Hello, EPIC. Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum if you need help with something (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Happy editing!

Patroller edit

Hello.

Your account has been granted the patroller userright. This permission will allow you to mark edits and page creations as patrolled, view recent changes patrol marks and also quickly rollback consecutive revisions of an editor on a particular page. For more information on the patroller right, please see Meta:Patrollers. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Happy editing! ❄️Mykola❄️ 18:02, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

GSR edit

Hi EPIC please note that GSR is intended for wikis with no (or almost no) active sysops. Preferably we want to leave deletion decisions to the local community if there are active sysops. You might want to use User:Hoo man/Scripts/Active sysops which helps you deciding when to request deletion at GSR. Johannnes89 (talk) 20:26, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, will check that one out! I use Twinkle which has a box for requesting at GSR, and I haven't really checked each wiki that carefully, but I'll consider being more careful in the future. EPIC (talk) 20:33, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Clarification regarding your advice edit

Hello EPIC, I would like some clarification regarding the advice you gave me on User talk:ChrisWx#Edit war with 2 things:

1. I used the IRC channel and used the admin ping noted on m:RFH to report. Does it usually take a while to respond, or was there an error with sending the message? How do I know whether the message sent or not? I have had no response so I am wondering.
2. Can I still revert the LTA, but not as much as I did earlier, or should I start avoiding them as a whole and let others deal with him?

Thanks in advance, ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 00:53, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nvm, got a response on IRC, though the 2nd question stands. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 01:19, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I would say, you can revert vandals of course, but if it is clear that every time you revert them, they will revert you back - in that case, it should preferably be left to a sysop. EPIC (talk) 08:00, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I will definitely keep reverting vandalism, but thank you for clarifying, it's good to know the best way to handle those situations, especially on less active wikis than enwiki (where I usually do anti-vandal work as a rollbacker). I will keep this noted. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 17:15, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great! Regarding enwiki, they also have an essay about this (en:WP:NOROLLBACK). EPIC (talk) 17:17, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! That is a helpful essay that clears up some things I was previously wondering about. It's the kind of the approach I'm now trying to take with situations like this. ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 17:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

GRN edit

Hi, please don't process request in language that you don't speak or from project in which you aren't active (or if you don't know the policy), at least until you get some experience (or, if you want to process a request but you have some doubts, just ask!). This is completely wrong. Remember that quality is more important than speed and keeping the queue empty and you shouldn't process a lot of requests - from different projects and languages - so rapidly! Thanks :) Superpes15 (talk) 01:18, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Superpes15: I know - that's why I declined the request, I usually reject users with blocks on other projects if nothing else. I didn't notice however, that this user's talk page access was revoked and that they could not request an unblock. I should have checked a bit more carefully before adding that into my statement, but either way a different global renamer would likely have declined the request due to the block. EPIC (talk) 09:19, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
For clarification, I usually check four things before accepting renaming requests;
  1. is the user blocked on one or more projects, or is the rename sought to conceal or obfuscate bad conduct in a different way?
  2. has the user already been renamed in the past six months?
  3. has the user requested an inappropriate username?
  4. is the username too similar to an existing username, which the system reacts to?
If the answer to all of these are no, I'll usually accept their request. So, I do check before renaming, but yes, it might seem rapid sometimes. EPIC (talk) 09:54, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
"Either way a different global renamer would likely have declined the request due to the block". Absolutely wrong. The block is for "nome utente inappropriato", so they need to be renamed, otherwise they can't be unblocked... As I said, please, avoid performing rename in a language that you don't speak or from a project with particular policy that you don't know! Thanks Superpes15 (talk) 23:57, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks - I'll try to be more careful in the future, but in this case, the talk page access is revoked on itwiki according to CentralAuth, and thus I was unsure whether the rename could be performed as the user could not request an unblock even if they were renamed. Their only contribution on itwiki also seemed to be an advertising userpage. EPIC (talk) 00:04, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Indeed, itwiki has a particular policy, it's the only project in which the user talk is automatically blocked (and can't be technically unblocked). Following the practice (and the local policy) the unblock can be performed immediately after the rename (but a local sysop needs to be contacted). Usually, as local sysop on itwiki, I rename and then unblock :) No problem, we all learn by mistake, and if you don't try to perform renames, you can't be wrong, but you will never be experienced :P But remember to just ask when in doubt, there's nothing wrong, we all can learn more and more every day here (and this is one of the reason why Wiki is so beautiful) :) Superpes15 (talk) 00:11, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'll take that into account, thanks! This is my second week as a renamer so I'm still not entirely familiar with everything, but feedback is of course appreciated as it does help me improve. EPIC (talk) 00:16, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Something a little related; I saw the Steward requests/Username changes#שומר הזכויות, And the number of edits of the user who wants to change his name is small (20). I suggest (as they suggested to me ) working according to this this policy proposal, so that there are no unnecessary problems. Thanks, Neriah - 💬 - 22:23, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I also reacted to the fact that it was a little low, but, the user registered over three years ago and the edits they have made are serious. So yes, it was a bit on the border, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt since I don't believe the user, for example, will start vandalising out of nowhere, and we don't really have a clear policy regarding usurpations either. EPIC (talk) 22:31, 30 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

