Hello, Billinghurst! I thought I should ask you this before doing anything about it. This is a URL redirection from Google. As I have learned, all URL redirections should be blacklisted. Turns out this redirection is there for a while... so, maybe there must be a reason or maybe it just slipped our eyes. I see that there are some discussions about it on Spam Blacklist, but nothing really convincing (IMO) for not adding it.

I just reverted this on pt.wiki. I understand that this links to a search and is not really that bad, but I can't see why that would be useful, while there is a potential for spamming to any spam link or blog that may appear on Google search. It's actually kind of dumb to link to a search, as it sounds like the readers can't search for themselves. It can usually be used to point to searches of a topic that may only provide poor results to unespecific sources. We can't really know which source is being pointed to be verified and it actually can change with time.

While it seems that links to Google maps are disabled, I see that it is still largely used globally, which might be an issue if blocked without warning.

As I believe you have dealt with that issue before, I wonder if you have an opinion if we should or not add it to Spam BL. —Teles «Talk ˱C L @ S˲» 14:49, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

@Teles: This is a thorny issue, and you can see numerous conversations in the blacklist archives via the search [1]. Of course there are changes in how things are done locally at WMF so some of the earlier reasons may be null and void.I would think that in light of those conversations that this is not the space for a unilateral decision of an admin and we would only proceed with such an addition after a longer conversation with the broader community.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:11, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Please respond to request for reason for unsummarized reversion vote at a VfD

Please respond at q:en:Wikiquote talk:Votes for deletion/Home Timber and Hardware's Know How Show#Casting and removal of delete vote to your unsummarized reversion of your vote at a VFD which could have been for a number of reasons in my opinion and where a visible vote strike with explanation would have been best practice in my opinion and what I would have expected to have seen from a global sysop. I totally AGF you may have been busy and not caught my message on that page where I would prefer you responded. Thankyou. -- User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 08:25, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

I reverted my edit with a short interval between the two, there is no requirement for me to make any (further) comment. Please do not go making up rules.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:16, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
That response is simply not helpful. Were you trying to make a point, which you may have been, or did you make a misjudgement? We all make mistakes, me more than more that most. But an edit summary would have been expected as far as I am aware. At least one person on enWikiquote has (in my view very unjustified) concerns about global admins/stewards; and I'd like to believe totally there isn't a problem. If you have problems with my actions on enWikiquote ... given presumably the plural in the "rules", then please raise the matter there. If you don't I will need to self report there. Thankyou. -- 22:01, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Hmm. Please listen. I am a very experienced editor. I am entitled to edit within the rules of each community as I see fit, and I have not edited outside of the rules. You have asked me to review my edit now three occasions, and I answered sufficiently on the second occasion; I don't need to add anything further. That you would prefer me to edit differently, is fine, and it is fine for you to ask that of me … once; not now at three times, and not here at my meta user talk page. My global sysop status has very little to do with my making any comment at enWikiquote.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:40, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Thankyou for taking the trouble to reply and making you position perfectly clear. -- User:Djm-leighpark(a)talk 04:01, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Request for page protection

Hi Billinghurst, please make my meta user page fully protected. So that, only administrators can edit my user page. Thanks! Borhan (talk) 18:31, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Not done Borhan: please note that only trusted users are able to edit your local user page, so there should not be any requirement to further protect it. Due to the unique nature of meta user pages, all users have a level of protection automatically applied through our abuse filters.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:01, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, please keep an eye on this. Was tagged spammed by someone else and you reverted it and blanked. IMHO it can be deleted but I accept blanking too. They seemed to reinstate the content again, warned them and given them a new scope warning. Once more I will be considering a full protection / partial block. Recently I am pretty busy in RL so will appreciate you keeping an eye on it. Thanks. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 06:43, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Editing news 2023 #1

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:18, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey, I doubt that the conference call about mw:Edit check is in your timezone, but I'd love for the team to get your advice. One of the open questions is: When should the visual editor encourage people to add a citation? Feel free to leave a message on wiki for them if that works better for you. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:52, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Blanking vs deleting

