Central Notices in cleanup group edit

Hello Seddon (WMF). Would you take a look at the recent notices that are ending up in Category:Pages_using_invalid_self-closed_HTML_tags? I think these are coming from the void input elements containing a closing "/" when they need not. Are these being machine generated? — xaosflux Talk 00:55, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Xaosflux: - <input/> is a valid self closing HTML5 tag so that shouldn't be causing the issue. Additionally at least several of those pages don't actually contain any self closing tags. So to be frank... I'm not entirely sure that category is accurately being populated but I haven't come across it before. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 01:07, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, think I found some of the problem, other invalid tags such as <p/>. — xaosflux Talk 01:13, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
I Haven't gone though them all some may be coming from included pages as well. — xaosflux Talk 01:16, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
(e.g. a self-closing div element in MediaWiki:WMDE FR2015/Resources/wlightbox.js). — xaosflux Talk 01:16, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Xaosflux: - I will flag it up with Wikimedia Deutschland and see if they can update some of the banner code to ensure it's compliant. :) Seddon (WMF) (talk) 01:19, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, there are not too many, I was going to apply for notice-admin just to clean these up, but won't bother for now. Have a nice day. — xaosflux Talk 01:20, 14 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Use of sexist language on the banner of the French wiki appealing for gifts edit

Hi Joseph, Active on the French wiki, I have received a message of complaint by a reknowned academic linguist in France (copy to the diretor of the equla opportunity office of the UNiversity of Geneva). She is the author of many acclaimed books on the theme of the feminization of title and functions in the French language. Her name is Eliane Viennot, and after giving a conference (pro bono) at the Paris Wikiconvention on non sexist language in French, she noticed that the banner appealing to fund the wikipedia project is declined only in masculine terms. So she will mention this in her classroom (she is a university professor) and she dicided not to donate, as women are not explicitly mentionned in the phrasing. I was told we should adress this kind of questions to you. Probably the message, starting with "Chers lecteurs" (masculine form) would be much better if it started using a neutral form: Cher lectorat A toutes les personnes qui lisent et utilisent Wikipedia Cher public This would not cause an uprow within the people wanting to use the masculine form as a generic form (which it is not) as these wordings are considering "people" as a whole, and not as gendered entities.

If the term "chers lecteurs" is retained, then the least would be to design the women readers with " Chères lectrices".

I hope we will be able to tackle this issue, as it is somenthing crucial in terms of gender bias.

Kind regards,

--Nattes à chat (talk) 06:41, 16 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Nattes à chat:. Thank you for relaying this feedback to us. Apologies I didn't reply to your initial message. I didn't have notifications or email notification turned on for en-wiki. You are right that we need to make sure that our banners are as inclusive as possible. Masculine and feminine forms of salutations is an issue in a number of languages and we have been looking at trying to improve in this so your suggestions are much appreciated. I'm just speaking with my team about this issue and I will hopefully have a response soon. Is this the academic you mention?: http://www.elianeviennot.fr/ Seddon (WMF) (talk) 22:03, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dear @Seddon (WMF):, thank you for your answer! Yes indeed, it is the academic I mentioned. --Nattes à chat (talk) 19:58, 2 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

CentralNotice/Request#Czech_Wikiconference_2016 edit

Hello Seddon, I'm asking you because you have previously commented on the central notice request linked in the title. Its scheduled start date was 17 November, the conference it promotes takes place on 3 December. Is there something else that needs to be done before it can go live? Can you please help to get it running? I am sorry if this direct request sounds inappropriate, but I don't know how else can I help to push it forward. Thank you, --Blahma (talk) 15:18, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, Joseph, for giving us a hand on this! Your help is much appreciated. (I hope I am correct in recognizing that it was indeed you who eventually set up the campaign, because I spent a few days in vain trying to get someone's attention for it before your intervention came.) Regards, --Blahma (talk) 13:29, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

CzechWikiCon edit

Hi. I've been approached on IRC by Martin Urbanec because the banner has no closing button and it shows permanently. I've tried to add it by adding at the bottom of the code the following:

<div id="cn-toggle-box">
<a href="#" title="Zavřít" onclick="hideBanner();return false;"><img border="0" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/foundation/2/20/CloseWindow19x19.png" alt="Zavřít" /></a>
</div>

However it's not correctly possitioned. Can you please add it?