re xwiki edit

As you have provoked the LTA by responding, and they are now getting at you xwiki, I have added you to one of the global defensive filters that will give you some pseudo-page protection. I have curated it to match your editing/sysop profile though it may overly protect certain wiki pages in the user nss complex. Please let me know if it is overly protecting and I need to tweak that filter. Typically it would be comms from newer users where you are semi-active on the wiki. You can track global-181 if you wish, and I do keep a light eye on it when a newbie added, typically it has been working well for each user added.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unsure what you meant by provoke in this case, but thanks - I'll let you know if it's too harsh. EPIC (talk) 22:59, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
wikt:provoke: with this LTA anyone joining the game of any attention is a provocation and a cause to get you to play their trolling game. Be it xwiki talk page edits, username mimicry, repeat deletion requests or reversions on a page, etc. they will try it all to get you to react. The one who reacts best to their pissant efforts gets their focus. Best to yawn, be bored with their efforts and not feed the troll.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I knew what provoke means, I was just a little unsure how you meant. But that explains it - and yes, I usually abide by en:Wikipedia:Don't edit-war with vandals or sockpuppets and use RFH or IRC if it's case of an obvious LTA. EPIC (talk) 09:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@1234qwer1234qwer4: Everything changes "as a steward". I don't typically put stewards into that filter, nor even direct them towards that filter as its purpose is to stop the abuse of those who cannot defend themselves in those spaces, and they are typically not active in those spaces. Stewards, with their big pants on, can edit that filter, or make requests on edits to that filter.  — billinghurst sDrewth 19:59, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Comment: If you do find it appropriate to remove me from the filter, feel free to do so. EPIC (talk) 20:03, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

AGF edit

With metawiki, it is useful to AGF in certain cases where people make inexplicable edits, and to put a {{welcome}} message on their talk page. Rollback is useful, though it also can be confronting and challenging to some, so having the welcome message to point to if they escalate is helpful. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth

I have used {{welcome}}, but I usually wait with using it until I have seen that the user has made a few edits and thus likely are good-faith editors. I've had cases on my home wiki where admins have welcomed users before they have really made edits, and later instead prove to be vandalism-only accounts. So, yes, I have used the welcome template, and will likely do so in the future too, but I usually use it with caution. EPIC (talk) 09:55, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Forced renaming for a dirty name edit

