Language templates edit

Hello. These language templates are intented to easy the life of translators by reducing repetitive work. I have just started this internationalization project, so I'm still working on it and the documentation isn't finished yet (actually, there are no documentation yet). See one (very simple) example at my personal page. I hope to be able to show that this have many possibilities. Bye --surueña 17:07, 2005 Apr 15 (UTC) PS: I'm curious, how do you found my templates?

Thank you for your quick reply. Thanks of your page, I could understand better than before. But still I can't imagine where we will use such "list of language" ... we mostly pick some of them and refer it like navigation templates in some pages like Translation requests.
Could we use your template, specially "Template:Lang def" without lang variables? In most cases we use only lang code and in the second frequent cases we need the name of their local names like that (e.g. Wikimedia Quarto).
If you are interested in i18n, would you like to improve some multilingualisation pages? Have you already browsed pages in Category:Multilingualism? Your proposals for improvement will be appreciated.
By the way The place I found your activities are here ;-) Cheers, --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 17:15, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Template:List of Languages is only an example of what can be done using the language templates (although I think it could be used for something useful). For another example see the translation menus of my personal pages.
The templates of language names could be used directly in any page, but "Template:Lang def" requires two paramenters. I don't understand why you want only one parameter. I want to modify this template to "hide" unneeded translations (when the name and the translation are equal. See Template:Lang (translation) - es (es) and Template:Lang (translation) - es (en)), I didn't made it yet because they would be harder to understand.
Yes, I've browsed some of these multilingualisation pages and make some minor changes, but now I'm mainly working on my language templates. I hope it could be helpful to the projects. Thank you for your interest. Cheers --surueña 14:12, 2005 Apr 16 (UTC)

Problematic pictures on Commons edit

Hello Aphaia ! Could you please have a look at commons:Category:Rune alphabet which contains 26 pictures of runes. All these pictures seem to have been copied on :ja:wikipedia from ja:ルーン文字. On :ja, I can't read the picture description page - my japanese isn't what it should be :) So question is, are we sure that these pictures are PD or free license ? and, do we know where they are coming from ? Thanks ! villy 15:47, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

None of licence inforamtion were available on picture description pages. They were uploaded by ja:user:Peehyoro Acala. I can't help you further from here; I haven't been happy there because of rants; one of those trolls demanded me to enclose my privacy life on request for comments! So you could understand friendly I would like not to be involved into it anymore. Thanks. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 16:57, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi, are you administrator at meta? At the Spanish Wikipedia we have a frequent spam from www.spkpfh.de and would like it to be included in the spam list. Could you do that? or else, where should I ask for that? Thanks in advance.

The translation of Quarto vol 3 is undergoing. Now we have two pages translated. Cheers. --Ascánder 19:27, 2 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your translation, back to another topic, I'm sorry to hear that. Could you show one of diff of those spams, before it was posted and just after. Cheers, --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 20:35, 2 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Here is one of those examples: [1] As the spamer complains about lack of freedom and things like that we choose to keep the text without the link once, where he first added it, here, but our conclusion is that he tries to drain traffic to his site. --Ascánder 02:59, 3 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Ah supposingly he wanted so but I'm afraid it is the case to list it on the list, because we list there spams assumingly from a bots, ten or twenty times or more, like this way [2]. Can you block his IP address(es)?
I suppose it is ok for him to stop his rank. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 03:18, 3 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
No, fortunately, it does not seems to come from a bot. There are about 100 erased tries (about 50 this month). He seems to use a dynamic IP, because this weekend he was blocked from 10 different IPs. Many users help reverting, but my guess was that if he can not mention his site, he'll soon get bored. Anyway, thanks for your concern. --Ascánder 03:39, 3 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
No problem. 50 is quite many. If he comes again, please let me know, I'll consider to list it up temporarily. But please notice it the site doesn't work suddently, it needs to take a time before working. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 04:03, 3 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

??? = edit

Hi Aphaia,

I am not sure what is the origin of your hostile attitude to me in the comment on my talk-page. I have put "big" tags before comments, not votes, and in fact the anonymous user who has made them is me when I am not logged-in.

