Central Notice banner

Hey!

If a CN-sysop could please fix the InternationalWomensDayMonth banner by doing the following:

Within the style sheet, please add to #cnotice-translation-link:

color: white;

and then on a new line please add:

#cnotice-translation-link a {
    color: white;
}

This should make the [Help with translations!] text easier to read! :D –MJLTalk 05:44, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

@MJL I respectfully disagree, it would make it white, on a white background. I'd say it makes it much harder to read ;). Am I missing something?

Request for "Patroller" right

Hello. I'd like to request for the "Patroller" right on Meta-Wiki. I'm a rollbacker on hi.wiki and am an active SWMT patroller, and have patrolled Meta-Wiki via SWViewer and the global abuse log. I'd like to request patroller rights so that I can easily rollback vandal/LTA edits on Meta (I do have Twinkle Global but I run into filters some times, a difficulty that I would not face with rollback). Thanks, Karam06 (talk) 05:00, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

I am not certain that I am comfortable granting those rights at this time when looking at your block at Wikidata.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:12, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
@Jasper Deng: Would you mind helping us here in determing the merits of the request as you are the blocking admin. Thanks much. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 11:42, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

@Billinghurst, Camouflaged Mirage, and Jasper Deng: Hi , I agree that I was blocked on Wikidata, it was a courtesy, I was blocked on Wikidata without telling me, I should get a chance to repent. I had to create another account on Wikipedia because of a big issue. Was pleading with all of you managers to understand my strengths, and give me a chance. Thanks, Karam06 (talk) 12:34, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Karam06, I am hesitant. The block in this case is your lack of understanding of a policy crucial to rollback, that is sockpuppetry. What you had described is clearly against en:WP:ILLEGIT in the sense of creating an illusion of support as well as evasion of scrutiny by creating another account. I also note this global rollback request which was denied. I had given you quite a lot of encouragement there but then upon a review of your edits then and now, I did not see any evidence of active activity in SWMT. You seemed to request for permissions and had little use of them. I am also concerned about the asking of multiple stewards / GS for rollback on hiwp. Taken in all, this seemed to me at least on the surface as a case of en:WP:HATCOLLECTING as you don't have any undos apart from 2 self undos and 0 deletion taggings. I will not close this but with all these red flags, I am really not inclined to grant. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 16:59, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

GA Wikipedia - Extending 'upload'/'reupload' rights to a group other than the six admins

Hi. I am Guliolopez; one of a limited number of admins and bureaucrats on the Irish language Wikipedia project. Some time ago (likely in response to an increase in copyvio issues) the upload and reupload permissions were limited to admins (riarthóirí) of the GA project only. This seems to be causing several issues. Not least counterproductive behaviours on Commons (where, faced with no apparent alternative for FUR images) otherwise well-intention editors are uploading non-free content to Commons. And reacting to the feedback that then arises. I've also not really been able to address similar questions/issues raised on my own project Talk page. Anyway. I was wondering what would need to happen before, perhaps, the upload and reupload permissions could be extended to the "confirmed" user group on the GA project. Which is a relatively limited group. The membership of which the project's crats could easily manage. If I have the ability to assign upload rights to the "confirmed" user group myself, I don't know how. If someone else has the ability, I'd appreciate some input/assistance on how to request this type of change. Guliolopez (talk) 16:17, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Guliolopez. Adding upload permissions to different user groups requires a configuration change which has to be requested on Phabricator following the requesting wiki configuration changes procedure providing community consensus. The Irish language Wikipedia is in the commonsuploads.dblist group, which indeed allows only administrators to upload files locally. Meta-Wiki administrators and/or bureaucrats cannot make wiki configuration changes. Please let me know if you have further questions and I'll try to assist. Best regards. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:36, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
OK. Thanks MarcoAurelio. I will seek to confirm if there is community consensus. And (if there is) then work with the configuration change procedure. Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 16:41, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Edit request

I received a request for help on my talkpage, per this. There is a request by a trusted user to alter the archives of SRG, as some of the links used by the users apparently cannot be compatible for non-PRC users to access. They tried to implement the changes via Special:AbuseLog/1248163, Special:AbuseLog/1184740, Special:AbuseLog/1184735, Special:AbuseLog/1184738 which all 4 are rightly blocked by the filter. Initially I had helped them made some changes accordingly as I think it's sensible. However, after being asked to change more, I felt this is a massive change to archives and I am hesitant to do so without consensus. Hence, I reverted all the edits pending some consensus here to do so. Placing on RFH as it concerns sysop rights in general. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 09:58, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

@Camouflaged Mirage: Is there a reason the editmirror substring is part of all these links? For the record, it does not work for me either, and I'm not in PRC (getting protocol errors or Error 1020 access denied). The wikimirror.org webpage does not show up anywhere on Google, and hence this change makes sense to me. Leaderboard (talk) 10:10, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Leaderboard Yeah, the point is that it doesn't work for anyone not in PRC. And per my talkpage, the requestor hope that you can remove the "mirror" references (i.e. those words you put in code) as it will be indexed. Thanks. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 14:56, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Camouflaged Mirage: I might be missing something, but why should that link be removed (I understand that it will be indexed, but is that supposed to be an issue)? Leaderboard (talk) 15:30, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Leaderboard Not sure too...but that's what they said on my talkpage. (last section for now) Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Camouflaged Mirage: Could you ask the requester on the reason? I am just a bit confused on the rationale. Leaderboard (talk) 15:33, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Because such sites are inherently illegal, being indexed means "public". AnYiLinTalk 15:38, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
@Leaderboard ^. Thanks. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:39, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Yes, it is allowed by U.S. law, but it is not allowed by Chinese law. Being indexed means it can be searched in China, which is not safe for me. The object of "unsafe" is me, not the website. AnYiLinTalk 16:04, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
That isn't a strong enough reason for me, but I will leave it to others to see what they think. Leaderboard (talk) 11:50, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. AnYiLinTalk 14:33, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
@Leaderboard: Being indexed means being published on the Internet, which is not a good thing. Not safe, nor expected. AnYiLinTalk 15:56, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
This change definitely makes sense, and we may need a filter to prevent this in future. Some background knowledge: wikimirror.org is a popular mirror site on zhwiki operated by a local interface-admin. For PRC users, when they visit Wikimedia projects via this site, all the official urls in the response (html, js, css and etc.) will be replaced by the mirror site ones, this includes urls appearing in the edit box. On zhwiki we have a filter to ask user to fix these links manually before submit the edit. --WhitePhosphorus (talk) 11:20, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Up to now, my site has been able to display the correct text to users and send it to the original server, unless users use a self-developed or very unpopular JavaScript gadget. The main purpose of the local filter has become to block links from other sites instead of mine. This request is only to correct errors left over from the early stages of development. Of course, if this request can promote a global filter, it will be better. AnYiLinTalk 15:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Archives are archives; these are not active content pages. I don't see the need to fix them, users can manually modify any links they are choosing to visit if they so require. If truly necessary stick a single note at the top of the section that directs users to manually modify the link from A -> B.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:21, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
