--Genppy 15:05, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Recentchangestext edits edit

There's a discussion about MediaWiki:Recentchangestext going on at Meta:Babel#Special:Recentchanges that you would probably be interested in. EVula // talk // 13:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've added a script to your JavaScript file to display the links to Special:Recentchanges on other wikis. You'll need to clear your browser cache (CTRL+R in Firefox) for it to work. Translator questions edit

This is an old subject, that I bring up again. I admit I have not been reading translators-l, or any of the mailing lists, for months so I am not up to date regarding what's happening.

When I asked Bastique, he said the place to ask questions about the testimonials to be translated Fundraising 2007/Testimonials is on the talk of the original texts, so I did that. Then recently I found this: Talk:Fundraising 2007/Testimonials/The ideal Wikipedian - translation. Next time, maybe as many talk pages as possible should be redirected so people don't discuss on several places. Or maybe rather... I find the 'pedias often contain zillions of unnecessary templates, but what if we created a page for discussion of translations, with a subheading for each text. Then on the talk of every translation page we find, in every language, we paste that template, and it links to that central page - you can discuss in your language on "your" page, and go to the central one for input from others including native English speakers and authors of the texts.

I am assuming everyone translates to and from English here... regarding "official" WMF material that is mostly true, though. I really think like doing this, as an experiment. These texts are too old for an experiment though, I should grab texts that are fresh on TR for my experimente. What would you say about it?

Maybe I should write a little essay on how to find help of various kinds when translating. I think I'll do that. // habj 12:59, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wrote several messages at meta talk:Babylon, and maybe you haven't seen this one :

Please

  1. change If none of the above values fits your situation, simply enter a comment, eg.: |da = Your comment into Please use no other word than "wait", "created", "started", "translated", "copyedited", "updated", "finished", or "published" even if these words do not fit exacty your situation
  2. correct "valuse" wich is a misspell of "values"

in Translations/constructor/status. I can't do it myself as this page is protected.

Fundraising 2007 translations edit

Anthere appeared today on the French Wikipedia's village pump, saying, "please, children, help translate" : diff.

She gives a link to Fundraising_2007/Fundraising_FAQ which uses a very simple set of hyperlinks. I'm wondering whether this should be added to "Requests in priority" on Translation requests. What do you think ?

A few other recently initiated translation requests are not using Zocky's machine. Should we modify them to put them into Zocky's machine ?

Teofilo 13:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

’lut, thanks for your notices. Now its translation status page is in that category, as you suggested, so I think it is okay with us.
As for modification, um, please not, while I am a big fun of ZM, though. For the reason, please see the translator-l thread titled "Translation of sitenotice - ok so here are the links ...". Again, merci! --Aphaia 16:32, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising_2007/Donate_form/Translations/source edit

Aphaia,

What exactly are moneybooker and donate by regular mail? Hillgentleman 06:51, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Moneybooker is a company name, managing money transfer - alike PayPal.
Donate by regular mail means sending a cheque to the Foundation. I am not sure if it is a good option for sending money abroad in your country, though.
Wikimedia:资助 may help you understand what they are hopefully. --Aphaia 12:44, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Aphaia, There is another option for sending a cheque. It seems redundant and confusing. Hillgentleman 13:24, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think so .... "Donate via regular mail" is a verb phrase. The value about sending a cheque is a noun phrase (and preceding the ground address of foundation - so it is not a donating "option"). You can access CORE and see how those words are used. If you have a further question, please ask Cary (user:Bastique) or David Strauss for them. They are directly working on that file and capable to answer your all questions hopefully. :)--Aphaia 13:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Volapük Wikipedia edit

Dear Aphaia, I saw that you were one of the first to oppose the proposal for closing the Volapük Wikipedia. Even though most of the votes are still against the proposal, the supporters seem to be gaining momentum; it seems that the time has come to try to find more people who would agree that vo.wiki should remain open and be allowed to grow. Perhaps you'd happen to know other users who would agree? Thanks in advance! --Smeira 03:44, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Simple English Wikiquote edit

