Editori accademici
Ciao. GIO(beware of the moose) 05:08, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

editDo you happen to know where to find archives of expanded ur1.ca URLs from around 2011-2013 (when this URL shortener was frequently used for WMF Twitter accounts)? From spot-checking these search results, it appears that the URLTeam releases only cover later timespans from around 2014 on. Recover my account on TranslateWiki.net
editDear Nemo bis, I have a unified login User:JogiAsad, using that account I had edited on TranslateWiki.net as well, but when I go to translatewiki I'm not logged in. It usually happens that if a user is logIn on any Wiki with unified login id, and switches from one wiki to another no new login is required because of Unified login/integrated account, i.e, if we login on Gmail and then switches to Google drive, Google Play or any other Google service we are not being asked to Login again. User:JogiAsad is my unified login so when I am logged in on Wikipedia, or meta.wiki and then visit or switches to translatewiki its not logging me automatically and when I clicks the login insert Username JogiAsad but I do not remember what is my passpord (pwd) on translatewiki, please help me to recover my account so I may continue translations contributions using my account and username. Your censorship at the discussion of your research
editI left a comment for you after your warning at my personal discussion page. Anyway I would kindly ask you to read my contributions before you do delete them. I got the impression that you are not very interested to investigate more profoundly in your researches. What is your real motive? Platonykiss (talk) 08:36, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Dear Nemo. Don't you worry about edit-wars, it is nothing personal, because I do not know anyone at Italian wikipedia, otherwise I would have refused the requests by other users to look what is going wrong there (because you need to act and intermediate as a neutral person not involved with anyone in question). I first studied researches here, including yours, before I checked what administrators are up there to do, and I was quite surprised to see so many irregularities at once.
- Do you really think this was just a coincidence and that it is not connected with your observations? Of course, I would never try anonymous edits against aggressive "wikipedians" (simply because it is a waste of time!), but in case administrators exclude you without even warning you (which is definitely against the rules!), you leave users no other choice (and grant them, by the way, to endure the most frustrating experience possible). I think we need to do something against those who just quote rules without having them ever read themselves (why quoting rules to others if you do not respect them anyway?).
- But I suspect, you are one of those users who find qualitative investigations "unproductive". Nevertheless, this is your point of view and it does not provide you with a justification to delete my comment. You can leave this to users like Vito who has a very obvious motive, or better to me, because it is in my responsibility. In your case just advice others, what you think is more appropriate to do. At least, that would have been my way. But I would not delete anything, definitely not in this case. Platonykiss (talk) 10:26, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Stesso problema! Grazie

Next steps for the wish “confirmation prompt for the rollback link”
editHello, a while ago you participated in a feedback round about a proposal how accidental clicks on the rollback link could be avoided. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and ideas!
Looking at the feedback and the rollback situation in different wikis, the development team decided how to approach this wish: As a default, most wikis won’t have a confirmation. But users who wish to have one, can enable it in their preferences, which will add a confirmation prompt to the rollback link on the diff page and on the list pages. The prompt won’t be a pop-up, but an inline prompt like for the thanks confirmation. You can read more about the planned solution and what influenced this decision on the project page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 09:43, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

--Elyparker (talk) 00:29, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
A conference in Milano
editHi Nemo,
We briefly met in Esino Lario two years ago, so you may not remember me, but I am part of French Wiktionary community. Well, sorry, I can't write Italian so it will be in English.
I contact you about an academic conference in Milano. Your page on Meta mentions this city but I am not sure if you still live there.
So, the conference will be in French, with the title Dictionnaires et culture numérique dans l’espace francophone and it will be October 16-17 in the Dipartimento di Scienze della Mediazione Linguistica e di Studi Interculturali - Università degli Studi di Milano.
I think it could be great to have a look at this conference. Wiktionary is mentioned in two titles and may be discussed in several talks. Do you manage enough French to enjoy it? I am not sure I can travel to Milano easily but I may try. Lyokoï, another wiktionarian, is also interested to go. We may find a sponsor so it can be an opportunity to met again, if you are still in Milano.
What do you think about that? Noé (talk) 06:15, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer! Wikimania was great, but also kind of strange for me, because I realize French Wiktionary is a project with a community when other wiktionary still do not have one. We have a monthly meeting in Lyon since 2015 with an average of eight people when contributors of other Wiktionary may have never met colleagues. Well, we are still very motivated but it's kind of intimidating to be the edge of the Wiktionary movement.
- The location is Montanelli, as mentioned in the program but there is not a lot of information in the website about the place. I may write directly to the organizers. If I can flight there, I'll write to Wikimedia Italia, it could be a good opportunity to meet. Thanks for the hosting offer, but as we don't speak Italian, it may be better to find someone interested to speak with us in French or English. Feel free to ping anyone in Milan that could be interested to meet Wiktionarians or French contributors Noé (talk) 06:57, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

