Mehman Ibragimov (Mehman97)

edit

Hello, my name is Mehman and I'm from Georgia. I've been an active Wikimedia projects editor since 2016, my home wiki is the Georgian Wikipedia (but I'm also active on Wikidata, Commons, Meta and Wikisource). Since 2017, I have also been active in Wikimedia UG Georgia, together with my Wikipedia colleagues, I registered our UG in Georgia as non-profit in 2019, and we are already an official non-profit organization in Georgia now, which I am very proud of. We actively develop Wikimedia projects in Georgian and popularize them locally to develop Wikimedia projects and movement in Georgia.

I have a BA degree in political science from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. At the moment I am studying at the Faculty of International Relations (MA degree) at Tbilisi Ilia State University. My education in these areas helps me a lot in my work on the Committee.

From the beginning of 2020 to the end of 2021, I was already AffCom member and worked on many difficult and problematic cases. I already have enough experience in the committee (as a member, as well as an Officer). I have good skills in working with different people representing different cultures, as well as I have skills in working with administrative cases. I love helping people and our movement as a whole grow and move forward, which gives me a reason to continue my work on this Committee.

At the moment, I have enough time to work on the committee.

Questions
  1. What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?
As I have already indicated, I have been active in the Wikimedia Movement for 5 years already, for 4 years I have been a Board Member and Chair of Wikimedia UG Georgia, which gives me the opportunity and skills to work in a committee that works closely with Affiliates. In addition, I have already served on this committee for two years.
  1. AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?
I have enough time that I can spend on committee work. I have signed a NDA and understand the risks of confidential information. Conflict of interest is a serious issue, when I know or feel that I have a COI on specific issues or can be unbiased I will of course refuse to work on this case and notify my colleagues about it.
  1. Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?
I want to continue working in Recognitions.
  1. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think makes a group of Wikimedians ready to function together as an affiliate?
The main thing is to have enthusiasm and a desire to develop and promote projects and the Wikimedia movement. People who want to do this will do it voluntarily and without any support (at first stage) and this will result in a long list of activities that they have carried out. This will create a great background for us to evaluate their skills and recognize them as an affiliation. In addition, everyone should be aware of the importance of our mission and goals, which will enable the sustainable development of our movement.
  1. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates?
Function as an official affiliate, allows you to use the Wikimedia trademark, as well as receive financial support from the WMF. In addition, such entities can play a bridging role between the community and the WMF, and at the local level, affiliates can better help develop the local Wikimedia movement. At the same time, affiliates must be transparent and open to all and must be held accountable for the role and work they perform.

Thanks, --Mehman 97 16:49, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Questions
  1. What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?
I've been a Wikimedian for more than eight years now, and I have participated in many strategic roles to support Wikipedia and its sister project in Africa. See some of the roles above.
  1. AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?
I understand the need to manage time and responsibility for all assigned tasks. The principle of Confidentiality is one of the pinnacles of my career as an accountant, and I have also worked in many committees ( Affcom inclusive) and organisations where I have served or appointed' and I have never been found wanting. Also, I understand the impact of COI on issues that are very close to me and the need to be unbiased if there is a need to act on any of such tasks ( if demanded by circumstances), but in most cases, I need to declare my COI. to the committee and request to move the task to other members of the committee.

  1. Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?
I wish to continue on Conflicts Intervention subcomittees.
  1. If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe your experience working with conflicts resolution.
I have worked for more than three years as a member of the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee and community leader in my country. I have therefore helped in the resolution of many community-related conflicts.
  1. If you are interested in serving on the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee, please describe how you have helped build consensus and support diversity.
The following steps are germane to build a consensus and support diversity:
  1. It is important that you and your team have the right skills and experience to handle the case at hand
  2. The issues must be outlined, this could be done by gathering all the necessary information on the case.
  3. There is need to facilitate an open discussion among the parties involved in the disputes
  4. Ensure all the parties involved in the disputes participate in the discussion

Questions for the candidate

I am Joy Agyepong, a public servant with the local government of Ghana. I have been actively contributing to Wikimedia projects for 6 years now.I am a social entrepreneur and a co-founder of an environmental oriented NGO for the past four years. I am also a Director of a fact checking organisation thus, Fact Lens Gh for the past year now. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a strong focus in Total Quality Management and a Diploma in Management all from the University of Professional Studies, Accra - Ghana. I also have a professional certificate in Social enterprise management, Financial Management Principles from Boston College, Wikimedia Project Management course and Wiki Learn Partnerships Course.

I am a passionate contributor in the Ghanaian communities of Ghana. As an active volunteer with Wikimedia Ghana User Group and was the immediate first female Administrative Executive with Open Foundation West Africa for two year tenure from 2018 - 2020 where I initiated internal coaching groups for community members, Wiki media tour with radio and Tv stations to educate thousands of viewers and listeners about the pros and cons of Wikipedia, Wiki threads on social media, prepared training materials and equipped over 200 youths with Wikimedia knowledge and coordinator for AfroCine project in Ghana.I have helped establish and managed mini hubs and clubs for three years. I am also an active volunteer with the Wiki Women's User Group and Wikimedians for sustainable development user group.

