Wiki Exploration project of Sikkim-Phase I edit

This event has been planned to explore the state of Sikkim and its various important places and monuments and heritage structures. For the first time Sikkimm will be included in the Wiki exploration project. The monuments are not explored as much as they should be and there are not sufficient related media in Commons too. Hence a detailed exploration is needed to gather more related media in Wikimedia commons. This will help in providing suppoting media while writing related articlesin Wikipedia. Since Sikkim is a vast state, I propose to conduct the exploration in multiple phases , begining with major parts of East and West Sikkim and to some extent parts of South Sikkim.

The tentative number of days of first phase of Wiki explores Gangtok should be between 18-20 days. Exploration will done based at Aritar, Nathang Valley, Gangtok, Bermiok, Ravangla, Pelling and Yuksom.


Approximate Budget would be between Rs 2,75,000 to Rs 3,00,000" with a rough breakup as follows. The more realistic fugures can be provided after obtaining figures from tour operators on Monday -5th February 2024 :-

@Amitabha Gupta:, thank you for submitting a detailed proposal for another phase of Wiki Exploration Program. However, as you have mentioned that your intended date of activity is between April and May, you cannot apply for the next phase of Rapid Fund, which will start from April, 2024. Wiki Loves Documentaries edit

Video documentaries on the cultural heritage of West Bengal, including folk songs, dance, food, handicrafts, etc. We will also be publishing eBooks on these subjects with images and essays. We plan to continue creating an average of 3 documentaries each year. The team will comprise a mix of experienced Wikimedians and people experienced in the specific topic. We will also include some professionals for quality video creation.

Proposed subjects (we will be choosing three from this list) -

  1. Chhau mask and dance
  2. Sheherwali community and their food
  3. Leto Gaan
  4. Dokra
  5. Public domain folk songs
  6. Rabindra sangeet

Wiki Loves Bengal Terracotta edit

We would be photo-documenting each single terracotta panel of the temples and create an eBook with images and details about the temples and the place. In the first phase we plan to cover temples in and around Kalna.

Wiki Comics edit

Proposed activities edit

Around 25 pages of comics will be created on Wikimedia, highlighting some of the local volunteers, and the various projects of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. We plan to publish one such comic book each year to raise awareness and educate people about Wikimedia and the various projects of the user group in a fun way. The book will be published digitally as an eBook in both Bengali and English and will be available for free. We will be working with professional comic artists and scriptwriters to work on this project.

Wiki Loves Monuments In India 2024 edit

Like the past few years the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group will be organising the Wiki Loves Monuments in India in 2024. We plan to organise two workshops on how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons, for Wiki Loves Monuments and how to take better images. We would also be organising two photo walks to cover places yet to be documented in Wikimedia Commons. The photo walks would end with brief workshops on Wikimedia Commons and Wiki Loves Monuments.

Documentation of Museums and Archaeological Sites edit

Proposed activities edit

Documentation of museums and archaeological sites in West Bengal will be done. Documentation activities will be conducted at 4 museums and 2 archaeological sites in and around Kolkata. We have planned photo documentation with detailed descriptions and informations.

Wiki Loves Heritage Kolkata edit

This event is planned to explore various important places and monuments and heritage structures of Kolkata. Wiki Loves Heritage Kolkata is a photo documentation project which has been planned to photograph, geo-tagged 500+ number of KMC defined graded heritages and non heritages which photographs are still not available in Wikimedia Commons.

  • 500 images to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Wiki data item and virtual mapping.

Estimated budget edit

The project will require about 4 to 5 months of field work. First we will spend a little bit for shooting but our projector will require 4 to 5 meetups.

Wiki explores Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, Phase I edit

Aurangabad district of Maharashtra is one of the districts which is absolutely rich in built heritage. There are several rock cut architecture, temples, fort and fine examples of Mughal architecture. While there are many imageries of the popular locations in Wikimedia Commons, unfortunately they are not systematically documented and lacks quality images. Also relatively unknown places like Janjala Fort, Ghatotkacha Caves, Antur Forts have little or no presence in Commons. This exploration project is being conducted in several phases for photo document systematic photo documentation of built heritage of the district in multiple phases. This is the first phase of seven days which comprises of covering considerable part of Aurangabad city and Ellora Caves.

Bangla Wikisource workshops and associated activites edit

4-6 comprehensive physical workshops in different parts of West Bengal targeting people who care more about language and literature. The partners and venues are not confirmed now, but there has been primary promising discussions.

Expected impact edit

  • At least 40 new accounts
  • 10 new active contributors

Estimated budget edit

  • INR 150,000/- maximum for all workshops. The expenditure might vary depending upon the opportunities, but we will try to reduce the cost as much as possible.

I would like to apply for a yearly subscription to Adobe Lightroom + Adobe Photoshop for editing raw image files. I have uploaded 4995 files to Wikimedia Commons including photographs of heritage sites and museum artefacts last year.

Expected impact edit

I plan to upload 5000+ images of heritage sites, terracotta panels of temples and museum artefacts this year.

Digitisation of Shillong Bangiya Sahitya parishat’s magazine ‘Karmasala’ edit

Digitisation of Shillong Bangiya Sahitya parishat’s magazine ‘Karmasala’. Shitya Parisad is an years old organisation situated in Shillong, Meghalaya with a long heritage of Bengali cultural. Sahitya parisad was established in the year of 1937 and there had some connection with Bangiya Sahitya Parisad of Kolkata. Karmasala is the Magazine published by the Shillong Sahitya Pareisad. The old issues of the said magazine have been retrieved from their archives and they are now agree to digitised with Wiki and also ready to release copy right for public domain. Total pages are approximately 5000 pages.

Expected impact edit

• The Bengali digital materials in archive will be increased. • Magazine has a historical an also literary significance of Bengali culture in Shillong. • Who want to work in future on Shilong’s Bengali culture, societie, people, personality, demography etc then these documents obviously will be helpful. • In the field of Inter cultural relationship ( i.e Bengali and other community of Assam and Meghalaya) this documents will be authentic references.

Digitisation Professor Tapodhir Bhattacharya’s (Ex Vice-Chancellor Assam University) books. Tapodhir Bhattacharya is one of the eminent scholars in the field of eastern and western literary theory has written many books including poetries. It is his magnanimity that among these valuable book as like previous he agreed to release copy right for public domain. We should take this opportunity asap.

• The Bengali digital materials in archive will be increased. • It is very good chance to archive new books that is comparatively not available online. • Community get many ready references from this recourses. • Many authors, creative writers may be inspired with this copyright release activity. And giving this example west Bengal user group can approach to more authors or institutions to release copyright and it will be helpful to increase the more current recourses.
