Meta:Requests for adminship

(Redirected from Meta:RFA)
Requests and proposals Requests for adminship on Meta Archives

This page hosts requests for administrator access on the Meta-Wiki; for requesting administrator access on any other wiki, please find the appropriate venue on the index of request and proposal pages. Bureaucrat, checkuser, oversight and bot requests are also made here. Before making a request here, please see the administrator policy.

Most requests should be listed here for at least seven days; bureaucrats should only close after the minimum time foreseen in the relevant policy. Discussions are not closed early. Adminship will be granted by a support ratio of at least 75%. If a request hasn't been addressed by a bureaucrat after a lengthy period of time, please leave a note at Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. Requests may be extended, or put on hold by bureaucrats, pending decision or finding of consensus.

Requests for temporary adminship and bot requests may be less formal and often go for a shorter duration if consensus becomes clear after only a few days of discussion.

All editors with an account on Meta, at least one active account on any Wikimedia project, and a link between the two, may participate in any request and give their opinion of the candidate. However, more active Meta editors' opinions may be given additional weight in controversial cases.

See below for information on prerequisites on submitting a request, and how to add a nomination.

Wikimedia Meta-Wiki

Note that this page is for access on Meta only. See the permission request to stewards page for adminship/deadminship requests on other projects.

Regular adminship

  1. Before requesting admin access, please check the policy for requesting adminship.
  2. Use the box below, insert your username:

  1. Place a request on this page, by transcluding the subpage, for example {{Meta:Requests for adminship/Username}}. Please put the newest request on the top. Bear in mind that even if you do meet the criteria above this does not mean that the community will automatically approve a request.
  2. Please note, past administrators who have given up their rights must meet all criteria at the time of the new request. There is no separate process for reinstating past administrators.

Please note: Ill-considered nominations for adminship can be draining and deflating to both the community and the candidate. Any successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate sufficient experience within the Wikimedia community, in addition to a familiarity with Meta-Wiki. If a candidate is not already a local administrator or holder of advanced permissions on a Wikimedia content project, he or she is less likely to pass a request for adminship here at Meta-Wiki.

Add your request below under the bureaucratship section. Please note:

  • Only active administrators can become bureaucrats, and only after at least 6 months of regular adminship.
  • User is endorsed by two current bureaucrats after he/she nominates themselves here.

If you fail any of these requirements, you will not be assigned the bureaucrat flag. For more information see Meta bureaucrat page.

Other access

For these types of access, create a subpage just as you would for regular adminship and add it to the appropriate section of this page.

  • Limited adminship: If you need sysop access for a particular reason (such as ability to edit protected pages), you may request limited adminship on Meta. If granted, the user understands that they will only be allowed to use the tools for the tasks they were approved, and not doing so will be grounds for immediate removal. Temporary sysop access will normally be valid for one month unless requested and granted otherwise.

  • CheckUser: please read the CheckUser policy and add your request below under the checkuser section, in the same way as an admin request.

  • Oversight: please read the Oversight policy and add your request below under the oversight section, in the same way as an admin request.

For these types of access, just ask on Meta request for help from a sysop or bureaucrat page:

  • MassMessage sender: please read about MassMessage, and provide a clear reason for requesting access. Specify a duration, or specifically request ongoing if needed.
  • Uploaders
  • Patrollers

Requests for global renamer permissions are handled at global permission requests to stewards page.

WMF Office Staff and Contractors

  • If you are an WMF Official or Contractor and need rights on Meta-Wiki to perform your duties the process is different. Please have a look at the WMF staff userrights policy on Office wiki[restricted access] and follow the procedure described there. If in doubt, please contact Trust and Safety; or send an email to ca wikimedia org.(source)

Requests for translation adminship

Eva Martin (WMDE)

As a Wikimedia Deutschland staff member I frequently create and edit project pages on meta (e.g Wikimedia Europe, WIKIMOVE). To ensure equity and transparency, I would like to be able to mark these pages for translation. --Eva Martin (WMDE) (talk) 13:51, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Hello there! I'm the one who encouraged Eva to do this request, and I'm onboarding her with the subtleties of the translation extension. I will make sure that she reads the documentation and we will work together on the new pages she creates with translation.

@Pols12: Can you tell us more about the issues you noticed, so we know where to focus our attention?

@Pppery: I'm curious to know why you think that this request was not needed - is there a better way to allow someone to autonomously prepare and mark documentation pages for translation, without having the admin rights? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 08:57, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm not saying this request specifically was not needed. I'm saying that, generically, self-directed translation admin requests are not what's needed because they merely paper over the problem of having too few community-directed translation admins. That is, I want Meta to be like where Shirayuki handles nearly all pages needing translation marking and everyone can just let him do so rather than needing to request translation admin rights for themselves. But Meta is clearly not in that state right now, so I supported this request. * Pppery * it has begun 14:56, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I would like Eva to prepare a page for translation, complying with our recommendations. These edits, as an example, mess the translate markup up. --Pols12 (talk) 12:47, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi. I'm a sysop and bureaucrat in Azerbaijani Wikipedia and also a Board member of Azerbaijani Wikimedians User Group. I constantly have to translate both the administrative pages in Meta-Wiki and various other pages. I'm also an active translator and editor of Meta-Wiki content in different languages and actively follow updated translations. I'm familiar with mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration page. Thanks in advance! --eldarado (talk | contributions | meta page) 10:25, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