Hi! Why do you think it’s better to blank Meta talk:Information and statistics than to delete it? It’s a new page with zero useful edit history, so nothing would be lost with the deletion; while the blue talk page tab on the content page suggests there is something useful there, so people take time to go there – just to find out it was in vain. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:55, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

The content doesn't particularly meet the criteria for deletion. It is a talk page that someone is going to recreate at some page, and at that point we would just remove such out of scope content rather than revdel it. So with that approach we may as well just blank it now, as there is no requirement to step into admin actions when not required.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:32, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
It very much meets Meta:CSD G7; I’d say even G1. Yes, someone may (not going to!) recreate the page at some point, but until then, the blue talk page tab on the content page suggests there is something useful there, so people take time to go there – just to find out it was in vain, to repeat myself. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:24, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
I’m patient, but I’d like to get an answer before this topic gets archived once again. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:43, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
So we disagree. I declined a speedy delete, if you disagree then please follow the policy for its removal. I am not really in favour of a rather valueless discussion.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:00, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Special:AbuseFilter/169

Hello Billinghurst,

This filter is trigerred on fr-wp by an user who (rightly) used the fifth word/regex on line 7 (it's inside the name of a Commons file). I don't think it is right that this global filter is triggered for an user with > 4000 edits (who is not yet autopatrolled). The filter works well, as user falls into line 2 condition and do not fall into line 3 conditions. Maybe could you add an editcount restrictive condition?

Best, — Jules* talk 11:34, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Inactivity check tools

Hello. This is in reply to your comment on Daimona's talk page. There are no checking tools per se. I've been generating the list of inactive administrators mostly manually with the aid of some SQL queries (e.g. quarry:query/72743) and User:Krd/inactive admins, then doublechecking my findings before notifying. It's a very cumbersome and manual process. I (and I think my fellow bureaucrats) have always considered AbuseFilter changes as administrator actions, since these are logged as such in Special:Log/abusefilter. We can have a discussion about it of course, but I'm not sure it'll go anywhere, considering that past attempts to change the inactivity policy have failed, and my current proposal to expand the signing period for more than 1 week is currently stagnated. Happy to discuss about it though. I hope that you're okay. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:17, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

@MarcoAurelio: You are not using the stewardry tool to give a result like this in your kitbag? It is in one of the stewardry templates as it displays on every page I visit from my global.js (this one [2]) I have had it running since I was a steward and it is invaluable. Apologies for appearing like I did on DE's page, I just needed to ensure that we were going to have abusefilter in focus, as we are forcing DE to be an admin when he is just interested in a subset for global AF bundled which we forcibly now bundle with metawiki admin tools which is a historical/hysterical blurred mess. All well, bumbling along in life, bumbling along onwiki, about do something new within WMF vol. space--another weird tick box in wmf-life.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:03, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello. Yes, stewardry is one of my tools as well, but given that Meta is 'weird' (some logs that exist here but not elsewhere) I also manually verify with other tools just in case. I agree AF is important, specially now that it's globally deployed. That's why I reminded DE of making at least 10 edits. If the number of applications for adminship solely for global AF management increases over the time, it may be wise to create an abusefilter manager local group with its own election/removal rules. In any case, IMHO our inactivity policy is total nonsense at this stage. You can make 1,000 admin actions but if you fail to make at least 10 edits, your rights are removed without warning... when you've made use of the tools; and on the other hand, it's sufficient to make 10 edits without any admin actions to retain the tools if you sign within one week. I know I sound like a broken phonograph record, apologies. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:15, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

Global filter 233

Hi Billinghurst, hope you're fine! I noticed you disabled global filter 233, but tbh this filter, even if it hits a lot of false positive or double edits (which btw are easy to distinguish), is imho the most useful filter to check registered spambots (and unfortunately many registered spambots are not reported by the other filters, which is the main reason why this filter is really great). Discovering this kind of spambots allows us to immediately stop sockfarms, locking all the spammers and globally block many abused proxies so, if there are no other technical problems, I'd be inclined to re-enable it. Please, let me know! Thanks :) Superpes15 (talk) 01:08, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

