@Arepticous: Wow that is so funny you caught me at the exact moment I was finishing up the fifth version of my userpage. Could you explain for me the differences between this proposal and Wikisource, though? I'm a bit confused on that front. –MJLTalk 17:55, 9 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource Pagelist Widget - First Iteration Feedback edit

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that Wikisource Pagelist Widget is now available on Beta Wikisource. We need your help in testing the widget and providing feedback.

You can test the widget by editing the following Index page on Beta Wikisource:

https://en.wikisource.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Index:War_and_Peace.djvu

There is a new ‘Preview pagelist’ button under the pagelist field. Click it to get a preview, and then click on any page number in the preview to open the widget.

You can also create a fresh Index Page for any other PDF or DjVu from Wikimedia Commons and test it.

We need your feedback on the following questions:

  • What is your general opinion about the Pagelist Widget?
  • Is it obvious how to use the widget? If not, what is difficult to understand?
  • What other changes would you like to suggest in order to improve the widget further?

Please provide your feedback on the Project Talk Page on Meta-Wiki.

P.S. - The widget doesn’t work on Local Uploads in Beta Wikisource as of now (due to phab:T257807).

Regards

Scots mainpage edit

Hi MJL, I think there's some rather egregious vandalism on the Scots Wikipedia main page. I'm on mobile at the moment so can't fix it myself even if I tried. Could you take a look? Wugapodes (talk) 02:27, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Scots main page banner & idea edit

Hello, Wasn't sure where to put this, because I can't speak Scots, but if you were going to add a banner to the main page about the recent fiasco, it might be worth having a link to a separate page with a couple FAQs (linking to the RfC, explaining how we are trying to resolve the issue) as well as to the RfC directly. (I mentioned this on Discord but wasn't sure if you saw so figured I'd put it on Meta for the record.) I can draft an FAQ page here on Meta in my userspace if you think it would be helpful. Hi MJL. First, I would like to apologise for referring to you as she instead of they. You gendered yourself on Reddit, and I only learned today that you have more specific preferences.

In any case, would you please try to obtain community consensus before collapsing/archiving conversations to which I have contributed? You've done this almost ten times now. How would you feel if I had done the same to you? James Salsman (talk) 04:09, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@James Salsman: You are mistaken if you believe I had a hand in collapsing/archiving your comments. That was SnowFire, then it was Zoozaz1. However, I do fully agree with their decision to hide them as they were clearly off-topic non-sequiturs on American politics. People are trying to discuss specific matters, and you are sort of trying to set a different agenda here.
Either way, I had not noticed you had misgendered me. If that was the case, I guess I am a little surprised considering my preferred pronouns are on my global user page. Still, I won't hold it against you and thank you for being kind enough to apologize for it. That seriously means a lot. :) –MJLTalk 07:52, 31 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi MJL, I just wanted to let you know that en:WP:OUT redirects to en:Wikipedia:Alternative outlets. It appears that you were looking for en:WP:OUTING (which could be piped to still be the same text). I was going to fix it for you, but thought that I best just leave you a note about it. Best, TheSandDoctor Talk 17:51, 26 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

I saw, that you're operating a bot on wikidata, that has not been approved and that does not provide any information about its task. This appears to be in violation of wikidata:WD:Bots policy. Worried edit

MJL, honestly, as an uninvolved editor in this matter, I'm concerned as to why you need to "chase" Nomad from there to there and to here. You don't need to chase someone who opposed your proposal with a fairly reasonable rationale to their talk page... --Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 13:24, 15 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Jeromi Mikhael: There is no chasing anyone. I was trying to explain, in a more private setting, that Nomad should seek to ban the sock puppet sleeper accounts. –MJLTalk 16:33, 15 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Understood, thanks.  --Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 22:41, 15 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource OCR edit

Hello, I have an account at the german Wikisource and would like to publish books in the font Fraktur, which have lost their copyright due to age. Most of the old german books were set in this font. I have already scanned the books as *.pdf and would need OCR now. Now I have read about your proposal. Since I am not a developer, I hardly understand anything of the text and also not the linked pages like Phabricator. Therefore I would like to ask:

