Marking MegaMack02’s user page

Hello. I wanted to make a request. Since @MegaMack02 (a vandalism-only sockpuppeteer) has been banned from Wikimedia, could you mark their user page with the following templates?

{{sockpuppeteer}} {{WMF-legal banned user}}

Thank you. XJ999 (talk) 15:08, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

I’ve already left a message on their talk page concerning the ban (global lock). XJ999 (talk) 15:29, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Also note that one of his alts (@GamerMan09870, account 2 days old and having never interacted with anyone on the Commons, and thereby having no basis whatsoever to know anyone) managed to ping @Elcobbola on their user talk page to bemoan their Commons block. Elcobbola happens to be the exact same administrator that known sockpuppeteer @MegaMack02 managed to ping to bemoan their Commons block. How blasphemous! I could go on with the actions of other known socks, but I’ve omitted them for the moment per BEANS. XJ999 (talk) 15:46, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
The second template would be wrong, because both users are not banned by the Wikimedia Foundation, they are globally locked for crosswiki abuse. The first template doesn't fit as well, since both accounts never edited at metawiki -> there was no sockpuppet abuse at this wiki. Why does it even need any template? If you take a look at the contribution page [1] or global account information [2] the reason for the global lock will be displayed. --Johannnes89 (talk) 15:59, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Just realized that XJ999 is already blocked for sockpuppet abuse at Commons. As they claim to be the main account of 174.202.5.79 [3] which belongs to MegaMack02 [4] this request can surely be closed without any action. --Johannnes89 (talk) 16:07, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

Likely open proxy usage on English Wikisource

I wanted to let you guys know that there has been a user spamming links where the IP addresses change radically and very quickly. One address located in Chile and one from Ghana according to the geolocator...not very likely legitimate IP addresses. But the geolocator didn't detect any VPNs. Is there any way that you guys could find out what VPN they are using, and maybe get a list so that all IPs from that VPN could be permablocked on all projects?

Behavior is obsession with spamming a link to an "encyclopedia" site on chess-related Wikisource works.

A list of addresses I've encountered who were spamming this link:

  • 181.171.8.23
  • 41.215.172.113
  • 190.38.52.100
  • 188.122.195.41
  • 188.147.68.119 (possibly)
  • 154.160.4.156
  • 187.75.115.49
  • 154.160.30.80
  • 201.240.16.111

Let me know what we can do. Should I at least permablock these IPs, and can I assume they're open proxies based on the evidence? PseudoSkull (talk) 16:16, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

some of them are proxys according to ipqualityscore [5][6] --Johannnes89 (talk) 16:21, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
@PseudoSkull: This page is mainly intended for requests for meta-wiki. It might be better if you also post these requests on SRG or SRM. If you would prefer me to handle this administrative formality, I'll be happy to so. I'll also have a look at this (with a colleague with great knowledge on open proxies). Thanks for reporting! Move/delete accidental translation to another language

Hello, I have accidentally started to translate a page into another language I didn't intend to. Specifically, I created a whole translation of Wikimedia Europe/rue. It should've been a continuation of my translation into Wikimedia Europe/uk but I accidentally chose a different language.

I don't know what should be done in this situation. Should the whole section be deleted? or maybe the subpages should be moved? Please, help. Thank you. --Xnija (talk) 15:47, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