Hi. Someone is attempting to close the discussion at Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Simple English Wikiquote and also to close the project (which is active with about 100 pages). Would you have a look? I suspect you know more than I do about usual procedures for closing such discussions. Thanks. --Coppertwig 00:12, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I believe the recent aborted closure of this project by a non-admin and the subsequent controversy that provoked raised questions with broader process-related implications beyond this one discussion. I left some questions on the talk page at Talk:Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Simple English Wikiquote#What's our process.
I understand you're officially just one admin among many, but you are very well-respected and you probably understand meta culture and meta ways probably better than anyone else so I encourage you to chip in.
Thanks, --16:47, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your extensive question list ... and for letting me know. I'm a bit occupied till this weekend, but hopefully give my opinion about that in the next week. Thanks for paying interest and trying to organize the (not existing, I'm afraid) process for this topic. --Aphaia 10:39, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edit week edit

Point taken, but do you want to involve only those who can read English? --Aphaia 14:49, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, I don't but I'd rather translate the ideas (ie. the sections I added) than the whole concept, which frankly, is notaconcept to start with ;-). Important is that we find people who are ready to really carry the idea forward in their community/projects/countries. I think that an appeal to "adapt" is better than an appeal to "translate" if you see my point. Maybe you and I could work on an appeal to translators-l asking for people to find volunteers to actually carry the general messaging in their community/project/country? I'm already working on the chapters, for example. notafish }<';> 15:52, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yep. I myself don't like to ask for translation not-set-in-stone page, but it would have been better to give an English page to other local community ... a campaign of promoting the ideas and encouraging local communities each to develop their own campaign in the same time flame might be what we would like to do actually. --Aphaia 16:40, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fy translations edit

Over the last few days we've translated to Frisian those Fundraising messages that were marked as urgent. The directly visible ones have been applied by a kind and more knowledgable Wikimedian, but what should happen with the others? Fy doesn't seem to have even the framework to show in the status lists, and I don't know the title of the page that explains how this should all come together. I've been pointed to you as someone who could help us. Help appreciated. Aliter 04:18, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I left a comment on Talk:Fundraising 2007/Fundraising FAQ - translation/fy. Please give a look. --Aphaia 04:42, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. But ... how do the Frisian readers get to that Fûnswinnen - Fragen en antwurden page, and to De jefte fan kennis and the contents of Stipeformulier from the menu? Should I translate that menu-fy template somehow, for the Frisian pages that exists? (And in the FAQ I offered the Dutch subtitled version of the video as an alternative; the menu could do that as well.) And then there's the translations on Fundraising 2007/Core interface, but I can't find how to get to that page in any language, so maybe that isn't up, yet?

Getting it all together appears to be more complicated than the actual translating was. Aliter 17:51, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It seems like the process we are using is currently this: As you can see on the bottom of wikimedia:Donate there is a language bar linking to all the translated versions, the Fy links we will be added to that. People can clink on the English menu links, which will then link to the other language version (as shown on wikimedia:Fundraising FAQ). That's what it seems like now, it might change soon.
"And then there's the translations on Fundraising 2007/Core interface, but I can't find how to get to that page in any language, so maybe that isn't up, yet?" What do you mean? If you are going to translate that page (please :-)), fill out the following: [snip] Ohhh, you already translated it and it's not on the Fundraising C.O.R.E. yet?
Thank you for helping us out with translations, it is greatly appreciated! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 22:27, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's a week since that tuesday now, and the Frisian Wikipedia still ends up on an English Donate page. If people use the English bar to get to Appeal or to FAQ, they might notice there's a Frisian translation there, but even if they do see the language bar at the bottom of Donate before they struggled through the English, they won't find Frisian there. Is there a developer who can be seduced into solving this with, say, an article about chocolate? Aliter 01:18, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for letting me know that, Aliter. I asked people who concern again for taking care of updating. Your patience will be appreciated. --Aphaia 14:32, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dispute edit

Hello Aphaia, I'd like to ask you, why was I rejected? I mean, I think I was put at an unfair position because Steinninn was one user I had conflict with, I had and have many other references from the Chechen wikipedia, though aren't so much active now on Meta wiki. And a few other users but aren't avaliable. And those situations that I had, Steinninn was involved in, yet he still received an account on Metawiki. I feel I was treated unfairly for this decision. --Girdi 21:06, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aside from brushing him off so quickly, you deleted my vote in his favour as "anonymous". I suppose technically on Wikimedia I am anonymous, but on Wikipedia I am not, and that's how I signed my vote. And I'm not a socketpuppet either, just an acquaintance of a guy who asked me for a reference. You really should give him more of a chance to prove himself. —Firespeaker 21:21, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sumimasen. Anata wa nihonjin desuka? Shitsuri shimasu, boku wa kono ga wakarimasen. :( --Girdi 21:25, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