I don't know where you get the idea of "bugging" or "forcing" about the portal - Yes, I had started a second vote, but there is logic reasoning for this which I can tell you if you really want to know. I didn't use "big" tags before my comments there either. There was some irritation in method though, with the domination of en: and un willingness for compromise and rather for the voting which is decidedly "un-wiki" as it disenfranchises the minority each time rather than a middle solution halfway. It is also seen as unfair because "Raul654", who has had issues with on other times on en.wikipedia which he was censured by other admins for improper behaviour to me, he "drums up support" among English Wikipedia who is irritated at change of wikipedia.org to multilingual portal and wants less languages display because alleged "confusion". As you can see this page has now been protected and nobody accepts any inputs, so updates even adding Wikipedias which have reached certain number cannot do anymore without the bugging of an admin who generally is busy in other things. For a while updated on "temporary" page, but is never fixed to 'live' version so has gave up.

Status in these Wikipedias of having only one real user no admins, passed over first time by Ant "await other opinion", is annoyed and urgent now that successive have been ignored - not even commented - successively by stewards checked Andre Engels .

I am suprised and upset that the threaten to ban me from meta, and for what? This insertion of "big" tag around what is seen by me as the urgent thing?

Please in the future, try to consider maybe what others is thinking when they action.

On May's Friday the 13th power supply troubles knocked majority of Wikimedia servers. As all of database servers had dual power supplies, they were the only ones to survive the crash. Though, main network switch, core file server and nearly all web and cache servers failed to function. Proper site recovery took more than one hour, with some resulting side effects (some hardware needs replacement).

Just read on the wikipedia mail list:

Help!!!
Test pages for Võro and Scots language Wikipedia http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Test-wp/fiu-vro/ http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Test-wp/sco/ are in danger!
It was suggested in Wikipedia-list that we should create these pages before creating real Wikipedia in our languages.
Now user of Wikimedia Aphaia threats to erase our work and has already destroyed Scots test page!!

Is this true?!

Angela herself replied:

Something's gone very wrong when playing chess on the wiki (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Chess_championship>) is acceptable but creating a demo Wikipedia in a new language is not.
If this does not survive VfD, and you want a temporary small wiki, you're welcome at <http://scratchpad.wikicities.com/>. For a longer term Wikicity, you need consensus within Wikipedia that this language can *not* exist within Wikimedia.
Angela.

So, mind your own affairs chap! If you don't want new wikipedias, that does not give you the right to erase other people's work! Caesarion 08:14, 20 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't destroy "Scot test page". It exists. I just put a deletion tag because it was alrady listed on Meta:Requests for deletion, this tag should be added on the article and it is fair to give a chance to people in purpose of advocation.
  • Angela said already: for temporal wiki, you can lodge Scratchpad. "For a longer term", like toki pona it should be clear "within Wikipedia that this language can *not* exist within Wikimedia." At any rate meta is not a host site for "testing wiki". --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 10:17, 20 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bulgarian translation of the Board election edit

Hello Aphaia, Bulgarian Wikipedia have very VERY small community, maybe some 10 active wikipedians, who meet the requirements to vote. Everyone of us knows english and can read the pages on meta:, so I don't think we (and you) really need this translation. Regards, (DCLXVI) DCLXVI 14:40, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Okay, thank you for your notice. You need no translation perhaps ... so would you like to put a link from Recentchanges or Community portal? Cheers,
Done. DCLXVI 16:14, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Election notice edit

Are you talking about this : [4]? Because I don't understand what you're reproaching me. Sorry Weft 15:24, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply and sorry for lack of information, I talked about your edit on En version[5], not Fr (and your translating) version. I appreciate your translation of course, but for En (and original version) I feel the necessity [without reversion from vandalism] to keep it from other's hand than organization team, specially after it was set-in-stone. Hoping this clarifies your question. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 15:29, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you, it clarifies my question. I understand and I apologize. I thought it just concerns a template variable and doesn't affect the contents, I just fixed something I've changed in the template, I'll use the talk page in the future. Sorry. Weft 15:36, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I know. You did what you indicate on the above and it was no problem. I would like to only avoid confusion. Thank you for your understanding. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 16:10, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Arabic Translation edit

