Welcome to Meta! edit

Hello Psychoslave!, and Welcome to the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki! This website is for coordinating and discussing all Wikimedia projects. You may find it useful to read our policy page. If you are interested in doing translations, visit Meta:Babylon. You can also leave a note on Meta:Babel or Wikimedia Forum (please read the instructions at the top of the page before posting there). Happy editing! -- Mikhailov Kusserow (talk) 02:07, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Novels, etc. edit

If you're looking for a place to post miscellaneous content, there's always RationalWikiWikiWiki. It's pretty much anything goes over there; whatever people want to import, unless it's meaningless gibberish, we're willing to host. We can create Poem:, Novel:, etc. namespaces if you plan on posting that kind of content. We already have Essay: and Recipe: namespaces. Leucosticte (talk) 10:56, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for you suggestion. The project announce "rational discourses" as a guideline. I can't see how this would match with poetry, novels and so on. That could do the trick for essays, but wikikultur is intended with larger focus. --Psychoslave (talk) 11:10, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Note, I copied your intervention on the wikikultur discussion page. --Psychoslave (talk) 11:14, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
The scope of the wiki can simply be expanded to include poetry, novels, etc. in addition to rational discourses. Since we have virtually no other users, it doesn't really matter what we do, because there's no one around to object. I own the wiki so I make the rules. May I ask a few questions? There are some obscure words which made the whole translating work difficult. What's the meaning of "scene" in the tagline? It makes no sense in Chinese.--H2NCH2COOH (talk) 11:00, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Note : I answer you on the wikikultur proposal page, so the conversation is not lost. --Psychoslave (talk) 17:52, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Je le ferai!  Raoli  23:46, 30 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
Can I use "舞台(stage)" instead of "scene"? It's really difficult to translate "Culture Scene / Cultural Scene" into Chinese word for word.--H2NCH2COOH (talk) 02:09, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, I can't say for 舞台, but stage should do the trick. In my native language (french), you say scène. As far as I know there's no word which you could translate stage with all its meaning, but for the area, in any theatre, generally raised, upon which an audience watches plays or other public ceremonies, certainly you would use scène as a translation. So I would say, yes, go for it. --Psychoslave (talk) 17:02, 1 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I forgot: Great idea edit

Trash disposal

I think it was a great idea of you to install the Wiktionary future page. I still see the danger of getting something like a trash disposal. But aren’t similar pages the very same? And don’t these trash disposals sometimes contain valuable content that only needs to be mined?

The most difficult things at the beginning will be:

  • To be able to evaluate what the real benefit of a proposal is in WT Project dimension (already mentioned).
  • How to structure the proposals (already mentioned)?
  • Do we succeed to explain basics, what we are discussing about, what the proposition is good for, even in terms understandable by users, not in depth experienced in all the buzzword bingo language or project details?