The reason you are rejected is, just you are the person who causes the disruption on the above. You are not globally trusted. Besides Steinninn's opinion, I got another opinion privately, which is also negative for you. Thanks for your understanding. --Aphaia 21:59, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just don't think it is fair how Steinninn being involved in those situations gets an account and not me. Would it make a difference if I continued translated on Meta Wiki in Chechen and such, or am I Scared for life bearing negative things in the past? It seems you focus more on my negative attributes then my positives. --Girdi 22:38, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
And as I stated, you had two negative opinions about me, yet you had two positives also. One was from BiT but he didnt have a Meta account, he knows me very personally from Wikipedia IS and such. I also had some refernces from Chechen wikipedia, where most of my edits and activity are. Also, you had FireSpeaker here, and you ignored his comment because he didnt have a Wikimeta account but he is very active on Wikipedia in English. I am sorry, I Am just very disappointed how my commitment and contributions are not even appreciated and instead are looked down upon or being ignored, I was going to work on many translations on metawiki to prove to you that I am changed and learnt truly from my mistaeks and negatives in the past, but I am quite afraid that this work will be for nothing and my negatives in the past will still be used as my disadvantage. --Girdi 22:46, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

en:Daijō-kan, en:Gemmei, etc. edit

I think I noticed that you were an administrator, which means (I guess) this is appropriately addressed to you or someone like you? If not you, who?

ALARM: Most of the citations in articles I've created over the past year seem to have suddenly turned RED ... not only in this specific article but in several others I quickly checked. What happened? I'm guessing that this appears to be a sudden systemic change -- an error not attributable to me? something bigger than me?
In each of the articles I checked, the consolidated in-line citations have been "named" with the first letter of the author's last name plus the relevant page number; ergo -- I've NOT created a name a mere integer ... and, although there has been no problem prior to 27 December 2007/17:00 (EST) .. everything has suddenly gone awry. --en:User:Ooperhoofd/User:Ooperhoofd22:48, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah, yes -- sigh. I'm pleased that this is now another PROBLEM SOLVED
Now I guess I've learned the hard way what I need to do when I'm suddenly startled. No worries. This problably happens more often than I have any way to guess. An unknown person sent me this message:
This was a site-wide error, now fixed. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#What is this crap? "Cite error"? You may have to purge your cache however to see the fix.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:12, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
My adminship on English Wikipedia? Hmmm it was genuinely technical and temporal one, and even if I were an admin, admin on Wikipedia is no chief-of-editor or so, so I feel sorry but it is not an appropriate place. Perhaps do you feel comfortable to discuss the issue on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan, where we discuss how we can improve Japan related articles. Aph.

Volapük as good publicity? edit

Hi Aphaia. In the Proposals for closing projects/Radical cleanup of Volapük Wikipedia, you mentioned that a certain Japanese discussion group had bad things to say about Volapük. Note that there are many more places that say bad things about Wikipedia in general, without Volapük. But I wanted to point out the possibility that Volapük may also be good publicity for the WMF. As an example, I copied here the proposed script for a little (2 or 3 minutes) program on the Vükiped for the Dutch TV channel RTL-4 (a reporter contacted me and suggested this). Of course it's a short item in a small program; but maybe it's more important than the Japanese group you mentioned. It's in Dutch, unfortunately (but someone here can certainly translate it), and it's not definitive -- I myself want to change several things in it -- but note that it is positive to the WMF and their goals. Perhaps you could mention it in PR committee, so that you people could discuss the possibility that a large vo.wp may actually be good PR for the WMF, if it is used well? --Smeira 11:57, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

geachte heer Meira,

(Steenbergen of andere volapükist?)

Meta:Requests for adminship/Adambro 2 edit

Hi Aphaia. I must ask that you take the time to reconsider your position on my request for adminship. Whilst I appreciate your view that my "interpretation of meta inclusion policy is different from the commonly accepted one" I don't accept this to be the case nor do I feel it justified to oppose my request on these grounds.

My understanding policy requires little interpretation, I think both relevant policies are clear. The project scope doesn't cover historical interest as far as I'm aware and the inclusion policy requires that only freely licensed material is used. All my efforts with regards to deletion discussions have been attempts to ensure compliance with these polciies and I would urge you to respect this over what you perceive as to be the "commonly accepted" interpretation of policies. As I've said, the inclusion policy is pretty clear about free material and so I do not consider it appropriate to oppose a request for adminship on the grounds that the user is attempting to comply with said policies. If the policy doesn't reflect the feeling amongst the community about what should be included then don't blame me for this and instead campaign for a change in policy.