Hi EPIC, hope you're fine. I just notice your restore here, Thx for that, and found that you are a global renamer, so you may help. The account name is so dirty in Arabic, and he uses that name to insult an active user for his anti-vandalism contributions. Could you help with an informal forced renaming (to any arbitrary name), because I don't want to put his name here (at formal request), Thx --Mohanad Talk 22:58, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mohanad: Hello, thanks for your concern! I'm not really sure about this situation as I do not speak Arabic, but the best thing to do if it's a pure vandalism-only account is to hide the username from the logs, and maybe contact a steward if it's a case of cross-wiki abuse, as they have the ability to lock accounts globally. For example, we have علاء, who is a steward and is native in Arabic - he would likely be the right one to contact in that case. EPIC (talk) 23:10, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thx again, hope علاء could help -Mohanad Talk 23:14, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just saw that Tegel locked the account. Thus this can likely be marked as resolved. EPIC (talk) 23:31, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello EPIC and Mohanad. I guess you can't see the edits/account now, right? This is a long term abuser. Regarding such accounts, please apply request at SRG with {{LockHide}}. Best --Alaa :)..! 18:30, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nope, the username is now suppressed for me. As mentioned I don't speak Arabic, but I'm certain Mohanad was right about the name being inappropriate. EPIC (talk) 18:40, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thx @Alaa, the name is suppressed now, but still appears at restore revision summary, is there a mass hiding solution, or should hidden one by one? --Mohanad Talk 21:54, 9 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, one by one. In my opinion, it's better to ignore --Alaa :)..! 13:25, 10 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Implementing community consensus in Belarusian Classical Wikipedia edit

Hello, dear EPIC! How are you? Could you, please, as a steward implement the consensus of the community in Belarusian Classical Wikipedia in terms of: 1) my election as an administrator (be-tarask:Вікіпэдыя:Адміністрацыя#Удзельнік:W), 2) enforcement of the rule on 3-year term limits for admins & bureaucrats (be-tarask:Вікіпэдыя:Галасаваньні/Правіла абраньня адмінаў) based on the results of the vote (6 for & 2 against)? (-1 against as inelligible) Best wishes,—W (talk) 06:56, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, we can't really implement a consensus if there isn't a consensus. The discussions are quite old (5 and 8 months each) so I don't know how well it reflects current community views. I would recommend opening new discussions on this, perhaps? EPIC (talk) 07:44, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the Belarusian community consensus has become wider with the second discussion. And in the 1st vote even the only voter against my adminship called the obstruction of vote results on the side of the bureucrat - a "dictatorship". I would also like to draw attention to the abuse of the same bureaucrat with blocking my account without any corresponding reason, based on the rules of Wikipedia. That abuse happened during the 2nd vote, that was rigged. I guess that makes the next vote problemtic & demands for the implementation of the previous ones. To put things into perspective, that same bureucrat blocked the forum for a year after my further criticism. Would it be advisable to ask for Office actions? Best wishes,--W (talk) 06:36, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, like mentioned I don't know exactly what happened here. But, we can't really act without any consensus, so it would be best trying to gain some kind of new consensus here. EPIC (talk) 06:53, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Admin actions edit

Good day. Thank you for your contributions as a steward, but I noticed that you are doing administrative stuff that isn't covered by Meta:Meta–steward relationship#Administrative actions on Meta. Such as incorrectly classified G1s, G7s and some erroneous translations. Please either apply for local adminship or leave it for local admins. Thank you. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 03:46, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, have I missed out on something here? I was of course aware of the MSR, but I've gotten the impression that stewards can take local admin actions on Meta in obvious/non-controversial cases (e.g. for vandalism or spam). I have consulted with other stewards about this before, who have given their OK (and for example, see also here.) EPIC (talk) 07:15, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Left a note there as well. G7s and other non-vandalism stuff should only be dealt with by local admins, unless they contain PII, which should be deleted and suppressed under the oversight policy. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 01:34, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Minorax: I would disagree with you here as well - my reading of MSR is that G7 is covered under that rule. I personally don't like your comment, because it creates unnecessary friction with stewards who already have to be conservative with things like these. Leaderboard (talk) 04:37, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually asking EPIC to refrain from doing administrative stuff that is not urgent enough for a non-admin to act. The only 2 points covered are blocking vandals and deleting vandalism. G7 is a speedy criteria for out of scope content, it may or may not be vandalism, if it's vandalism, it can be deleted under G1. I also stated that EPIC is free to request for local adminship so that their actions doesn't go against MSR. --Min☠︎rax«¦talk¦» 04:50, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do understand what Minorax is trying to say here, and I will be a bit more restrictive with local admin actions here in the future to take it safe. EPIC (talk) 06:01, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