NoX (talk) 16:38, 7 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you. I'll see what I can do to avoid such a path to trash disposal, if you have some concrete suggestions, I'll be happy and grateful to hear them. --Psychoslave (talk) 09:15, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
You recently added on title level 2 (===) "Thinking out of the classical online Wiktionary format and reading usage". In my opinion this is a structuring title for proposals. Your proposals start on title level 3 (====). I think we should lift all your titles by one level.
At the beginning we should add a structuring title like preliminaries or so. There we should add things common to all proposals. E.g. a model for proposals.
Proposal title level 2 (===)
Title Abstract level 3 (====) Very short meaning of the proposal.
Title Current Situation level 3 (====) Describing the shortcomings of the current situation.
Title Recommended improvement level 3 (====) Describing them, perhaps using subtitles on level 4 (=====).
Title Comments on proposal level 3 (====). Initially empty, filled by others.
We should ask Denny to remove his questions (I’ll add a link to this on his talk page).
The title “Targets, business-model of the proposals presented here?” should be left at the preliminaries but it needs improvement in the sense of imagined business model for proposals (I couldn’t find a real one). I think to do that.
Which other structuring titles should be proposed (this is merely a brain storming)?
  • Proposals concerning the user surface (everything the user sees or hears (on his screen, tablet, or phone)).
  • Proposals concerning the data storage (how data should be better stored)
  • Proposals concerning the data content (mark-up, mark-up models, language paragraph sequences etc.)
  • Proposals concerning linguistic details or specialties (things only language specialists can contriubute)
Perhaps we should put this on the discussion page and restructure the current content afterwards. NoX (talk) 20:02, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, your ideas are great, I totally agree that we should move all this to the discussion page so it has a better visibility, and I'm ok with your restructuring propose. I probably won't have time for it tomorrow, and now it's time to sleep for me. But fell free to begin/do it. :) -Psychoslave (talk) 22:06, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for contributing my proposal for Proposal-Structure (I assume it was you (145.226.30.44 (talk)‎, having forgotten to log in. If so, you can simply undo and redo it on the history page after being logged in). I'm currently a little bit short in time. I'm sure the others will go with us and accept restructuring and the strong need for structure. One thing I didn't understand (and this seems to me difficult to pass to you, because image transfer in WT is a little bit cumbersome): Why did you remove the non-Latin (Russian, Chinese) signs? Don't you see them in your screen-presentation? To me, showing them was merely a gag. For another user it is part of its WIKI-Name-content and by adding question marks you made its name becoming red, unknown. NoX (talk) 10:50, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes it was me, if I undo and redo it, I suppose it will keep track of it in the history anyway and just cluter it. It's possible I inadvertently removed some strings, as I made copy/paste in vim to easily reindent sections with regexp. And it looks like my currente desktop have problem to paste unicode within vim, so if data was erased, that's probably the reason. It should of course be restored and I apologise for my mistake. --Psychoslave (talk) 12:45, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the support on the project (global economic map) edit

Would you be interested to help re-create other country articles. Copy-paste onto your sandbox is the easiest way.

I began working on the China article in case you were interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Mcnabber091/sandbox Mcnabber091 (talk) 03:28, 13 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I guess you are talking about Global Economic Map. Of course an article on China is very interesting most human live there after all. It may even be interesting to have more than one more page for so large regions. I would be happy to help, but what are you expecting exactly ? If its just translation, I guess I can help. If you ask me to create equivalent page for other region, you will have to provide me more information on how I could do such a work properly, I have no information in Economics and don't even have a clue where I could gather relevant information. --Psychoslave (talk) 12:54, 13 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am looking for volunteers to help add new articles and data to the list of countries. At this point the entire project will be in English. You don't have to be an economist to find the data. Google is the best place to look. Also check out government webpages. The references on 'Economy of the U.S.' are good examples on where to look. If you have any questions post it on my talk wall.Mcnabber091 (talk) 08:03, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll see if I find time to do that. --Psychoslave (talk) 08:57, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

its

material, saying how many views it generated is the best convincing argument imho. But I searched for a lots of different valuations, with each their own limits. As an example : - advertisement value : more or less the market value if a private

company

would like to make an offer to the foundation, best evaluation is with a simple ratio of pageviews * average page view value. $8 per 1000 pageviews => $1 600 000 000 per year for all wikipedia with discounted cash flow method (with the internet growth prediction),

I

get a $8 800 000 000 value. (2% of Apple Market Capitalisation) limitation : the value of wikipedia relays in its contributors and if

it

was sold, no more contributors would keep writing (and a fork would be

done)

limitation : the pageview value given by the foundation includes

bots...

- "how much would it cost to write Wikipedia" ? I used the indicator of freelance journalist paid at the "word" and I multiplied by the monthly size increase of Wikipedia. limitation : of course the choice of journalist is discutable, it's

not

the same job, but it is close enough to be compared. I used 57,74€ for 1500 signs (a value found in france), which gave me

€32

000 000 per month value for french wikipedia, so with a €3000 monthly

cost,

it gives 900 employees for french wikipedia. - I also calculated with a "time spent" indicator, calculated with wikiscan.org (15 minutes max per contribution), which gaves me a more

Programmation Wikidata-dictionary edit

Salut !

