Help using sitelinks

On the page Special:SetSitelink I got asked for 3 elements: ID, Site ID and Link to website

but I get this error message:

The site ID "itwiki" is unknown. Please use an existing site ID, such as "enwiki".

The ID "Q23" is unknown to the system. Please use a valid entity ID. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hyperreview (talk) 11:18, 15 January 2022 (UTC)

Rollout of the new audio and video player

Please help translate to your language

Hello,

Over the next months we will gradually change the audio and video player of Wikis from Kultura to Video.js and with that, the old player won’t be accessible anymore. The new player has been active as a beta feature since May 2017.

The new player has many advantages, including better design, consistent look with the rest of our interface, better compatibility with browsers, ability to work on mobile which means our multimedia will be properly accessible on iPhone, better accessibility and many more.

The old player has been unmaintained for eight years now and is home-brewn (unlike the new player which is a widely used open source project) and uses deprecated and abandoned frameworks such as jQuery UI. Removing the old player’s code also improves performance of the Wikis for anyone visiting any page (by significantly reducing complexity of the dependency graph of our ResourceLoader modules. See this blog post.). The old player has many open bugs that we will be able to close as resolved after this migration.

The new player will solve a lot of old and outstanding issues but also it will have its own bugs. All important ones have been fixed but there will be some small ones to tackle in the future and after the rollout.

What we are asking now is to turn on the beta feature for the new player and let us know about any issues.

You can track the work in T100106

Thank you, Amir 17:59, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Is there a problem?

I can't reach en.wiki and downdtector lists it as unreachable for many people - 1840 reports and climbing. - Bri (talk) 23:06, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

There is a problem with the datacenter that serves users in the West Coast / Pacific regions ("ulsfo"), it's been temporarily disabled while the SRE team looks into the cause. But you should be able to connect to Wikipedia just fine now. Legoktm (talk) 23:09, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
Confirmed, it's back. And downdetector reports are falling. Will this be discussed somewhere? Maybe Wikitech-l? - Bri (talk) 23:11, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
Sorry for the trouble! This was caused by an interruption in network service between our ulsfo data center and some parts of the Internet. As Lego says, we're routing user traffic to other data centers while we troubleshoot further, so everything should work normally again.
For more details, watch for an incident report posted to wikitech:Incident status in the next few days. RLazarus (WMF) (talk) 00:03, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. For the record, downdetector had a peak of 1,839 reports at 1451 UTC-8 (Pacific), a little more than an hour ago. - Bri (talk) 00:11, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Help with adding Auto-Citation in my Home Wikipedia

I have been redirected here by one of you stewardess or whatever you call the role of a Wikimedian.

A bit of summary: I wanted to add an auto-cite in Visual Editor of Wikipedia Tagalog similar to that of English Wikipedia. Since I am not in control of the functionality and the codes of Wikipedia, can someone add it in our Wiki please? I can help in the translation and formatting and some admins too. Please ping me for immediate reply. --Likhasik (talk) 06:30, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

@Likhasik: Hi, please see Requesting wiki configuration changes to request enabling Citoid (though e.g. phab:T222956 implies that this might be pretty much self-service). Thanks!, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 07:17, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
@AKlapper (WMF): If it’s self-service, this page is exactly the right place to ask, not Phabricator.
@Likhasik: To follow mw:Citoid/Enabling Citoid on your wiki, you partly need administrator or interface administrator rights on Tagalog Wikipedia (steps 1 and 2a), partly no extra rights unless the citation templates are protected (step 2b). Feel free to ask if the tutorial is unclear, but your community has the rights to do this yourselves. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 15:42, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Ukraine

Hello! I want to address a mistake not of a technical but of an ideological nature. Why, in mid-March 2022, does Wikipedia still allow discussions about the spelling of the preposition "on" / "in" next to the name of an independent country? I am a philologist, and more importantly, a humanist. That's why I'm for sure aware of how language and rhetoric could affect the reader's worldview. I would like to start with making changes in the russian translation of the article about Vyacheslav Chernovol. Thanks for the answer!

Hi, this page is for technical wiki questions. For content, you'll need to ask your question on the Wikipedia that you refer to. (PS: Please sign your posts.) Thanks, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 07:25, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Cross-wiki linking not working for... some reason?

I was trying to link the English wiki article for Arnold McCuller in the Portuguese Wikipedia like this: Arnold McCuller, but it resulted in it not showing. A similar test I made in the English Wikipedia's sandbox produced the same result, but it works just fine here on Meta. Is it just my browser or is it some weird glitch? Wizzito (talk) 04:37, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

The correct syntax for making a link is with a colon at the beginning: Arnold McCullerArnold McCuller. Without the colon, it may be interpreted as an interwiki link and added to the left sidebar. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:29, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Social Profile $wgUserStatsPointValues

Hey commuinty,

i am fairly new to MediaWiki, so i am very glad if you can help me.

We want to use the Social Profiles to give Points for different Tasks a User has done.

I allready checked the following pages

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SocialProfile/Technical_documentation

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SocialProfile

but i didn´t find all events i was looking for.

The Idea is to give Points for the following actions

-User signs in to the plattform for the first time

-User adds a profile picture for the first time

-User creates a page (everytime)

-User Adds content to a page (everytime)

-User approves a page (everytime)

-user participates in a discussion (everytime)

-is there also a posiblity to give Points for custom events? Like visiting a Page?

e.g.

$wgUserStatsPointValues['edit'] = 50

like

$wgUserStatsPointValues['approvecontent'] = 10

$wgUserStatsPointValues['visitaspecialpage'] = 10

$wgUserStatsPointValues['participateindiscussion'] = 10

$wgUserStatsPointValues['customevent'] = 10

thx much in adv.

