Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
Events/Projects Remarks
Workshop
  • Highly experienced Wikimedians conducted workshop as resource persons ensuring quality of the events.
Wikipedia Takes
  • Experienced travel and heritage writer from the community led the event ensuring photo-coverage of under-represented areas.
Wiki Explores
  • High enthusiasm, dedication and extreme passion to document heritage structures in remote and under-represented areas, which are in verge of destruction, made it possible to execute the Wiki Explores project under odd conditions.
  • We are also fortunate to have @Amitabha Gupta: for planning and successfully executing the events.
Documenting Kolkata Heritage
  • First attempt from the user group was taken by the user group members to document heritage structures of Kolkat in very organized way.
GLAM
  • Old manuscripts were scanned in a remote district of West Bengal.
Content Donation
  • The user group was able to release copyright of 10 books from 2 Bengali authors.
Meetups
  • 2 Wikisource meetups were organized.
  • First Annual General Meeting of the user group was organized.
  • We were able to explore few free venues for the meetups.
In general
  • This time, the user group asked the community to plan and execute projects as per their need in a decentralized bottom-up way and support was provided.
  • WBG was helped by CIS-A2K to arrange free venues for workshop and other logistics support.
  • The projects were conducted at a very low cost.
  • Documentation is done in a more structured and organized way.
  • What did not work so well?
Events/Projects Remarks
Wikipedia Takes
  • Relevant Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles are still not created, mainly because the projects were executed by Commons contributors.
  • Uploading all images from all participants could not be ensured.
  • Post photo-walk workshop was not planned to help new users.
  • Use of uploaded images in different Wikimedia projects were low.
  • Very few Images were nominated for valued and quality images.
Wiki Explores
  • Relevant Wikidata items and Wikipedia articles are still not created for many heritage structures, mainly because the projects were executed by Commons contributors. These task are in the pipeline.
  • Use of uploaded images in different Wikimedia projects were low.
  • Very few Images were nominated for valued and quality images.
  • Heritage sites are scattered and distant, situated in remote places, significantly causing reduction of time and energy.
  • To reduce the cost of the project, we have relied on one Wikimedian to execute the projects, other community members have thus missed the opportunity to be part of the documentation effort.
GLAM - Purulia
  • It was not an official GLAM, just enough effort was spent to document the manuscripts.
  • Follow-up could not be done because of lack of manpower.
Content donation and scanning
  • The post-processing time is time-consuming and tiring, so we couldn't get more books scanned.
  • As we have only one scanner and that too is not working for last few months, we had to stop scanning processing.
In general
  • Few projects committed by the community members was not executed which led us to have some unspent money.

  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Wikidata items will have to be created at the earliest.
    • The percentage of use of images contributed in Commons will be ensured, but we are also aware that takes some time.
    • Nominations of images contributed in Commons for Valued Images and Quality Images will be increased.
    • GLAM initiatives will be taken in a more organized way.
    • WBG will closely work with CIS-A2K with respect to build institutional partnerships.
