edit- I think we all need to know what the problem is. If it is the font or the colour scheme, no big deal, but tell us already. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:37, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- The arrows can't be concave quadrilaterals (per link above). This is a major element of the current design - the concavity leads your eye from one arrow to the next and brings it all together. Plus most arrow heads are that shape, so diverging from that shape is diverging from an easily recognisable arrow. --tiimta (hello) 10:03, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- May be use solid more narrow triangle with special erased form at basic side? Example, red arrow at . Digr (talk) 12:40, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- I like how this logo works without text in the tiny version.---<(kmk)>- (talk) 15:11, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- I like it, nice and simple, but maybe try with two-tone arrows to make it look 3D? -mattbuck (Talk) 18:41, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
- I really like this logo, especially how it scales to smaller sizes, and retains integrity even without text. I think if you just change the concave angle to an arc - making it like a circle has been inscribed on the insides of all the triangles, that you would have a similar logo (especially at small size), but it's distinctly not a concave quadrilateral. Vanisaac (talk) 00:17, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Is perfect. And I agree Vanisaac. The small one without the text is nice too. --DerFussi 10:09, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Because it is obviously overlooked, I post the language variants here again. -- Rillke (talk) 13:38, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- The Russian version is most probably wrong: First, its font is too much weighted (not bold here but really black). Second, the term chosed which reads viki gid is not translating "voyage" or "trip", but the term "guide" (i.e. the tourism book) If would have used one of the following terms after the transliteration of "viki" :
- путешествие (voyage, tourisme)
- дорога (route, voie, chemin, voyage)
- поездка (promenade, course, tournée, voyage, tour, chemin)
- плавание (navigation, voyage, sailing, swim)
- странствие (voyage, pèlerinage)
- езда (course, balade, circulation, trafic, voyage)
- путь (voie, route, ligne, chemin, trajet, voyage)
- For simplicity of the composition, the first one is probably too long, the second term is probably the best (дорога, doroga), but I like also поездка (poezdka) which is not just about the road followed but related for to the (virtual) visit, to speak about the points of interests and things to know when traveling. I would avoid the term странствие which is too much related to religion. The two final terms are probably too short or too narrow/technical in meaning. I also like the term плавание (plavanye).
- Is there a vote for translating the term "Wikivoyage" in Russian? to submit one of: вики-дорога (read viki-doroga), вики-поездка (read viki-poezdka), вики-плавание (read viki-plavanye) ? verdy_p (talk) 14:10, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- My bet is that the Russian Wikivoyage Community will have to hold that (s)election. -- Rillke (talk) 15:57, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- The vote already finished 9 months ago. Ain92 (talk) 07:19, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

- I am very disappointed that this logo must be modified, and I don't like any of the proposed modifications. Had I known that the logo I was voting for would not be allowed, I would have voted for other proposals. In the end, I will vote for any of the modifications of this logo, because I think they are better than the other finalists; however, I don't think they are as good as the logos that had been my 2nd and 3rd choices, after your original, unmodified logo. I feel cheated and greatly regret that it doesn't seem to have been possible for management to know about the copyright issue before the first round of voting. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:48, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- To some extent I agree with Ikan Kekek, that I would have voted differently If the legal issues were known before the vote. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:54, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

- We need some examples wit non-latin alphabets, in this logo the title is almost too much "part of the scheme". - εΔω 06:12, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Please have a look over there (you've to scroll). -- Rillke (talk) 08:04, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Pity the original proposal has to be changed! The lines are a bit too thin now making the logo look weak and transparent. --Danapit (talk) 08:18, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, this isn't working for me. I prefer the hot-air balloon logo. The arrows in this logo are too thin, and somehow I don't get the idea of travel from it. Also, there was a comment in the discussion relating to the hot-air balloon logo suggesting that the WikiVoyage logo shouldn't use the same colour scheme as Wikimedia projects as it's a standalone project like Wikipedia. — SMUconlaw (talk) 17:18, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- What about other color scheme? --Danapit (talk) 14:11, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have a strong hunch I know what the legal issue was... but this is a real pity. I don't think this stripped down version works. The original arrows suggested compass points, while this one doesn't seem to me to have a relation to travel. This emaciated version lacks the dynamism of the original, and doesn't work at all when small. Could it be resurrected in some other form? --Peter Talk 18:29, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- No hunches required - the logo cannot use concave quadrilaterals for arrows. --tiimta (hello) 11:42, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Gotta agree with Peter on this new version. The original made me think of a compass, but this new one makes me think of a star or something, and is way too faint as a browser icon. PerryPlanet (talk) 21:32, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