My first java script code

I have never written Java Script in my entire life (besides a few "Hello world" programs ;)) and want help with this script. It will start simple, and all I want for now is a button somewhere on the sidebar that says "Create null edit", mostly as an example to add the buttons I actually want. Please can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks! L10nM4st3r (talk) 11:07, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r: You have some typos in the second line: it should be e.preventDefault(), not e.eventDeafult(). (This is why I love TypeScript: if it was TypeScript, it wouldn’t even compile, and the compiler gave a helpful error message. But we don’t have TypeScript support for on-wiki scripts.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 15:50, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
Okay, I fixed it. I don't see any buttons that say "Create null edit" still. Where are they even ment to appear anyway? Or is the other script I read it from also not giving a button either? (The Wikipedia null edit script) Or do some browsers not support this (I checked Java Script was on before I asked this. It is.) L10nM4st3r (talk) 17:17, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
I have changed the script after a bit of reading and experementing. The new idea is to move the "move" tab too the tools sidebar. Please can somebody tell me why it won't work. I copied it from the 2013 archive file. L10nM4st3r (talk) 22:43, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, the 2013 is the issue. addOnloadHook has been deprecated since 2013 (commit fcf4934a5275) and recently has been removed. You should use $ (a single dollar sign as the function name) instead. By the way, this version of your script works for me, it puts the link in the More ▼ dropdown menu between the search field and the watch star. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:41, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
I feel as if I put it in the wrong place... It still doesn't work for me. I even wrote a quick test css file to hide my contributions link that I used in wikibooks, but it didn't work! I wrote it correctly! (I'm using the monobook skin, if it helps) L10nM4st3r (talk) 08:05, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
If you opened a web browser JavaScript console and typed in importScript('User:L10nM4st3r/global.js') (when on Meta-Wiki page), you would see Uncaught SyntaxError: unexpected token: ')'. At the moment, you have got too many closing parentheses on the second line. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 22:21, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
I accidentally found myself on a page that led me to the MonoBook.js file used by everyone who uses MonoBook. I saw an interesting function, could I call it from my java script file, or do I need to make a new "MonoBook.js" file in my userspace? Or can I not call it atall and need to copy the code? The function is "addToolboxLink" L10nM4st3r (talk) 08:03, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
If you are referring to this file (please always refer using links, so that I don't have to guess), then yes, you can call it from your code, but you can only do it from your local monobook.js file. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:31, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Also, I made a global userpage here, but if I press on a link to my userpage in wikibooks, it says the page does not exist, but when I press the userpage tab, my userpage from here shows. Does making an empty page work? Or is there something else I must do? L10nM4st3r (talk) 20:08, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
It was something I did wrong! User "L10n4st3r" doesn't exist... Lol. I do that a lot. My bad. L10nM4st3r (talk) 20:20, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
I can't make it work and have no explanation as too why. This is wasting my time as well as yours, so I give up. Maybe some other day when I get a web browser that can check for errors, I'll try again. Thanks for trying to help, though. L10nM4st3r (talk) 20:38, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

not every name begins with a capital

How may i configure mediawiki to preserve and present user names, in particular not automatically uppercase their name anywhere other than however the user entered their name? And the same for their username? Should i presume that usernames are case insensitive? Fine if so, but it remains it would be preferable to preserve and present it as the user entered it.--Gregrwm (talk) 01:46, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

add section to a manual special page

I am a fresher in Mediawiki. I was practicing 'example' extension provided by the Mediawiki cite. In the example extension, there is a special page called 'HelloWorld' with a title 'Bar' and some content. I want to add some sections to this page. For example: 1. Bar

  hello bar how are you

1.1 Bar 2

  Hello there..

I have seen that $out->setPageTitle() can set a title and header for the page. I want to know if I want to add content to this page, how can I do that — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 174.2.10.111 (talk) 20:14, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

$out->addHTML() I think. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 09:44, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

Preferred location for crosswiki site scripts?

Hi! Some of my scripts are often used site-wide (e.g. TemplateScript is loaded in s:bn:MediaWiki:Common.js via User:Bodhisattwa/cleanup.js). Currently they're loaded as Wikimedia Toolforge static files, but Toolforge isn't considered part of the production Wikimedia infrastructure so that causes Content Security Policy warnings now. To avoid that, I'll need to move all the scripts to wiki pages instead. So the question is: where should such scripts live? Should I create pages like User:Pathoschild/TemplateScript.js, create MediaWiki pages, turn them into gadgets, or something else? —Pathoschild 16:44, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

@Pathoschild Unfortunately, gadgets don't work cross-wiki. In general it's not a good idea to be loading user scripts into site javascript, as there are increased security risks. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 01:21, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
So what's the recommended way to have central scripts for crosswiki reuse? I see some custom scripts like MediaWiki:Tabs.js which are loaded into MediaWiki:Common.js; MediaWiki pages on Meta might be the safest way to do it, so there's a central place that can be monitored and only users with editinterface can change them. —Pathoschild 02:44, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
@Pathoschild: Is the current scenario making some of your scripts misbehave or working incorrectly? In my case, so far, I don't remember having any issues with them and I think having a version-control system such as Git to document changes works nice. May I interest you in taking a look at https://gitlab.wikimedia.org? Perhaps you could set your master GitHub repos to mirror their contents over there? Since GitLab is under the *.wikimedia.org umbrella, I think that'd help bypass the CSP blocks. Sincerely, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:59, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Re causing issues, at least one script reference was removed by a sysadmin (T304151) and another was replaced by a local wiki page that won't get updates (T304208), so seems we'll need to figure it out soon.
I'd be fine mirroring the repo to the Wikimedia GitLab, if it'd qualify and the CSP restrictions would allow it. I don't see any CSP headers being returned though, so I'm not sure how to check. @AntiCompositeNumber: I saw your name on some pages about the GitLab, so you might know more? —Pathoschild 01:47, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
For what it's worth, we'd be thrilled to have folks develop scripts on the GitLab instance. I'm not entirely sure about the practicalities of the CSP situation, but it's probably worth investigating. BBearnes (WMF) (talk) 22:59, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Code typing problem on the Old English Wikipedia

Since 22 April 2022, something has gone wrong in coding behindthe Old English Wikipedia ('angː'), making it impossible to type wiki code on the code-editing page. (My edits since then have involved voluminous copy-and-paste or typing in Word before pasting into the code editing page.) It is not affecting any other wiki as far as I can see.

I have found several oddities so far as I type, and they all prevent the effective typing of wiki code, for exampleː

  1. Typing a double square bracket, or , turns them into a curly single quote: ʽ or ʼ .
  2. A colon comes out as a similar but different character (ː) which of course does not have the same effect in wiki coding.
  3. An asterisk does not appear but typing it puts an umlaut or trema over the following letter;
  4. Tildes cannot be typed either.
  5. Likewise plus sign, percentage sign, dollar sign etc and possible others I have not come across.

Does anyone know why this is happening and can they fix it?