@Superpes15: please look to refine it, when I looked through it there was nothing original or useful for a whole string of those which obliterating many other filters of usefulness. The filter hasn't been amended in two years, and for that level of duplication and false positives is not reasonable. Please find a happy medium, not impose that burden on everyone who uses the AF. There is more than finding spambots and it needs to remembered that all the other wikis see the hits but cannot determine why the false positives are there. The blunderbuss approach is ugly.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:54, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Yep I fully understand this and actually the fact that it clogs up the logs is never a good thing, I was thinking if we could filter searches in AF log by excluding this filter, it would be great! I'd say to try to fix it by not keeping it deactivated, 3 days without its logs means that in the next hour there will be a lot of them (many spambots try to edit continuously), I understand that the system is antiquated but in the meantime, unfortunately, it's the best we can have. I've already found several spambots within minutes of reactivating it... Superpes15 (talk) 10:02, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
@Superpes15: There will always be spambots. You can go back and see all the work that I did in the stewards space in the mid 2010s in the introduction of global spam filters, IP addresses, blocks, use of login wiki, etc. and all my work post stewardry to at least acknowledge that I am not a newbie or ignorant in this space. It is always about finding the happy medium in how we block, and what we block, and how we don't impose, and that we minimise, negative consequences. You need to find a balance point. If the spambots are not editing, then you can back it off and refine it. Has there been an influx of detected spam in the days that this was off? I don't believe so, so what is the reality in what is actually being achieved. What is being stopped? What actual inconvenience are the users facing? Please find a balance.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:20, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
Yep, I know your work on this area, I never thought that you don't know the matter very well and I'm sorry if I made you think so. I know that there will always be spambots and we can only mitigate their presence! The problem with dormant spambots, which are unable to edit, is that even after months they try to edit again and maybe they succeed (and it has happened to me several times) - so are not actually dormant. Furthermore, many proxies abused by them are also used by other spamfarms or also LTAs later. Let's ignore the fact that some small projects have their latest changes clogged up with spamfarm registrations. These are some of the reasons that lead us not to leave them active and to lock and check. Personally I plan on fighting them also in the next months, as pointless as it may seem, it's imho actually a good cleanup "behind the scenes" for the projects, and just the fact of cleaning hundreds of sockfarms and OP makes me see why it's worth it. In this job the filter is really useful, so personally I'd keep it active while fixing it. I understand the question about balancing whether it's actually useful or not to do this, but like I said, imho the pros outweigh the cons. I'd like to point out that other users had also asked for explanations as to why the filter no longer worked (and this makes it me understand that other patrollers use it too) Superpes15 (talk) 10:42, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Global filter suggestion

Something which logs new users adding div elements to pages would be a useful addition for monitoring and detecting this chicanery that has been going on lately. Your thoughts? Deauthorized (talk) 08:45, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Seems like it was deleted. See here for the edit summaries which have most of the important bits. It revolves around adding extremely obnoxious HTML elements to pages. Deauthorized (talk) 08:47, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
Filters that are trying to target things like that are best undertaken at local wikis, rather than as global filters. Basically the risk of false positives is too high, and there is little global value in such filters, and better that local communities manage that in association with the stewards.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:51, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Hope you are fine. I'm from bhwiki & hiwiki. I wish to bring your attention to an LTA on our wikis by IPs. Edits like this are going on and we are helpless to prevent this behavior.

I tried to enable an Abuse filter on hiwiki (see here) which is very crude and I don't understand why it does not work properly sometimes. Can you plese suggest somthing regarding this?

I have also noticed today that such behaviour is not limited to hiwiki (where it started) but is of a global concern now (see here). Please help. --SM7--talk-- 04:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

@SM7: I edited the filter. Typically if you are concerned about editing, then always a good idea to have something in the filter that says editing only as there is no need to scan for moves, etc. The second thing is that your initial top two lines needed to be merged, as youo are wanting to say if part A or part B are not relevant, then skip, otherwise check. I couldn't see the filter in the history to check further. [Note that I have been away for a couple of weeks on a well=deserved break, so only gave it a quick glance]. Please alert me to any current issues, and I should be able to have a more time-sensitive look.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:28, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Help

Hi when I was editing I got this message."Adding swearing by IP" but IP is not working anything. MP1999📞 11:19, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