Also, I've fixed (diff) an unclosed DIV tag.

Regards, —MarcoAurelio 12:19, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@MarcoAurelio: . So the key here is to add the following css:

#{{{banner}}} div#cn-toggle-box {
position: absolute;
top: 0px;
right: 270px;
}

Hope that's useful. I've made the necessary changes. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 12:44, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the button! --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:19, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

stewnoms banner edit

Hi!
I noticed your edit to the stewnoms banner[2] and wondered if you perhaps know a solution how to display this banner to all eligible users. It used to be displayed to all users which caused too many ineligible users to apply, then as a reaction to that the banner has been restricted to local administrators. The issue is, though, that all people who have held adminship on any project for a 3+ months period is eligible, meaning not all current admins are eligible but also not all former admins are ineligible. An eligibility checker for this year is available at [3].

Wikimania2017 Registration June banner edit

Hey Seddon, I disabled the Wikimania2017_Registration_June banner on iPhone and Android phones since it isn't mobile-friendly and was causing complaints. Feel free to fix and re-enable (or inform whoever should be informed). Kaldari (talk) 19:04, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I also notice that it's missing from CentralNotice/Calendar, please fix. (And I think it should not be enabled for unregistered users.) --Nemo 13:17, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I see there are more cases of campaigns missing from the calendar: mailarchive:wikimedia-l/2017-August/088365.html. Using the calendar would have helped prevent a blatant mistake which goes counter everything we've learn in years of CentralNotice experience. I hope we can restore some order, the current wild west is concerning. --Nemo 19:47, 18 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

WikiConferenceRussia2017_en edit

Hello! Today you launched the Central Notice for WikiConferenceRussia2017_en. Let me emphasize that there is no consensus for placing this banner in English-speaking projects (Russian-speaking projects are OK). It would be good to know if the opinion of the community counts, or central notices are unilaterally decided by someone on Meta. In the case of a unilateral decision, how can it be appealed? Thank you, Alexander (talk) 16:29, 26 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Now I view English Wikivoyage from Germany and see the banner informing me about the wiki-conference in Russia. This is nothing but spam. Please, stop it immediately! --Alexander (talk) 19:29, 26 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hey Alexander. You should not see any banners whilst in Germany. The EN campaign is geolocated to Russia. I am unsure if you use a proxy or perhaps have recently travelled to Russia but I would recommend you clear your cookies on the device you see the banners. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 23:16, 26 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Joseph, thank you for your response. No, I am not using a proxy, so it looks more like a technical glitch. Nevertheless, I would ask you to focus on my first message and stop the banner, which is highly controversial. It is even opposed by the conference organizers who don't like its overlap with Wiki Loves Monuments (running till October 1), don't like advertising the event now before its program is published, and may not be able to accommodate all the participants due to the limited size of the conference room. --Alexander (talk) 06:25, 27 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hey Alexander, Apologies for any delay in responding. As I mentioned to Farhad I'm on leave so responses are a little slower and connection is intermittent. I've disabled the campaigns. There may be some (1 in 1000) sneaking through due to caching problems but this will be a minor issue and should clear up over the next 12 hours. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 10:09, 27 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Joseph! I would also ask you to cross-check the opinion of the community and conference organizers before re-activating the banner. --Alexander (talk) 10:15, 27 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