Thank you. I have not worked out how to fix it or what I am looking for or where to look for it. It turns out that it is just me: on any computer and any browser, the result is the same if I am logged in. If I am not logged in or if I borrow someone else's log-in, I can edit as normal. Hogweard (talk) 11:54, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
It is all sorted out. It turned out to be the daftest thing you could imagine: the wee icon at the top right of the edit screen was set to 'International phonetic alphabet'. I changed it to 'Use native keyboard', and it has been back to normal! Hogweard (talk) 16:09, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

See User:L10nM4st3r/monobook.css. It doesn't work. It worked when I typed it in Wikibooks:User:L10nM4st3r/monobook.css (as does everything else that is there). I made sure the skin I use is the same everywhere, which is monobook. Could somebody please explain what is happening? Thanks. L10nM4st3r (talk) 11:03, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r: You copied it incorrectly: visibility: none isn’t valid, only display: none is. By the way, I suggest you to use User:L10nM4st3r/global.css instead (unless you want to hide the logout button only specifically on Meta and Wikibooks), as global.css automatically loads on all Wikimedia wikis (and also all skins, but that doesn’t matter if you use Monobook everywhere). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:02, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Hiding objects on all but one page

On Wikibooks, how can I setup Monobook.css to hide an element on all pages exept the Watchlist? Thanks! L10nM4st3r (talk) 14:52, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r: See mw:Manual:CSS. If that doesn't help, please be way more specific and describe the underlying problem to solve and not only the solution that you have in mind. :) Thanks, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:58, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
So I want to hide the siteNotice element unless I'm on my Watchlist since that is the sort of thing that I would want on my watchlist but not on every single page. I can't seem to make a working .js file as my device doesn't seem to support it, so that is out of the picture. L10nM4st3r (talk) 15:22, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
@L10nM4st3r: You can exclude things with the :not() selector. Data applicable for the whole page is usually stored as class names for the <body> element. Special pages have two page-specific classes: one that all pages have, which contains the translated special page name (e.g. page-Spezial_Beobachtungsliste in German) and one that is specific to special pages and contains the canonical (English) special page name (mw-special-Watchlist); I suggest using the latter, as that works across languages, should you want to reuse the snippet elsewhere. Putting together, in this case you need
body:not(.mw-special-Watchlist) .mw-dismissable-notice {
	display: none;
}

@L10nM4st3r: Actions have action-* classes on <body>action-view, action-edit, action-history etc. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:35, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
First, how can I specify more than one thing to exclude (comma-seperated seems to not exclude it on any page), and second, how do I only include a specific page? Thanks a ton so far!L10nM4st3r (talk) 08:05, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r: According to MDN, comma-separated entries should work within :not(), but you can just put more than one :not() after each other (e.g. body:not(.action-view):not(.action-edit) applies when the action is anything but view or edit). Including a specific page is pretty easy: just leave out the :not() part, e.g. body.mw-special-Watchlist will apply only on the watchlist.
When you preview the edit, the action is no longer edit, but submit, so you need to include/exclude .action-submit as well. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:11, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Mejorar la pagina.

Buenos dias.

Douglas Leal.P. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 206.1.189.109 (talk) 11:11, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Error while trying to use parsoid (vendor/mediawiki/parsoid/bin/parse.php) in docker

I am trying to use parsoid to convert wikitext to html using `php parsoid/bin.parse.sh --wt2html --inputfile <file.txt>`. I am using the latest docker version from https://hub.docker.com/_/mediawiki. But i keep getting

``` Warning: require_once(/var/www/html/vendor/wikimedia/parsoid/tools/../vendor/autoload.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/vendor/wikimedia/parsoid/tools/Maintenance.php on line 117
``` A similar error and discussion were done here but things mentioned in the thread don't work. How can I fix this/use it to convert to html?

Let me know if any other documents are needed. Thank You --Sajangohil11 (talk) 11:01, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

This sounds like a third-party MediaWiki installation question for the Support Desk and unrelated to a Wikimedia wiki. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 10:10, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

@Domina Kennya: Hi, we don't know what an "mfc share" is and how this is related to Wikimedia wikis. Please see the info box on top of this page and please provide clear steps and links that allow someone else to reproduce a problem. (PS: Please also sign your posts.) Animated PNG message

When visiting a file page for an animated PNG, for example c:File:Animated.png, this message appears: Note: Due to technical limitations, thumbnails of this file will not be animated. Now, to me, this isn't true. The thumbnail is very well indeed animated for me. I don't know if it has anything to do with the browser you're using or anything like that but my guess is that it does not. If we see more examples at c:Category:Animated PNG, some are animated and some are not. Maybe the phrasing in the note should be changed from will to might or something like that? I couldn't realky find where the note is located but if you view the source it says that it's called mw-noanimatethumb.Jonteemil (talk) 00:21, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

@Jonteemil: Thumbnails (like this one) are not animated for me. In my understanding "thumbnails" are any files with dimensions (width and height in pixels) that are not the original dimensions. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 10:17, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
@AKlapper (WMF): Okay, my bad. I thought thumbnail was the viewing of the file which is rendered on the file page. Are all animated PNG supposed expecter to be animated on the file page, because some are not for me?Jonteemil (talk) 17:34, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
@Jonteemil: I don't know the details for PNGs. However for animated GIF thumbnailing, the Thumbor backend software is configured with MAX_ANIMATED_GIF_AREA = 100000000 (calculated via width * height * framecount). If the number is higher then the file will not be animated (because performance reasons). --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 17:48, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

Mediawiki on a Synology NAS and accessible outside the local network

Thank you in advance for your help with this. I am running my MediaWiki on a Synology NAS and I would like to make it available over the Internet, in other words outside the local area network. I access by Synology via QuickConnect. I have searched for an answer, but did not find a definitive solution. Other Synology NAS applications, such as those for photos, files, etc. work fine. I would like to avoid having set up special configurations the router, etc. as those devices might get swapped out over time. Thanks, PHIL

Parsoid, difference between --standalone and --integrated mode

I am using parsoid from cli using `php parsoid/bin/parse.php --wt2html --integrated --inputfile file`. I checked the code and there are 2 modes, --integrated and --standalone. What is the difference between both? --standalone had some errors, for that I had to add some classes to vendor/autoload.php but it is slower (and causes http 429 error when i try to parse ~100 files).