A global edit filter can help edit

Hi. I recently noticed that you globally blocked User:Jack99232 for cross-wiki spam (actually "Spam-only account", but the spam is ongoing on multiple wikis including Persian Wikipedia (fawiki) for a month or so). As an admin on fawiki, I created an edit filter to prevent spam only accounts from creating spam pages and block them when they try to create the page. The filter has been active for about 3 days and correctly blocked 6 users. I was thinking that this filter can help stewards to fight the recent spam, at least by creating some useful logs. I don't know if you can see the filter itself (It's private) or its logs on fawiki, let me know if you need local access to edit filters. Best wishes, Jeeputer (talk) 08:12, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Avoided edit

Hi EPIC, Steward requests/Global/2024-w11#Global lock for Deutsche Bundesregierung is definitely not LTA Avoided. Even without LWCU that's quite obvious because the account was created using a mobile device [1], while Avoided usually doesn't use mobile devices (and Avoided usernames are usually offensive, e.g. nazi/racist/sexist hate speech or some kind of toilet „humour“). Looking at the CU Log [2] neither the provider nor the geolocation resembles anything I've ever seen from Avoided (e.g. [3]).

@Kleshkreikne I don't understand why you linked the dewiki sockpuppet investigation page for Avoided? That's hugely misleading, the account was never checkusered at dewiki (for obvious reasons, every dewiki admin could have easily told you that this is not Avoided). We've had multiple non-dewiki users falsely reporting accounts as Avoided in the past couple of months, please leave it to dewiki admins/patrollers who are familiar with Avoided to report them to SRG (if needed at all).

I suspect this account was created as a joke, perhaps by a student. The account was blocked at dewiki because the username could mislead people thinking its an official account of the en:Cabinet of Germany, but that's usually not a reason for global locking. @1234qwer1234qwer4 fyi. Johannnes89 (talk) 07:28, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

My bad. Well I thought the username implies that this was indeed Avoided. I know Avoided has been known for their inappropriate usernames in German but sorry, I’ve never dealt with a sockpuppet from other than en.wiki. I realized my inexpierence somehow has led to this problem. So okay, unlocking it is completely fine even if I might not be familiar with other language Wikipedias. I’ve never dealt with this guy, nor even ISECHIKA. So let’s deem it as a false positive. kleshkreikne. t 07:34, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, my bad too, I've usually been able to recognize Avoided (the usernames usually makes it quite obvious), but I suppose I just made a mistake. I will leave that account locked simply because it's not really worth unlocking and the username is not appropriate either (it's the name of Germany's federal government), but I'll be more careful. EPIC (talk) 07:44, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Account creation was disabled, so they might theoretically still want to rename themselves. ~~~~

I don't exactly remember this lock since it was a few days ago, but I think looked at the pattern with German usernames and IPv6 addresses. Not sure it really was Avoided now that this came up three days later, but given that the autoblock on dewiki has expired they have the ability to register a new account. User request edit

EPIC, please can you semi-protect my user subpage that ate very important for me and that page are include User:Aviram7/SimpleStatus/Install and User:Aviram7/SimpleStatus. if you semi-protect my both usersubpages on my request per WP:UPPROT, then I feel more happy ;if you feel free, so please protect them. :)~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 06:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm not an administrator on Meta-Wiki so in accordance with the MSR policy I can't place page protections. You might want to ask the administrators through Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. Thanks :) EPIC (talk) 06:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for you're response, I'm not in rush and I'll wating for time when you receiving admin rights on metawiki, so, please hold my request until you didn't not receiving administrator rights. :)~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 07:10, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
EPIC, Hello and congratulations for successfully receiving adminship on meta, now can you protect my two subpages that are mentioned by me was on first paragraph.😊~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 03:24, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, given that I'm still quite a new admin and I'm not really aware if we also have such a policy here on Meta I still think I'm going to leave this to the other administrators. In other words, you can request on RfH, and other admins will be able to evaluate it. Thanks :) EPIC (talk) 06:45, 1 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Block User IP 114.10.139.104 edit

