Finalist review

edit

The three logos going into the final revision are (in no particular order)

With regards to File:WV-Logo Proposal AleXXw.svg, this does need some minor modifications to avoid legal issues. These have been communicated directly to AleXXw.

Please join in discussing the finalists and potential modifications. For each of the three finalists, the community may select up to two modifications to run along with the original for the final vote. A simple majority poll on this page is required for consensus to run a modification. Modifications are subject to assessment and elimination by Wikimedia Foundation staff for legal or technical issues before the final vote. This discussion period is set to conclude on August 19, 2013, following which the Wikimedia Foundation will review the modifications to ensure that they remain usable.

The final vote is set to begin at 00:01 UTC, 22 August 2013.

(For more on the results of first round voting and legal review, see Talk:Wikivoyage/Logo 2013#First results available and Talk:Wikivoyage/Logo 2013#Finalist review.)

The logo will look better with transparment backcolor, and that at the 32px and the 16px versions will be without the "wikivoyage". בנימין (talk) 15:10, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All submissions should probably choose the same background type (white or transparent) for the final vote. I'll ask about that. --Peter Talk 17:32, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I believe two modifications are needed before the final vote, both of them just for the 32px and 16px versions:

  1. Remove text
  2. Make the icon "fatter"

Globe-trotter, are you working on these modifications? --Peter Talk 17:32, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Weight of text is too light. Not clear to read. This, that and the other (talk) 11:56, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Made basket not look like a parachute bomb, pitched (rotated) ballon a bit more, changed font, separated "wiki" and "voyage" for readability. I am sure many other variations can be better. Sorry I don't know how to remove the text for small sizes. Also, characters must be kerned better. Nicolas1981 (talk) 01:54, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Basket with gradient, Lenka Stabilo font in greens
  • Here's a version with a gradient for the basket (to make it look a bit more 3D per concerns above) and with the old Lenka Stabilo font in shades of green for a comparison (also per a suggestion above). I very, very slightly rounded the corners of the basket also. I prefer the basket in this version slightly over the above, but I don't think the Lenka font works as well as the original font above. --Peter Talk 18:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Another comment: The wider basket looks much better at small sizes, but I think it's a little too wide when larger, as in the sidebar version. I presume we could use a slightly different version for these different purposes, right? --Peter Talk 18:54, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Peter that large basket look bad in larger versions. Make it small for larger versions. Basket design can be tweaked from |_| to \_/ to see how it looks. ( i dont find better way to explain this :)) Try with different fonts also. -Nizil Shah (talk) 19:15, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Nizil Shah, using an isosceles trapezoid is one of those very simple, should-have-been obvious ideas that really improves the look. I think it looks best at every size. I use it in the following two examples, which show alternate color schemes, and alternate fonts. The fonts are in order clockwise from top left: Trajan Pro Bold, Lerotica, Lenka Stabilo, Linear Regular. I think the original color scheme is still the best--it's bold and eye-catching, classy, and suggests Brazil forests per Nicolas1981 ;) I don't have a very strong opinion about the fonts, but I think I like Trajan Pro Bold the best. The icon is already so whimsical that I think the more staid font works, while Lenka seems a bit overkill. Lenka was necessary to liven up our old, incredibly dull logo. --Peter Talk 21:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If this logo ultimately passes, which I am most afraid it might, it certainly should not be used combined with a cartoonish font, as Peter said. We could use something along the lines of Gill Sans with it - very legible and to-the-point, but not serifed or overly artsy.
The new colour propositions are going somewhere, but I'd ditch the central green stripe altogether as well, and try something in the typical base colours used for balloons, which is blue, red and yellow. Of the greens used, we could perhaps do with the pastel green on the left of the original proposal, the other two are (right one) "composting green" and (middle one) "forest green", neither of which suit a balloon well. PrinceGloria (talk) 04:55, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, who snuck aboard our balloon?
I for one think the font should be playful too. I love the Lenka Stabilo one for this reason.
Unrelated comment from a friend: Maybe could you put an earth or a suitcase instead of the gondola (basket)? Nicolas1981 (talk) 05:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ask and you shall receive. Below are color schemes in blue, red, and yellow per PrinceGloria. I still think the logo author's original color scheme is the best, though--I haven't been able to equal it. It's sharp and classy. De gustibus non est disputandum, but, ah, I think I'm going to have to dispute your gustibus. To the right is the version with suitcase, which has a nice enough aesthetic, but I think it's just too surrealist once you realize what you're looking at. --Peter Talk 07:33, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much Peter! I believe, to quote Beth Ditto, that we are indeed moving in the right direction. Let us not dispute tastes, they are subjective. Objectively, however, the versions with different colours are simply better and don't look like cabbage :D I guess the RBY combo might look a bit too sombre in those shades, I was wondering if perhaps combining the violet and light blue from one of your earlier versions with a third balancing hue (also a pastel one if you find a fitting one) might just hit the sweet spot.