--Psychoslave (talk) 13:44, 27 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Your Wishlist proposal edit

I've moved your proposal to 2017 Community Wishlist Survey/Miscellaneous/Making Mediawiki MOOC-ready. Please do not create or modify the categories, as this is not as simple as creating the page. There are many other steps involved, and we need to discuss it as a team first. I realize you were just trying to help, so thank you for that! If we end up re-creating the Wikiversity category, I'll let you know :) Thank you for participating in the survey! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 16:31, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ok @MusikAnimal (WMF):, that's fine. I wasn't aware of this additional steps so I just went in the be bold attitude. All the more it wasn't moved to oblivion, so there is really nothing to be disappointed about. If that can have any interest for the decision process, I plan to add at least one more Wikiversity proposal in the wishlist. I'll add it in the miscellaneous category in the mid time. --Psychoslave (talk) 22:41, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Psychoslave, I have another note about the survey. :) I've seen in a couple places that you've used the   Support template to indicate support for the idea. It's great that you're endorsing and encouraging people. We'd like to keep the support templates off the page during the proposal phase, because last year we saw that sometimes it made people think this was the voting phase. I've taken the template out of your comments, but left the rest. Let me know if that's unclear. Thanks! -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 9 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
No problem, it's perfectly clear. --Psychoslave (talk) 19:46, 9 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposal limit edit

Man we just won't leave you alone, will we! =P So yeah, I regret to inform you there's a limit of three proposals per user :( You can read more about this in the rules. Sorry for the inconvenience! You can just let us know which ones you want to keep here, and we will archive the others for you. Thanks for your understanding. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

You can archive my Wiktionary proposal, which fortunately is more or less a duplicated with the request of an other user. Also Making Mediawiki MOOC-ready seems to be an already achieved task, I just wasn't aware of it. I think that with this two archived, I fall back to three proposals, don't I? --Psychoslave (talk) 20:01, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
That will do it! Thanks again MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh great the proposal about beta.wikiversity has just been archived, so I have one more slot again. I will have to look at the MOOC extension to see if it indeed provide everything I would expect, especially regarding user progress data persistence in quiz. In the mid time, might the proposal be unarchived @MusikAnimal (WMF):? --Psychoslave (talk) 22:57, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Done! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 23:16, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tech ambassadors, "take two" edit

Hello tech ambassador! This month has seen a good influx of new faces in this crew \o/ , so it is time to reactivate our conversations. Now that we have a pretty good coverage of so many different projects, here are some topics for your consideration.

  1. Are there further thoughts on the role itself? I hope the questions available on Meta can help spark them. Please weigh in at Talk:Tech/Ambassadors/List#Tech ambassadors, take 2.
  2. How about we try and organise future collective work in a Phabricator workboard? Talk:Tech/Ambassadors/List#A Phab workboard for us? has all the details to explore this proposal.
  3. Finally, you are also welcome to comment at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T177923, should you happen to have suggestions for the Community Liaisons team, currently wondering how to measure "Wiki projects requesting beta features and other early deployments".

We hope to be able to host a live discussion in early 2018; until then, we're looking forward to hearing from you on Meta! All the best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk), on behalf of the Community Liaisons

Getting started on Phabricator edit

Greetings, ambassador!

As recently discussed within this group, we are ready to experiment with setting up a project and its related workboard on Phabricator, the platform used in the Wikimedia movement for project management, software bug reporting and feature requests. It will help us coordinate and cooperate better on projects that should require ambassadors' involvement.