CentralNotice/Request/2017 Wiki Conference Russia edit

Dear Seddon, this is to request activation of three CentralNotice/Request/2017 Wiki Conference Russia related banners via Special:CentralNotice & a non-controversial minor tweak in case of WikiConferenceRussia2017_ru to set for all countries, except Ukraine (per discussion) or otherwise, as appropriate. --Frhdkazan (talk) 15:57, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry, Frhdkazan, do we have consensus for English-speaking projects? --Alexander (talk) 16:45, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Dear Alexander, as no one responded to enWP RfC about having Russia-originating readers see the banner, I assume we do not have objections from enWP community. I've excluded all other wikis in my request. --Frhdkazan (talk) 17:56, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Nemo_bis expressed some concerns too, and the current setup of the Central Notice (for 'WikiConferenceRussia2017_en') includes all English-speaking projects. Moreover, your request does not say anything about three banner campaigns mentioned here. So there is quite a lot of confusion around it. --Alexander (talk) 18:25, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Dear Alexander, If I understood Federico's comments correctly, his proposal is for all users from Russia (to ruwiki, enwiki, ttwiki & all other spaces) to see the banner text in Russian only (without permission to localize into the local language), which is at least against Wikimedia principles. I requested him to provide explanation & context to support his logic, which otherwise reminds of linguistic imperialism, but haven't seen comments since. --Frhdkazan (talk) 05:55, 8 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

2017 Fundraising Campaign in Brazil edit

Hello. I would like to share two or three things about the last Fundraising Campaign - August 2017 at the Portuguese Wikipédia, targeting the Brazilian IPs:

  • As far as I know, we at the project were not informed about what was going on. I only noticed something strange was happening by the sudden increase in vandalism targeting the project and the Foundation, and the help requests that started appearing at our HelpDesk about bills, receipts and some fundraising campaign nobody apparently was aware of; consequently, those help requests went unanswered, and I doubt anyone there would know how to answer them, even if we knew about the campaign. I don't know how to answer such things, for sure;
  • Levels of IP vandalism, which were already skyrocketing at the Portuguese Wikipédia, significantly increased during the time of the campaign, with lots of IPs complaining about it writing protests in the articles; the vandalism was specifically against that campaign, complaining, for instance, about a rich organization (WMF) which has the impudence of begging money to poor people facing a severe recession, as are Brazilians right now;
  • Some people misunderstood the campaign, apparently believing they had to pay to get access to the project; others found it so weird, they asked if it was some kind of scam using the WMF name; See here, for instance - "When I access your site I'm receiving a message charging/asking for donations for Wikipedia maintenance. Can you confirm the message really came from you??";
  • In the whole, my impression is that the campaign, as it is, is a RP disaster for Wikimedia/Wikipedia in Brazil, where it already seem to have a very bad reputation, looking at the large amount of vandalism we receive everyday specifically complaining/warning about what they call the bad quality of the project; I and others were also taken by surprise with the increase of IP angerness and rage against the project, not being aware of the campaign going on;
  • I urge you to reflect on all that, and reformulate the present model of the campaign, or even the necessity to beg money in a country facing severe difficulties; I also ask you to please, advice us at VP next time such thing gets going on, so that we can be prepared for the IP reaction against what they clearly perceive as an harassment.

Thanks, --- Darwin Ahoy! 18:05, 19 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Merchandising and WSC edit

Hi. You are also in charge of merchandising, aren't you? I have this idea, for the Wiki Science Competition, to give a wiki gadget to the best uploader. here is my logic, someone who uploads many (good) files is closer to a real wikimedian per number of edits, so I can thank him or her as real wikimedian, whose edits have a big importance because they are precious and of high quality and very specific to get. Just a little gift to add to the prizes so at least someone is more satisfied and keeps uploading good images. Does it have sense? Plus they are good photographers so they can send good pictures with their gift. We can give it specifically to big uploaders outside the national juries, so they have a dedicated "prize".Any feedback on that?--Alexmar983 (talk) 09:11, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Central notice for the Wikivoyage month edit

Hello Joseph! I would like to request your advice/help with the Central Notice campaign for the Wikivoyage edit-a-thon. My main question at this point is about the best timing for such a campaign. Two periods are possible, 16.01-15.02 and 1.02-28.02, with a slight preference for the latter. However, I see that the Central notice for steward elections is planned for February with high priority. We seek moderate priority for the Wikivoyage banner, but I am not sure whether the high-priority banner leaves space for anything else. Our goal will be 4-5 impressions per day. Will it be feasible in February along with the steward elections?

