Central Notices in cleanup group

Hello Seddon (WMF). Would you take a look at the recent notices that are ending up in Category:Pages_using_invalid_self-closed_HTML_tags? I think these are coming from the void input elements containing a closing "/" when they need not. Are these being machine generated? — xaosflux ^Talk 00:55, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

@Xaosflux: - <input/> is a valid self closing HTML5 tag so that shouldn't be causing the issue. Additionally at least several of those pages don't actually contain any self closing tags. So to be frank... I'm not entirely sure that category is accurately being populated but I haven't come across it before. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 01:07, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Use of sexist language on the banner of the French wiki appealing for gifts

Hi Joseph, Active on the French wiki, I have received a message of complaint by a reknowned academic linguist in France (copy to the diretor of the equla opportunity office of the UNiversity of Geneva). She is the author of many acclaimed books on the theme of the feminization of title and functions in the French language. Her name is Eliane Viennot, and after giving a conference (pro bono) at the Paris Wikiconvention on non sexist language in French, she noticed that the banner appealing to fund the wikipedia project is declined only in masculine terms. So she will mention this in her classroom (she is a university professor) and she dicided not to donate, as women are not explicitly mentionned in the phrasing. I was told we should adress this kind of questions to you. Probably the message, starting with "Chers lecteurs" (masculine form) would be much better if it started using a neutral form: Cher lectorat A toutes les personnes qui lisent et utilisent Wikipedia Cher public This would not cause an uprow within the people wanting to use the masculine form as a generic form (which it is not) as these wordings are considering "people" as a whole, and not as gendered entities.

If the term "chers lecteurs" is retained, then the least would be to design the women readers with " Chères lectrices".

I hope we will be able to tackle this issue, as it is somenthing crucial in terms of gender bias.

You are right that we need to make sure that our banners are as inclusive as possible. Masculine and feminine forms of salutations is an issue in a number of languages and we have been looking at trying to improve in this so your suggestions are much appreciated. stewnoms banner

Hi!
I noticed your edit to the stewnoms banner[2] and wondered if you perhaps know a solution how to display this banner to all eligible users. It used to be displayed to all users which caused too many ineligible users to apply, then as a reaction to that the banner has been restricted to local administrators. The issue is, though, that all people who have held adminship on any project for a 3+ months period is eligible, meaning not all current admins are eligible but also not all former admins are ineligible. An eligibility checker for this year is available at [3].

Using the calendar would have helped prevent a blatant mistake which goes counter everything we've learn in years of CentralNotice experience. Hello! Today you launched the Central Notice for WikiConferenceRussia2017_en. Let me emphasize that there is no consensus for placing this banner in English-speaking projects (Russian-speaking projects are OK). Hey Alexander. You should not see any banners whilst in Germany. The EN campaign is geolocated to Russia. I am unsure if you use a proxy or perhaps have recently travelled to Russia but I would recommend you clear your cookies on the device you see the banners. Joseph, thank you for your response. No, I am not using a proxy, so it looks more like a technical glitch. Nevertheless, I would ask you to focus on my first message and stop the banner, which is highly controversial. It is even opposed by the conference organizers who don't like its overlap with Wiki Loves Monuments (running till October 1), don't like advertising the event now before its program is published, and may not be able to accommodate all the participants due to the limited size of the conference room. --Alexander (talk) 06:25, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

Dear Alexander, If I understood Federico's comments correctly, his proposal is for all users from Russia (to ruwiki, enwiki, ttwiki & all other spaces) to see the banner text in Russian only (without permission to localize into the local language), which is at least against Wikimedia principles. 2017 Fundraising Campaign in Brazil

Hello. I would like to share two or three things about the last Fundraising Campaign - August 2017 at the Portuguese Wikipédia, targeting the Brazilian IPs:

• As far as I know, we at the project were not informed about what was going on. I only noticed something strange was happening by the sudden increase in vandalism targeting the project and the Foundation, and the help requests that started appearing at our HelpDesk about bills, receipts and some fundraising campaign nobody apparently was aware of; consequently, those help requests went unanswered, and I doubt anyone there would know how to answer them, even if we knew about the campaign. I don't know how to answer such things, for sure;
• Levels of IP vandalism, which were already skyrocketing at the Portuguese Wikipédia, significantly increased during the time of the campaign, with lots of IPs complaining about it writing protests in the articles; the vandalism was specifically against that campaign, complaining, for instance, about a rich organization (WMF) which has the impudence of begging money to poor people facing a severe recession, as are Brazilians right now;
• Some people misunderstood the campaign, apparently believing they had to pay to get access to the project; others found it so weird, they asked if it was some kind of scam using the WMF name; See here, for instance - "When I access your site I'm receiving a message charging/asking for donations for Wikipedia maintenance. Can you confirm the message really came from you??";
• In the whole, my impression is that the campaign, as it is, is a RP disaster for Wikimedia/Wikipedia in Brazil, where it already seem to have a very bad reputation, looking at the large amount of vandalism we receive everyday specifically complaining/warning about what they call the bad quality of the project; I and others were also taken by surprise with the increase of IP angerness and rage against the project, not being aware of the campaign going on;
• I urge you to reflect on all that, and reformulate the present model of the campaign, or even the necessity to beg money in a country facing severe difficulties; I also ask you to please, advice us at VP next time such thing gets going on, so that we can be prepared for the IP reaction against what they clearly perceive as an harassment.