editHello. Please refrain from edit warring, as you seem to be doing at Wikimedia Forum. Although I do agree with you on this, that it's unnecessary to link the article there and possibly a DENY issue, that should be discussed on pages (Talk:Wikimedia Forum, possibly, or in the section in question) and not in the edit summaries of reverts. I wanted to let you know that this year's survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until November 11. You can learn more on the survey page.
You can vote on proposals from November 20 to December 2. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won't send out a separate reminder to you about that. We look forward to your participation. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello. The template is not English-only; it's explicitly there under Template:TNT. Considering that it is a WMF message, and they placed it at the top of the page (as with Stewards), I think it is probably best to keep it at the top but move it below the header. Thoughts? Best regards, Vermont (talk) 12:00, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- It's not translated in many languages. It was probably placed at the top just because it's easiest to put it there without editing any translate wikitext. It doesn't fit at the top, it makes more sense in the body. Nemo 12:31, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi guys, I am seeing this discussion after undoing the move of {{2FA-required}} as I was coming over to leave a further explanation. It is consistently placed in that location on the page across all user groups that require it; if one is moving, they all should be but as Vermont said, it was WMF that placed it there. The reason it is not translated in many languages is because until recently, we were translating the exact same text on 10 different pages rather than using a translatable template. Any translation help with the template is appreciated. ~riley (talk) 15:57, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Page moves for Project Grant proposals
editHi Nemo, I've noticed you have moved a number of Project Grant proposal pages recently. While some of these moves have been useful (such as addressing typos or noting the applicant in the pagetitle), others have been more subjective (such as this one or this one). The title of a proposal and how it is organized should generally be left up to the applicant(s). If you'd like to suggest a title change to the applicant(s), you may, but a decision to move their own proposal should be at their discretion. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 20:21, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
- I agree and I generally try to not move pages unless necessary. Leaving a page titled "Qrpedia" which has no mention of Qrpedia, however, feels like unnecessary cruelty towards the creator. Nowadays on Meta-Wiki many users don't have the permissions to move pages, so the game is stacked against those who make a typo on first attempt.
- The ISUR move was sort of a mistake, I thought there was another one with the base page "ISUR". I thought the creators would not mind or would (ask to) reverse if necessary, but I can apologise/ask directly if you feel that's better. Nemo 20:36, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
- The permissions issue around page moving is unfortunate— I would prefer applicants have more autonomy around their own proposals as well. That said, if a proposal title is unclear to you, please communicate this to the applicant directly so they are able to respond, and decide whether or not choose a new title or accept a suggestion for a specific change. As for these two cases ([2], [3]), please request an admin for these to be reverted back and then reach out to the applicants as you've suggested. Thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 21:43, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

If you are interested after reading the documentation, do apply at SRGP. Thanks.Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 08:54, 4 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I saw the discussion. If there's a desire to remove the "abuse filter helper" group and reduce redundancy, I'm happy to apply and abide by the consensus. Otherwise, I think there's no need for me to apply at the moment: I do check abuse filters every now and then when people are confused about something, but so far I've always managed to get any necessary change done by the relevant users. Deleting /data/project/toolserver-home-archive/archive-2014-06-05.tar.xz
editThe archive file /data/project/toolserver-home-archive/archive-2014-06-05.tar.xz on Toolforge is associated with the toolserver-home-archive tool of which you are the sole maintainer. This 52G data file was nominated for deletion in 2016 and at that time you felt that people may still need the data it contained. It has been re-nominated for deletion 2020 for the same reason as before, specifically that it is an abnormally large file stored on our shared NFS infrastructure which is not an infinite storage resource. As the file is permanently available at https://archive.org/download/wikimedia-toolserver-home-2014-06-05 and there are no known active uses for it in Toolforge, we would like to remove it to allow those 52G of storage to be used by active tools.
I will be deleting this file on 2020-05-22 baring evidence that there is an active need for this data. Please do respond on phab:T136202 if you would like to contest or consent to the removal. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:43, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

editHi there, I'm developing a tool to assist users in verifying (structured) data of media on commons.
To understand the community's needs, I would like to invite you to participate in this questionnaire: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScbNdJdQYN1yBvEeKne48eWDU6SBsdlUfNBAmZyvUEBkCR1Gg/viewform?usp=sf_link. It should take ~2 minutes.
Thanks a lot. :D

Community Tech Launches Wikisource Improvement Initiative
editHello,
We hope you are all healthy and safe in these difficult times.
The Community Tech team has just launched a new initiative to improve Wikisource. We have created the first project (Improve ebook exports), which came out of the 2020 Community Wishlist Survey. We now invite you to share your feedback on the project talk page. Please let us know what you think of our project analysis; we want to hear from you! Furthermore, we hope that you will participate in the other Wikisource improvement projects, which we’ll address in the future. Thank you in advance and we look forward to reading your feedback on the project talk page!

