edit- The scope of this logo is air travel only. IMHO, this is a bit too narrow.---<(kmk)>- (talk) 15:03, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- It is a metaphor. Is the second logo about air balloon travel only? Nicolas1981 (talk) 01:25, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- A better small version is needed. There has been discussion about creating small buttons & banners for external websites to link to Wikivoyage (see voy:Wikivoyage talk:Tourism Bureau Expedition). Perhaps just the plane flying around a "W". The scope of the logo is limited, but it is still a very nice logo and air travel is so closely associated with travel in general that it shouldn't be too big of an issue. AHeneen (talk) 17:23, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- What is the smallest size at which we can reasonably expect the logo to be used? 16px seems smaller than any icon use I've seen. 32px looks closest to how WMF icons are displayed in browser tabs, which the smallest use I'm familiar with. Also, at such small resolutions, I believe the convention is to omit the text. --Peter Talk 18:21, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- A Favicon is a file containing one or more small icons, most commonly 16×16 pixels, and yes, usually, text is omitted in such small resolutions. -- Rillke (talk) 19:45, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think the small version would work better if we took out the word "Wikivoyage" (in the small version only - keep it in the larger versions). It's unreadable at that size and taking it out would allow more room for the plane. PerryPlanet (talk) 21:38, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

- This, rotated by 90 degrees, may make a good miniature icon. PrinceGloria (talk) 05:57, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Airplanes are often relatet to environmental pollution. That's why i dislike this logo. --Nicor (talk) 14:03, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hmmm, not sure about this one. The logo reminds me of a fish or some sort of salamander, rather than a plane. — SMUconlaw (talk) 17:10, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I like this one but the tail is a bit too wide or the plane too small imo. --Lofor (talk) 18:01, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- This is definitely my favorite of the three options. It's sleek, it looks modern, and it most clearly conveys the idea of "travel" of any of the three. Aside from the aforementioned suggestions regarding the small version, I wouldn't change a thing. PerryPlanet (talk) 23:27, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
The logo will look better with transparment backcolor, and that at the 32px and the 16px versions will be without the "wikivoyage". בנימין (talk) 15:10, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- All submissions should probably choose the same background type (white or transparent) for the final vote. I'll ask about that. --Peter Talk 17:32, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
I believe two modifications are needed before the final vote, both of them just for the 32px and 16px versions:
- Remove text
- Make the icon "fatter"
Globe-trotter, are you working on these modifications? --Peter Talk 17:32, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- I really don't like the font, particularly the "W" · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:34, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- The basket looks a bit too narrow · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:34, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Not only too narrow.. I think the style could be changed to fit with the balloon a lot more. Balloon looks 3D, basket looks 2D; balloon has gradients, basket is solid; balloon is abstract and tapers, basket is a simple shape. Having said that I'm really happy this made it to the final round, it's an exciting design and with a few tweaks (definitely the font too), I think it would be an excellent logo for Wikivoyage. --tiimta (hello) 10:49, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- Why we cann't save Lenka font for this logo? May be use alternative color scheme, change basket, minimum rotate it ccw? Digr (talk) 12:28, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

- Too much of similar colors, IMHO. Could you please made a version in standart Wikimedia colors? Ain92 (talk) 10:17, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Wikimedia colors shouldn't be used in of these logos. Wikivoyage is a standalone content project like Wikipedia, not a meta project like Commons, Wikidata or Meta-Wiki. Also, it has a long history (since 2006) outside the WMF. Globe-trotter (talk) 14:03, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree strongly with Globe-trotter that aping meta WMF projects is not something we should aim for. We should aim for originality and individual personality in the color scheme, which I feel this logo has. --Peter Talk 18:37, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Not to mention that WMF's color scheme is absolutely unsuitable for any logo. (At least not if you're not seriously working on the tones of the green and the red.)--Toter Alter Mann (talk) 08:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- No project ever will ape this colour scheme for sure, except for WikiComposting perhaps, but it is still bad. Needs other colour options. PrinceGloria (talk) 06:35, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