--integrated is when you run Parsoid against a MediaWiki install. Most day-to-day Parsoid development happens in standalone (currently default) mode. When we run tests (via parserTests script), Parsoid expands templates natively (which works fine for parser test templates which are simple and don't use complex parser functions). But, when you use the parse.php script, "standalone" is deceptive / misnamed. It references a remote wiki (default English wikipedia, Use the --domain or --apiURL CLI params to change to a different MediaWiki install) and accesses information (config, template expansion, extension expansion, media info) via network calls. This is a holdover from the days when Parsoid was in Node.js as a separate service and even production usage of Parsoid relied on network API calls to MediaWiki. In PHP, we retained this functionality as a useful tool for debugging Parsoid against the Wikimedia cluster (our main development target, and for bugs reported for content on those wikis). But, the API calls are all sync blocking network calls, and so for any sizeable page, it is going be pretttty slow. So, parse.php script in "standalone" mode is primarily only a development and debugging aid and isn't usable for anything more serious. But, with the --integrated option against a local wiki on the same filesystem, it is pretty useful. MW_INSTALL_PATH=../core php bin/parse.php --integrated ...other-cli-args... is how you would use it. Hope this is helpful. SSastry (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Idea: Tipping (From Wikiquote)

Tipping would be a feature where an editor could tip another editor (that has enabled the option), this would function the same way as an "thank", but would send a monetary payment instead of just giving the receiver an notification, this could also give the WMF a small cut (maybe 10%). What do you think? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 13:02, 5 June 2022 (UTC)

This is not a request "from Wikiquote". Nobody at Wikiquote has endorsed Ilovemydoodle's idea. ~ Ningauble (talk) 00:23, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Thank you letter from me and my former school for the outstanding browser compatibility.

By 2013, most computers at our school were already on Windows 7, but we also had older computers that still ran Windows 2000 and XP, with Internet Explorer 6. On some days, the newer computers were reserved, so we had no choice but to use the old Windows XP and 2000 computers.

On the old computers, we could usually not install a more modern browser, I guess due to lack of system privileges. Few of the computers had Opera or Firefox installed, but most did not. Many sites were broken and difficult to browse in Internet Explorer 6, but Wikipedia worked like a charm!

I can only imagine how much effort must have gone into persisting support for a decade-old browser, and for that, I and my then class mates and teachers would like to thank you. It was worth it! You spared us lots of headache!

Obviously, supporting IE6 today would not be worth it and the TLS 1.2 requirement prevents it from connecting anyway. But thanks for keeping it up as long as you did. Your team did an outstanding work.— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Octobod (talk) 11:27, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

IPv6 on payments.wikimedia.org?

The domain "payments.wikimedia.org" is a (heavily customized) wiki used for processing payments for donations. Unlike other WMF wikis, payments.wikimedia.org doesn't support IPv6. Why is this, and is it possible for IPv6 support to be added to payments.wikimedia.org? 2600:4040:500B:4200:71DF:DE60:F89F:9EF2 03:03, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

Lua errors in the references in the nso Wikipedia

I have added a number of templates/modules/settings to nso wikipedia as they had not been present in articles that I have edited. I did revert the " Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration" CS1 template which seems to have removed the lua errors on the nso.(Cape Town) page. However the template in the nso.( Ramaphosa) page seems to be left justified now and is much wider that it should be. There are also a number of lua errors in the references after the "cite news " template was used / invoked. Would you have any suggestions as to how to go about debugging these errors? Ptpare (talk) 19:40, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

@Ptpare: You should make sure to use the same version of all related modules. Currently nso:Module:Citation/CS1/Date validation and nso:Module:Citation/CS1/Whitelist are both over half a decade old, which means that they’re probably no longer compatible with other, freshly imported modules. (P.S. Please link to the affected pages. I found nso:Ramaphosa, North West only by chance; if someone would have resolved the issue before I started investigating, I’ve had no idea whether the issue is no longer present or I just landed on the wrong page.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:54, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for this. I have updated more of the templates and this page (Cape Town) has less errors now, but there are still some errors left. How would I gain administrator rights to upload a whole batch of recent templates from the English wikipedia to the Northern Sotho (Sepedi) Wikipedia? Alternatively, how could I go about finding who has administrator rights on the Sepedi wikipedia?
Ptpare (talk) 08:51, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
@Ptpare: If you want to become an admin, you need to have some sort of community discussion in which other users show their support (if there’s a usual local procedure, follow that, otherwise a village pump discussion with at least a few support votes should be enough), and then ask for the right to be set on Steward requests/Permissions. If you just want to have the pages imported, you need to contact the global sysops, since there are no real users in the local admins list (User:Abuse filter is just a technical user). But not even that may be necessary, as after one more import, the 21 June version of Cape Town shows no more Lua errors. (At least if you open it for editing and preview it; the oldid link didn’t get rid of the errors for some reason, maybe because of caching.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:06, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

What is happening

Why do some articles appear to have a larger font size than normal on my iPad. It doesn't happen on my iPhone, and I haven't tested it yet on the computer. I have looked and I haven't seen any announcement about changing the font size. It also seems like the articles with larger font size are more scrunched together. It isn't a problem with my iPad since I tested it, and Miraheze (which is the closest wiki site to Wikimedia in terms of software and infrastructure) doesn't seem to have this problem. Misleading user settings option regarding data deletion

In one's user preferences there are two options regarding "account data". The first is "Access account data", which shows you a list of information about your account, such as your user rights, edit count, registration date and email address. Below that is the option "Delete account data". One might assume that those two are related and that you could delete your data from the site. However, the second option merely restores your user settings if you have made changes to them. It won't even remove your email address from your account.

The "Delete account data" text is misleading IMO, as it's more and more common for websites to let users control and even delete their user data. You can't actually delete any data that Wikimedia has on you (at least not by clicking the restore link), and instead you can only reset the settings that you have changed yourself. I think the "Delete account data" should be titled something else, like simply "Restore user settings". (I think it was titled something else and it was changed to this version recently, but I don't remember what it used to be.) kyykaarme (talk) 12:41, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

The link itself is clearly labeled as Restore all default preferences (in all sections), the same as what it used to be before phab:T226325; it was just moved, not renamed. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:44, 12 June 2022 (UTC)
@Tacsipacsi Thanks for the Phab link! So, here's the culprit: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/790568/4/languages/i18n/en.json. The link was moved in May, and the "Delete account data" was added next to it. Regardless of what it says on the link itself, it's misleading to have a label that says "Delete account data" next to a link that won't delete any actual data. It should be labeled something closer to what it says on the link itself, like "Reset user settings/preferences". It's repetitive next to the link that says basically the same thing, but at least it's not misleading. The tech savvy person who opened the phab ticket was confused about what the restore link actually does, and I would imagine that users could be even more confused when the label says "delete" and the link says "restore". These texts are also translated by volunteers into multiple languages, so they should be as unambiguous as possible. kyykaarme (talk) 20:26, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
This should be fixed, soon. (patch, comment). Thanks for the question and notes. :) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:41, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Maps does not show all water in blue?!