News from the Tremendous Wiktionary User Group
editHello!
Sorry to write in English rather than in Italian!
I let you this message because you are part of the (very dynamic) Tremendous Wiktionary User Group!
As the process of name change is ongoing for the Wikimedia Foundation, I invite you to participate to a collective opinion from the user group. There is also a proposal for a communique directed to the WMF. You are welcome to discuss it too. I imagine you may also express your opinion through other canals but your inputs are still welcome! Thank you in advance! Noé (talk) 15:30, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Backing up IA..
editYou know about this: https://archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Internet_Archive#Backing_up_the_Internet_Archive
I would have mentioned certain Commons efforts there, but as you are aware I'm blocked on that wiki, because I screwed up years ago. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:16, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
The Open Letter and Wikimedia RU
editDear Federico,
we discussed the branding issue several times, and our opinions among members of Wikimedia RU are divided, with quite strong opining pro et contra the ongoing process, including signing of the open letter. Unfortunately, we couldn't reach consensus. Therefore, despite I personally consider the open letter reasonable and accurately stated (and so doesn't block the rebranding per se, it only calls for a consensus-finding process, I can't sign it. Sorry! Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 13:34, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Feedback requested: August update for Wikisource ebook export project
editHello, Nemo_bis! The Community Tech team has posted an August update to the Wikisource Ebook Export Improvement project, and we would love your feedback. The update includes findings from our community consultation, results from two technical analyses, and proposed next steps for the project. The feedback you provided has been crucial, and it has helped us understand how to approach our work. For this reason, we invite you to check out the latest update and share your feedback again on the project talk page. Thank you in advance! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 14:52, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
A request for translation
editHello! Would it be possible for you to translate some messages about the Community Wishlist Survey? It's starting today and will be open for the next 2 weeks.
If you know English-Italian translators, could you consider sharing this request with them, unless you feel committed to take care of all the remaining translations? Thanks! SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 16:05, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!

Feedback requested on November update for Wikisource ebook export project
editHello, Nemo bis! The Community Tech team is requesting your feedback on the recently posted November update for the Wikisource ebook export improvement project. Your feedback is very important to us. We want to know what you think of some work we have recently completed to improve the reliability of WS-Export and font support in various languages. Additionally, we want to know what you think of our proposed mockups to improve the download user experience. In that case, please do check out the updates, if you can, and share your feedback on the project talk page. Thank you! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 19:06, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

Wiki of Functions followup
editHi there, I'm a researcher for the Wikilambda project. Last month we held a naming contest and I'm following up with those who voted to see if you might be willing to provide some feedback to help guide the project.
This would be a 45 minute conversation about your past experience with other Wikimedia projects and thoughts about the future of this new initiative. I'm hoping to gather a wide range of perspectives so I'd be interested in your opinion regardless of whether you plan to have further involvement.
As a way of saying thanks, the research team is offering a $35 gift card (in your local currency) for participation. We could chat by phone or through a website for audio conferencing.
If you're interested just pick a time slot from this calendar link:

Hope to hear from you soon!

Former template
editHi Nemo-- I see that you are updating a few staff userpages with the former=
parameter to reflect their status. Can I ask what you are referencing when updating these? I ask because you've updated at least one page of a staff member who is still currently working for the Foundation, and this has had a disruptive impact on their work. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:02, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for contacting. Yes sorry, that was my mistake. Thank you for fixing.
- I merely looked at accounts which had been locked by other WMF people, as this account was. At first I manually checked that the account was still locked, and I made a couple mistakes. Then I improved the SQL query to check it for me, and I think I didn't make any further mistakes.
- There are still some ~100 accounts which were locked and never had a userpage in the first place. I'm not sure whether they're worth creating a userpage for. Nemo 15:00, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: Thanks for this response-- I can see why this happened now. Thanks for updating older staff userpages to reflect their actual status-- these are not consistently updated when contractors or staff leave, unforunately. As for the ~100 locked accounts, it's unfortunate that userpages were never created (this should always happen, IMO), but I doubt it is worthwhile to create them at this point. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 04:54, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
- Makes sense. Thanks, Nemo 06:48, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