I personally like the suitcase idea. It doesn't change much in lower resolutions and adds a nice touch in the high-res versions, as well as at least brings us closer to the idea of travel. PrinceGloria (talk) 19:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tried a bunch of different pastels for the central band (and desaturated & lightened the colors of the others just a tad), and the bgv variant to the right is definitely the best I came up with. But I still prefer the original at each size, and especially at 16px. --Peter Talk 20:26, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yellow might not be very printable/visible? Nicolas1981 (talk) 01:35, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was a suggestion in the poll below that brighter colors might work better. The versions on the right below are higher saturation (with Lenka font), while the ones on the left (with Deja Vu Sans) are in the original color schemes. I actually do prefer the higher saturation versions, particularly for the one in greens. --Peter Talk 22:33, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think we all need to know what the problem is. If it is the font or the colour scheme, no big deal, but tell us already. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:37, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • The arrows can't be concave quadrilaterals (per link above). This is a major element of the current design - the concavity leads your eye from one arrow to the next and brings it all together. Plus most arrow heads are that shape, so diverging from that shape is diverging from an easily recognisable arrow. --tiimta (hello) 10:03, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • May be use solid more narrow triangle with special erased form at basic side? Example, red arrow at  . Digr (talk) 12:40, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I like how this logo works without text in the tiny version.---<(kmk)>- (talk) 15:11, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I like it, nice and simple, but maybe try with two-tone arrows to make it look 3D? -mattbuck (Talk) 18:41, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I really like this logo, especially how it scales to smaller sizes, and retains integrity even without text. I think if you just change the concave angle to an arc - making it like a circle has been inscribed on the insides of all the triangles, that you would have a similar logo (especially at small size), but it's distinctly not a concave quadrilateral. Vanisaac (talk) 00:17, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is perfect. And I agree Vanisaac. The small one without the text is nice too. --DerFussi 10:09, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because it is obviously overlooked, I post the language variants here again. -- Rillke (talk) 13:38, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Russian version is most probably wrong: First, its font is too much weighted (not bold here but really black). Second, the term chosed which reads viki gid is not translating "voyage" or "trip", but the term "guide" (i.e. the tourism book) If would have used one of the following terms after the transliteration of "viki" :
    • путешествие (voyage, tourisme)
    • дорога (route, voie, chemin, voyage)
    • поездка (promenade, course, tournée, voyage, tour, chemin)
    • плавание (navigation, voyage, sailing, swim)
    • странствие (voyage, pèlerinage)
    • езда (course, balade, circulation, trafic, voyage)
    • путь (voie, route, ligne, chemin, trajet, voyage)
For simplicity of the composition, the first one is probably too long, the second term is probably the best (дорога, doroga), but I like also поездка (poezdka) which is not just about the road followed but related for to the (virtual) visit, to speak about the points of interests and things to know when traveling. I would avoid the term странствие which is too much related to religion. The two final terms are probably too short or too narrow/technical in meaning. I also like the term плавание (plavanye).
    Is there a vote for translating the term "Wikivoyage" in Russian? to submit one of: вики-дорога (read viki-doroga), вики-поездка (read viki-poezdka), вики-плавание (read viki-plavanye) ? verdy_p (talk) 14:10, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • very good Logo for a not existing sister project "WikiMaps". But nut for "WikiVoyage". Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:06, 13 August 2013 (UTC)\[reply]
  • I am very disappointed that this logo must be modified, and I don't like any of the proposed modifications. Had I known that the logo I was voting for would not be allowed, I would have voted for other proposals. In the end, I will vote for any of the modifications of this logo, because I think they are better than the other finalists; however, I don't think they are as good as the logos that had been my 2nd and 3rd choices, after your original, unmodified logo. I feel cheated and greatly regret that it doesn't seem to have been possible for management to know about the copyright issue before the first round of voting. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • To some extent I agree with Ikan Kekek, that I would have voted differently If the legal issues were known before the vote. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:54, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