Please compare the original Openstreetmap https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=11/49.0811/33.3195 and the rendering in Wikimedia maps: https://maps.wikimedia.org/#10/49.0887/33.3064. The latter does not show the large body of water in the upper left. We're talking about the Kremenchuk Reservoir https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/2289192. Could this be an issue with the style "OSM Bright for Mapbox Studio" that Wikimedia uses, or is this another problem? Does anybody know where to report or how to fix this? Thanks, AxelBoldt (talk) 21:47, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

AxelBoldt, huh, nice spot. Looks like the Wikimedia Maps in that area are out of date. (Compare [2] and [3], which are the same coordinates.) It doesn't look like a bug report is necessary in this case, though, as it seems T285668 is already filed on the problem. Perryprog (talk) 21:59, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
Well, that bug report hasn't seen action since February. Also, the log https://wma.wmflabs.org/osmdb.txt appears to imply that the latest OSM database has been successfully imported today. AxelBoldt (talk) 22:18, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
Huh, good point. That definitely doesn't seem to be the case, even when comparing areas in other locales, which all have out of date tiles. Sorry about the stale Phab ticket—I was reading through it but hadn't gotten to the bottom of it quite yet. I'll ask around a little, but feel free to comment on that ticket with what you noticed of course. Perryprog (talk) 22:25, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
I was just told that T285668 is not about the official Wikimedia maps project, so I opened a new bug report at T311679. AxelBoldt (talk) 00:32, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Agh, can't believe I didn't notice that. Sorry for sending you down the wrong path, there. Thanks for filling the ticket! Perryprog (talk) 01:12, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi team,

I am looking for guidance on your view of long-term support for your Elasticsearch plugin, search-highlighter.

Apologies if I am in the wrong place! Please can you send me in the right direction if so?

Kind regards, Kris 2A00:23C5:C1A8:CE01:D81B:79E0:EA4C:C30C 15:43, 30 June 2022 (UTC)

In terms of long term support, elasticsearch 7.10.2 will almost certainly be the last version of elasticsearch this is available for. Various policies prevent us from moving forward with later version of elasticsearch. There is a good chance, although not yet certain, that this will be migrated to opensearch and future releases will be against that. EBernhardson (WMF) (talk) 21:22, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
This is a really great response, despite the bad news. Thank you! 2A00:23C5:C1A8:CE01:4C3E:2A45:D508:AD1E 08:31, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Issue with Discussions

A lot of us, including admins, have noticed that since the early am hours when clicking on reply for a TP it no longer works. It either freezes up pages or we get an error message.

The error reads: “ Could not find the comment you're replying to on the page. It might have been deleted or moved to another page. Please reload the page and try again.” and has an ok button at the bottom that takes the editor back to the TP. The conversation is there. It also doesn’t work on other pages either like VIP and AN boards so it seems like it is wiki wide or it may just effect Simple (that’s the only one I’m active on). Thanks and please be sure to ping me so I can get the response. Much appreciated! PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 03:17, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Hide partial block & temporary watchlist stuff

  1. As of now the current hack to remove so called "partial block" is not working - it is removing the block details box and exposing partial block specific box(safemode). I guess I can restore the block detail boxes with mw-block-restriction but how do I kill the inputbox -- part of Partial Block?
  2. I'd also like to hide this "duration" field in watchlist messages.

Thanks in advance! — regards, Revi 16:49, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Api to read data from wiki

Lua tables are confusing

here

Please explain how to

  1. Combine multiple tables, without duplicate values
  2. Turn the combined table to comma seperated text.

Thank you. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 09:12, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, but it isn't clear from that module what tables (multiple) you want to combine. You may want to take a look at mw:Module:TableTools, which contains utility functions for manipulating tables.
To turn a table to comma separated text, do table.concat(values, ', ') or mw.text.listToText(values). --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:38, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I havent finished making it. I want to combine the table with another table, which are both output of the get_matchup function. But I will check out the link. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 15:27, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I've evolved (lol) the script. Now, how can I remove values from out1 and out2 if they exist in both (if a pokémon's types have matching weaknesses and resistancess, the matching ones cancel each other out, so should not be shown). -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 16:36, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I think I have it:
for every item in out1:
  for every item in out2:
    if both match, remove

Go backwards or read forwards and remove from an index, I dunno. I'll do the latter. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 17:48, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Generally, removing values from tables (sequential arrays) is more complicated. I can think of some ways how to proceed:
  1. Create a fresh empty array and populate it only with the chosen values from the original array. (There is some boring theory around this: w:Filter (higher-order function).)
  2. Use "index pattern" - create a table with values of the original array as keys and a constant as values. By coincidence, this is what TableTools.listToSet does. Then, the keys can be unset using set[key] = nil.
You can combine these approaches and use the "index array" for quickly determining if the value is present in the other array when looping over it. I can demonstrate all this if it helps you. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 18:16, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
I have a simpler method that works in my case: set the value to something like "remove". Then ignore it when creating the output. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 19:01, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Some Page Popups do not show anymore after upgrading to mediawiki-1.37.4

Hi there,

We use mediawiki to order our cooking recipes since 2019. I upgraded recently from mediawiki 1.35.1 to 1.37.4. Since then the Popups (using https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Popups – (2c2c6d3) 07:04, 26. Jul. 2022) of some pages are displayed. For many Pages I get a popup window which gives the error message "Es gab ein Problem bei der Anzeige dieser Vorschau", which basically says: "There was a problem displaying this preview".

