  • As far as I see, this will cover many languages, some of them having pages in their own language (for example, Ukrainian, Bashkir or Finnish).     • NickK, thank you for the links. I added them at ==See also== sections of both English & Russian-language landing pages together with Wiki4Women by UNESCO & Wikimedia Foundation. I helped Dmitry with translating the landing page into English & also localized the announcement into my mothertongue (Tatar).       I am not quite interested in WMRU banner campaigns, I am just surprised that you are requesting a banner for Ukrainian or Finnish Wikipedia for an international event with a link to a page in Russian (and not Ukrainian or Finnish as those are also available) Wikipedia. I would expect that readers of these wikis would expect to see a promotion of a WikiGap event in their language, or at least see a clear mention that the event you are promoting covers Russian Wikipedia only — NickK (talk) 18:17, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      Thank you for your question & a great idea, NickK! I would also very much welcome developing closer cooperation between WMRU & WMAZ, WMFI, WMKK & WMUA for cross-promotion of wiki-events in diversity of languages within territories falling under the responsibility of respective chapters! And we are interested to raise our population's active participation in & collaboration within the Wikimedia movement & welcome multilingualism!
      I am not aware of the international event banner for WikiGap, which, if initiated, should obviously route viewers to the International or language-specific landing page based on their location, wiki or settings.
      This particular campaign is Russia-specific (see settings). It is meant to inform Russia's residents about prize-offering contest they can take part in. The landing page clearly shows sponsor-identified conditions (writing into Russian-language Wikipedia), and any resident from Russia is by default qualified to take part in the contest.
      If our Ukrainian, Finnish or any other wiki-colleagues or third parties can and are willing to offer prizes to Russia's residents for writing into Wikipedia in any language, respective banner campaigns would be very welcome for showing within Russia. I would be personally willing to help with organizing such banner campaigns.
      FYI: We have an upcoming prize-offering contest open for any language WPs - so far only Russian-language landing page and no banner request, but they will be coming. Regards, --Frhdkazan (talk) 19:30, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      My point is that we should avoid confusion. For banners in wikis having their own contests it should be probably made clear that this banner is about Russian Wikipedia only, and not about their language. This is exactly because Wikipedia is multilingual and by default a user expects to see an event in their language — NickK (talk) 10:53, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
      I see this differently: Contest is targeted towards residents of Russia, for all of whom Russian is one of their languages (it's not alien to them, same as Ukrainian is to Tatars or Russians living in Ukraine) & Wikipedia in Russian is thus one of many Wikimedia projects serving them as well. Contest landing page clearly shows prize-awarding conditions set by the Swedish Embassy to the Russian Federation & gives information about other WikiGap-related events (including in Ukrainian). I would see hiding this information from Ukrainian-language Wikipedia readers from the Russian Federation as fair only if we could offer them a similarly prized contest.       I do not say we must hide this information. Currently it is not obvious from the banner that the contest is taking place in a different wiki, and it is written only in the 10th paragraph of the landing page. My point is that it should be clear, either from the banner or from the top of the landing page that this is a Russian Wikipedia event (not Ukrainian, not Tatar, not Bashkir etc.). Russia-related wiki-project banners in Ukraine edit

NickK, shall ukwiki hold this banner at all? Is there option to put it in our local discussion? Considering contemporary circumstances and Crimea annexation we'd better withhold this, unless local discussion permits it. Alex Khimich (talk) 01:28, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Frhdkazan: We will already cover Bashkortostan as a part of CEE Spring which starts in just two weeks. @Frhdkazan: Please, try to understand us as well: we have a war with your country. RU-associated banner display shall harass and abuse ukwiki readers, it can attract lots of disapprovment and vandalism as well. If you eager to link people from Ukraine in your contest, ruwiki ads shall cover it, all potential editors in your field of interest edit ruwiki also and mostly. At current idea   I oppose geopolitic here and placing any Russian-related banners in ukwiki untill we have your militaries in our country. @Alex Khimich: I only wish we could demonstrate that individual Wikimedians & our global brotherhood is stronger & more important than whatever ideology of respective political entities we live in. I do not see how reading and writing about other countries and their cultures might be considered harassment & abuse, but again - I might be blinded by the vision & mission of Wikimedia movement, and the ideals of human-to-human level collaboration in its projects. But I understand that in Ukraine today Russia & Russia-related topics might be be perceived as LGBT related topics are in predominantly Muslim or other traditional countries, or having many wives and subordinating individual freedoms to the interests of community in the West.--Frhdkazan (talk) 11:37, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