editURL volatility
editThe Uni of Milano IT unit clearly doesn't know about the usefulness of installing redirects so that old URLs to relevant pages remain accessible after a backend change or web page redesign. Anyway, you might want https://web.archive.org/web/20111111011023/http://www.unimi.it/personale/769.htm and past/future equivalents to complement/update your role on the Uni of Milano board that you've put on your user page here. At least this claim by you to fame and power has not been forgotten by the Internet. :) Boud (talk) 23:20, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- Actually what you linked is just one of the many other bodies I belonged to... There's no point listing all of them, let alone providing links. The most powerful and interesting were often those nobody knows about. ;-)
- The link to the definition of "board of directors" was there only because most people don't know what it really is/was in Italy. I've now updated it, thanks! (Nowadays there's a fancier page but the powers of the body have changed: it's now arguably closer to what a board of directors normally is in English, but it's not what I was member of. The most stable information is actually in the PDFs of the official acts, which can be found with some elbow grease.) Nemo 23:48, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. If you’re an active Wikimedian, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.
We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

WP "decency", "let us think of the children" controversies list
editFascinating: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Controversial_content/Timeline - I have found it while researching the UCoC background.
Would you like to update it?
(I am pinging you as you seem to be the last editor there, apart from a quick antivandal revert.)
Bows Zezen (talk) 08:38, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- Is there anything new really? The UCoC is just a repeat of the 2012 "will someone please think of the children" failures. So far WMF is following the usual script, so I assume a crash is imminent. Nemo 11:37, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hello again and ta for the other ta, @Nemo bis.
- You did not ping me back then in June so I am reading about it only now. FYI, I have started to collect similar list of such initiatives in my (very rough) Draft here on meta, e.g. this bit: 2007: Esperanza - a similar, abandoned idea or samples from the mass 2007-2011 editors and admins removal as per WP:CHILDPRO (the best take on this bit of WP history is in the external snarky ED article, IMHO), not listed in your list above.
- I have also compiled more technical and hm... "SMcCandlishy" semi-public notes about UCoC itself, in Polish in my plwiki Draft. Their pl lang aside, they may be too weird for you :), so no URL yet.

Thread reagarding script rendition
editHello Federico. I'm B.Jankuloski, the bureaucrat from mk.wiki. Could you please see this Wikidata discussion relating to script adjustments we have been discussing some years ago. I have found an example of the correct rendition for Macedonian cursive/italics and I am enquiring there if there is a way to implement it for the whole mk.wiki, as per that conversation. I've also looped GerardM into this. It will be much appreciated by our community if the thing can be done. --B. Jankuloski (talk) 03:25, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Ancient language code - "omp"
editBuonasera Nemo bis! I am lucky to meet you finally as suggested by AFBorchert! Could you please explain me about how to create a platform for Ancient Meitei (language code - "omp")? When I used to translate English language policies and guidelines in Commons and Meta, first of all, I press "mni", the code for Modern Meitei and then the translation platform appears. But this doesn't happen for "omp". But other old languages like "grc" (Ancient Greek), "enm" (Middle English), etc. appear! Could you please tell me what shall I do to enable "omp" also for such things? :-) Haoreima (talk) 12:56, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Affiliate votes
editSo, the Board is asking how should affiliates participate in the upcoming Board elections, and this is a topic that has confused me for a while, because I don't really understand why they do at all. If I recall correctly, you've been in favor of affiliate elections (I think?), and you generally have well-reasoned opinions in my experience, so do you think you could briefly write something about why there are affiliate-selected board seats? (I was considering just putting up something arguing against it, but that would be pretty irresponsible of me given that I haven't even heard any of the arguments in favor of it.) --Yair rand (talk) 06:40, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Request for help with proofreading
editHi Nemo,
I have realized you are/were a member of the Transcom, so I would like to ask if you had time to proofread a short text in Italian, translated from English.
This is a 150 words summary of my BoT election statement. Unfortunately, due to a message from the WMF landing in my spamfilter I could not get a human translation along other candidates, and I believe Italian speakers deserve a better translation than my deepl hack. :)
Sorry for this personal request, but I believe better translations are better for the overall process.
Certainly, if you have any questions regarding candidacies, you can ask me or my colleagues directly. :) Thanks for your time aready!
Best Wishes, aegis maelstrom δ 23:06, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Pagine da tradurre
editCiao Nemo,
Grazie.
Cavarrone (talk) 14:46, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ricevuto. Peccatoǃ Cavarrone (talk) 15:06, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Thoughts on my Inuktitut translation of "Wiktionary"?
editHello Nemo! I recently stumbled across the Inuktitut version of Wiktionary, and saw that there wasn't a translation for the name "Wiktionary".