Thanks for your time and I'd be happy to discuss this further with you if you have any points you'd like to raise. Adambro 23:11, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

You may want to change the page User:Aphaia/Wikimedia_Projects from Category:Wikimedian matrices to [[Category:Wikimedian matrices|{{PAGENAME}}]] so it sorts right in the category. It's currently under "U" for User instead of "A" for Aphaia. Thanks! ~Kylu (u|t) 03:50, 26 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Policies in ML edit

Thanks Aphaia. Yes I would like to translate those policies to ML. There are three other translators/editors who might also be able to help. User:Jyothis, User:Shijualex and User:Sugeesh. But first we need a list of pages that must be translated - in priority order - to any new language. (PS: I don't feel offended.. LOL :) .. ) --Jacob 09:28, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good point. Basically it appears on Translation requests thanks to the category Category:Translations in priority but it doesn't fit your purpose completely I'm afraid. Can you give us Transcom some days? I think I can give a list of priority order this week.
By the way, do you subscribe translator-l? If you are continuing Wikimedia translation, it will be helpful: to keep in touch with other translators, to catch the trend and so on. Cheers, --Aphaia 09:32, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey, sorry I couldn't find that list you mentioned in my talk page. Could you please help? BTW, I translated Translation_requests/WMF/Home to Translation_requests/WMF/Home/ml. It is being proof-read. --Jacob 21:17, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Updates edit

This diff has been incorporated in Translation requests/WMF/നമ്മുടെ സംരംഭങ്ങള്‍. DO let me know if I need to add the rest of the recent changes. I havent read thru due to the lack of time. Will do a review soon. --Jyothis 18:22, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jyothis, shortly, please include those changes, if any. The major latest change is on Commons and I don't see any other changes, but you can get them easily from diff the current version and the one you had used as your source.
We are trying to put the information necessary to track such changes into the translation templates. Sorry for the current inconvenience, and thanks for your patience. --Aphaia 04:50, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

New babel templates edit

Hello Aphaia. I have been working on a new version of the babel template system called {{user language}}. You can see a comparison in my sandbox. I have been discussing with users in #wikimedia-translation and elsewhere, and they have been very favorable so far. Do you have any comments or suggestions? —{admin} Pathoschild 18:07:29, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for poking me, It looks good. I prefer however the coloring of Babel ... or at least a bit more dusky and soft coloring. The color assigned to 4 level in your new system pierce my eyes. --Aphaia 01:30, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
How about these? I prefer a progressive colour scheme (eye-piercing extra :)).

Mystery about your deletion edit

Hello :) The recent discussion made me want to solve a mystery about this old deletion. Could you tell me where the "request" was? Mulukhiyya 03:55, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is not public, sorry. Interaction occurred privately. --Aphaia 04:46, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
  1. So, you are the only sysop that fully knows about it?
  2. I know these two ([1] and [2]) were requested from yourself, but for what purpose? Is this private, too?
Mulukhiyya 11:28, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the deleted revisions (if you want to see, I can mail you it), I apparently erased my input from those pages. Probably the page first you mentioned was deleted for that purpose: then I decided, so I recall now, away from the all Japanese project. It was just the moment Japanese Wikipedia left bullying for me and my late husband and gave me no response to my request of deletion and restoration which I made in a formal legal style with my real name and residential address. Eventually I came back them though. I think the further information cannot be shared with the person whose identification is unclear for me and I haven't met. Thanks. --Aphaia 12:31, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think you explained about "removal" rather than "deletion". Sadly I can't see any reason why the patch-up is needed (or allowed) for the past and now. Anyway, I won't ask anymore. Thank you for the answers. Maybe it has become a bit more clear (and corrected my memory). Mulukhiyya 13:03, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, there seems no mention of the purpose of those "two". Mulukhiyya 13:34, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for understanding. As for your question if it is allowed, it is. I understand it within my right to vanish. If you want to leave a project entirely, you can request for deletion by courtesy any time. It would be not a nod for deletion but renaming but it is still your right, unless the community need to keep it as is. As for the deletions you mentioned, it has been very long before so now I don't mind if you request for undeletion but I assure you you will find no substantial differences from the existing versions. --Aphaia 13:40, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Edit tab text on WMF wiki edit