edit warring at talk:QW2022

OwenBlacker (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log), in conjunction with obvious socks of Fae (talk · contribs · page moves · block user · block log), are trying to own and censor this page, and are edit warring to that end. They insist, despite other s's objections, that the discussion community members are trying to have cannot be had on that page and must be elsewhere, when it directly concerns the user group and its public image. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:32, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Everyone involved here should be blocked: 2a02 for being an obvious sock of a WO contributor, OwenBlacker for edit warring, and Beeblebrox for edit warring and being overly antagonistic. Nobody has clean hands here and, frankly, everything after Peltarion's question should be removed as off topic. It is clear that they aren't Fae and this whole thing slid into a sideshow hours ago -- Guerillero Parlez Moi 21:46, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
I'm as entitled to be here as you are. I'm not locked, blocked, banned or anything else. All I've done is raised concerns about how an event is going to be conducted on the talk page for that event, and then tried to keep those concerns from being swept under the carpet by people who'd rather ignore them. 2A02:C7F:BD0C:F700:F183:B06A:638E:BD3D 15:51, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
I have (re-)hatted what I see as the most disruptive material. While the violation is probably sufficiently severe to warrant outright removal I opted to err on the side of caution and use the mildest measure necessary to end disruption. The other stuff is more borderline and while it belongs elsewhere could potentially be moved so I'm more hesitant in my actions towards it.
The idea that hatting is somehow inappropriate censorship represents a gross misunderstanding of our policies especially Meta:Civility. Threatening, harmful, uncivil, or harassing comments, or those containing personal attacks, private information about other users, libel, vandalism, soapboxing, advertising, irrelevant/off-topic material or just plain gibberish will be reverted, collapsed, revision deleted, or even suppressed as appropriate. Edit-warring to reinsert such material will result in blocks, and whining about the injustice of such removals isn't going to change that.
Personally I do not yet believe any blocks are needed, but if disruption resumes some p-blocks are probably in order.
FWIW I have no connection to (the wrong account was linked above) although I have some general knowledge of the user's reputation from the grapevine. What I can tell you is that you are extrapolating a lot from a very small amount of information and accusations of sockpuppetry are not to be made lightly. In general you should not accuse other contributors of misbehavior without evidence, especially when the accusations are repeated or severe. If you must make an accusation, then do so with evidence, on the user-talk page of the contributor in question or in the appropriate forum.
For that matter AFAICT Fæ is not (locally) blocked and as such even if it were Fæ the accounts would be inappropriate only if used for illegitimate reasons. And while we're on the topic even if you know for a fact that a user is an LTA's latest reincarnation the appropriate response is not trying to troll the troll which may result in you also being blocked (though in most cases I think a warning would be issued instead due to the mitigating circumstance) but to see that they are quietly blocked with a minimum of drama.
Although many WO members are evading locks that is not necessarily the case so while 2A02:C7F:BD0C:F700:7459:ED99:DF51:89B0/33 already has 4 x-wiki blocks (verify) the range is wide enough that it certainly includes numerous constructive users (and yes some LTAs too). Hence, unless disruption resumes, or there is further evidence that they are evading a (local) block or a lock then blocking is likely still premature.
OwenBlacker doesn't really come across as any worse then any of the other participants here. I don't see any claim that the affiliate has sole control over the talk page or special ownership of it although the reference to the foundation and grants team is a bit odd since being in good-standing doesn't immunize you from criticism even if it is indirect evidence that the criticism is unfounded. Anyway I don't think a block is needed unless edit-warring resumes.
Sorry this ended up being long. 131.128.76.50 01:15, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I stumbled on https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&offset=&limit=500 and just wonder if any of those clearly mass-created accounts (plenty in 2020 and 2022) should be blocked? Thanks. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:35, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Ciao. Many of the ones starting with exclamation marks are already globally locked, so I'm not sure there's much to do at this stage. For those that are not, they are not actively editting so a block would serve no purpose as it would not prevent much IMHO, except for abusive usernames that ought to be hidden or suppressed. Request to delete the translation page

Wikimedian's Group of Mainland China (English & Korean version) need to be deleted. Thanks for your help and support.--A Chinese user (talk) 14:45, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

@A Chinese user: why? -- Pols12 (talk) 16:41, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
@Pols12:We've made changes to the Chinese version and it has not ended, so we need to re-create the translated version after the changes completed.--A Chinese user (talk) 01:09, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
@A Chinese user There is no need to delete the translations. You may safely edit Chinese source page, trying to keep markers (<!--T:1-->) when the text has only changed a bit. For new text, don’t add any marker, just ensure it is inside <translate> tags. Each empty new line make a new translation unit (so there is no need to close the translate tag after each paragraph).
A translation admin will review the page and mark it for translation, invalidating outdated translations. Pols12 (talk) 11:38, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I have spoken with @CKibelka (WMF) about changing the ordering of this table to be sorted, by default, by statement rather than by candidate (like how the MCDC table was sorted). The main problem is that there are already a lot of translations. So request for help is, how to re-order the table rows without invalidating the translations? Or if there's an easy way to restore the translations after re-ordering. Thanks! Legoktm (talk) 03:01, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Update Module:Navbox from en.wp

Currently, navboxes translated in RTL languages still align text to left (example), because text-align property is hard-coded in Module:Navbox. We should use templateStyles instead, because this allows an automatic flipping of directions for RTL languages. This fix seems to have already been implemented on English Wikipedia by Izno.