Thank you in advance! --Alexander (talk) 23:41, 5 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Atsirlin: this should be definitely feasible. So there is generally no issue with running two such campaigns in parallel with each other. 50% per campaign is more than sufficient. I'll provide some feedback. Seddon (talk) 23:48, 7 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
We are ready with the announcements and collecting feedback. Would be grateful for creating and enabling the banners. Thanks! --Alexander (talk) 08:11, 29 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Joseph! That's a friendly reminder that the banner campaign is scheduled to start tomorrow, February 1, so it's definitely time to create and enable it. Please, let me know if further input from our side is needed. --Alexander (talk) 20:34, 31 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Atsirlin: ill get this enabled ASAP tomorrow. Seddon (talk) 00:04, 1 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joseph. I noticed that the banner currently appears in the Hebrew Wikivoyage with the an incomplete text and with the logo of the English Wikivoyage instead of the birthday cake icon and the traveler icon we requested. If possible please make the following changes to the Hebrew banner as soon as possible:

  • 1. The text should be "עזרו לכתוב מדריכים למטיילים על היעדים שהכי מעניינים אתכם במסגרת מרתון עריכה מיוחד שהושק לקראת ציון יום השנה החמישי להשקה של הוויקימסע העברי"
(basically, currently the only mistake is that the last word in this sentence appears as "העבר" instead of "העברי".)
  • 2. On the Hebrew banner please make sure that this image is used instead of the logo of the English Wikivoyage.
(This icon would probably be a lot more effective in getting the attention of the right type of writers/editors we are hoping this edit-a-thon would attract)
ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 01:41, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Another question... I noticed that the banners are currently only displayed on Wikivoyage. When are they going to start appearing in Wikipedia? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 03:35, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I would like to second this question. The central notice request was for Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, and Commons. --Alexander (talk) 05:47, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Please note, that I am updated of projects reach for this campagne (by request from Atsirlin). --Kaganer (talk) 12:01, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Atsirlin & Kaganer - I was running the campaign initially on Wikivoyage to flush out any issues such as the one above with the Hebrew translation. Which hadn't been corrected when you added commons and Wikipedia to the mix. In addition, the Wikipedia campaign was to be set at 20% traffic. For the time being I've removed Wikipedia from the initial campaign and creating a new one. And correcting the translation issue mentioned above before flipping that particular switch. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 12:18, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback. I'm not a very experienced CentralNotice administrator, and also the management procedure is now not very transparent. (I have not even translated the documentation and the interface into Russian, because initially I did not understand everything. But I'm trying ;)) --Kaganer (talk) 12:27, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I am don't seen problem for improving this banner (by image; as was intially proposed in the request). Can I just do this? --Kaganer (talk) 12:54, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Got it. I'm sorry for messing things up.
One small remark to the banner is that the text on the Russian one could use a 20-30% bigger font. --Alexander (talk) 13:52, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Atsirlin: I'll take a look to see if I can find a way of increasing font size on a per language basis but that isn't something usually done. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 17:56, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! But no worries, we can also live with the current font size. --Alexander (talk) 17:58, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Atsirlin: The alternative is that we simply increase the length of the banner text in russian. This won't changes it's effectiveness. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 18:01, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, well, we tried to be concise, but that may not be the best solution here. Please, use the updated text. It's a bit longer. --Alexander (talk) 18:18, 2 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello Joseph! I have not heard any further complaints about the banner, and I think it can be enabled also for Wikipedia. It's already February 4 afternoon in our part of the world, 4 days past the start of the edit-a-thon. --Alexander (talk) 10:26, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Atsirlin Done! If you have any issues in terms of excess vandalism on sites or you are getting too many new users. Let me know and we can dial down the campaign. If you think that everything is good we can look at dialing the campaign up to 25% or up to 50%. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 12:32, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Great! Thanks! Yes, we shall see how it goes. --Alexander (talk) 13:33, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Joseph. Unfortunately, although the banner definitly appears on all the pages of the Hebrew Wikivoyage, I haven't noticed the banner appearing on any of the Hebrew Wikipedia pages so far (I tested viewing random pages on the Hebrew Wikipedia with two different computers and my mobile phone - both while logged out and in of my user account). I also checked the page views of the Hebrew Wikivoyae edit-a-thon page and it doesn't seem to be significantly higher in a way that suggest there is a huge exposure to the banner (there was only a 100 more people on Friday and then the page views went back to normal). What do you think went wrong? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 17:18, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