I think we should delete wmf:MediaWiki:Edit, so it shows "edit" instead of "edit (login required)". The reason is, if a person is not logged in (i.e. they can't edit) they will see "view source", and if a person is logged in (i.e. can edit) there is no point in reminding them about they should stay logged in to edit. Cheers, Huji 18:11, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Point taken, but would we like to give a more thought. Since if they cannot sign in, they still cannot see even the source. "View source" might also need to be changed? --Aphaia 18:34, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
They can still view the source, I think. Cbrown1023 talk 22:47, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Translation requests/WMF/Our projects/nl edit

Hi Aphaia,

I made a beta version in Dutch and added an extra category to mark it as translated.
I guess a better way is to use another template so it comes in the category for proofread/correction or whatever.
Can you explain me how, please? Templates are one of my weakest points unfortunately, I'm happy that I can read them ;-).
Greetings and thanks in advance, your would-be translator Patio 13:21, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Patio,
You can change the status at the template put on the top of Translation requests/WMF/Our projects/nl, now there Dutch version is indicated as "nl /Nederlands (needs updating)". Since the current "beta" version seems not to be updated yet, it would be better for us not to call it "translated" or "proofreading", since it needs more update & translation in my opinion.
If you would like to merge your user subpage version and the current one, please let me or any other meta admins know that.
If you have further questions about this "status" template, ask User:Pathoschild for information (He created it so has the best knowledge). Cheers,--Aphaia 13:50, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Translation req/OurProjects2006/tr edit

Thanks for a lot you, too. But you haven't publish that translation. Er, can't you edit the "species" and "commons" links to /wiki/Türkçe? Thanks for a lot, and I dont want to bother you. Never worry, OK? Thanks.

Hi Emroski, thanks for your message.
I realized I didn't make so much (see the diff), while I imported your edition from meta, I just removed "pre" tag from your version. Currently there is no way to add those lang specific pages to Commons and Species (see Wikimedia:Template:OurProjects2006) but I like your suggestion. Could you please make it up as new matrix? Perhaps we can work on a new template, say, Template:OurProjects2008 perhaps? Then, if we give a value, people get their language own page, otherwise led to the English page or somewhere else. --Aphaia 15:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

requested translation edit

For personal reasons (and, specifically, because of your repetitive personal attacks, as well as judgmental and ungrounded remarks) I have no wish to cooperate with you at the moment, nor participate in a subproject under your guidance. Thanks for understanding. Also, I have other things to do on Wikis, apart from my regular academic duties. The next time you try to recruit somebody to your cause, you might want to refrain from calling them mean or, in fact, from using any insults whatsoever. Simple assuming good faith might help as well, and I would like to encourage you to consider it occasionally. I hope you find this feedback useful. Cheers. Pundit 05:35, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pundit is very stubborn, manipulative, and will argue incessantly and edit-war when he doesn't get his way, even over the most trivial of matters. I had this problem with him over the "Chocolate Thai" article on Wikipedia and I let him win the edit war over including such silly information on Cannabis, despite the lack of consensus for it.
From the diffs he cited, he subtly calls you a liar ("blatant... diversion from truth, let's say") then throws a tantrum for being called on it. Most likely he will characterize this as a personal attack, hence I refuse to engage him.
Characterizing being called mean as a "personal attack" is beyond ridiculous, his academic duties are irrelevant here, and his ego is ginormous. Zenwhat 21:47, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Category SV edit

Hi Aphaia. I noticed you added Category:SV to our automagic template {{Wikimedia Sverige}}. Your edit made it so that all the talkpages belonging to Wikimedia Sverige automatically ended up in category SV. So I moved the category to the right sub template so only article pages (pages in main space) will end up in category SV. (You could not have known since I had only documented that template in Swedish, sorry about that.)

Also, since Category:Wikimedia Sverige is a sub category of Category:SV then I think perhaps it is not necessary to mark all Wikimedia Sverige pages with category SV? Or are there "technical reasons" to have all pages in one language directly in the main category for the language? (I can imagine it can be used to do some automatic stuff or statistics etc.)

You can respond to me right here since I will watch this talk page.

--David Göthberg 09:28, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah point taken. Thanks for taking care of it. While personally I prefer to tag all pages with lang category, I'm happy with your solution. --Aphaia 21:23, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
