or in other words meet either one of the criteria phrased negatively) have been added to the opt-out wiki set (in my words on the page (Since then, wikis that have fallen below the criteria have been removed from the wiki set). Wikis that meet both of the criteria phrased positively (or in other words meet neither of the criteria phrased negatively) have not ever been added to the opt-out wiki set with the aforementioned exceptions. This will be my final attempt to make this point, since it's somehow not getting through and I don't think I can explain it any more clearly. I guess someone's going to revert me and we'll go back to burying our heads in the sand and letting inaction triumph over any kind of consistent logic then. * Pppery * it has begun 19:10, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, I was talking about the rules on the site before the change and you after, hence the misunderstanding. But I still think your changes are wrong. AramilFeraxa (Talk) 19:23, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think it's better the page match reality than describe a situation that clearly doesn't, but it's becoming clear that neither of us will convince the other so everyone should do as they see fit. * Pppery * it has begun 19:26, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

Hi again Pppery, please help me delete this page I moved to userspace in error. Thank you! Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:52, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think it is also useful to merge the history to The African Curation Lab, please, thanks! Vanderwaalforces (talk) 13:53, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- I have tagged the userpage for deletion but a histmerge is needed. I recommend granting the user autopatrol. ToadetteEdit (talk) 15:59, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- Done all. * Pppery * it has begun 16:59, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

Deletions
editHello.,
I recently noticed that below pages were deleted as Author request, but i didn't request deletions, is there any other reason for deleting those pages
- Kannada_Language_Workshop/Wiktionary
- Kannada_Language_Workshop/Wikiquote
- Kannada_Language_Workshop/Wikipedia
anyway i am ok with deletions (oddly i was meant ask for deletion), so i decided to merge all those pages from by moving Kannada Language Workshop/Wikisource to Kannada Language Workshop/Requests, reason for creating place holder pages was to facilitate future requests. --~aanzx · ✉ · © 05:57, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- You created the page and then blanked it. I interpreted that as a request for deletion. Would be happy to undelete, though. * Pppery * it has begun 06:02, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- not required, as said above was meant to request but didn't, i did blank those because it was meant to transcluded to Kannada_Language_Workshop header on each page seemed redudant, thanks for deleting.--~aanzx · ✉ · © 06:14, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