For the time being, I'm just asking that you please add your Phabricator nickname next to your name in the ambassadors' table (you can create an account now if you don't have one already). I will send you further information soon! Thanks for your patience as we get to the operational stage of this effort :) Best, --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 14:50, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Elitre (WMF):, I use the same nickname in Phabricator, I'm unsure if any edit is required from my part. --Psychoslave (talk) 16:26, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I think the others are linking to their profile there, that doesn't hurt :) Thanks! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 16:35, 16 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Bonjour.

--Psychoslave (talk) 14:30, 27 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

New Tech Ambassadors Phabricator board edit

Hello!

You have listed yourself as an active Tech Ambassador, thank you for that!

We have recently set up a board on Phabricator so that you can learn about tasks and updates that are potentially interesting for your community, and take action when necessary. During the pilot phase we are currently in, to avoid confusion, only Wikimedia Foundation's Community Liaisons will mark tasks so that they end up in the various columns. Thanks for your understanding!

Please follow this Phabricator board (learn how to). You'll receive "notifications" for updates in all tasks listed there. In case you choose to receive them as email; we currently expect the volume to be fairly low, but in any case you can learn how to manage it.

If you have any feedback about this board, please leave your questions and comments on the Ambassadors talk page.

All the best, Trizek (WMF) (talk) 13:03, 24 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Telegram and Mastodon edit

Wikimedia groups on Telegram most of all need some connection to IRC, so that they avoid becoming a walled garden. There are several channels which already do this in the free software sphere, like Fedora (they use teleirc, I think).

As for Mastodon, I prefer to use an existing instance from some friendly non-profit: the best I found some time ago was quitter.se for GNU social and https://mastodon.partipirate.org/@wikimediaitalia . A better use of our own developer time would be to make tools such as navierstokes reliably work, so that we can mirror all our social channels on Mastodon/GNU social and build some critical mass from there. --Nemo 06:18, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Nemo: for your valuable feedback. I will look at what I can do regarding the set of IRC bridges, as well as your other suggestion. For now I subscribed an account on framapiaf. I don't think IRC provides the feature conveniences that attracts users to platform like Telegram. If you are aware of modern IRC clients that achieve the same level of cross-device UX only using IRC protocol, I would be of course very interested. But I suspect that the protocol itself is not well adapted for this kind of feature set, although I confess this is more a guess as an accustomed end user, not an informed opinion by someone proficient in the protocol specifications. It's the first time navierstokes come into my radar, I'll check that too, thank you. --Psychoslave (talk) 07:02, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
IRC is a bridge to serve all sides. You don't need to have everyone use IRC directly but there are several ways for those who want to use it like Telegram (at some point I found Riot.im was the easiest). At any rate, opening the walled garden is the first step for success with any of those individual solutions. --Nemo 08:29, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

SVG Translate Community wishlist survey project edit

Hello! Thank you for voting for the SVG Translate project that was proposed in the 2017 Wishlist survey. The Community Tech team in the Wikimedia Foundation is beginning to start their work on the project. We're currently looking for feedback on some open questions which will allow us to come up with preliminary designs for the tool. If you are interested in being involved, you can watch the project page and join in the discussions on the talk page. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from your experiences. You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:24, 30 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

participation for tremendous wiktionary user group in wikimedia summit 2019 edit

Hi,

For the wikimedia summit 2019 who is going to represent the Tremendous wiktionary user group? was there any consensus arrived at? only three days left for registration of the event. -- Balajijagadesh (talk) 17:34, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Balajijagadesh:. No one that I am aware of will go to the summit to represent TWUG. I personally didn't especially pushed for that as it didn't seem obvious that such a move would match the scope of the summit, but I might have mistaken here. Anyway, if you do have suggestions regarding Wikitionary strategic development, please let me know and I'll try my best to match that with some concrete actions.