The banner is definitely enabled on Hebrew Wikipedia, as can be seen here. Regarding English and Russian Wikivoyage, I already see some activity, but it's not too high. I suggest to wait for 1-2 days and increase the display frequency, unless we see that more people are coming. --Alexander (talk) 18:58, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Increase display frequency edit

Joseph, could you increase the display frequency to 40%? We see somewhat different influx of editors in different languages, and 40% seems to be a good compromise for the moment. Thank you! --Alexander (talk) 13:50, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Joseph, please look at the current trend of the page view statistics for all articles at Wikivoyage editions that are participating in the edit-a-thon (minus the English Wikivoyage and German Wikivoyage which are getting a lot more page views per day). While the edit-a-thon has clearly contributed to a significant spike in page views at the English Wikivoyae, German Wikivoyage, French Wikivoyage, Spanish Wikivoyage, Italian Wikivoyage, and Russian Wikivoyage... it clearly looks like the edit-a-thon hasn't been contributing to a significant increase in page views at the Hebrew Wikivoyage, Hindi Wikivoyage, Chinese Wikivoyage, Ukrainian Wikivoyage or the Portuguese Wikivoyage. Would it be possible to set a different percentage for those specific Wikivoyage editions in order let them also get an opportunity to have a significant exposure as part of this edit-a-thon? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 22:14, 7 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Help with some banner updating edit

Hello & happy new year. For the next Stewards/Elections 2018 we're setting as usual our call for nominations (Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/stewnoms) and call for votes Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/stewvote) banners. However I think they use old syntax which is not compatible with most mobile devices (which seem many people use these days). I wonder if an update to those banners keeping the translations (text1/text2) that we've used and that took us some years to complete could be done? Also, both banners need a bundled JavaScript so they're only displayed to users meeting the nominations and voting criteria. Do you think is it possible at all? What do you propose? Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 22:05, 9 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@MarcoAurelio: Yeah that should be possible. What's the timeline for this? Seddon (WMF) (talk) 16:32, 11 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Joseph. As for the 'stewnoms' banner: Candidate submissions are open from 15 January 2018, 00:00 (UTC) until 28 January 2018, 23:59 (UTC). For the 'stewvote' banner: The voting begins on 08 February 2018, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2018, 13:59 (UTC). Note that we'd like to keep the banner name and the previous banner translations so we can reuse them year after year. Thanks :) —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:18, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello there again. Given that the call for candidates start in few hours I've created the campaign and added the old banner to it meanwhile. Regards. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 12:53, 14 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising in Sweden edit

Hi! As a mentor and press contact at svwp I often get e-mail around alternative ways to donate to Wikipedia. There are a lot of Swedes that prefer to pay via sv:Swish, sv:plusgiro and sv:bankgiro. None of these are alternatives available at the link "Stöd Wikipedia" to the left of every svwp page. There would be wonderful for WMF to be able to add any or all of these as alternatives in the WMF donation campaigns. Here one of my fellow administrators deleted a version of our standard FAQ page with alternative payment methods. It included links to payment to WMFI and WMSE, where payment methods adapted to many Finnish and Swedish citizens were provided.

Swish is a new an ever more popular payment method here in Sweden, and plusgiro/bankgiro are since decades standard payment methods in Sweden for any kind of payment. Right now I'm at a loss about how to phrase my answer to the above enquiries. I do believe many common Wikipedia readers in Sweden would easily refrain to make an e-mail in English, when all they wanted to do was to pay a sum of money to Wikipedia (via Swish or pg/bg). Is complementary information on our FAQ page, such as this paragraph and its links acceptable to you, or do you want any and all payments to "Wikipedia" to be via credit cards (w/w-o through PayPal)?