Merchandising and WSC

Hi. You are also in charge of merchandising, aren't you? I have this idea, for the Wiki Science Competition, to give a wiki gadget to the best uploader. here is my logic, someone who uploads many (good) files is closer to a real wikimedian per number of edits, so I can thank him or her as real wikimedian, whose edits have a big importance because they are precious and of high quality and very specific to get. Just a little gift to add to the prizes so at least someone is more satisfied and keeps uploading good images. Does it have sense? Plus they are good photographers so they can send good pictures with their gift. We can give it specifically to big uploaders outside the national juries, so they have a dedicated "prize".Any feedback on that?--Alexmar983 (talk) 09:11, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Central notice for the Wikivoyage month

Hello Joseph! I would like to request your advice/help with the Central Notice campaign for the Wikivoyage edit-a-thon. My main question at this point is about the best timing for such a campaign. Two periods are possible, 16.01-15.02 and 1.02-28.02, with a slight preference for the latter. However, I see that the Central notice for steward elections is planned for February with high priority. We seek moderate priority for the Wikivoyage banner, but I am not sure whether the high-priority banner leaves space for anything else. Our goal will be 4-5 impressions per day. Will it be feasible in February along with the steward elections?

Hi Joseph. I noticed that the banner currently appears in the Hebrew Wikivoyage with the an incomplete text and with the logo of the English Wikivoyage instead of the birthday cake icon and the traveler icon we requested. If possible please make the following changes to the Hebrew banner as soon as possible:

• 1. The text should be "עזרו לכתוב מדריכים למטיילים על היעדים שהכי מעניינים אתכם במסגרת מרתון עריכה מיוחד שהושק לקראת ציון יום השנה החמישי להשקה של הוויקימסע העברי"

(basically, currently the only mistake is that the last word in this sentence appears as "העבר" instead of "העברי".)

• 2. On the Hebrew banner please make sure that this image is used instead of the logo of the English Wikivoyage.

(This icon would probably be a lot more effective in getting the attention of the right type of writers/editors we are hoping this edit-a-thon would attract)

Atsirlin & Kaganer - I was running the campaign initially on Wikivoyage to flush out any issues such as the one above with the Hebrew translation. Which hadn't been corrected when you added commons and Wikipedia to the mix. In addition, the Wikipedia campaign was to be set at 20% traffic. For the time being I've removed Wikipedia from the initial campaign and creating a new one. And correcting the translation issue mentioned above before flipping that particular switch. Hi Joseph. Unfortunately, although the banner definitly appears on all the pages of the Hebrew Wikivoyage, I haven't noticed the banner appearing on any of the Hebrew Wikipedia pages so far (I tested viewing random pages on the Hebrew Wikipedia with two different computers and my mobile phone - both while logged out and in of my user account). I also checked the page views of the Hebrew Wikivoyae edit-a-thon page and it doesn't seem to be significantly higher in a way that suggest there is a huge exposure to the banner (there was only a 100 more people on Friday and then the page views went back to normal). The banner is definitely enabled on Hebrew Wikipedia, as can be seen here. Regarding English and Russian Wikivoyage, I already see some activity, but it's not too high. Joseph, please look at the current trend of the page view statistics for all articles at Wikivoyage editions that are participating in the edit-a-thon (minus the English Wikivoyage and German Wikivoyage which are getting a lot more page views per day). While the edit-a-thon has clearly contributed to a significant spike in page views at the English Wikivoyae, German Wikivoyage, French Wikivoyage, Spanish Wikivoyage, Italian Wikivoyage, and Russian Wikivoyage... it clearly looks like the edit-a-thon hasn't been contributing to a significant increase in page views at the Hebrew Wikivoyage, Hindi Wikivoyage, Chinese Wikivoyage, Ukrainian Wikivoyage or the Portuguese Wikivoyage. Would it be possible to set a different percentage for those specific Wikivoyage editions in order let them also get an opportunity to have a significant exposure as part of this edit-a-thon? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 22:14, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Help with some banner updating