- The basket is definitely better, the font is more readable, and I can't notice the rotation. Ain92 (talk) 10:19, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- The font is very slick and minimalist, it doesn't really fit with the playfulness of the logo. The basket is an improvement. Globe-trotter (talk) 13:39, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I like this logo the best. — SMUconlaw (talk) 17:13, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Globe-trotter that this font less fits the playfulness of the icon (which I love). I'm not sure why people object to the former font, perhaps they could clarify specifically why, and hopefully offer alternative suggestions? --Peter Talk 18:24, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Here's a version with a gradient for the basket (to make it look a bit more 3D per concerns above) and with the old Lenka Stabilo font in shades of green for a comparison (also per a suggestion above). I very, very slightly rounded the corners of the basket also. I prefer the basket in this version slightly over the above, but I don't think the Lenka font works as well as the original font above. --Peter Talk 18:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I love your version with Lenka Stabilo font in greens! Looks like the balloon is travelling above Brazil forests :-) My font was not playful enough indeed. Nicolas1981 (talk) 03:09, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yea I love this too. Maybe there is still a better font out there, but this basket is great and I like the use of green in the font. --tiimta (hello) 11:49, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Another comment: The wider basket looks much better at small sizes, but I think it's a little too wide when larger, as in the sidebar version. I presume we could use a slightly different version for these different purposes, right? --Peter Talk 18:54, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with Peter that large basket look bad in larger versions. Make it small for larger versions. Basket design can be tweaked from |_| to \_/ to see how it looks. ( i dont find better way to explain this :)) Try with different fonts also. -Nizil Shah (talk) 19:15, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Nizil Shah, using an isosceles trapezoid is one of those very simple, should-have-been obvious ideas that really improves the look. I think it looks best at every size. I use it in the following two examples, which show alternate color schemes, and alternate fonts. The fonts are in order clockwise from top left: Trajan Pro Bold, Lerotica, Lenka Stabilo, Linear Regular. I think the original color scheme is still the best--it's bold and eye-catching, classy, and suggests Brazil forests per Nicolas1981 ;) I don't have a very strong opinion about the fonts, but I think I like Trajan Pro Bold the best. The icon is already so whimsical that I think the more staid font works, while Lenka seems a bit overkill. Lenka was necessary to liven up our old, incredibly dull logo. --Peter Talk 21:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

- This is great. I agree with Peter about the color scheme, and the original font is crisp and appealing. — Scott • talk 19:47, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- If this logo ultimately passes, which I am most afraid it might, it certainly should not be used combined with a cartoonish font, as Peter said. We could use something along the lines of Gill Sans with it - very legible and to-the-point, but not serifed or overly artsy.
- The new colour propositions are going somewhere, but I'd ditch the central green stripe altogether as well, and try something in the typical base colours used for balloons, which is blue, red and yellow. Of the greens used, we could perhaps do with the pastel green on the left of the original proposal, the other two are (right one) "composting green" and (middle one) "forest green", neither of which suit a balloon well. PrinceGloria (talk) 04:55, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I for one think the font should be playful too. I love the Lenka Stabilo one for this reason.
- Unrelated comment from a friend: Maybe could you put an earth or a suitcase instead of the gondola (basket)? Nicolas1981 (talk) 05:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Ask and you shall receive. Below are color schemes in blue, red, and yellow per PrinceGloria. I still think the logo author's original color scheme is the best, though--I haven't been able to equal it. It's sharp and classy. De gustibus non est disputandum, but, ah, I think I'm going to have to dispute your gustibus. To the right is the version with suitcase, which has a nice enough aesthetic, but I think it's just too surrealist once you realize what you're looking at. --Peter Talk 07:33, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you very much Peter! I believe, to quote Beth Ditto, that we are indeed moving in the right direction. Let us not dispute tastes, they are subjective. Objectively, however, the versions with different colours are simply better and don't look like cabbage :D I guess the RBY combo might look a bit too sombre in those shades, I was wondering if perhaps combining the violet and light blue from one of your earlier versions with a third balancing hue (also a pastel one if you find a fitting one) might just hit the sweet spot.
- I personally like the suitcase idea. It doesn't change much in lower resolutions and adds a nice touch in the high-res versions, as well as at least brings us closer to the idea of travel. PrinceGloria (talk) 19:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I tried a bunch of different pastels for the central band (and desaturated & lightened the colors of the others just a tad), and the bgv variant to the right is definitely the best I came up with. There was a suggestion in the poll below that brighter colors might work better. The versions on the right below are higher saturation (with Lenka font), while the ones on the left (with Deja Vu Sans) are in the original color schemes. edit- Could you please make some non-Latin versions? Ain92 (talk) 10:08, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, Lenka only supports Latin characters. It's based on the author's handwriting, which makes it difficult to apply to multiple alphabets. I'm not someone who knows a ton about typeface design, but I could certainly recommend alternative fonts for non-Latin alphabets. Cyrillic, for example, I think looks pretty nice with Trebuchet MS (although something a little more bold might harmonize better with Lenka). --Peter Talk 16:49, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- I think we all need to know what the problem is. If it is the font or the colour scheme, no big deal, but tell us already. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:37, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- The arrows can't be concave quadrilaterals (per link above). This is a major element of the current design - the concavity leads your eye from one arrow to the next and brings it all together. Plus most arrow heads are that shape, so diverging from that shape is diverging from an easily recognisable arrow. --tiimta (hello) 10:03, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