So I would like a sysop imports last updates from en.wp to our local Module:Navbox, please. -- Pols12 (talk) 20:00, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Anyone who does this should also probably correct any misuses of the navbox HTML class and then remove it from Common.css here. Izno (talk) 23:48, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
insource:/class="(\w*\s)*(navbox|navbox-inner|navbox-subgroup|navbox-list|navbox-group|navbox-title|navbox-abovebelow|navbox-list|navbox-even|navbox-odd)[\s"]/ does not returned any result, in all namespaces.
This doesn’t include potential use cases by modules, but regex can’t help, since class name can be contain inside a variable. Do you know a tool to check some CSS class use case, @Izno? -- Pols12 (talk) 21:10, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
since class name can be contain inside a variable Just find the class name without the class piece of it. Which you'll need to do anyway since your regex won't hit addClass. ~200 uses of navbox class and ~300 uses of navbox derivative classes that should be filtered for false positives and archives and then corrected, either by changing to use Template:Navbox, removal of the class, or some other template (perhaps {{collapse}}). Those don't include any talk namespace pages (as generally archives or unnecessary to update or both), and I usually don't touch user pages (as they can take care of themselves) (without user space and removing a few templates that are translated subpages, 15 and 10 respectively).
Anyway, I noticed another thing you need to take care of here which is that Module:Navbox here has the improvements to load hlist and plainlist styles if appropriate (first done at MediaWiki wiki when that one got TemplateStyled). Those need to be preserved here also, which means a trivial import of the updates is not the best plan of merging at the end of the day. Izno (talk) 21:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
So, I reviewed those 25 and made a couple edits; all the remaining are false positives or able to lean on the styles from Navbox/styles.css. Which still leaves merging the improvements from MediaWiki wiki and from en.wp together. Do you think you can manage that? Izno (talk) 02:36, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks for reviewing all these pages!
OK, I’m trying to make our local styles consistent with MediaWiki.org and en.wp ones. -- Pols12 (talk) 12:12, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
  Done. However, @Izno why .navbox-group class has got /* @noflip */ directive for text-align:right rule? I think it should be removed. -- Pols12 (talk) 22:03, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
That was there from when it was in Common.css since 2011, see this edit when @noflip was added to ResourceLoader. Maybe TheDJ can explain better why it should be there. I don't personally see a reason why it should be. Izno (talk) 22:16, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
OK, thanks. That made sense for English Wikipedia, since content is not supposed to be in RTL language. But that actually may be reverted so that styling adapts to PageLanguage. -- Pols12 (talk) 22:28, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
As for merging, I was speaking not so much to the styles.css but to the changes necessary in the Lua. Izno (talk) 22:16, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. But, is there actually anything “better” in MediaWiki.org version than in en.wp one? -- Pols12 (talk) 22:51, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes. MediaWiki wiki (and also the current meta) has this change, which has not been made to en.wp in full yet (namely, finding and providing the TemplateStyles for hlist and plainlist). Izno (talk) 23:12, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Since there are no more dependencies to update, and for clarity, I have open a simple edit request on the talk page of the module. --Pols12 (talk) 01:16, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Done - I will administer a brief block (6 hours) to the user. This block should serve as a clear warning that this kind of importing is not really desired at meta. In case the user would continue their actions after the expiry of the block, further action could be taken. Daniuu (talk) 15:21, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Request for MassMessage right (again)

Hello, I was previously granted MassMessage right back in 2020 and 2021 which is now expired. I am in the organizing team of Wiki Loves Monuments in India, which will start tomorrow and Wiki Loves Food in India, which will happen in November this year. I am also planning a data-thon during the 10th birthday of Wikidata. My mass message logs are here to check. It would be really helpful if the right is given to me again, if possible permanently. Thanks in advance. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 12:10, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi. Please semi-protect my user talk page due to vandalism by GRP or a friend. -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 13:15, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Jeff G., are you asking for protection to infinite time? Mykola 13:23, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
@Mykola7: Until GRP and friends are no longer a problem. In their own words, "FOREVER AND EVER" per the summary of this edit. -- Jeff G. ツ (please ping or talk to me) 17:09, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
I put protection for a year so far. --Mykola 17:16, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Report concerning User:Joana Fagundes Jaras

Joana Fagundes Jaras (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • GUC • CA)Reasons: Special:Diff/23719973; I think this attempt to influence the board elections by maligning one of the candidates is serious enough to warrant an immediate block. Also, all the candidates’ pages should probably be protected at some level. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 10:39, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Done by @Mykola7 which beat me to. Endorse indef. Joana's edit is simply unnaceptable. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:46, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
Blocked. I would protect this pages, but I'm not sure I can do it in the plan that I have nothing to do with this election, unless of course there is systematic vandalism. Maybe JSutherland (WMF) will protect them if he deems it necessary. Mykola 10:54, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
IMO one rationale can be "high traffic" page, and a short duration till end of elections as this current edit is directly violating BLP policy in some sense. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 11:23, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
We can add a rule to block editting from e.g. non-autoconfirmed via AbuseFilter for Wikimedia Foundation elections/2022/Candidates/.*. I'll see what I can do. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:38, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
Was going to suggest this; just wondering if we are/should be blocking translations too? ~~~~

I think a filter would be better. Also I think that translations also need to protect. Mykola 14:01, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

This has come to a close with the page deleted. The involved closure was challenged here and there w/o any one opining, I think it's safe to say all is done and can be marked with {{section resolved}} and archived. Owing to the user insisting of an uninvolved admin to handle all stuffs, I hope someone uninvolved can mark it. Thanks so much in advance. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 10:48, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