Aside from my leading roles, I have been actively part of these two groups since my years as a wikipedian. Through these experiences, I lead an independent online based group called the Wiki Hour Initiative where ad-hoc newbies are trained in the area of SDG’s. I have successfully organised events such as the Wiki4Climate, Wiki4Humanrights and Wiki4Inclusion campaign under the Wiki Hour Initiate group which has improved wikimedia projects with over 1000 improved and created articles, not forgetting having about 500 audio visuals in wikimedia commons. Over the past 6 years, I have contributed in diverse ways to support wikimedia projects and volunteered in conferences such as trust and safety volunteer for Wikimania 2021 andFacilitator at WikiIndaba. I was the international project coordinator for Wiki Loves Folklore in 2021. Currently, I serve as a committee member with the community grant resource team.

I believe joining this committee will be a great avenue to learn, support, guide and share ideas that will make the wikimedia communities have a positive ripple effect in their geographical area.

Step 3. Answers to questions
  • NOTE: Questions 1-3 are required for all candidates.
  • Question 4 & 5 should be answered by those interested in joining the Recognitions subcommittee.
  • Question 6 & 7 should be answered by those interested in joining the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee.
  • If you are willing to nominate yourself for both subcommittees, answer all questions.
  1. What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?

I have led many projects spanning from Summer Open Schools mini summits, Digital literacy training with USEmbassy Ghana staff and newbies, Wiki Loves projects country organiser for over 3 years also I organised the Wiki Salon in Ghana which was hinged on Capacity building and community development in 2019. I have also run three successful projects thus Wiki4Climate, Wiki4Humanrights and Wiki4Inclusion under the Wiki Hour Initiative since 2020 with a team of 6 at the moment. This has resulted in some community members becoming leaders, organisers and trainers in the community at large.

  1. AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?

Yes indeed time is of essence and with such a committee one has to be up to task in order to meet timely demands. As a manager and organiser, I believe in order to have a strong structure confidentiality dies down any sort of conflicting issues that may arise. It is important to ensure decorum and respect across teams and groups. Affcom is a very important body within the wikimedia group hence all these skillset must be well managed in order to meet its goal and objective. So I believe I will be able to offer 5 hours each month also, I will ensure that wherever there is an issue of conflict of interest, the team will be informed accordingly.

  1. Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?

Recognitions subcommittee

  1. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think makes a group of Wikimedians ready to function together as an affiliate?

I believe as much as the wikimedia community is open, a group can function as an affiliate when they have fully scanned the environment to identify gaps which can be bridged in a given setting or area of interest. By doing so, they have a strong team together with relevant goals and objectives which align with that of the Wikimedia foundation in terms of expansion and growth of communities across the world.

  1. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates?

An affiliate benefits substantially when it operates independently to grow teams and increase content on Wikimedia project in their home country. Is governed by a well structured constitution, sets its vision and goals. Also has the opportunity to lead, plan and organise series of activities which is backed by the Wikimedia foundation. However, the affiliate must maintain strong financial discipline, accountability, increase collaboration and make available resources to support the movement and also create a good image of Wikimedia in the given community.

I'm a Software Engineer (Python, Rust, Machine Learning) and a Computing Books Author from France, involved in the Wikimedia movement for 11 years. I'm graduated in both Sociology (MSc Speciality: "Social vulnerability") and Computing science. I'm mainly active on Wikidata & Wikimedia Commons.

Questions:

1. What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?

I was a board member of WmFrance a few years ago. I also had the opportunity to participate in several Wikimedia events (Wikimania, Wikimedia Conference, local events) where I was able to meet many people and learn many things. I've also been a member of the Wikimania 2018 Program Committee. But it is above all my experience as a contributor to WIkimedia Commons that taught me. Wikimedia Commons is international in nature, where the legal and human cultures are very different.

2. AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?

With difficulty I guess :) It's definitely not easy. First it looks a bit like a side of my professional life (IT project management) that I hope will be useful to me. Above all, I will try to listen to the AffCom people and learn from their experience.

3. Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?

Conflicts Intervention I guess. This is the subject on which I can be the most helpful. Having been involved in (numerous) interpersonal conflicts myself (in the past): I had the lucidity to want to improve myself, to be able to think about the issue (for a long time), accept and get relevant help, support & training and finally improve myself enough to be able to help (a bit) others ones.