- I like it, nice and simple, but maybe try with two-tone arrows to make it look 3D? -mattbuck (Talk) 18:41, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- I really like this logo, especially how it scales to smaller sizes, and retains integrity even without text. I think if you just change the concave angle to an arc - making it like a circle has been inscribed on the insides of all the triangles, that you would have a similar logo (especially at small size), but it's distinctly not a concave quadrilateral. Vanisaac (talk) 00:17, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Is perfect. And I agree Vanisaac. The small one without the text is nice too. --DerFussi 10:09, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

- The Russian version is most probably wrong: First, its font is too much weighted (not bold here but really black). Second, the term chosed which reads viki gid is not translating "voyage" or "trip", but the term "guide" (i.e. the tourism book) If would have used one of the following terms after the transliteration of "viki" :
- путешествие (voyage, tourisme)
- дорога (route, voie, chemin, voyage)
- поездка (promenade, course, tournée, voyage, tour, chemin)
- плавание (navigation, voyage, sailing, swim)
- странствие (voyage, pèlerinage)
- езда (course, balade, circulation, trafic, voyage)
- путь (voie, route, ligne, chemin, trajet, voyage)
- For simplicity of the composition, the first one is probably too long, the second term is probably the best (дорога, doroga), but I like also поездка (poezdka) which is not just about the road followed but related for to the (virtual) visit, to speak about the points of interests and things to know when traveling. I would avoid the term странствие which is too much related to religion. The two final terms are probably too short or too narrow/technical in meaning. I also like the term плавание (plavanye).
- Is there a vote for translating the term "Wikivoyage" in Russian? to submit one of: вики-дорога (read viki-doroga), вики-поездка (read viki-poezdka), вики-плавание (read viki-plavanye) ? verdy_p (talk) 14:10, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

- I am very disappointed that this logo must be modified, and I don't like any of the proposed modifications. Had I known that the logo I was voting for would not be allowed, I would have voted for other proposals. In the end, I will vote for any of the modifications of this logo, because I think they are better than the other finalists; however, I don't think they are as good as the logos that had been my 2nd and 3rd choices, after your original, unmodified logo. I feel cheated and greatly regret that it doesn't seem to have been possible for management to know about the copyright issue before the first round of voting. - Pity the original proposal has to be changed! The lines are a bit too thin now making the logo look weak and transparent. --Danapit (talk) 08:18, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, this isn't working for me. I prefer the hot-air balloon logo. The arrows in this logo are too thin, and somehow I don't get the idea of travel from it. Also, there was a comment in the discussion relating to the hot-air balloon logo suggesting that the WikiVoyage logo shouldn't use the same colour scheme as Wikimedia projects as it's a standalone project like Wikipedia. — SMUconlaw (talk) 17:18, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- What about other color scheme? --Danapit (talk) 14:11, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have a strong hunch I know what the legal issue was... but this is a real pity. I don't think this stripped down version works. The original arrows suggested compass points, while this one doesn't seem to me to have a relation to travel. This emaciated version lacks the dynamism of the original, and doesn't work at all when small. Could it be resurrected in some other form? --Peter Talk 18:29, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- No hunches required - the logo cannot use concave quadrilaterals for arrows. --tiimta (hello) 11:42, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Gotta agree with Peter on this new version. The original made me think of a compass, but this new one makes me think of a star or something, and is way too faint as a browser icon. PerryPlanet (talk) 21:32, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

- Both versions are very fine logos (I even rated them higher then two other candidates), but they consist mostly of text, and are optimised for English text "wikivoyage". This'is why I'm quite against it, because for Russian "викигид" almost all the composition will be destroyed. Ain92 (talk)