@AKlapper (WMF) But here, each wiki has to be selected separately and marked. —MdsShakil (talk) 09:41, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
@MdsShakil I believe you can mark 25 at a time as read from the popout panel (screenshot), or 1 entire wiki at a time from Special:Notifications (using the "Cog" icon). There isn't any way to do more than that, unfortunately, as far as I know. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 16:43, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

css element (continued)

What is the name of the main tab? The one for "Page", "Book", "Policy", "Template" ect. The tab to the main err... Not the talk page, the other one. Also, what is the "view on meta" tab id? Thanks. L10nM4st3r (talk) 11:15, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r If you're looking for the system-names (like MediaWiki:nstab-user), you can use the mw:qqx trick (TLDR: put ?uselang=qqx at the end of the URL). If you're looking for the HTML ID's, you can use F12 to open the developer-toolbar to see them. Hope that helps. Quiddity (talk) 16:56, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
F12 huh. Where would I find that on a touch screen device? Also, the wikimedia foundation's most secret secret is out!
Jokes aside, I don't quite understand what you mean. I want it for making the tabs smaller at User:L10nM4st3r/global.css. L10nM4st3r (talk) 17:08, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
Ah, right, mobile, sorry. For CSS purposes, the tab IDs seem to be most clearly listed at mw:Manual:Remove_Tabs, plus #ca-view-foreign for "view on meta". Quiddity (talk) 18:44, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
The IDs are also present in the source code. If you’re on Android, you can for example download Termux and use curl https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tech | less—it’s quite inconvenient, and it’s probably an overkill to install Termux just for this purpose, but it lets you find out the IDs on your own. (Hint: the tabs are near the top of the source code on Vector 2022, but around the end on legacy Vector.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:25, 7 July 2022 (UTC)

It looks like you generally can’t do that with pure CSS—the diff’s <body> has an action-view class, just like non-diff page views. You can only style (including hiding/showing) things that are part of the diff view (the diff itself and the ruler and heading just below it), or you can use JavaScript to determine whether it’s a diff view (e.g. mw.util.getParamValue('diff') !== null) and then add a custom class accordingly, which you can then use to add styles with CSS. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:02, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Special pages as templates

Why does w:Special:PendingChanges work as a template, but not w:Special:UnreviewedPages? At least on Wikibooks. And is there a way around this? Thanks. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 08:32, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

@L10nM4st3r: Please provide sufficient context, plus references. What does "work as a template" mean exactly? Thanks, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 17:44, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
@AKlapper (WMF): See b:User:L10nM4st3r/ReviewTool. I want to see the unreviewed pages instead of a link to the special page when used as a template. -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 17:51, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Only a few Special pages can be transcluded. There are partial lists at mw:Transclusion#Special_pages and mw:Help:Special_pages#List_of_special_pages.
I would guess that "Special:UnreviewedPages" cannot be transcluded (at least partially, and perhaps other reasons) because even looking at the page is limited to editors with the "Reviewers" user-group (try opening it whilst logged-out). Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:18, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Why would viewing them as a non-reviewer cause harm? It wouldn't allow an IP to do anything, would it? -- L10nM4st3r / ROAR at me! 21:05, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
It’s probably less of a concern on English Wikibooks, but on wikis where reviewed versions of pages are shown by default, vandalism is not immediately visible, except if the page hasn’t been reviewed ever (since there’s no reviewed version to show instead of the vandalized one). So unreviewed pages are ideal targets for people looking for a page to vandalize, which is probably the reason why it’s not visible to anyone. (b:Special:PendingChanges, in contrast, is visible even for anons, since that’s not risky.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:30, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Email invitation to vote

Is it technically possible that when mass emails are sent inviting people to vote and participate in elections, users without the right to vote will be excluded and not receive such emails? In my personal experience, which happened several times, I found this annoying because the text of the email explicitly mentions the possibility of voting and this causes misunderstanding. IamMM (talk) 07:14, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

@IamMM: Hi, is this a technical question about using mw:Extension:MassMessage? Or a general question about the currently ongoing Board of Trustees elections? Or something else? If the current elections, does your second sentence imply that you somehow (how?) found out that you are not eligible to vote though you received an email which explicitly stated that you would be eligible to vote? Please provide more context. Thanks, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:23, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi AKlapper. Email text: "You are receiving this email because you are eligible to vote in the Wikimedia Foundation 2022 Board of Trustees election...Nearly 67,000 members of the communities are asked to vote. That includes you!"
During the elections and some other cases, such emails are sent to those eligible to vote, but after clicking on the SecurePoll link, it reminds me that I am not eligible to vote due to being blocked in two wikis. Because this is the third time that exactly the same thing has happened to me, I report it so that if possible, changes can be made in the way emails are sent only to users who are really eligible to vote. -- IamMM (talk) 10:30, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
@IamMM: Ah, thanks for clarifying. Please feel free to file a bug report at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/43/?projects=MediaWiki-extensions-SecurePoll (as this sounds different from e.g. phab:T288887). enwiki database dump intervals

I run a bot to update geodata tags on enwiki that works by parsing enwiki database dumps. At the moment, we have two dumps of enwiki per month; one is set off on the 1st of the month, and the other is set off on the 20th. This means that we have a dump interval of alternating periods of (roughly) 10 and 20 days, meaning that one bot run does roughly twice the work of the other, and the maximum lag between data change and bot action is about 20 days.

Would it be possible to set the second dump off on the 15th (or perhaps 16th) of each month instead of the 20th, so that the dump intervals are a bit more uniform? The Anome (talk) 21:17, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

I turned this question into a ticket at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T315263 Mutante (talk) 21:26, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hello again, let me forward the full response we got on the Phabricator ticket. I hope this is helpful, The Anome. Mutante (talk) 20:59, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

The first sql/xml dumps run (1st of every month) is a full run, this means it contains all historical data and takes longer to dump. Currently we still have the wikidata dumps ongoing, and expect it to complete tomorrow. This gives us a margin of a few days in case there are errors causing us to delay or rerun some parts.

The second run starts on the 20th and is a partial run (current revision only) which is why it finishes well before the end of the month, giving us again a few days in case we need to troubleshoot or rerun some parts.

While the specific wiki, enwiki, does complete well before the 15th, splitting up the wikis so that some are dumped on a 1st and 15th schedule and some are dumped on a 1st and 20th schedule would add more complexity than we want to manage.

I hope this helps to answer your questions, and we would be happy to respond if you need further information.