This user vandalized cross-wiki pages by placing tags carelessly without providing information. I find this user very annoying. Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 12:04, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I don't see any particularly further abuse? They made three edits cross-wiki some hours ago where they tagged pages for speedy deletion, but I can't see that they made any more edits after that, so I'm a little hesitant about placing a global block. Also, preferrably keep global block requests to SRG, thanks :) EPIC (talk) 12:11, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
EPIC, I suspect this anonymous user is using the same IP. Make edits by placing random tags personally on the Tommy Jonathan Sinaga Wiki page.
Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 18:17, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
This doesn't seem like the same user to me? One tagged the page for speedy deletion, one removed the tag. EPIC (talk) 18:22, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid an anonymous user made a careless edit. How can such an anonymous IP address come from Indonesia (edit style) and edit the page using the same mobile device? The perpetrator is the same person using a different IP address. It seems like he has a personal grudge against the page he edited. Sorry in advance, I was just making sure. :) ~~~ Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 18:50, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations, dear administrator! edit

Congratulations, EPIC! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Adminstrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-adminconnect. You may find Meta:Admin handbook to be useful. Please also check or add your entry to the Template:List of administrators. You're also allowed to subscribe to the metawiki-admins private mailing list (subscription instructions on that page). Again, congratulations and welcome to the team. --M/ (talk) 19:09, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to the community for the support! And like I've already mentioned, I do promise to take the feedback into account :) EPIC (talk) 19:37, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Congrats! I didn't know the RfA was taking place, but if I did you would have had my support. --Ferien (talk) 20:08, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Haha, no problem :P and thank you! EPIC (talk) 20:15, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Attention please edit

EPIC, It is very clear that he is openly doing SPAM on Tommy Jonathan Sinaga BBC page. I suspect he has a grudge against the page. If you wish, see user contributions below :

Djuminten Rahmadani La Overview (talk) 19:50, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. I'm mostly going to refer to Johannnes89's comment on SRG. I'm also not too sure these pages are notable, but either way any speedy deletion requests should be handled by local administrators. EPIC (talk) 19:57, 31 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Removal of access edit

In the case of Steward_requests/Permissions#Mtodo@jawiktionary, the Japanese term "対象" as in ja:wikt:Wiktionary:管理者#信任投票 (de-sysop policy) means "target person" (in this case User:Mtodo), rather than "the person concerned" (the machine translation you showed is wrong). Prefuture (talk) 05:44, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, but I'm still rather leaving this to another steward. EPIC (talk) 07:54, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Prefuture (talk) 07:56, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, There! edit

EPIC, View this user's contributions. Seems like a personal attack on an article. There is no local administration on the Toba Batak Wikipedia, so IP Vandalism users carelessly edit articles without checking the appropriate reference sources. Can you handle IP Vandalism? This IP user edits the page carelessly. I suspect he deliberately edited the page to lower the quality. then he put a SPAM tag.

Check out the biography of Tommy Jonathan Sinaga (Toba Batak Figure) covered by RCTI Television

Batak News: en: Tommy Jonathan Sinaga, Author of Toba Batak Inspirational Stories

Take a look at the contribution style of the vandalism users below, is it worth it?

