Wiki Exploration is an initiative taken by West Bengal Wikimedians User Group to document archaeological and built heritage sites in different parts of the state of West Bengal, India, even in the remote areas in a cost-effective way in different phases. At present we are conducting further phases in other States as well.

Under this grant proposal we intend to document built heritage sites located in Nadia and Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, Aurangabad district of Maharashtra and Northern part of Sikkim.

The main challenge to photo document these heritage sites are that they are not covered well in Wikimedia Commons because many of them are located in remote part of India. Even the UNESCO heritage sites located in prominent locations are not systematically documented on Wikimedia sites.

7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.

The project will have four phases

     1. Wiki Explores Nadia, Phase III (Field work in November 2024, 5 days)
     2. Wiki Explores Aurangabad, Phase I (Field work in January 2025, 15 days)
     3. Wiki Explores Sikkim Phase II (Field work in September-October 2024, 10 days)
     4. Wiki Explores Coochbehar, Phase II (Field work in February 2025, 6 days)

From July to September, we will do background research to cover the places which our team will visit in the field trips as mentioned in the time line above. During the field trip, a small team of professional photographers, videographer and possibly a drone operator will assemble to document the heritage sites. The media files will be uploaded in Wikimedia Commons subsequently during the grant period.

I will conduct two workshops for the participants as well as with prospective contributors for better understanding of documentation procedures of built heritage sites.