  1. Does your request only refer to the english Wikisource, but also to the german one?
  2. Are you asking for software that provides OCR for Wikisource users who have already scanned the book? If so, that is what I am looking for and I would like to say thank you for the proposal.
  3. In your proposal you write: "Who would benefit: Any Wikisource contributor working from a scanned text without a pre-existing OCR layer." I do not understand "OCR layer". Does that mean that the user has already scanned the book but has not yet done OCR?
  4. Would the software support the Font Fraktur?
  5. Is this software used online or installed locally on the computer of the Wikisource users?
  6. Would the use of the software require an account at a third party such as Google, Apple or Facebook?
  7. If the software is used online, how would this work? Could I simply upload a *.pdf and then download the result of the OCR? Or is this more complex and do I need special or even developer knowledge to operate it? Would the software run on Wikimedia server?
  8. Maybe more people would sign your proposal if it was not only understandable for developers.

I would be happy about an answer.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.150.170.95 (talk) 05:34, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I am looking for any new OCR tool which works across languages. Something that would help a user read a pdf (or similar) and automatically have the text extracted from it. Does that make more sense? –MJLTalk 15:37, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Global templates edit

Hi!

I'm writing this because some time ago you supported the Wikitemplates proposal.

That proposal appears to be inactive, but I wrote a very similar and more detailed proposal called Global templates.

Can you please read the proposal (it's translated to several langauges!), and if it sounds good, to support it by adding your signature at the page mw:Global templates/Discuss?

Thank you! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:29, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ad:Requests for comment/Global ban for Kubura/wikis

Hi. If you don't mind me asking, did you fetch that list from anywhere in this site? From time to time, Meta users pick the wrong Village Pump address on plwiktionary as in this case: wikt:pl:Special:Diff/7471765. Wikisłownik:Bar became a disambig page a few years ago, the notice for this particular matter should have landed here. I wonder if there is another "master" list that we need to update. By the way, there has never been a Kubura user active on plwikt, the notice should have targeted Kubura2 instead (the same applies at least to eswikt, too). Kind regards, Peter Bowman (talk) 10:06, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Peter Bowman: I got it from Wikidata. Also, I forgot about the second account when we were drafting the message. –MJLTalk 16:42, 18 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I think you need to see this Kubura response from here [2]? People should see this, as that is his defence. Kanikosen (talk) 19:27, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Kanikosen: Yeah, it's pretty bigoted to say that Sakretsu can't act impartially because they're Italian. –MJLTalk 21:48, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wiki of Functions followup edit

Hi there, I'm a researcher for the Wikilambda project. Last month we held a naming contest and I'm following up with those who voted to see if you might be willing to provide some feedback to help guide the project.

This would be a 45 minute conversation about your past experience with other Wikimedia projects and thoughts about the future of this new initiative. I'm hoping to gather a wide range of perspectives so I'd be interested in your opinion regardless of whether you plan to have further involvement.

As a way of saying thanks, the research team is offering a $35 gift card (in your local currency) for participation. We could chat by phone or through a website for audio conferencing.

If you're interested just pick a time slot from this calendar link:
https://wikilambda-voter.youcanbook.me

Hope to hear from you soon!

UCoC enforcement edit

I just wanted to say I hope you aren't taking any of this personally. I am fairly outraged by some provisions of the enforcement guidelines, but I do appreciate that you have been pretty much the only person to respond to these concerns. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:34, 20 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Beeblebrox: Don't worry, I'm not taking any of it personally! I'm looking to get more info about the training, so I had to stop responding for a bit. –MJLTalk 04:35, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Cool. That is certainly a big part of the issue some people have here, there's substantial grey areas. I am struggling to think of who would even be qualified to give training on how to enforce a brand-new global policy. "Block people who are being jerks" is already standard procedure on most projects anyway. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:43, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

UCOC enforcement after April 2022? edit

Hi, and thanks for volunteering to draft the UCOC enforcement guidelines. On 20 April 2022, the Board of Trustees announced that they would refine the UCOC enforcement guidelines. @Adrianmn1110: Per this prior announcement a Revisions Committee composed of members of both drafting committee has been formed. I can't really reveal more than that at the moment (partially because I missed the last meeting sadly). –MJLTalk 16:19, 19 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