If you pay attention to his contribution, the edit is only on 1 page. very clear personal attack.. Regards! Clara Simamora (talk) 19:06, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

As I already mentioned further above, I will refer to Johannnes89's comment on SRG. I'm not sure either whether the pages are actually notable, but adding a speedy deletion to a page is not an attack and either way you should let the speedy deletion requests be handled by local administrators (or global sysops if there are none). Hello @EPIC, a user has committed vandalism on Turkish Wikisource. The user made changes containing swearing and insults in Turkish. IP range global block edit

Hi, is it appropriate to the IP address range 1.128.16.0/20 xwiki-contribsSTIP infoWHOISrobtexgblockglistabuselogbullseye to be globally blocked? It's being used by the Australian childish vandal to create accounts on wikis for vandalism. He has been repeatedly making accounts on Wikidata and Wikivoyage so I think this should warrant a global block. But, I feel like some good-faith editors will panic upon seeing that their IP has been blocked across all wikis. TheWikiCyclone (talk) 06:51, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not sure it's the best solution given that it's a big range which will cause collateral damage if blocked, and it's not the only range ACV uses. If needed, abuse filters would probably be a better solution (which there already are some). EPIC (talk) 06:54, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yeah there are filters on Wikidata that automatically block for LTA bad replacements, but recently he has been mass removing links to articles on there and there is unfortunately no filter for that. So, the admins have to deal with that themselves. TheWikiCyclone (talk) 07:01, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Long term abuse block edit

Greetings @EPIC, I noticed your block on my account for long term abuse. Kindly explain more about this to me. Thanks. Sayvhior (talk) 22:46, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

934C Block - don't understand the reason edit

2806:101e:a:b0f9:549b:a2e:35e0:8ce8 and the block ID is #579755. Greetings - I got a message that I have been blocked by EPIC as per this message, "Your account or IP address has been blocked. 2806:101E:A:0:0:0:0:0/48?, you have been blocked by Johannnes89". The reason given by EPIC: "The block was made by ?EPIC? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:EPIC). The reason given is Long-term abuse."

Starting in 2009 I made some contributions to Wikipedia for a few years. For the last several years I have not done anything until the end of March when I noticed an error for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helena_Bocho%C5%99%C3%A1kov%C3%A1-Dittrichov%C3%A1

10 of the 15 novels were listed as Wordless Novels whereas only 5 were wordless. I adjusted the list so that the ten were listed under "Other Novels/Cycles". Given that this is the first contribution/change I have made in years, I am unclear as to the basis of "long term abuse". None of my earlier contributions have been challenged. BTW I spend half the year in Mexico (where I am right now), and the other half in Canada - I am not sure if this has anything to do with the matter.

Please explain. Regards, Ken 934C (talk) 23:57, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@934C: The IP range was blocked for abuse, and might not have been directed against you. I would suggest sending an email to stewards wikimedia.org with information, and then we can take a look at it. EPIC (talk) 05:07, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Problems on tt.wikipedia edit

