I am thinking of a new format for such Translation Requests, with support for {{plural}} commands and a new $user keyword. For example:

global editinterface rights

Hei Addshore, how about requesting global editinterface rights (see Interface editors) for Addbot on SRGP#Requests for other global permissions? I think your bot is trusted much and that would help very much on all wikis, so that the bot won’t leave so many interwikis on the protected pages anymore. Otherwise, it would be very much unnecessary work manually to remove these interwikis on the protected pages on every wiki, and in many of the wikis the interwikis would get older and older, because noone cares about this there. That wouldn’t help anybody in any way. So, because your bot is AFAIK the one which removes most of the interwikis (which are on Wikidata) globally, it would be great, if it could do so also on every protected page. I don’t know how long it takes for the bot to check every page in every wiki and remove the interwikis everywhere, but normally, editinterface editors get the global editinterface rights for one year. I think this would be more than enough for this work, and I also think there would be many supporters for this request, even if I don’t know if any bot has got those global rights before, but we can try to solve this (interwiki) problem this way. :-) Greetings --– Geitost diskusjon 13:44, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Why link on official site remove in UO:ru? It was approved by administration. Why in UO:de not removed? Why it not remove in sv, simple, it, lt, pt and many others, look like racism for the Russian auditory of wikipedia. Why bot who have name Add made remove, maybe it very big mistake in source code of the bot?

Why didn't your bot remove the link to Portuguese in this edit nor in this edit? As far as I can see, the Portugues page has been part of the WD item since the start. --Njardarlogar (talk) 07:19, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Here is page at Finnish wikipedia. After Addbot removed links from the page, page did not show correctly the <math></math> stuff. It works now, because I edited the page. I saved the page with same contents, but my edit does not show up in Page History.

Addbot and abuse filters on als-WP

Hei Addshore, could you please stop your bot on als-Wikipedia? It produces just about one edit per day but more than thousand edit attempts in the abuse filter log each single day since months. The last 5000 go back to July 24. That’s a filter called "Page blanking". I’m sure that nobody on als-WP cares in any way about their abuse filter logs and those private filters since years, their filters are all set on private (just for admins), 7 active filters, 4 of them block edits like this filter 5 does with your (and others) bot’s edits. So it doesn’t make any sense for the bot to produce thousands of logs per day. It’s just more server load and noone can see anything else in those filter logs because of these bot logs (which nobody sees at all in the recent changes). Please stop that until any admin on that wiki will care again about the filters there. I think the filters there should all be switched off, cause noone cares about the logs since years, and therefore they are useless and produce only problems like this and others. This filter has also filtered away an edit of Edwardsbot and a lot of EmausBot, but not so many the last days. Can you take a look at all the other wikis, where your bot removes interwikis, if there are more filters like that which continually stop your bot, please? Is there any possibility to look up automatically, if a bot produces filter logs in any wiki?

It’s not only this filter that produces problems there. For example: Some users can’t autocreate a local account there because of those stupid filters, User:Sk!d (admin on Wikidata) has tried that 7 times now since Novembre 2012 and nobody cares about that there, Eike sauer (admin on de-WP) can’t autocreate an account there (autocreateaccount is then being blocked by the abuse filter), $traight-$hoota, also a well-known user on de-WP, can’t autocreate an account there, and so on. Perhaps you can tell them to switch their filters off, if noone cares about them, see als:Spezial:Missbruchsfilter, especially filter 1 (Inappropriate username) and filter 5 (Page blanking). There are 8 admins on als-WP, and I only see that Terfili (who is inactive there since more than a month) has changed abuse filters in the past (last time 2012). Filter 5 (Page blanking) has been changed the last time in 2009 by User:Melancholie who hasn’t any admin rights anymore. als:Wikipedia:Ich brauche Hilfe seems to be the village pump there and not only for admin requestst, but may be the right page for these kind of requests, I don’t know. Or ask an active admin about that who doesn’t know what to do then? Manuel/User:80686 is very good in technical/IT things, but not very active there, but more active on the de-WP or here on Meta. Ah, ok, I see. That’s a bit better than before, but it would even be much better, if normal users like me also didn’t get into this stupid abuse filter just because of those interwikis. I won’t do any interwikis there anymore, if noone cares about that there, that’s for sure. But now your bot can do it again, but I fear, it can’t do all the interwiki fixes all alone. Let’s see. What about et-WP? There nearly each of the bot’s edits is being marked by abuse filter 2. Also nonsense, because the filter shall exclude edits of sysops and bots ("! "bot" in user_groups"). So the Wikidata bots should also be excluded there. At least, the edits aren’t blocked there at all, but only marked. But that should be changed nevertheless. The filter is a big nonsense in itself, it tells that it logs 65.80 % of all edits. Each edit in the article namespace and namespace 10 (templates) of a normal user (non-admin and non-bot) is logged by that filter. This is how the whole filter log looks like. Recent changes: Nearly every edit is being marked by that filter. What shall be the purpose of this massive filter logging? Is this normal or can this massive filtering been taken away? Is it abuse, when a normal user edits the et-WP? Shall only bots and admins edit it? I don’t understand that. The filter also says as follows: "Warning: This filter was automatically disabled as a safety measure. It reached the limit of matching more than 5.00% of actions." But it isn’t disabled, it still marks nearly every edit. Do you understand this? --Geitost diskusjon 21:57, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