My name is Johnny Alegre from the Philippines, a creative writer, musician, composer, IT infrastructure project professional, and Wikipedian. I began my creative journey by osmosis from a very young age –emulating my heroes—and won our country’s most prestigious national literary recognition at the age of 19, back in 1974. The following year, I was awarded a recording contract and started my career in songwriting and professional sound recording, which garnered through the decades all the most coveted musical industry awards (the Awit Award, the Aliw Award) and recognitions (from the World Wildlife Fund, the Philippine Department of Tourism, the Upsilon Sigma Phi, and Superbrands (OPA). I also received a whimsical yet highly regarded comicbook fan award, the No Prize, from the late Marvel Comics creator, Stan Lee. As a fledgling Wikipedian, I made my first copy edit as far back as 16 years, 3 months and 16 days ago (as of this writing). I was a President in 2014 of the now-defunct Philippines affiliate, Wikimedia Philippines (WMPH) and represented the Chapter in the annual Wikimedia Conference in Berlin. I am currently a Manila Coordinator for an affiliate Philippines Usergroup, PhilWiki, and is very much engaged as a participant in ESEAP (East South East Asia Pacific) Hub and SWAN (Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network).

I have visited 15 foreign countries and extensively toured 45 cities, not including those of my own home country. I am a Paul Harris Fellow of The Rotary Foundation, and is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Makati Rockwell of Rotary International District 3830. I own at least 90 copyrights of original musical works, globally published under license by Universal Music Publishing of UMG (Universal Music Group). My bio is anthologized in the EPA (Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, ISBN 978-971-85460642), published by the Cultural Center of the Philippines; and among “The Great Jazz Guitarists: The Ultimate Guide” ISBN 978-1-61713-0236, a book by the historian Scott Yanow. I am the recipient of travel grants extended by the Philippines NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) and a 19-year retiree of our country’s largest and oldest corporate institution, the Ayala Group of Companies. Although having not been a very prodigious Wikipedia article creator, I have done countless and, in my view, essential copy edits through the many years in a wide variety of interests and subjects. My best strength as a Wikipedian is my presence to variably stimulate, challenge, call to action and be genuinely involved in the process of our projects as such. The latest initiative by our PhilWiki usergroup is “Wikimedia Loves Folklore”. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Folklore_2022_in_the_Philippines

• NOTE: Questions 1-3 are required for all candidates. // Question 4 & 5 should be answered by those interested in joining the Recognitions subcommittee. // Question 6 & 7 should be answered by those interested in joining the Conflicts Intervention subcommittee. • If you are willing to nominate yourself for both subcommittees, answer all questions.

1. What roles have you served across any Wikimedia projects and affiliates that you think have prepared you for this role?

I have been a Wikimedia Chapter President. I am also actively engaged with the ESEAP Hub.

2. AffCom members need to manage time, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and diverse situations across the global movement. How do you envision managing these?

I was a corporate manager spanning 19 years until my retirement. I have been trained to handle confidential information.

3. Members of AffCom serve on one of two subcommittees: Recognitions OR Conflicts Intervention. Which one of these are you most interested in serving on?

I would much prefer to work in the Recognitions subcommittee.

4. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think makes a group of Wikimedians ready to function together as an affiliate?

The cases for affiliate recognitions vary from country to country. For example, in politically-repressed areas, we cannot expect a large membership of ten or more. In this instance, a token contingent of less may possibly be worked out. We must deal with Recognition with sensitivity, prudence and clarity of the Wikipedia Movement's objective.

5. If you are interested in serving on the Recognitions subcommittee, what do you think are the benefits and responsibilities of functioning as formal affiliates?

The most obvious advantage for formally recognized affiliates is access to grant applications. Affiliates are also provided an expanding horizon of experience in the Wikimedia Movement.

I hold a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Public Administration and a Diploma in Archives Administration. I was a Kindergarten teacher for the duration of six (6) months after my National service, before receiving my appointment with the Civil Service of Ghana to the Records Class. I am Paper Conservator and currently the Head of the Preservation Unit of PRAAD, in Ghana. Advocacy, capacity building, and community organization through volunteers are all things that fascinate me. I joined the movement in 2015. I'm a coordinator for WikiWomen's User Group, and I've also worked as the operations, events, and logistics coordinator for Open Foundation West Africa. I'm also a member of Wikimedia Ghana User Group and the ad hoc Wiki Hour Initiative. I helped organize several Wikimedia projects, including Wiki Needs Girls, which got me interested in volunteerism and ensuring I helped bridge the gender gap, Wiki Loves Women, Arts and Feminism, Wiki Loves Africa, and a digitization project of the Public Records and Archives Administration Department as part of the GLAM project, Wiki4Humanrights, Wiki4Climate, and Wiki4Inclusion, I was also part of the LOC logistics for WikiIndaba in a Accra, and part of Trust and safety for this Year’s Wiki Indaba and a Facilitator at WikiIndaba. I co-facilitated the conversation on Regional and Thematic Hubs during the Global Conversations and facilitated the Prioritization Events for Wiki Women. I've also attended other Wikimedia conferences, including the Wikimedia Diversity Conference, Wikimania, and the recently concluded Wiki Indaba'21, which was held virtually.

I have had instances where people report certain forms of bias or comments, I first try to calm them down. Listen to their grievances, look at the issues and try to be neutral as possible, this happens on Wiki and off Wiki as well and try to proffer a solution that would be beneficial to both parties. Thank you