@NH: Yes, please do, Seddon. Since my posting above I've sent and received two very general replies from my e-mail request to donate wikimedia.org. The answers came from Seilo Inaba and Alex Valkoff. In two instances I've CC:ed you to the e-mails, in an attempt to get a quicker reply. In my last e-mail request, I've enhanced the prioritization to Important. Hopefully someone will listen to me/us.--Paracel63 (talk) 15:20, 22 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
@NH and Paracel63: Hey both. Unfortunately offering swish to donors requires you to be an entity registered in Sweden and have a Swedish bank account which wouldn't be possible for the Wikimedia Foundation. In instances where donors inquire about these payment methods not offered by Wikimedia Foundation, it makes sense to point donors to Wikimedia Sweden. They are a very competent affiliate. It's a community decision if it's included or not on the FAQ so I don't want to preclude any such discussions but I would not be opposed to it's inclusion. If the community would want to see something more formal in terms of a memorandum of understanding between WMF and WMSE before it's inclusion on the FAQ, this is something I could explore. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 18:17, 22 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, then I think we can sort it all out. /NH 17:38, 23 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
 Like Many thanks for the helpful answer.  --Paracel63 (talk) 19:38, 23 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Feedback on fundraising campaign edit

In w:it:Wikipedia:Bar/Discussioni/Fundraising - Italy Launch there are two feedbacks on the Italian campaign.--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 23:28, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

About Italy, I'd suggest to use the last two messages ("Open to the public", "Different opening line"), not the first ones. We are currently under elections, we will keep on being in political tensions for a long while, and referring to "democratic" issues might be easily misunderstood. --g (talk) 12:08, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Grammar mistake in the Italian mobile banner edit

Someone told me there is a grammar mistake in the Italian mobile banner: «Se tutti coloro che stanno leggendo questo avviso donaste 2 €, potremmo permetterci di far crescere Wikipedia negli anni a venire.» isn't exact. The exact way is «Se tutti coloro che stanno leggendo questo avviso donassero 2 €, potremmo permetterci di far crescere Wikipedia anche nei prossimi anni.». Thanks in advance.--Ferdi2005 (Posta) 16:26, 2 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Please, we need a decision for this discussion. Thank you! --Dmitry Rozhkov (talk) 12:32, 17 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Very much support Dmitry, as we would like to communicate about WikiGap initiative & the article contest to wider body of Wikipedia readers from Russia.--Frhdkazan (talk) 08:05, 23 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the banner! Strangely enough, we don't seem to see it. And we see a lot more of PD Russia 2018 than expected, though only in en / ru (whilst ba-bxr-mhr-myv-sah-tt-udm texts are also available). Thanks again & where and how should I start experimenting to learn creating & adjusting CN campains/banners? Regards, --Frhdkazan (talk) 06:22, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

UX bug in EU Copyright Directive ItalianWP CentralNotice edit

Hi Seddon, there is a little UX bug in "EU Copyright Directive ItalianWP" CentralNotice. When you hover on a button both change their sytle, but only the one you go hover with the mouse pointer should change. Best regards, --Afnecors (talk) 13:53, 3 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Afnecors: Yeah I am aware of it. I'm working on a new version of the banner this evening that will correct this. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 15:44, 3 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks! --Afnecors (talk) 15:53, 3 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

EU copyright directive banner in Czech Republic edit

Hi Joseph. We've had a couple of complaints to OTRS that the EU copyright directive banner that appears on the English Wikipedia (but not the Czech Wikipedia) when accessed from the Czech Republic addresses readers as being from Czechia. This seems odd to me, as the English Wikipedia article about the country is called en:Czech Republic, and en:Talk:Czech Republic tells readers that there is currently a moratorium on any discussion of renaming the article. Would you be willing to change the wording to Czech Republic? Cordless Larry (talk) 21:23, 4 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Could we lease keep the banners up until the end of the actual vote? Imagine a MEP pulling out his smartphone to show the banner to another MEP right before they vote -- and it has disappeared.