If you are not using $counter anymore then remove $counter টি from Wikidata Summary (case "bn":), If you use {{PLURAL:$1|one|$1}} then remove $counter টি & add {{PLURAL:$1|একটি|$1টি}} or could you please give your current bot Wikidata Summary. I saw your message on watercooler, I was looking for someone to give a presentation on Wikidata to the Office of National Statistics in the UK. I'm an experienced trainer but don't know much about Wikidata. Not sure where you are in the world but if you're in the UK would you be able to do it? Hi Addshore. I think that Addbot is having trouble distinguishing between two different renderings of Category:Brazil in the ml.wikipedia script. This and this. The page is the same but the URL is different. Thus it is not removing the ml link from pages such as ab, ast, av, and ay (just a few examples). The same may be true for the ml version of Category:Germany.   1. Maybe add a way to enter the language as a lang code, or add the codes to the <option>s? You already list the langs by lang code, so why not add the code to the text of each option?
    Can we do this on Meta and other non-language projects? It's not in the language list, as far as I can tell, but Wikimedia is one of the "Wiki" options. Also, why no Wikivoyage? I guess Wikidata is mostly Q-numbers anyway, so it may not be needed.
  2. Maybe you should either load "extra" local namespaces from each wiki, or allow the user to enter a namespace number directly (e.g., some Wiktionaries have Appendices)
    (this could be called a solution in search of a problem?)
  3. I hope this doesn't take up too many resources. What happens with regex .* on enwiki, for example?
This tool is great!
Regex Tester
This tool also seems to function well, at least sometimes. It does not work in all cases I tried, however. Is this intentional? (i.e., it only seems to work with one "match group".) If this is intended, then ignore this obviously.
  1. Works: pattern = (.* bar), subject = foo bar
  2. Doesn't work: pattern = (.)(.), subject = xy. Should have two matches, no?
Other potential problems
  1. I don't understand why the first line in the matches output (e.g., "array(1) {") is indented so much. Bug or feature?
  2. If the text of either box contains </textarea>, then the rest of the box will be interpreted as raw HTML. Similarly, a character entity (e.g.,  ) will be interpreted as the character itself. This might actually be a feature, though...

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

Hi Addshore! I discovered a bug in your grep-tool: The generated URLs are wrong for Wikipedia, they start with http://de.wiki.org/ instead of de.wikipedia.org. I didn't test other projects, but I guess it's just because the database is named dewiki_p instead of dewikipedia_p, so it should happen only for Wikipedia. When you fix this, you could also change the URLs to protocoll-relative ones. Hi, Any chance you can run your Addbot on Commons to clean up some of the interwikis there. Commons is a bit different from other wikis since most links are from Commons Categories to Wikipedia Articles and those should remain as is for time being. However task that would not be controversial would be to remove interwikis from Commons pages if they point to pages within the same namespace on Wikipadia and make sure they are added to wikidata pages. In addition one could populate Commons_category property based on Commons category interwiki links which point to wikipedia articles. I am contacting you because of your support for Global settings in the 2016 Community Tech Wishlist. Global preferences are now available for beta testing, and need your help before being released to the wikis.

  1. Read over the help page, it is brief and has screenshots
  2. Login or register an account on Beta English Wikipedia
  3. Visit Global Preferences and try enabling and disabling some settings
  4. Visit some other language and project test wikis such as English Wikivoyage, German Wiktionary, the Hebrew Wikipedia and test the settings
  5. Report your findings, experience, bugs, and other observations

Once the team has feedback on design issues, bugs, and other things that might need worked out, the problems will be addressed and global preferences will be sent to the wikis.

Welcome to the first issue of the Timeless newsletter! This issue is being sent or forwarded to everyone who has at some point expressed an interest in the project, give or take, as well as a couple of other potentially relevant pages, so if you would like to continue (or start) receiving this newsletter directly, please sign up for further updates on the meta page.


The news:

The Timeless grant has been selected for funding, and the project is now underway!

While I've had a somewhat slow start working on the project for health reasons, I'm pleased to announce that everything described in the proposal is now either happening, or on its way to happening.

Current progress:

  • The project now has a hub on Meta to serve as a directory for the various related pages, workboards, and local discussions and help pages. It's probably incomplete, especially with regards to specific language projects that might have local pages for Timeless, so if you know of others, please add them!
  • Outreach: I've been talking to various people and groups directly about skinning, desktop/mobile interfaces, project management, specific component support, and other things, and have begun to compile a very shoddy list of skinning problems and random issues on mw.org based on this. Some of this may inform the direction of this project, or possibly this project will result in building a more proper list that can then be used for other things. We shall see.
  • Some development - task triage, code review, bug fixing, and various rabbit holes involving ...overflows.

General plan for the future:

  • Triage the rest of the workboard.
  • Catch up with all the talkpages and other bug reports that have been left various other places that are not the project workboard
  • Do all the bug fixes/features/other things!
  • Some proposals aimed at Commons and Wikisource in particular (maybe, we'll see)

Essentially, the grant as written shall be carried out. This was the plan, and remains the plan. Timelines remain fuzzy, but while there have been some initial delays, I don't particularly expect the timeline for project as a whole to change a whole lot.

Also, for anyone at Wikimania right now: I am also at Wikimania. Come talk to me in person!

FileImporter and license migration

Hi!

Do you know how to set up pages like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:FileImporter/Data/vi.wikipedia so that it can convert license migration correctly?

GFDL and templates based on GFDL usually have the option to make license migration possible and they used arguments like:

  • migration=relicense / chuyển đổi=tái cấp phép
  • migration=redundant / chuyển đổi=trùng lắp
  • migration=not-eligible / chuyển đổi=không thỏa mãn
  • migration=opt-out / chuyển đổi=không đổi

Example