Cheers, Psychoslave (talk) 06:52, 20 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hey {{ping|Balajijagadesh}, I see that you create Tremendous Wiktionary User Group/Wikimedia Summit 2019, so it seems fine. Thank you very much for these actions. --Psychoslave (talk)

"Who Wrote That" project update edit

Hello. I'm reaching out to you as you participated in the 2017 Community Wishlist proposal for "Who Wrote That" project (previously known as "Blame Tool"). The Community Tech team is kicking things off on the project and we have an early-stage mockup available for you to look at. I invite you to follow that project page, where I will be posting periodic status updates for the project. You are also welcome to provide your thoughts on the talk page. The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), you can also add others. If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 13:20, 18 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Demande de commentaires : Recommandations automatiques de sections d’articles edit

(Hello. Reaching out to you as you're among the "tech ambassadors" for this language. We'd really appreciate your help this week, and also you spreading the word to other experienced editors willing to lend a hand!)

Merci,

Jonathan Morgan & Diego Saez-Trumper, Wikimedia Foundation Research --08:22, 25 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

The TWUG on space.wmflabs.org edit

Hello Psychoslave

A few months ago, WMF opened a new discussion space. Since our user group has some difficulties to communicate (not everyone sees the messages that are posted on Talk:Wiktionary/Tremendous_Wiktionary_User_Group), I asked for a dedicated forum for the TWUG to be opened. It's happening here (there is no topic so far).

From now on, I invite you to follow the category to be informed as soon as a new topic is created. Pamputt (talk) 18:44, 16 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Community Wishlist Survey 2020 edit

Hello!

You are getting this message because you've previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey, in either the Wikisource or Wiktionary categories. I wanted to let you know that this year's survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until November 11. Unlike previous years, we are only accepting proposals for non-Wikipedia content projects with no dedicated teams (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). You can learn more on the survey page.

You can vote on proposals from November 20 to December 2. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won't send out a separate reminder to you about that. We look forward to your participation. Thank you! IFried (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

AI legislation edit

Dear Psychoslave,

I contact you since you are marked among the "People who are interested" in Advanced technology page. As you might already know, the EU is working about a regulation of the AI environment, in order to promote its potential and at the same time to protect the citizens from unwanted uses. It is going to be an important moment for achieving the most empowering, safe and clear definition of the rights and duties related to the AI, affecting also Wikimedia's opportunities, not only inside EU. I kindly invite you to participate to the discussion, firstly by commenting the page that is dedicated to it, in order to draft Wikimedia's answers to this legislative initiative of the EU.

The linked page contains the questions from the public consultation by the European Commission on its Artificial Intelligence White Paper.

The EU's survey will remain open until 14 June 2020, but we will take input into account until 31 May 2020.

Thanks, --sNappy(talk) 21:28, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Mattia Luigi Nappi:, thanks for this message. Unfortunately I only see it know. I was totally unaware of it, despite my growing interest in this topic. Actually I even participated in an on site debate on laws and AI in Europe a few months ago, mainly directed toward car automation and related liabilities. So thank you for the message, hopefully I won't miss your future ones. --Psychoslave (talk) 05:50, 1 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Armenian speaker edit

Hello, Psychoslave! You have recently requested help from Armenian speakers and included my name on it. I am sorry, but I don't speak Armenian. If there is a page or category or something telling that I do, it's incorrect. If you ever need a Portuguese speaker however, I will surely help. Cheers! —Teles «Talk ˱C L @ S˲» 14:50, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello, and thanks for you reply. I used the history of the Armenian user group Meta page to determine who might possibly be relevant to contact. Maybe you edited this page for some transversal topic not specifically related to Armenian. Sorry for the noise, if you have better strategies to suggest in such a case, I would be glad to hear about it. Thank you for you proposal to help with Portuguese work. I don't have a specific request requiring this language skill right now. But if you have time for it, I think translating A letter of thanks from Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation would worth your time. Wikitechstorm 2024 edit

ENGLISH

Hi we are planning to organize a Wikitechstorm in Switzerland (French part). We are looking for organizers and volunteers ! The page is an initial draft page that will be moved to mediawiki once I have enough edits to be allowed to do it (or someone else moves it). Please reply on our talk page here : Talk:Les sans pagEs#Wikitechstorm 2024