- Of the new variants, I like this one the best, but I think that's because it's so similar to the initial submission. My concern would be that this is not enough of a change to pass the legal review. Although I'm obviously not qualified to make that judgement ;) --Peter Talk 18:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- This is my favourite logo and it's variant and hope it would pass the legal review. It was said that "... the three arrow elements ... cannot be shaped as concave quadrilaterals, but they can be triangles, quadrilaterals that are not concave, or other shapes." IMO this design would fulfill it, but ... --Danapit (talk) 06:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

- I like this idea best, but I think it would look better if the concave triangles all shared the same radius. If you try to draw a circle by connecting the triangles, it looks a bit wonky. —Fredddie™
- indeed they all have the same radius, 2 units, wich is the same length than the hight of the arrow. Best --AleXXw (talk) 12:08, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think Freddie means that the radii of the concavities should imply a common center point for all three arrows. That is, the negative space should look like a circle. LtPowers (talk) 15:30, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- OK, missunderstood that. The problem with that solution is that there are two different variants in wich the arrows are different far away... Now the negative space is a reuleaux triangle, at least another curve of constant width ;) --AleXXw (talk) 17:11, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

- Yes, it's based on that. Open Sans is my ultimate favourite font, but I wasn't sure if it would fit good here. Further, I thought I had set the text in dark grey. Maybe it's very dark? Wolf Lambert (talk) 09:14, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

But if I have to express an opinion on the above fonts I would go for linear, as it is, and for Open Sans, but with less contrast between the two words because both are equally important for this project. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:53, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

- I prefer the cleaner look of the original submission. The logo design is fairly tech-y, which looks a bit better with a more complementary font. The WIKI part looks just a little too Wikipedia-y, and the stroke following the v does look weird--I don't think that's how I'd write it in script. --Peter Talk 21:49, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- The Pacifico font is nice, but we need to see all the possible language versions, including non-Latin scripts, to make a judgement. At any rate, as a typographer, you surely know that Gill Sans ALWAYS WINS anyway :D PrinceGloria (talk) 22:21, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, yeah Wolf Lambert (talk) 06:32, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you Wolf, although I quite like your proposal, I prefer the version with Gill Sans. Also it is evident that the unusual font upsets readability, which is worrying in a logo. --Danapit (talk) 06:17, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- I prefer the original font. Furthermore I agree with El Grafo: the initial "v" it's not so clear. --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:56, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
What about these?
edit-
slightly modified shape; cool colors
-
breaking up the quadrilateral shape; warmer colors
Either of these shapes and/or color schemes strike your fancy? LtPowers (talk) 01:08, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- LtPowers, sorry, I didn't see this. Yes, I do like the first color scheme (cool colors), although RGB would be my first option. I would prefer to keep the Variant 4 shape, though. --Danapit (talk) 08:22, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- About the second version I would just say: OMG! :-D --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:04, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Just experimenting with some different shapes. The latter would (presumably) let us keep the quadrilateral that we all liked. LtPowers (talk) 21:51, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- Nice but my favourite is still Wikivoyage/Logo_2013/Finalist_review/WV-Logo_Proposal_AleXXw#New Variant 4: concave rounded triangles with the classic RGB colors --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:06, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

- Support Nice to have an alternate color version, and I think this one works pretty well. --Peter Talk 21:33, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Works for me. LtPowers (talk) 21:52, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Support these colors, especially the green. I don't want the "meta" (red green blue) colors. So I'd like to see alternative colors like these. Rogerhc (talk) 06:00, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- Support The main issue I had with this design was the RGB colors, and I like this a lot better. Not the best, but my favorite variant of this logo. 108.14.250.111 20:05, 18 August 2013 (UTC) Soory I forgot to log in. Nick1372 (talk) 20:07, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

- Support The other two concave rounded triangle proposals (RGB and all blue) are fine, but this one is the best. Bothvar (talk) 19:41, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Why don't combine them all?

- None of three proposal really convinced me. But combining a few is a very good idea. But perhaps less logos makes a better logo. It looks a bit overcrowded. Perhaps just two logos
- Airplane + balloon (+ original wikiVoyage logo)
- balloon + compass (this 120° thing by AleXXw) (+ original wikiVoyage logo)