  •   Support Trusted user. AlPaD (talk) 12:13, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
  • Please prepare a page for translation and link it here, in order we can review whether you well know how to do it. --Pols12 (talk) 23:34, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes @AlPaD: you can review this page. --eldarado (talk | contributions | meta page) 11:35, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
@Eldarado Did you meant to ping @Pols12? Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 06:51, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
@Eldarado, they are several issues in your markup, can you fix them, please? I advise you to read our internationalization guidelines before.
  • I think it is safe to exclude attention-bringing syntax (''') from translation unit (this is not safe for idiomatic-text ('') for Korean language, but I’m not sure for attention-bringing).
  • You should not manually add unit markers (<!--T:2-->), they are automatically handled.
  • You should not close a translate tag before opening a new one: an empty new line allow to automatically segment the units.
  • You should add an empty new line after each heading to ensure they will be alone as translation units.
  • You should prefix link targets with “Special:MyLanguage/” and wrap the target in a tvar.
  • You should avoid to include HTML tags inside translation units. If this is needed, you should try to ensure they are balanced (including the closing tag if the opening tag is included and vice versa).
  • You should split tables to get one unit per cell.
  • You should wrap icon images and usernames inside tvars.
  Oppose for now. -- Pols12 (talk) 09:28, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes @Camouflaged Mirage: I tagged wrong, thanks. @Pols12: thank you for your help. I already updated it. --eldarado (talk | contributions | meta page) 07:08, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the improvements, however their still are some issues:
  • It is useless to close a translate tag before opening a new one for distinct paragraphs.
  • The comma , and and word are not universal, they should be localizable (you may eventually use {{list}} template). People real names may be transliterated. If your page is likely translatable in Arabic (or other target language with non-latin script), you should allow translator to localize them.
  • Names of tvar as link target are usually digits (quick to copy in most language), they don’t need to be informative since the display text is the descriptive part of the link.
  • Tvar names must be unique inside their own unit, but each unit can reuse the same tvar names (so the name “1” is the most common).
-- Pols12 (talk) 10:21, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Support Trusted user. I think there is a need for an translation admin who knows the Azerbaijani language. It is better if he asks and learns about the issues he does not know. Regards,--Turkmen talk 10:58, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose per Pols12. Also, this is yet another self-directed translation admin request and the languages a translation admin speaks are irrelevant since the role is a technical one rather than a linguistic one. * Pppery * it has begun 19:03, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
(Though knowing multiple languages is certainly beneficial for translation administration, since that will usually make it natural to use appropriately flexible translation markup.) ~~~~

  •   Support Altough I do not see a real need for this user right in this case, we really do need more translation admins. I think Eldarado has noticed their mistakes. --Ameisenigel (talk) 15:48, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose per Pols12. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs) 06:03, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
I was able to get back here a bit late for the Wikimania festival. Thank you all for your approach. I think there is no more dark moment for me. I spend a certain amount of time on the wiki during the day and am ready to contribute as a translator admin. --eldarado (talk | contributions | meta page) 13:47, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi! I'm Eric. As a volunteer for the Polish Wikimedia community, I focused my efforts on helping with projects such as Wikinews, and translating a huge number of meta articles into our native language. I know more than 3 languages, and I have also supported the management of translation projects of many tools that we using every day. For example, the Discordapp was supported by my gigantic contribution (I was awarded by Devs). I believe that I could also support Wikimedia in the internationalization process with my knowledge and skills.

I'm always active on our local Wikimedia PL Discord Server if someone needs help or have any question regarding Wiki. --Ombre988 (talk) 01:05, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

@Ombre988:, it's nice that you're willing to translate the Wikimedia-related stuff but I have a question: how are you going to benefit from the translation admin rights? Msz2001 (talk) 08:52, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

When working with our local files for a short time, you may notice accepted incorrect translations with some minor or major errors. Due to the fact that I am actively reviewing it, I could automatically mark the versions as reviewed which will move the projects forward. Ombre988 (talk) 18:55, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
@Ombre988: However, per the Translate extension documentation, it's impossible to self-review any translations. For example this page has been translated by translation admins only and none of the messages is marked as 'revieved'. On the other hand, the review right ((translate-messagereview)) is granted to all users and t-admin is not necessary in order to review others' translations. Msz2001 (talk) 09:27, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Please prepare a page for translation, complying with internationalization guidelines, so we ensure you well know Translate markup syntax. --Pols12 (talk) 11:24, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Do you mean any specific page or can I choose something from "Translation Request"? I think that all guidelines and documentation files were read be me properly. :) Ombre988 (talk) 19:00, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Any page you think it should be translatable. Bad markup costs time for translators and other translation admin; so I think it is better to train before to act. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 00:51, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose thanks for offering your help, but I would like to see more experience (first edit on Meta was four days ago, just a couple of hours later you requested translation adminship). --Johannnes89 (talk) 07:12, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I understand. I'll continue my contribution and will back with the request in near future. Regards, Ombre988 (talk) 16:45, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose Your first edit was only five days ago (August 10). Please come back one you've gained more experience with translations though. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs) 06:01, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose Has not prepared a page for translation as requested by Pols12 --Ameisenigel (talk) 11:40, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I would like to request to be a Translation Administrator. I just selected to be Programming Committee at ESEAP Conference 2022. I will also update both ESEAP Hub and ESEAP Conference 2022: Reconnect pages. If my request is rejected, please give me a suggestion for who I need to ask to mark my update as translations. Thanks :) --GhoziSeptiandri (talk) 13:04, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

  •   Oppose 53 edits on meta, only one translation – nope. Please come back once you've gained more experience. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs) 06:04, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
  •   Oppose missing experience --Ameisenigel (talk) 09:40, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