- Both versions are very fine logos (I even rated them higher then two other candidates), but they consist mostly of text, and are optimised for English text "wikivoyage". This'is why I'm quite against it, because for Russian "викигид" almost all the composition will be destroyed. Ain92 (talk)
- Support I support the 2-shade version of this edit as the least bad of all the variants. I still feel like they are all greatly inferior to the proposal I voted for. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:46, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Rather dull colours, but plain arrows better than two-toned. Empty arrows not good at all. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:57, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

New Variant: Arc instead of concave angle (Instead: #New Variant 4: concave rounded triangles)
edit
I have changed the arrows according to Vanisaac's proposal (at least what I understood she/he had in mind). If this logo is accepted or developed further at some stage, it needs to be reviewed by a graphics person, I don't know if I edited it correctly. This is just to have an idea what it would look like. --Danapit (talk) 07:48, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- In case this variant is legally acceptable, I like it most. --Danapit (talk) 10:53, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, much better, I didn't think of using an arc. Can we run this by legal? It's not a quadrilateral but it's still a concave arrow.. --tiimta (hello) 11:42, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Excluding the original one ...that I still do not see the issue... it's my favourite alternative, and still my first choice in case of voting. --Andyrom75 (talk) 22:05, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- i like this derivate most. maybe this one could have "shadows" (like the one above this in blue)? --Wetterwolke (talk) 11:39, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- Sorry for my late response, I was in Hong Kong just without my PC. I like this version best. --AleXXw (talk) 10:40, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry AleXXw, I'm not a fan of any of these variations. The text and the triangles no longer seem to be part of the same logo, they clash with one another. I think the arc option is as close as we'll get to your original design. --tiimta (hello) 11:44, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- You're true, arcs where my first thougt too and I love them. But I'm not sure if it's OK for the legal dept... Best --AleXXw (talk) 12:51, 13 August 2013 (UTC) PS: do you mind if I slightly change them to fit them into the metrics?
- Yes, please change them, I just wanted to see what they would look like, but I am not a graphics expert. I hope the arcs will be ok. Can we get some legal review before starting the elections? --Danapit (talk) 13:32, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Just added them @#New Variant 4: concave rounded triangles. Best --AleXXw (talk) 17:49, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Tiimta, I'm glad you identified the problem specifically. Unless the arrows are concave in some way, they push towards the text awkwardly. --Peter Talk 18:34, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- This version is using shades of blue from Wikiquote. I quite like it, although I mildly prefer the original colors. --Danapit (talk) 12:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

edit- For Those who are interested: I uploaded a file describing the metrics, construction & colours of the logo proposal. Best --AleXXw (talk) 18:34, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- Of the new variants, I like this one the best, but I think that's because it's so similar to the initial submission. My concern would be that this is not enough of a change to pass the legal review. Although I'm obviously not qualified to make that judgement ;) --Peter Talk 18:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)
- This is my favourite logo and it's variant and hope it would pass the legal review. It was said that "... the three arrow elements ... cannot be shaped as concave quadrilaterals, but they can be triangles, quadrilaterals that are not concave, or other shapes." IMO this design would fulfill it, but ... --Danapit (talk) 06:17, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I hope this passes legal, I think it's an excellent execution of the best general design. Vanisaac (talk) 06:33, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Just got the OK by the legal-team for the arc-versions, see this edit. Best --AleXXw (talk) 16:24, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I like this idea best, but I think it would look better if the concave triangles all shared the same radius. If you try to draw a circle by connecting the triangles, it looks a bit wonky. —Fredddie™
- indeed they all have the same radius, 2 units, wich is the same length than the hight of the arrow. Best --AleXXw (talk) 12:08, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- I think Freddie means that the radii of the concavities should imply a common center point for all three arrows. That is, the negative space should look like a circle. LtPowers (talk) 15:30, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- OK, missunderstood that. The problem with that solution is that there are two different variants in wich the arrows are different far away... Now the negative space is a reuleaux triangle, at least another curve of constant width ;) --AleXXw (talk) 17:11, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

editYou know already that I'm doing everything to not let Gill Sans be used in a logo. I like this and #Concave rounded triangles: Turquoise, green, blue the most, but as I'm a hobby designer and typographer, I hate Gill Sans. So here are some more fonts:

-
Open Sans
-

Comments
edit- Of the options above I like Open Sans best. I also like voyage being bold instead of wiki, but I would prefer voyage in dark gray, instead of black. What about the rest of the logo, is it based on file:WV-Logo Proposal AleXXw 3.0 var4 (Logo).svg? It is not mentioned in the file description. --Danapit (talk) 20:12, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, it's based on that. Open Sans is my ultimate favourite font, but I wasn't sure if it would fit good here. Further, I thought I had set the text in dark grey. Maybe it's very dark? Wolf Lambert (talk) 09:14, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, it's close to black on my screen. --Danapit (talk) 09:40, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- The original font is the one that I like most. But if I have to express an opinion on the above fonts I would go for linear, as it is, and for Open Sans, but with less contrast between the two words because both are equally important for this project. --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:53, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

- I am not even a hobby typographer (and I do like the Sans version), but I quite like this version, too. The text is a little too small. Would matching fonts be also available for languages using non-latin alphabet? --Danapit (talk) 12:39, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I will make the text bigger, and look if there are characters for the non-latin alphabets. Wolf Lambert (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

- I will make the text bigger, and look if there are characters for the non-latin alphabets. Wolf Lambert (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, but this font doesn't work fo me at all. I was actually (for a second) wondering what language this might be until I noticed that the presumed "K" in "Koyage" is in fact supposed to be a "V". --El Grafo (talk) 14:52, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Please look. That is NOT a K. Wolf Lambert (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have uploaded a new version with bigger text and a small v in the voyage part. Wolf Lambert (talk) 16:46, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- I prefer the cleaner look of the original submission. The logo design is fairly tech-y, which looks a bit better with a more complementary font. The WIKI part looks just a little too Wikipedia-y, and the stroke following the v does look weird--I don't think that's how I'd write it in script. --Peter Talk 21:49, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- The Pacifico font is nice, but we need to see all the possible language versions, including non-Latin scripts, to make a judgement. At any rate, as a typographer, you surely know that Gill Sans ALWAYS WINS anyway :D PrinceGloria (talk) 22:21, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, yeah Wolf Lambert (talk) 06:32, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you Wolf, although I quite like your proposal, I prefer the version with Gill Sans. Also it is evident that the unusual font upsets readability, which is worrying in a logo. --Danapit (talk) 06:17, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- I prefer the original font. Furthermore I agree with El Grafo: the initial "v" it's not so clear. --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:56, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

- Support Nice to have an alternate color version, and I think this one works pretty well. --Peter Talk 21:33, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Works for me. LtPowers (talk) 21:52, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- Support these colors, especially the green. I don't want the "meta" (red green blue) colors. So I'd like to see alternative colors like these. Rogerhc (talk) 06:00, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- Support The main issue I had with this design was the RGB colors, and I like this a lot better. Not the best, but my favorite variant of this logo. 108.14.250.111 20:05, 18 August 2013 (UTC) Soory I forgot to log in. Nick1372 (talk) 20:07, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

- Support The other two concave rounded triangle proposals (RGB and all blue) are fine, but this one is the best. Bothvar (talk) 19:41, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Why don't combine them all?
editI couldn't choose between the three so I made this (also including the original check). The font is Linear. Wolf Lambert (talk) 07:02, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

- Best one yet, you have to include the original tick to ensure backward compatibility ;) --AleXXw (talk) 17:12, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
- Done. Looks good :) Wolf Lambert (talk) 10:17, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

- Just fantastic! The crashing airplane is all we need, huh? :) Wizardist (talk) 07:54, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- ahahah AleXXw & Wolf Lambert are genius! :-D --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:08, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
- None of three proposal really convinced me. But combining a few is a very good idea. But perhaps less logos makes a better logo. It looks a bit overcrowded. Perhaps just two logos
- Airplane + balloon (+ original wikiVoyage logo)
- balloon + compass (this 120° thing by AleXXw) (+ original wikiVoyage logo)

NEVER. Far, far too dizzy.--Seonookim (talk) 06:20, 17 August 2013 (UTC)
- This logo scares me. One quality logo is better than four crammed together --Bothvar (talk) 00:59, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- I might have taken this seriously if you hadn't incorporated that ugly old Wikivoyage logo in there. No thanks! Nick1372 (talk) 20:24, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- I agree. Bothvar (talk) 19:35, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