Hello & happy new year. For the next Stewards/Elections 2018 we're setting as usual our call for nominations (Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/stewnoms) and call for votes Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/stewvote) banners. However I think they use old syntax which is not compatible with most mobile devices (which seem many people use these days). I wonder if an update to those banners keeping the translations (text1/text2) that we've used and that took us some years to complete could be done? Also, both banners need a bundled JavaScript so they're only displayed to users meeting the nominations and voting criteria. Do you think is it possible at all? What do you propose? Fundraising in Sweden

Hi! As a mentor and press contact at svwp I often get e-mail around alternative ways to donate to Wikipedia. There are a lot of Swedes that prefer to pay via sv:Swish, sv:plusgiro and sv:bankgiro. None of these are alternatives available at the link "Stöd Wikipedia" to the left of every svwp page. There would be wonderful for WMF to be able to add any or all of these as alternatives in the WMF donation campaigns. Here one of my fellow administrators deleted a version of our standard FAQ page with alternative payment methods. It included links to payment to WMFI and WMSE, where payment methods adapted to many Finnish and Swedish citizens were provided.

Swish is a new an ever more popular payment method here in Sweden, and plusgiro/bankgiro are since decades standard payment methods in Sweden for any kind of payment. Right now I'm at a loss about how to phrase my answer to the above enquiries. I do believe many common Wikipedia readers in Sweden would easily refrain to make an e-mail in English, when all they wanted to do was to pay a sum of money to Wikipedia (via Swish or pg/bg). Is complementary information on our FAQ page, such as this paragraph and its links acceptable to you, or do you want any and all payments to "Wikipedia" to be via credit cards (w/w-o through PayPal)?

Unfortunately offering swish to donors requires you to be an entity registered in Sweden and have a Swedish bank account which wouldn't be possible for the Wikimedia Foundation. In instances where donors inquire about these payment methods not offered by Wikimedia Foundation, it makes sense to point donors to Wikimedia Sweden. They are a very competent affiliate. It's a community decision if it's included or not on the FAQ so I don't want to preclude any such discussions but I would not be opposed to it's inclusion. If the community would want to see something more formal in terms of a memorandum of understanding between WMF and WMSE before it's inclusion on the FAQ, this is something I could explore. EU copyright directive banner in Czech Republic

Hi Joseph. We've had a couple of complaints to OTRS that the EU copyright directive banner that appears on the English Wikipedia (but not the Czech Wikipedia) when accessed from the Czech Republic addresses readers as being from Czechia. This seems odd to me, as the English Wikipedia article about the country is called en:Czech Republic, and en:Talk:Czech Republic tells readers that there is currently a moratorium on any discussion of renaming the article. Hi Seddon, Please deactivate the current EU Copyright banner at deWP. Though it is claiming "we, the Wikiepdia authors" it did not receive proper community approval. Could you please take a look at this campaign banners and see if the in-banner JS that we employ works, etc.? The banners should display only to administrators according to the election guidelines, "hold or have held administrator rights on at least one public Wikimedia Foundation project for a period of at least three months" is a requirement to submit a valid candidacy. Blackout on Slovak Wikipedia (21 March 2019)

Hello! I am writting to you because I noticed you created English version of the banner for the blackout in regards to the proposal of the EU Copyright Directive. Our community on Slovak Wikipedia already prepared, discussed and approvedof our own blackout page which uses using background picture that clearly evokes it is about EU and details our criticism of the Directive. Furthermore, we included URL to our blackout page in press release of our Users Group which was already published by some media outlets (e.g. Denník N). However, we have learned that Meta is planning to use one global banner with translation of English text to Slovak. Our community have not approved the banner and some Slovak Wikipedians are concerned about wording of the text included in the banner.--Lišiak (talk) 21:55, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

I just want to add: If I understood correctly, the current problem is that we've prepared our blackout message in wiki code and for blackout you use HTML and these languages. But what I've seen during the blackout on Italian Wikipedia in summer 2018 (screenshot attached) was that they had a normal wiki page showing instead of others and they just removed items from the menu and replaced the logo with the negative. Couldn't this be the way how to solve the problem? Maybe if we would just somehow get the code from Italians, we would manage until the blackout date. --Luky001 (talk) 22:17, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

• Permanent large banner (In use in estonian & portuguese)
• Small banner that expands (In use in slovakian, czech)
• Full Blackout (In use in galician, asturian. Formally used for German, Slovakian, Czech, Estonian blackout)
• Slovakian Blackout (formally used for slovakian)