EU Copyright at deWP edit

Hi Seddon, Please deactivate the current EU Copyright banner at deWP. Though it is claiming "we, the Wikiepdia authors" it did not receive proper community approval. As you can see at deWP's signpost equivalent"Kurier", the banner is a controversial case described in the [CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines|CentralNotice guidelines]]. Again, please deactivate and follow procedure. Thank you --Martina Nolte (talk) 21:29, 11 September 2018 (UTC) @Martina Nolte:. Thanks for your message. I am content that sufficient consensus was established by the German community with over 80% of respondent to the poll in favour of running blackout banners. Whilst I see there is some disappointment by some members of the community, at this moment I do see sufficient opposition to merit disabling the banner ahead of time. The german banner campaign is scheduled to end in approximately 30 minutes. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 22:03, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

This kind of "polls" does not establish community consensus. That would be a [de:WP:MB|Meinungsbild"]. The banner was violating local decision making processes. Thank you for disabling it. --Martina Nolte (talk) 22:15, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

CentralNotice JavaScript check edit

Good morning,

Could you please take a look at this campaign banners and see if the in-banner JS that we employ works, etc.? The banners should display only to administrators according to the election guidelines, "hold or have held administrator rights on at least one public Wikimedia Foundation project for a period of at least three months" is a requirement to submit a valid candidacy. If you could also check the proposed campaign settings, banner code, etc. we'd be very happy. Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 14:52, 9 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Blackout on Slovak Wikipedia (21 March 2019) edit

Hello! I am writting to you because I noticed you created English version of the banner for the blackout in regards to the proposal of the EU Copyright Directive. Our community on Slovak Wikipedia already prepared, discussed and approvedof our own blackout page which uses using background picture that clearly evokes it is about EU and details our criticism of the Directive. Furthermore, we included URL to our blackout page in press release of our Users Group which was already published by some media outlets (e.g. Denník N). However, we have learned that Meta is planning to use one global banner with translation of English text to Slovak. Our community have not approved the banner and some Slovak Wikipedians are concerned about wording of the text included in the banner.--Lišiak (talk) 21:55, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I just want to add: If I understood correctly, the current problem is that we've prepared our blackout message in wiki code and for blackout you use HTML and these languages. But what I've seen during the blackout on Italian Wikipedia in summer 2018 (screenshot attached) was that they had a normal wiki page showing instead of others and they just removed items from the menu and replaced the logo with the negative. Couldn't this be the way how to solve the problem? Maybe if we would just somehow get the code from Italians, we would manage until the blackout date. --Luky001 (talk) 22:17, 19 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Blackout on deWP edit

Hi Seddon,

in a discussion on the administrator's noticeboard on deWP the question was raised, if the banner would be displayed only to unregistered users or to all users. As I understand the community decision, the blackout should affect all users of the site. Could you clarify this point?

Thanks, Sense Amid Madness, Wit Amidst Folly (talk) 22:24, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Sense Amid Madness, Wit Amidst Folly: Hey! Yes someone just emailed me about this and it has been corrected :) Any other issues or changes, ping me. Available on irc too as Seddon in #wikipedia-de. Please pass that on to the community. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 22:25, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Remove blackout on Czech, Slovak and Danish Wikipedia edit

And finally, Slovak Wikipedia! --Agusbou2015 (talk) 00:14, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I forgot to tell you that Czech and Danish Wikipedias still contain banners about the pending directive and Estonian Wikipedia includes an illustration that reads "RIP Open Internet". --Agusbou2015 (talk) 00:24, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Agusbou2015: I cleared up cs.wiki and sk.wiki Common.css. I'll clear the site notices too and clear up et.wiki. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 00:29, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Remember that Estonian Wikipedia opted for a soft blackout, in which all articles were still visible but covered by a banner about the proposed directive and the forementioned tombstone illustration instead of the usual Wikipedia logo. --Agusbou2015 (talk) 23:01, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Blackout on Catalan projects edit

Hey Seddon. The editors of the Catalan projects have finally decided to shut them down for three days. I have started this CentralNotice request, using the German banner as a reference.