Thank you
Thank you. That all makes sense. The Anome (talk) 08:10, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Great. So they are asking if they can close that ticket on their side now. I'll say yes but you can always leave your own comments on the ticket as well. Your existing wiki user should also work as login there. Mutante (talk) 00:36, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Page counter problem in categories in KaWikt

Hello everyone. There is something wrong with the page counter in Georgian Wiktionary categories. Instead of showing the number of pages, it writes nonsense: "there is only this page in this category" (see Georgian screen). In addition, there is also a problem when going to the next page: some users report that the link to go to the next page does not work at all. However, as soon as I change the Georgian language to English in my personal configuration, everything is fine (see English screen). We have no idea what could be the reason. Please help us, thanks. Deu. 08:06, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

@Deu: Please provide links to where you took these screenshots, so that other users, who do not know the script, can verify and help. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:38, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
After some searching, this seems to be https://ka.wiktionary.org/wiki/კატეგორია:არსებითი_სახელი_(ქართული) (en). It is indeed doing something weird. However, other categories do show the proper number, e.g. [7] Platonides (talk) 21:37, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
category-article-count uses a plural on the number of articles. I suspect it is somehow parsing the value "1,987" as "1", and thus it's showing the text for when there is a single article. Not that I'm being able to reproduce it, though. Platonides (talk) 21:43, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
It seems you are almost right.
When I go to my wiki (cs.wikipedia) and switch the language to Georgian (ka) on a category page with 1000-1999 entries, I get the message for just one entry in the category, too. (tested using wikt:ka:Special:ExpandTemplates) prints correctly, but (which seems to correspond to the number format used in Georgian) does not, and it seems to parse just the "1". (In fact, there is a &nbsp; instead of a space, but the behavior is the same.)
I wonder though why the message works in Czech (which uses the same number format), but not in Georgian... --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:11, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

@Tulsi, Today 4 accounts were created but the bot only welcomed one user. Yesterday none. बडा काजी (talk) 13:34, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
@बडा काजी: Because some of those creation where outside newiki. The accounts solely created on newiki are only notified by the extension. Check this mw:Extension:NewUserMessage#Global variables, $wgNewUserMessageOnAutoCreate default value is set to false which means auto-created accounts are not notified. For an example, see Special:CentralAuth/Rajesh upreti under 'method' newiki is where the account originated so it was notified while check other for instance Special:CentralAuth/Myselfsujan is originated at enwiki and got auto-created on newiki so this account was not notified. I hope this clear your doubts. Kind regards, — Tulsi 24x7 15:45, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
@Tulsi, NewUserMessageOnAutoCreate should be enabled in Nepali because many Nepalis are likely to resister at enwiki for example see this. बडा काजी (talk) 14:32, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

As result openstreetmap projects cannot show link to Wikipedia articles. Who can copy 'site' content from 32 be-x-old to 31 be-tarask sections? be-x-old also should be as current, please not remove it. Michael L. Shapiro (talk) 20:49, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

@Michael L. Shapiro: Is this the same as phab:T111876? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:22, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
I am not sure if my question is about dbnames. Sorry, but I do not have a knowledge about how it works in nutshell, I only found this issue with json result when site node is empty for be-tarask. Michael L. Shapiro (talk) 08:48, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Pop-up notices on mobile versions of Wikipedia: Possible?

On the desktop version of the editing screen, admins can put a notice there (e.g., something to the effect that edits to a biography must cite reliable sources). I’ve found that these notices don’t appear when editing from a mobile device (both on the “m” mobile site and on the Android app). I’m wondering if there is a way to make these notices appear (i.e., we’ve been doing this wrong) or if it’s not possible to make them appear (i.e., this is a bug).

On my home Wikipedia we’ve been seeing a large number of edits that’s being described as LTA, but I’ve just discovered the way the edit screen is presented on mobile devices might have been the cause of these LTA’s and I’m wondering if there is a technical solution. Thanks!

(Disclaimer: I’m not an admin on my home wiki or any other wiki; just a regular user) Al12si (talk) 19:48, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

I assume that Al12si is talking about mw:Manual:Interface/Edit notice messages which can be set per-namespace and per-page by creating the appropriate MediaWiki: namespace page. An example here on metawiki would be MediaWiki:Editnotice-0-Tech-News which shows when attempting to edit Tech/News via the desktop web UI. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
On w:Wikipedia:Editnotice I found a link to phab:T278838 which includes a nice table of various methods of providing notices to user and which platforms they do/do not work with. To answer your original question @Al12si, there are open bug reports for the lack of edit notice support in mobile frontend and the iOS native app. The Android native app added support for edit notices in its 2.7.50386-alpha-2021-11-18 version. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:11, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the additional information. I wonder what’s holding back the alpha Android app; it’s been almost a year since the ticket was marked resolved but I only installed the Android app yesterday and there’s still no edit notices. Do you know how I can install the alpha app so that I can test it? Thanks! Al12si (talk) 23:38, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
@Al12si, I have asked for clarification on the Phabricator task. I will try to remember to relay updates here, but it might be easier for you to create a Phabricator account for yourself and subscribe to the task yourself. This would be especially useful if the response is that more information is needed to confirm or resolve the issue. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. I just created an account and subscribed myself.
The Phabricator interface is terrible: the Subscribe button is hard to find and there’s no feedback when I click it, so when I clicked it and saw nothing happening, I clicked it again and of course I unsubscribed myself. Al12si (talk) 22:41, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

my unified login doesn't work any more

Hello, I opened an user in wikibook before years. During the time my user become a global one. I could use an Unified login for all wiki-site. For some reason, which I'm not sure which, I can't use an Unified login. In other word, when I log into my user in He-wikibook and want to write in the he-wikipedia, I need to log again with the same password and user.I don't use alot in my wiki user, therefor I apologizing if I'm not answer. Also because I don't have an unified login - I'm not sure if I would see a note while I would use my user in other wiki-site.Thanks, Illuyanka (talk) 12:09, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

@Illuyanka: Do you happen to use Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection, or some other privacy software? They may block the cookies needed for unified login to work across domains. (This doesn’t mean that you’ve lost your unified login or that it wouldn’t work at all – auto-login should work across wikis in the same second-level domain in Firefox, e.g. Hebrew Wikibooks and English Wikibooks (*.wikibooks.org) or Meta and Commons (*.wikimedia.org).) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:21, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Meta-wiki translation tool hijacking keys

As the translation tool on meta binds alt for its own purposes, editing on macOS, which uses the same key for entering special characters, is a major pain. A solution would be greatly appreciated. Madeline (part of me) 13:20, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

Special:Statistics Hebrew wikibook

Hello, Seems there is a problem with Special:Statistics in the Hebrew wikibook. The count stop to working. Prehaps there is a need to udate the media wiki for this special site. Best, יולי2022 (talk) 09:49, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