@Billinghurst Please take a look here also. MP1999📞 09:52, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
this change [3] is affecting non-autopatrolled users which were previously not affected if their editcount was high enough. Johannnes89 (talk) 11:02, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
@Johannnes89 Can you restore my rights in Hindi Wikipedia? MP1999📞 15:09, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
thank you so much MP1999📞 15:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
Done [4], although hi:Special:AbuseFilter/84 will likely revoke your autoconfirmed status again if hi:Special:AbuseFilter/history/84/diff/prev/456 is not (partially) undone. I cannot help with that due to lack of abusefilter-modify-restricted permission. You will need to ask local admins [5] (e.g. @SM7 who seems to be managing the filter).
Seems like Billinghurst intended to do just a minor fix to optimise run time / condition limit usage but mistakenly changed which users are affected by the filter. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:07, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Delete spam links

Hello, recently you helped me remove a spam link in this article. I checked on other projects and discovered that this link also appeared on enwiki but I couldn't remove it. Please help me delete it. That link is link number 8 of the page. Sincerely thank you! Do Tri ✓ 💬 12:09, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

I don't see anything required to be done at the enWP. No evident new spam.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:20, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
In the Release, source number 8 "Music Studio". Xewton. Retrieved June 22, 2011., you can check this source again. When accessing that source, it will lead to a gambling link like the link you deleted on this page in viwiki. Do Tri ✓ 💬 05:24, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

Topkapi Museum Istanbul

Hi, Billinghurst. I'm puzzled about the removal of a link to a museum website at la:Palatium Topkapı and (I think) at equivalent pages in other languages. Is this site really deceptive? It looks good; the "Museum Pass" that it sells seems to correspond to muze.gen.tr/document/bakanlik_yonergesi_en.pdf a government directive. If it is a cheat, where (if anywhere) is the proper site? I don't want to waste your time, but is there a mistake here? Andrew Dalby (talk) 15:52, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

I begin to see the problem. At least five sites claiming to be official -- probably none of them is -- this one happens to be the best at spamming. No need to respond after all -- have a nice day -- Andrew Dalby (talk) 16:10, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
@Andrew Dalby: In early 2020, an IP address has undertaken a bulk replacement of what we had had as the official websites in articles xwiki replacing it with those "muze.gen.tr" domain urls, and left the "official website" text intact. Some of that has since been replicated by our users as they have built articles based on other WP's articles. Big job to try to remediate, and imperfect it was by me. Where there was just a simple link with a claim of official site, I removed them, hoping that the communities would see and fix. Where it was in a required reference, and wasn't too onerous, I dug out the original link. I made a summary report at Talk:Spam blacklist as someone was asking for the domain's removal, and also noting HasanIST's commentary. Maybe chat with them about their original research and why they added to the blacklist.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:19, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Help

Hello, can i delete my meta talk page? It only contains edit by myself and Mediawiki Message Delivery. If it is possible, then delete my meta talk page. Thanks in advance. Borhan (talk) 08:15, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

@Borhan: We typically do not delete user talk pages, though you can request by the {{delete}} process, and an admin will determine whether they will or they won't. After that it is through a deletion request to the community.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:08, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Re

You can see [6], not any steward action on a month, you should understand LTA vandal is quickly to your anti-vandalism, we should locked cross-wiki abuse and LTA sock as soon as possible, please careful some LTA would auto create account when account have been block indefinitely in other wiki and continue their cross-wiki abuse.--MCC214#ex umbra in solem 04:11, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@MCC214: You do not need to tell me about the steward's role, I was one, and I speak with that experience. The role is a community role, and requires that visibility and accountability. So please put your requests to the appropriate forums and not on stewards' or admins' user talk pages. There will always be vandals, and there will always be LTAs, they will get managed. Don't feed the trolls.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I put this LTA sock in SRG, if after seven days not any steward manage, I will direct request in Amanda's talk page.--MCC214#ex umbra in solem 08:19, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@MCC214: SRG is the page to use for requests to block. Not Amanda's page. If the stewards are not responsive to legitimate requests then please escalate it that to Stewards' noticeboard and discuss their lack of responsiveness, not to a person's talk page. We need a global system that works, and to hold accountability to those who have the roles. Your approach loses both the accountability and visibility.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:27, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