Hello! Today I marked cross-wiki spam from Papa2004 on tt.wikipedia.org, but was blocked by the local administrator. My edits. What should I do? Thanks, regards. Кронас (talk) 15:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - different wikis have different criteria for what can be speedy deleted and I think that what one wiki considers to be falling under the speedy deletion criteria might not fall under the same criteria for another wiki. Spam or not, the speedy deletion request was declined by the local admin, and in that scenario it's best to just leave it like that instead. EPIC (talk) 15:40, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand, but the question is about removing the global cross-wiki advertising. All other wikis have already deleted spam (example), but this wiki pointedly refuses to take any action. They have accumulated more than 10 spam articles from one abuser (globally locked). Also, blocking for one useful edit (setting a template with a deletion request) is obvious abuse. The administrator does not want to engage in dialogue or answer my questions. Кронас (talk) 15:49, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Кронас there is no universal rule that projects have to delete articles created by LTA like Papa2004. My homewiki dewiki (one of the largest projects) doesn't have a rule like en:WP:G5 and frequently decides to keep such articles, unless they are of such bad quality that they can't be fixed by our community (or if the article subject is simply not notable). While I would personally like my homewiki to adopt a rule like en:WP:G5, there is no community consensus for doing that – and just like dewiki other projects (like ttwiki apparently) sometimes decide to keep those articles which we have to accept, even if we do not like it.
Regarding your block: A ttwiki admin removed your deletion tag [4] and instead of discussing their decision with them you reverted them [5]. They therefore blocked you for repeatedly inserting deletion templates without adhering to local policy, something which you could have been prevented by discussing with them first before eventually reintroducing the deletion request. Personally I don't think a block was necessary and is quite a hard decision, I'm sure you would have stopped when given a proper warning, but given that the block is only for one week and just for the article namespace I wouldn't say it's „abuse“.
I would just ignore what Papa2004 is doing at ttwiki if they decide not to delete the spam articles. There are plenty of other projects who are grateful if you help them fighting spam/vandalism. And in one week this block is gone as well. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:15, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for such a detailed comment! After the first edit, I wrote to the administrator, trying to enter into a discussion with him - see tt:Kullanuchy_bәkhәse:Frhdkazan#Tendence (in Russian, you can translate via Google). But he chose to remain silent on 2 of my questions.
At the same time, on Wikipedia itself there is an increased activity of the spammer Papa2004, who actively rollback the placement of any templates on articles and also writes offensive comments addressed to me - examples in the edit histories [6] [7]
Administrator of this wiki make rules about significance at their own discretion. Other users also submit advertising articles for deletion, but administrator do not respond to their requests in any way - examples [8] [9] [10]. Is real big problem. Is it possible that the admin can act together with the offender?
I understand about the insignificance of that blocking, but why is it worth leaving it just like that? The spammer is laughing at us. Кронас (talk) 16:32, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
+1 to what Johannes said here above as well. I also think that a block was too harsh and I might not agree with their decision, but like it was already mentioned here, all wikis do not have the same criteria for speedy deletions. If a local administrator declines a request for speedy deletion it is better to instead just leave it as it is and let their decision be. EPIC (talk) 16:35, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please explain edit

Why did you remove VRT permissions? They have nothing to do with being an admin or crat on Wikipedia. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 03:16, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I removed them on request by a VRTS admin, so it's probably them to contact in case of any questions (volunteers-vrt wikimedia org). EPIC (talk) 06:19, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

You can use some of mass rollback scripts (for example I'm using Selective Rollback) that has "Mark rollback(s) as bot edit(s)" option. Phạm Ngọc Phương Linh ♥

Yep, I have that script, but I think I had clicked the button for another mass rollback script instead so my rollbacks were not marked as bot edits. EPIC (talk) 13:09, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Global IP Block edit

Hello @EPIC Myself Nexovia I am active contibutor of Wikipedia I have an rollback right also then I decided to contribute on WikiBooks but I was shocked by seeing that my IP has been globally block but strange I haven't literally made non edits in any projects of Wiki so I was pretty shocked by the Global block so please I request you to review it 27.34.108.148. @Nexovia: the IP in question is not globally blocked, and has never been globally blocked either. Might it have to do with a local block or an autoblock? EPIC (talk) 10:37, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
But it is saying that my IP has been blocked this is the IP 2400:1a00:b1e0:a172::/64 This is what written Your current IP address is 2400:1a00:b1e0:a172:536:f00e:118f:91da. The blocked range is ‪2400:1A00:B1E0:A172:0:0:0:0/64‬ Nexovia (talk) 10:41, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh. Well, that IP was blocked by another steward, so I would probably suggest contacting them. EPIC (talk) 10:45, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Have your Discord account If yes can you give me your username. Nexovia (talk) 10:48, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Like I mentioned the block was placed by another steward, not me. The best would probably be to contact them instead: User talk:Hoo man. EPIC (talk) 10:49, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am only asking your discord account not for this block for other purposes. Nexovia (talk) 10:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is it some kind of personal matter? I normally don't contact others through Discord. EPIC (talk) 10:55, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes I want to ask you many things so it would be better me to talk with you you're the most active and friendly one. Nexovia (talk) 10:57, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would it be possible to contact through email, for example? I also currently don't have access to Discord. EPIC (talk) 11:01, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