In addition, the lock of Recent changes is wrong for Israel clock. The hour here right now is 2pm and 10 min (14:11). I will look also under my Preferences because I see that also when I signature the time is wrong. יולי2022 (talk) 11:12, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
I fix the time clock. Can be removed from the list help. Special:Statistics stil not sure יולי2022 (talk) 11:19, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
So it is this page, right: b:he:Special:Statistics? Which field (count) stopped working? What's the evidence? --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:14, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
Matěj Suchánek, Not sure. I'm not a programmer. For long time MediaWiki didn't update on the web. Because of luck of programmers mangers I think part of the data is stuck. Best, --יולי2022 (talk) 05:24, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
You don't have to be a programmer to tell what makes you think the stats stopped working.
Also it isn't true that For long time MediaWiki didn't update on the web. It's updated every week, most recently yesterday with the newest version.
You may ask the system administrators in Phabricator to run a script that will refresh the stats, but that won't fix them if they are stuck (or maybe it will).
If they are indeed stuck, you may report it as a bug. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 08:01, 27 October 2022 (UTC)
talk, Many thanks. There are luck of Phabricator in Hebrew book project. This reason made me to write at this wall. The problem seems to be fix. Many thanks and good day :)יולי2022 (talk) 22:11, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Hiding the main page title in the mobile view

Hello,

Have been trying to update the Mongolian Wikipedia with a few tweaks. Am currently trying to hide the main page title in the mobile view of the site (mn.m.wikipedia.org) to make it consistent with the desktop site - and have tried adding the following CSS selectors in the MediaWiki:mobile.css:

body.page-Нүүр_хуудас .pre-content {
    display: none;
}

However, this causes a flicker on the title (it shows up very briefly and then hides itself.

Was wondering how this can be achieved cleanly and where I can head to to read more documentation? chinneeb-talk 22:53, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

You cannot do this cleanly. Ruslik (talk) 19:58, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
Both English and German Wikipedia seem to do this cleanly with no flicker. —andrybak (talk) 08:28, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
There might be some hints in Small wiki toolkits/Starter kit/Main page customization#Hide/change the text of the Main Page heading, phab:T298715 and phab:T296969. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 08:57, 7 November 2022 (UTC)

Custom Index/Main Page ?

Trying to create a custom skin/html page for the index/main page - I've created custom namespaces and custom skins - and I can get it to work with new pages, but I seem to have trouble getting the Index/Main Page to use a SkinPerNamespace

Is this possible? ie - Main Index page different skin then rest of site. 45.37.52.14 07:23, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

I do hope this is not easily possible for Wikimedia wikis because pages should have a consistent look. If your question is not about a Wikimedia website, then please see the header of this page. If your question is about a Wikimedia website, then please explain the underlying problem you want to solve by your proposed solution, and which exact website this is about (full link). Adding a font

Hi all! Is it possible to expand the list of fonts for Wikipedia? I just made a SVG map with linear letter B and it is not displayed correctly (it is not displayed at all in the viewer - there are only squares). I myself installed this font on my PC [8] and used it to make a map. In general, is it possible to add a new font to Wikipedia at all? Can this font be used?Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 13:55, 23 November 2022 (UTC)

@Пётр Тарасьев: We basically require OSI licensed fonts which are available as Debian packages by Debian. Or you may convert letters to vector paths in your SVG file (which makes easily editing characters harder). --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 09:36, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer)))) Пётр Тарасьев (talk) 14:01, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

Namespace naming changes

We're discussing changes related to renaming some namespaces and system messages for the Mongolian Wikipedia as part of a drive to improve consistency in translations/content. In the event of a change in namespace, I presume all links to the old ones (such as category, talk pages etc.) would fail? How can we best manage this - we have the option to run a bot to automate and replace everything - but could we request, say, some custom namespace aliases? chinneeb-talk 13:14, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

@Chinneeb: Namespace aliases are possible per wikitech:Wikimedia site requests#Change a namespace. For requesting changes itself, see m:Requesting wiki configuration changes. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:44, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

CfA Wikipedia In Residence Page

Hi, kindly assist me with the Home page & Community Process page for Code for Africa wiki-meta page. The Community Process page is a repetition of the Home page, keep the community page but it should be empty and let information on Home page be maintained. Also when this has been fixed kindly show me how it is done or if there is a documentation available let me have it. Thanks Jwale2 (talk) 17:35, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

@Jwale2: Hi, could you elaborate please what exactly to assist with or "fix"? What happens currently, and what do you expect to happen instead? If you refer to the navigation header, you can edit its links on Template:Wikipedia In Residence Community, however I'm not sure why you'd want to link empty pages, or have duplicated pages? But maybe I misunderstand... Thanks, --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @AKlapper (WMF), what I meant was that when you click on the Community Process page you will be redirected to the home page, it provides you the same information as the home page. when you check the edit page for both, they provide , instead of and . if there could be something done to make the changes that will be great. Jwale2 (talk) 03:41, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
@Jwale2: You could rename the Home page to Community Process page. Problem solved and way less confusion ("Why does the Community Process page bring me to the home page? This is broken!") for anyone coming to those pages. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 07:54, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @AKlapper (WMF), please it seems my question has still not been solved and I don't really know how I can put it across again.Jwale2 (talk) 22:27, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
@Jwale2: I'd just remove the "Home" item. I did that now in https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3AWikipedia_In_Residence_Community&type=revision&diff=24185994&oldid=24181741 . You can always make edits and use the preview to see what those edits would change. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 22:33, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

New Wiki user/admin advice

I'm a new admin for a wiki I've created to host an evolving ethical will where I will be, at least for now, the only author. I'm trying to learn how to set this up and the admin manual assumes I know more than I do. Is there an "Idiot's Guide" to running a mediawiki website? Maxyaffe (talk) 19:10, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

MediaWiki REST API vs. MediaWiki Action API vs. WikiMedia API. Is there a standard one to use?

My goal is to retrieve specific revisions of wikipedia pages. I've read through the following 3 API documentation, and they are all capable of doing what I need. Is there one that is considered standard, or is the most actively developed?

1. MediaWiki REST API

2. MediaWiki Action API

3. WikiMedia API Edgedsurf (talk) 18:34, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

@Edgedsurf: The Action API is the most mature and offers the most flexibility in what kinds of data to get and filter. If you want to get wikitext of specific revisions, it's a good choice. The MediaWiki REST API is still pretty new, it is aiming to replace the Wikimedia REST API, which is good for concurrent access if you want annotated HTML output.
I hope this clarifies things a bit and is able to point you in the right direction. Legoktm (talk) 19:15, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