Hello there,

As my Bulgarian colleague said, we have the same problem in our Wikipedia, anyway I won't promise anything but I'll try me best to do so. Sunny regards from the Arabic Wikipedia--Oxydo 10:34, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply. I'll try to prepare clearer note. if you would like to tell me what part of message was incomprehensible, it would be very helpful for me. (Perhaps "Village pump", if so, it is a general discussion page on a wiki, here Meta:Babel and on English Wikipedia, Wikipedia:Village pump. If you have no equivalent, please put it in the place which you preferable.

[suddently reminded meta has "a list of VPs on various Wikipedias" ...] Anyway I'll try to speak more clearly when I ask you something again. Cheers, --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 10:36, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Finally made the Arabic translation. ar:ويكيبيديا:انتخابات مجلس إدارة مؤسسة ويكيميديا Take care,--Oxydo 22:06, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

xlation hu edit

Hello, I'll be away for tomorrow (and was gone today) but I'll try to get it done next week unless some kind local soul does it first. :) --grin@huwiki

Thank you for your kindly notice, and have a good weekend! --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 20:24, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

お詫び edit

「ミュンヘン」についての発言については、軽い気持ちで書いてしまった地口で、揶揄する意図はまったくございませんでした。そのように受け取られたとしたら、大変申し訳なく思います。この場でお詫び申し上げるとともに該当個所の発言を撤回させていただきます。大変申し訳ございませんでした。--汲平 09:03, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
早々のご対応をありがとうございます。--Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 09:23, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Not in this case ... :) edit

I am interested in Japanese culture: as a linguist for a language-isolata; for two-religion culture; for stable three alphabets in usage (hmm... may you find for me (i.e., where to try to find) some data about history of adoption of three alphabes in Japanese? it is interesting for me because of unstable two-alphabets usage in Serbian language in the last 50-60 years); Ainu people and language; Japanese adoption of Chinese culture; Japanese spirituality; (I was training Judo as a kid :) )... But, in this case mythology was not my primary goal (other guy made the article). It is very interesting to me that people are working on different languages just to show that it is possible to make a little step in communication with others without English ;) Lingua franca is a good thing, but we can work together (with or) without mediation of en: (i mean en.wikipedia), too :) --Millosh 12:46, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

And thanks for welcome on ja: :) --Millosh 12:46, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

思いますに、ブロック(だけ)はいささか拙速だったのではないでしょうか? -- NiKe 15:59, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

--Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 16:33, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

ブロック自体は妥当であったとしても、周囲に与える印象を考えますと、ブロックを実施するタイミングはもう少し遅い方が良かったのではないかと思いますが……。姑息かなあ(笑) -- NiKe 00:25, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Esperanta traduko edit

I was translating pages about elections, I saw your message so I did this. Is that OK ? Pictures are missing and I did'nt find the french version on the site. --Arno Lagrange  07:26, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for inconvinience and thank you for your translation! Perfect, I'll ask someone to list it on whitelist as soon as possible.
As for Wikimania sponsors, pictures are not here (they are adverisement anyway ...) and French version is not here but on the website. Perhaps you felt cozier working on the website, if I recall correctly you have already an account. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 07:40, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Tell me please on what website the pages are to be seen. If it is on wikimediafoundation my account was created but nether worked and has never been fixed. We had some correspondance about with Anthere and with Angela but without any result. And about candidatures' translation I was waiting on the french version before I provide the esperanto one for Anthere. --Arno Lagrange  02:59, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Je viens de comprendre que le site de Wikimania s'est dédoublé en meta:Wikimania et wikimania. Je m'y perds bien et je ne sais plus ce qui a déjà traduit et pas. Et comment les visiteurs feront pour savoir où se trouvent les informations les plus à jour ? Il faudrait tout rassembler et ridiriger sur wikimania --Arno Lagrange  08:22, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your latest enourmous translation. Well, yeah, things are a big complicated. Oh sorry for my rudeness, it is very kind of you to help Ant to prepare her statement in French. Nous te remercions vraiment.
As for Wikimedia Foundation Wiki, (WMF) you seem to have no account. There is no ArnoLagrange. So if you would like to help maintenance of this wiki, please request for an account. It would be a nice idea to set up esperanto Home page for the WMF site (not so many international organisations have their homepage in esperanto, I assume).
As for Wikimania, yes, there are two workareas on meta and on the Wikimania website. And you have accounts on both sites. I remember well you set up the esperanto pages. But for convinience on coopeoration with other editors, we always do translation mainly on Meta, not on the site, and I encourage everyone to do so, if I am asked. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 08:40, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Merci beaucoup pour les réponses. Je tâcherai de faire de mon mieux pour suivre les règles de travail. --Arno Lagrange  07:36, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Images and speedy deletion edit

The image Image:Motor-nail-in-horseshoe.gif even has a copivio in the image which clearly says © 2001 the images are unused and from here. Sorry, experienced from commons I had no nerve to check the other one from that user. I advise you to go through his contributions to find further copivio. --Paddy 13:09, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your information, and even copyvio images are not candidates for speedy unless already transwikied, if I recall correctly. For differences of rules, don't mind, I really appreciate your maintenance work. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 13:11, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I did not know that. I just saw the copivio and acted like on commons or de respectively. The other sysop may than decide if it is the case or not. I do not like obvious cases to linger around for too long. --Paddy 14:00, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Stimmt ;-) If I recall correctly, not only de but also en wp has same rule ... and confesso, I prefer your way. you are pushing me to propose a rule revision right now ;-) --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 14:11, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I am not so familiar with meta as you can see but maybe it is a good way to get rid of stuff faster. I have seen in the log that there is a lot of vandalism. The images have not been used anywhere so I supposed that it was a stupid joke + copivo. You decide what you do :-) knuddel --Paddy 15:29, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Spam request edit

Thank you for taking care of that (flats h1 ru) so promptly. I was, however, able to add this link back when conducting a test in my userspace. Is that because the effect of the blacklisting is not that immediate, or is that because the test was in the userspace, not in the main space? Again, thanks.—Ezhiki 19:03, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It works not immidiately, if I recall correctly. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 19:36, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. The reason I thought it was immediate was that the Spam blacklist intro states so ("changes should take effect immediately"). I guess "should" is the key word here :). Perhaps it would be wise to change that phrase. Anyway, I'll try this out again tomorrow (mainly out of curiosity).—Ezhiki 19:44, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Response-Enterprise edit

Aphaia, I am responding to your question. You asked me what enterprise has to do with meta-wikimedia? We are a group working on a Knowledge management (KM) project and are evaluating the WIKIMEDIA site as part of the knowledge management objectives. Enterprise is a term used in KM, ENTERPRISES use KM concepts and WIKIMEDIA is a KM tool. - K

Election Notice DE edit

Hi! I don't quite understand your edit to the german election notice [6]. If I understood the english version correctly in order to participate in the election a user needs 400 edits on the projekt from which he cast his vote. I believe I got that right in my translation and after your edit the sentence doesn't make any sense. --Deprifry 19:01, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)--Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 02:26, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your remark. You understand correctly. Sorry for my edit, we'll retrieve your version. --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 20:08, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I've updated all the Spanish local copies. I have a question about how the election officers will check votes at the local projects. Will you delegate to the local sysops? In that case will there be a notice to them? Thanks. --Ascánder 01:15, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your update! We'll have a meeting in this weekend. Then we confirm how things will go. I presume every vote will be counted by automatically (Tim Starling is working on that), but anyway I'll inform you after the meeting. Cheers, --Aphaia | Translate Election | ++ 02:26, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

ja:Wikipedia:コメント依頼を書き直してみました。私は形を見ながら直して行かないと上手く書けないところがありますので。(実は、Aphaiaさんのコメントを見落としていたというのが本当ですが:D)
